In 1787, Mozart wrote 272 short pieces (measures) of music and a table of rules to compose a waltz by throwing two dice. Every time one rolls the dice, the measures get combined in a new way to produce a unique one-minute waltz.
The rules for the composition are as follows: Two six-sided dice are thrown and the resulting sum determines each of the measures. The letters A-H in the horizontal axis determine the measure (from first to 8th).

The numbers 2-12 in the vertical axis represent the sum one can get with two dice. So if one rolls a 10, the first measure is the one corresponding to 98. In the second round one rolls a 5, so the second measure is number 17.

It is guaranteed to be unique: there are approx. 295,147,905,200,000,000,000 possible combinations and to listen to all of them you’ll need about 561,544,720,700,000 years.

4‘33” was John Cage’s most famous and disruptive composition, and now it can be performed by you! Cage’s work, which teaches us that there’s no such thing as ‘silence’ (and that there’s joy to be found in paying close attention to the sounds around), is available in this official release from the John Cage Trust and Cage’s long-time publisher, C.F. Peters.

Nothing beats real human connection.
We believe it’s okay to need motivation to take risks. That facing fears can be fun, and that one change can inspire another — and other people.
So we built a game to help you get out of your comfort zone — to make it fun and easy to see what happens when you do things differently. The more you play, the more you grow — and the more the unexpected starts to happen. http://www.serenflipity.com https://www.amazon.com/Serenflipity-30-Everyday-Adventure-Cards/dp/1452161666

Serenflipity is rooted in behavioral science — and in real experience.
Our founder, Cara Thomas, built this deck to help her get unstuck after a breakup and re-inspired at work. The rules are simple: just pick a card and complete the adventure. Take as long as you need, and when you’re done, pick a new card and start all over.

Inspired by the composer John Cage, Brecht developed event scores as well as other works using randomizations and ambient noises. For »Water-Yam«, he extended these event scores to encompass painting, sculpture, theatre, the everyday and the extraordinary, humor, mathematics, logic, and irrationality. »All I do is bring things into evidence, but they’re already there,« explained Brecht. The simplicity and directness of the cards reflect the participatory and experimental philosophy of Fluxus.

My specialism is lateral thinking, resolving the complexity encountered in the world with reductive poetic logic. I intertwine commercial and cultural practice: responding to the paradox of daily life and the complexities of project assignments.
I seek focused solutions that feel inevitable. I get there by starting at the beginning, asking why, what if… then making sense of the things I find with radical acceptance and by embracing truth.

Automatism as a term is borrowed from physiology, where it describes bodily movements that are not consciously controlled like breathing or sleepwalking. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud used free association and automatic drawing or writing to explore the unconscious mind of his patients. Freud’s ideas strongly influenced French poet André Breton who launched the surrealist movement in 1924 with the publication of the Manifesto of Surrealism. In the manifesto, Breton defined surrealism as ‘Pure psychic automatism ... the dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason and outside all moral or aesthetic concerns’.

“Following a rambling conversation with his dear friend Robert Filliou, Daniel Spoerri one day mapped the objects lying at random on the table of his room, adding a rigorously scientific decription of each. These objects subsequently evoked associations, memories, anecdotes; not only from the original author, but from his friends as well: a beguiling creation was born.

Many of the principal participants of FLUXUS make an appearance. It is a novel of digressions in the manner of Tristram Shandy or Robbe-Grillet; it’s a game, a poem, an encyclopaedia, a cabinet of wonders: a celebration of friendship and creativity. The Topography personifies (and predates) the whole FLUXUS spirit and constitutes one of the strangest and most compelling insights into the artist’s life. From out of the banal detritus of the everyday a virtual autobiography emerges.”

Saint Phalle created Shooting Painting American Embassy during “Homage to David Tudor,” a performance program she staged, with the artists Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jean Tinguely, at the theater of the American Embassy in Paris on June 20, 1961. Over the course of the evening, each artist deployed strategies of indeterminacy—actions whose results are left open to chance— to make works onstage in front of an audience.

For her contribution, Saint Phalle hired a sharpshooter to fire a rifle at paint-filled balloons attached to a slab of wood covered in white plaster and paint with various objects encrusted in it; the bursting balloons created streams of brightly colored pigment that poured down over the work’s surface. A toy gun, a bucket seat, a hatchet, and an old shoe are among the items that were absorbed and reimagined as the stuff of painting.

“There has already been an incident in my sector: Alberto Carneiro’s newspaper mural, meant for the public to write whatever it felt like, was taken down by the direction of SNBA. The main reason: there were already too many insults to the head of State, which is considered a crime, there was also pornography, and other insults, one of them to the sculptor (...) and director of ESBAL Joaquim Correia, provoked threats, the police and the National Council for Education... The matter will be discussed: it will probably be decided that the mural gets renewed and the most serious insults be archived. One can NOT say that antiart, counterculture, neo-Dadaism, protest, or whatever you might call it, are over amongst us. A newspaper gets scrawled and privileges tremble.” Ernesto de Sousa, letter to Carlos Gentil-Homem, July 26th, 1972. https://www.ernestodesousa.com/projects/do-vazio-a-pro-vocacao
