Letter from the Editor - Home ownership On 23rd September Swiss citizens will vote on a number of issues one of them being whether there should be tax breaks for elderly home owners or not. It is the second time in eight years that voters will have their say on the issue and the third ballot this year on financial incentives for home owners. At present the law identifies home owners who have paid off their mortgages and ensures that they no longer claim any tax deductions on debts associated to their property. However, opponents to the campaigners have criticised that the proposal would offer unfair benefits for a privileged group of elderly tax payers. The campaigners, who seek a revise in the present law, argue that the law presently punishes home owners who have paid off their mortgages, whether young or old. Supporters of the initiative, led by
Follow
the Home Owner’s Association, at the moment are clearly ahead with 55 per cent of the expected vote, but experts warn that this advantage will dwindle in the coming weeks. Whilst the result of this vote will impact a number of people the topic of property ownership in Switzerland continues as the legislative landscape flexes. With the second home initiative moving towards defined legislation some key points have become clear. Buildings that have been constructed and used in line with legislation in effect before 11 March 2012 will be able to continue to be used in the same way that was legally admissible on the date when the new constitutional law was accepted. Next point is that existing homes will be able to be freely sold and handed on through inheritance. Finally the definition of a second home is one
that is not the legal domicile of the people living there. It will be interesting to see just how much change will occur in the Saanenland from all of this legislative alteration. There seems to be plenty of property for sale today, when comparing real estate agency websites and advertisements placed in the media, in comparison with that of five years ago. Possibly the new rules will take us back to the days such as when asked by a visitor if there was a property for sale in the Saanenland, the question was met with a firm but confident no. Only time will tell.

tion of classic and modern housed cars within a great infrastructure. This is unique. I have not seen a business similar to ours, out there in the world.
You now have two separate business’s one which houses Audi and another Mercedes- Benz, Porsche, Bentley and Bugatti. How is this managed? Yes because of the fact that Audi and Mercedes-Benz are offering the same kind of cars we decided to separate the businesses. So Steffen Nischan, Nathalie Marmet, Marc Hirschi and Florian Dosot are running the Audi service department. At the same time my son Jan starts being involved in the business part time. He is 21 years old and continues his studies in Bern also. So the new company APAG Automobile is also the start for a new generation of young people.
Tell me a little more about your classic car business? The classic car business was our founding activity and we now have a long established knowledge on classic cars. Our primary knowledge is on German and Italian cars, but now we have English products added to this. We have learned and are still learning about English products. We don’t often work with American products. Our team in the classic centre comprises of five mechan-
What are some of your highlights, special moments in your business? It has always been a special moment when we introduce a new brand to our trading region. Also most memorable are our annual parties on 29th December and our classic days that we enjoy immensely. Last but not least it is a pleasure and highlight for me each special customer relationship. Some which we have had for so many years.
The new Audi dealership in Saanenland - APAG. Tell me a little about the history of your business? My brother Othmar and I each started with independent businesses in 1985/1986. I come from the commercial side. I did an apprenticeship at a notary in Gstaad and opened my own “fiduciary” company in 1985. A couple of months later my brother started the company ‘Carrosserie Pichler’. Othmar’s profession is that of a ‘carrossier’, a panel beater. I still recall his first bill was for the repair of a small bike; the bill was about SFr 35. Our mother worked as a waitress for more than 35 years in the restaurant Rössli in Feutersoey. She knew Albert Obrist who had a fantastic classic car collection, one of the best in the entire world. Serendipitous at the time, Albert Obrist needed someone to look after the cars and also someone who was capable of accountancy. That’s how everything started in our business. Until 1996 we concentrated only on classic and sport cars. After this time we started adding some interesting brands. In 1996: Chrysler-Jeep, in 2000: Mercedes-Benz, in 2005:
Porsche, 2007: Bentley, and in 2009: Bugatti. Finally in May 2012: Audi, which is represented by APAG Automobile AG, a new company. You clearly have a passion for cars, when did this start in your life? My passion for cars started when I was a young boy. My father was a mechanic and as we lived above the garage, all of our young life we were surrounded and involved with cars. Pichler has become very wellknown in and outside of the region, what do you put this down to? I think the reason why we became so well-known, is the unique combina-

Adar Tavor reduces his work as a dentist and has handed over the dentist’s surgery Dental Care Center in Gstaad to Dr. med., med. dent. Maurice B. Grosjean. All staff will remain and Dr. Tavor will still practise. He has gained his basic and advanced training at the University Hospitals of Zurich and Basel and the Kantonsspital St. Gallen. Hospital in Saanen to close in November 2012 On November 01 2012, the hospital in Saanen will close its doors. From then on, the hospital in Zweisimmen will operate as an emergency center to guarantee health care in the SimmentalSaanenland region. The Zweisimmen hospital will upgrade to a new computer tomography scanner, as scans are currently carried out only in Saanen. This investment creates the best possible conditions for the health care in the region and is a commitment from the Spital STS AG to Zweisimmen. According to CEO Bruno Guggisberg, the cost for the new scanner will be SFr 330’000.00. STS AG’s goal is to
position Zweisimmen hospital in a way that will improve the business results and minimize deficit, so that the emergency center for the region can be financed and maintained. The range of medical services in the region of Simmental-Saanenland will not decrease with the closing of Saanen hospital. Internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, gynecology and obstetrics, 24hemergency, dialysis and medical cross-functions such as anesthetics, laboratory, operating room and radiology will be available in Zweisimmen. In case of severe cases such as
strokes, heart attacks and accidents in the region, a patient would be stabilized locally, states the press release from STS AG. “Primary health care in the region is still conducted via a GP,” says Bruno Guggisberg. For further examination, therapies and operations, transport to Thun or Bern will be conducted for local citizens and visitors. This merge of hospitals will have an impact on 65 employees, of which 50 employees could find a position in Thun, Zweisimmen or at Alterswohnen AG, the institute for elderly residents. A solution is still being sought for the other 15 employees.
It has still not been decided if the hospital in Zweisimmen will operate after 2014 - even if it is undisputed that the region needs a permanent health care facility. It is a question of money and whether the canton is willing to offer financial support. This will be examined by the Spital STS AG, together with the Health and Welfare Administration, and is part of the project “Basic Healthcare Obersimmental-Saanenland.” By the end of August results regarding building up the emergency service, are expected.

Simon Oehrli opens wheelwright shop in Lauenen - experienced wheelwright has built a new workshop in Lauenen. His clients are not only from all over Switzerland, he is also known abroad, spreading Lauenen’s name throughout the world. Initially, Simon Oehrli wanted to be a carpenter. But his father convinced him to look for a more rare job. So he became a wheelwright, which turned out to be a good decision. He is now known outside the Swiss border for his work, particularly for restoring the wooden bodies of vintage cars and crafting water wheels. Recently, he also manufactured a wagon of a guild in Zurich for the traditional Sechseläuten. At 25 years old, after his graduation as a master carpenter, he bought the wheelwright’s shop
Lüscher in Gontenschwil in the canton of Aargau; 6 years later, he finished building his workshop in Lauenen. To own a wheelwright shop in his hometown was his childhood dream. “I always wanted to be independent and work and live in my hometown,” says Oehrli. Hans Lüscher, former owner of the wheelwright shop, had already made him an offer in the 3rd year of Oehrli’s training. “In the canton of Aargau, I never saw the sun,” he says and smiles. “In Lauenen, there is a better quality of life.” The first plans for the workshop were drafted three and a half years ago. The community of Lauenen supported it from the beginning and made everything happen so the young man could begin his project. “I also received a lot of support from my parents. Without them, it would not have been possible,” says Oehrli. Four months ago, he and his wife and business partner Petra Gämperli could finally move into the workshop, which contains a 5-Axis CNC machine. It is Gämperli who is in charge of it. “We can now reach every point of the room from every angle,” she says. The software for it costs SFr 70’000. Oehrli and Gämperli have tested it and become experts with it. “She is an accountant and has a flair for software,” says Oehrli.
Petra Gämperli is in charge of the 5-Axis CNC machine.
Oehrli always works under high pressure. It seems that he is everywhere at the same time. The mass of incoming orders is high, but he also invests a lot of time in the new building, where he plays the role of construction manager.

The man who curves wood: Simon Oehrli
Simon Oehrli and Petra Gämperli in their new workshop. “It is good that I didn’t know what this project would involve before I started, as I think I wouldn’t have done it,” says Oehrli. “I underestimated the workload. But it was a good experience where I learned a lot.” The business also includes a locksmith shop to process metal, as a lot of pieces include steel parts. Oehrli knows that his success is coming from looking for niches as a wheelwright. “The profession is not the same anymore as it was 50 years ago, you have to adapt it to the situation and have ideas.” And ideas are something the couple has for sure. In the past five years, they have invested a lot of money and time in the development of wooden saddle trees for horse saddles. This should become another important activity for their business, as many saddlers are looking for quality products made of wood. Up to now, saddle trees were always handcrafted. This is something Oehrli
mentions in passing. The most fascinating part for Oehrli is that no two orders are alike. “Every project needs different technical solutions and a lot of mental work.” At the moment, four people are working in the new workshop in Lauenen. For three months Oehrli has been passing on his expert knowledge to his first employee. They are fully booked with vintage car renovations until the middle of 2013. For Oehrli and Gämperli, the 700 square meter workshop is the base for a sustainable business. “I can sleep very well,” says Oehrli. For those who have met him, there is no doubt that he will reach his goals. On Friday, September 07 2012 and Saturday, September 08 2012 the wheelwright shop Oehrli in Lauenen will have an open day, where everyone is invited to visit. With three consecutive goals by Tete Storni (2) and Frankie Menéndez (1), they took a 9-8 lead. Star Design, far from giving up, made another effort and in the last seconds of play, Juani Gonzalez scored to level at 9-all and sent the match into OT.
As soon as OT started, Pablo Jauretche commanded the ball after the throw-in and took it to the goal posts, until he was stopped by Hublot’s defence. But Juani Gonzalez came again, and hit an impressive shot to secure Albrecht Bach´s team a 10-9 win and the title in Gstaad. Score: Team Star Design 3-2, 6-3, 8-6, 9-9, 10-9

Another penalty from the spot was awarded to Hublot, and converted successfully by Frankie Menendez, to cut the margin to one goal, a situation that was not to last as two consecutive goals by Manuel Cereceda gave Star Design a 6-3 advantage. A local family’s life on the high Alp during summer Saanen’s farming family Müllener spend each summer up on the Mittelberg Alp in Abländschen. Here is a ’look inside’ to see what it’s like for them.
and let them out on the meadow. Usually there is enough staff to help and Vreni is responsible for the kitchen, making a fire for the bathwater heater and feeding the calves.
On June 11 this year, the farmers moved up. Although the move up comes with a lot of careful planning, shopping and endless to-do lists, the build- up to the leave day is always exciting. A couple of days before, boxes of food, implements for cheese production, clothes and anything else needed for a summer, are made ready for transportation up to the Alp.
Although the summer on Mittelberg is not like a holiday, Vreni considers it to be like time on an island; the family hardly goes down for events, the mobile phone is only used for emergencies and the latest news is usually a few days old.
The family arrived on Tuesday 12 and were welcomed by a glacial wind whipping their faces, the first task became very clear - warm up the house. For those who know how difficult it is to make a fire in a cold chimney in bad weather, the result will be known. The smoke finds its way through every little hole. Vreni unpacked next. A week before, she went up with a friend and cleaned the place. Vreni has not completely settled on the Alp yet, she still has to go back down to organize her household in the village, clean up the fridge, do some last minute grocery shopping, and pay a few invoices. The day the cattle arrive on the Alp, she will be back, listening to the approaching bells, as they get closer. She welcomes the helpers with r_sti, made on the fire. Vreni next boils water for cleaning the cheese production tools, moves the now empty boxes to the attic and once a bit more comfortable, the daily tasks of a summer on the Alp begin. Muck out the stable, milk the cows
Vreni’s personal island moment is in the afternoon, when the men are out of the house. Then, she has time to read, write or make an overdue phone call. Family Muellener also hosts young people for traineeship. This year, 15-year old Willy from Ravensburg completed a 4-week farmer training course on the Mittelberg. He learned how to bring in the cows, put together a milking machine, learned how to feed the calves and how to be responsible for firewood needs. During the day, he accompanied Alfred in the forest or the meadow to do the weeding, install fences or clean up the fallen wood, caused by wind. For a change in the daily routine, Vreni’s granddaughters Noemie and Luana spent time on the Alp for a week. Even though they are only 6 and 8 years old, they are given little tasks in the house or in the stable. Taking care of the goats teaches the girls how to handle and treat animals. The open fireplace is the biggest attraction for them - they are impatient until Vreni allows them to make a fire for the oven. Willy mentioned that since the girls’ arrived, he had to chop wood more often.

On a Sunday in July, a sermon took place on Mittelberg, organized by the church of Abländschen. A part of the meadow was cut to pitch a tent. The sermon followed and a feast organized by members of the parish, as well as the Jodlerclub Bärgfriede, that attracted a lot of visitors.
in one morning.
Another young girl spent a few days with the farmer’s family. Ismaelie Reichenbach had a clear routine - she became responsible for the production of butter. The 50-year old butter machine is turned by hand and is rather tricky. If the cream is not turned consistently, the more you have to turn it. Ismaelie managed to produce six portions of good butter
On July 20, Willy’s four weeks were over and his family came to pick him up. He demonstrated proudly what he had learnt during his time on Mittelberg. With a warm hug and nice words, Willy says good-bye. Vreni and Alfred were not left alone for very long, as on August 01, their children came up to the Alp to celebrate Swiss National Day with a big fire, barbeque and fireworks. Meanwhile it is mid August and Vreni looks back on a summer full of joy and entertainment. Soon, she will have to prepare everything for going back down to the valley…

BY GSTAAD YACHT CLUB Measuring up to the success of the previous events the Gstaad Yacht Club (GYC) once more held its Classic Car Rally & Yachting on Saturday, 11th August 2012. In a joint venture and with organizational help from the Gstaad Automobile Club (GAC) the members of both clubs participated in the 6th edition of the annual Vintage car rally. Friday evening all participants gathered in Feutersoey for the registration and opening dinner at the GAC Clubhouse. To maintain the suspense until the last moment and challenge all copilots equally, the road book was given out Saturday morning 10 minutes before the start. Hansueli Brand, president of the GAC, quickly briefed everybody emphasising that reading the indications carefully would be better than speeding. Once all last minute preparations were finished the first car crossed the starting line in front of the Grand Hotel Bellevue at 8h30. Among the automobiles dating from 1982 back to the 20’s !!! were some wonders like a 1929 Bugatti T35C who came expressly from Bavaria, or a Mercedes 320

The fleet was completed by numerous Bentleys (Turbo R, S1 Fastback, and Continental), Porsches, two Jaguars (C-Type) and Ferraris (250GT and 275 GTB 4), Landrover, Aston Martin (DB 5), Alfa Romeo, Willys, a Triumph, Peugeot, Fiat 500 (from 1972) and a Morgan accompanied by a Jawa motorbike from 1954. Perfect weather conditions allowed open-top driving on the back roads of the Bernese Oberland from Gstaad to the first checkpoint at the Cailler Chocolate factory in Broc. ond challenge stop the participants continued their journey alongside the lake of Gruyere towards the Fribourg countryside. On incredible scenic roads the Canton Vaud was crossed lining up the small villages like Morlon, Les Coins, Fontanoux, Echarlens, Riaz, Romanens, Orsonnens or Chavannes before some of the cars got confused in the fields around Russy. Further back roads were discovered passing Domdidier and entering in the Cantone Fribourg via St. Aubin. Reaching Portalban at the lake of Neuchâtel participants assumed their final destination was very close, but were taken via Chabrey, Montmagy, Bellerive and Vallamond on the upper lake side to the Mont Vully and then via the old military road down to Sugiez. A last photo stop and everybody headed to the final destination, the historic town of Murten where the restaurant Les Bains offered a wonderful lunch, and its garden a perfect location for the sailing part of this year’s event. Wind conditions were excellent and allowed participants to complete two races in groups of four boats. After lunch and sailing, everybody
drove home individually. At the prize giving dinner a photo review showed first impressions from this memorable day. The final result combined the scores from driving, check points, questionnaire and sailing. Peter Erzberger, Commodore of the Gstaad Yacht Club handed the trophy to the winner, the oldest participating car of guests from the Bayerischer Yacht Club, Walter Rothlauf with his co-pilot Adrian Hoesch. The 2nd place went to GYC member Jean-Pierre Buri and his daughter Ambre who were followed by the second guest car from Bavaria with Hans Hibler and his son Philipp. On behalf of the GYC, many thanks to all that helped make this event a success once again. Thank you!

The GYC draws stock of the Olympics BY GSTAAD YACHT CLUB Last Sunday the Olympics ended with their final celebrations including the sailing competitions with 380 sailors from 60 nations. George Nicholson states: I was lucky enough to sail for the GB Olympic team in 1960. In those days we were all amateurs, had to pay our own way, and professional crew were barred from the actual racing. What a difference today. The TV coverage of the sailing was terrific, and it was possible to see just how fit, competent, and technical (and dare I say it “professional”) the crews had to be to get anywhere near the medals. I think the GYC sponsored boats gave it their best shot in a discipline which has now reached track and field levels of dedication. GYC Commodore Peter Erzberger quotes: We as a club have reached our goal; to bring the GYC Racing team to the Olympics 2012 with the fundamental support of individual members. The Swiss Sailing Federation and Swiss Olympic took those teams over consequently prepare them for the Olympics and compete in their classes against the other qualified teams from about 60 countries. With one Swiss sailing result in the top 10 the Sailing Federation and Swiss Olympic underachieved. We as a club as well would have loved to celebrate a medal and could understand that our athletes had the same in mind. But it’s clear that one has to aim high and measure himself always with the best. But in sports one thing is clear without underdogs there are no winners. We as a club are in best companionship, looking at big nations like the US, Canada or Germany or maritime nations like Portugal, Norway or Greece who as well did not win Olympic medals in the 2012 sailing
competitions. Today our athletes review the situation the following: Richard Stauffacher – RS:X: After the last qualification day I was in 10th overall position and qualified for the Medal Race. This last race of the top 10 was the highlight of the Olympic Games and a huge experience. I came in 7th but could not come further forward in the final ranking. Nevertheless I am very proud to have flown the Swiss flag in the race of the 10 best.
Flavio Marazzi – Star: It’s still very early to deeply analyse the 2012 Olympic Games and find the real reason why we were missing our goal in a spectacular way. One thing which is clear for us, is that we had the best support ever for our Olympic preparation. Thank you Gstaad Yacht Club. Nathalie Brugger – Laser Radial: 14 in general; yes, I am very disappointed as you may imagine. But the pleasure was there with me and
I have given everything I had. I did not let anything go. A big thanks goes to my coach, my team and to all of you who supported and believed in me until the end. My Olympic adventure was incredible because of you ... you are Golden. The GYC congratulates all involved and all supporters for the effort and commitment towards the sport, that this unique campaign could be realized. © Jürg Kaufmann

Club Life BY MANDOLYNA THEODORACOPULOS
Once upon a time, clubs were exclusively for gentlemen. They were created by and for the English upper classes. Women did not join. Tradesmen were not invited, and clubs were completely exclusive, such as White’s in London, established in 1693. The clubs were primarily political back then, having grown from 18th century coffee houses, though modern clubs have any number of reasons for being. Groucho Marx was neither English nor upper class, but he understood the concept best. In a telegram to the Friars Club of Beverly Hills he said famously, “Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member.” After all, he worked for a living.
Fortunately I have only once been in the position to make such requests. For most of my life I have been happily club-free. I never wanted to be a member of any particular club nor had I ever found a club that had many friends with whom I wanted to regularly associate in our own clubhouse. Physical lethargy prevented me from joining any athletic clubs, and perhaps the general lack of youth clubs precluded me from finding a club of my own. Certainly the number of terrific bores who frequent many of the world’s “exclusive” clubs was a disincentive. How times change. I joined three clubs this year. I surprised myself to realize
that I actually want to spend time in places where I know a lot of people. Why be a stranger in a strange land? It’s as boring as going to a party where you don’t know anybody. But stranger things have happened. Someone recently told me about a rich man who came to town and invited people he didn’t know to his birthday party. Apparently he was surprised when people declined. That’s the thing about clubs: Proximity doesn’t necessarily ensure association, much like befriending members of the English upper class. After a lifetime frequenting the Eagle Club here in Gstaad as if it was my own, I am finally a legitimate member. I had to do some light lobbying for support, but in spirit I have always felt like a member, having enjoyed the Eagle since I was small. Both my parents are members, my father being the club’s longest-standing life member and certainly one of the most vocal. You can count on him to reprimand you for sneaking a quick phone call on the terrace or castigating non-skiers who enjoy use of the best tables. He’s right, but when you have a club as inclusive as the Eagle, you can’t expect everyone to follow the rules. But they should. Club rules are there for good reasons and members must know what they are and keep their guests informed. Don’t be surprised if someone throws your telephone into the snow next time you take a call at
the top of the Wasserngrat! The second club I joined this year is the Andes. The founder members invited me to join, and thus I was spared the embarrassing appeals. For those of you who don’t follow these sorts of things, there is an inter-club ski week every year in St. Moritz. The Corviglia Club hosts the event, which includes such clubs as the Brook from New York and Madrid’s Puerta de Hierro. The Andes has no clubhouse and was only invented recently to include friends of the Corviglia who are not members of any participating clubs. The Eagle Club has been banned for conduct unbecoming, though I intend to remedy this in due course. Most recently I joined 5 Hertford Street, Robin Birley’s new jewel in London, the mother of clubland. When Richard Caring bought the Birley empire, none of those clubs appealed to me. The gentlemen’s clubs were off-limits, and places such as the Groucho and Soho House never interested me, as I don’t know any of the members. When Hertford Street opened I was thrilled to be invited and even more so to finally have a place to go where I know people, or at least recognize them. This is what I love about walking into Hertford Street and the Eagle—all the familiar faces. Did you think I’d join a club to network or make new friends? Bah!

Are you a clubman? Have you ever been a member or do you intend to apply for membership to a club? Whether or not you are interested in joining a members club, they are an intriguing subject for amateur and professional sociologists. Clubs illustrate a specific place and period’s character. They offer an amusing peek at human posturing. It’s much like a zoo, only for bipeds.
Nowadays there is a club for everybody. There are business clubs, clubs for women, clubs for Gentiles, clubs for Jewish people, clubs for golfers, clubs for skiers, clubs for tennis, beach clubs, nightclubs, and even yachting clubs in landlocked places such as Gstaad. Evidently, people really like clubs, and the socially insecure go out of their way to seek acceptance. They are usually soporific types if you ask me, which you haven’t, but I’ll bet on it anyway. We all know that special breed. They harass you for a signature and demand rather than request consideration. They are no Groucho Marx, and they would probably fit in better at a “gentlemen’s club” of the Playboy variety.
