THE
MESSENGER JANUARY 2020
MEMORIAL DRIVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
@MemorialDriveUMC @mdumc
I, with many of my classmates, hoped going to seminary would provide me with all of the answers. I was excited to continue answering my call to ministry by continuing my education. I looked forward to my new life in a new city, but I was most looking forward to getting all of the answers to all of the questions I had carried around since my days in youth group. I wasn’t disappointed, but it wasn’t because I got all the answers I wanted. It was because I learned how to ask better questions. That has made all the difference for me. We live in an extraordinary time where we have access to more information than at any point in history. While in seminary, I quickly discovered how wide the gap is between what I know and what there is to know. The only way I could bridge that gap (even a little) was to ask more questions and to ask better questions. Seminary gave me the tools to dig into the unknown, to ask those big questions, and gave me the courage to say, “I don’t know.” This journey of discovery is the catalyst behind the Alpha program. Participants are invited to lean into their questions and resist trite answers. Ger Jones, a pastor in California, had over 400 participants in Alpha at his church this past year. He noticed, year after year, that an atheist couple kept coming back. They never converted. They never were baptized. They never shared any life-changing faith experiences with Ger. He asked them at Alpha one night, “You’re atheists, and yet you keep coming back to Alpha. Why?” They replied, “Because you let us ask whatever we want!” That’s why I’m looking forward to our upcoming worship series, So What? Through the month of January, we will explore big faith questions together. In this post-Christmas season, we’re faced with such questions. The baby has been born. The gifts given. The carols sung. The food eaten. The prayers prayed. The good news proclaimed – God is with us. So we ask, “So what? What does this say about me and my identity? Does this mean I’ll be okay when I face hardship? Does this help me understand my purpose? What does Jesus have to do with any of it?” I think that asking better questions beats pat answers. By questioning genuinely, prayerfully, and collectively, we deepen our faith together. I hope you’ll join us as we ask these questions together – and I hope you’ll invite someone to come question with you.
Want to try Alpha?

SAVE THE DATE - VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2020 JULY 13 - 17 | 9 AM - 12 PM
North Castle is hidden in a frozen land. The King’s valiant Knights are on a quest in search of the King’s Armor. But the armor isn’t what they think it is. Knights of North Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor invites children to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power by exploring how we put on the armor of God. Kids will take on the role of brave Knights and begin their quest each session by opening the King’s Book. They’ll explore Old and New Testament stories and discover different pieces of protective armor—the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Justice, the Shoes of Peace, the Shield of Faith, and the Helmet of Salvation—at work in the lives of familiar Bible characters, and explore how that armor works in their own lives as they follow and serve God. Registration opens March 1 at mdumc.org/kids. Volunteers are needed and appreciated!

CELEBRATING MISSIONS IN 2019
What a year! To the right you’ll see just a snapshot of the overwhelming generosity of both time and resources given throughout the year to make events like Holiday Helpers, Back to School Missions, One Great Day of Service, our Global Missions teams, and many others such a success! Without members like you giving of your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, we would not be able to serve those in our community, throughout Texas, or around the world. From myself and the rest of the MDUMC staff, thank you for all the things you’ve done in 2019 to serve our neighbors and our church family!

We hope you’ll join us when we resume on January 8, as Dr. Robbins incorporates humor and stories along with sound biblical interpretation. Mornings are study only, and evenings include weekly dinner for $8 per person ($5 for children ages 4 - 10 and free for children under 4 - no more than $25 per family). STORIES JESUS TOLD HOW TO READ A PARABLE
THURSDAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 9 (6 WEEKS) 9:30 – 11:30 AM | D204 | $16 LEADER: VICKY HARRIS
We love stories. That’s why teachers use the technique of storytelling to make a difficult concept easier for us to process. Jesus told stories, or parables, for that very reason—and to help us understand how God wants us to live life. Explore six of Jesus’ parables, by Greg Carey, to learn how to read, interpret, and live them in your daily life.
LISTENING FOR GOD
TUESDAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 21 (9 WEEKS) 2 – 4 PM | D100 | $15 LEADER: REV. SUSAN WILEY
Through contemporary literature selections, brief author profiles, and lively discussions, we “listen” for the many ways in which God speaks through the everyday experiences of our lives. Authors will include John Updike, Anne Tyler, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Tobias Wolff, Carol Bly, Gail Godwin, Kathleen Norris, and Andre Dubus.
FIERCE: WOMEN OF THE BIBLE WHO CHANGED THE WORLD
WEDNESDAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 22 (6 WEEKS) 11 AM - 12:30 PM | D203 | $14 LEADER: SANDY EARTHMAN Author Jennifer Cowart helps us discover the fierce women that changed the world through God’s calling. The Bible tells of many fierce female heroines who made hard decisions, offered hope, boldly repented, shared their faith, and blessed those around them. These fierce women can teach us how we, too, can live into our callings, honor the Lord, and even change the world through our courage, faithfulness, and obedience.
WOMEN OF THE WORD - BREAKING FREE: THE JOURNEY, THE STORIES MONDAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 27 (11 WEEKS) 6:30 – 8:30 PM | D200 | $20 LEADER: ANGE GROUT
Author Beth Moore considers Breaking Free her life message. This in-depth Bible study leads you through Isaiah 61:1-4 to discover the transforming power of Christian freedom by drawing parallels between the captive Israelites and the spiritual strongholds in our lives. No matter what life stage you’re in or struggles you’re going through, if where you are isn’t where you want to be, don’t stay there. Break free.
EASTERN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES
THURSDAYS, JANUARY 30 & FEBRUARY 6 1 – 2:30 PM OR 7 – 8:30 PM | D202 LEADER: GARLAND SMITH | NO CHARGE
The First Council of Ephesus in 431 deposed Nestorius, the Bishop in Constantinople. For the next 1,000 years, the Nestorian Church and the Jacobites would be largest and most coherent part of Christianity. The Crusades, the Turks, the Mongols, and Islam would then bring down the Eastern Christian churches. Today, few people know anything about this very colorful, vibrant, devout part of Christian heritage. This course will look at the Nestorians (the Eastern Syriac Church) and the Jacobites (the Western Syriac Church) which were such an important part of early Christianity.
