For many designers, context continues to be the operative word when working on a design that addresses, not just aesthetic concerns, but also practical issues related to the project in question. It truly takes a talented and capable team to materialise an idea that perfectly unites, place, budget and vision.
A
t Office Concept, we are lucky enough to know some of the most accomplished personalities in the industry firsthand. Personally, it’s a real honour to chart the growth of many a successful studio, established or up and coming. Since meeting founder Simon Pan years ago in Singapore, I’ve been impressed with his uncanny ability to fully comprehend just what it truly means to design people-oriented solutions for the workplace. A self-professed perfectionist, Pan is someone who takes pleasure in the looking at the whole picture and analysing its details from top to bottom. To the delight of his growing list of clients, this holistic point of view also informs the modus operandi of his award-winning Jakarta-based firm PAND International Design. As PAND continues to flex its creative muscle with projects that set the bar high for contemporary workplace design, we are excited to see where things take this energetic young practice. On another note, I’m happy to share that we’ll be featuring more European furniture designs in future issues. We also intend to amp up the focus on product designs in relation to featured workplace interiors. Thoughts on what you would like to see more or less of in the magazine? Feel free to send them our way! Happy reading and until next time…

For those on the lookout for a table that can do it all, the Ypsilon will surely not disappoint. Created by Jorge Pensi Design Studio for Italian brand Pedrali, this dexterous piece - complete with a handy flip-over top for added compactness is truly a multitasker’s dream. Built for areas large and small, this tilting, stackable table proves its worth as a workstation, meeting table and co-working space fixture.
Classic, structurally inspiring architecture served as the main inspiration for the Stacy Collection. Designed by Lievore Altherr, this dashing family of high-performance stackable chairs puts a refreshingly sophisticated spin on modular furniture. Evoking time-honoured materials such as brick, rust, sandstone, marble and iron, Stacy’s crisp lines and bold silhouette give way to a pleasing visual appearance as well as a lightweight framework that accommodates custom material pairings and a range of premium accessories.
Bearing in mind the importance of a flexible work environment defined by closed and open areas, the Pendrillon was conceived as a stylish ode to the changing dynamics of an increasingly nomadic work culture. Composed of spatial units that are at once partially closed and wholly autonomous, this cell-based organisation system by Giulio Marelli effortlessly marries function and cool aesthetics while doing double duty as a semi-closed office and a collective meeting area.

According to the design experts at the Brunner Group, co-working simply doesn’t live up to the term if every participant isn’t working at the same level. Promising to take flexible working to bold new heights, this sleekly configured conference table by the German brand will likely soon become a fixture in innovative contemporary offices, thanks to its main selling points, which include ample legroom, height-adjustability and, of course, a killer design.
Tired of run-of-the-mill office chairs that are uninspiring in look and feel? The se:motion chair ought to change your perspective on conventional sit and swivel work dynamics. Offering its sitter the ease of unrestrained mobility, this do-it-all piece features a perforated backrest that sets the stage for elasticity and optimal comfort. Placing emphasis on sustained good posture, the thoughtfully positioned lumber curve and ergonomically fashioned seat is additionally enhanced by changeable upholstery.
When a project enters hardcore brainstorming phase, it’s time to put away the room dividers and bring in the big guns. For König + Neurath, that entails an acoustically optimised retreat zone dubbed THINK.TANK.II. Proffering enhanced acoustic protection via a double-glazed surface, this unique enclosure was designed to fit right into open space areas without being visually intrusive. Showcasing pared-down utility, the design nods to minimalist integrity and Teutonic precision.

Begone clunky office seats of the past that forgo aesthetics by wearing their technical assets on the outside. Proving that style and utility can come together in a pretty package, Vela is a dream when it comes to extended periods of sitting, thanks to its easy seat adjustment capabilities and a concealed response mechanism in the seat that enables the user to take on a natural posture based on his or her weight.
When standard office overhead lighting just doesn’t cut it, do your failing vision a favour and make sure the freestanding Luminaire LAVIGO is within arm’s reach. Slotting easily into the side of a standard worktable or desk, this transportable, high-performance LED light ensures for uniform illumination of large light calculation surfaces. DESIGNING MILLENNIUM-CENTRIC WORKSPACES

With over 15 years of experience in the international interior design arena, Simon Pan, Managing Director of PAND International Design brings more than just his design and build expertise to his current role. His keen eye for workplace trends and creative details has also given him an edge when it comes to designing out-of-the-box office interiors that are a class above the rest. In this interview, he talks about what it takes to successfully create unique offices for their global clients.
“PAND’S FORTE AND FOCUS IS OFFICE DESIGN FOR CORPORATE COMPANIES, THUS OUR RANGE OF SERVICES ARE AIMED AT GIVING OUR CLIENTS THE BEST SOLUTIONS TO MEET CURRENT WORKPLACE TRENDS AND REQUIREMENTS.” Simon Pan, Managing Director, PAND International Design
Q: LET’S START WITH YOU AND YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INTERIOR DESIGN FIELD? A: Looking back, it’s been an exceptional journey! From young, I have always loved design, and it’s this passion that led me to pursue a career in interior design. After years of hard work, I graduated in Interior Design from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Following that, I worked at several international design firms in Singapore before establishing PAND International Design. I have been designing and planning spaces for almost two decades. All these years in the interior design trade have definitely proven to be a distinct advantage. It’s how I can bring over 15 years of experience in design and project management along with the high standards of international design expertise that I had gained from working at prime international firms to my role as Managing Director of PAND. Working with high profile globally-recognized clients over the years also helped me hone a keen eye for design details as well as an intuitive sense of what are the latest workspace trends. All this culminates into significant professional workplace design expertise that I passionately invest into my work here at PAND. I continuously strive for perfection in my work. I am passionate about designing spaces that can unlock my full potential as a designer. I am driven to lead my team into creating highquality environments, spaces and places that support life-changing experiences. I am grateful that, as a design leader, I am helping to position PAND at the leading edge of workplace design. I look forward to bigger and better project, especially those that would change lives and foster new trends. I am always up for challenges because I see these as opportunities to create higher quality ideas and solutions! Q: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR COMPANY, PAND INTERNATIONAL DESIGN. A: PAND specializes in international design services for MNCs in Jakarta. There are very few
international design firms in this region - that’s where we come in to bridge the gap. We focus more on office design for corporate companies, thus our range of services are aimed at giving our clients the best international design solutions to meet current and specific workplace trends and requirements. Through leveraging on our international design expertise, PAND delivers a full spectrum of boutique design and build services – from outstanding concept development, well-conceived planning and design and high-quality project management to excellent construction phase services, we are superbly equipped to fulfil our clients’ brief, no matter how diverse. We are guided by our commitment to serve the best interests of our clients. At PAND, we ensure that every client receives extraordinary service and meticulous follow-through. To date, we have done many globallyrecognised MNC’s offices in Jakarta including the headquarters of FWD, Cargill, Shopee and DNFP (an associate of Hogan Lovells), with many more in the pipeline. Many of these global corporate firms seek us out because we are capable of meeting their requirements for international design solutions that aren’t available from many other design firms. I would say that many of our projects is for repeat clientele and referrals as well. This stands as testimony to our clients’ high level of satisfaction of our services and our high standards of quality in our work. Q: CAN YOU TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE LATEST DESIGN TRENDS IN OFFICE DESIGN? HOW DO THESE TRENDS CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE WORK AND CONTRIBUTE TO NEW WORKPLACE CULTURE? A: Today’s workspaces have evolved quite significantly to serve our changing work styles. Collaboration is becoming a norm to enhance productivity and creativity. This is where trends like co-working spaces come into the picture to fulfil a new generation of work environment one that caters to the millennial’s work style. In
creating workspaces for this new generation, it is important to connect life to the work environment by supporting work-life balance and bringing flexibility and convenience into the workspace through the use of technology. Ultimately, workplace trends are more than just implementing what’s new – it’s one that responds to a functional work culture and the needs of the organization. It is this understanding that sets PAND apart from other design firms as we can offer more than just exceptional design for new workspaces; we often serve to lead the way in innovating new ways to make offices work better and more efficient. Q: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE AREAS IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN THAT STILL NEED IMPROVEMENT? A: Indeed there’s much demand for sustainable spaces right now. More companies and clients are moving towards sustainability when it comes to creating their workspaces. However, while there are those who know what sustainability is really about, there are also some that don’t fully understand what it is - they may just want to meet certain green certification specifications. It’s a very grey area, and I would say one of the key improvements in sustainability-driven design is education - to create awareness about what sustainability is all about. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE/MOTTO? A: ”Design is life.” Design is ever-changing, like life itself. Good design helps enrich people’s lives. With design, anything imagined can be made a reality. Q: LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? A: We are aiming to have a more expansive regional reach to cover Asia Pacific in the next five years.

DRIVEN BY CREATIVE PASSION

To Siti Sara, Senior Project Manager of PAND International Design, excellent client services and superb project management skills are crucial in ensuring every project she handles is a success. She attributes her accomplishments to the creative autonomy and team support she receives at PAND. She sheds more light about her role at PAND and what she loves best about her job in this interview.
Q: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND – WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ARCHITECTURE? A: As a young child, I really like to draw. When I was older, I discovered that I have an artistic side. However, when I had to choose a major between fine arts and architecture in university, I went with architecture instead. Having learned what each course had to offer, I realized that architecture was a better fit because I am a structured person. I like that architecture is a balance between art and function. In 2008, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Trisakti University in Indonesia. Following this, I started working in a local architecture firm. A year later I left the firm to join PT.Colliers International in Jakarta. Over the 5 years I was there, I had acquired a lot of experience handling small to big projects based in different locations. In 2016, I joined PAND as Senior Project Manager. My role in this company covers different areas from project managing, planning and budgeting to project administration. I also manage a team of internal and external associates from the start of the project to completion. Q: CAN YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING AT PAND DESIGN?
A: In the beginning when the company was set up, it was just Simon and me. As it was a 2-person company at that time, we had to juggle different roles. It was challenging but I had the chance to learn and pick up new skills. Since then, we have come a long way and I appreciate the trust and respect that I received in my work from Simon and the management. What I like most about my job here is having the flexibility to handle projects my own way. The projects are interesting in themselves in that, there are so many ways that I can manage these projects using my own creative solutions. I like that we aren’t bound by strict guidelines on how to work with our clients and that I have the autonomy to make decisions in the projects I handle. The work culture at PAND puts importance on teamwork. I enjoy working alongside designers to ensure each project is not just beautiful but functional as well. As we are a design and build company, we need to ensure that whatever we propose is practical, efficient and easy to maintain. Everything must look good and work well at the same time so that our clients truly benefit from the spaces we design for them. Overall, it has been a pleasant journey here at PAND. I am grateful that I have been given many
opportunities to continue to build my career in this company. Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE DONE? WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THEM? A: The projects have been all very diverse and interesting. One project - the Cargill office in particular, stands out for me because the client has been supportive, and we work together very well. There were many challenges in this project, but we manage to get it done according to the brief, budget and schedule. This aside, I would say the biggest challenge when it comes to working on our projects is to know how to efficiently cater to what the client wants. There’s budget to manage and we have to balance that with delivering excellent quality as well. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE/MOTTO? A: Be good to people for no reason. In my line of work, I meet many people from different walks of life. We never know what we can learn from them. Thus, no matter who they are, no matter if there’s a purpose or not, it’s important to treat everyone with kindness and respect.
“AS WE ARE A DESIGN AND BUILD COMPANY, WE NEED TO ENSURE THAT WHATEVER WE PROPOSE IS PRACTICAL, EFFICIENT AND EASY TO MAINTAIN. EVERYTHING MUST LOOK GOOD AND WORK WELL AT THE SAME TIME SO THAT OUR CLIENTS TRULY BENEFIT FROM THE SPACES WE DESIGN FOR THEM.” Siti Sara, Senior Project Manager, PAND International Design

hen it comes to innovative, people-driven workplaces, PAND International Design’s office stands out with its chic spaces, thoughtfully created to offer their employees and visitors an interesting spatial experience. For those working at PAND, formal and informal spaces are equally enticing, inviting staff to work and play at the same time – for example in the boxing ring-themed meeting room. On the other hand, clients who drop by would find the office a refreshing experience. Right from the entrance, a warm and welcoming sensation takes over before leading guests into the charming discussion areas that often raise the question: is this a café or an office? The question is not far-fetched as the waiting area has a cosy coffee place ambience while the pantry next to it is intentionally designed to convey a café feel. “We wanted an office that doesn’t look and feel like a traditional office,” says Simon Pan, Managing Director of PAND International Design. “Thus, we brought together some of our best ideas like coworking style concepts and creative details into our new office.” Done up entirely in glass with metal frames, the entrance offers a clear view of the front-of-house spaces from the outside. A blue chair in the waiting area complements the rattan wall details beautifully, while light wood flooring juxtaposes with the exposed ceiling covered in metal mesh above, resulting in a warm industrial theme that’s decisively contemporary at the same time.

Brightly-lit, the café-inspired pantry comprises a small kitchenette and a central bar counter with high chairs. The space is multifunctional – it’s a place for meals, but employees are also free to use it as a casual discussion area or a cosy spot to work in while having a cup of coffee. Throughout the office, intricate details are incorporated to foster a touch of personality to the spaces. In the pantry, the kitchenette’s backsplash is adorned with recycled marble strips to create an eye-catching backdrop for the metal shelving while the bar counter is constructed from unpolished steel to retain its rustic quality. The visual highlights continue in the meeting room where zesty green wallpaper with palm tree motifs is used to infuse a tropical theme. To keep it simple, minimal furniture is utilized – just a white table and a pair of green task chairs are placed here. Designer lighting overhead provides an eye-catching finishing touch.

For the larger meeting room, a pristine white backdrop enhanced with yellow lines instil a streamlined effect. Acoustic materials are also used to control the noise level in the room. Just across the main workspaces, the boxing ring meeting room is a hot favourite among employees. Mirrors are used to optically enlarge the room. Instead of chairs and tables, PAND opted for colourful bean bags from Bottom Dock. “While this is a meeting room, this is where employees come to destress as well. There’s a punching bag and a sofa that resembles a huge boxing glove.” says Simon. “We like having brainstorming sessions here too. The bean bags are cosy spots to sit on. We can also use markers on the mirror.” In this office, PAND puts strong emphasis on a creative and energetic work environment for their team. By having open, versatile areas that are thoughtfully designed, they have successfully created a variety of workspace experiences for their employees that promotes higher productivity and closer work relationships.

Designed by PAND International Design, this office expresses a shift away from conventional corporate styles towards a more creative workplace design. The project began with a series of discussions with FWD’s heads of departments and their branding team, which eventually culminated into a distinctive concept of “chasing the sun”. While the client’s directive was to create a highly functional corporate office for their expanding workforce, they also wanted a workplace environment that has a more people-friendly touch. “Our main objective is to bring the excitement and spirit of life into the office – that’s where the inspiration of “chasing the sun” comes in,” Managing Director of PAND International Design, Simon Pan explains. “We created a dynamic neighbourhood masterplan where we merged accessibility and the ease of orientation into a vibrant and lively atmosphere. This will be a place for users to embrace the challenges in life and reach for a better future, much like how the sun will rise every day, offering a new opportunity each day. “

“AS FWD’S CORPORATE COLOURS COMPRISE A VARIETY OF COLOURS, WE WERE CAREFUL WITH HOW WE APPLIED IT AS THERE’S A RISK OF OVERDOSING THE SPACES WITH SO MANY COLOURS IT COMES OFF LOOKING CHILDISH – LIKE A KINDERGARTEN.” Simon Pan, Managing Director, PAND International Design

In the main workspaces, the design firm implemented an agile work environment to optimize space utilization and instil higher efficiency and collaboration among employees. To inject FWD’s personality into the spaces, the company’s corporate colours have been strategically used throughout the office interior. “Colours play a significant role in carrying through the company’s brand identity,” Simon says. “As FWD’s corporate colours comprise different hues, we were careful with how we applied it as there’s a risk of overdosing the spaces with so many colours it comes off looking childish – like a kindergarten. To make sure we integrate colours in a sophisticated way, we devised a series of colour bands for the ceiling. Considering the whole office is configured within an open, flexible layout, we also used colours to demarcate each department. Thus, when you walk into this office, you’d notice changing colours as you go from one department to the next.”

The design team also incorporated running tracks that span across the open office. “Features like the colourful bands and running tracks are designed to motivate users to explore the physical space,” Pan explains. “In the main workspace, we wanted to offer an element of surprise in an activity-based workplace environment via a neighbourhood concept.” The neighbourhood concept is brought to life through spaces designed like a town centre which comes complete with a bright orange truck that serves a rather important purpose. “The CEO requested for a truck to stand on during the bi-yearly townhall,” Simon says. “It was definitely an unusual request, but not an impossible one. We modified a Volkswagen truck to accommodate a solid platform over it. When no-one is standing on top to make announcements, it can be used as a bar counter.”

Throughout the office, there are eye-catching representations of outdoors parks. Complementing the furniture is a whiteboard with a tree-shaped outline. Behind the whiteboard are a pair of glass-encased phone booth spaces to give employees a more private and quieter place to take calls or work in. To align with Pacific Century Place’s green concept, sustainable materials are used wherever possible. In the reception area, the flooring is made from wood salvaged from old sampans in Bali which adds a local flavour to FWD’s Indonesian headquarters. “In this office, we combined functional elements and stylistic details to create a place where people would be excited to come to work every day,” Simon says. “There’s also no better place for this office to shine in than Pacific Century Place as this building has the perfect combination of flexible spaces, technology-driven infrastructure and an immensely strategic location.”

argill, a company renowned for its food, agriculture, financial and industrial products requested for a distinctive design concept that expresses who they are for their new office in Jakarta. They also wanted their new space to represent their core values of sustainability and social responsibility. To create a sculptural and dynamic workplace environment for Cargill, PAND International Design drew upon a natural habitat concept. At the reception area, the counter is designed to resemble a bird’s nest. “The bird’s nest is a place where a bird will always return home to rest and feed. Based on this inspiration, our intention is to create a place Cargill can call home in their new Jakarta office,” says Simon Pan, PAND’s Managing Director. “It’s something very different, yet we wanted to put in elements that are warm and familiar.” The bird’s nest concept is beautifully translated into a sculptural masterpiece for the reception counter. Over 2,000 pieces of wood sourced from Indonesia were used to craft the surface into its rounded nest-like form, resulting in a stunning piece that demands attention instantly. “The whole process took about a month or so to complete,” Simon says, “We were meticulous with ensuring each piece is stacked precisely on top of each other so that the outcome is perfectly rounded.”

Other references to nature in this space include a living wall of plants behind the reception desk which accommodates Cargill’s logo. There is also an old tree trunk serving as a decorative feature at the waiting lounge. To infuse an Indonesian flavour to the office, textured floor tiles are used. “Indonesia is a country with abundant natural resources. In this office, we implemented a variety of natural materials into our design. For example, naturallytreated timber and even a large tree trunk,” Simon explains. Spanning two levels, this office features a “communications staircase” which connects the two floors of its workplace. Right next to the stairway is the pantry/ breakout room which serves as a place for employees to chill out, have their lunches or get together for informal discussions. The natural habitat concept continues here with leaf-like ceiling features and bold colours. Loose furniture like outdoor bench seats also contribute to the back-to-nature ambience.

“OVERALL, THE LAYOUT IS FUNCTIONAL BUT DYNAMIC – WE CONFIGURED THE SPACE TO INCLUDE DIFFERENT SEATING ELEMENTS SO THAT THERE’S AMPLE ROOM FOR COLLABORATIVE WORK.” Simon Pan, Managing Director, PAND International Design
“The pantry area is created as a collaboration space,” Simon says. “We also applied nature-inspired features like the green and dark grey suspended ceiling elements to represent leaves. These are not just decorative – the ‘leaves’ are actually made from acoustic materials. As this area comes with a 2-plane ceiling, sounds tend to bounce all around which can cause the space to be very noisy. Thus, we used these leaf-like acoustic panels and timber strips to help minimize the noise level.” For the main workspaces, the design team kept the space open and fluid. Workdesk areas are punctuated with breakout corners to encourage more interaction between employees. Glass walls are used in the meeting rooms to provide visual continuity from one space to another. As natural day light is a challenge in this office, tinted mirror and double-glazed partitions were also employed to create a bright and spacious atmosphere. “We toned down the colour palette and details in the main office space to align with Cargill’s corporate brand requirements,” Simon shares. “Overall, the layout

The lively atmosphere in Shopee’s new office demonstrates the company’s work culture with fun features that create an enjoyable and creative work environment.

ith its employee-centric design approach, Shopee’s new office in Jakarta brings together a vibrant concept that expresses collaboration and connectivity. A Sea company first launched in Singapore, Shopee is one of the leading e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia. When they spread their wings into Indonesia, they wanted their new office in Jakarta to portray their core company culture and signature style in an open and dynamic manner. Taking up four floors at Sea’s 6-level headquarters which also accommodates their other two brands Garena and Airpay, Shopee is easily distinguishable from the other two with its bold orange colour theme, a key element of their brand identity. “We had to follow Shopee’s corporate design guidelines very closely in this project, “ Simon Pan, Managing Director of PAND International Design says. “But there was also ample opportunity for us to add on subtle yet impactful details here and there to give the space its own personality. Take the reception area for example - the whole space may be a mirror image of Shopee’s reception space in their regional offices. However, we used higher quality materials to improve on the existing design.” To create the curved backlit counter with Shopee’s signature patterns - an element that’s implemented across all Shopee’s offices - PAND employed a custom-made solid surface material that comes with a glossy opacity so that the backlighting streams through with a softer luminosity. This contributes to the cosy environment of the reception area and complements the rest of the open-concept space with a warm and inviting feeling. Orange pathways are also incorporated to visually define the different areas while leading foot traffic to other spaces in the office.

As Sea’s office spans 6 floors, a central staircase adorned with a huge green wall is carved out near the entrance to connect the floors. This creates an instant focal point which expresses a sense of vertical continuity. “An internal linking feature like this staircase gives the office a grand feeling; it also creates curiosity as to where the staircase would lead to,” Simon remarks. For the main working space, PAND aimed to introduce a highly collaborative workspace where employees feel inspired and supported. A variety of work desks and seating options in an open-plan setting contributes to an interactive work culture, as do the collaboration areas and informal discussion spots that come complete with bean bags and colourful couches. While the space fosters open communication, privacy is granted by glassencased private meeting rooms as well as small phone booth rooms placed near the collaboration area. It’s more than just a space for dining as they use it for their town hall meetings as well,” Simon says. “We kept it very vast and open so it can easily adapt to different functions.” Aesthetic-wise, the town hall space features the company’s key colour, orange along with creative details that bring out Shopee’s vibrant brand identity. “On one side of the wall, we put up a magnetic board forming Shopee’s logo. Above, we installed these organic-shaped elements that aren’t just decorative - they are constructed from acoustic materials to prevent the space from getting too noisy,” Simon elaborates. Throughout Shopee’s office, it’s evident that the design emphasizes employee’s spatial experience while keeping in line with the company’s design key elements. “We wanted to create a dynamic workspace that stimulates creativity and collaboration,” Simon comments.

C
onjuring an effective design concept for Garena and Airpay’s new office meant bringing in the company’s corporate identity into their two-level workspace. For these two companies (both Sea’s core brands alongside Shopee), PAND International Design elegantly infused their brand identity by translating it into a practical solution that strategically configures different workspaces within an open plan layout. For instant identification of these two companies, PAND selected materials, colours and furniture that reflect who Garena and Airpay are. For starters, their corporate colour, blue is used. This is prevalent in the reception area where seas of blue span across the ceiling adorned with white suspended planes that provide acoustic function. “Garena and Airpay’s office takes up two of the six floors that their parent company, Sea occupies. The other floors are occupied by Sea’s online shopping platform, Shopee. All of these floors are linked by a central stairway,” explains Simon Pan, PAND’s Managing Director. “While these three brands are housed together, they are easily recognisable through brand-inspired elements that we incorporated into the space. To represent Garena and Airpay, we used a series of curved shapes and rounded features as well as the colour blue, which differs from Shopee’s bold orange theme and playful elements. For these two companies, we went for a sophisticated and clean-cut approach.” With its sleek appearance, the reception area features a curved counter that aligns with the rounded column bearing Garena’s logo. Lighting features that swirl around the column create an illuminated effect in this space. The waiting lounge is placed right next to the floor-to-ceiling windows which open out to the city skyline views.

As a way to foster better interaction among staff members, a dedicated dining hall which doubles up as Garena and Airpay’s town hall space provides employees with a welcoming venue to have their meals and socialize with their colleagues. The dining hall also features a pool table and an air hockey table in the dining hall, adding on a recreational element to the space. “The dining hall is a large open space which comfortably fits up to 680 pax during their town hall sessions. To create an inviting environment, we enhanced the hall with timber strips on the ceiling and warm flooring materials,” Simon elaborates. “Loose furniture like lightweight chairs and tables are used so that they can be easily moved around. We wanted this space to be as flexible as possible to serve different purposes.” Apart from functioning as a place for lunches and town hall meets, the dining hall offers staff an additional space to hold informal group discussions, brainstorming sessions or casual interaction. These are placed right next to the workstations for easier access. There’s also an exclusive VVIP room on Level 29.” The VVIP room is set right across the waiting lounge adjacent to the reception area. hen PAND International Design was brought in to refresh a multinational tech company’s workspace for their mobile and visiting staff, they infused the space with more than just colours and decorative details. They completely turned the existing space around and transformed it into a future-forward hub that facilitates collaboration at every corner. “The client requested for a new co-working style environment to be incorporated into their workspaces,” explains PAND’s design team. “This new space is designed specifically for the company’s mobile workers and other visiting employees from their other Asia Pacific offices.” As their visiting employees don’t require a permanent workstation, PAND went for an open floor plan anchored by a central work hub designed in a cube-like form. What stands out immediately are the rows of colourful lockers on the side of the hub. While these lockers primarily function to offer mobile workers a safe storage space for their belongings, they also inject a lively ambience into the space with their multi-coloured doors. Tucked to the other side of the central hub are phone booths which provide employees a conducive place to carry out private work calls or small meetings. “Double glazing partitions for the phone booth ensures good acoustic for small meetings and phone conversations,” says PAND’s design team. Surrounding this hub is a variety of workspaces with different seating styles, including a touch-down area, hot desks, phone booths, collaboration and meeting spaces as well as breakout spaces and a work lounge. Flexible and laid-back, each of these areas features different furniture pieces, material types and colour palettes. DEWI NEGARA FACHRI & PARTNERS 100 THIS PICTURE: By positioning the reception counter at to face the lift lobby, it opens up the space for better visibility from the entrance.
It’s all in the details - that’s the secret to DNFP’s well-composed office. In this corporate interior, strategic features are crafted to optimize the layout plan and produce a cosy work environment.
F
or Dewi Negara Fachri & Partners (DNFP)’s new office in Jakarta, PAND International Design utilized the law firm’s existing workspace to reinforce the firm’s corporate image along with creating a conducive work environment for its employees. An associate partner of globally-recognized law firm Hogan Lovells, DNFP offers a full range of high quality, commercial legal services to Indonesian and global clients. “As an international law firm, DNFP in association with Hogan Lovells has strict corporate design guidelines that we need to adhere to,” says Simon Pan, PAND’s Managing Director. “From the layout configuration to the choice of materials, we worked togethe with Hogan Lovells’ project manager to ensure everything is done according to their guidelines as well as their projected budget.” Set within a 705 sqm oblong-shaped floor plan, configuration of spaces initially proved to be a challenge as there are many awkward corners along the side walls. PAND resolved this by flanking the 16 partners’ offices in a straight line on one side so that each room has its own window view. Right opposite the offices, the social spaces like the pantry, open workstations and office facilities are lined to face the rooms. While this freed up the floor space at the front entrance, it resulted in a long and narrow corridor within the central space. To prevent a claustrophobic feeling at the corridor area, PAND used floor-to-ceiling glazing with frosted finishing in lieu of solid walls. This allows light from the rooms to stream through from the offices, creating a brighter and more open environment. Frosted glass walls also offer the advantage of both privacy and visibility at the same time, so that none of the rooms feels isolated from each other. For a sleeker and more contemporary look, the designers put in touch of aesthetics by engraving the names of the partners on the frosted glass.

Coming back to the front entrance, PAND positioned the reception counter to face the lift lobby for better visibility. By doing this, there’s a sense of spaciousness that balances out the narrow spaces. Adjacent to the reception area is the meeting room which is anchored by an adjustable conference table. “The reception area sets the tone for the rest of the interior design of the office. The space is also done up to elegantly convey Hogan Lovells and DNFP corporate identity,” Simon explains. “To align with Hogan Lovells’ design guidelines, we implemented a warm neutral palette consisting of wood finishing for the feature wall and polished stone in cream tone for the reception counter and flooring. The same cool and contemporary ambience is consistent throughout the office, but we have given the collaboration pantry a livelier outlook.” While the pantry features a polished look that is prevalent in the main offices, chic furniture with bold colours give it a more vibrant outcome. enveloped by wall glazing with frosted bands to create visual continuity. These small but impactful details further exemplify PAND’s design aptitude and their keen sensitivity to what the client needed. “PAND’s approach to design is refreshing. They listen attentively, building a clear understanding of what we need operationally and then balancing those requirements with practical details that enhance the look and feel of the space,” comments Stephen Harrison, Director of Office Services of Hogan Lovells. “Their initial budget was clear and was very much in line with our expectations. The planning and implementation were very well managed. Their practical and proactive approach ensured that some unforeseen challenges during the construction stage were simply taken in their stride. Despite the challenges presented by the programme, the quality of construction exceeded expectations.”

STYLED FOR CONTEMPORARY SPACES AND ENHANCED WITH SCULPTURAL ATTRIBUTES, THE AUTOMOTIVE-INSPIRED METRIK CHAIR ELEVATES THE CLASSIC CANTILEVER CHAIR TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.

“THE METRIK CANTILEVER CHAIR STANDS APART FOR ITS CONSISTENTLY INTEGRATED DESIGN APPROACH. IT HAS TAKEN UNTIL TODAY TO MAKE SUCH A COMPLEX STRUCTURE FROM ONE PIECE OF MATERIAL.”

A
classic piece created less than 100 years ago, the first cantilever chair was an object of obsession of many famous architects in the modernist era. Today, Wilkhahn has reinterpreted the iconic cantilever chair into a sleek seating masterpiece for offices through portraying the chair’s unique characteristics in a contemporary manner. Elegantly named Metrik, this cantilever chair is reminiscence of modern automotive design with its sculptural form and smooth contours. Polygonal shapes and rounded edges are part of Metrik’s distinctive body which is defined by a form-fitting assembly of the tubular steel frame and seat components. Both the seat and the tubular frame also carry the same colour to foster a cohesive and integrated look. “The Metrik cantilever chair stands apart for its consistently integrated design approach. It has taken until today to make such a complex structure from one piece of material,” says Wilkhahn. “The way the components are integrated plays with contrasts such as distinctiveness and neutrality, comfort and an understated appeal, as well as modernity and timeless design.” Six colours for the body and frame are available which can all be combined with a wide variety of covers and colours to suit different table concepts and office chairs. Metrik also comes with a chrome-plated frame version that allows up to six chairs to be stacked on top of one another, making it an ideal piece for breakout rooms and seminar spaces. KOKUYO UPTIS ADJUSTABLE WORKSTATION 112
DESIGNED WITH PRECISION WHEN PERSONAL SPACE IS CALLED FOR IN AN OPEN-PLAN OFFICE, KOKUYO’S UPTIS OFFERS USERS THEIR OWN WORK AND UTILITY SPACE WITHIN AN INNOVATIVE WORKSTATION.
THIS PICTURE: Sleek and elegant, Kokuyo’s Uptis is a sophisticated work desk that can be tilted to 12 degrees for perfect ergonomic comfort.
KOKUYO UPTIS ADJUSTABLE WORKSTATION 114 TOP: Uptis does more than the conventional laptop stand as it can help to alleviate strains on the neck, shoulders, wrists and eyes simultaneously.
BOTTOM: Uptis comes with a central work area and a utility space at the side to promote a sense of personal space.
S
trains on the neck or shoulders are often caused by uncomfortable positioning of your monitor or laptop. Many of us try to alleviate this by stacking our devices on top of books or getting a laptop stand so that the screen is at eye level. However, it is sometimes ineffective because there is an ideal angle to ensure ergonomic comfort - 12 degrees to be exact; an angle Kokuyo has perfected with Uptis, a work desk that can be adjusted to seven levels to align with your posture. Compared to flat desk surfaces, Uptis adjustable features help to reduce fatigue and stress to the neck, shoulders and even the eyes. When users tilt Uptis’ top plate to the ideal angle, it has been discovered that muscle strain on the neck is reduced up to 70%, thus contributing to better posture. Additionally, the eyes are protected too as the screen is at a comfortable level. While conventional laptop stands may be able to help raise the screen to eye level, studies have shown that it often causes strain to the wrist. Uptis resolves this with its adjustable tilt so that both the eyes and wrists are at an angle complementary to each other. More than just a functional piece, Uptis is also designed as an elegant space-saving workstation to complement modern workspaces. Utility space is created between one seat to another so that there’s ample space in the middle and around the sides for storing personal items and other devices. This innovative setup reduces clutter and promotes a sense of personal space, contributing to a more conducive and productive work environment.

it up, lean forward, recline to the back...however you move, Connex2 moves with you, seamlessly. All you have to do is just manoeuvre three operating levers, and this work chair will do the rest to give you the best sitting position. Upon manually adjusting the seat height, seat depth and lumbar support, Connex2 kicks into action via its automatic point-synchronised mechanism and 3D seat movement. This innovative mechanism allows a wide opening angle when leaning back, keeping constant contact between the backrest and the user’s body so that the seat is optimally aligned. To top this off, the 3D seat offers dynamic lateral left-right movement, supporting changing positions naturally. This innovative mechanism is particularly helpful in concentrated positions for hours of seated work. For instance, when the user leans forward towards the desk surface, the seat moves with him or her, reducing the pressure on the underside of the thighs which promotes continuous comfort in a seated position. A central aluminium element that wraps horizontally around the backrest support clearly defines Connex2’s unique aesthetics. This element also forms the armrests and blends in with the chair’s automatic mobile lumbar support. “The central aluminium element connects the back and armrest with the chair as a whole, like a belt,” says Jörg Bernauer, designer of Connex2. “This design feature and functional unit is new on the market and should be highlighted as one of the special features of Connex2.” Another standout feature of Connex2 is its colourful controls. “The controls are clearly recognisable and intuitive to use – either in classic black or off-white, or in a striking shade of green or blue. MERGING TRADITIONAL WITH CONTEMPORARY
S
tanding as one of Japan’s most identifiable Neo-pop artists, Hiro Ando’s work re-contextualises his country’s icons into a series of glamorous, modernized sculpture, showcasing exactly how contemporary art can be both inclusive and upbeat. With his bright colour schemes and glossy textures, the multidisciplinary artist creates artworks that embody both the old and new, playing on the identifiable and traditional mass culture icons of Japan like Sumo wrestlers, lucky cats and robots. Arguably, Ando’s trademark pieces are his cat figures that are heavily inspired by ‘maneki-neko’, the Japanese Lucky cat, a Japanese symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Standing on their hind legs, Ando’s cartoonised versions of such orthodox tokens, deeply entrenched in Japan’s historic myth and cultural roots are given a light-hearted makeover, becoming the lovechild between folklore, heritage and pervasive modernity, giving the traditional customs of Japan a newfound relevance in the contemporary art scene. Co-founder of CrazyNoodles, a studio of artists from Tokyo, Paris and Beijing who work with themes of popular Japanese contemporary culture, Ando’s Neo-pop art style is flashy and à la mode, a testament to Japan’s increasingly diverse and progressive customs. From his valiant, anthropomorphised Samurai and sumo Cats to his Pandas enrobed with rhinestone, Ando’s work is all about communicating with a ‘plastic language’; that is to make art that is inclusive and easily understood through recognisable subject matter, redefining the boundaries of ‘high art’ such that the stigma regarding the obscurity of modern art is eroded in response.
