LIVING FOR TODAY As a species, we have become more and more obsessed with the future and how evermore invasive technology will change our lives for the better. But as we all know, tomorrow never comes – when the day arrives that we are calling ‘tomorrow’, we will call that day ‘today’ and a different day will be called tomorrow. So no,‘mindfulness’ is not just a fad, it is actually the only way one can live an enjoyable life, by being here in the ‘now’. However, the past should never be forgotten, as it often informs the future, in addition to providing us with much-needed roots. That is why it was recently good to discover that Qatar Museums (QM) and UCL Qatar have unearthed the earliest Islamic period site in Qatar in an historic discovery in the country’s northwest. Researchers have identified that the settlement dates to the later Sassanian period, between 538 and 670 CE, with the architectural features still in place today traceable back to the Umayyad period of 661-750 CE. Since 2016, the project has centred on the archaeological study of Meleiha and Umm al-Ma’, near Zubarah. In spite of this, it was it was at the excavation of Yoghbi that the team uncovered Qatar’s earliest

Islamic period settlement. Amongst the items found were ceramics from between the seventh and eighth centuries and fragments of glass, metals, stone vessels and fishing tools. The discoveries at Yoghbi are noteworthy because they contradict earlier academic belief that the occupation of the Gulf in the early Islamic period is linked to the peak of trade with the Indian Ocean, which was brought about by the foundation of Baghdad in 762 CE and Siraf around 800 CE. This discovery is vital in helping to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Qatar; it is also a timely reminder that perceived wisdom is not always correct. Moreover, it reminds us that we are all living during one small period of time, infinitesimal in the great scheme of things, and it is of the utmost importance that we live for today, whilst simultaneously building a future for the next generation and helping our fellow man whenever and wherever we can.

Umm Al Houl Power 19 The project partners encompass some of the biggest names in the industry, with local companies leading 70% of the bulk, and foreign companies covering the remaining 30%. They include Qatar Electricity and Water Company, K1 Energy (Mitsubishi Corporation and JERA J/V), Qatar Petroleum, and Qatar Foundation. There to Take the Challenge UHP is a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) with both thermal and Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination. This mix has allowed the design of the plant to be highly optimised and, at the same time, have high flexibility in terms of water production. In earlier plants, where there was only thermal desalination, it would get extremely difficult during the winter months to maintain high water production when there was very low power generation. As with all projects of this size and scope, there were a number of challenges to navigate. Perhaps the most obvious of these was that UHP had to be completed in less than 36 months, so right from the start the pressure was on.

The diplomatic blockade of Qatar by its neighbours during the peak construction period was another major challenge, as some of the key procurement was coming from GCC countries. Happily, this was mitigated by quicker decisionmaking, excellent planning, and rescheduling of works to give time for changing the procurement sources. Having Samsung C&T and Hitachi Zosen as UHP’s major Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors helped enormously, thanks to their broad leverage and far-reaching business network with the major suppliers. An EPC contract had been awarded to Samsung C&T to construct the entire facility. An EPC contract was also awarded to Hitachi Zosen, which constructed the water desalination plant. Nexans was selected to provide 575km of power cables, which included Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) cables, whilst Doosan Hydro Technology was awarded a contract for the water treatment and wastewater treatment system. Control systems for the power and desalination plants were supplied by Yokogawa Electric

Corporation’s subsidiaries Yokogawa Electric Korea and Yokogawa Solution Service Corporation, whilst highpressure valves were furnished by HP Valves. ABB was contracted to provide turnkey substations to transfer the electricity generated to the grid. The substations will be at 400kV and 220kV/132kV, equipped with gas-insulated switchgear, as well as advanced control and protection, and telecommunication systems. The design and construction of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination plants was carried out by Spanish company Acciona Agua, which will also be responsible for their operation and maintenance At the peak construction period, there were 15,000 workers on-site; this was a further huge challenge in terms of maintaining a very high level of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) standards. There was a vast commitment from the top management to achieve this goal with the direct involvement and weekly walk downs by the UHP CEO, Jamal Alkhalaf. A highly professional approach and zero tolerance to noncompliance resulted in 69 million man-hours without a single major incident or accident.

Umm Al Houl Power 21 A Unique Facility With regard to the expansion project, UHP was awarded by the off-taker, Kahramaa, an additional water capacity of 61.45 Million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD) using RO technology. The total desalination water capacity at UHP will now be 198 MIGD, which makes it one of the largest desalination facilities in the world. The plant, located in Al Wakra, 15km south of Doha, is based on the same design as the existing RO plant, with Acciona Agua as the main subcontractor. The design of the expansion, though, is genuinely unique, due to the fact that there is no additional seawater intake facility being built. Instead, the seawater required for the new RO plant is sourced from the power plant cooling water system. This means that, as there are no offshore works, there is no environmental impact due to this expansion project, which is a fast track development that is expected to be completed by April 2021. Sustainability and environmental awareness are of prime concern on this expansion project, with UHP following national and international guidelines in order to meet world-class standards. Primarily, this revolves around the Executive By-Law for the Environment Protection Law, Decree Law No. 30 (2002), which outlines the requirements for protecting the environment against pollution and promoting sustainable development. Moreover, the Equator Principles (EP), which represents a framework for project financing and set the requirements for projects to adopt the International Finance Corporation Performance Standards (IFCPS), have been utilised, too.The IFCPS are, in addition, supplemented by the IFC Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines.

Umm Al Houl Power 25 PLANT OVERVIEW Power UHP is regarded as a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP), with a configuration of two blocks in a 3 x 3 x 2 setting, which means that it generates electricity utilising two different power cycles. First are the Gas Turbines (GT) running in Brayton cycle, which are making use of natural gas as fuel to produce thermal energy and convert it to kinetic energy to be able to generate power. The Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) process is the second part of the equation, which uses the waste of heat from the hot exhaust gas to boil the demineralised water. Last but not least, the Steam Turbine (ST) running in Ranking cycle uses the steam produced from the heat recovery steam generator in order to determine kinetic energy where the power can be generated. The plant comprises six units of Siemens gas turbine (SGT5-4000F), connected upstream to six generators, with each generator producing 260 MW/h. As for the Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), there are six units manufactured by Nooter Erickson that connected

downstream to the Gas Turbine (GT), producing steam and feeding the steam turbine. The plant also has four units of Siemens Steam Turbines (SST5-4000), which are connected upstream to four generators, each of which generates 240 MW/h. All electricity generated by the plant is planned to be transmitted to the Kahramaa network via 400KV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS). Water Seawater is taken through five raisers with a length fixed at 2.8km, and the seawater is collected in the bay that is located in the seawater intake facility. Subsequently, 23 water pumps are provided in order to supply the plant. RO technology is provided by Acciona Agua, and is designed to remove the suspended particles by air filtration, while additional particles are removed by an ultra-filtration process. As a direct result of this process, 60 MIGD of permeate water is produced. The plant has five units of Multi-Stage Flashing (MSF) manufactured by Hitachi Zosen, which will produce 76.5 MIGD of distillate water. It is designed to evaporate the seawater through the use of low pressure steam extracted from Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) or Steam Turbine (ST) and intersect with the

seawater that is supplied by the heat recovery section for its transformation into distillate water. Permeate and distillate water are collected and transported to the Potable Water Treatment (PWT) section so as to add minerals. On account of this process, permeate and distillate will be transformed into potable water, which is kept in four reservoirs with a length of 15m and diameter of 126m. It is then dispatched to Kahramaa lines through eight pumps. However, the rejected water is collected in a seal pit to maintain the temperature, as well as to monitor the conductivity in order to meet the environmental specification of seawater and to avoid the damage of marine life. The plant will also include process and plant drainage systems, systems control, and data acquisition connection between facility, substations, control centres, and fuel supply systems. UHP is working towards an RO expansion that will increase the production of water to 61.5 million imperial gallons per day, which is equal to 280,000m3. Therefore, by 2021 the total production of water from the plant will be 198 million imperial gallons per day, making UHP the largest water production plant in the Middle East.

THE FUTURE DELIVERED

THE UMM AL HOUL INDEPENDENT WATER AND POWER (IWPP) PROJECT HAS BEEN A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT IN TRYING TIMES, AS THE CONSORTIUM LED BY SAMSUNG C&T HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THIS PROJECT (FACILITY D) ON TIME IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH UMM AL HOUL POWER, THE PROJECT OWNER AND DEVELOPER. The Samsung led consortium, which included Hitachi Zosen, has created a state-of-the-art asset utilising environmentally efficient technologies to provide a safe and reliable facility for future generations. The project has been brought on line progressively, with the waterplant contributing up to 60 million gallons of water per day as of June 2017, and 1612 MW of power being available from six gas turbine units in simple cycle operation mode since early August 2017. In June 2018, the second phase increased water production to 136 million gallons per day and power output to 2520 MW, enhancing the total power and water generating capacity in the State of Qatar by some 24% and 27% respectively. The Umm Al Houl IWPP project located some 15kms directly south of Doha, comprises of:

a. A power island with a total generating capacity of 2,520 MW, provided from six SGT4000-5F gas turbines, each coupled with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) feeding four SST-5 4000 steam turbines. The power island further includes three substations for power export to the Qatar grid, a fuel gas receiving station, seawater intake and discharge facility, potable water reservoirs,

balance of plant systems, and administrative facilities, including offices, warehousing, workshops and the like. b. Water island has a capacity to produce 136,000,000 gallons of drinking water per day, using two different desalination processes Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Multi Stage Flash (MSF) operating in parallel. This fast-track project had a very challenging schedule with both power and water island operations being intrinsically integrated and interdependent, which required the entire facility to be constructed, tested and commissioned within 33 months from the date of site access. The initial works entailed the excavation of large volumes of rock, mainly for the seawater intake structure, and the casting of more than 275,000m3 of reinforced concrete for the various structures, intake basin and buildings. Furthermore, in total more than 25kms of large diameter GRP pipes had to be laid offshore to supply the 300,000 tons of seawater needed every hour for the Power and Water Islands. Samsung C&T’s international experience and innovative construction techniques were essential to ensure that such a complex project could be realised with such a challenging schedule. Pre-cast concrete units were designed for structures and trenches, mechanical components were pre-fabricated where possible, and a dry method of working was developed for the installation of the cooling waterlines, extending nearly 2.8kms offshore.

In addition, simultaneous erection techniques were implemented particularly for the power block and the MSF structures, which necessitated that the labour force topped more than 14,000 during the peak erection period in 2017. Despite the magnitude of the workers on this optimised site, the safety record was exemplary; being testament to the rigorous implementation of the project policy that safety is paramount. This coupled with best practices and lessons learned from previous projects and the continuous monitoring of ongoing works through strict quality control were key factors in the success of the project. Samsung C&T has engineered, procured and constructed the entire power island, including the gas turbines, steam turbines and HRSGs, the seawater supply and discharge facilities, together with four large circular potable water reservoirs, each with a capacity of 34 million gallons, and the power evacuation system

through three gas-insulated substations at different power levels, 400kV, 220kV, and 132kV, with the latter two being handed over directly to Kahramaa. In the midst of the project, neighbouring countries to Qatar severed all diplomatic ties, closing all land borders with the state. This required Samsung to devise alternative routes and means of ensuring that disruption to materials to be imported would not adversely impact the completion of the project. Samsung, together with the employer, coordinated relentlessly with the relevant authorities during these challenging times to maintain the commitment to the end user Kahramaa and the people of Qatar to contribute power and water to the networks on time. From the commencement of the works on-site to the successful completion in June 2018, Samsung C&T worked tirelessly with Umm Al Houl Power and Kahramaa to realise the goal they set out to achieve,

working around the clock with nearly 70 million man-hours used to create this engineering feat. This project is a successful piece of the Qatar 2030 Vision and instrumental in the sustainable development of the country and supports the inaugural World Cup to be hosted in the Middle East in 2022. The Umm Al Houl Project is testament to what can be achieved when all the players converge as a team and are united in their ambition. Samsung C&T has successfully completed many large projects in the Middle East both in the power and infrastructure sectors and, building on this experience, expertise and customer focus, is determined to continue establishing its reputation as the foremost ‘trusted builder’ in the Middle East, servicing the needs of clients in a way that will protect and preserve the future for generations yet to come and contributing further to the Qatar 2030 Vision.

Arabian MEP Contracting has grown to become Qatar’s market leader in MEP construction industry, providing engineering excellence, superior installation works, and maintenance support to its growing army of valued clients, whilst delivering best practice in corporate governance and transparency. For 22 years,Arabian MEP has been a part of the Qatari landscape, introducing its air-conditioning expertise to the marketplace in 1997. A part of Al Malki Group Holding, which has diversified interests in the fields of construction, engineering, real estate, and trading, the company has worked on some exciting projects in Qatar, cementing its position as one of the top MEP contractors in the region - a position borne out by its Grade A rating. It has worked across the commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors, providing its service to tower and office developments, stadium and sport complexes, hospitals, hotels, schools, and shopping malls. Amongst the many prestigious projects Arabian MEP has completed are Hamad Medical New Hospital complex (mechanical works with M/s Hyundai Engineering), hundreds of substation MEP works with M/s Siemens/ABB/L&T and other main contractors, Rotana 5-star hotels with Gulf Contracting Company, and many other buildings and infrastructure projects with single contract values up to QR350 million. Arabian MEP has expanded rapidly over the years, delivering exceptional performance and earning a reputation as a highly

dependable specialist MEP contractor in Qatar. It was presented with a prestigious Construction Week Award in 2016 for ‘SubContractor of the Year’. Ensuring Quality Workmanship Arabian MEP is focused primarily on MEP sub-contract works through main contractors, as well as direct/nominated MEP contracts for clients, from high-rise towers, hospitals and 5-star hotels through to malls and other high value/complex building projects, and infrastructure works. The company takes complete responsibility for mechanical – HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire-fighting systems, electrical power, lighting, ELV (CCTV, fire alarms, BMS, access control, room management systems, etc. Once the contract is signed, Arabian MEP starts with the planning of MEP activities in line with the baseline programme of the project. It has qualified, experienced planning engineers to handle this part of the project life-cycle in coordination with its project managers and other professionals. Next, it begins detailed engineering (shop drawings based on design/IFC drawings, material submittals, method statements, etc.) and then comes the execution of works. The company has a team of Qatar Civil Defence and Electricity Authority approved Grade A and B engineers to supervise and execute the works, fully complying to project specifications, authority requirements,

Arabian MEP Contracting 31 international and local standards, and to the full satisfaction of the client. Arabian MEP also deploy a team of qualified and experienced QA/QC engineers and HSE engineers to ensure health, safety and quality of all works. After handing over of the project, the company’s dedicated maintenance team are on-hand during the defect liability period. At the present time, Arabian MEP is nearing completion on the complete mechanical sub-contracting package for main contactor QDSBG, with the scope of works consisting of 32 buildings (barracks for soldiers, mosque, laundry, shops, etc), and associated infrastructure works. M/s KEO International is the project supervision consultants and M/s QPM is the project managers for the client M/s ISF (Internal Security Force, Ministry of Interior). Arabian MEP has deployed a team of 1,200 for this project during the peak time, which is now nearing completion with testing and commissioning in full swing.

ISO process and its ongoing commitment to periodically review its performance. This is testament to the fact that its business comes primarily from existing satisfied clients and through repeat orders. Investing in the Future Currently the competition in the Qatari market is purely price driven, and Arabian MEP is approaching the current market cautiously simply because projects are being taken

at lower than cost, which the company believes is not sustainable in the long-term. However, Arabian MEP is already investing in expanding its state-of-the-art factories in the new industrial area to support the Qatar Vision in localising industries, in this instance air-conditioning equipment, ducts, and panels. This investment is also designed to help the company prepare for upcoming mega projects associated with Qatar milestones.

Financially Strong Arabian MEP’s client-base includes all major Qatari government agencies and blue-chip private clients that include major international contractors such as ABB, Siemens, Larsen & Toubro, Punj Lloyd, QDVC, Hochtief and Hyundai. Whoever the client and whatever the project, though, Arabian MEP adopts various industry best engineering practices, such as work standardisation, stringent QA/QC procedures, off-site pre-fabrication in factory-controlled environment, inspection prior to site delivery, multiple inspections at various stages of installation, testing and commissioning. Moreover, its duct manufacturing facility is the biggest in Qatar, with the ability to produce special anti-microbial coated HVAC ducts required for hospital operation theatres and laboratories. In addition, Arabian MEP has an electrical panel manufacturing facility to fabricate/assemble switchboards as per project requirements, approved by Kahramaa in collaboration with M/s ABB. It is also important to point out that Arabian MEP is one of very few companies in Qatar to remain financially strong and honour its payment commitments to all employees and suppliers. This is largely thanks to its policy of re-investing previously earned profits (retained earnings) back into the business, which has given a huge financial leverage. Working Towards a Common Goal Business is good for Arabian MEP in the early months of 2019, with the company expecting the market to continue to grow in the years ahead, with current projects being accelerated to complete on time for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Qatar Vision 2030. Many tenders are being issued for construction of hotel and leisure, school and infrastructure projects, which will help Qatari companies to increase their market share. Arabian MEP attracts new clients by providing high performance facility operations, which are designed to improve productivity and considerably reduce energy consumption, as well as operational cost. The company always strives hard to work together as ‘one team’ towards one common goal of successful completion of the project within specified time and cost to the highest quality and safety standards. It will come as no surprise, therefore, keepArabian MEP received a healthy average of 90% from its recent client feedback survey for 2017, which was part of the
