F R O M PASTOR BRAD Friends, A few years ago upon turning forty-five in Texarkana (currently, I’m forty-eight), I had to get bifocals. I was less than happy about it. My optometrist was none other than Lit Fowler. Who is that, you ask? Lit is a descendent of Rev. Littleton Fowler, who is credited with being the first Methodist preacher to spread Methodism in Texas before Texas was even a Republic and is buried under the pulpit at McMahan’s Chapel, the oldest Methodist Church in Texas. Seeing my discontent with the bifocals, Lit, in a tone that I can only imagine sounded like his famous ancestor’s, gave me a strong dose of perspective. “The secret to learning how to live with bifocals is to focus on what they do and not what they don’t.” Dr. Fowler’s wisdom has been very helpful to me as we’ve begun our life together at MDUMC during this pandemic. Many persons have expressed their sadness at what has been unable to occur during our welcome, but I remain focused on what has occurred. Our family has been blessed abundantly by your warmth and kindness. This fall will not go as planned for many of us, but let’s focus on what we have and can do. Those old Methodists knew our general rules and the first is “do no harm.” We will continue to do no harm as we continue to take the right and appropriate precautions to keep everyone safe. The second general rule, “do all of the good we can,” is also something that we will strive to live into. Doing all of the good we can, we will continue our feeding and outreach ministries that serve the most vulnerable in our communities. The final general rule is “attend upon all of the ordinances of God.” Your amazing staff has been doing a great job in the difficult times trying to make sure that each of us is empowered in our challenge of loving God and neighbors in these unprecedented times as we learn, live, give, and serve amidst a pandemic. I am thrilled and excited to join the ministry at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. I look forward to collaborating with this great staff. And I look forward to collaborating with you in ministry and living into our Methodist heritage as we focus on what we can do in this season.
Grace and peace,
DR. BRAD MORGAN SENIOR PASTOR

A NOTE FROM YOUR YOUTH MINSITRY STAFF For all of us, this summer has been filled with great ideas, best-made plans, and unfortunate disappointments. It hasn’t been any different for our Youth Ministry here at MDUMC. After the heartbreaking decision to cancel Workcamp, we made room for plans B, C, and D. Although we were unable to share the traditional Workcamp experience, we were able to help support Kids’ Meals Houston and their enormous summer meal initiative by delivering over 1,000 juice boxes, food for 500 lunch packs and hundreds of hand-decorated paper lunch bags that included notes of encouragement. We also helped design and install beautiful art pieces at a local ministry called Agape Development. The work of our students will be featured as a focal point of their new space. Our amazing college Summer Staff delivered over 150 Workcamp swag bags to students who registered for Workcamp. Each bag contained a one-of-a-kind Workcamp t-shirt, PRAY bracelet, candy, leather key chain, sunglasses and a super cool custom Workcamp 2020 face mask. If you have not received your Workcamp swag bag please come by the Youth Ministry Office – it’s waiting for you! Of course, we could not have done it without the amazing students and parents to the parents who supported Workcamp in the midst of our pandemic summer.
7.8 BIBLE STUDY ZOOM WEDNESDAYS | 5 PM
We are currently studying the book of James. James has so many wonderful verses about how to live our faith by helping others. We know Zoom isn’t everyone’s favorite, but one fun thing is we can have students from Colorado, Florida, and Houston all together learning some Good News.
7.8 SUNDAY SCHOOL ZOOM SUNDAYS | 11 AM
Sunday School looks a little different these days, but we still love gathering with friends each week for a time of short devotional, music, or study. Contact LynellKennedy@mdumc.org for the Zoom meeting I.D.

WHAT IS YOUTH AL PH A? Many months ago, I sat at the Journey and listened to Pastor Colin as he told the congregation about Alpha, a group study that answered life’s biggest questions. I thought about how neat that would be, but lamented that I was perpetually busy with all our youth events and could never make the meetings. Cut to – quarantine. Grasping at straws to find ways to connect to students online, I looked into Youth Alpha. Similar to “adult Alpha,” as I call it, Youth Alpha incorporates impressive video components with introspective questions. With Zoom’s screen share feature, it was perfect for us. Starting with a few test subjects, I have gone through Youth Alpha twice now! Each meeting stirs great conversation with our students, encourages us in our faith, and helps to answer our doubts and questions. In our preparation for Workcamp, we created Alpha-like videos for our small groups to go through. We refuse to put these to waste, and I look forward to reaching out to more students to go through these videos together. We have been forced to be more creative than ever in our outreach to our youth, but who says that’s a bad thing? I’ve learned more about Zoom, video editing, Photoshop and FaceTime than I ever thought possible in such a short time. Through it all, I am reminded daily of the importance of checking in on our students’ mental health. This time of isolation has impacted all of us in ways we may not begin to understand. But by fostering real conversations that dive deeper into how we’re really doing, it opens an important dialogue. My favorite new game is called “We’re Not Really Strangers.” It’s a card game I found through Instagram that asks questions of each participant that we wouldn’t normally ask, and through that, we get to really know each other, and remind each other that we are known, seen, and loved. I’ll list a few of my favorite questions below. Take some time to answer these questions for yourself, or ask your loved ones. You won’t regret it. When you’re asked how are you, how often do you answer truthfully? What is something you wouldn’t want to change about yourself? What do you think my defining characteristic is? Give your partner a compliment you think they don’t hear enough.
If you’re interested in going deeper with conversations like these, contact CarolineStone@mdumc.org for Youth Alpha, or ColinBagby@mdumc.org for Adult Alpha.
Blessings, CAROLINE STONE

VIRT UA L MISSIONS: J A M A I CA When it became apparent our mission team would not be able to travel to work with our Jamaican partners this year, a plan to host a virtual mission began to form. Team members met to prepare for this virtual mission, to plan how to best to serve our partners, and to pray over which projects we could sponsor. They gathered and shipped VBS supplies, as well as much needed items like shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. Construction projects at the church in Richmond also began in late July. “While my heart yearns to be serving alongside friends old and new in Jamaica, hearing the melodic voice of Pastor Murphy warms my soul. My prayer partners are those with whom I’ve sung, played, taught and learned in the Hampstead and Richmond areas and brings a special joy to me. The virtual experience is unique yet still reinforces relationships and connections while spreading God’s love in Jamaica and across Texas.” - Becca Skelly, Team Member The team is comprised of members from seven different churches across Texas. Each team member prays daily for 2-3 people from our Jamaica partner churches and schools. Each night the team gathers via Zoom with Pastor Murphy in Jamaica to learn, sing, pray, and continue in community - even from afar. We are thankful to still be able to offer support through our prayers, presence, and resources. “Although, we didn’t make it to Jamaica physically this year, we are there in Spirit. I am enjoying the presentation by Pastor Murphy on the history of Jamaica and listening to him sing songs from his heritage. They begin their VBS today and I am so excited to see the kids in our meeting tonight. I think it is so important to let the people of Jamaica know that we are with them and they are in our hearts.“ - Shirley Hartmann, Team Member

BACK TO SCHOOL MISSIONS THROUGH AUGUST 30
Toby and James live in the same apartment complex, across the courtyard from each other. Toby is a year older than James and looks out for him at home, school, and around the neighborhood. Toby taught James to play checkers and they play every chance they get. Every Saturday, they walk to the local park to play on the swings and climb the jungle gym. Toby and James’ moms work for a housekeeping business, but still struggle to pay the bills. Their moms try to help each other out and are so proud of their boys. They were so worried about being able to buy new school uniforms for the boys. Thankfully, their school told them about MAM’s Back to School program and gave them vouchers to go shopping for new uniforms. Toby and James are excited to pick out uniforms together and start the new school year. You can help other children like Toby and James by committing to sponsor a child this school year. Each donation ensures that children who need clothes for school this year have the same opportunity as others to experience back to school shopping with their families and can start the school year off right. MDUMC has committed to clothing all the students at Thornwood Elementary who need uniforms this year, and we need your help to reach our goal of 120 new uniforms! Visit our online fundraising page found at mdumc.org/missions through August 30 to support this ministry. If you have any questions about our Back to School missions, please contact KandiceKirby@mdumc.org.
So far, we’ve collected 32% of our goal! That’s 38 of the 120 uniforms we will provide by the end of August. Thank you!
CROSSWALK HOUSTON UPDATE Last summer CrossWalk Houston added Community Table, a monthly lunch where students, volunteers, and church members share lunch and life, to our ministry. It soon became a favorite for everyone at CrossWalk and at the Center. We have used much-appreciated donations to cook meals and deliver to some of our students. This outreach has enabled us to stay connected, get a little face to face time, and provide needed meals to families. Thank you to everyone who prayed for CrossWalk Houston during our virtual prayer day. Students and volunteers are all excited to resume classes and life together.

RE:WORD - TOOLS FOR READING THE BIBLE ON YOUR OWN WEDNESDAYS | AUGUST 5 - 26 | 7 - 8 PM | VIA ZOOM
As we take a break from Wednesday Bible study, we still want to encourage you to study scripture on your own. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. Join Pastor Colin via Zoom to receive the tools you’ll need to study the Bible with accessible scholarly resources, to learn step-by-step processes to unpack the scriptures, and to discover how to apply the Bible to our day-to-day lives. Register online at mdumc.org/register, or contact ColinBagby@mdumc.org with any questions.

Daily reading assignments draw on the books of Deuteronomy through Chronicles. Classes meet for a total of 25 weeks, studying the Prophets and the letters traditionally attributed to Paul.

THE WALK: FIVE ESSENTIAL PRACTICES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE THURSDAYS BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 17 (6 WEEKS) | 2:00 – 3:30 | VIA ZOOM LEADER: BETTY CARTMELL | $14
Examine five essential spiritual practices rooted in Jesus’ own walk with God. How do we walk with Christ—daily follow him, grow in him, and faithfully serve him? In each chapter, Hamilton’s engaging teaching style will help you explore one of these five practices—each of which is intended to be a part of our daily walk with Christ—its New Testament foundation, and its potential effect on our personal lives and our lives together as the church.
MEDITATION FOR CHRISTIANS
ONGOING | TUESDAYS | 3 – 3:50 PM VIA ZOOM | LEADER: BETTY CARTMELL
This class is for entering into the practice of Christian meditation. We have short contemplative times before our meditation. There is time for questions and responses plus suggestions for reading and practice. Think of it as heartfulness and listening for God. All it requires is an open heart and a desire to learn this ancient practice.
YOU R R OA D M A P TO S TU D I E S A ND C L A SS E S TH IS FA LL The realities of the coming months are everchanging, but we are still making plans to learn as we study, read scripture, and explore our faith together. We hope you’ll learn with us this fall.
We invite you to look through a digital version of the MDUMC Learning Guide for Fall 2020 - available via mdumc.org/publications on August 5. Consider ways these studies and classes will make a difference in your own life as well as in the life of your church and community! As we examine our call to serve God and our neighbors, there are many opportunities in our midst to deepen and strengthen our lives - even at a distance - with the hope that we will all become better disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
