BEG INNING WITH PRA I SE As PK’s (preacher’s kids), my children were never bashful about praying. When John was five, he was very excited about starting kindergarten. Every Sunday for several months, he would pray the same prayer. He prayed that school would begin… Soon! John was ready. The Sunday after kindergarten had begun, after church on the drive home, John asked me, “Dad, how long will I have to school?” I told him that he would have to go to school for at least thirteen years (kindergarten + 12 grades). But, I continued and let him know that because he was very smart and worked hard he would probably go to a university for another 4 years. And, that he might even go to graduate school one day for another 2-6 years depending on the degrees he sought. “That’s a long time” he said. I looked in the rear view mirror and I could see the wheels in John’s head turning. A look of realization crossed his face, “Dad, how long do I have to go to church?” Laura and I laughed at the seriousness of the question. I took a moment to compose myself. “Well, John that depends on what you think church is.” I explained, “If church is singing the eternal praise of God from the depths of our souls, we hope to go to church forever.” What do you think church is? In this time that we are unable to congregate, how do we continue to praise God? As you reflect, Psalm 146 might be helpful. This psalm exhorts the people of God to “Praise the Lord!” We are reminded in the now to join in the eternal song of praise by allowing God’s eternal melody of love to flow through us in praise of God’s glory whether we can gather with others or not. Praise is an essential action for those who would follow the Lord. In praise, we learn to trust in God and not princes or mortals. “Their plans perish.” When we praise God, we become open to the one who “keeps faith forever.” In praise, we come to know the nature of the God we claim to love as we learn how God keeps faith forever. When we make time to completely focus on praising God, God’s nature is revealed. Read the Psalm aloud and listen to the nature of God and our role revealed in the verbs from this beautiful Psalm of praise, 146. We praise. We trust. We hope. God blesses. God executes justice. God gives food. God sets the prisoner free. God opens eyes. God lifts up. God loves. God watches over the strangers. God upholds the orphan and the widows. God reigns forever! As we follow the Lord and try to keep praising God even when we can’t congregate, praise reminds us that we are not alone. When we make time for praise, we become caught up in an eternal song of the divine. God gives food to the hungry, sets free the captive, and cares for the widow, orphan, and stranger. Praise conforms our will to God’s will. Through praise, we learn to trust God when our own efforts fail. And when we encounter a world that seems so vastly different from God’s will and live in a culture which does not seem to value people as God does, in praise, we renew our strength to love those who others would leave out. We learn not to grow weary in our compassion for those whom God loves. We rely on the strength of God, not our own for the transformation of the world. And, we learn to dare to hope. When we are able to congregate again, I hope you continue in praise.
Grace and peace,

October 19th - November 2nd HeartsandHandsMarket.org
All proceeds support missions for women and children. Life as we know it has completely changed because of the Covid 19 pandemic. We all think, work and shop differently now. As the pandemic continues, we have made the responsible decision to keep our vendors, volunteers, staff and shoppers safe by changing our Hearts and Hands Holiday Market this year to a virtual event. This decision was not made lightly, as Hearts and Hands is so important to our community. Thanks to our outstanding vendors and happy shoppers each year, all proceeds from the market are given to women’s and children’s ministries. Now, more than ever, too much is at stake to cancel the event. These ministries are counting on our Virtual Holiday Market so they can continue to help others. Although we will miss all the excitement of our 34th physical market, shoppers will have the opportunity to do their holiday shopping with their favorite vendors while staying safe. Mission Stitchers will have all their beautiful handcrafted items on the website for your shopping pleasure. If you know of a Vendor who would like to participate in the Hearts and Hands Virtual Holiday Market please respond to heartshandsmdumc@gmail.com and we will be happy to send them an application. For more information on becoming a part of this rewarding event, please contact JudyBrewer@mdumc.org.

SUPPORTING THOSE IMPACTED BY HURRICANE LAURA THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
We’re thankful for your generosity in our response to those who have been impacted by Hurricane Laura! Your donations of tarps, construction supplies, non-perishable food, and other items are much needed and are already being put to use! If you are interested in helping with any upcoming relief and recovery efforts (Cleanup Team, Compassionate Care, Supply Distribution, etc.), when it’s safe to do so, we invite you to fill out the Volunteer Interest Form found at mdumc. org/laura, or you can call or text (812) 610-1963 to to speak to an MDUMC staff member about your interest in serving. This is not a commitment to serve, but rather just a way to let us know that you are interested in serving in some capacity and would like more information as it becomes available.
BACK TO SCHOOL MISSIONS - THANK YOU!
Thank you to every one of you who generously gave to our Back to School uniform drive. Because of your giving, we were able to partner with Memorial Assistance Ministries to provide a full uniform set including a shirt, pants, underwear, socks, and shoes to 126 students (totaling over $6,200) at Thornwood Elementary and other surrounding SBISD schools. Your assistance in this ministry has made a difference in the lives of each of these children and their families. We could not do this work without your giving and service to all of our partner schools. If you would still like to donate to this ministry to help other children in SBISD, our online fundraising page will be available to donate to through the end of September. Please visit mdumc.org/missions for more information.
HOLLIBROOK ELEMENTARY HOME CARE PANTRY
TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS | ADULT MINISTRIES CENTER | 10 AM - NOON Our Hollibrook Elementary ministry is continuing to collect home care items to help support children and families of the school. This home care pantry was created out of a need seen by teachers and school counselors. We will be collecting items year-round. Items that are needed include: Laundry detergent (small bottles or pods), toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, shampoo, bath soap (bar type), trash bags, and head lice kits.
CROSSWALK HOUSTON UPDATE After such prolonged absence, it is beautiful to see faces of volunteers and students back at the Outreach Center as we slowly begin our small tutoring sessions. CrossWalk Houston provides these students with more than education. It’s a place of inclusion and acceptance and love and community. Our students have missed that interaction and we are all experiencing much joy in reuniting. As always, thank you for your prayers and continued support as we take the love of Christ and MDUMC into our neighborhood.

THE CARING FOREVER FOUNDATION SUPPORTS ONLINE WORSHIP
The sudden shift to online church heightened MDUMC’s need for two new cameras, and The Caring Forever Foundation quickly awarded the church a $5,000 grant for this necessary technology upgrade. With these two new 4K cameras, the media department works faster and produces better quality videos. The cameras have improved the church’s many online offerings that have become a necessity in this season and will continue to be a vital tool for church’s media ministry beyond this season, as the media ministry creates engaging videos to share the church’s story. To learn more about how you can support the Caring Forever Foundation, contact the CFF office at 713-468-8356 ext. 241 or StacyStepler@mdumc.org.
