THE HONOUR IS OURS Happy New Year! 2018 marks the magazine’s eleventh year in print and thinking back at its humble beginnings, the team and I feel a collective surge of pride that Office Concept kept its place on newsstands despite the rise and fall of many a beloved print publication.

A

s the magazine expands its reach across Asia, we remain ever grateful to you, our loyal readers, as well as to the designers and industry personalities who have extended their unwavering support over the years. This has been nothing less than a team effort, which is why we acquired the habit of celebrating our collaborators in the magazine’s pages. Not merely a showcase of contemporary workplace and furniture design trends, Office Concept is, in essence, also a love letter to the people and products enlivening each issue. In this edition, the honour goes to AI Associates, one of Asia’s leading design studios, who I’d like to thank for participating in this issue. Headquartered in Singapore, this impressive firm has been making waves throughout Asia and beyond for award-winning office designs that boldly marry creativity and bureaucracy. Recent projects such as the Estee Lauder Companies’ sophisticated new office in Singapore or Uber Malaysia’s eclectically wrought headquarters set new industry benchmarks by optimising the spaces that house them and serving as reminders that details make all the difference. And speaking of little things that matter, may I ask our brand collaborators, furniture manufacturers and our readers to drop us a line of constructive feedback? Conceived as one of the main highlights of the Rockerfeller Dining Room in the Haus Konstruktiv museum in Zurich, the Alambre Chair is now turning heads as part of the Girsberger Collection. FOR STARTERS, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOURSELF AND ALSO ABOUT THE BIRTH OF AI ASSOCIATES? I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic School of Interior Architecture and Design with Merit. I was also awarded the prestigious Singapore Design Council Gold Medal for being the top graduate in the School of Design. This is a significant milestone for me because it set the path for me to pursue a career in the building and design industry. After graduation, I completed National Service and I was then hired by an international design firm specialising in corporate office interior design. Although I have a design background and relevant design qualifications, I started off doing quantity surveying and project management before taking on a designer role. This gave me the opportunity to understand the whole process of executing projects from design to project management as well as cost and quality control. Later on, these came in as necessary skillsets when I decided to start my own firm after 6 years of being in the industry and having won a few design awards. It was in August 2003 that I established AI Associates in Singapore. This company was incorporated as a one-stop shop that offers impressive, creative workspace design as well as quality construction services. Within the last couple of years, I am proud to see how much AI Associates has grown. Today, we have operations in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Myanmar and Cambodia. Moving forward, our vision is to have operations throughout Southeast Asia and China in the near future to better service our pool of multinational clients.


WHAT DISTINGUISHES AI ASSOCIATES FROM OTHER BUSINESSES IN YOUR CATEGORY? The distinguishing factor would be the level of service and creative designs generated by our pool of award-winning designers that we can provide for our multinational clientele. We are also able to leverage on our regional presence to facilitate better communications with clients that are looking to expand their operations in the region as all of our offices maintain the same level of design standards and quality that one will expect from a Singapore brand name. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR LINE OF WORK? Being able to create impressive and creative spaces that enhance the way people live, work and play! WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS’ BIGGEST CHALLENGE? The biggest challenge will be maintaining our high standards of first class design with quality construction as AI Associates begins its expansion plans into the rest of Southeast Asia. WHAT WAS THE “BIG BREAK” THAT HELPED AI ASSOCIATES GET RECOGNIZED? During the first year of operations, we submitted one of our projects for design competition. We were awarded one of the top three positions which helped us garnered quite a lot of attention and publicity. The client was very impressed and gave us a great video testimonial commending us on the outstanding work done for their offices.

WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY AT WORK ENTAIL? At this stage, with all our offices and expansion plans to the other regions, a typical day will see me checking and replying all my emails from all my offices. For example, responding to all chat groups and updating myself on the progress of all the ongoing projects. There would also be Skyping or conference calls with my directors in each of the offices to make sure things are on track along with reviewing and quality control on some of the design work for submissions as well. HOW INVOLVED ARE YOU IN EACH PROJECT THAT AI ASSOCIATES TAKES ON? I try to get involved in the beginning as much as possible by sitting in during the design and critic sessions before each design proposals are submitted to clients and monitoring them to make sure they are of the highest quality. Thereafter I leave it to the capable hands of the individual team leader to execute the work. I will also occasionally follow up on the progress and conduct site visits. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN INFLUENCING THE FUTURE OF WORKSPACE DESIGN? I think one of the most influencing factors for the future of workspace design will be the communication tools that are forever changing the way we communicate. The workspace is essentially just a space to facilitate that and as communication tools evolve and get more and more advanced, the physical office space could one day be obsolete and become just a part of the space that we live and play in.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? I have strong interest and passion in arts since young and doing well in the latter gave me the confidence to take up design studies which I chose by chance. I also felt that it will be an enjoyable process to go through, instead of the more conventional courses. It was also about the fascination with craft, form and colours as well as eventually finding the opportunity to apply them in the real world.

AS A FEMALE INTERIOR DESIGNER, WHAT SPECIFIC CHALLENGES, IF ANY, HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? I think gender is a non-issue in interior design. I have seldom encountered direct difficulties and I am unaware of interior design challenges that are specific to female designers. I believe this is testament to the maturity of the industry, which respects design competence above gender.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE CREATIVITY AND APPLY IT IN YOUR CAREER? Creativity and design is an essential need. It plays a prominent role in human affairs and everyday things which affect us sociologically, psychologically and emotionally. My design application focuses on aesthetic quality, which expresses meaning that is integral to its usefulness. It also brings about new experiences and fulfils the individual and society’s needs. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MISPERCEPTION ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGNERS? There are several misperceptions but the most common one is that of interior designers being decorators. I have met many professionals who perceive IDs as home designers and do not understand the value of interior design, which also emphasizes on the quality of life and social responsibility issues that are beyond aesthetic requirements. WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION, AND HOW DO YOU BEGIN THE DESIGN PROCESS? Inspiration can come from the most obscure sources such as the natural landscape, craft, new innovations, market trend and current issue or even from design communication. The key is to be aware of the surroundings we reside in. I tend to be more aware of my thoughts when my mind is relaxed and free. It also helps to read and see more and not limit one’s interest to only design related issues. Communication with the end-user is

definitely a key role in understanding their preferred condition and behaviour patterns within the environment. A detailed analysis of the design issues combined with meaningful inspirations can lead to new ideas. WHICH WORKSPACE PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN PARTICULAR TO DATE? Some of the works to highlight in recent years would be ELC and IATA. It has been a great journey with clients, colleagues, consultants and contracting team to achieve a shared vision that ultimately exceeded users’ expectation. HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF WORK? I believe that design has no boundaries and in that sense, there really is no one good proven formula. All approaches are a means to an end, which would be creating the ideal environment and a meaningful experience having considered the client’s needs, values, timeframe and budget, etc. As a professional, we know there is always more than one creative solution to our design challenges. Every project is approached differently, depending on its key objective and goals. IF YOU WEREN’T AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, WHAT JOB DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE? Maybe an artist or even fashion designer but that’s pretty much hypothetical. The important thing is I continue to enjoy my work.

leek with a touch of contemporary elegance, the Estee Lauder Companies (ELC)’s new head office in UE Square, Singapore is a perfect blend of collaborative spaces, a productive environment and a distinctive aesthetic that’s uniquely ELC. At 51,200 sqft, spanning over three floors of vibrant workspaces, AI Associates has successfully captured the essence of the brands’ image in a stylish manner while ensuring superb spatial efficiency. The design intent was to develop a warm, conducive, innovative and productive office environment with a unique Estee Lauder corporate identity. Based on the client’s requirements, the office should also offer ample space to house both current and new headcount as well as enhancing the Estee Lauder brand. Within an open plan layout which splits into two wings, the key spaces have been strategically configured

to maximize the floor space. The public areas which consist of reception, waiting lounge, staff lounge, corporate retail store, meeting and training facilities are located on level 2 while the office workspace and support facilities occupy level 3 and level 4 of UE Square. To reflect ELC’s identity, a strong contemporary design concept enhanced with local accents is used to bring out the company’s image in a sophisticated way. Starting with the reception area, a pristine palette of off-whites contrasted by bright blues creates a polished appearance that is cosy and welcoming. The area is open and free-flowing, accommodating up to 20 visitors at the same time. There’s also direct access to the meeting facilities including a new electronic system which enhances the workflow and allows easy access for visitors. Designed to house large groups of people, this lounge serves as a unifying space to encourage interaction among ELC employees while also catering to the company’s less formal activities like casual meetings and staff gatherings. To further promote social interaction between staff members on different floors and departments, the upper floors were converted into secondary collaborative spaces. According to AI Associates, the design team aimed for a higher standard of workspaces so that the office is better utilized to ensure higher productivity. For instance, there are hot desk areas implemented within the office

to provide efficient workspaces for staff to carry out diverse duties. As part of AI Associates’ Green Mark practices, the firm reused existing furniture and accessories, creatively turning them around to fit into the design concept. Throughout the design process, AI Associates worked in tandem with ELC’s different departments as well as the ELC Steering & Advisory team. Overall, AI Associated wanted the design of the office to distinctively reflect ELC’s workplace culture which revolves around fostering a unique spirit of teamwork, innovation, passion, and more importantly, on the emphasis of ELC’s mission to be a class above the rest.

t Luxottica’s Singapore head office in Millenia Tower, a bright and vibrant atmosphere takes over, thanks to AI Associates’ clever interpretation of open spaces enhanced with unique details. Throughout its key spaces, an interesting interplay of form and interior features gives this office a signature look that distinctively portrays the luxury eyewear brand. Upon alighting from the lift, visitors are ushered into the reception area via a hallway decked in a series of curved cut-outs which resemble spectacle lens. A strong minimalist appearance is achieved here using sleek white panels with bright blue lighting underneath. area. Blue backlit LED lights have also been included to accentuate these elements. Adjacent to the reception area is the showroom, a light-filled space designed to put the products in the best light. The entire space is kept clean and spacious with different luxury eyewear collections adorning the walls. At the side wall, windows bring in natural daylight, giving the showroom a more welcoming ambience. Moving on from the showroom, the after sales service area is done up in a similar vibrant manner. From here, the office opens up to the main workspaces where desks and workstations are strategically configured in a collaborative and flexible manner. The general staff workspaces are grouped in clusters using angled desk systems, anchored by cosy collaboration pods. open walkways that link key areas from the reception to the back office,” says AI Associates. “We also ensured the layout has comfortable free-flowing circulation by using classic 120-degree workstations to break up the rigidity of the typical rectangular workbenches.” The office’s unmistakable warm and welcoming ambience is also largely due to its vibrant interior furnishing. While the palette is kept absolutely clean with predominantly neutral tones, there are also pops of colour here and there to maintain visual interest. For instance, doors to the managers’ and directors’ rooms are painted in bright blues, oranges and reds, matching the blue partitions at the workstations. To create a fresher environment, the main workspace also features green plants and grass-like carpets. Over at the breakout rooms and library, chalkboard walls and timber details

nown as the largest shipping and transportation company listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), NOL requested for a distinctive design approach to reflect their new corporate direction when they moved to their new headquarters at The Metropolis, a Grade A office building located in Buona Vista, Singapore. AI Associates was shortlisted from a pool of potential designers as their preferred design consultants for this important move. According to the design team, the main challenge was to find ways to accommodate a large number of employees within a high-rise building - this was something new to NOL because their previous office was in a standalone building and their employees were accustomed to having their own building for the last few decades. For this new office, NOL wanted to consolidate its departments and operations all under one roof. “We worked very closely with the steering committee from NOL to engage the employees from the design of the space to the construction process,” AI Associates says. “All were invited to design workshops. They were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite theme for the breakout areas in the office and also for the workstations design and colour schemes. They were also briefed on the new transport routes, food courts and shopping areas around the new office. This was the change process to slowly engage and integrate the staff into the new environment.”

The open discussions proved to be a fruitful one, resulting in a state-of-the-art office space that exudes strong aesthetics and a definitive human touch. Spread across four floors of the building from Level 14 to 17, the new office features different spaces configured around a central lobby. There are designated departments on each floor, differentiated into private workspaces and public or social spaces. What’s outstanding is the distinctive and diverse atmosphere within the office where a combination of modern contemporary styles, corporate feel and fun and funky spaces is created to fit different workplace activities. At Level 14, the lift lobby opens up to the bright and sleek reception area. Curvilinear features highlighted by the overhead lights are complemented by a cosy lounge area overlooking the city skyline views. From here, the space leads towards the main office areas as well as the training and breakout rooms. The main workspaces across all the four floors share a similar welcoming style to encourage higher productivity. While certain areas have to be minimized, AI Associates ensured that the overall outcome is still spacious and conducive - thanks to the integration of more collaborative spaces and new technology. in size to accommodate NOL’s expansion plans. More meeting rooms and flexible meeting spaces as well as phone booths were also incorporated as a means to increase staff productivity. To further promote communication and interaction among employees, breakout spaces were created on every floor. Designed as fun and functional spaces, these rooms take on a fresh and vibrant theme complemented by colourful furnishing. The breakout areas also double as townhall spaces. They have all been equipped with AV equipment to allow all four floors to tune in to the person speaking on one of the floors. Amidst the myriad of functional and vibrant features, a neutral palette with strategic applications of woody hues and timber detailing elegantly wraps up the design concept with a soothing yet stylish appeal. In line with AI Associates’ Green Mark practices, the design team also reused some of NOL’s existing furniture and artworks which were still in very good condition. Throughout the office, the design of the spaces successfully brings out a cosy corporate ambience that’s sophisticated yet current.

pon relocating their office to Mapletree Business City in Singapore, IATA (the International Air Transport Association) requested the design of their new office to adopt a contemporary concept that helps to improve space efficiency and work style in accordance to IATA’s global office concept while catering to their increased headcount. In response to IATA’s requirements, AI Associates created a flexible configuration across 31,764 sqft of office space which efficiently accommodates an open concept office layout as well as IATA’s future spatial requirements. Throughout the office, the key areas which consist of the reception, staff lounge, town hall and training areas, unanimously convey an innovative, dynamic and modern image of IATA. With the incorporation of sleek details and modern features, the designers have also given the office a definitive contemporary appeal; one which expresses a sense of diversity amidst a cosy corporate atmosphere. To start, the reception area is designed to enhance IATA’s visual identity via different spatial layers including the corporate branding, colour palette, corporate display elements, aviation-themed graphics and room name conventions. These are effectively translated into a series of creative details, resulting in a sleek white minimalist outlook. For a touch of contrast, subtle features are

applied to the signage wall as well as the reception counter to create an innovative 3-dimensional effect. The reception area connects to the collaborative waiting lounge, meeting facilities and town hall while providing direct access to the main workspaces. To ensure an optimum working environment, the interior design concept eliminates barriers and signs of status and individual hierarchy in favour of a common working area used by all. While the huddle and focus rooms are enclosed, walled-in offices are eliminated - managers’ workspaces as well as selected meeting zones are defined using only clear glazed screen for optimal transparency. The design also allows room for rapid change of operational structures without the need to re-design work places. Throughout the space, comfort and flexibility encourage communication, collaboration and spontaneous interaction. Employees are offered the choice to work in areas most suited to the type of task at hand. By giving them the option of a more isolated area to work in when they need to concentrate better or when they need to conduct confidential discussions, the addition of these spaces contributes to higher productivity and performance. All this makes IATA a great place to work in, boosting morale and strengthening the company’s community-driven work culture.

To foster more opportunities for staff interaction, the town hall and staff lounge are designed to offer a common area for employees to come together. The town hall which serves as a gathering space can be extended into a training zone and other corporate purposes. Over at the staff lounge, this space is created as the heart of the office with a well-appointed café theme to unify the different work zones and accommodate small and large groups. Designed to motivate users to get together or meet by chance, this area features a library corner, games area, bar counter, high communal dining, modular furniture setting, soft seating area and even a fully-equipped kitchen. To optimize the experience of space, a series of interventions are also incorporated. This includes

abundant natural light; different work areas that accommodate diverse needs, details that increase comfort level and sense of belonging; zones to reduce stress and enhance a sense of well-being as well as facilities that increase connection and communication. To bring out the aesthetic of these spaces, selected sustainable materials are employed as well as a selection of high quality materials including quartz stone, glass treatment, eco panels, carpet, vinyl flooring and laminate finishes. These features are kept in harmony with the main palette to ensure that the design elements do not overwhelm or dilute IATA’s branding which leans towards a modern minimalist outlook.

n Uber Malaysia’s newly refurbished headquarters at The Vertica, Bangsar South City, there’s plenty of room for collaboration, communication and creative thinking - thanks to the open plan layout that accommodates different functional spaces in a dynamic manner. This reflects Uber’s brand identity which revolves around a sense of dynamic evolution, innovation and modern technology. Upon arriving at Uber’s headquarters, the central lift lobby leads towards two entrances situated opposite one another - one for employees and another for guests which takes them directly to the reception area. Elegantly done up in a monotone palette, the reception area takes on a contemporary look with a long sleek counter anchoring the space. What stands out is the waiting area which features a set of circular seating with a cantilevered coffee table hanging down from the exposed ceiling. This furniture piece also comes complete with a metal route map. On the side, there is a feature wall displaying different local car number plates - a smart way to subtly introduce Uber’s core business in Malaysia as a technology company that owns the mobile application. From the reception, the space opens out to the meeting rooms which employ the use of cement finishes and different textures, further leading visitors into the main office area.

Spread out across the 11,115 sqft office are clusters of workstations flanked by a series of meeting rooms, collaboration areas and “hush rooms” - quiet spots for employees to chill out or contemplate on ideas. “Collaboration zones are provided evenly throughout the office space,” says the design team from AI Associates. “We incorporated various furniture pieces to give these areas a unique look.” While the main work areas take on a more corporate look with functional features taking priority, collaboration zones are designed in a vibrant way to encourage engagement and foster creative communication. One of these collaborative spaces is distinctively designed with a sky lounge concept complemented by an oceanic theme. Placed next to the window, the space offers panoramic views of the city skyline. For the meeting rooms, these spaces are configured adjacent to the main office area for easy accessibility. Designed along the core building, the meeting rooms take advantage of the natural light streaming in, affording a cosy yet sophisticated place to conduct discussions or conferences. In these spaces, the designers incorporated different textures and patterns such as corrugated metal sheets and tiles with cultural motifs to introduce a touch of local vibe. Additionally, the breakout area and pantry are kept open and versatile so that they can be converted into a “town hall” for informal gatherings when required. Throughout the office, spaces are designed to be as open as possible so that employees can easily move about between one area to the next. Doing away with walls or physical boundaries effectively encourages communication and synergy between business units. To infuse the office environment with personality and visual interest, a selection of unique materials, unconventional furniture and interior details are used. global leader in delivering ICT solutions, Swedish telecommunications brand Ericsson requested for their offices in Malaysia to be consistent in terms of reflecting their brand identity and Scandinavian tradition. This is clearly evident in their new head office which was relocated from Cyberjaya, Sepang to The Pinnacle, one of the latest commercial buildings with GBI and MSC status at Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya. At 50,000sqft, Ericsson’s new head office features an open plan layout with dynamic spatial configuration. AI Associates wanted the space, which includes two floors of office space, to have an organic flow that encourages communication and breaks the conventional typology of corporate offices. For this office, it was also imperative that the interior design has a visible connection to Ericsson’s energetic work culture. This can be identified through the implementation of Ericsson’s corporate colours and branding

Towards one side, cosy clusters of work desks are set in an organized manner in the open office layout, punctuated by lounge-like areas that employees can use for discussions and brainstorming sessions. These features within the open office concept offer employees a less structured environment to work in while encouraging collaboration and interaction between staff. There’s somewhat a striking contrast between the formal and informal spaces, and the choice of materials and colours reflect that. For instance, for the workstations, neutral tones and clean lines are used while in the informal meeting pods, bright colours and timber detailing are employed to create a visually appealing environment.

Additionally, meeting rooms are given a unique and imaginative touch - each of them is named after a different city in Malaysia or Sweden. Brief stories of these cities are also displayed on the walls of the meeting rooms. Ericsson’s distinctive interior style can also be observed at the Ericsson 5G Showcase and Excellent Centre designed by AI Associates at Anjung Razak, UTM, Kuala Lumpur. The first of its kind in Malaysia, the centre features three key areas which include a section for 5G innovations, a 5G research lab and a 5G learning space. Like its main office, this showcase gallery is also set in an open space where the key areas are configured as circular clusters laid out in a versatile manner. Interactive walls are strategically placed throughout the gallery to display information, visually leading visitors to different demo areas. All around cosy seating and custom-made counters invite visitors to linger on and utilize the space comfortably. Bold neutrals and accent colours like bright yellows and greens also come together to bring out the centre’s design theme. With the addition of warm lighting, the space comes alive as a welcoming venue to promote 5G technology.

or Millward Brown Malaysia’s office in North Centre Point, Midvalley, AI Associates has redefined the multinational market research company’s workspaces using a series of creative details, resulting in a brighter environment complemented by rich graphical elements and vibrant hues. This energetic atmosphere is immediately apparent at the front entrance. Standing out on the feature wall is Millward Brown’s tagline which is etched boldly into the cement render surface, providing a strong starting point to the rest of the office’s design concept. According to AI Associates, they were aiming for an interior space which is rich in graphical elements that strengthen and provoke communication between coworkers while generating a positive working environment. The main entrance is split into the staff entrance to the left and the guest entrance to the right to better control access. At the left entrance, an adjacent corridor leads into the main workspace where the fixed hot-desk zone is configured in an open and flexible manner. Throughout the open space, the workspace radiates a lighter outlook achieved through cement-rendered flooring, glass-encased discussion rooms as well as subtle tones for the furnishing.

Overhead, the ceiling is left exposed, with the ceiling slabs and services like the electrical ducting painted in white. Tasklights are affixed all across the ceiling, illuminating the space to give it a brighter atmosphere. Here, lighting plays a vital role in creating the office environment - along with suspended task lighting, other decorative lighting like extruded downlights and pendant lighting help to bring out a lively atmosphere. In Malaysia, Dentsu Aegis Network Malaysia is a dynamic collective of 13 brands including Dentsu Aegis, Carat, LHS, Dentsu One, Dentsu Media, psLIVE, brandscope, Meridian Outdoor, Oranje ISC, Posterscope, Isobar, iProspect and Vizeum. With so many brands brought under one roof, it is essential that each one of them has a distinctive space of its own. However, every division must also be visually cohesive to maintain the main corporate identity. To do this, AI Associates has designed an open, flexible yet connected space for the company’s 65,000 sqft office at Wisma Guocoland in Damansara Heights.

It is also imperative that Dentsu’s philosophy which emphasizes creativity and innovation is reflected in their workspaces. Here’s where carefully executed details are employed to allow each space to tell its own design story. Throughout the office, there’s an interesting composition of materials and features which reinforces a sense of creative aesthetic. As a way to infuse the office with a blend of multicultural flavour, Malaysian and Japanese decorative themes are also used to create a unique ambience in different spaces. The reception area which connects to the pantry is designed as a “kopitiam” which comes complete with old school chairs and tables as well as black and white photographs on the wall. In the conference room next door, the Malaysian theme continues, but this time with a more vibrant touch where illustrations of Kuala Lumpur city skyline adorn the wall.

At the reception, there’s a classic trishaw which is displayed as an art piece to express the local heritage design in Malaysia. For the training area, the designers incorporated a Tokyo-inspired design theme to reflect Dentsu’s roots; as this company was originally formed in Japan.” Within each of the different divisions, AI Associates has implemented more creative touches. For instance, in the Dentsu LHS division, the managers’ cubicles are designed as open cubes inspired by Feng Shui elements. “These cubes are constructed using different materials including wood, steel, cement render and brickwork to represent different Feng Shui elements” say the designers. “For example, glass is used to represent water, bricks represent earth, laminate represents wood and steel represents metal. Each of these cubicles can also be moved around.”

t this multinational specialty pharmaceutical company located on the 17th floor of The Pinnacle at Bandar Sunway, Selangor, there’s plenty of opportunity to take in the city views from the top - thanks to AI Associates’ careful interpretation of the company’s requirements to create an office that’s corporate and cheerful at the same time. “The client wanted a work environment that reflects their work culture, promotes collaboration and stimulates innovation,” the design team at AI Associates says. “To do this, we went for a modern open office concept that’s functional, flexible and optimized yet has a hip, cool and fun atmosphere. Overall, we were aiming for an ‘office of the future’ outlook.” What transpired was a versatile floor plan where a central shared facilities area is flanked by office workstations. In the centre is the main entry where visitors emerge from the lift lobby into a bright and lively reception area furnished with colourful elements.

Visitors walking into the office will be welcomed with low stools dressed in the company’s corporate colours of purple and white. There’s also a bar table with high chairs that serve as a meeting point for the staff. Beyond the holding lobby for visitors, the office space opens up to boardrooms, discussion areas, director/ manager rooms and the common working area. At the reception, a long counter with pendant lamps overhead complemented by large cutouts of a world map as well as backlit artwork complete the sleek white backdrop. Next to it, the feature wall leading to the casual lounge is adorned with large fonts depicting the company values. At the casual lounge or the “de-stress corner”, things brighten up to offer a conducive space for creative discussions. Towards the large windows are the workspaces, arranged in neat clusters to optimize floor space. Natural light that comes through three sides of the office gives

the interior a distinct advantage: employees can now enjoy daylight and city views while they go about their workday. Throughout the office, colourful details are incorporated strategically to suit the spaces’ different purposes. For example, the boardrooms are done up in a pristine manner with minimal furnishing as formal meetings are held here. Only a touch of purple tones and large graphics are employed to create visual continuity with the playful features outside. However, over at the refreshment area, it’s a warm and welcoming space done up in wood wall paneling. This space mimics a mini cafe where staff can enjoy their break time within a cosy space. Overall, whether it’s the main office area or the social spaces, the designers have been careful with material and colour choices so that there’s a sense of balance between the fun and functional design elements.

hanks to a harmonious composition of trendy materials and interior themes, a strong contemporary concept imbues the office of advertising firm, J.Walter Thompson (JWT) and its sister digital agency, Mirum. Located in Jakarta, this office features a unique take on corporate settings, diverting from conventional office typology. Previously located in different buildings, JWT and Mirum have now been brought together under one roof to consolidate their operations. Other than providing better support to their staff members, this new office is also key in giving these two companies the opportunity to send strong messages about their internal culture, and how the business will thrive in an ever-changing environment. With this in mind, it was a preeminent for AI Associates to understand the key priorities commonly shared between both JWT and Mirum in Jakarta so that the resulting interior design is cohesive. Above all, it was important that JWT and Mirum maintain their unique identity and brand expression in this new workplace. The corporate character of JWT is more subtle while Mirum is more energetic. However as it is still within the same office space, the design of the different divisions must be in harmony with each other.

To convey this, a contemporary industrial concept brings the entire office space into a cohesive whole, achieved through the use of different materials and features. At the reception area, polished grey cement surfaces grace the floor and wall surfaces, complemented by a blend of mid-century furniture and chic furnishing. A Persian rug stands out from beneath the seating area, while the unique reception backdrop brings the eye towards JWT and Mirum’s logos. From the reception, the space opens out to the main workspaces which are done up in complementing themes. For JWT’s division, the interior design is stronger in expression with a more corporate theme leading the space. Here, a lone tree anchors the space, creating a lush ambience while breaking the monotony of the tables and office chairs. Right next to it, a discussion room is enclosed within a glass-walled area. Light floods in from the floorto-ceiling glazing on the side which also offers views of the city. The other workspace belonging to Mirum features clusters of workstations set within an open space concept as well. Thus, the office takes on an open concept where only visual demarcation is used to differentiate spaces. For instance, in lieu of solid walls, dividers that double up as open shelves are used. Meeting rooms are also set in glassencased rooms to maintain visual continuity. Here and there, the space is punctuated with seating areas and discussion nooks. The collaborative nature of the design concept is strongly portrayed in the breakout area. With a cafe-like theme as its stylistic focus, the designers have configured the space into a welcoming and sociable area. The placement of furniture pieces in different styles and designer lighting in this area brings out a vibrant outlook while still maintaining a sense of uniformity with the rest of the office.

Designed by Mathias Seiler, Head of Design and Marketing at Girsberger, the Akio tables are available in oak or American walnut. Offered in an unobtrusive design of simple and minimal lines, and in a versatile choice of round, oval or rounded quadratic tabletops, in sitting or standing table heights, the tables can be adapted to a palette of places such as meeting rooms, breakout areas, bistros or business lounges. Not only does the solid wood fit in with the Swiss furniture maker’s company ethos of promoting the use of natural and authentic materials at work, it is also a material that creates warmth, giving the workplace an overall homey effect. oday, we are both more connected as a society and, ironically, increasingly less connected; shielded from each other and the natural world by our screens, our cars, our homes and the buildings in which we work. But when we walk outside, our pathways reveal the importance of reconnection: the choices we make in our destinations, how we get there and the unexpected gathering places that we happen upon. Invariably we are also drawn to areas of respite where nature is present, nurtured to grow in the environment or simply there by its own persistence. When designer of the collection, David Oakey was researching for the Human Connections Collection, he uncovered how the next generation of offices support such concepts; how they incorporate urban elements like neighbourhoods and squares, to pre-ordain collaboration and exchange between users. While he admits, “We cannot make humans connect through carpet,” he trumpets Interface products’ ability to “define pathways, crossing points, and attractive places for meeting and colliding.”

LEANING FIGURES

I

ndonesian born artist Adi Gunawan, born in 1974, received his education at Institut Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta. In his symbolic sculptures, Adi invokes euphoria and the significance of animals in his work due to his cultural background of growing up in an agrarian society. He uses his cultural positioning as a tool to visualize motions, gestures, characters and expressions of various subjects that he sculpts. He then conveys constructed meaning which, in and through his forms, figures and compositions, puts forth the issue of a mystical relationship between animals and humans. Adi’s highest accolade thus far was representing Indonesia at the Beijing Olympics 2008 Fine Arts Exhibition, where he was bestowed the further honor of an Olympic Torch Award. His sculpture toured Hong Kong, the United States, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland and many other countries. This piece “Hold You Tight” depicts two figures side by side in a posture of encouragement and support - with both figures resting on each other in relief. The figures joined together portray tenderness, affection and appreciation of each other – the evidently smaller figure on the right leaning on the other endearingly for comfort, and the larger figure on the left standing strong and tall like a pillar of support for the other. They have on their faces expressions of contentment and showcase the understanding that they both share - an inexplicable connection and bond that is indicative of affection and devotion.
