Isabel Allende nasceu em 2 de agosto de 1942, em Lima, no Peru, onde o seu pai diplomata se encontrava a trabalho. No entanto, a sua nacionalidade é chilena, tendo-se tornado cidadã norte-americana em 2003. Em 1945, seus pais se separaram e sua mãe retornou ao Chile, levando seus três filhos, onde Isabel passou sua infância e parte de sua juventude. Após sua mãe casar-se com outro diplomata, em 1953, a família foi morar na Bolívia e posteriormente no Líbano.

Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942, in Lima, Peru, where her diplomat father was on business. However, her nationality is Chilean, having become a US citizen in 2003.

In 1945, her parents separated and her mother returned to Chile, taking her three children, where Isabel spent her childhood and part of her youth. After her mother married another diplomat, in 1953, the family moved to Bolivia and later to Lebanon.

Em 1958, Isabel volta para Santiago, capital do Chile, onde inicia o curso de jornalismo. Nessa época, já começava a escrever contos infantis e peças para o teatro. Quatro anos depois ela casa-se com Miguel Frias, com quem teve dois filhos, Paula e Nicolás. Em 1967, passa a escrever para uma revista feminina e também pra uma revista infantil. Três anos depois passa a trabalhar na televisão, apresentando um programa de entrevistas. Sua peça de teatro, “O Embaixador”, estreou em 1972. Em 1973, ocorreu um golpe militar no Chile que depôs o presidente Salvador Allende, tio de Isabel. Com a instauração de uma ditadura militar no Chile e a morte de Salvador Allende, ela deixa o país, junto com sua família, refugiando-se em Caracas, na Venezuela.

Em 1987, se divorcia de seu marido e se muda para os Estados Unidos, onde vem a conhecer seu segundo marido, o advogado e romancista William C. "Willie" Gordon, de quem se divorcia em 2015.

In 1958, Isabel returns to Santiago, the capital of Chile, where she begins a journalism course. At that time, she was already starting to write children's stories and plays for the theater. Four years later, she married Miguel Frias, with whom she had two children, Paula and Nicolás. In 1967, she started writing for a women's magazine and also for a children's magazine. Three years later, she started working on television, hosting a talk show. Her theater play, “The Ambassador”, premiered in 1972.

In 1973, a military coup took place in Chile that deposed President Salvador Allende, Isabel's uncle. With the establishment of a military dictatorship in Chile and the death of Salvador Allende, she leaves the country, along with her family, taking refuge in Caracas, Venezuela.

In 1987, she divorced her husband and moved to the United States, where she met her second husband, lawyer and novelist William C. "Willie" Gordon, from whom she divorced in 2015.

Isabel é considerada mundialmente uma das principais revelações da literatura latino-americana contemporânea, e sua obra é fortemente marcada pela ditadura implantada no Chile, que derrubou o governo do primo de seu pai.

A obra que a consagrou como uma das grandes escritoras de seu tempo foi o Best-seller “A “A Casa dos Espíritos” de 1982, posteriormente adaptado para o cinema tendo em seu elenco grandes estrelas de Hollywood como Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glen Close, Antônio Banderas, Vanessa Redgrave e Winona Ryder.

Dois anos depois a autora lança outro sucesso internacional, “De Amor e de Sombra”, obra que flerta com o que é chamado de “realismo mágico”, mesclando fantasia com realidade, sendo aclamado por público e crítica, selando definitivamente a sua reputação de escritora de estatura internacional. Nos anos noventa lança “Paula”, livro de memórias escrito para a sua filha que estava em coma devido a uma doença neurológica. “Paula” foi seu primeiro trabalho de não ficção e muitos críticos consideram essa a melhor obra da escritora. Em homenagem a filha, que veio a falecer em 1992, é criada a fundação Isabel Allende, dedicada a ajudar mulheres e crianças em situação de risco.

Morando nos Estados Unidos e ainda escrevendo, suas obras estão sempre nos primeiros lugares da lista dos livros mais vendidos nas Américas e na Europa. In the 1990s, she released “Paula”, a memoir written for her daughter, who was in a coma due to a neurological disease. “Paula” was her first non-fiction work and many critics consider it her best work. In honor of her daughter, who died in 1992, the Isabel Allende foundation was created, dedicated to helping women and children at risk.
