L EN T D EVOT IONAL S AVAIL ABLE THROUGH EASTER
Throughout these 40 days we will journey through the parables of Jesus together. These stories are probably familiar to you. We'll return to these texts in the coming weeks, turning them like gemstones with endless facets. We pray each turn sheds new light, reflecting God's truth back to us. These Lenten Devotionals were written by MDUMC pastors, staff, and members. We hope you'll pick up a copy for yourself (and a friend), or follow along at mdumc.org/devotional. Welcome to Lent once again. Let's live a good story together.

KN I GHT S OF NOR T H C A S TLE J ULY 13 - 17, 2020
North Castle is hidden in a frozen land. The King’s valiant Knights are on a quest in search of the King’s Armor. But the armor isn’t what they think it is. Knights of North Castle: Quest for the King’s Armor invites children to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God’s power by exploring how we put on the armor of God. Kids will take on the role of brave Knights and begin their quest by opening the King’s Book. They’ll explore Old and New Testament stories and discover different pieces of protective armor—the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Justice, the Shoes of Peace, the Shield of Faith, and the Helmet of Salvation—at work in the lives of familiar Bible characters, and explore how that armor works in their own lives as they follow and serve God.

HUNGER DOESN’T TAKE A BREAK THROUGH MARCH 8
Our Backpack Blessings ministry will be collecting food donations for Thornwood Elementary and college students at Texas Southern University to help alleviate hunger during the Spring Break holiday. There are more than 11 million children in this country who are food insecure, and the consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we want to make sure they’re getting nutritional meals over holidays, as well. You can place donations of peanut butter, jelly (no glass jars), canned soup, chili, dry pasta, rice, cereal/granola bars, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables or fruit, canned chicken or tuna, and oatmeal in the collection bins located on both campuses. Can’t donate, but would like to help serve? You can volunteer on Friday mornings from 9 - 10 AM to help distribute meal packs to students. Register for our Backpack Blessings ministry today at mdumc.org/missions.
HOLLIBROOK ELEMENTARY HOME CARE PANTRY YEAR-ROUND COLLECTION
Our Hollibrook Elementary ministry is continuing to collect home care items to help support children and families of the school. This home care pantry was created out of a need observed by teachers and school counselors. We will be collecting items year-round. They can be dropped off at any collection bin on either campus or the church office during the week. Items that are needed include: Laundry detergent (small bottles or pods), toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, shampoo, bath soap (bar type), wet wipes, trash bags, head lice shampoo kits (that include shampoo and special comb).

In February, CrossWalk hosted another successful Community Table. Students, volunteers, and neighbors shared life experiences while enjoying delicious red beans and rice from our great kitchen staff. As director of CrossWalk, I continue to be amazed at the good work done at the center for our community. The need is great. Thank you for your generous support of our mission to take the love of MDUMC and Christ into many lives. SEDONIA FINSTAD

BLOOD DRIVE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED One of the great community ministries of MDUMC has been our participation in the Gulf Coast Blood Drives for well over 20 years. We have received the “Church of the Year Award several times, out of 150 churches. The GCBC brought us a certificate a week ago stating our donations in 2019 saved 1,005 lives. We want to continue this ministry, but need new volunteers to assist the Blood Center in getting donor sign-ups and publicity. We have a good donor base who are very faithful in their donating. The Blood Center sends out staff members for the blood drives depending on the number of reservations. We always take walk- ins, but those making appointments to donate determine the number of blood center staff we receive. We are forming a new committee to coordinate our blood drives. We will include some of our regular donors, but are also looking for others who have an urge to assist us in this vital ministry. Volunteers primarily sign people up in Friendship Court/Journey Worship and call/e-mail people to make appointments to donate. In the past we have had blood drives quarterly, but will now have them only 2-3 times a year. If you would participate as a needed volunteer in this life saving ministry, please contact Rev. Jim McPhail at JimMcPhail@mdumc.org. Your participation is needed.

SENSING GOD: LEARNING TO MEDITATE DURING LENT
THURSDAYS BEGINNING MARCH 5 (5 WEEKS) 2:30 – 3:30 PM | D200 | $13 LEADER: BETTY CARTMELL Many people feel drawn to what meditation offers (quiet, reflection, stillness, time alone with God), but few have tried it. In Sensing God, monk, priest, and spiritual teacher Laurence Freeman OSB may just change some minds. Is Lent a time for “giving something up” or an occasion for beginning something new? Freeman shows how it can be both. Give up your lifestyle (at least for a season) of being too busy to sit still, and begin to discover what meditation can do in your life.

MONDAYS BEGINNING MARCH 23 (4 WEEKS) 6:30 – 8 PM | D100 LEADER: REV. VICTOR RESENDIZ What is prayer? Does it simply consist of getting something out of God or does it tap into something deeper in us? This curriculum begins the discussion of how prayer is at the core of who we are. We will hear from theologians and thinkers and provide suggestions for individual and group prayer practices.

WHY? MAKING SENSE OF GOD’S WILL
THURSDAYS BEGINNING APRIL 16 (4 WEEKS) 9:30 – 11:30 AM | D204 | $11 LEADER: VICKY HARRIS When the ground shakes, and a poor nation’s economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community’s hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations; where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to infest his creation? Author Adam Hamilton brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God.
