QUARTERLY REPORT •••• JULY - SEPTEMBER
2020
A Word From Our Senior Pastor Melchize-who? Recently, I mentioned Melchizedek in a sermon. Who is Melchizedek? A king who supports Abram in Genesis, Melchizedek anticipates how God provides us righteousness and peace in Jesus, according to Hebrews chapters 5-7. Additionally, Abram tithed one-tenth of everything to God through Melchizedek after the battle in the Valley of Kings in Genesis 14. Interestingly, Abram’s tithing to God through Melchizedek celebrated what God had done. As we teach our families and children about faithful tithing, I pray that we help them celebrate what God has done in our lives. Have you made time to teach your children about why we give? Tithing out of an appreciation of the blessings we have in life is a good place to start. We are helped by counting our blessings, and our children, friends, and loved ones are helped by our celebrating what we really believe by empowering our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are excited to share with you this quarterly report. A great team makes this report possible and we hope it celebrates what God has done through your faithfulness in these challenging times of the pandemic. This report, along with a quarterly giving statement, is being sent to all members and will hopefully provide cause for celebrating what God is doing. Faithful commitment from people like you is making a difference! We believe that the ministries of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church are important to you and our community and ask that you take a step of faithfulness with us to ensure that they continue to thrive. With celebration, we are learning, living, giving, and serving as followers of Jesus. Grace and peace,
Dr. Brad Morgan

LEARNING
We launched 22 Bible studies this fall, including Pastor Brad’s study in the book of Romans. We kicked off our 6th Alpha course with Pastor Colin and 30 new participants. Pastor Colin also led us in a new study, Re:Word, which gave us helpful tools to read the Bible on our own. Pastor Jennifer helped us get online with our new digital resource platform, Amplify Media, to bring a whole library of video-based Bible studies and more right to our home screens. We also continued to stream Daily Word reflections, Sunday worship, and more, reaching an average of 9,525 people per week!
LIVING
On July 12, we welcomed Dr. Brad Morgan for his first Sunday as Senior Pastor of MDUMC! Dr. Morgan, along with the pastoral staff, had the honor of confirming 72 students as full members of our church. We welcomed church members home to in-person worship on September 27, and presented 56 of our 3rd graders with their very own Bibles in a special ceremony during worship. Children from Pre-K to 5th grade participated in a virtual VBS experience, bringing joy to 250 church and community families. Our parking lot was filled for two more Pop-Up Worship services, led by the Journey Band and clergy staff, and focused on the importance of living in community with one another. Finally, Pastor Jennifer introduced Living Room, a new recurring opportunity to explore community at MDUMC.
GIVING
Because of your giving, after Hurricane Laura devastated areas of Louisiana and Southeast Texas, MDUMC was able to give $10,000 in donations to the Louisiana Conference for their relief efforts. We introduced a new opportunity to support the Caring Forever Foundation by becoming a Patron, and helping to underwrite annual operating costs. In lieu of our annual Caring Forever Foundation banquet, funds were raised through the sale of BBQ made by our very own MDUMC kitchen. Ongoing BBQ sales have gone to support other ministries such as Camp Hope, Soupmobile, and more. Since reopening our doors for inperson worship, we’re thankful for the volunteers who have given their time to help create a safe and welcoming environment for all. As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated!
SERVING
In partnership with the Restoration Team, MDUMC served as a West Houston area drop-off site for donations for those affected by Hurricane Laura. We were able to send 35 pallets of tools, home goods, food, baby items, and more. We were also able to offer The Restoration Team $2,500 in giftcards for families who are moving back into their homes after damage done by Hurricane Harvey. We have packed over 1,500 food donation bags and offered Home Care Pantry donations each week for Hollibrook students and families in need. Mentors have faithfully continued virtual meetings with their students, totaling over 40 mentors throughout Spring Branch ISD. We’ve also continued to provide our Soupmobile bags to over 200 people experiencing homelessness each week.
Take part in all this and more by taking your next step in learning, living, giving, and serving at mdumc.org/nextsteps.
