Hanover County continues to work on the Comprehensive Plan update (known as Envision Hanover) and is seeking feedback on concepts related to pedestrian/bicycle mobility, housing and rural character. The public is invited to attend one of the in-person events scheduled for April and early May:

Hanover County is working with residents, businesses, landowners and other community members to update its Comprehensive plan. Called “envision Hanover,” the plan is the county’s long-range vision of Hanover over the next 25 years, addressing land use, housing, economic development and natural resources. it also provides guidance on where growth may be appropriate throughout the county and what that growth should look like. Hanover residents’ feedback will shape the Comprehensive plan and decisions regarding growth, preservation and public investment for years to come. Based upon the feedback received, the project team has been working to identify key concepts related to land use, economic development and historic resources. These preliminary ideas will be introduced at a series of events scheduled in January and February. residents will be able to share their ideas by participating with an in-person meeting or webinar, depending upon their schedules. The Hanover Board of supervisors will hold public work sessions on the Comprehensive plan on May 10 and July 26. The current schedule calls for the planning Commission to hold a public hearing on the proposed update in august, with the board’s public hearing to take place a month later. The Hanover County sheriff’s Office will be hosting its 14th annual senior Citizens police academy. The senior Citizens police academy will take place april 11 to June 20. The academy will be held every Tuesday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at The Montpelier Community Center, located at 17203 sycamore Tavern lane, Montpelier, Va 23192. There will be no cost for the

participants. Class size will be limited to the first 30 seniors who register. The program will be available to people 55 years of age or older who are residents, business owners or county employees. applicants must also be willing to submit to a background check. College or not? As with so many things, it depends

When I was growing up, despite the mountains of advice, aphorisms, tips, tricks, instructions and allegories cheerfully dispensed by so many of the older and wiser people in my life, nobody ever bothered to mention one small but undeniably critical fact: By the time a person reaches the age and station in life where they feel qualified to offer advice to the next generation, a sizable chunk of what they’ve spent decades learning is already in danger of becoming

Take going to college, for example. When I was in high school (no, I’m not telling you when but let’s just assume it was long ago), the prevailing wisdom was that earning a college degree was almost always a valuable investment in a young person’s future. The idea was to go to the best school you could, work hard, impress the right people, and graduate into to a world waiting to offer you a good job and the keys to stable, happy life.

Did I mention this was a while ago?

In fact, by the time I graduated from college in 2001, the landscape had already shifted signifi-

cantly. It seemed by then, if you listened to those who claimed to know about such things, those of us who hadn’t majored in business or accounting or some other practical field were now doomed to failure, having just wasted wheelbarrow-loads of money on degrees that would look very nice on the wall but never be of any practical use.

Cut to two decades later, and the message is even more stark. Now, it isn’t hard to find those who claim that going to college at all is a waste of time, money and talent. Look at Steve Jobs, they say. Look at Mark Zuckerberg. Look at all the uber-successful people (including the co-

founder of Uber, by the way) who never graduated from college.

And perhaps they have a point: A college degree by itself is not the answer anymore. If you want to find incredible success in any field, you are going to have to work very, very hard. You are going to have to get a couple of lucky breaks. You are going to have to learn to accept failure. You are going to have to become an obsessive learner, a task that is made exponentially easier when you find something you are passionate about.

Can you do all of these things without a college degree? Sure. Plenty of people have.

So should you skip the

degree altogether? Well… it’s complicated.

Today’s young people have access to information and resources on a scale that many of us could never have fathomed several decades ago, and the path to a career in so many fields is no longer a straight line. The most critical thing—and I think Steve Jobs, Mark Cuban and pretty much any wildly successful person would agree with this—is to find your passion and pursue it relentlessly, even if it means going against the grain or taking a nontraditional path. I would never advise a young person to forgo college, but would advise them to understand that it isn’t a

guaranteed path—or the only path—to success.

Also, just in case you’re wondering, I have never regretted getting a college degree a single day in my life (even if my bank balance at present has a few less zeros than Zuckerberg’s). My time spent in college introduced me to the people who would change my life, and who would ignite in me a passion for learning that has proven even more valuable than the degree itself. Would I do it all over again? Yes. Should you take advice from me, or anyone else who hasn’t walked in your shoes?

Well kid, like everything else from this point on, that is totally up to you.

HCPS to host 46th Festival of Arts and Sciences

Hanover County Public Schools’ 46th Festival of the Arts and Sciences will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Patrick Henry High School, located at 12449 West Patrick Henry Road in Ashland. Admission is free.

More than 1,500 students will participate in

this community event that highlights their accomplishments during the school year and approximately 1,300 pieces of art will be on display. Additionally, a makerspace – a collaborative space for making, learning, exploring and sharing in which visitors will have the opportunity to work with snap circuits, build a miniwindmill, and build small robots – will be available in the commons.

RELOCATION OPPORTUNITY

VDOE for not adequately addressing complaints made against school districts by parents and others advocating for special needs students. It also indicated a deficient system of dealing with and responding to those complaints.

The latest correspondence summarizes OSEP’s position and outlines how the process will move forward.

“Finally, through review of the submitted documentation, continued contacts from Virginia parents and advocates, and other sources of information that have come to the attention of our office, we have significant new or continued areas of concerns with the State’s implementation of general supervision, dispute resolution, and confidentiality requirements of Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).”

The letter emphasizes the need for compliance with IDEA requirements.

“Appropriate policies and procedures for both oversight and compliance, and their implementation, are crucial to ensuring that children with disabilities

and their families are afforded their rights under IDEA and that a free appropriate public education (FAPE) is provided,” the letter continued.

The result is a further investigation by the Feds that will monitor progress and ensure VDOE is in compliance. What could be at stake is more than $300 million in funding from federal allocations for special education services if the problems are not addressed.

“For this reason, as is discussed below, we are notifying you of OSEP’s plan to initiate additional monitoring activities focused on both the new and continued areas of concern and on the effective implementation IDEA requirements in these areas.”

For parents of special needs or disabled children, the complaints and issues listed in the latest OSEP review are old news, and some have taken action. In Fairfax County, a group of parents filed a class action suit against the district regarding the lack of instruction and special services available for students with IEPs during the pandemic.

As a parent of a disabled child who graduated from public schools, I’m aware and have encountered

some of the issues raised in various complaints. When we encountered problems with Jack’s education, our issues were promptly discussed at the local level, and school officials were consistent in their attempts to hear our concerns. And sometimes, their best intentions were not enough to overcome confusion and lack of consistent policy at the state level.

It seemed that the issue with resolving special needs problems was a topdown situation where local school officers were more attentive to our problems than administrators from the Central Office. In our experience, it was difficult to obtain responses from policy level officials, and we found that we were sometimes expecting local school professionals to solve our problems in spite of administrative red tape.

Getting these processes right in a timely and responsible fashion is vital for the success of special education or disabled students, and ensuring a fair and responsive process to resolve issues is something that apparently, the VDOE has failed to do.

With renewed scrutiny and the real threat of lost funding, outstanding issues can be resolved.

ASHLAND – Ashland Train Day, the beloved street festival and railroad extravaganza, will return on April 29. This familyfriendly event, presented by Trackside Grill, invites everyone to explore historic Downtown Ashland. You will find freight and passenger trains, toucha-truck, model trains, railroad history, live music, kiddie rides, festival food, dance music and gift shopping.

The Clay Spring Garden Club of Ashland held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 11 in celebration of the beginning of Spring. The members were treated to a hands-on workshop on leaf manipulation conducted by Kathy Ward from Midlothian, an expert in the field of creative floral design.

There were two exhibit themes which enabled the members to demonstrate their creative floral design skills. The first theme, Two Sides to Every Story, called for a duo design which is an arrangement created in one container with two totally different sides, one in the

front and one in the back. Spring Fling was the second theme, which was a designer’s choice entry utilizing colorful spring flowers. The Best-in-Show award winners were Angela Wisler for Horticulture and Agnes Petrie for her Duo Design entry. Spring-themed refreshments, complete with a fruit salad served in a watermelon carved in the shape of a bunny, were enjoyed by all. The next meeting will be held on May 9 at the First Baptist Church in Ashland. A workshop will be held for members to create gift mug floral arrangements for Ashland businesses. Elaal named first team All-Metro after dominant senior season

Wrestling season may be over for 2022-23, but the Richmond TimesDispatch has finally released its highly-anticipated All-Metro teams that serve to recognize the top athletes in the area.

Multiple local athletes were included on the list, five to be exact as honorable mentions from Mechanicsville, Atlee and Patrick Henry, but atop the list was Mechanicsville senior Joe Elaal, who capped off a memorable high school wrestling career as the 215-pound Class 4 state runner-up and is now a first team All-Metro honoree.

Elaal concluded his wrestling career with the Mustangs by going 45-4 in his final run and was a single point from taking the state crown in a riveting matchup against Eastern View’s Brett Clatterbaugh in a 3-2 decision at Virginia Beach Sports Center on Feb. 18. It was the second matchup of the season between the two, with Clatterbaugh also winning the regional title over Elaal with the same 3-2 score.

The next chapter in Elaal’s wrestling career starts at Washington & Lee, where he’ll bring his pedigree and impressive resume over to the Generals.

Elaal was joined by three teammates on the All-Metro list, with 150-pound Kevin Bagby, 157-pound Drew Kozubal and 175-pound Jacob Koenig all featured as honorable mentions in their respective weight classes.

All three of those athletes joined Elaal at the state championships and placed fourth in their own brackets, while Bagby and Koenig ended their seasons with regional titles under their belts after dominating their way to the finals at Powhatan High School. Kozubal’s 41-6 record on the season only rivaled Elaal’s record, with three of those wins coming under the

bright lights of the state championships.

In a season full of memorable highs, one of the best for the Mustangs group was their senior night performances in a Hanover-hosted quad meet with Atlee and Patrick Henry. Celebrating with their families and wrestling familiar foes they’d later meet in the regional tournament, both Elaal and Kozubal achieved their 100th career victories on the mats on a day that celebrated their achievements in their time with the program.

Other Capital District wrestlers featured on the All-Metro team include Atlee’s Eric Ludwig,

who placed third in states in the 113-pound bracket and won his regional title at Powhatan, as well as Patrick Henry’s Ryan O’Keefe, who finished with a 44-8 record on the season and qualified for states in the 106-pound class after winning a region title.

The All-Metro list also mentioned and honored the girls wrestlers that placed at the first girls state meet this year, two of which were Patrick Henry wrestlers Jordan and Sara Forsyth, who placed second and third in the 100-pound class.

Patriots hang on to topple Mustangs at home

With the Mechanicsville Mustangs looking to add to a threegame winning streak and the Patrick Henry Patriots looking to climb to .500 after dropping their first two games of the season, a lot was on the line in the first matchup of the year between the Capital District foes.

The Mustangs entered the matchup having outscored their last three opponents 51-7, emerging as a fiery o ensive team that punishes would-be attacking threats once they reached midfield. Against the Patriots though, that energy was matched in a fast-paced, physical game that ended with a much-needed 13-10

victory for the Patriots that put them to 3-3 on the season.

Led by four-goal performances from Evan Williams and Shane Lawson, the Patriots jumped out to a 8-6 lead at halftime and responded to a scoreless third quarter to run o five in the fourth quarter to hold o the Mustangs. Lawson was the face leading the charge in the fourth, scoring three goals in the final 8:30 to keep his team ahead.

Senior Cameron Dabney started o hot in the first half, scoring the opening two goals to put the Patriots ahead 2-0 in the first 90 seconds. The Mustangs responded with two of their own from junior James Doss and senior Joe Foley to tie the game up,

though the Patriots led 4-3 entering the second quarter.

The second quarter went similarly, with Williams scoring three of his four goals in the 12-minute frame while Lawson added the fourth goal to help the Patriots take a 8-6 lead into halftime. The Mustangs continued responding to keep things close in that second quarter, with Doss, Foley and junior Jonah Volles scoring three goals in 90 seconds to tie the game 6-6 before Williams added two response goals just before halftime.

Foley’s goal drew a big response from the crowd, with the senior attacker intercepting a bad pass and driving home a goal that leveled the score at 6-all.

The Mustangs took control of the third quarter with lockdown defense that shut down the few opportunities the Patriots created while controlling possession on the other side of the field for much of the 12 minutes. The Mustangs tied the game for the third time o goals from Volles and senior Ryan Magill, with Volles scoring in the first minute right after the team received an advantage from a Patriots penalty. Magill tied the game with 1:17 o a nice find from junior Aiden Fitzpatrick.

In the fourth quarter, the Patriots once again took control with two quick goals from Greg Foster in the first three minutes. His second was an impressive finish

where he recovered quickly after losing his balance from a check and delivering a low blast into the back of the net.

A goal a minute later from Lawson forced a Mustangs timeout, but the momentum was fully in Patrick Henry’s favor. The lead grew to 12-8 after Lawson fired one from long range, and though a goal from Doss and Chase Hudes gave the Mustangs some temporary life, Lawson added one more late to lock up the road victory for the Patriots.

The Mustangs can get back on track when they take on Hanover on the road on Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. The Patriots will take on Monticello at home on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
