For example, this issue’s showcase of projects by Siren Design is nothing short of impressive. We are ecstatic Siren Design has decided to be part of our year-end edition. The Procter & Gamble (P&G) project is particularly striking with its fantastic interplay of lighting, while the PwC Experience Centre stands out with its high-tech aesthetics. Another eye-catching element is the unique ceiling detailing within the No.1 Martin Place establishment, as well as the chic collaborative spaces at the Infosys headquarters. Zooming down to workplace furniture systems, the Lives Collection by Okamura exemplifies a truly versatile yet stylish work environment. When it comes to ergonomic seating, the Steelcase Karman offers more than just a gorgeous piece for an office setting - this work chair has a highly intuitive feature that ensures ultimate comfort when you sit down to work. Moving forward, I am anticipating a brighter year ahead in 2022. Thanks to everyone who have supported us all this time. COMPLEX SIMPLICITY
KRUZE CONTROL
VISITING THE FUTURE
Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec impress us once again with the new Cotone Slim-Pro, a minimalist sofa that celebrates simplicity on the outside but conceals an intricately complex mechanism on the inside. The entire piece radiates relaxation, thanks to its soft, generous cushions, which are suited for lobby and lounge areas. There is also the freedom to combine its aluminium structure so that you can have a customised piece created specially for key spaces in the workplace.
Classic meets contemporary – that’s the design intention behind the handsome Kruze Lounge chair. It’s more than its good looks because this chair offers an outstanding sitting experience to match its eye-catching appearance. The chair features a high sculpted back and gently curving contours, complementing a sleek profile that makes it a fantastic standalone piece for meeting areas, reception spaces, or waiting rooms. Kruze Lounge is also available as a lowback edition for more design possibilities.
A future-forward seating piece designed by Antonio Citterio in collaboration with Vitra, the ID Visitor touchdown chair blends total comfort with high-performance features. It’s in every sense a functional chair that’s versatile enough for a variety of applications yet captures attention immediately due to its stylish profile. The base is constructed akin to the legendary Visavis visitor chair from Vitra; however, it is also made to complement ID Visitor’s new backrests with a distinctive touch.

CURVY LIBERATION
RISING TYDE
The elegant Toa table by Robin Rizzini leverages on its streamlined edges to generate an alluring aesthetic. Lightweight and minimalist, the table features tapered bridge legs made of die-cast aluminium, which are thinner at the base and widen up towards the “T” element that supports the top. Perfect for contemporary offices, executive rooms, collaborative zones, and meeting rooms, Toa is also available in smaller sizes and with decentralised cable access for added convenience.
No sharp angles, only gentle curves: this approach successfully turns the Petit Bureau En Forme Libre designer desk by Charlotte Perriand into a charming focal piece for workspaces or home offices. Three supports – one larger and the other two more slender and cylindrical in shape – form its structure, complementing the natural Canaletto walnut material. The desk also comes in a matte lacquer finish in the collection’s colour palette for a more polished and vibrant appeal.
Sit or stand, Tyde 2 by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec lets you move between these two positions with ease. This sit-stand table system offers a myriad of configuration and equipment options to make things easier, whether you want a single desk or a large bench. You can effortlessly transform single desks, double clusters and conference tables into collaborative platforms or spaces for focused work. However you want them, the configurations easily adapt to your office’s dynamic requirements.

SIREN DESIGN - WORKPLACE DESIGN 020
ENABLING PEOPLE TO THRIVE SIREN IS ON A MISSION TO USE THEIR CREATIVITY TO HELP BUSINESSES REGENERATE THE PLANET.
S
iren Design was founded in 2005 as a place for creatives to thrive. Creating Siren from nothing, Siren’s founder, Mia Feasey, has always championed the idea that that there should be no limitations to success or opportunities based on gender, ethnicity or socio-economic status. With ambition, hard work and an ability to think differently, Siren has flourished from a disruptive start-up into a leading interior design consultancy. Unlike traditional design practices Siren is an incubator for new ideas where experimentation is encouraged. This philosophy has served to define Siren. Each studio – first Sydney in 2005, founded by Mia Feasey, and now led by Nicole Fitzgerald; followed by Singapore, co-founded with Penny Sloane in 2012; then Melbourne co-founded with Nicole Pollak in 2014; and most recently, New York co-founded with Christina Magrans in 2020 – have all been established by dynamic, entrepreneurial women with fire in their bellies, and a desire to make an impact through the interior environment. Siren prides themselves on going beyond the superficial aspects of design and delving into a thorough understanding of the people in the equation. Using clever design thinking to create engaging, dynamic communities, designed from the inside out. At a board meeting a few years ago, the Siren management team came to the realisation that interior design was worse than fashion when it came to sustainability and caring for the planet. In that meeting they made a collective decision to shake things up and they set a powerful new purpose and mission: their purpose is to enable people to thrive and their mission is to use their creativity to inspire businesses to regenerate the planet. Their mission and purpose is at the heart of everything Siren does and they strive to have positive impact wherever they can. Whether it be from simply looking at a project that might have an existing fit out and working out creative ways of repurposing elements to avoid waste, to selecting the most sustainable materials possible, focusing on improving the health and wellbeing of the people who will use the spaces they design, or finding ways to connect clients and other social enterprises who could need help and finding creative ways to combine the two. Sometimes they can have impact in small ways, sometimes it’s on a much larger scale, but their philosophy is that every action counts. The big question the studio has faced most recently is what is the future of the workplace? What will it look like and has it changed forever? Siren’s response is to first look within, taking a purpose-led approach using the Japanese concept of ‘Ikigai’ and applying it to the built environment in a strategy they call ‘Places for Purpose’. They then use this tool to uncover the key elements of a place or a business. The aim is to go beyond the numbers, extending the thinking to address questions such as: How does this place excel? How does it contribute to the community? How do we make this place feel special? Striving to get to the heart of things so that future workplaces have ultimate flexibility and usefulness, and serve as happy, healthy community hubs for the companies that call them home. As entrepreneurs and true creatives, the leadership team of Siren has been awarded a range of accolades including: 2020 Good Design Women in Design Award, 2018 INDE Design Luminary Award, Perspective Global 40 under 40 Design Star of the Future 2012, and 2010 NAWIC Business Woman Award to name just a few. Passionate and engaging, Siren’s founder, Mia Feasey is now using her public profile and global networks to help raise awareness and make change within the built environment and broader business community linked around Siren’s mission and purpose, and Siren’s other board members are doing the same. N0.1 MARTIN PLACE
AN ICONIC TRANSFORMATION THE ENTRY TO THE ICONIC NO.1 MARTIN PLACE HAS TRANSFORMED FROM A TRANSIENT ‘NOTHING SPACE’ INTO A VIBRANT PIECE OF THE COMMUNITY WITH FOCUS AND ENGAGEMENT ON EVERY LEVEL.

ow do you take an under-utilised, underwhelming mezzanine space in one of Sydney’s most iconic buildings and give it new life and vibrancy? That was the brief from Charter Hall in a design competition for the mezzanine of the iconic No.1 Martin Place - prime commercial and hotel towers anchored by the GPO, one of the country’s most significant heritage buildings. Set in a prime location, No.1 Martin Place attracted a broad mix of tenants including workplaces for LinkedIn, Microsoft and Expedia. The mezzanine level in question was a transient space near the lift well. A space that hundreds of people would walk through every day without stopping. However, this was also prime real estate, and Charter Hall identified that with creative thinking, this could be reinvigorated for the benefit of the immediate community. In response to the design competition, Siren envisaged the space as a marketplace, a space to connect with people,

THE BRIEF - CREATING A THIRD SPACE The detailed design brief was determined through extensive research, workshopping and stakeholder engagement. Based on this research, it was clear that there was a need for a ‘third space’ which tenants felt connected to. The space needed to serve as a flexible town hall space with links to community and ceremonial activities, food and beverage offerings to entice interaction, and a working lounge that transitioned from connection to relaxation. The opportunity, but also the challenge, was to combine old with integration of the new, to provide meeting, co-working, eating, drinking and social spaces, centred around existing relationships within the precinct.

drawing in the energy of the vibrant street life. Adriano Pupilli Architects (APA) envisaged the mezzanine as a portico; a semi-public front of house, a place to get to know your neighbours, under a vaulted canopy of dowel. There were strong synergies in the designs and Charter Hall decided to award the design competition to both studios and a collaboration was formed.

“ NO.1 MARTIN PLACE IS A REAL COMMUNITY PIECE. WE WORKED CLOSELY TOGETHER TO GET EVERYONE ENGAGED AND ON THE JOURNEY. IT WAS VERY PERSONALISED, AND I THINK THAT REALLY SHOWED THAT CHARTER HALL WERE LISTENING TO THE TENANTS, WHICH WAS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TENANTS. ” Mia Feasey, CEO of Siren Design
THIS PHOTO: A curtain is used to section off the fully flexible third space.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE A staircase from the foyer was designed to scoop people up from street level delivering them into the welcoming space. To slow people’s movement, creating intimacy and calm, a vaulted ceiling of dowels created a rhythm of undulating forms, referencing the classical elegance of the GPO. To bring surprise and delight a flexible gallery space was introduced, with sliding screens displaying artworks from local collectives which can then be rearranged to enclose a workshop space. Moveable joinery and banquette seating completed the transformation of the mezzanine and foyer. Architecturally, a portico was developed to create a memorable front of house; a place to linger, be inspired, meet the neighbours. This was complemented by dynamic public and private zones, a marketplace and articulation of the lively energy flowing from the tower above. Dead spaces became nooks for larger gatherings, thoroughfares became spaces for people to order coffee, have a quick bite or tap out an email, whilst overlooking and linking back to life on the street. The philosophy was to bring the outside in by incorporating biophilia, park benches and streetlights, playing with scale and proportion to maximise the double height space. Elements were well crafted, innovative and most importantly, customisable. The objective was to create multifunctional and flexible facilities, catering for the diverse needs of the community, supported by the seamless integration of technology.

N0.1 MARTIN PLACE
CREATING A COMMUNITY TO THRIVE No.1 Martin Place is now a vibrant piece of the community with focus and engagement on every level. Siren and APA allowed the qualities and users of the existing space to guide the approach to the planning. This space is about celebrating the interrelationship of people and place. Ultimately the user is the chooser. Mia Feasey, CEO of Siren Design explains: “No.1 Martin Place is a real community piece. We worked closely together to get everyone engaged and on the journey. It was very personalised, and I think that really showed that Charter Hall were listening to the tenants, which was important because they’re all completely different tenants.”

rocter & Gamble (P&G) is the largest household and personal care company in the world with operations across 70 countries, and brands sold in more than 180 countries internationally. P&G’s Asia Pacific headquarters are located in the Singapore Innovation Centre (SGIC), Singapore’s largest private research facility. The P&G research and development centre is manned by about 500 scientists and engineers with capabilities in consumer research, formulation, fragrance design, new materials, process development, equipment design, package design, analytical, performance testing, safety and regulatory assessment. THE BRIEF Innovation and collaboration between teams was at the heart of the innovation centre. Siren’s design brief was to transform an under-utilised café space into a place where multi-disciplinary teams could come together to develop creative solutions to help realise the company’s purpose – ‘to improve the lives of the world’s consumers’. The challenge was to do this with minimal structural modifications.

Siren’s response was to work with the existing structures, making them features of the space whilst maximising the usage and minimising waste. The use of striking elements such as vibrant dichroic film on the glass façade (which changes colour depending on the angle you view it from) were designed to draw people’s attention. The interior is defined by a single material: cork, which is 100% natural and renewable. The furniture is also completely flexible and can be transformed from stools, to tables or high tables and technology is integrated as well, to ensure that the space provides all of the tools to inspire creative thinking and problem solving. The result is a dynamic, engaging yet highly functional space which used by the teams in their creative process.

s the black glass door slide open, you step into a space that feels like a contemporary art installation. Colourful lights reflect from tessellated mirrors. The ceiling tilts, walls slant and the floor is metallic epoxy. It’s a space designed to surprise, to open your mind and to challenge the stereotypes. The lack of convention of the interior is precisely the point of this space. Incredibly, this space lies within the iconic Marina One in Singapore and serves as global consulting firm, PwC’s Southeast Asia Consulting Experience Centre. It’s not what you expect. It’s a series of juxtapositions – an organic plan with geometric elements, tactile elements with high-tech integrations, darkness versus light – these are all purposeful elements designed to echo the complex and multifaceted nature of the work done here. According to Marco Maimone, Chief Technologist, PwC; “The space amplifies how we work; it doesn’t dictate how we work,” making this project a standout for transformational thinking in the workplace.

PWC EXPERIENCE CENTRE 044
THE DESIGN BRIEF “PwC’s clear objective was to create a space that took you from now to the future. When you walk in, it’s wow! The arrival experience is really to reset the brain, to change the way you think,” says Penny Sloane, Managing Director of Siren Design, Singapore. The Experience Centre itself epitomises experimentation. The layout is a spatial trajectory that physically traces the design-thinking loop. The arrival is the first impression and the opportunity for guests to reset the brain and start imagining the impossible is possible. Programmable colour combinations evoke desired moods or represent clients’ corporate colours, creating an immediate sense of belonging. Clients step from the portal to a Solution Zone to participate in workshops and brainstorming sessions. Information gathered here goes to the back-of-house area across an open bar. Meeting rooms are enclaves for processing, which may result in accelerated digital or physical prototyping within the Makers’ Space. Back out in the client-facing area is the Immersion Zone, another first, where an audio-visual report replaces the conventional power-point presentation. This fluid relationship between spaces is guided by the organic plan, which is enhanced by natural light from the perimeter windows. The whole space is built on three-dimensional design-thinking processes.

“ PWC’S CLEAR OBJECTIVE WAS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT TOOK YOU FROM NOW TO THE FUTURE. WHEN YOU WALK IN, IT’S WOW! THE ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE IS REALLY TO RESET THE BRAIN, TO CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK. ” Penny Sloane, Managing Director of Siren Design, Singapore
THIS PHOTO: GENERAL OPEN OFFICE is an open and agile studio designed for collaboration at its core. The space features a variety of different work and meeting settings.
Dominic Stallard, PwC Experience Centre Leader and Chief Creative Officer explains: “We weren’t building an ‘office’, and it wasn’t meant to be just a pretty space. It was to be predominantly about function”. It was crucial that the Experience Centre reflected its purpose of helping clients navigate the future of technology. THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE As PwC’s clients walk into the Experience Centre for the first time, they are immersed in a world of complexity and refraction, which symbolises the digital disruption that surrounds them both personally, and in business. Siren created a space which enables PwC to take their clients on a continuous flow from what seems impossible to a solution. Every space is seamlessly connected; yet incredibly individual to target specific needs. The purpose is to encourage experimentation; each space is flexible and adaptable which enables PwC to customise the setup of the space depending on their client’s problems as well as their own collaboration and ideation needs.

THIS PHOTO: THE MELT ROOM has operable partitions and a movable table increasing the flexibility and usability of this space.
The design is deceptively clever; each piece of furniture, material finish, partitions have multiple uses. For example, the radius of the tiered seating in the solution zone sits perfectly against the radius of the partitions and can be easily moved by one person; all walls are writable, magnetic and aesthetically beautiful; and no one would expect to find doors in the arrival tessellated mirror tunnel however this is how the full circle of innovation is realised. Where the front is dark and dramatic, the main back-of-house workspace is ergonomic, collaborative and a lot brighter, as staff spend a lot of time there. Graffiti-like murals by Singaporean artist Clogtwo splash across the white walls, injecting doses of colour. Comfort and sustainability are addressed with sensors that switch lights off when no one is around and calibrate illumination to the most ideal level to eliminate fatigue. A hybrid of
height-adjustable tables, bar stools, office chairs and sofas point to the manner in which staff work. WHAT MAKES IT A STAND OUT? The Experience Centre is a magnetic place, a safe place for expression and experimentation, and a meritocracy, where ideas are valued more than seniority or salaries. It’s a space built to solve complex problems whilst being filled with joy. A place where PwC can assist in creating things and giving advice that can steer society and business, with engaged clients who are a long way out of their comfort zones and loving every minute. It’s a place where PwC is earning global recognition and reaping the rewards that come with it. “It’s one of those spaces whose value comes up whenever you interact with it,” says Dominic Stallard of PwC.

s the third project Siren has designed for this highly successful co-working business, The Commons Cremorne is culmination of years of experience in designing and managing co-working communities and it also provides great insight for larger corporates in creating dynamic, flexible working communities centred around sustainability and social responsibility, of particular relevance to the post-pandemic environment. In testament to success of the design and the engaging community within, the Siren team liked the space so much they decided move in! The Siren team believes in immersing themselves in their own designs in order to learn from it, and as creatives they also loved the idea of being fully imbedded in a dynamic, creative community. THE CONCEPT The concept of The Commons was created in Melbourne by two school mates, Cliff Ho and Tom Ye, out of a desire to achieve happiness in the workplace and redefine the meaning of a day at the office. With thoughtful consideration of the way people work today, the founders had a vision to create spaces with a harmonious marriage of the flexibility of today’s work style and the needs of the modern individual.
TOP & LEFT: The warm and welcoming concierge entry into The Commons.

THE DESIGN Cremorne has transformed in the past few years from sleepy suburb of Melbourne to a magnet for digital and disruptive businesses – now widely regarded as Australia’s Silicon Valley. The design celebrates Cremorne is at its core – the ‘Silicon Yarra’. A creative, innovative place and a place for big ideas. A place of discoveries and understated creativity that is naturally simple, yet impressive and warm. The idea is to create a journey where members connect, meet and are looked after in a shared environment, whilst still having ownership of their own space, a space that feels like home.

THE COMMONS CREMORNE
The Commons model is a successful one, and the business is on a path of expansion. The Cremorne site spans over a four-level new built tenancy and a rooftop space that has impressive 360 degree views. The largest Commons location yet, Cremorne has the most spacious desks and offices to date, and also features a maker space, a rooftop garden overlooking the city and a wellness studio.

THIS PHOTO: Dedicated open plan desks are perfect for collaboration or quiet work.
The Commons business philosophy focuses on creating strong community-based living and working. Spaces for meeting and connecting with like-minded people. The environment is designed to enable strong interactions through multiple third spaces scattered purposefully across the building to encourage bump moments between members, as well as enable team collaborations and cross working. The third spaces throughout The Commons Cremorne vary to cater for the diverse styles of members requirements, however specifically for The Commons Cremorne the third spaces were purposely designed throughout ground level so that it becomes the hub of the building whilst also surrounding the interconnecting stairs in order to activate the middle spine of the building to connect members from different floors. The environment is designed to allow easy transitions from focus works, to human interactions. The focus work areas are designed to be more quiet, bright and light to enhance productivity and team collaborations, whilst the human interaction spaces are designed to have a “buzz” and vibrancy.

THE COMMONS CREMORNE 060
THE CHALLENGE The challenge of the project was to connect two buildings together which were at a different floor level. The Commons Cremorne was also a budget conscious project, with a tight timeframe. The approach was about highlighting areas with strong features, while using on cost effective materials and simple detailing done well. The end result was an impressive environment throughout. The other challenge was to design a space that links well to the other Commons sites, yet is still unique to the Cremorne context and suits its building. The design response places a strong focus on human-centered design and wellness. This includes the incorporation of biophilic design - ensuring all greenery are living plants to support this. Siren also took a reduction of waste mentality using minimal finishes in different ways. Sustainability and environmental consciousness are key values of The Commons, and as a result, the space provides easy options for members to make sustainable decisions in their everyday lives.

s a global technology company, Infosys’ offering is vast. In the design of their new workplace, set in the heart of the Melbourne Quarter Precinct in Docklands, it was essential that these offerings were showcased whilst being underpinned by the values of their brand. In addition, the project faced the ultimate challenge; being completely constructed during a global pandemic. The results speak for themselves, with the project winning a Gold DrivenXDesign award for Commercial Interior Design. The 9,200m2 fitout project spans over four full floors plus a basement showcase space. Each floor takes on its own personality through form and function, optimising the user experience and communicating the interwoven conceptual story of a high-tech landscape, contrasting and intersecting with bursts of natural landscape. Whilst the aesthetic varies over the levels, there is a strong connection both physically and holistically between each level through visual connection of architectural lines, form and finishes. A new interconnecting staircase was also designed between three of the levels to create a vertical connectivity, to encourage movement over the levels and to promote interactions between the staff.

INFOSYS 066
THE BRIEF The brief for the project was to create a new workplace that embodied the core values of Infosys as a global business with a workplace model geared towards igniting high-performance collaboration between teams by offering many alternative settings across all levels. Infosys wanted to create a vibrant work community that extended the spirit of the Infosys culture from front of house, to all areas of the workspace. Through the workshopping phase, key areas of the fitout were envisaged including the Customer Suite, Creative Studio, Town Centre and Team Zones on the upper floors. Each area was defined to have its own identity, whilst establishing a connection within each space through the Infosys ecosystem. This was achieved by creating a design language that aided in navigating through the vast spaces throughout between each floor. The key design features included an immersive digital room, infamously nicknamed the ‘Digital Donut’; virtual reality and showcase displays; interactive games areas; training facilities; integrated Indigenous artwork embedded into the architectural materiality; meeting suites; recreation and game zones; breakout spaces and various collaboration settings, with sustainability being at the forefront of all the specification decisions made throughout the project.

INFOSYS WANTED TO CREATE A VIBRANT WORK COMMUNITY THAT EXTENDED THE SPIRIT OF THE INFOSYS CULTURE FROM FRONT OF HOUSE, TO ALL AREAS OF THE WORKSPACE.
THIS PHOTO: Communal Kitchen breakout featuring overhead planting and an interactive play wall.
IMMERSING IN THE INFOSYS WORLD As a global technology company, it was essential to showcase Infosys’ vast offering, as well as connecting with the brand within the design. The “Living Lab” customer showcase suite, located on one of the basement floors had direct public access from the Sky Park and created an experiential environment through immersive experiences, digital integration and physical displays. This floor also created an educational and information sharing platform for external users to become immersed in the Infosys world. The upper floors created a stage for what the business represents. This is demonstrated through formalised client facing areas, digital displays and meeting areas and highly collaborative work zones that encourage staff to cross pollinate amongst each project discipline. It is that evolution of constant transition within the office that creates this hub of constant activity and collaboration. The fitout offers high flexibility for the business to evolve and adapt and for staff to create their own spaces if they want to move away from their designated work zones. The project was developed to encourage ‘bump’ moments to promote interactions, socialising and conversations outside of a meeting room or work point. DESIGN CHALLENGE The project faced the ultimate challenge; being completely constructed during a global pandemic. Processes were adapted to make the experience smooth, easy and fun for the client, despite the challenges of a project being constructed in a strict Melbourne lockdown. The client’s previous office was transformed into a temporary showroom, with entire furniture package samples and options set up for review and selection based on not being able to attend any showrooms. The head contractor appointment, workshops and PCG meetings were conducted over video conferencing. The full project team’s collaboration, determination, perseverance and ability to adapt led to a successful project completion. SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability was a key aspiration for the project. Specifications of all the finishes, fittings and furniture throughout the entire project were selected based on their ability to achieve a five-star rating. The base build flooring, ceiling finishes over the working floors and throughout the open areas were maintained where possible to minimise wastage. The showcase level maintained the exposed base building shell to minimise the use of additional materials. Low VOC paints and indoor planting has been implemented to improve air quality and staff wellbeing.

s North Sydney’s first premium grade commercial tower, 1 Denison was designed to set new benchmarks in both experience and design for its signature tenants including Microsoft, SAP and Nine. As a 5 Star Green Star building, targeting 5 Star NABERS Energy and WELL V2 Platinum, the building had wellness and sustainability at its core. A key element of this approach was Nest, a holistic wellness amenity created exclusively for the use of the 1 Denison community. WHAT WAS THE DESIGN BRIEF? Siren was engaged to design a community wellness centre, consultation room with the flexibility to offer seminars and classes for the tenants of 1 Denison. Siren’s concept was to design an immersive space where all human senses were enlightened. A place you could truly escape from the busy office environment and be able to harness that inner peace and mindfulness we all thrive on.

NEST 076
ELEVATING HEALTH AND WELLNESS Health and wellness spaces are often traditionally placed in the basement of buildings, spaces with no natural light and the worst position in the building. At 1 Denison, health and wellness are literally placed at the core of the building with the wellness centre located in prime position on Level 23 - a symbolic and innovative move by the building owners, Winten Property Group. Winten realised that the creation of community and the focus on health and wellness would help to engage and invigorate all those who are fortunate enough to have 1 Denison as their workplace. By locating the health and wellness centre on one of the upper levels of the building, on a floor that would traditionally be tenanted, Siren had the opportunity to maximise the wonderful natural light and breathtaking views of North Sydney, Manly Heads and the Blue Mountains beyond. As such, the design for the space was focused on natural light, greenery, views and a more human-centric approach, ensuring the space became a true hub and destination point for the tenant community.

UNEXPECTED DELIGHTS Feeling well equates to feeling human and feeling grounded. The entry experience of Nest is a long corridor which is an experiential journey that gradually delights as you reach your destination. The aim is to exude a sense of curiosity, discovery and wonder inspired by the wonder of exploring caves as a child - glimpses of light and darkness, roughness of rocks contrasted with glossy water and unexpected delights. The design creates unexpected delights through human senses within the space. For example, pockets of light, biophilia, art and touch, raw and earthy materials contrasted with polished smooth finishes. Cold water contrasts with healing hot tea smells, essential oil diffusers and seasonal floral arrangements. This combines with the sound of water, tranquil music and silence. The slanted base build façade kept the building perimeter clear to heighten the base build architectural feature and fully benefit from the views from level 23. Being placed at such a high level also served as an acoustic barrier and Siren worked closely with an acoustic

engineer to achieve that sense of quiet and peace. Siren also purposely removed the mirror from the vanity area and made an anti-space where shoes are taken off to feel the natural material on bare feet. A space where visitors can truly reflect on their inner self and hone into that energy rather than superficial reflection. The centre is multi-purpose in use and designed to provide a balanced workday for the modern professional and plays host to services such as circuit training, yoga and dance classes, community and arts workshops whilst also offering personal services such as massage, physiotherapy, personal training, suit tailoring and career coaching. As humans we need movement and time to reflect. We spend so much of our lives in the work environment, that it is essential be fit and well to be productive and healthy. We also need to engage the senses. Nest is an immersive space where all human senses are enlightened. Pops of IDP’s signature blue and orange stand out around the new office, along with green spaces that complement the building’s Greenstar rating. Rooms solely for staff wellbeing abound, including relaxation rooms and a gratitude area. Meanwhile, future-focused technology makes the space accessible to all teams in more than 30 countries. Plants and biophilic design are abundant, responding to studies showing plants reduce worker fatigue. Water stations are placed around the office, encouraging hydration and movement during the day. The office is also designed to be future-proofed for the post-pandemic work environment, by fostering collaboration and promoting wellbeing, with best practice design in place to support employee health. The innovative and creative interiors are what landed IDP Education and Siren Design the 2021 DrivenxDesign Melbourne Design Gold Award for Interior Design in the education category. The project was the first that Siren commenced and completed during Covid 19 during Victoria’s strict lockdown. This, says Siren Design Melbourne’s managing director and co-owner Nicole Pollak, adds “another layer of pride in the achievement of an award win within a new world and a new way of working, with a team that was able to so seamlessly adapt to virtual design collaboration”.

IDP chose Siren as they believed the design firm would be a good match for their diverse needs. IDP also has a commitment to gender balance, inclusivity, and driving positive change. As such, Siren’s all women management team was a drawcard, along with the company’s focus on sustainability in design. In collaboration with Siren, IDP has created a safe space that enables different working and learning styles to flourish, from smaller two-person corners, to larger open collaboration spaces. “The design is also anchored in the IDP brand values and community in order to create a space IDP can feel both comfortable in, and proud of,” says Pollak. “Underpinning this, sustainability of every product and material in the construction and furnishing of the project was a key priority and the fitout was proudly designed to WELLS Platinum and Greenstar 5 star certification.” IDP’s commitment to their connected international community drove the design, with bridging moments of interaction and collaboration that were incorporated into the design and denoted by defined ceiling features, light and bursts of IDP’s brand colours, representing a

nown as Cambooya, the family office of The Vincent Fairfax Foundation was designed to be humble and functional for both family and foundation. A space designed for both the operational aspects of the Vincent Fairfax Foundation and members of the Fairfax family to work, meet and gather. Timeless, professional and approachable, the project’s beauty lies in the detailing and natural materiality. Cambooya designed to be a space of storytelling and a physical expression of the values and origins of the family. Vistas of the Botanic Gardens and the spectacular Sydney Harbour can be seen from a large portion of the floor, creating the ultimate natural back drop for Cambooya’s rurally inspired humble home. The design is a warm, welcoming embrace with a mix of refined and rural. With a high level of functionality and flexibility in a compact environment, each area of the floor plate was maximised for purpose. Cambooya is a space that is highly considered and connected. Every material was deliberate in its selection and execution, and every aspect had to have complete flexibility and functionality.

THE BRIEF The client brief was to create a space that was humble, refined and timeless. The space had to be efficient, multi-functional and allow for business operations and to also play host to events for the foundation charities. It is also acts as a private, secure space where the Fairfax family members can drop in work, meet and relax and have functions.

Siren’s design response was to use a modern Australian palette throughout the space, reflecting the rural history and legacy of the town of Cambooya itself. Despite being a corporate fit-out, the space has a very residential feel - almost like walking into a beautiful penthouse rather than a corporate office. The space is highly considered and connected. Every material was deliberate in its selection and execution. All spaces are connected in major design elements and materials but also minute joinery detailing. The design is efficient and multi-purpose to answer the requirements of both the family and the business. It exhibits a high level of functionality in a compact space with hidden storage and every square metre maximised for purpose. Flexibility for functions and events was also paramount – and as such, the boardroom opens up to a central breakout allowing the sweeping harbour views to take pride of place. Connection between reception and breakout are also enabled through mesh screens which provide security, whilst allowing the heart of the office to be seen. The brief required a secure, yet connected reception, meeting spaces, a flexible boardroom capitalising on the beautiful views of the harbour and botanical gardens. In addition, it required a large flexible breakout area, hotel-style amenities and ABW style workspace for 30 plus people.
THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO HIT THE FUNCTIONAL BRIEF, WHILST GETTING THE SPACE PLANNING SPOT ON. THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF CAMBOOYA WAS THE LEVEL OF DETAILING AND COORDINATION BETWEEN SIREN DESIGN AND THE BUILDERS, FDC TO REALISE A SOPHISTICATED AND COHERENT DESIGN WHERE EVERY ELEMENT, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, WAS CONSIDERED.

CAMBOOYA 098
A CHALLENGE IN SPACE PLANNING At a tight 515sqm, space planning had to be very efficient, the fit-out is compact, yet had to accommodate many functions, and as a result, every metre of space is utilised for storage – often in multifunctional ways. The greatest challenge of this project was to hit the functional brief, whilst getting the space planning spot on. The key to the success of Cambooya was the level of detailing and coordination between Siren Design and the builders, FDC to realise a sophisticated and coherent design where every element, no matter how small, was considered. The visual connection of the spaces allows for a seamless flow of spaces. The detailing is impeccable and connects all spaces on a micro level. This level of detail extended to the impeccable styling - taking this fit-out to the next level for workplace design. The resulting design created a designated private and functional sanctuary for the family members to work relax and meet. The result is an approachable, welcoming, yet refined high-end space that the family enjoy.

T
he challenge of this project was for Siren to design their own workplace for their Singapore studio. Having created the Singapore business from scratch in 2012, this project represented Siren’s coming of age in the Asia region and the team were determined to inspire a sense of community and create an environment that would hold true to Siren’s purpose: to enable people to thrive. The project was Siren’s opportunity to take everything they had learnt from other client projects and translate it into their own studio environment to create a dynamic community and a home away from home for the Siren team. THE DESIGN BRIEF The brief was anchored in the heart of Siren’s purpose: to enable people to thrive. The team also wanted to create a physical manifestation of the Siren brand philosophy that ‘it’s what’s on the inside that matters’.
TOP & LEFT: Welcome to Siren’s dining table. As the first space you are greeted with when entering the studio, the concept was to encourage ideation, meetings and presentations here.

SIREN DESIGN SINGAPORE
Siren’s response was to draw on their years of experience designing from some of the biggest companies in Asia Pacific, along with the creation of communities and co-working spaces, and to put those learnings into practice. To realise an environment that created a dynamic community, that was creative and clever and that helped to inspire design thinking. They also wanted to ensure that the space was highly functional, efficient and multi-use. A place that could work for their team, be a living example of Siren’s design philosophy, and to also serve as a hub for clients, suppliers and consultants.
104
THE HISTORY Siren’s previous office was in the JustCo co-working space. A space Siren had also designed for a client they had worked with for years. This philosophy of immersing themselves in their own designs has been a powerful process from which the whole team gets to experience their designs in action and to learn from it and bring it to each new design. As Siren outgrew the JustCo space, they realised that they had an opportunity to create their own design hub, and to put all of their design thinking into action.

SIREN’S KEY DRIVERS WERE TO BRING THEIR PURPOSE AND MISSION TO LIFE. THEY TOOK A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH, ENGAGING WITH THEIR TEAM AND FOCUSED ON BEING LEAN AND EFFICIENT, TO REDUCE WASTE AND MAXIMISE RE-USE WHERE POSSIBLE. THEIR APPROACH WAS REALLY A FORM OF ‘INSIDE OUT’ ARCHITECTURE. FOCUSING ON THE PEOPLE AND THE COMMUNITY FIRST, AND THEN EXPANDING THAT TO THE PHYSICAL FORM.

INSIDE OUT ARCHITECTURE Siren’s key drivers were to bring their purpose and mission to life. They took a collaborative approach, engaging with their team and focused on being lean and efficient, to reduce waste and maximise re-use where possible. Their approach was really a form of ‘inside out’ architecture. Focusing on the people and the community first, and then expanding that to the physical form. The studio was designed around places for purpose, focusing on flexibility, diversity of space and wellbeing. They collaborated with their suppliers and workshopped everything with the team to ensure that the space catered for everyone’s work style and was clear about what helped people to be their best, and to also put into play their knowledge of how to create a community and ensure multi-use and high efficiency at every step. Siren’s approach was to have no single-use spaces. Finding ways to use the physical environment to inspire the best in people. Siren used strategies they call ‘ripples’ and ‘totems’ which serve to anchor people in the space and bring to them together. One of the first things you see when you enter Siren’s space is the ‘dining table’. Siren wanted the concept of entering a home. A place where you are welcome. That dining table also doubles as holding space when you arrive and a place for client or supplier collaborations to happen.

The resulting design means that everyone has a sit to stand desk, there is ample opportunity to move round the space. There is hydration in two areas of the floorplate and spaces to do yoga in the mornings, and also host drinks once a month with suppliers and swap ideas and learn about new products and approaches. The boardroom, break out space and library are connected as Siren wanted to have workshops and innovations spaces to bring in clients and consultants and trouble shoot in one place to create an open and collaborative area. It all works like a giant jigsaw where you can move elements, shift them around and then clip them into place. This project represents the expression of Siren’s insights and learnings from years of designing from clients. It’s a true example of collaboration and it’s a place where the team love to be. This is truly Siren’s home away from home.

Featuring 21st-century design and engineering, this innovative chair responds to your body’s weight and movement, intuitively providing instant ergonomic comfort to lessen the strain on your back and spine. “When you’re sitting, regardless of what posture you’re in, you’re always in contact with the seat,” says James Ludwig, Vice President of Global Design and Engineering at Steelcase. “People talk a lot about back pain, but if you think about it, that pain is often because of your glutes or hamstrings or your core. It’s a systemic issue. That’s why the seat was so important.” Unlike ordinary work chairs, Steelcase Karman’s patented hybrid seat comprises a suspension seat with integrated cushioning and an ultralight frame. A weightactivated mechanism adjusts automatically as soon as
you sit down or change position. This ensures maximum comfort even when you remain seated for hours while helping to eliminate painful pressure points on your legs and body. Steelcase Karman’s Intermix mesh is another noteworthy element that contributes to the chair’s incredible ergonomic support. A proprietary performance textile using the patented Shrinx technology, the Intermix mesh does not sag or feels stiff. When combined with the chair’s flexible frame, Steelcase Karman supports any sitting posture, whether you are sitting upright or leaning sideways. Aesthetic-wise, there are many colour possibilities to match your preferences, thanks to an exciting palette consisting of 13 proprietary Intermix colours and a variety of Lux finishes. Built with planet Earth in mind, Steelcase Karman uses sustainable materials and the least number of components necessary to foster a lower carbon footprint.
