FEAR OF AIRPORTS I admit it, I despise flying. It is not a fear of crashing that gets to me, although I have been in a couple of hairy situations on commercial jets, it is the sheer unadulterated boredom. That and the fact my aircraft frequently take-off from airports that seem totally amazed that so many people have decided to fly that day. ‘Pandemonium’ is the word I would use. It is not just the airport authorities either. Why do large groups of passengers (or ‘customers’ as we now have to be called) always hover around the gate even though their boarding number has yet to be called? What is that about? They have reserved seats surely. Then there are those people with carry-on bags that are clearly too large; they seem a little like those folk with powerful cars and their approach to speed limits – ‘it doesn’t apply to me’. So whilst I love being able to visit different places, the process of getting there is often painful. With that in mind, stand up Hamad International Airport and take a bow. For my money, it is the best run airport in the region by quite a distance, with Qatar Airways being one of my favourite airlines. Therefore, I was interested to note that Qatar Airways recently celebrated the arrival of its 250th aircraft, an Airbus A350-900 from Toulouse, France, the latest addition to the group’s growing fleet of

passenger, cargo, and executive aircraft. This impressive milestone comes just 22 years after it began operations, and is testimony to the astonishing growth of an airline that has become a world leader, winning a multitude of awards, including the Skytrax World Airline of the Year accolade on four separate occasions. I have other favourite airports and airlines too, the former including Sky Harbour in Phoenix, Arizona, Genoa in Italy, and Vienna in Austria. Favourite airlines include Virgin Atlantic and KLM. Now you probably expect me to list the airports and airlines I either detest or refuse to fly either with or from. However, there simply is not the space. It would take quite a few pages. Suffice to say that most of them are great advertisements for staying at home. However, I will give a nod to one airline, since it has been out of business for some considerable time – British Caledonian. We were set to land in Nice, France. The approach seemed smooth enough, but when we hit the tarmac I was not entirely sure whether we had landed or been shot down. Then a voice came over the PA: “I apologise for the landing, the pilot will now take over.”

ASHGHAL BEGINS EXCAVATION OF MESAIMEER OUTFALL TUNNEL Qatar public works authority Ashghal has commenced excavation of a 10km outfall tunnel, as part of the Mesaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall project, started in May 2018, to provide a solution for the discharge of surface and storm water in the country. The tunnel will be excavated at a depth of 15m below the seabed and about 3.7m in diameter. The excavation will

be carried out using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that utilises the Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) technique and is designed to operate in a range of ground conditions in Qatar, which is important considering the variable geology along the tunnel. The second phase of the project includes a pumping station with 10 pumps and auxiliary facilities. The pumping

station will be located at the end of Mesaimeer Tunnel, south of Hamad International Airport, and will operate at a capacity of 19.7mÂł per second. The project is intended to decrease the surface water level and reduce pumping costs in construction projects around the country, as well as preserving the foundations of buildings and reducing land subsidence due to rain.

ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY TO BUILD NEW £100 MILLION CAMPUS IN QATAR The University of Aberdeen, based in Scotland, UK, has drawn up plans to build a new purpose-built, £100million campus in Al Daayan, near Doha, Qatar. The investment in the new campus by Al Faleh Group (AFG) for Education and Academic Services, the university’s partner in the project, represents the second phase of the group’s partnership with the university. The 50,000m² campus will provide ample space for plans to expand the range of programmes offered by the university, which will include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, medical sciences, law, and politics and international relations. University of Aberdeen principal, Professor George Boyne, said that the plan for the development of the new campus is a ‘milestone’ for the university: “The new campus in Al Daayan builds on the success of the initial phase of our partnership with AFG, which, since its launch in 2017, has attracted over 400 students to our existing campus in Doha to study our renowned range of business programmes.”

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON ROAD CORRIDOR PROJECT IN QATAR Work has begun on Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, a 25km road project in Qatar that runs from Hamad International Airport to Umm Lekhba Interchange (known as Landmark Interchange) on Doha Expressway, coinciding with the celebrations of Kuwait’s National Day. The Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor is the first in Qatar to be called a ‘corridor’ instead of a road due to its importance

and the specifications of its unique construction and recognition of Kuwait’s support. The corridor is expected to be completed in 2021, and will include the first cable-stayed bridge in Qatar, in addition to the country’s largest intersection, longest bridge, and deepest and longest bi-directional tunnel. The new corridor will include several multi-level interchanges

too, which will relieve traffic on Doha Expressway, provide smooth traffic flow between south and north of Doha, and reduce travel time by up to 70%. It will also provide a direct connection to Hamad International Airport as well as a link to 15 major expressways and ring roads to serve economic, commercial, health and education facilities across Doha.

THE FACE OF A NATION

Aided by the engagement of world-renowned architects, Qatar’s architectural landscape has experienced many positive changes over the past decade, with the latest structures arising in Doha being influenced by both Qatar’s national identity and its futuristic ambitions. This has meant that the nation has become renowned for its iconic landmarks. Recently, Qatar’s National Library hosted renowned architects from Qatar and across the world in a panel discussion, ‘Architecture as the Face of a Nation’, to discuss the role that cultural institutions play in defining and conveying national identity to local and global

audiences. The discussion featured Rem Koolhaas, the Library’s architect; Jean Nouvel, architect of the National Museum of Qatar; Jacques Herzog, a famous Swiss architect; Ibrahim Jaidah, a Qatari architect and the founding father of the Arab Engineering Bureau; and Ben van Berkel, a Dutch architect, Founder and Principal architect of the architectural practice United Work Studio. “The architecture of the library is an instrumental feature which has allowed for the space to be adapted in multiple ways to suit the needs of our visitors and patrons,” said Dr Sohaie Wastawy, Executive Director

ARABIAN MEP WINS AL BAKER HOTEL TOWERS CONTRACT IN QATAR Arabian MEP Contracting, part of the Al Malki Holding Group, has won a contract for work on Al Baker Hotel Towers from the project’s main contractor, Redco - Almana. Under the deal, the company will carry out MEP works that include the conversion of two existing high-rise office buildings into two 103-storey, five-star hotel towers located at Al Dafna, West Bay, Doha, Qatar. The project comprises the extension of podium levels (ground floor, mezzanine, first floor and second floor) in both towers to create more space for leisure facilities (luxury spa opening toward an open-air swimming pool area, multiple F&B outlets, and a double-height lobby). The entire contract is scheduled for completion in 19 months.

Mohammed Ali Al-Malki, CEO of Arabian MEP, said: “Arabian MEP has won this contract after competing with a dozen MEP subcontractors. It’s not the price factor here, it is due to high level of expertise, our excellent track record, and our experience in completing several high-rise towers in Qatar, this includes the Lusail Com20 Tower, an ultra-modern commercial office tower located in the sophisticated Lusail City, and The Pearl Gateway Towers (Abraj Quartier), which overlook the Gulf waters and offer views of Doha’s West Bay and The Pearl along with direct access to the major cities, restaurants, and upcoming rail network.”

of the library. “The accessibility and flexibility of the building has enabled a variety of events, exhibitions and programmes, all with different shapes and forms. The innovative nature of the building has contributed to the new concept of how a library can be used and what it can offer, providing an ideal space for visitors to socialise, learn, and innovate together. The library represents an important element in Qatar’s aspirations for a knowledge-based society, and we are glad that our panellists highlighted this very important aspect at the event.”

TUNNELLING SOIL USED FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES RESEARCH THE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED IN COOPERATION WITH QATAR UNIVERSITY (QU), REPRESENTED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CENTER (ESC) AND THE CENTER FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS (CAM).

QATAR PROJECTS MAGAZINE 13

14 QATAR RAILWAYS CO The company had previously announced the commencement of research on the use of soil resulting from the tunnelling works carried out on the Doha Metro project for agricultural purposes. This was being done to discover solutions for developing agricultural resources and achieving food self-sufficiency in the State of Qatar in a sustainable manner. Over the past 12 months, the Environmental Science Center analyzed different soil samples from the rubble resulting from the Doha Metro tunnelling works, and conducted laboratory experiments that include soil enhancement in search of opportunities to produce various agricultural crops. Several joint meetings were organized with QU to stay abreast of the project’s latest developments. Commenting on this ambitious project, Ajlan Eid Al Enazi, Chief of Strategies and Business Development at Qatar Rail, said: “As a result of the tunneling works conducted on the Doha Metro project, we now have a massive quantity of soil. Consequently, we at Qatar Rail thought to look into the best means to benefit from it; and in cooperation with Qatar University we decided to conduct a joint research project. The research efforts conducted came to fruition as the soil proved usable for agricultural purposes. We are currently working on expanding this study to benefit from its results in reality. Hence, Qatar Rail’s projects have contributed to Qatar’s efforts to achieve sustainability, not only by developing a sustainable means of transport, but by providing various other benefits from all aspects of this project.” The soil-testing results revealed a vast similarity in the mineral and physical composition of the natural soil used in local farms in the country. The research team in charge of the project revealed that the soil can be successfully used in agriculture after mixing it with natural soil conditioners in various ratios. To obtain those results, the team cultivated various plants used as pasturages such as clovers and millets. Commenting on the research, Professor Mariam Ali Al Maadeed, Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies at Qatar University, stated: “We were very pleased to cooperate with Qatar Rail on this aspiring project that will contribute massively to finding long-term solutions for developing agricultural resources. Thanks to the distinctive research capabilities of Qatar University and its accredited technologies, we were able to find use for the tunnelling soil, and we hope to see the tangible results of this research in reality.” “Achieving self-sufficiency in agricultural production in the State of Qatar is one of the most important future goals of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment,” Sheikh Doctor Faleh Bin Nasser Al Thani, Assistant Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs and Fisheries at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment said. “In light of the results of the soil testing, we look forward to working closely with both Qatar Rail and Qatar University to establish a committee dedicated to the project and discuss the means of implementation, the allocation of lands and mass production. All of this is to contribute to building the capabilities of the local production of agricultural crops.” Qatar Rail seeks to work closely with the relevant authorities to find a way to translate this goal to reality. They will also explore the possibilities to rehabilitate unused land so that it can be used to produce agricultural crops, which would cover local consumption and possibly allow for future agricultural exports.

First opening its doors for business in Turkey in 1989, Samko grew quickly, moving into Romania, Russia, and 15 years ago, Qatar. The company opened a branch in Doha when the founders realised that there was a need for a firstclass engineering company that could cope with the development and vision of Qatar. Samko has undertaken more than 18 major projects in Qatar to date, with two of them being completed ahead of schedule prior to the 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006 - the Beverley Hills Tower and the Movenpick Hotel. In 2012, Burj Qatar, one of Samko’s prestigious projects in Doha, was presented with ‘The Best Tall Building in the Middle East and North Africa’ award by the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. More recently, Samko has handed

over two projects to clients: The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa, where its scope of works comprised design, material supply, installation, testing and commissioning of MEP works, and Milaha Logistics City, where it provided material supply, installation, testing and commissioning of MEP works. World Cup Samko is currently working on two prominent and important projects in Qatar, both of them being constructed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. 26 QATAR PROJECTS MAGAZINE

For 22 years, Arabian MEP has been a part of the Qatari landscape, introducing its air-conditioning expertise to the marketplace in 1997. A part of Al Malki Group Holding, which has diversified interests in the fields of construction, engineering, real estate, and trading, the company has worked on some exciting projects in Qatar, cementing its position as one of the top MEP contractors in the region - a position borne out by its Grade A rating. It has worked across the commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors, providing its service to tower and office developments, stadium and sport complexes, hospitals, hotels, schools, and shopping malls. Amongst the many prestigious projects Arabian MEP has completed are Hamad Medical New Hospital complex (mechanical works with M/s Hyundai Engineering), hundreds of substation MEP works with M/s Siemens/ ABB/L&T and other main contractors, Rotana 5-star hotels with Gulf Contracting

Company, and many other buildings and infrastructure projects with single contract values up to QR350 million. Arabian MEP has expanded rapidly over the years, delivering exceptional performance and earning a reputation as a highly dependable specialist MEP contractor in Qatar. It was presented with a prestigious Construction Week Award in 2016 for ‘Sub-Contractor of the Year’. Ensuring Quality Workmanship Arabian MEP is focused primarily on MEP sub-contract works through main contractors, as well as direct/nominated MEP contracts for clients, from high-rise towers, hospitals and 5-star hotels through to malls and other high value/complex building projects, and infrastructure works. The company takes complete responsibility for mechanical – HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire-fighting systems, electrical power, lighting, ELV (CCTV, fire alarms, BMS, access control, room management systems, etc. Once the

contract is signed, Arabian MEP starts with the planning of MEP activities in line with the baseline programme of the project. It has qualified, experienced planning engineers to handle this part of the project life-cycle in coordination with its project managers and other professionals. Next, it begins detailed engineering (shop drawings based on design/IFC drawings, material submittals, method statements, etc.) and then comes the execution of works. The company has a team of Qatar Civil Defence and Electricity Authority approved Grade A and B engineers to supervise and execute the works, fully complying to project specifications, authority requirements, international and local standards, and to the full satisfaction of the client. Arabian MEP also deploy a team of qualified and experienced QA/ QC engineers and HSE engineers to ensure health, safety and quality of all works. After handing over of the project, the company’s dedicated maintenance team are on-hand during the defect liability period.

ARABIAN MEP CONTRACTING 27 At the present time, Arabian MEP is nearing completion on the complete mechanical sub-contracting package for main contactor QDSBG, with the scope of works consisting of 32 buildings (barracks for soldiers, mosque, laundry, shops, etc), and associated infrastructure works. M/s KEO International is the project supervision consultants and M/s QPM is the project managers for the client M/s ISF (Internal Security Force, Ministry of Interior). Arabian MEP has deployed a team of 1,200 for this project during the peak time, which is now nearing completion with testing and commissioning in full swing. Financially Strong Arabian MEP’s client-base includes all major Qatari government agencies and blue-chip private clients that include major international contractors such as ABB, Siemens, Larsen & Toubro, Punj Lloyd, QDVC, Hochtief and Hyundai. Whoever the client and whatever the project, though, Arabian MEP QP ISSUE.pdf 3/25/19 adopts various industry best 1engineering

practices, such as work standardisation, stringent QA/QC procedures, off-site pre-fabrication in factory-controlled environment, inspection prior to site delivery, multiple inspections at various stages of installation, testing and commissioning. Moreover, its duct manufacturing facility is the biggest in Qatar, with the ability to produce special anti-microbial coated HVAC ducts required for hospital operation theatres and laboratories. In addition, Arabian MEP has an electrical panel manufacturing facility to fabricate/assemble switchboards as per project requirements, approved by Kahramaa in collaboration with M/s ABB. It is also important to point out that Arabian MEP is one of very few companies in Qatar to remain financially strong and honour its payment commitments to all employees and suppliers. This is largely thanks to its policy of re-investing previously earned profits (retained earnings) back into the business, which 9:05 AM has given a huge financial leverage.

part of the ISO process and its ongoing commitment to periodically review its performance. This is testament to the fact that its business comes primarily from existing satisfied clients and through repeat orders.

Working Towards a Common Goal Business is good for Arabian MEP in the early months of 2019, with the company expecting the market to continue to grow in the years ahead, with current projects being accelerated to complete on time for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Qatar Vision 2030. Many tenders are being issued for construction of hotel and leisure, school and infrastructure projects, which will help Qatari companies to increase their market share. Arabian MEP attracts new clients by providing high performance facility operations, which are designed to improve productivity and considerably reduce energy consumption, as well as operational cost. The company always strives hard to work together as ‘one team’ towards one common goal of successful completion of the project within specified time and cost to the highest quality and safety standards. It will come as no surprise, therefore, keepArabian MEP received a healthy average of 90% from its recent client feedback survey for 2017, which was

Investing in the Future Currently the competition in the Qatari market is purely price driven, and Arabian MEP is approaching the current market cautiously simply because projects are being taken at lower than cost, which the company believes is not sustainable in the long-term. However, Arabian MEP is already investing in expanding its state-ofthe-art factories in the new industrial area to support the Qatar Vision in localising industries, in this instance airconditioning equipment, ducts, and panels. This investment is also designed to help the company prepare for upcoming mega projects associated with Qatar milestones.
