A little bit of this, a little bit of that Spring has sprung and although we’re still navigating interesting times, there’s no stopping the arrival of the silly season – which is essentially storming towards us with bells on, eek! So, save last minute frenzy and stressful situations unfolding before Santa rolls into town, we’ve equipped this issue with some instore shopping and team building speak, end-of-year celebration ideas, and a Bucket List must-do for all ages. Inspiring is the word on the street and on paper this issue. We take a dive into the Bay of Plenty’s latest acquisition – the Motiti Projection Area – focused on the renewal and preservation of three reef systems off Motiti Island, and restoring balance where kina barrens have long reigned supreme – turn to page 40 to learn more. Heading further up the coast, we share words with Sofia Minson – whose artwork proudly graces our cover – discussing how her family ties to the Bay of Plenty and the East Cape influence her works. With summer on the trajectory – and staying local and home–centric still a firm focus – we touchdown on favourite eats (turn to page 37 for our spring lamb recioe), favourite activities (check out Skyline's revamped luge) and thought-train for the backyard (turn to page 46 to pool your thoughts). And, for those parents in want of homebased inspiration, we take the sting out keeping the kids entertained! Our bee-focused spread – bee house, candles and eats – will create a hive of activity at your place! Take timeout this spring to gather your thoughts, take a deep breath (turn to page 31 for some Breathe Better tips) and cruise into the warmer months – and don’t forget to enter into our competitions! Best,

Dyani (Dee) and the team EDITOR

Spring in our step! Kia ora, Well, this year is absolutely flying by! As the weather warms up, it’s great to see a ramp up of events and even more visitors to our district. It’s been wonderful to welcome our Australian cousins across the ditch too – when timing has allowed.

We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. Our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is perfect all year round; from the longer evenings to relaxing spring lunches.

Open 7 days from 11 am

With the warmer temperatures, now’s a great time to start checking out some of our great hiking and biking tracks. We’re lucky enough to be just a short driving distance from some of the best walking tracks in the country. And, even though there might still be a bit of rain, our unique, free-draining pumice soil means anytime is a good time to go for a bike ride. If you’re lucky enough to be on holiday in our district, don’t forget to check out LoveTaupo.com for activity ideas – you may even find a few good deals on there too. The Taupō Town Centre Transformation project is progressing well with phases three and four – the biggest and most exciting phases now well underway. This will include the transformation of Tongariro Street, including a reduction to two lanes and the redistribution of car parking. It will also see significant improvements for pedestrians, with better linkages between the CBD, Tongariro Domain and Lake Terrace. Roberts Street and Lake Terrace will be transformed into a people-friendly environment, with pedestrian-friendly connections to Tūwharetoa Street, and connections to the lake and our beautiful environment. This growth and development is really exciting and such a positive thing for the future of our district. We appreciate everyone’s patience navigating roadworks around town and helping keep the work crews safe.

Nga mihi,

David Trewavas MAYOR, TAUPŌ DISTRICT COUNCIL

Now and for the future Kia ora koutou, After a period of intensive community engagement, formal consultation, submissions hearings and careful deliberations, Tauranga City now has a forward-thinking Long-term Plan (LTP) to guide its investment priorities and work programme across the next 10 years. Given the scale of investment proposed and the rates increases required to contribute to spending on new and improved community facilities and infrastructure, this could have been a contentious process. Generally speaking, this wasn’t the case. The Tauranga City Council commissioners met with around 2000 people, attended 34 community meetings and heard about 50 hours of oral submissions on the draft LTP, and most of the feedback we received was both positive and realistic. Let’s face it, no-one likes paying more rates, but they also don’t like substandard or non-existent community facilities, sitting in traffic jams, or having unaffordable property prices because there hasn’t been enough investment in opening up land for housing development. And, those are costs we’re all paying now as a result of years of underinvestment in our city.

s 4 activitie 1 Location

The support from the community has been heartening and I’d particularly like to thank the commercial sector because businesses face a very significant rise in their rates costs, as a result of an increase in the commercial differential rate. Business people generally have recognised that they need to pay a fairer share of the rating burden and developers will also contribute through staged increases in development contributions. We’re all in this together, so now it’s time get on with the job – our city depends on it.

Anne Tolley COMMISSION CHAIR, TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL

Visit New Zealand’s yearround sunshine capital Kia ora koutou, Whakatāne is fortunate to be the reigning sunshine capital of New Zealand and boasts a ‘best beach’ title – as voted by NZ Herald readers. So, it’s no secret that we’re a compelling summer destination. What some people may not be so familiar with is that we enjoy settled, sun-filled days right throughout the year – making spring the perfect time to visit. Our district has a number of hidden gems that many people in our neighbouring regions may not have heard of, such as: Moutohorā Island, Ngā Tapuwae o Toi walking trails, Mataatua Wharenui, and there’s even Kiwi living in close proximity to our urban area. Outdoor activities also abound and include surfing, fishing, kayaking, water-skiing, walking trails, golf, glamping and cycling. With so much to see and do, Whakatāne is the ultimate post and pre-summer destination. The area is also growing and becoming increasingly popular as a place to live and work, especially for those tired of big-city life. Whakatāne proudly retains, and is protective of, its small-town feel, but with most of the conveniences you’d expect from a much larger place. We’ve just removed the hassle! Whakatāne District Council, with external funding support, is looking to invest in our town centre and riverfront areas, along with our satellite towns such as Edgecumbe, Matatā and Murupara. We see a really bright future ahead and encourage you to come visit our place – you might not want to leave. Kia kaha,

The Death Ship: A Fateful Voyage is an interactive exhibition which turns the clock back more than 100 years to the flu pandemic that hit New Zealand in late 1918, a devastating blow at the end of WWI. The exhibition allows the visitor to ‘step aboard’ the TAHITI and experience how the conditions gave rise to the outbreak.

nstore vs online shopping remains a contentious topic. The constant evolution of eCommerce (and not to mention recent events) has made online shopping easier, accessible and of course, convenient. However, although consumers can shop from literally anywhere, and even with the surge in eCommerce capabilities and various technologies, research affirms the majority of people still prefer the tactile experiences offered by bricks and mortar stores. Whilst our physical stores have taken a few hits in recent times, the experience is far from dead. According to a recent Retail Dive consumer survey, the ability to see, touch and feel products before buying ranks among the top reasons consumers choose to shop instore. Online was already growing, and that’s only accelerated postpandemic, but instore shopping experiences have remained irreplaceable, and there will always be aspects that can’t be replicated through screens.

Social interactions CEO of Retail NZ, Greg Harford reveals the most important motive for visiting bricks and mortar stores is the social aspect.

Bricks & Mortar Shopping beyond the screen still essential 14

  Deepika Sulekh

“Shopper’s value the social interactions of going instore, whether it’s with their friends and family, staff, or just connecting with the community,” says Greg. “Physical spaces bring people together in ways that the internet can’t – one of the key strengths of bricks and mortar stores.” Nowadays, what people are after more than anything is a holistic experience – getting together with friends, going out for coffee, a stroll around the mall, and turning it into a day out instead of a few moments in front of a screen. Our regions boast great shopping experiences with town and city centre shopping featuring top brands, iconic New Zealand design, souvenirs, boutique fashion, adventure sports and so much more.

A weekend visit to the local market, and a stop in at one of the many cafes or an art gallery along the way, is common practise for many.

being stimulating at the same time, is a key to encouraging here-andnow purchases – something many retailers are intent on fostering, affirms Greg.

Personalised shopping experiences

Omnichannel shopping experiences

One of the key services not available online is a personalised experience. Whether it’s through product curation, personal styling, instore engagement or customer relationships. Stores can create a memorable customer experience, making shoppers feel special and reduce the uncertainty they have online.

According to Shopify, retailers experience a 190%+ increase in revenue when they sell on more than one channel, so there’s a high chance people combine online and instore shopping. Often people visit a store before making a purchase online (and vice versa), use click and collect, curbside pickup, and other methods. So, in today’s modern shopping times, it’s essential that we give people the option to get their hands on their products in the most convenient way possible.

“eCommerce is seen as complementary to stores, mainly with a transactional focus, where the emphasis is just on the sale,” says Greg. “Bricks and mortar, on the other hand, fulfil a psychological need of being connected, engaged with the community, and just carrying out a favourite activity.” Even with the rise of modern online customer service tools, nothing beats face-to-face customer service. Sure, online reviews and descriptions can help, but interacting with a knowledgeable salesperson is far more effective – someone who understands the products, can offer

convenience, instant attention, and great customer experience.

“Omnichannel is definitely the way to go,” agrees Greg. “As important as it is to push online for marketing and generating awareness, you shouldn’t ignore your offline space. The key to a great customer experience is making it as easy to navigate and as seamless as possible.”

Changing shopping habits By the time we walk into a shop, we’ve probably seen something on social media, scanned the reviews and done our research before choosing what to buy. In response, stores are reworking their strategies to meet these changes in consumer preferences and trends. Product curation reduces the choices shoppers have and avoids overwhelming customers by providing just a few select options – taking the guesswork out of what to buy. Of course, some still enjoy taking the time to browse, enjoy the music and just linger, which is known to give people a positive psychological boost. People also commonly fantasise as they browse, increasing the chance of impulse buying, which doesn’t happen as often online. So, rethinking store layouts to encourage social distancing whilst 15

Ride like the wind T

o say that it’s been a dreary winter would be a bit of an understatement, so I have been ready and waiting to ditch the igloo and dip into the spring air. And, I know we’ve been thinking about sunsets and horizons, but what about riding into them? Horse riding may be an old school activity, but it’s an awesome way to spend quality time outdoors and go beyond the gym or usual run. I’m a total beginner, but was keen to give it a go, so I opted for a favourite local go-to –Horse Trekking Lake Okareka – to try it out! It’s important to be guided by an expert or a trained professional, especially if you’re new on the scene. I signed up for the one-and-a-halfhour native bush trek, which caters for non-riders as well as experienced riders, and incorporates all the landscapes – farms, mountains, lakes – the perfect place to tick horse riding off your bucket list. There is a 30-minute beginners walk option if you’re not feeling confident, but I highly recommend trying this one to get a feel for the real deal. The ride begins at the stables where you meet Lucy and her team who settle you in and provide you with all the gear and advice needed for a great first-time experience. Your horse is chosen depending on your riding experience and size. I was lucky enough to partner up with Keeper – one very laid-back horse who loves to cruise at an easy pace.

18

Lucy’s horses are calm, careful, safety conscious and know what they’re doing. You just need to take it easy and soak in the amazing scenery. Once saddled, you’ll learn the basics – using your legs to get your horse moving, holding the reins, learning how to stop and turn. Once those tasks are mastered, you head out for a gentle walk, starting with an uphill cliffside walk overlooking views of Lake Okareka, passing through paddocks, looking out to the majestic Mount Tarawera. Exploring Lake Okareka on horseback is as relaxing as it gets – breathing the fresh country air and travelling paths you couldn’t get to any other way. It’s where your mind really resets and you feel totally away from it all. But horse riding is also hard work! If you think that the horse does all the work, think again! After two hours in the saddle going up and down hills, traversing paddocks and bush, I certainly felt it! I can liken it most to a decent workout – it takes balance, strong legs and a stable core to stay in the saddle. Don’t worry, you’re not required to be fit to do it.

Ready to give it a shot? Rotorua’s biggest attraction is its natural beauty, which is what makes horse riding it’s trails, specifically Horse Trekking Lake Okareka, even better – but New Zealand is full of incredible horse trekking opportunities, so seek one out and ride on in.

Horse trek through native bush and working sheep and cattle farms with stunning views of Lake Okareka, Lake Tarawera and Mount Tarawera. Rides and horses to suit all abilities from beginners to experienced riders.

Why this year’s work Christmas party’s a winwin for mind, body and soul

W

ith screentime, ZOOM meetings and work-from-home mode firmly planted in our daily to-dos, breaking the new normal and getting out and about with colleagues and workmates has never been so important.

Make for the trees Celebrating end-of-year successes is a must-do, and there’s no better way to show you care than tuning into natures finest, says Bruce Thomasen

of Rotorua’s famous Treewalk – set within the majestic Redwoods Forest. “It’s a unique experience through and through – day and night. At Christmas, it’s the perfect time to have breakfast in the forest, or perhaps afternoon tea with Redwood themed cup-cakes, or canapes and pre-dinner drinks,” enthuses Bruce. And for those wanting to challenge their team to something a little more adventurous – go out on a limb. “Our Altitude product on the other hand is for those wanting an extra thrill, big heights and adventure. It is fully guided and harnessed, and looms at 25m high, features two spirals, 25 jungle bridges, three flying foxes and one big jump descent – a great team building option!” Like many businesses feeling their way through a COVID-19 environment, the opportunity to look at what really matters, is something not lost on Bruce and his Treewalk team. “Being in nature and amongst a 120-year-old forest is inspiring and for some, healing. It’s a great option because all of the team can do it, we cater for two to 250 people.”

Aim for the sky Branching out and taking your team to new heights are sentiments Andrew Jensen and his team at Rotorua Skyline attest to. “Company events are a great way to bring your team closer together – break down walls and barriers, and help employees to engage beyond the everyday routine,” he says. And, the diversity of Skyline Rotorua’s offerings makes it the ultimate player to help businesses achieve stronger ties, says Andrew. “Skyline Rotorua has something for everyone! Head up the scenic gondola ride – on the side of Mt

Ngongotaha – and then jump into a fun-filled luge ride down the Scenic Track with your team and enjoy the casual and rustic setting of the Hidden Forest venue that awaits you at the bottom,” he enthuses. “Or take a turn at ziplining or on the Skyswing, then meet your group at Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar and enjoy a delicious buffet.” And, for those wanting a parred back, leisurely get-together, Skyline delivers both the action-packed and the cool, calm and collected. “The VH wine tasting room is set up so you can pop in and take your senses on a trip around our country,” says Andrew. “We also have the best view in town, so find a spot in our terraced setting or take a stroll on our walking track and say hello to our resident alpacas.”

Take a cruise Taking time out to share an experience with your team mates, bask in natural beauty and enjoy the bounties of Lake Taupō, is the ticket to signing off a significantly challenging year. So, why not cruise the lake in style and celebrate everyone’s hard 19

work with a little luxe. “Regal Flyer is Taupō’s premier luxury launch, and our engaging and experienced team onboard are experts at providing a personalised experience for all groups – large and small,” says Adi Walker of Regal Flyer. “The vessel is designed for entertaining, with spacious areas both inside and out, spread over two levels – and we boast an impressive menu, catering to all dietary requirements and budgets.”

endless options tailored specifically to each teams wants.”

A waterway cruise gifts ample opportunity to participate in an abundance of activities – both action packed and laid back. “Passengers can participate in a friendly bout of clay target skeet shooting, troll slowly for fresh water trout, view the incredible Māori Rock Carvings, or anchor up in a secluded bay for a swim and a paddleboard, and celebrate over a beer and good music,” says Adi. And, for those with limited boating experience – there’s no sea legs required for a day out on the Regal Flyer. “A scheduled, catered charter aboard the Regal Flyer provides peace-ofmind that you have a defined start and finish time and everything is taken care of,” says Adi. “Generally, our bookings are three-to-four hours for an all-encompassing experience that doesn’t feel rushed, but if you

Turning a hand to painting gifts an opportunity to express feelings, emotions and thought-train beyond words, it also helps to sharpen the mind and boost memory skills. And, when paired with a tipple of your favourite drop and good company – it’s a creative winning duo. A combo the team at Taupō’s Paintvine know all too well. “Paintvine is the perfect blend of creativity and conversation to connect, unwind or celebrate a big win with your group, friends or team,” says Alex Hamilton of Paintvine. “Best of all, you don’t require any artistic experience, we can come to you, or organise your dream venue for you.” And, to make the whole experience even simpler – and enjoyable – Paintvine provide your team with everything you need, and do all the clean-up. Unsure about tapping into your talents? Don’t be. “A corporate Christmas party is the perfect excuse to try something a little different – Paintvine is fast becoming a favourite creative night out because it captures the free spirit in all of us,” says Alex.

Hit the track Swapping out ZOOM time online for zooming around a track in a kart is a sure-fire way of getting the adrenaline pumping, the face smiling and kicking the competitive edge into action – and Taupo Karts are braced to deliver a fun-filled day out for businesses of all ages, sizes and driving capabilities. “Karting is a great team building exercise, it can help work mates develop closer ties with each other and an understanding of their competitive nature outside a typical working week,” says Craig Greenwood of

Taupo Karts. And, for those concerned about cornering, speed and safety, there’s no need to fear, a day out at Taupo Karts is focused on gearing everyone up for a great – and safe – ride. “A typical corporate experience would begin with a sign-in, then a health and safety briefing, then we’d prep everyone with helmets and gloves, this is followed by a practise session, and once everyone was set to go, we’d do an 18-lap race,” says Craig. “And this is followed with a podium presentation with fastest lap times.” Taupo Karts can easily accommodate groups of five to 100 people, and Craig recommends locking in a minimum of one-to-two hours for a session.

plenty of gluten-free options on our menu too. And, we serve 14 taps of handcrafted beverages all made onsite.” Ensuring your work do is a successful one – not just an average one – means choosing a venue that’ll pivot to your own wants and needs, and deliver beyond expectations. “People want an experience – and options – not just a stock standard two-to-three hour break away from work,” says Rebecca. “So, we deliver above and beyond to ensure they create lasting memories. We have a live stage for bands, we can source and serve multiple beverage and cuisine options – possibilities galore.”

Taupō’s Crafty Trout is renowned for its exceptional fare, handcrafted brews, indoor and outdoor spaces and live music offerings – making it a number one hit with both young and old, and locals and visitors to the region. “Our décor and ambience is like nothing else in Taupō, which is essential when you are seeking a venue that facilitates the opportunity to meaningfully connect, bond, converse and mingle with your workmates,” says Rebecca DraperKidd of the Crafty Trout. “We offer the best pizzas in town and have

Youth Photo rejuvenation in focus  Advertorial

P

hoto rejuvenation is one of the ultimate – and most popular – skin treatments, gifting younger, firmer, glowing skin. As we age, skin problems like pigmentation, sun damage, brown spots, redness, broken capillaries and rosacea, become more prominent and common. Fortunately, as always, Diamond Laser has a solution, making it even easier to say goodbye to blemishes and uneven skin. Diamond Laser Medispa prides themselves on providing skin treatments that enhance each client’s natural beauty by improving their appearance. Thanks to our skincare expert Olivia, we have the lowdown on everything we need to know about photo rejuvenation . . .

What exactly is photo rejuvenation? Photo rejuvenation is a popular, non-invasive treatment used to improve many skin conditions. It uses specific wavelengths of light to treat pigmented and vascular lesions in the skin (brown and red pigments), simultaneously stimulating the production of collagen.

How does it work? Photo rejuvenation works on the ‘Theory of Photothermolysis’. This occurs when light is absorbed into excessive melanin (the dark pigment) 22

in your skin and haemoglobin (the red colour in your blood vessels). This light converts to heat, which damages the target cells, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. The cells that contain the pigment naturally move toward the surface of the skin and shed – leaving a much lighter pigmented lesion, or one that is no longer visible. Because vascular conditions exist deeper in the skin, they gradually fade within a few weeks.

What are the key treatment areas? The most common treatment area is the face, but you can treat any part of your body that experiences, • freckles, sunspots and general pigmentation, • facial vascular lesions, spider veins, broken capillaries and red spots, • diffused redness, rosacea and red scarring, • uneven and blotchy skin, • sun damage.

How should we expect the skin to react after the treatment? This varies from person-to-person, however, some claim to experience a sunburn like sensation lasting two-to-five hours, with redness and swelling lasting up to several days, or sensitivity to heat felt for two days post-treatment.

Are there any side effects? Side effects are uncommon but there are some potential complications

including prolonged redness and swelling, darker or whiter patches of pigment, or blistering – which is quite rare.

How many treatments are needed, and how far apart are they? Pigmented lesions generally require one-to-three sessions performed approximately every seven-to-28 days – or when all the darkened cells have completely shed. Skin rejuvenation generally requires two-to-six treatments performed at weekly or fortnightly intervals to achieve the best results in skin texture, pore size and firmness. Improvements can continue to be noted up to three months after the last treatment.

What does photo-rejuvenation feel like? Each pulse of light usually feels like a hot elastic band snapping on your skin. This is due to the light converting to heat in the targeted lesion. Due to the advanced technology and coolglide system, patient comfort is substantially better than any other medical grade systems.

What happens to the pigmented and vascular lesions after the treatment? Pigmented lesions will generally go darker, sometimes almost black, then will fall off within seven to 28 days (depending on the area of the body) or will just gradually fade. Vascular lesions such as broken blood vessels, will either disappear immediately, appear purplish in colour or varying shades of grey to black. They will then gradually fade or disappear. Diffused redness will usually appear immediately redder, then gradually fades within two-tothree weeks.

What sort of results can I expect? A 70-90% reduction of pigmentation can generally be expected with visible

improvements seen after each treatment. Recommended skin care and strict sun protection helps to maintain results for much longer and continues to improve the skins appearance. Please note, you will get better results using the correct prescribed skin care.

Who will perform my photo rejuvenation treatments? Your treatments will be performed by one of our Dermal Therapists, who are all qualified and experienced Photo Rejuvenation and Laser Safety Officers.

Cultural appreciation coupled with a desire to shirk societal conformity, has gifted Sofia the freedom to paint intuitively – and unhindered in her pursuit to capture the marvels, mysteries and paradoxes of the universe.

“I am playful, spontaneous and led by my right brain in the studio. As a piece starts to form, my pattern recognition and narrative forming left brain kicks in. I start to see symbols and threads within the piece that are highly synchronous and contain potent messages,” she explains. “When a painting is finished, and I get to stand back and soak it all in, I begin to write the story about the piece and give it a title.”

Find your own footing Sofia’s advice to would-be artists, here and abroad, painter or performer – all artist mediums inclusive? “I think artists should live and create from whatever place they are drawn to. Trust your body and intuition about where you need to be. Paradigms of learning and doing business are swiftly changing. If everyone isn’t cocreating in commercial or educational relationships and profiting happily, something’s got to change. Perhaps you have a map to a new way of educating yourself and a new model of doing business that is true for you?” she enthuses. “Living in abundance is about learning to ride the waves of money coming in and money going out. Gone are the Van Gogh days of cutting off our ears and living in squalor.”

Rotorua: The perfect central location for exploring  Advertorial

Rain may be a frequent visitor in winter or spring, but if you also plan to visit Rotorua, never fear, there’s still so much for you and your family to do here when it’s raining – whether you prefer to stay as dry as a feather, or you’re a true duck at heart.

Hop into a fully enclosed gondola to ride to the top of Mount Ngongotahā. Disembark inside and head straight to Volcanic Hills Winery to enjoy the wines that are made right at the bottom of the mountain from grapes grown throughout New Zealand. If the rain isn’t bucketing, a bucketlist activity you must try is the Luge. Built right here in Rotorua in 1985, it has become a household name

reathing may be a normal biological function but it’s one many of us don’t give too much airtime to – until we have to. Unfortunately, 700,000 Kiwis suffer from asthma and respiratory diseases – one in eight adults, one in seven children. With respiratory rates high, and asthma hospitalisation rates in children under 15 years nearly three times the rate of adults aged 30 – 64, according to the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ’s 2018 Impact Report, a call for greater awareness and support for respiratory health is critical, says Letitia Harding, CEO of Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ.

children’s asthma rates across the country – excepting Auckland, where the rate is 10.4% compared to the national average of 14.3%.

“Sadly, New Zealand has one of the worst rates of asthma and respiratory disease in the developed world. The problem is exacerbated by the relatively poor housing standards in New Zealand,” says Letitia. “I do not think people realise that a condition like asthma can be life threatening if not managed well – 77 Kiwis die from asthma each year – perhaps that is because respiratory disease is so common.”

Now in its sixth year, Breathe Better September has been working to stem the flow of New Zealand’s asthma and respiratory crisis. Last year they had a record number of Better Breathing Heroes take part, and raised over $20,000 for the Foundation.

Unbounded and far-reaching A common threat and a widespread one, explains Letitia. According to the Foundation’s 2018 Impact Report, there’s no significant variation in

“Our report showed adult asthma rates were higher in Whanganui, Mid Central, Hutt Valley and South Canterbury DHBs, and lower in Waitemata, and Counties Manukau. Mortality rates were highest in adults aged over 65,” she says. “With chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) your risk increases with age. The average age of COPD onset is around 70, but it is sevento-eight years earlier for Māori and Pacific peoples.”

Pick up the pace

“This year, we’re encouraging Kiwis to Step Up for Breathe Better September and complete a step challenge. You can sign up as an individual or as a team. People are also welcome to come up with their own fundraising ideas – bake sales, runs around the block,” enthuses Letitia. “With money raised, we

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

undertake a great range of activities to help health professionals and help people living with these conditions, and educate and advocate for better respiratory health outcomes for all New Zealanders.”

Stay in control And for those keen to up the ante on their breathing and improve respiratory heath, its not all huff and puff. “Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and vaping, and ensuring your home is warm and well-ventilated can have a real impact. Good breathing techniques are really important – they can improve posture, heart rate variability and contribute to reducing blood pressure by adding more oxygen to the body,” explains Letitia.

One breathing technique many physiotherapists recommend is pursed lipped breathing. This involves breathing in through your nose and out through puckered lips – as if you’re blowing out a candle. It slows your breath down, and helps to reduce the amount of air trapped in your lungs. To get involved this September, visit Step Up for Breathe Better September at, breathebetterseptember.co.nz:

Skyline’s Luge Makeover  Advertorial

F

or the ultimate thrill, few attractions beat the thrill of luging down a mountain. And, if you’re a fan of Skyline Rotorua’s, you’re one step closer to a new adrenaline fix, with three new and improved luge track options coming this summer. As part of the ongoing evolution of the Luge experience, the worldfamous advanced track is ‘under FUNstruction’ while Skyline Rotorua have been hard at work, reenvisioning the park’s classic luge adventure into a more exhilarating ride – making the fun last longer. The existing 550 metre track will trade its thrilling ride for 1500 metres of three new tracks, with more corners, tunnels, 360-degree corkscrews, and multiple pathways to the bottom. It will be a first-ofits-kind immersive luge experience in New Zealand. In addition, all tracks will be decked with new lighting, which means night luge options will be available on every path. Details of the project were unveiled earlier this year in celebration of 35 years since Rotorua’s luge track opened as the first commercial luge operation in the world, and the development of luge carts for the rest of the world. “Since 1985 when Skyline Rotorua became the first luge site in the world to operate commercially, visitors both young and old have grown to love this must-do iconic kiwi

adventure – the luge,” says Skyline Rotorua’s general manager, Andrew Jensen. “I’m thrilled that this exciting project will refresh and improve the experience for our customers over the many years to come,” he adds. The upgrade comes in the midst of a challenging period for wider tourism, however it will provide much additional value to an already strong domestic customer base. “It goes without saying that due to the impacts of COVID-19, the past 12 months have been extremely difficult to navigate, but we’re incredibly optimistic about the future due to the resilience shown by not only the people of Rotorua but all New Zealanders as recognised internationally. We’ve been humbled by the support of domestic visitors during this time and see these developments as a way for Kiwis to do something new here on site.” The project blessing took place last year in partnership with local Ngati Whakaue kaumatua and other iwi representatives throughout the planning and consenting processes, while archaeologists have overseen the initial earthworks stage of the build. Skyline is very grateful for their support and continued guardianship of the land Skyline Rotorua occupies on the side of Mt Ngongotahā. The scenic and intermediate tracks will continue to operate throughout the construction period, so you can still get your fix while you wait.

Digital Marketing For Your

eCommerce

Website

S

o, you have yourself a welldesigned, conversion hungry, lead-generating eCommerce website… so where are all the customers? No matter what you’ve been told, just because you’ve built it does not mean they will come. Getting traffic to your website and maximising sales requires some work. While sales revenue is an obvious goal, conversion rate, brand awareness and customer engagement are all measures of success you may want to track. Setting these goals and then using analytics to assign a value to them is what will allow you to test and measure your campaign ROI (return on investment). If you don’t set realistic goals and track them throughout, it will be increasingly difficult to know how successful your marketing efforts really are. Here are some channels with the most proven track records when it comes to ROI and ROAS (return on ad spend):

34

Email marketing Email is still an effective way to connect with customers. It allows you to build a subscriber list, personalise content and follow up – think, birthday vouchers, abandoned cart reminders, and deals to loyal customers.

wrong, you’ll burn quickly through click budget and get poor results. The surest road to successful ROI is to partner with an agency that is an official Google Partner, so it’s done right and you realise results faster.

“Email is the killer mobile experience everyone seems to be forgetting about, and many marketers stopped putting content in the inbox in favour of blogging, so there’s a massive opportunity to “zig” when everyone is zagging.” – Ryan Deiss, Founder and CEO of DigitalMarketer.com and Founder of RivalBrands.com.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Aka Paying For Google Ads With over 75% of all desktop search taking place on Google search, it’s really the only search engine in town worth worrying about. SEM is the pay-per–click version of search and returns consistently high ROI. If you need results for your new website NOW, this is it. If done

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – being liked by Google Google is #1 because it delivers the most relevant content to its users – so your goal is simple – have the right (relevant) content that people are searching for on your site. The top 10 (first page) search results on Google account for 92% of all traffic. A whopping 33% of all organic clicks

go to the first ranked search result. Traffic drops off by 95% on page two. So, it’s pretty clear the money’s on page one.

SEO is a medium to long term strategy that yields great results with a solid content strategy, frequently posting relevant content, good metadata practice, proper use of alt tags and backlinks – all factors to achieving a good search rank.

Google display ads This is a network of over two million sites that serve Google Display Ads. These are different than Google Ads displayed based on keyword searches. Display Ads appear on any number of websites like news, video streaming sights, in–apps and countless other places. They’re great for remarketing and brand awareness.

Instagram shopping Designed for mobile experience and an image-oriented approach, Instagram is the social media channel of choice for the millennial with a massive 64% of its userbase comprised of the 18–34 age range. Instagram now has a marketplace which caters right through to purchase. If you make or sell a physical product, this should be a channel that you are using. Your existing website can be set up to push a content feed, meaning you only must maintain one platform while enjoying the benefits of an extra channel.

Facebook Facebook is the preferred social media platform of pretty much everyone else online, from Baby Boomers and Generation X to Xennial; and with 2.23 billion monthly active users, it is still the number one social media platform. Facebook is a treasure trove for eCommerce and allows probably THE most tailored paid advertising. You can use Facebook Ads at any stage of the sales funnel. From brand awareness to remarketing with Facebook pixel, you can’t afford not to be there. Another perk, targeting audiences by hobbies and interests – a ridiculously powerful tool not available with most digital marketing.

Lamb with Honey and Pistachios

The best of field & farm S

pring has lamb written all over it. And, when paired with honey, it’s a sure-fire flavoursome combo to satisfy a crowd and kickstart warmer, lighter evenings to come.

What you’ll need . . . Serves four-to-six • 2-3 kilo lamb shoulder or leg (bone in) • Five cloves of garlic, diced • Half a cup of firmly packed brown sugar • Half a cup of red wine vinegar • Half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon • Rind of an orange (or the like) • Salt and pepper • Drizzle of olive oil

For the dressing . . . • Half a cup of honey • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • Half a cup of pistachios (toasted and halved) • 2 cups of chopped, fresh parsley (or a mix of parsley and flat-leaf parsley)

How to . . .

First up, turn your oven to 180°C – or 160°C fan-forced. Mix together the garlic, sugar, vinegar, rind and cinnamon in a bowl. Place the lamb in a baking tray and rub the mix all over – pressing it into every nook

and cranny – season with salt and pepper and drizzle with oil. Cover the tray with foil – tightly – and roast for two-and-half hours. Then, remove the foil and roast for an additional 30 minutes – it should golden up! Whilst you are waiting for the lamb to cook, make the dressing. Simply place the honey, vinegar, pistachios and parsley and stir to combine. Season with a little salt and pepper as required and drizzle over your cooked lamb! To complete the meal, serve your honeyed lamb with a herby orzo salad!

And if your ideal scenario is somewhere with diverse natural environments within a stones–throw of each other, you best get your skates on to Whakatāne. Outdoor activities abound in the Whakatāne district, with the morning’s quandary on whether to hit the beach, harbour or venture out to sea, or go for native bush, lakes and rivers. The thing is, it’s a difficult decision as all of this is within easy walking or driving distance. The Whakatāne district is renowned for its superb walking, tramping and biking trails, both coastal with incredible ocean vistas, and awe-inspiring tracks through ancient native forests. Nga Tapuwae o Toi (Footprints of Toi) walkway, connecting Whakatāne township and Ōhope Beach, offers a diverse natural landscape and spectacular scenery to rival any of New Zealand’s great walks. The 16 kilometre loop is achievable as a half-day walk, or enjoy in sections suitable for the whole family. The trail includes pa sites of major historic significance, diverse native forest, spectacular pohutukawa stands, unsurpassed coastal views, seabird colonies and native birds in abundance. The trail passes through Ōtarawairere Bay – the hidden jewel of the 38

Whakatāne-Ōhope area. Pohutukawa trees loom over a sandy beach of crushed seashells, and the warm waters of the Pacific lap quietly against the shore. KG Kayaks offer guided tours following the coastal section of Ngā Tapuwae o Toi. Departing from the Whakatāne Heads or West End at Ōhope Beach, take in the spectacular scenery and stop for morning tea in one of the secluded bays. West End is also where locals love to surf. With a sheltered, gentle break, it’s the perfect spot for beginners but you’ll also find the, ‘can’t get enough’, surfing set here too. Throw out a Shakka to the locals – they’ll love it. Whakatane has some brilliant bike trails, with something for every skill level, ranging from an easy family cruise to

adventurous mountain biking. Take the family to Onepu Mountain Bike Park, Burma Road, Ōhope Harbourside Trail or the Mōtū Dunes Trail in Ōpōtiki. Or meander on the Whakatāne River Warren Cole cycleway, a flat, paved ride that skirts the town. And if golf is your thing on holiday, you’re spoilt for choice. A range of both international-level coastal courses and picturesque country clubs offer the chance to explore the diverse scenery of the district. Ōhope International Golf Club is rated one of the top links courses in New Zealand and 10 minutes from town, the Whakatāne Golf Club championship level course offers another spectacularly scenic game.

hen the MV Rena container ship struck the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of Motiti Island 10 years ago it didn’t just cause mass disruption in the present time, it changed the landscape of what lies beneath for decades to come. Fortunately, maritime disasters like the Rena – New Zealand’s worst – aren’t a regular occurrence on our shores, but the impact of this particular event played a pivotal role in the rethinking of responsibility around the preservation of marine life and the reefs that support them. The launch of the Motiti Protection Area this August is the outcome of a lengthy, six-year legal battle, led by the Motiti Rohe Moana Trust in

the Environment Court. The win for the Trust is a first for the country, with regional councils now playing a greater role in protecting underwater marine environments.

Paving the way “This is the first time in New Zealand history where the Environment Court has directed a regional council to better protect an underwater marine environment – traditionally the Ministry for Primary Industries and Department of Conservation have been responsible,” says Sarah Omundsen of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. “It means that councils can now use the Resource Management Act to introduce controls that better protect marine plants and animals – and the outcome is going to be a positive for the sustainability of our oceans.” The new rules prohibit causing damage to flora and fauna on the reefs. This means marine life can no

One of those experts was Phil Ross – a marine ecologist at the University of Waikato – who has been diving these reefs the past decade, monitoring the damage and changes to their state. “The good news is that Ōtaiti has mostly recovered from the damage caused by the Rena,” says Phil. “However, there are now extensive kina barrens throughout the Bay of Plenty, with an expansion of kina barrens at Ōtaiti itself.” Kina barrens are areas of bare rocky reef where kina (sea urchins) have eaten all of the naturallyoccurring kelp and seaweed cover. The proliferation of kina, and the appearance of kina barrens, on a reef typically occurs when natural predators, snapper and crayfish, are reduced by fishing – thus altering its ecosystem. “By putting aside areas where we won’t fish, we’ll provide an opportunity for snapper and crayfish to return to their former abundances – this will reduce the kina and their impact on kelp forests,” explains Phil. “These protected areas will support the restoration and recovery of other marine species and habitats too, and create a space where people can go and observe healthy and functioning marine ecosystems.”

Pool your thoughts together and dive on in

ack in the day, those school peers with an inground pool were firm mates come summer, and it was the family member who owned a spa pool whose place we were always happy to visit. These luxuries of old may no longer be deemed exclusive but they still herald a crowd. And although the pandemic is largely responsible for major delays – globally – in manufacturing and shipping of swimming pools and spas, there’s no time like the present to float a few ideas.

Right time, right age For many families it’s not just the cost holding back the swimming pool reins, it’s the age factor of kids and pace of life – sentiments the Wilson family of Tauranga attest to. After owning homes in Australia with pools, and then settling back in New Zealand, they soon missed the social, relaxing aspect of pool ownership, but knew their second pool wind would have to wait – till now. “For us, the kids are at critical ages – we want them around, we want them off their phones, and with our new home, we want to enjoy it over the weekends – a pool centralises that,” explains Lily Wilson. “We’ve also opted for a heated pool – with solar panelling – so we can use it yearround, and because our daughter suffers from eczema, we’ve opted for a fresh water system instead of saltwater chlorination.” The breakthrough Naked System – by Aquanort here in New Zealand – is a prime example of fresh water technology, which relies on silver and copper to ionise pools, promising 46

to keep the water free from algae, bacteria and other unwanted and harmful organisms, and chemical and maintenance requirements on the down low. Whilst the Wilsons were well-versed in NZ Building Code legalisation in and around pools – i.e. height of fence must be 1.2m; a barrier to cover the pool if it’s heated; automatic closing gates; anything permanent outside the pool area that is able to be climbed on, must be at least 1.2m away from the fence – it was the extra costs that caught them unawares.

“We opted for fibreglass instead of concrete to keep the budget down, but it’s the concrete around the pool, the fencing, the underground cover that sits in the concrete, the heat pumps – that have added an additional 40K to the job,” explains Lily. “We’re stoked with final outcome but wished we’d added an additional 20% to budgeting, and if we did a pool again, we’d also do our own Geotech report and ensure our pool company was onto it when booking inspections.”

Alongside cardiovascular benefits, mental wellness, antibacterial and sleep all get the spa tick.

“A daily dip opens pores and blood vessels, aiding the cardiovascular system in more ways than one,” explains Warren Leslie, director of Trueform Spas – who are proudly Kiwi–made and owned for over 35 years. “Firstly, it allows the muscles to relax and the blood vessels to open up, this lowers blood pressure and promotes greater flow. When you submerge in warm water you actually achieve the same lowering of blood pressure you do when exercising for

“Our Trueform spas are equipped with ozonators – a device that artificially produces ozone,” explains Warren. “Because it’s a powerful oxidant, it kills most bacteria, removes impurities and microorganisms in the water, reduces the total number of dissolved solids so the water doesn’t have to be changed as often, reduces chemical usage and converts back to oxygen

Many people know of the physical benefits water therapy delivers, but it also promotes mental strength, adds Warren. “The hotter temperatures in a spa cause blood to rise to the surface, away from the core, resulting in a greater core clean and relaxation of our pituitary gland – decreasing stress by balancing out hormones, like cortisol, and our happy hormone, serotonin.” The upshot of a spa action? It’s the perfect body balancing act.

Top hiding spots for germs and bacteria revealed . . .

W

hen we think about where germs and bacteria hide, some obvious places come to mind – bathrooms and public spaces – but we often forget that they’re literally everywhere. So, when it comes to commercial cleaning, you need something that covers all nooks and crannies instead of the usual skim around during a routine clean. Check out some of the common hiding spots you need to consider, that could benefit from a deeper clean . . .

Cafés and restaurants Cafes are one of the most frequent gathering places for a range of purposes from catch ups, to study groups, to lunch dates, so are prone to contamination and bacteria growth from food residue. While traditional cleaning focuses on tabletops and tableware, things like chairs, menus, bars often go forgotten.

School buses From upholstery – sat upon by many a child – to condensation on the windows, school buses are hotspots for viruses, posing a high risk to students and staff beyond the bus. It’s a rare occasion that 100% of the bus interior is cleaned – and when it is, it’s tough getting into every spot.

Gyms Gyms are one of the top places harbouring germs because bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments. Hosting a range of equipment: weights, mats, and machines used,

it’s not easy keeping track of every surface.

Classrooms Desks, chairs, doors, benches, floors, equipment and other touchpoints are shared by children every day, and are one of the fastest breeding grounds for germs. Couple it with unknowingly coughing and sneezing, and virus spread escalates.

Door knobs, handles and railings People are constantly touching and retouching these surfaces with germy hands. This means they’re riddled with scuff, oils, viruses – and some! – due to high user volume.

Sustaining an engaged workforce when home and away

T

he working-from-home-economy has spawned beyond the pandemic and lockdowns globally. Here in New Zealand, remote working was a whole new ball game for 38% of us when COVID-19 struck last year, with a further 36% of us having worked from home every now and again, according to Otago University’s Remote Working Survey

conducted at Alert Level 3, and as reported in their Working Futures report.

50

This meant 74% of Kiwis had no regular experience of the workfrom-home environment before coronavirus arrived on our shores. Despite being thrown in the deep end, we mostly embraced this new phenomenon – and want it to continue – affirms the report. With the majority of the 2,560 respondents (67%) indicating they’d prefer a mix of working remotely a few times a week or month. The reality for many businesses, across many industries, is that the working-fromhome-economy is now a main stayer – and links with both the ‘information economy’ and ‘gig economy’ we navigate. In the US alone, 42% of their labour force now works from home full-time, and almost twice as many employees are working from home as at work, reports Stanford economist Nicholas

Bloom in his article, Stanford Research Provides a Snapshot of a New Working-from-home Economy. With flexi-working on the cards for the foreseeable future, keeping a workforce connected needs to go beyond standard incentivising and Friday night drinks around the water cooler, and incorporate measures that meet our demands and resolve the key challenges many of us face when distanced from our co-workers. A third of participants in the Otago University Remote Working study found collaboration and communication with their coworkers harder, with the report also highlighting where there is room

for improvement is in well-being and health and safety support, and that one of the main top challenges participants iterated in the workingfrom-home environment was lack of organisational support. So, how to stay unified as a team, share and feel the love, and keep communication pathways open, all

showcasing that when reciprocity is widespread in businesses and organisations it can promote learning, improve employee productivity and build a climate of trust. And, most importantly, it can help to strengthen ‘social capital ’ – a term coined by Baker, “how willing people are to help others in their social network” – even when we’re working from home or remotely. So, what is a Reciprocity Ring all about and how does it ignite greater togetherness in a business’ workforce? A Reciprocity Ring is built around asking for and giving help and the key to making the ring work is personal engagement, centring on the collective knowledge, networks and energy of a group to meet each person's request. Reciprocity Ring exercises gift the opportunity for everyone – employees, managers, directors – to make a request and fulfil the request of another participant. With everyone encouraged to be not just givers or takers but striving for an equal balance of giving and receiving.

whilst keeping our distance? We create rings of reciprocation, we start gaming and we invite our colleagues to learn more about the ‘real me’.

A little give and take According to Wayne Baker, one of the world’s foremost experts on building and strengthening connections – who serves as faculty director of the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship at the University of Michigan – the idea behind reciprocity is “I help you and you help someone else, and maybe that person will end up helping me (or someone else) sometime in the future.” He and his wife famously developed the ‘Reciprocity Ring’ exercise in 2001, with his research

According to author Adam Grant in his book, Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success, here’s how a Reciprocity Ring plays out: Each person presents a request to their group – something they cannot achieve or obtain on their own, it could be personal or professional life. Then the group members make contributions by matching up – bringing together – a solution, using their knowledge, resources, and/or connections with others. They must then connect, conduct discourse – both givers and takers – on how each will follow up with fulfilment of the request. Whoever is in charge of leading the session must debrief the group at the end and tune into the emotions which presented throughout the session. As a group tool, the Reciprocity Ring can dually exercise the payif-forward code and also work to strengthen connections – energising a team and building lasting

relationships. Fortunately, creating a Reciprocity Ring isn’t bound to one industry or organisation type cast. It can be applied to all – and can even be conducted remotely. For example, the Givitas tech platform – created by Wayne Baker and Adam Grant – facilitates this giving process. It is easy and simple to implement, and participate in, slotting seamlessly into a company’s daily, weekly or monthly routine.

Speak up and share some Establishing a Reciprocity Ring within an organisation is not the only tool we can bind to, to sustain a greater workplace connection. Individually, we can pro-actively carve better pathways forward for ourselves and our peers by taking time out to share and share alike. Chris Allaire, founder of Averity – a team-based software recruiting firm – shares in his Forbes Six Tips for Staying Connected with Your Team While Working Remotely, that regularly scheduling in 15-minute chats with your peers keeps connections fresh and relationships well-rounded. “These calls don't need to have an agenda but can help people feel less isolated and more in touch, as they give the opportunity to connect in the same way you might if you asked someone to join you on a coffee run. These types of calls also don't need to only occur between manager and employee. Reach out to your peers or colleagues in other parts of the organisation,” writes Chris. “With a little forethought and effort, this can 51

be a feel-good moment for some and a real lifeline for others.”

And, when you do instigate an impromptu phone call, team chat or at-the-desk conversation, allowing yourself to speak up and share beyond a working subject line, is a winning ticket to building genuine connections, explains Chris. “When you open up about your situation and interests outside of work, people learn more about who you genuinely are. Sparking quick ‘non-business’ conversations over video can have surprising results. The opportunities for conversations of a more intimate nature do exist, especially in one-on-one meetings,” he writes. “The key is to maintain interest, curiosity and focus so the exchanges are genuine and without distraction.”

It’s game on Alongside a greater-focus on the up-close-and-personal, upping your gameplay as a team can keep you engaged and sustainably building connections – especially for those sales-centric businesses. It’s as easy as putting a new spin on a game of old – gamification. Sales gamification is focused on incorporating gaming elements into a non-gaming context to improve engagement levels. Think of the leader boards in the old arcade games: the flashing, motivating lights and sound of the pinball machines, and all the stunning visual elements, all built into modern engagement solutions – scores, coaching, visual

stimulus, reward point stores. Gamification software is fast rolling its way to popularity globally, including New Zealand – one such example is the coalescing of Spinify’s gamification software and sales agency, Leading Edge. “As Head of Customer Experience at Leading Edge NZ, I’m continually looking for ways we can up our performance stakes. Our company ethos is all about doing sales better than everyone else – so we have to maintain a high calibre of workmanship,” explains Jonathan. “Spinify’s gamification software – with its lively leader boards – really fits with what we are trying to achieve as a company. We want to establish sustainable means for encouraging, inspiring and rewarding our employees – not running the gauntlet with highlycomplex monthly campaigns that may have no positive long-term sales impact. I firmly believe it’s the core of gamification – consistently motivating and rewarding – that lends itself to a healthier workplace and ethic for all.” So, how does gamification bring a workforce closer? Think leaderboards with live-tracked targets to motivate and encourage, gaming elements – points, badges, levels on an achievement ladder – that gift daily, weekly and monthly rewards, a points rewards store – flexible rewards that fit an employee’s wants i.e. a day off or a pressie, and data-centric dashboards in the real-time to keep everyone motivated – even when they’re working from home. And, it’s all packaged up in an easy to implement, cost-effective software solution, which integrates seamlessly

with all major platforms. “What gamification does is serve a more dynamic and responsive approach to achieving business goals,” says Jonathan. “For example, we can quickly change things up to focus on a new product launch, tactical initiatives or additional monthly sales goals. On top of this Spinify is flexible enough to allow a broad range of rewards. We see this as a huge plus because we’re conscious money isn’t the only thing spurring our employees into action.” Spinify’s gamification software has also proven a great tool for driving wellbeing at Leading Edge. “We’re big on monitoring health and wellness because we know that stress can dominate in high pressure roles. Spinify helps us hit the big targets whilst ensuring our employees have fun and don’t burn out.” Simultaneously, gamification is proving valuable for the Leading Edge team beyond leaderboard action. It’s encouraging hands-on interaction amongst them and strengthening comradery. The positive spin-off from instantly showcasing a team member’s success up on screen – for example, closing a big sales deal – is that as a collective, they can now go to that member’s desk and give them a pat on the back, have a chat or bring them a coffee. Whereas, without sales gamification, it might have been two or three days before news of a big deal was passed around. Now, they can celebrate wins as they happen. “And, for those days we’re not all in the office to give someone a physical high-five (the majority of the Leading Edge team work from home Tuesdays and Thursdays) our gamification platform feeds into our Microsoft Teams so we can keep those virtual thumbs up and comments rolling in,” explains Jonathan. “We’re just starting out on our Spinify journey, we’re already seeing big gains. We’d highly recommend to it any business who is focused on strengthening and motivating their team better ways forward.”

Spring is here, so there’s no better time to talk flowers and trees, birds –and bees! Sweeten up the homefront with a little honey creativity in the kitchen, light up the lounge with some homemade candles, and keep buzzy with a bee house construction.

Life is bee-autiful!   Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

Build for The Bees Bees across the globe are under threat– much of their natural habitat has been lost across the past six decades, including over 90% of wildflower meadows. And, pesticides, intensive farming and climate change are constantly keeping them on the move. So, by building a bee-friendly home in your garden, you’re helping them bloom!

You’ll need . . . • Nesting materials such as hollow plant stems, bunches of dried twigs, grasses, lengths of bamboo cane. Aim for a range of diameters from 2mm to 10mm – and ensure they are all dry • A small wooden box (think shoe box size, untreated timber is best) or use a two-litre used plastic bottle (or length of water 54

pipe) • Sandpaper • Craft knife and cutting mat • Strong twine, about 1m long • Garden clippers or secateurs • Modelling clay (optional)

How to . . . Step 1: If using a plastic bottle, cut both ends to create a cylinder, if using a length or water pipe or a small wooden box, sand all the edges till smooth. Step 2: Then measure the length of your cylinder or depth of your box – aim for roughly 15 to 20cm in length. Step 3: Cut and trim your dry sticks, twigs and bamboo 3cm shorter than your measurement. Why? Because the stems and canes need to stay dry inside their case otherwise the bees wont burrow down deep inside them. Step 4: Just remember if using hollow bamboo canes, bees can’t burrow

through the knots in bamboo, so avoid canes with too many knots. Step 5: Use your sandpaper to smooth the ends of the bamboo or stems if they are rough and uneven because bees don’t like sharp edges at the entrance to holes. And, wooden splinters on sticks could also cut their wings. Step 6: Then using your modelling clay block the back of the sticks, stems and bamboo canes, and using your twine tightly bind them altogether into one, two or three small bunches. Step 7: If using a plastic cylinder, thread a length of twine through it so you can hang up the finished bee house. If making a bee house box, you could secure it to tree, fence or nail the bottom of it to a post. Step 8: Finally, pack your twiggy bunches tightly into your cylinder or box, and you are ready to start bee hosting!

Honey and Dees Bees.

How to . . . Step 1: Cut a sheet of beeswax in half to make a standard-size taper candle (roughly 45cm).

B e e s wax Candles

Step 2: Measure the wick or ‘string’ against a cut (halved) sheet of beeswax, ensuring there's an additional 2.5cm of wick at the very top of the candle. Use scissors to cut the wick. Step 3: Press the wick into the beeswax sheet. Remember, there should be approximately 2.5cm of wick overflowing from the top. Step 4: Tightly fold the beeswax sheet over the wick to secure it in place, then continue rolling the sheet to make a candle. The tighter the candle is rolled, the slower it will burn. Step 5: Repeat the steps above to make your other candles. One sheet of halved beeswax will make two candles.

Pop your candle into a holder or secure in a glass jar (with a little hot dripped wax to hold it in place) and shine away!

Oh Bee-have These honey bubble treats are sure to get everyone buzzing around the plate. So, snap, crackle and pop your way through Spring!

On the ingredient list . . . • 125g butter • 2 Tbsp honey – clover, wildflower, manuka, kanuka – it all tastes good! • 1 cup white sugar • 3 ½ cups rice bubbles

How to . . . First up, grease a tin – 30cm in size – or thereabouts. Next, place the butter, sugar, honey and sugar in a medium sized saucepan. Stir the mixture over a medium-to-high heat until it reaches boiling point. Then, turn down that heat but ensure it gently boils away for five mins.

Who doesn’t love a little ambience and turning a hand to some beetastic crafts! These tapered beeswax candles are super easy to make, are pretty and purposeful, and the ideal gift for birthdays and Christmas.

What you’ll need . . . • Three full size 100% NZ Beeswax Sheets • A roll of Pure Cotton Unbleached Wick Wax sheet and wick supplies are available online and instore from retailers across the country, including Kotare Krafts, Candle Creations, Mossops

When time’s up, remove from heat and add your rice bubbles to the gooey mixture. Take your greased saucepan, and carefully press your mixture into it – make sure it’s as evenly spread as possible. Leave the mixture to set on the bench and mark into small squares. Once the honey bubble slice is cold, remove from the tin and cut into portions. Store in an airtight container. For additional sweetness, chocolate dip half of each piece and sprinkle with hundreds and thousands! Store in an airtight container. Yum! 55
