Eye of the beholder Iris recognition authenticates airport IDs by Mohammed Murad

O

fficials have long sought fast, accurate and convenient security tools for safely moving passengers through crowded airports. However, the COVID-19 pandemic acted as a speed bump to international air travel, reducing last year’s passenger total by half compared to an all-time 2019 peak. However, those numbers again are rising and anticipated to meet or exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2023. As passengers return, airports

and government agencies must deploy systems that assist travelers to safely navigate the terminal from the curb to the boarding gate. It’s time for airports to undergo a technology makeover to eliminate the need for passengers to arrive at an airport two to three hours before takeoff. Biometric-based solutions are ideal for a crowded, fast-paced airport environment. Several factors contribute to airports’ growing demand for biometrics, including

reduced costs for mature and proven technologies. Airport officials see biometrics as game-changers that provide rapid and accurate identity authentication. Also, passengers are increasingly familiar with biometrics as most smartphones use them to authenticate user identities. Adding biometrics throughout many airport processes eliminates a passengers’ need to fumble with an identification card, passport and boarding pass. Beginning at baggage check-in, a kiosk-based biometric

“Biometric-based solutions are ideal for a crowded, fast-paced airport environment.” reader almost instantly recognizes enrolled passengers and their intended destination, authorizing the printing of an adhesive tag attached to the bag before placing it on a conveyor belt headed to the tarmac. The process takes seconds and multiple kiosks at each airline ticket counter contribute to maintaining shorter lines. Airport administrators cannot count on government agents accurately identifying passengers by looking at an aging photo on a driver’s license or passport. Biometric-equipped, self-serve kiosks are ideal for the travel document checker (TDC) process, freeing many agents to assist with other airport security operations to optimize customer services. TDC kiosks are in growing numbers at airports worldwide.

Which biometric? Each of the three major biometric technologies, fingerprint, facial and iris recognition, has advantages. But iris recognition systems have been proven to provide the quickest and most accurate identity authentication results. The iris, the colored part of the eye surrounding the pupil, has 240 points of recognition – many more than other biometrics technologies. Also, each iris is unique, leading to fewer false positives involving identical twins, other family members, or even members of the same ethnic background. And since the iris remains unchanged during a person’s lifetime, children can be enrolled to use an airport identity authentication system at a very young age. Also, iris systems are ideal for use during a pandemic. Unlike most fingerprint readers, they are

touchless and work seamlessly with personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and goggles. Iris Recognition In Use London’s Heathrow Airport began testing iris-based identification system as early as 2002. The U.K.’s current 2025 Border Strategy is a five-year plan to improve national security by using contactless biometric solutions, including iris-based systems and their data, as the sole authentication requirement for cross-border travel. Other major airports around the world are using iris-based biometric systems. Here’s a look at several. Dubai International, United Arab Emirates – The world’s busiest airport for international travel, recently added scores of iris recognition equipped gates. It takes only two seconds for passengers to

look into a contactless iris reader before moving through passport control without any need for any human interaction to leave or enter the country. Nexus (Canada) – One of the most significant airport projects is a joint Canadian Border Services and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection program. Nexus expedites the security process for pre-approved travelers moving between Canada and the U.S. using self-serve kiosks with embedded iris recognition equipment at nine major Canadian international airports. The system also protects 21 dedicated vehicular border crossing lanes and more than 450 Canadian marine sites for travelers arriving by boat. Enrolled travelers may also use the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s Pre-Check lines in 6 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

more than 180 U.S. airports. Amsterdam Schiphol, The Netherlands – Europe’s third busiest airport by passenger volume operates its Privium program enabling Dutch citizens to move through boarding and customs lines using iris scans. At enrollment, their digital iris templates are stored on a high-security card. Program members insert their cards into a reader and simultaneously scan their irises to pass through a security gate. If there’s a match, the gate opens. Travelers from certain other European countries can clear customs in 15 seconds or less using the Privium program. CLEAR – A New York-based private company, employs kiosks with embedded iris authentication systems to identify enrolled travelers in more than 30 major

U.S. airports. Also used at some stadiums and arenas, the CLEAR service has completed more than 33 million identity authentications. Passengers using the kiosks move through security in a fraction of time compared to those using regular security lanes. Mohammed Murad is vice president, global development and sales for US-based Iris ID, the world leader in iris recognition platform deployment. Build-to-rent housing reimagined with mobile keys and energy-efficient wireless access Becorp is a disruptive force in Barcelona’s domestic rental market. At a growing portfolio of multi-home complexes, they offer contemporary apartments with inclusive onsite resident services such as concierge, swimming pool, gym and co-working. Having used mechanical lock-and-key security in past projects, Becorp are aware of its drawbacks in both cost and management time. For a planned new build-to-rent development in the city, they sought a modern electronic alternative. A keyless solution would save property management time, which is often spent handling hundreds of physical keys. The burden on staff is especially great when properties are newly occupied or vacated, a regular occurrence in large build-to-rent complexes. They targeted a wireless solution to combine greater control with cost efficiency; a range of adaptable devices to secure multiple door types, including fire doors; and modern security to project an appealing, dynamic image for Becorp housing. Spain’s first residences with all-wireless access control and mobile keys With over 1,000 individual homes at their new buildto-rent development, Becorp knew mechanical security would create a huge workload. Each apartment requires 5 keys per cylinder — many thousands in total. Rental turnover is often high. This means regular cylinder and key changes, eating up even more management time and resources. Their chosen solution — SMARTair® Wireless Online with mobile keys managed by the Openow™ app — incorporates around 3000 battery-powered Escutcheons, 200 Knob Cylinders and 125 Wall Readers. Just under 400 Communications HUBs communicate between doors and the software system in real time. With Online system management, security staff can

check the live status of any access point, open doors remotely or lock-down in case of an emergency. Residents use secure mobile keys in their own Openow smartphone app, instead of a physical keys. The app also enables easy locking by deadbolt projection: After presenting their phone, a resident simply moves the handle upwards to lock a door securely. Facilities staff stay in control by using the Openow app for credential management: Virtual keys can be created, sent and cancelled from anywhere, with no metal keys to administer. No locks need to be changed when someone loses a credential. “Physical key management for any large development puts severe pressure on operational costs,” says Becorp’s Xavier Casals. “Choosing SMARTair wireless locks and mobile management via Openow helps us to minimize them.” Battery power for improved energy efficiency Energy efficiency is another important ethos behind Becorp’s new development. Because SMARTair locks are wireless and battery powered, they consume much less power than equivalent wired locking — supporting efforts to promote more sustainable domestic living. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are available for many SMARTair devices: These detailed life-cycle audits help customers like Becorp to make informed choices about their footprint during the construction and specification of a building. At Becorp’s new Barcelona development, SMARTair and Openow ensure cost, time and energy efficiency all work hand in hand. Stansted Airport deploys Videalert CCTV for parking compliance

London Stansted Airport has installed Videalert CCTV enforcement cameras to eliminate the incidence of tailgating as drivers attempt to leave the drop off zones and short term car parks without paying. The cameras were switched on in February 2021 and were supplied as part of an ongoing contract with NSL, the UK’s leading provider of parking enforcement services, which includes back office processing and debt recovery services. According to Steve Mills, Surface Access Manager – Landside Operations at London Stansted Airport: “NSL has provided us with a cost effective enforcement solution that will enable us to rapidly achieve high levels of compliance, particularly in respect of the repeat offenders that try to avoid paying their parking charges. This has been a particular issue in short term car parks where people have routinely stayed two weeks without paying. The cameras will help us to eliminate lost parking revenues and improve safety for all passengers around the airport.” Videalert CCTV enforcement cameras have been installed at the exits of the drop off zones and short term parking. Each camera monitors two lanes simultaneously capturing the numberplates of every vehicle that passes through the barriers. They transmit

data to Videalert’s hosted digital video platform where evidence packs are automatically compiled for review by operators at NSL’s Oldham Shared Service Centre. Penalty charge notices are then sent to the owners of all vehicles committing an offence. NSL has also provided the airport with a Videalert mobile enforcement vehicle (MEV) to reduce the incidence of drivers stopping or parking on access road verges. These roads are designated as no stopping areas and the MEV will act as a deterrent to the many taxis, private hire vehicles, friends and relatives that cause traffic congestion and safety issues in these areas by waiting to drop off or pick up passengers. With front and rear facing cameras, the MEV automatically captures the numberplates of stopped vehicles in unattended mode and transmits footage to the Videalert platform. Mark Jones, Operations Director at Videalert, added: “This is one of the first such installations of Videalert cameras on private land and demonstrates the breadth of our range of integrated transport and enforcement solutions.” For further information, please visit www.marstonholdings.co.uk/videalert IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 9

Since that day the support we have had from BigChange has been excellent.” For further information visit www.bigchange.com

Data and images from the high-resolution Panomera® multifocal sensor systems now via 4G or 5G as well

Recording and cellular module in the “Mountera® Box” With immediate effect, users now benefit from the advantages of the patented Dallmeier “Panomera®” multifocal sensor systems at locations with only 4G or 5G connectivity. All that is needed is the “Mountera® Box with SRS Edge” with the Edge recording system and a suitable LTE, LTE+ or 5G module. From cities to airports and further to industrial operations of all sizes: customers appreciate the advantages of Panomera® multifocal sensor technology. These include a precisely plannable minimum resolution over the entire area, highest image and data quality, and optimal allowance for differences in dynamic settings. In operational deployment, this means minimal expenditure for infrastructure and overall costs as well as the ability to incorporate any number of “virtual PTZ camera perspectives” in one overall image instead of being reduced to a limited number of PTZ systems. When capturing data for analysis, multifocal sensor technology also delivers consistent image and thus also data quality over the entire area. Seamless integration in total systems Until now, however, there have been limits to the video

streaming of Panomera® cameras at “remote locations”, such as large construction sites, solar parks, and any other location with poor network infrastructure. But now, the technology from Germany is available to users even without the requisite connection: With the installation of a 4G or 5G router in the “Mountera® Box with SRS Edge”, the waterproof mounting box from the Mountera® product family, all current Panomera® systems can be connected via mobile network. “More and more customers also want to use the excellent image quality and high effective resolution of up to 190 megapixels offered by Panomera® systems even at sites where a good quality internet connection does not exist”, says Christian Linthaler, Sales Director National & International at Dallmeier. “With the “Mountera® Box with SRS Edge”, this problem has been solved. In creating this solution, we paid particular attention to making sure that it can be integrated seamlessly in the total system, and a ‘makeshift workaround’ would not be needed.” For more information please visit www.dallmeier.com

Supply chain issues in the fire and security industry Impact on product compliance and the Green Deal

S

ince the corona pandemic introduced the world to the concept of “the new normal,” nothing is normal anymore. A simple incident can be disastrous for something as vital as the supply chain as we have seen with the blockage of the Suez Canal. The essence of that chain is to give companies the certainty that raw materials and components are available in order to produce the finished goods. The pandemic

22 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

resulted in lockdowns, and a high demand because of digitization together with economic recovery. This meant that this certainty is challenged. When manufacturers are looking for alternative material and components they can face re-certification of their products, or new developed products cannot be released. As a result of this existing products must stay longer available. The fire safety and security market is highly dependent on electronics and

with that the industry is affected by the supply chain crisis. Supply chains are formed by complex connections between companies. It starts with the raw materials and ends with finished goods for industry and end user. One chain can include up to thousands of companies. This is not a problem because, thanks to proven forecasting methods, the activities of the companies in the supply chain are precisely coordinated. This considers

demand, supply, seasonal influences or specific characteristics of regions. What is not considered - and what is not possible - are unknown factors. These can lead to the forecasts no longer being correct. The well-oiled machine of the supply chain then quickly starts to creak and squeak. COVID-19 One unknown factor the world faced in 2019 was COVID-19. This made it clear that society is not prepared for events that are not likely to happen but can have a major impact on society. Unfortunately, the start of pandemic happened in a country where a large part of the world’s production takes place. For years, Western companies have located parts of their production there. When the production heart of the world temporarily stops beating, the world comes to a standstill. Problems in the supply chain are a direct consequence. Several industries had problems even before COVID-19. Producers of chips, computer parts and other components needed for the digitalization of our society were already under great pressure. The production capacity of these goods is limited worldwide and the slightest change in demand can cause supply problems. This was already the case with smartphones, (game) computers or televisions. Chips had already entered the automotive

industry on a large scale, and with the electrification of this industry, the demand for chips soared. We see a similar development in industries and parts of society where the (Industrial) Internet of Things is becoming commonplace. Risky dependencies The consequences of the corona crisis have led many governments to recognize that the high dependence on producers out of one region poses a great a risk to certain sectors. For example, the fact that many European countries have no production capacity for facemasks which were needed during the pandemic, is perhaps the best example of this. For electronic chips and components we face the same challenge; to reduce the risks there is simply a need for more and better distributed production facilities. In the pursuit of lean manufacturing, production has been outsourced to Asia which means that a shutdown of factories in one country can have a global impact. The EU also recognized this even before the pandemic. Accelerated by the corona crisis, the EU is focusing its policy, among other things, on increasing domestic capacity and diversifying the number of suppliers. Following the rapid spread of the coronavirus in China, European companies were affected. The lockdowns introduced in China led to a virtual standstill in production and

restricted the freedom of movement of residents, which also brought logistics providers to a standstill. As quickly as companies were caught off guard by these lockdowns, the recovery in demand was also swift. For many companies that were caught off guard by global lockdowns, the speed of recovery is almost as insidious and led to another supply chain crisis during the pandemic. Increased consumer spending and thus demand for products, combined with delayed transportation by sea and air caused major shortages and record backlogs. The tightness on container capacity is expected to continue for some time. This will not help to clear shortages of electronic components, which is expected to continue for some time. Effects on the Fire Safety and Security industry The supply chain crisis caused by the pandemic also affects companies in the fire safety and security industry. The effects not only concern the manufacturers of equipment but also companies in the field of service and maintenance of systems. Outside this there are other areas that can impact building safety. An example of this is that recommended emergency escape routes that were in place before the lockdowns are now mixed with the one-way traffic signs intended to allow employees to pass at a safe distance from each other.

IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 23

Manufacturers of electronic fire safety and security equipment are affected by the disruption in transport and shortages on natural resources and core materials. COVID-19 has shown that unexpected events can shatter the basic premise that materials will be easily accessible, disrupting supply chain performance. The chain reaction initially caused by the shutdown of factories in countries effected not only the supply chains but also the workflows within and between companies. Product compliance Paul van der Zanden, General Director of Euralarm adds: “Another relevant topic that affects our industry is the compliance of the products that the industry delivers. With electronic components not being available due to the supply chain problems, manufacturers need to reconsider replacement of parts that aren’t available. However, with the replacement of certain components, the conformity of the final product may also be at stake.” This could make it necessary to have the product retested and recertified. High (and unnecessary) costs could result from this. When service and maintenance companies were faced with problems 24 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

in reaching the customers during the pandemic, these organizations learned other flexible ways to stay in contact with their customers. Many industries and businesses have started modifying their operational methods. They are now operating their business online. The fire safety and security industry is doing the same by starting virtual offices and using remote service and diagnostic tools to support their customers. Customers are moving to hybrid working models which are applied throughout society and could lead to downsizing or repurposing of buildings. This also can require that the fire safety and security requirements need to be adapted to the new use or size of the building. Effects for the Green Deal Securing a sustainable supply of metals and minerals used for components in fire safety and security equipment is also key to meet the energy and climate targets for 2030 and beyond. The European Green Deal aims to make the EU’s economy sustainable. That creates many opportunities for the European society and industry in the current context of both the climate crisis and the COVID-19-outbreak. However, the transition towards green technologies, like renewable

energy, e-mobility and stationary energy storage relies heavily on critical raw materials, such as cobalt, neodymium, tungsten, etc. and on new products and services. Both globally and in Europe it is expected that the demand for these materials will continue to increase. This can create challenges for the Green Deal. The impact of extracting and processing these resources is high while the supply chains are often not transparent and may lack traceability. Another challenge is the recycling of the materials. For most critical raw materials, the recycling efficiencies are low while the dependency on non-EU countries is high and still increasing. The green ambitions of the EU could therefore also lead to certain activities being brought back to the West either to reduce the dependency of non-EU countries or to avoid CO2 emission as result of transporting goods from other parts of the world to Europe. This could lead to shorter logistics chains and more sustainability in several sectors. In that sense the current crisis in the high-tech supply chains contributes to a greener world and a stronger Europe. For further information please visit www.euralarm.org

SECURITY INTEGRATION

The security tech innovations adding value to home working Lee Copland, Managing Director of Maxxess EMEA looks at how facial recognition and integration advances made during the pandemic will have a lasting impact

I

t’s almost two years since the first pandemic lockdowns and in some countries, we are seeing work from home policies being relaxed. At the same time, employers are asking if it’s possible

26 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

to keep some of the dividends of home working. Regardless of whether lockdown policies are being enforced or lifted, plenty of organisations are now attracted to the hybrid model. Having

been forced to embrace new ways of working, they have discovered the benefits that can come with a reduced physical premises footprint: cost savings, operational flexibility, and sometimes increased

productivity. And in many cases being based at home, for at least part of the week, is popular with employees. But some business leaders have been arguing that improved work-life balance comes at a cost, with a negative impact on competitiveness, customer service and performance. Retail boss Sir John Timpson is on record warning that firms which allow offices to become occasional meeting places will increasingly be at a competitive disadvantage. And Japan’s Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry has suggested that working from home in that country has reduced productivity by almost a third. As they weigh up the pros and cons of hybrid working, employers are also having to deal with the impact of labour shortages, and the so-called ‘great resignation’. Some, like Octavius Black, CEO of the behavioural science consultancy MindGym, believe that current staff shortages are being driven in some cases by home working, because weakened workplace ties have made jobs less appealing. Quoted in the FT he argues that working from home is “dissipating the social capital that you need to be a successful, complex organisation”. So how can employers get the balance right, and keep the advantages of hybrid working

without the downsides? A new generation of integrated communications, monitoring and engagement tools might provide a big part of the answer. These solutions were already emerging before the pandemic and have advanced further over the last two years. What makes them so interesting is that while they are increasingly powerful, they don’t come with a high price tag. Their functionality is also being developed at a surprising rate as new applications are identified, customer by customer. They are a progression of the integrated site security and building management solutions, which for

some time have been streamlining corporate systems and cutting out the inefficiencies of siloed technologies in busy workplaces from hospitals, commerical offices and hospitality to transportation hubs. An important advantage of bringing together key systems and integrating them with Microsoft Active Directory and other core office data systems is that organisations can manage access to multiple, dispersed physical premises - and access to networks - much more effectively. Upgrading access control and implementing visitor management solutions is allowing employers to

IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 27

remove many of the old annoyances and inconveniences that employees, contractors, and other site visitors had to put up with every time they arrived on site and had to pass through security. Now, these visitors benefit from touchless, frictionless access - and this is just the public facing aspect of a deep level solution that integrates HR databases and scheduling systems with security, allowing organisations to automate what was once a cumbersome process. The next generation solutions are going further by strengthening and extending the connections between remotely based teams and corporate hubs or head offices. It’s now possible, for example, to integrate AI-powered facial recognition with these solutions. The result is not just improved security at physical premises – with facial recognition providing a powerful ID option - but improved network security and more secure home working too. With facial recognition, remote monitoring can ensure that only authorised employees view and work with sensitive data. If that authorised individual moves away from their laptop – or if another trigger event occurs such as a somebody looking over their shoulder, or the door of a secure home office is left open access can immediately time-out. 28 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

The same AI technology will detect any attempt to deceive the system using a photograph or digital image and ensure a high degree of authentication accuracy. These tools can be tailored to the security level required by the user - in the case of a bank or government department, for example, the access restrictions can be more rigorous, with a smaller business where employees need to be nimble, it can be more flexible. These tools are powerful and need to be introduced carefully alongside clear policies to prevent infringement of employee privacy rights, or the risk of alienating staff with unwarranted monitoring. Of course, the technology that home workers are now so familiar with can already show managers when they are, or are not, online. Skype, WebEx, Microsoft Meetings, WhatsApp, Slack, etc. and shared calendars have all been used by employers attempting to monitor employee activity – although a recent article in The Economist pointed out that staff can also make themselves appear busier than they actually are by keeping chat apps open on phones, for example, or using communications tools for non-work purposes. But with better technology, a more constructive two-way engagement is possible between employees and employers. Are people taking breaks from their

desks as often as they should? Are they working longer hours that they should be or still working at the weekend when they should be resting? Do they want to report a concern anonymously? Do they need emergency help? Employees need to be able to answer these questions whether their staff are at home or in the office, not just to meet their duty of care obligations but to maintain well motivated and loyal teams. Speaking to the BBC in January, Joanna Swash, CEO of outsourced call services provider Moneypenny reflected on the recruitment challenges that many businesses are facing. She pointed out that people are looking not just for jobs but for a great employer: “This is a new world we’re all operating in. It’s not about bums on seats anymore, it’s about treating people as an individual, making sure that they’re looked after”. We now have some exciting integration tools and AI technologies to support that change, while strengthening security, meeting duty of are obligations and increasing engagement with staff. And that’s a win-win for businesses and employees. For further information please visit https://maxxess-efusion.com

Hardy requirements A closer look at the hard drive requirements for video surveillance

T

he video surveillance market is booming. Whether in retail, on public transport, the perimeters of company buildings or in public places – surveillance cameras are now taken for granted in many places. However, with the growing number of cameras and the higher resolution video streams, the demands on the storage solutions used are increasing. Hard drive manufacturers, as a result, offer special HDDs for video surveillance. Toshiba Electronics Europe explains

30 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

what sets these drives apart: Long service life In video surveillance systems, HDDs usually run around the clock. Surveillance HDDs are hence designed for 24/7 operation and typically have an MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) of one million operating hours. This corresponds to an AFR (Annualised Failure Rate) of 0.88%. For example, in an installation with 1000 drives, statistically about nine drives would fail per year. Desktop HDDs, on the other hand, which

were built for runtimes between 8 and 16 hours per day, usually only achieve an MTTF of 600,000 hours. In continuous operation, this equals an AFR of 1.46% and about 15 failures per year for 1000 drives. High resilience Video surveillance produces large amounts of data that hard drives must store continuously, which puts a strain on the mechanical components. Surveillance HDDs are ,therefore, highly robust and can handle an annual workload of up to

180TB. Desktop HDDs, which have fewer accesses and handle smaller amounts of data, are typically rated for only 55 TB per year. When used in a video surveillance system, this amount of data would be reached quickly, and the probability of errors and failure would increase rapidly. High performance Hard drives in the video surveillance sector often have to process several high-resolution video streams in parallel. Surveillance HDDs, therefore, include optimised firmware and larger buffer memories than desktop HDDs, which ensure that all data is stored reliably and without errors - even with up to 64 HD streams. Simultaneous read access is no problem, and the recorded video material can also be read out and checked. However, if special AI evaluations are to be used,

which in addition to the high write loads also cause high read loads, the use of even more powerful enterprise HDDs is worthwhile. Temperature resistance Video surveillance systems are not always located in air-conditioned data centres or well-ventilated offices. As a result, surveillance HDDs are designed for a wider temperature range than desktop HDDs, so their components do not wear out as quickly. Typically, they can handle operating temperatures between 0 and 70°C, while desktop HDDs are usually designed for a range between 0 and 60°C, which is the range found in air-conditioned rooms and server rooms. Compatibility HDD manufacturers subject their surveillance HDDs to extensive

compatibility and function tests in a wide variety of video recorders. This ensures that the drives work perfectly with the devices. If you

IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 31

want to be accurate, take a look at the manufacturers’ compatibility lists or rely on complete solutions where experienced integrators have already equipped the systems with suitable hard drives. Desktop HDDs do not pass such tests in surveillance systems - so there is no guarantee that they will work smoothly in the devices or offer optimum performance. Vibration protection In systems that need to provide a large amount of storage capacity, there are a large number of HDDs whose rotational vibrations can mutually amplify each other. Highcapacity surveillance HDDs are therefore often equipped with special sensors that detect these vibrations. Smart control mechanisms adjust the operating parameters so that the effect is minimised, and the drive performance is not impaired. Desktop 32 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

HDDs lack these sensors and control mechanisms. “Companies should equip their NVRs and DVRs with surveillance HDDs that have been designed to meet the demanding requirements of video surveillance”, explains André Grabon, Senior Specialist B2B Sales in the Storage Products Division of Toshiba Electronics Europe. “Desktop HDDs may be less costly, but they are neither able to cope with continuous operation nor the high workloads. Companies who buy the cheapest product may find that they have a higher risk of failure and overall, higher maintenance and repair costs.” Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) is the European electronic components business of Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corporation. TEE offers European consumers and businesses a wide variety of innovative hard disk drive

(HDD) products plus semiconductor solutions for automotive, industrial, IoT, motion control, telecoms, networking, consumer and white goods applications. Next to HDDs, the company’s broad portfolio encompasses power semiconductors and other discrete devices ranging from diodes to logic ICs, optical semiconductors as well as microcontrollers and application specific standard products (ASSPs) amongst others. TEE has its headquarters in Düsseldorf, Germany, and branch offices in France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom providing marketing, sales and logistic services. High value, high stakes Protecting high-value assets and guests at the Londoner Hotel with the Wisenet X series and Wisenet WAVE

T

he Londoner Hotel heralds a new kind of hotel. Dubbed the ‘super boutique hotel’ The Londoner is situated on one of the world’s most iconic squares, a true London landmark, with high calibre guests to match. The building spans 16 storeys, with five different restaurants and bars, a subterranean wellness floor

38 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

with spa and gym, and 350 rooms and suites. High value, high stakes The hotel features many high-value pieces of artwork and furniture located throughout its communal and guest spaces. Many high profile guests also frequent The Londoner. This poses some unique security

challenges for the Edwardian Hotels London security team. Not only do physical assets need to be highly protected, but the team needs a quick way to investigate events, and for the surveillance system to seamlessly fit in with The Londoner’s discerning interior design. With many people visiting and working on-site, having an intuitive and detailed surveillance

system was paramount. The best video surveillance solution As Tarik Khamliche, MD of SLAM Systems (the system integrator for the project) explains, “There was a clear focus on getting the best cameras and VMS to ensure security was optimised for The Londoner, there were no blind spots, and events could be investigated easily. Simultaneously, camera devices needed to blend in well with the different themes and unique colourways in each bar, restaurant, corridor, and other spaces.” Having worked with Hanwha Techwin for several years, with the Wisenet X series and Wisenet WAVE VMS tested in other hotels in the Edwardian Hotels London portfolio,

the team decided that the Wisenet X series 5MP network cameras and Wisenet WAVE were ideal for protecting The Londoner. In total, 560 cameras have been installed across the site with six servers working to store, back up, and analyse footage. As no downtime can be afforded, each server is configured to back up another if it fails. Clear images for investigations The Wisenet X series cameras come with Hanwha Techwin’s proprietary Wisenet 7 chipset that enables features such as eXtreme WDR, and 100% lens distortion correction. This delivers high quality, clear images to The Londoner team so they can see an event occurring and the details of what has happened.

Rapid, remote investigations enabled The Wisenet WAVE VMS offers a reliable, easy-to-use system for the Londoner team to quickly search footage, look at specific areas in the hotel, and support investigations post-event. Alerts automatically go to Mohamed Elsabahy, group CCTV manager for Edwardian Hotels London, if cameras, servers or hard drives fail to enable rapid response and avoid unnecessary downtime. Through Wisenet WAVE, cameras can be configured and viewed remotely if needed, across all hotels in the collection which have the VMS installed. “Through WAVE, I can remotely access any hotel’s video system and review its footage without spending time travelling to

IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 39

the site. It saves a lot of time and effort, and makes events much more accessible as I can quickly view what’s happened through my laptop or smartphone,” explains Mohamed Elsabahy, Group CCTV Manager. Time and effort savings The biggest benefit to The Londoner team has come through saving time and effort when investigating an event. Smart Search enables operators to quickly see when action has occurred in a pre-defined area such as part of a corridor, a corner of a bar, or by entrances and exits. They can quickly search through all footage to find those relevant to an investigation. A feature that is vital for a hotel of such scale. 40 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

Looking ahead Future plans for the site include integrating the video surveillance system with the laser protection system that currently protects expensive spirits in The Londoner’s bars. Doing so will create a single system that empowers the team to protect The Londoner’s most important assets. Sensing change

I

How is the camera market responding to automation?

n an effort to automate or augment mundane human-based tasks, such as monitoring CCTV, production lines, or driving vehicles, existing computer vision solutions are largely based on outdated camera systems. But are these the best tools for the job? Traditionally, cameras were the go-to for autonomous applications as they are widely available in the market place, offer high resolution

42 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

output, and, more importantly, are cheap and easy to use. They are also well-understood by humans because they generally work in visible light – the same range as the human eye. Additionally, they offer a level of variation, such as multispectral or hyperspectral modalities which can move beyond the normal frequencies of visible light into infrared and ultraviolet spectrums, which is an attractive prospect. However, they

are still fundamentally similar to how a human sees the world. For many use cases this is a good thing as the camera image is easily interpretable by human users and can also be used as evidence if misconduct was recorded in a monitored area. But in some ways this immediate similarity can be limiting when it is a machine that is the end user. By breaking this link to human-based perception, we open up

new possibilities for machine-based computer vision and perception systems. Getting a fresh perspective With cameras, which only produce a 2D image, depth, and the precise location of any detected object, must be estimated based on available context and knowledge of the environment within the field of view. In most practical applications, this would yield only imprecise estimates of locations, especially in crowded environments where many objects are only partially visible due to occlusions or obstructions. It can also lead to misclassification of people

or objects in posters on a wall or billboard, or even the side of a bus, which to a 2D sensor appear real. If more precise and reliable tracking is needed, multiple images from different perspectives, like stereo vision systems, can be combined. We have all experienced the capabilities of such technologies in the tracking of players and balls in sports games. Such solutions need very precise knowledge and control of individual sensor locations and time synchronisation between them. This is often impractical to achieve and can often offset the potential cost advantage of using cameras in the

first place. On the other hand, with 3D sensors, such as radar and LiDAR, depth can be measured directly providing much stronger context for perception applications. This direct measurement of distance is especially useful for the precise detection and tracking of humans, cars or other objects in complex or changing environments. Additionally, this high precision tracking can often be achieved with a more limited number of sensors, covering greater distances and with an inherent robustness to changing lighting, including full darkness, and adverse weather conditions

IN SECURITY | February 2022 | 43

which might render a camera-based solution inoperable. Removing the human element Another strong benefit of moving towards other sensor modalities is a reduction in Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This can allow the use of LiDAR sensors in situations where a camera could not be placed due to security or privacy concerns. For example, the image from a typical LiDAR cannot uniquely identify faces, or read sensitive documents, both of which limit the application of cameras. This is because, commonly, each tracked object detected by a LiDAR sensor reflects only a handful of points, whereas a camera image needs much higher resolution to reliably detect an object of interest. Due to the added information of distance in point clouds, these few points are still more than enough to precisely detect, classify and track various objects. 44 | February 2022 | IN SECURITY

An evolving technology The rapid evolution of 3D sensors over time, especially the increases in both resolution and frame rate, enable more advanced perception algorithms to be run. Not only is it now possible to detect and classify people and objects, but also to determine key characteristics, such as orientation, pose, pace and even, by inference, intent. This opens both new security application areas and previously difficult operating environments, greatly expanding the number of potential use cases. Separation of discrete objects in a crowded or partially obscured environment also becomes easier as sensor performance improves. The reduced dependence on human readable data also enables the application of efficient edge processing, reducing the need to move large volumes of raw data from sensors to the end user. Instead, the majority of processing can be performed at the edge, resulting in a significantly reduced data burden

since only the resulting object data needs to be transmitted to the output system. For a single sensor this is not perhaps so important, but in a large deployment over a wide area the savings could be game changing. There is no doubting that cameras will remain the primary solution for many security applications. In fact, with the increasing availability of cheap and reliable computer vision solutions embedded into more and more camera products, it is inevitable that both their use and range of applications will continue to grow. However, depending on the individual requirements of the application at hand, distance measuring sensor modalities, such as LiDAR, will either greatly enhance the capabilities of the security solution or replace cameras outright as, all aspects considered, a cheaper, easier to integrate and more reliable option.
