Rethinking mental illness A quarter of Kiwis have poor mental wellbeing. If you’re a member of the LGBTQIA community, Māori or a young adult, your likelihood of experiencing mental distress is much higher. Mental illness is common, yet we are alarmingly unaccepting of it. A wellbeing survey carried out by Statistics NZ revealed New Zealanders felt more comfortable having a neighbour with a different ethnicity to themselves (89%) than they did about having a neighbour with mental There’sillness. no doubt we have a long way to go when it comes to turning our mental health statistics around - a cause Sir John Kirwan has dedicated himself to. In this issue we catch up with the All Black hero and mental health advocate after his landmark Mitey Drive and learn how he’s equipping children with the tools they need to care for their own mental wellbeing (page 14). Doing things you enjoy is a great way to take care of your mental health, and who doesn’t love a wine tour? Head off the beaten track and into the heart of Hawke’s Bay wineries on page 32. For foodies, there’s plenty of inspiration with our Odd pairings that bring together unlikely food and drink combinations. They’re so good, you’ll wonder why you never thought of them before! And for Halloween, there’s plenty of spooky activities the kids will love on page 56. Warmest, ABBY | EDITOR

The community of Tūrangi also has its fair share, with another government-funded revitalisation project aimed at improving the town’s streetscapes as well as updating and adding more kerbing and channelling. All of this enhances our beautiful environment and complements the natural beauty that our locals and visitors alike love so much.

Two years ago I wrote we had just received $20.6 million of government shovel-ready funding which was allocated to a CBD upgrade in Taupō; a multi-year project, which will not only create a vibrant town centre and world-class waterfront but has also provided many new jobs across our district. We are starting to see the fruit of this endeavour with our former main street, Tongariro Street, now taking on a new pedestrian-friendly feel, and work due to start on a very exciting revamp of a section of Lake Terrace.

Our local business community are excited about these projects drawing more people to their doors. We pride ourselves on being a hub for events and are excited to stay on top of being a destination district. This is a great place to live work and play, and we invite everyone to come and support our local businesses during and after these works are completed, which will be all done and dusted by early 2023.

Moving Rotorua forward Kia ora koutou, We’re nearing the end of my last term as Rotorua’s Mayor and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported and worked with us towards better outcomes for our people and our district. A lot has been achieved in the last nine years. We have stayed the course set through our 2030 Vision and partnerships have been central to that. I’m proud of what’s been achieved, of the transformation we are seeing through place-shaping projects like the lakefront and forest developments and of progress being made on infrastructure investment and projects like the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. We’re achieving better outcomes for whānau and tamariki through joint projects like our Te Aka Mauri library and child health hub, Child Equity Programme and work with local groups in our neighbourhoods. Our Te Arawa partnership has opened many doors and we are working in collaboration with iwi on many projects that will benefit the district as a whole. Covid-19 has of course added further complexity to our challenges but progress continues to be made regardless and there’s much more underway and still to be done. Ultimately, everything we do is all about people. Transformational change requires bold leadership and I believe what we’ve set in place provides a solid pathway for the next council to deliver positive outcomes for our people. The opportunities and potential are limitless – all we need to do is keep moving forward, tatau tatau, together, because together we really can, and do, make a difference. Kia kaha, Steve Chadwick MAYOR, ROTORUA

Rewind, connect and reset in Whakatāne Kia ora koutou, I don’t know about you, but I’m hanging out for spring, and the swelling buds of freesia are a sure sign that we’ve almost made it through what has been a very challenging winter.

What better time to think about the summer holidays, a time to reconnect with loved ones, recharge and plan for the year head. I personally recommend Whakatāne as the perfect place to rewind, connect and reset.

While the beauty of the sweeping bay and safe patrolled beach hasn’t changed, you’re likely to find an increased variety of great food choices sea and harbour side and over the hill in Whakatāne. Ōhope and Whakatāne also retain a charming selection of boutique shopping options – ideal for browsing when you have that extra time on your hands. Add in our rich cultural heritage, spectacular and diverse scenery and you have a wining combination to recharge mind, body and soul. See you soon. Kia kaha, Judy Turner MAYOR, WHAKATĀNE DISTRICT

14 Sir John questKirwan’s

Sir John admits he doesn’t have all the answers, but he refuses to accept the current situation when it comes to our mental health. Through his Foundation’s work, he wants to get Mitey into every school in New Zealand and to turn our mental health statistics around within a “Anddecade.my personal goal is to grow as a person, and put my mental health first, to be a great dad and a great “Ihusband.”seemyself as really really normalblissfully average.”

The money will be used to expand the Mitey initiative that teaches primary school children about protecting their emotional wellbeing. NZ’s health crisis Disturbingly, we have one of the worst mental health statistics in the OECD, including a particularly high youth suicide rate. In a recent survey commissioned by Sir John, 60% of people said the country simply isn't doing enough to improve the mental wellbeing of children.

Young people are suffering, and we need to turn things around, says Sir John. “Our goal is we want to go from one of the worst mental health stats in the developed world to one of the best. A lot of the services are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. How do we put a fence at the top of the cliff and then how do we move that fence back?”

A fresh approach Sir John wants mental health education to start early so our children have the skills and tools needed to tackle the emotional challenges of modern life. That’s where Mitey comes in. Mitey was developed over two years by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, with input from specialists at the University of Auckland. The programme is taught as part of the curriculum, enabling children to learn about resilience and mental health at school every day, just like literacy and “Researchmaths.shows us that if we can teach the ‘ABC of mental health’, consistently, to children when they’re young – they will understand how to manage life’s ups and downs, and they’ll have better empathy for others who may be having a tough time.”

15

“I think mental health is the biggest issue moving forward for the medical system, for the future of our kids.”

Looking after his own mental health

When we speak, Sir John has just returned home after completing his landmark Mitey Drive around the country. The two-week, 2100km journey raised awareness and $970,000 for an issue he cares deeply about - youth mental health

It’s also important to him that Mitey is introduced into the curriculum without burdening schools. “We can’t put any extra pressure on schools from a financial or a human resource point of view so what we do is we pay for the coaches who go in and upskill the Currentlyteachers.”provided to children in Years 1-8 at 70 primary and intermediate schools, the money raised by the Mitey Drive will be used to expand the programme, to 40 new schools across New Zealand, benefitting 11,000 kids.

Sir John’s personal struggles with anxiety and depression have been well documented. Since making the decision to speak publicly, he has become the face of mental health and helped shift the stigma associated with it. In 2012 he was knighted for his work in the sector. While he’s happy, healthy and thriving today, looking after his own mental health remains a top priority. To help, he uses the app Groov (which Sir John co-founded) that provides users with tools and strategies to support their emotional wellbeing. “I have a daily mental health plan and I put my mental health first. I follow the six pillars (of mental wellbeing) every day”.

Reading, cooking, enjoying a coffee and putting down his phone are all things Sir John does on a daily basis, which make a huge difference to his emotional wellbeing. “Blissfully average”

Sir John Kirwan is a man on a mission. The All Blacks legend and mental health advocate is passionately and quite literally driving for change to our alarming mental health statistics.

There is something magical about taking a rough lump of clay, working it with your hands, and turning it into a beautiful, functional object. Whether it is the connection to the earth, the calming movements of the pottery wheel, or the satisfaction of creation, pottery’s appeal spans all generations. That’s exactly what Taupō’s Quirky Pottery Studio has found – with people of all ages and abilities enjoying learning pottery skills in their workshops. Didi Chapman is the award-winning potter and ceramic artist behind the studio and has been working with clay for almost a decade. Chapman believes many of her students are attracted to pottery because of the satisfying results.

“There are physical and mental benefits from expressing yourself by creating pottery. I believe that there is enormous satisfaction in working with your hands and creating sense. Quirky Pottery worked with Embra founders Phill and Nora Blackburne to create original crockery that would amplify their guests’ experience. Guests at Embra can enjoy a 3 or 5 course meal in a relaxed, intimate setting, showcasing outstanding NZ produce prepared using French and British techniques. The handmade plates provide the perfect backdrop for food as beautiful as art itself. Embra say they love using their ceramic tableware as it keeps its temperature during service, meaning food stays hot when plated. Durability is also a factor, and their crockery can handle many runs through their heavy-duty Chapmandishwashers.loves when local businesses choose to make a statement by using handmade pottery such as hers. The evolution of manners

18

As our lifestyles have changed, so too manners. The digital age has had a significant impact on the rules of etiquette, as we continue to negotiate what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Yet manners in some form, have remained part of society for generations, as they offer us a kind of framework for understanding social expectations. Ultimately, good manners simply make life more enjoyable for us and those around us. What do the experts say? Ask any etiquette expert (yes, they exist) whether manners are still relevant and the answer is a resounding yes. Teaching children good manners goes far beyond politeness - it shows respect and consideration of others, teaches kindness, humbleness and courtesy and gives children confidence. We all want to raise a child who exhibits these traits but in the hustle and bustle of family life, it can be hard to find the time to teach manners, or to know where to begin.

Are good manners a thing of the past?

 Abby Beswick

There’s no doubt manners have changed over time. Traditional manners such as holding a door open for a woman, keeping your elbows off the table and letting elders go first, may seem outdated for many people.

Afriend of mine recently organised a birthday party. Eight couples were invited and all but one replied saying they could make it (we were away so unfortunately couldn’t go). They bought food and drinks, cleaned the house, put up decorations and she bought a new dress for the occasion. The night arrived and the texts started rolling in: someone had double booked so couldn’t make it, another felt unwell, someone’s babysitter had cancelled, one couple texted to say they had decided to do something else, and others didn’t even text at all. In the end one couple turned up. Never again, my devastated friend told me. Sound familiar? Sadly, most of us have had the unpleasant experience of being on the receiving end of bad manners. Whether it’s that friend who always cancels at the last minute, people who pull out their phone in the middle of a conversation, parents who show up to a playdate with a sick child or a lack of table manners in our own household: we can all relate to the irritation of poor etiquette. So what has happened to our manners, and do good manners matter?

fundamentalsWorkshopssituations.”coveretiquettesuchas, how to introduce yourself, how to borrow something, how to engage with a new mother and baby, table manners, and birthday party etiquette. The school has a sitdown meal together each day, where table manners are also important, such as using utensils correctly, thanking the people who have cooked the meal and those doing the clean-up.

At Hasting’s Lindisfarne College, manners play a central role in the school’s values and culture. While not formally taught, good manners are role-modelled and spoken about regularly at chapel and assemblies so students understand the expectations around how they should behave and treat others, says deputy rector, Campbell Howlett. Manners remain an important focus as they are actions that represent the college’s values of courage, humility, respect, integrity, service and kindness, says Howlett. “Manners are integral in being a good man as they set the foundation for positive relationships with other people. Manners are simple things that we can do that make a huge difference to others and show that we value other Therepeople.”arearange of manners expected from students including, standing up when an adult walks into the room, opening doors for others and allowing adults through first, and waiting for an adult to finish their conversation before asking a question rather than interrupting.

Etiquette around the use of technology remains a constant challenge, admits Howlett.

Shaun started The Etiquette Academy of New Zealand a year ago for exactly this reason. Their aim is to help children discover their value and release their potential, according to their Facebook page. ‘We believe that impeccable manners and etiquette is key to building confidence and helping each child become the best version of themselves.’ Based in Christchurch, the Academy offers online and in-person workshops that help young people discover who they are and engage with others, says Margaret van Wezel. “It’s not a set of rules, it’s more social and communication skills we use to connect with people in different

Why manners matter While manners were largely defined by class and gender in previous generations, today good manners are more about how we connect with others, says van Wezel. And therefore, they remain “very important”. “Making someone feel loved and respected and comfortable in your presence allows them to be Whilethemselves.”somemight lament a loss of manners in modern society,

Manners were always important growing up, and this is something Olsen wants to instil in her own family. “My dad always said ‘manners maketh the man’. I always treat people how I want to be treatedthat’s a very important rule to live Asby.”a teacher, Olsen expects good manners from her students and tries to remind them why they’re essential life skills. “With good manners it’s about respecting yourself and others and by doing that you attract people to you.”

van Wezel sees it differently. Manners haven’t got lost, they’ve simply evolved, she says. “Our social settings have changed and the mediums we use to interact have changed.” Most significantly, technology is evolving at such a rapid pace, the etiquette around it is still a work in progress. Ultimately, we all want the same thing - to connect meaningfully with others.

Theshoot.experience has had a hugely positive impact on her daughter, says Olsen. “Bella loved it. I think she felt like she was important. It was her confidence I noticed, and at the table.”

The Hamilton family emigrated to New Zealand from South Africa three years ago and Olsen noticed Bella, 10, was finding it difficult to settle into her new life. When she heard about the Etiquette Academy she thought it could be a great way to boost Bella’s confidence while brushing up on her manners. Bella had private lessons with Margaret over several weeks, which covered: table manners, greeting people, making friends, positive body language, party etiquette and being a good sport.

By activating the skin’s own natural wound healing response, the treatment stimulates new collagen production and distribution. This plumps up and tightens the skin, making enlarged pores appear smaller. Fine lines & wrinkles We all know that as we age, we accrue fine lines and wrinkles, especially across the face. Dermapen treatments are the safe, natural alternative to fight the ageing process. Treatment can begin at the onset, or before fine lines take hold, requiring two-tothree clinical treatments to achieve a noticeable difference.

Acne & problematic skin Acne can affect all skin types and ages, and can arise from a combination of genetics, hormone changes, health, stress, or environmental factors. Hormones can stimulate excess sebum production, meaning excess oil, dry skin, and debris can become trapped in the pore. If the pore becomes blocked, the acne bacteria can cause inflammation and make the skin

3. Indented scars are the most common scar type and often found on the face where acne has been present. They arise when not enough scar tissue has formed. Dermapen’s dedicated scar treatment function can assist in the treatment of most types of scarring all over the body. Rejuvenating fractional micro-channels form in the skin that actively break up existing scar tissue. New collagen works to build healthier, thicker, and firmer skin in the scarred region. You will notice a smoother and more even skin tone and texture.

Pigmentation Hyperpigmentation is the discolouration of skin caused by several factors, including hormonal changes, sun exposure, skin type, trauma, and the skin’s natural ageing process. Excess melanin in the skin causes pigmentation, presenting as uneven skin tone, dark patches, age spots or freckles. Highly effective Dermapen treatments deliver up to 1,920 fractional microchannels per second into the skin to promote balanced and normalised cellular function. Directly targeting melanocytes (pigment producing cells), a repair and corrective process encourages even skin tone, creating a radiant appearance. Ready to start rejuvenating your skin?

Erase your concerns and reveal your most radiant, healthy complexion ever. Dermapen treatments even help your skin to absorb skincare products more effectively, a double bonus.

2. Raised scars commonly occur on bendable areas of the skin (back, knees and elbows), and result from the stretching of wound edges while healing. Keloid scars can grow, and become large, painful, or itchy.

struggled to fill roles in her Tauranga business, Tuskany. The full service advertising, brand and marketing agency has been hit hard by Covid-19 and immigration restrictions, which have left a very tight labour market.

Unemployment has held steady at a record low for the second quarter of the year, causing ongoing challenges for businesses around the country. Statistics NZ data shows the official unemployment rate was 3.3%, equating to 96,000 people, in the three months to June.

The combination of low unemployment, Covid-19 and rising inflation have had a huge impact on businesses, says SME Business Network spokesperson, Tenby Powell. He is advocating for a change in immigration settings that will make it easier for migrant workers to come to New Zealand, so businesses can get the staff they need, and drive the economy. The current system “is just not working”, he says.

“It’s an absolute expectation,” says Cooke. As a creative agency, Tuskany can offer this to staff, but too much time working from home can have an impact on team culture.

detrimental effect on the economy.

Low unemployment allows everyone to get a job who wants one. Yet it also means skills shortages, a competitive labour market and businesses struggling to get the staff they need to remain open, highlighting the need for immigration workers.

Powell. Without a policy change, businesses and the economy will continue to suffer.

Talent shortage impacting Tauranga business

“I think it will be a vacuum later this year and early next year as they all jump on the opportunity and actually travel because they can.” Attracting and retaining talent in New Zealand will be a “real concern moving forward”, says Cooke.

“It is harder to find the talent we’re looking for,” says Cooke. “For several months we were looking for key staff and it was proving really Closedchallenging.”borders have prevented new workers from entering New Zealand and fewer Kiwis are moving to other regions, leaving a skill shortage and a smaller, more competitive labour market. There are simply fewer job candidates who have relevant skills. And those who do apply are looking for more than an attractive salary. Employees also want roles that will give them good work-life balance, so flexibility is a key component of roles.

The shallow pool of workers has led to a skills shortage, increased competition for staff, and an active poaching environment. On top of this, a mass exodus of young kiwis leaving our shores on their OE - many of whom have been waiting since the start of the pandemic - is expected over the next couple of years, leaving a further labour void. “They’re leaving for higher wages and probably better conditions and they’re taking with them a skill set that’s going to be invaluable to an employer overseas and one that we’re really going to miss here,” says Powell.

New Zealand is a great place to live and work, and we need to encourage good people to come here, says

It’s counterintuitive on every level.”

Ask any business about the challenges they’re facing and you’re likely to hear the same story: critical staff shortages are leaving them stretched thin.

Low unemployment is being felt in all industries, leaving businesses “screaming for staff”, says Powell. Without enough seasonal workers, fruit has been left to rot on the ground. Cafes and restaurants have been forced to reduce their opening hours and in some cases, have closed due to a lack of staff. Everywhere you go businesses are being impacted by an acute shortage of workers, he says. “It’s just crazy to consider that we now need to isolate New Zealand in a way which is having a

On the back of Covid-19 and closed borders, the number of migrant arrivals from overseas, including Kiwis returning home are low. In the year to May 2022, migrant arrivals were down 17% compared to the previous year, with an annual net migration loss of 10,700.

itself may have passed, any day is a good day to start being kinder to those around you. Kindness can help reduce stress and improve emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, and our own happiness. Helping others feel good creates a sense of belonging and reduces isolation –something we all need after the last few years. What’s RAK Day all about? The day was started after one of the co-founders, Josh de Jong, was stuck in Auckland traffic watching some angry drivers ahead of him get into a quarrel. He began to wonder what things could be like if on one day, every person in Aotearoa was kind to each other instead. Enlisting the help of his friends Megan Singleton, Marshall Gray and Rueben Gwyn, they set out to contact every politician, school, media outlet, church, and business they could to spread the word. The idea was simple: encourage people to do a random act of kindness all on the same day, to lift the “kindness temperature” in our country. Since then, the day has grown as people embrace the idea of paying it forward. What is a Random Act of Kindness? A random act of kindness (or RAK) is all about surprising someone with something kind. 5 Mile Gin

Picture this: it’s a hot, summery day, you’re relaxing by beautiful Lake Taupō with loved ones around, and you’ve got a delicious gin and tonic in hand. What could be better? Well, that gin could be the new locally distilled 5 Mile Gin, fresh from Taupō’s first ever commercial distillery. Named after popular swimming spot, 5 Mile Bay, this new gin is making waves among locals and gin fans.

Taupō’s first and one of the country’s newest distilleries and named after Taupō’s beautiful 5 Mile Bay.

Taupō Distilling Co’s small-batch gin is made with a flavourful selection of botanicals, including juniper, coriander seeds, cassia bark, lime peel, green peppercorns, and even walnuts. After careful distillation to bring out the flavour of these botanicals, the gin is blended with pure Tongariro water from Mt Ruapehu. The gin represents the first spirit to be released by the new distillery, with more rumoured to be on the way.

5 Mile Gin’s recipe itself was a labour of love on the part of the founder Scott Forsythe, who spent months over the Covid-19 lockdowns perfecting it. Feeling inspired by his many afternoons by the lake drinking gin and tonics with friends and family, he set out to create a balanced, flavourful spirit. The first step was purchasing a 50L still and distilling many batches at home, before finally settling on recipe version 19. The new distillery was licenced in April 2022, and not long after, 5 Mile Gin was awarded Best Overall London Dry Gin at the 2022 NZ Spirits ThoseAwards.in the know might recognise Forsythe as the co-owner of specialty café Baked With Love, along with his wife Kim. Frontline workers for eating disorder services have welcomed extra Government funding but say it is unlikely to have a significant impact amid concerns of soaring demand and unmet need.

In the Budget 2022 the Government allocated an extra $3.9 million over four years to services supporting patients battling eating disorders.

The level of need is leaving providers stretched and families suffering, says New Zealand Eating Disorders

The extra funding will also be used to upskill staff and improve recruitment, says Verrall.

While the additional funding is a step forward, experts warn it’s simply not enough. Demand and wait times for eating disorder services continue to swell, exacerbated by lockdowns during the pandemic.

Clinic (NZEDC) co-director Kellie Lavender. “It’s horrible. I often talk to families who have been turned away from services because they’re not bad enough or they’re too complex,” and that’s just not OK.”

The money will be used to give more patients access to public treatment, says Associate Minister of Health Dr Ayesha Verrall. “This will help increase the capacity of eating disorder services and reinforces our continued focus and commitment to improve mental health and addictions support in Aotearoa.”

Extra funding is a good start but the sector also needs streamlined collaboration between public and private services to improve patient care, says Lavender. She says there should also be greater focus on developing and supporting a specialist workforce. Along with advocacy groups in the sector, Lavender is calling for an external review of the treatment model, which simply isn’t working. “Just giving more money to a system that maybe isn’t being effective runs the risk of wasting those funds,” she says. “If we all got together on this we could improve services for families and people suffering from eating disorders.”

NZEDC is a private outpatient specialist service with centres in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington. Staff treat patients who have a variety of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Patients are referred through their GP, a specialist or self refer.

Pre Covid-19 the service received about 20 referrals a month and there was a wait time of 2-4 weeks. By August 2020, there were 120 people on their waiting list and patients currently wait up to 16 weeks for Allassessment.eatingdisorders are treatable and recovery is possible at any age, but this relies on patients receiving high quality, personalised care as soon as possible, says Lavender. While on the waitlist, some patients become more unwell and by the time they enter treatment they are at crisis level.

The extra funding is in addition to the $15.5 million spent each year.

requirementsinsulationNew - what you need to know  Abby Beswick

Tougher new insulation standards have been introduced for new builds and consented renovations, in a bid to cut the energy needed for heating homes. The new standards will make homes warmer, drier and more efficient. Under the changes, roofs, walls, floors and windows must adhere to new requirements, which are intended to bring long-term benefits through increased housing quality, while also contributing to our climate change response.

Floors There are different R values required for underfloor insulation across the country, with the minimum levels increasing from R1.3 to up to R1.7 for slab-on-ground floors and R3.0 for timber sub floors.

Roofs One of the easiest ways to keep your home warm is to increase roof insulation. All insulation types are measured in an ‘R’ value, which stands for thermal resistance. The new R-value of roof insulation has increased to a minimum value of R6.6 across all 6 climate zones.

New Construction Taupo, Matt Newell explains what the changes are and how they could affect you. What are the new insulation levels? Under the changes, six climate zones have been introduced to reflect the weather in different parts of the country, starting with zone 1 in Northland, down to zone 6 in Southland/Otago. This means new homes will be designed to meet the level of the zone they’re built in. The changes for insulation are:

Walls There is almost no change to the existing R2.0 requirement. Windows These are the largest source of heat loss in your home, so levels of insulation have been increased throughout the country, to recognise different needs in colder climate zones. Changes to these levels are being made in steps to allow window and glass manufacturers time to increase production of higher performing windows. All parts of the country are then required to have an R-value of at least R0.46 by the end of 2023. What do the changes mean for new and existing homes? The changes affect new builds

If you’re building a home, they work alongside architects and draftsmen who use software to determine your insulation requirements as part of the design process.

Mammoth.co.nzSource: 41 and renovations. The insulation requirements for existing homes remain unchanged. When will the changes take effect? The building sector is currently in a transition period. New window insulation requirements in the warmest climate zones will see a two-step approach with an interim increase, followed by a mandatory increase. By the end of 2023, all parts of the country will have a similar minimum level of window requirements. New wall, floor and roof insulation levels will be mandatory by May next year. How New Construction makes the process easy for clients

If you’re renovating your home, Newell will assess its insulation levels to determine what needs to be done to make it compliant. The R-value or your current insulation should be visible on or near where it has been installed. “Once renovations are complete, we can provide written confirmation of your insulation levels”, says Newell. Benefits “The more insulation homes have, the better as this will keep it warmer, drier and healthier by increasing the energy efficiency of the home”. The changes will also provide long term savings for homeowners. “When considering insulation, it’s always good to look at the whole house and work with your builder to ensure you have good insulation throughout and good ventilation to extract moisture out”.

Choose a frame and planters You can buy ready-made vertical garden kits and frames from your local garden centre. These come in different sizes and shapes to suit your space and design. If you’re feeling creative, you can

make your own using timber, trellis or recycled wooden pallets. You can then add pots, baskets or planter boxes. What to grow The options for vertical gardens are endless! Here is some inspiration when deciding what to grow: Edible garden – make your vertical garden edible by planting herbs and vegetables. Not only will your garden provide delicious additions to your cooking, it will also smell divine. Try some of the following: parsley, coriander, basil, lettuce, rosemary, mint, beans, and radishes. Tropical wall – Consider growing tropical plants for a lush, exotic vibe. Options include, sword fern, devil’s ivy, zebra plant and swiss cheese plant. Succulent wall – For a lower maintenance vertical garden, choose succulents, which are extremely hardy and come in all shapes and sizes. Try echeveria, crassula, portulaca and string of pearls. Flower wall – For a colourful, vibrant wall choose annuals such as pansies, violas, petunias, geraniums and begonias. Pot and hang your plants This is the fun bit - creating your garden. Make sure you use a good quality potting mix and pack your plants in nice and snug before hanging them. Successful vertical gardens depend on effective watering as they can dry out quickly. If an irrigation system isn’t included in your design, you’ll need to hand water your wall regularly. And don’t forget to use plant food to promote healthy growth and keep your vertical garden looking its best. Forget boring horizontal gardens - it’s time to get vertical. Also known as living gardens or green walls, vertical gardens are a fashionable trend in the gardening world. High on the facades of hotels and commercial buildings, within restaurants and cafes, and inside peoples homes: this arty foliage breathes colour and life into spaces. While large living walls create a dramatic backdrop, they also work extremely well in small areas by utilising space. So if you want to transform a wall in your garden or home into a verdant attraction, we can help. Here are some tips on how to create your very own vertical garden. Assess your space

Look at the location where you want to grow your vertical garden and see how much sun it receives throughout the day. Does it get full sun all day or is it in total shade? Few plants grow well in extremes like this. Gentle shade and sun is ideal as this will give you plenty of plant choices.

Skyline Rotorua cuts ribbon on three new thrilling Luge tracks

Skyline Rotorua’s general manager, Andrew Jensen says the new tracks are longer, smoother, and safer than ever before, while the new tunnel lighting is a genuine Luge world-first.

50  Advertorial

Connecting to the past and present The project has been in the pipeline for more than four years, with construction taking about 14 months to complete. Skyline made a conscious decision to support and use local contractors for the development, including a strong involvement with Ngāti Whakaue. After the new tracks were blessed, the luge has even been gifted a new te reo kupu (word): Rūhā. This stems from Rū, meaning the rumbling earth, as it feels when you are riding the luge, and Hā, the breath of life that you enjoy when you are on the luge. Skyline took a sustainable approach to the entire project, with 12,000 native trees planted onsite and four water retention ponds created. Old Luge carts were shredded and recycled into track curbing, Exciting news for thrill seekers this spring: you’ll be spoilt for choice with the opening of three new Luge tracks at Skyline Rotorua. This longstanding Kiwi attraction now boasts five Luge tracks to choose from, just in time for the beginning of longer days. Twists, turns and a world first The new tracks offer multiple thrilling corkscrew turns, unbeatable panoramic views of the city and four newly-lit tunnels — perfect for night Luging. With a total 7.3km of twisting tracks to ride, and new and different options suitable for all skill levels, there’s plenty of fun to be had for first timers and returning Lugers alike.

“It is 100 percent gravity fuelled fun — there is nothing else like this. Skyline is continually evolving the Luge model and track designs, and our latest design is truly state-of-the-art. This track investment reflects Skyline’s confidence in tourism, Rotorua, and the fun of Luge — plus the industry’s ability to bounce back.”

“There is no doubt that domestic tourism has kept us going — mentally and physically — through this tough time. In turn, we’re focused on bringing them new innovations and keeping our tracks fresh, so they’ll keep coming back to see us.

“Having said that, we’re super excited to welcome back our international manuhiri (guests) and I know we’re not the only ones eagerly anticipating their return.”

old concrete from the tracks was crushed and used on site and no soil was removed from the property. The considerable investment, along with using local contractors, empowers the project to benefit both the community and tourism industry.

Despite the challenges of the past two years, the potential of tourism has never looked stronger — in Rotorua and nationally. As the home of the original luge, Skyline Rotorua is an iconic tourist attraction for the city, bringing in more than 8 million visitors since it opened in 1985. More than 25 million luge rides have been undertaken in that time, ensuring the attraction has become part of Kiwi culture and a must-do activity for international manuhiri. Skyline Rotorua is loved by millions of people around the world, with Skyline now hosting Luge operations in Canada, Singapore, and South Korea, with other tracks on the way.

If you haven’t been to visit yet – or recently – the opening of the new tracks is a great opportunity to bring whanau and friends together for a day (or night!) of fun, thrills, and great views.

Paving the way for the return of tourism Jensen says the past couple of years have been challenging for tourism operators across Aotearoa and they’ve appreciated the unwavering support from locals.

Whisky & Oysters We Kiwis might be well-used to a glass of sauvignon or chardonnay with our Bluffies, but over in Scotland the nouveau pairing of choice with bivalves is a smoke-driven Scotch whisky. Opt for a peaty, maritime-

Sherry & Sushi

While the well-known drink of choice with sushi is sake – what grows together, goes together after all –sherry offers an intriguing alternative. Having made a comeback in the wine and cocktail worlds in recent years, the many styles of this Spanish fortified wine make it a versatile food partner. For sushi and sashimi, choose a light, dry variety, like Fino or Manzanilla.

Why it works: Whether you’re springing for an authentic French bubbly, or a crisp New Zealand méthode, the zesty spritz of a brut cuvee helps cut through the rich, decadent, sauce. Bubbles and acidity refresh the palate between bites, while the salt and fat in this dish amplify the body and fruitiness of the wine, making it appear more flavourful. It’s a match made in heaven – or maybe an upmarket diner. flavoured Islay or Island whisky such as Laphroaig or Talisker.

Why it works: The salinity of the seafood brings out the fruitiness in the whisky, while the smoke will complement the delicate flavour of the oyster.

Champagne’s delicious chemistry with fatty, carb-loaded food is well documented: like Champagne and French fries, or fried chicken (allegedly The Foo Fighters’ favourite post-gig meal). But this combination seamlessly blends the sophistication of sparkling wine with the gluttony of the ultimate creamy, cheesy comfort food: mac ‘n’ cheese.

Why it works: As an umami-rich wine, sherry provides a strong backbone of flavour. The acidity breaks through fatty salmon and brings out the sweetness in the raw fish. Nutty, citrusy flavours in the wine are a delicious match with seafood and sushi.

Why it works: Kombucha is naturally acidic, which provides a necessary lift to the richness of the pizza. The fermentation process creates CO2, leaving kombucha naturally sparkling, also helping to refresh the palate.

Kombucha & Pizza Another carb-rich, cheese-laden comfort food, pizza is often eaten with beer or wine to cut through the grease. But for those being more mindful with their drinking, you don’t have to resort to soft drinks with your slice. Kombucha offers a flavourful, low-sugar alternative, and there are a wide variety of flavour options on the market. We like the Original kombucha from Daily Organics for its rich, almost cidery flavour and subtle acidity.

Why it works: The lighter body and earthy, red fruit flavour of this region’s pinot noir pair perfectly with the beef patties in the big mac, while the briny pickles bring out the body and fruitiness in the wine.

Step 2: Stir the olive oil, salt, cheese, herbs, and 375g flour into the yeast mixture.

Step 5: Place in an oiled bowl, turning to cover. Cover bowl with a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place to rise for 1 hour.

Step 11: Place these in the centre between the head and body to make eight legs.

Step 4: Knead dough for 10 mins until smooth and elastic.

Step 3: Gradually add the other 375g of flour and form into a dough ball.

always something exciting to do at this time of year.

How to… Step 1: Peel the backing from a piece of contact paper, cut into your desired shape and place down onto a surface sticky-side up, secured with double-sided tape. You can do this straight onto the window. Step 2: Cut up some small pieces of tissue paper in various colours. To create your design, start sticking them onto the contact paper. Step 3: Once the design is filled, place a second sheet of contact paper down over the top and seal. If hanging the suncatcher, punch a hole near the top and use a ribbon or string to attach it.
