MORE TO INSPIRE As we traverse the world of design in this new normal, design possibilities and inspired innovations are limitless - as this edition’s projects and iconic pieces show.

I

t has been such a design-inspired experience putting together this edition of Office Concept. As we witness one excellent design after another, we gain a fresh perspective on the talent and ideas that will inspire the design world in the future.

I would like to extend my gratitude to SCA for contributing a gallery of fantastic workplace design projects that are stimulating to the mind and soul. Their design approach, while unique, seamlessly addresses current needs in the contemporary work environment. For instance, the vibrant Tcube project with its streamlined details and the ultra-colourful Ubisoft office truly take on an unconventional theme to set themselves apart from ordinary workspaces. On the furnishing front, I am impressed by the sheer ingenuity of the Phlox chair and table collection by Okamura. For agile offices, the Artiv workstations by Bristol would definitely take productivity to the next level. Other noteworthy pieces in this issue include the Monet chair by Kokuyo as well as the Eyla collection from Girsberger. Do you still want more? We have more coming up next issue – stay tuned for even more eye-opening projects from PAND Design. In the meantime, please stay safe and check out our website for more inspiration! Happy reading!

his concept makes use of colours to create a vibrant workspace for this institution. We wanted to give the client an environment suited to the company’s high energy, creativity and youthful nature. We therefore created an open concept design highlighted by the clever interplay of bright colours and white surfaces. Layers of colour saturate the walls, carpets and furnishings, creating a strong visual impact to demarcate different spaces in a fluid transition. A rainbow sequence is created through a series of meeting rooms, open-plan workspaces and breakout areas. The general workspace itself boasts a total transformation from the previous traditional office configuration – employees now have full flexibility to select from a variety of work settings depending on their activities. The new open plan environment has different zones for activities

night Frank’s new office in Singapore reflects the firm’s status as a global real estate consultancy. The firm’s vision was for the workspace to embody its history and values, while also fulfilling the need for an agile new working environment that energised and inspired staff. The new work environment personified modern professionalism– bright and energetic, comfortable and warm, with a hint of playfulness. Occupying almost 14,000 sq ft in Ocean Financial Centre, the dynamic office is designed with productivity in mind. cube is a hybrid multi-use space by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) that was developed as a platform to help various stakeholders in the tourism industry move towards digital transformation. It represents a safe space for collaboration, to learn, test, and build, bringing like-minded partners together to leverage the right digital resources. The name Tcube comes from the three Ts—Tourism, Technology, and Transformation—which form T3 or Tcube. Thus, the logo for this space features the letter T encased in the shape of a cube with a pattern inspired by digital code, the backbone of today’s technology. Given the nature of Tcube, the design philosophy for the Workplace Interior was based on creating a dynamic and safe environment where users would be inspired to explore, share and discover. With the ‘digital’ keyword everpresent within the space, it was also paramount to create a balance in the design, so as not to overwhelm visitors with more processes that could inhibit experimentation.

TOP & LEFT: Warm lighting, cozy seating, and timber flooring make a very comfortable combination.

OFFICECONCEPTDESIGN.COM

TCUBE 040

One major challenge was that its layout branches out to two dead ends. This made it tricky to introduce a flow that encourages innovation but at the same time provides the balance of varying spaces that adapts to each group of users, while still supporting connectivity, both planned and organic. Through a partnership with the design thinking firm, Thinkplace, research was conducted to understand the culture and goals of the tourism industry. The result was a layout that had highly malleable corridors and common walkways, which can be easily adapted to suit the unique needs of each user. This versatility also makes it easier to test out different prototypes within the space.

TOP: Intent on showcasing creativity, even the ceiling can stop you in your tracks and gaze in awe.

GIVEN THE NATURE OF TCUBE, THE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY FOR THE WORKPLACE INTERIOR WAS BASED ON CREATING A DYNAMIC AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHERE USERS WOULD BE INSPIRED TO EXPLORE, SHARE AND DISCOVER. WITH THE ‘DIGITAL’ KEYWORD EVER-PRESENT WITHIN THE SPACE, IT WAS ALSO PARAMOUNT TO CREATE A BALANCE IN THE DESIGN, SO AS NOT TO OVERWHELM VISITORS WITH MORE PROCESSES THAT COULD INHIBIT EXPERIMENTATION.

TCUBE 044 TOP: Clever space planning has resulted in the space having different areas to chill, conduct discussions, or even to socialize.

BOTTOM LEFT: Spacious, bright, and inviting Tcube sets the bar high on how a space should look like in the ‘new norm’.

BOTTOM RIGHT: Futuristic elements can be found throughout the space and it contrasts well with the warm ambience.

Beyond spatial planning, sensory activations were also incorporated within Tcube to balance out the digital interventions. A perforated ceiling design enables a dappled spotlighting effect on common walkways creating a more immersive experience that engages with the users as they move through Tcube. This also serves as a meditative transition subtly nudging them to step out of their comfort zone to innovate. Taking inspiration from Singapore’s moniker as a Garden City, the signage and interiors within Tcube offer a combination of biophilic and digital-centric designs. The various rooms within Tcube are themed with different colours including from green, representing growth, pink reflecting the blossoming of fresh ideas and finally yellow to signify fruition. This is juxtaposed with the futuristic typography and icons on all signage. As Tcube is meant for hosting events and meetings, there will be a higher footfall compared to a conventional office. This amplifies the importance of wayfinding for this space. The challenge was to identify and reinforce the different spaces within a relatively small area and to incorporate the names provided by the client. This resulted in hanging signs or glass panel stickers echoing the curved and angled lines of the interior spaces.

TOP: Colours play an integral part as they have a significant representation within the space.

alo IT is a global innovation consultancy dedicated to transforming businesses by embracing new technology. This ethos is directly reflected through SCA’s design of their workplace interiors which breaks the stereotype of the traditional office and embraces new and interesting ideas. One of the benefits of work-from-home arrangements is greater privacy and a sense of hygge. However, this remoteness is detrimental when it comes to collaborative work. The new Palo IT office interiors aims to create an effective middle ground for their employees by offering a relaxed environment that is still equipped with purposedriven spaces for collaboration.

The office is designed with a wide array of zones, each fulfilling its own purpose. These are designed to be functional and flexible, adapting to the needs of users. The design planning for the workplace interiors also included a clear separation between lively and calm zones This means break out areas, communal and recreational areas are on one side of the office, encouraging social interaction, whilst on the other, a calm zone is created for deep working sessions. In addition to the homey vibe, the designers also decided to bring the outside in via various pockets of greenery, spread throughout the office space.

oche, a global pioneer in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics focused on advancing science to improve people’s lives, requested a redesign of their office in Singapore, a space spanning three floors. They wanted to create a working environment focused on purpose and performance while still having a comfortable design to improve their employees’ experience at work. It also had to adhere to the global directive of being a timeless expression of spartan elegance, and offer inclusivity and diversity with some local context. The result was a minimalistic and muted interior design, without excessive elements. Black or white cupboards were paired with walls of the same tone to keep the monochromatic vibe. Touches of green, coral pink and light blue were subtly introduced throughout the office, some within wall cubbies that doubled as isolated work areas, while others were on the carpets or ceilings. To add warmth, natural finishes like wood were used throughout the workplace.

ROCHE DIAGNOSTICS 056

A moss wall was also included in the entrance area while plants that have low water consumption were arranged throughout the office not only for aesthetics but also as space dividers. This project proved particularly complicated as during the design process as last year, the pandemic hit and Roche requested for a complete rethinking of the workplace to address a post-COVID-19 work environment. One of the main changes was the increase in flexible working spaces, ones that could be repurposed and reconfigured for a wide variety of use. These include more shared spaces to foster collaboration and socialisation which will bring warmth and energy to the workplace.

The working areas were designed for a range of postures - seated, stool height, lounging, perching, standing. At the entrance, a paint splatter design in bold, invigorating colours accentuates the primary feature wall, along with a decal of Singapore’s landscape to create a lively atmosphere. The arresting visuals make for a compelling focal point that greets guests upon entry and leaves a lasting impression. The private meeting rooms were named after iconic locations in Singapore, such as Arab Street, Botanic Gardens and Joo Chiat, and were decorated with aesthetic features that are representative of the respective locations. anulife envisioned an office that would allow employees to feel that they are “living the brand” and arrange their work environment to best suit their needs. The new office, spanning over 100,000 sqft, is designed to improve collaboration between employees, express transparency with clients, and embrace the future strategy of the brand. Entering the office, we were greeted by a warm and inviting reception area, featuring a harmony of marble and timber, while a nearby green wall adds a natural touch. The open concept layout encompasses dedicated zones for workstations, communal spaces, work cafés and meeting rooms across all levels. Each zone is strategically planned to strike a balance between collaboration areas and quiet spaces. A unique feature is the phone booth area’s red/green light indicator on the ceilings to signify availability. To enhance the user experience, the indicator is positioned to be visible throughout the floor plate.

To suit the various demands of meetings and social activities, furniture was carefully selected to sport a bold interplay of vibrant colours, evoking a living room-like setting. The interiors are completed with environmental wayfinding solutions, sporting distinctive signage to bolster navigation, and cleverly applying the secondary corporate colours of the company to demarcate the quadrants of the offices on all floor plates. Enhancing the firm’s ethos of interacting with people, a customer-centric experience was conceptualised in the public-facing customer service area. The customer service team welcomes visitors, and consultants attend to customers. Customers can be chaperoned to a more private seating area, behind a metal screen with warm copper undertones and cool stainless steel along with a trim of gold accents.

foremost AEC company in Southeast Asia, the stakeholders at ONG&ONG had one objective in renovating their Singapore office: evolve the workspace for the people within. It epitomizes an office with a disruptive mindset. To realize greater agility in sync with the latest technologies, the new office melds all disciplines, promoting seamless work processes. This, in turn, improves the functionality of the workspaces, fostering greater collaboration with long shared tables for hot-desking. Prior to the renovation, SCA Design worked cohesively to analyze each discipline’s modus operandi.
