THE BEAUTY OF CHANGE As human beings, we are always in the process of evolving. Change can be painful, but it can also be a good thing. There may be times when we are thrown off our feet by a sudden shift in plans. Hurled off the deep end, we are forced into sink or swim mode, to adapt or die.
I
n this latest issue, we celebrate the act of boldly forging forth into uncertain territory and the potential of the unknown. Necessity is the mother of invention, and nowhere is this more apparent than in design. Designers deliberately seek out change because it paves the way for innovation. Moving beyond conventions, they open themselves up to thoughtful new solutions that affect the way we live and work. Modern office landscapes are undergoing a rapid metamorphosis as we speak. While thoughtless design was once associated with the standard-issue cubicle office by default, some users have lately begun to feel the same about open offices, lamenting that these temples to millennial musings aren’t all that they are cracked up to be. That goes to show that there are no black-and-white, good or bad solutions – only gray areas that we wade through to uncover what works for us individually. Industry practitioners such as Malaysian studio Designtone, who we feature in the following pages, tap into this dynamic with a view on creating interiors that say as much about people as they do about space. I’d like to thank them for collaborating with Office Concept and for sharing their exceptional projects with us yet again. I would also like to show my appreciation to Milliken for their significant contribution to this issue. We look forward to developing a fruitful, longstanding relationship with you. Finally, I’d like to acknowledge our readers for continuing the Office Concept journey with us. You might have noticed our enhanced layout and expanded Entrée section. These refinements were made with your reading pleasure in mind. Please enjoy them with our compliments.

TIMELESS COOL It’s hard to go wrong with a table as fetching as the Soffio. Designed by Antonio Citterio for Flexform, this piece personifies understated style, turning heads as either a writing table or coffee table. Its daringly articulated base is a huge part of its charm, exuding elegance in either the home or office. Poised on inverted L-shaped legs that bump up the drama, the Soffio’s solid wood top makes it a true classic in the making.

GETTING TONED Pablo, a new modular wonder by Orlandini Design for Girsberger, is pretty much everything you would look for in a modern lounge chair. This two-tone seat hits all the right notes aesthetically thanks to its sculptural frame. Its tactile upholstery engenders surfaces that are comforting to the touch, making long periods of lounging all the more appealing. Adaptable to any seating configuration, the Pablo range also includes a side table, working table and a sofa. girsberger.com
HUFF AND PUFF Dutch designer Marcel Wanders is no stranger to bold juxtapositions. His brow-raising design, Monster Barstool Divina Melange for Moooi, more or less confirms this notion. A conventional steel barstool frame is turned on its head with a flamboyant puffy skin, giving it a cartoon-like semblance. Like a dress-up doll, the stool’s ‘outfit’ is available in 25 upbeat shades from Moooi’s unique Divina Melange colour range, ensuring for easy customisation.

THE SPACE WITHIN The Cega seat brings on the drama with an aesthetic that says as much about utility as it does about style. Composed of a profile cut tubular construction that features advanced internal heat welded vertical fluted upholstery, this edgy number makes working in an open office or public space a dream. Reducing peripheral vision and external noise, the design offers the sitter ample privacy and space for concentration. The open top is a thoughtful add-on, allowing for the perfect diffusion of ambient light.

STAND AND DELIVER Brought to life by Axia Design for Dutch design house Prooff, the #009 StandAlone takes on the concept of a protective coat. Upholstered in fabric, its characteristic acoustic base wraps poetically around the solo user, coming across as a futuristic cocoon of sorts. Whether focusing on one’s laptop, smartphone or just vying for a private moment while standing up, the #009 StandAlone is a convenient sanctuary, shielding one from excess commotion and distraction. prooff.com
BENT ON PERFECTION German seating solutions company Girsberger doesn’t disappoint when it comes to epic tables that do everything you want them to. The extendable Yoho table is one such example. The bent flat sections of its steel base connect to form an elegant ‘V’ at opposing ends, complementing the solid wood tabletop. Its streamlined frame may scream bare-bones minimalism but a closer look reveals a score of handsome details that give this piece so much personality.

SPLENDID STRUCTURE Jason Miller’s quietly provocative works take a direct cue from his upbringing in an American suburb. Beneath the swank and polish of its aesthetic, Miller’s Modo chandelier exhibits a hint of that edge, prompting one to take a closer second look. Engineered and custom CNC-milled from solid aluminium, its melding of formal and informal elements takes a cue from inexpensive off-the-shelf light parts. Allowing for dozens of configurations, this versatile fixture is truly a thing of beauty. rollandhill.com
AHEAD OF THE CURVE The late Italian designer Joe Colombo was a frequent Oluce collaborator that was much beloved by the brand. Relaunched in his memory, the Coupé lamp is one of Colombo’s most iconic light pieces. Making waves with its overtly arched frame and semi-spherical lamp head, its complex structure adds to its enduring appeal. A groove base with a special plastic handle facilitates the adjustment of the enameled sheet metal lamp head, giving rise to movement and visual impact. oluce.com
GIVE IT A REST An indispensible part of Vitra’s Alcove product family, the Alcove Plume by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec is a low-slung sofa with exceptional support. Indicative of its namesake, the piece’s cozy upholstery, quilted side and back panels make it an irresistible spot to snuggle up in any time of the day. This feeling of casual comfort is additionally reinforced by plush seat cushions that snugly bolster the sofa’s width. So go on, put your feet up. vitra.com spacefurniture.asia

orn between working in a café or an office? The Goodwood table by Schiavello might just be your answer. Envisioned by Doshi and Levien, one of the most acclaimed design duos in the business, this pleasing piece toes the line between a boardroom and a relaxed social setting. The happy result is a memorable design that enables one to feel grounded while on the job, giving rise to enhanced productivity and more stimulating work processes. Presented as a pair of tables or standalone pieces, the Goodwood’s curved shapes and visible absence of straight lines are directly indicative of its chosen name, which references a historic motorsport venue in the United Kingdom. The racetrack-inspired tabletop and its smaller, circular counterpart overlap when combined, culminating as a beautifully balanced stand that accommodates everything from a laptop to an exquisite vase. Users are spoiled for choice with respect to colour and material options. Tabletops are available in either toughened glass or MDF rendered in powder coated or painted finish from the Schiavello ColourLab range. Unique to the design is also a pair of domed legs in powder-coated steel that prance off the ground and connect with an American oak frame brandishing a natural clear or painted finish. Whether positioned before a sofa or a cluster of chairs, the Goodwood’s homely, low profile structure brims with allure and utility. What’s not to love? schiavello.com

MILLIKEN CELEBRATES MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY WITH LOCAL DESIGNERS
T
his year, Milliken & Company celebrates 150 years of innovating with the purpose to ‘do good’ in the world. The achievement highlights the company’s storied history, which has produced a breadth of innovations, created by teams around the world. Milliken recently visited Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore for a roadshow of cocktail celebrations to honor the milestone anniversary and thank local architects and designers. “Reaching 150 years in business is a tribute to our company’s approach to meaningful innovations and a testament to our customers’ loyalty and belief that together, we can create purpose-driven design solutions,” shared Milliken’s Design and Marketing Director in Asia, Elizabeth Kang. Milliken was founded in 1865 as a small woolen fabrics jobbing firm in Portland, Maine, USA. Since then, the company has grown into a global enterprise with expertise across a variety of disciplines, including specialty chemicals,
performance textiles, and nonwovens, accumulating more than 5,000 patents worldwide. The 1960s and 1970s ushered in innovations that would become the basis for new ventures at Milliken, including the floor covering division. With this expansion, Milliken married ink-jet technology and computer-control-enabled tufted carpet printing to create specialized carpet and rug designs. Milliken’s award-winning floorings have offered great design solutions built from unique insights and an exceptional array of technical capabilities ever since. Unparalleled printing technology and design and color expertise have set Milliken apart in the industry, allowing the company to achieve unprecedented pattern, color, and texture on the floor plane. The results: unique design aesthetics that create inspiring interior environments without forsaking functionality—its popular Color Field collection is a prime illustration.
Even more remarkable is the prominence of Milliken innovations that enhance everyday life in addition to floor covering. You likely interact with Milliken technologies up to 50 times a day, from washable colorants in children’s markers and laundry and dish detergents, which also boost cleaning, to athletic garments that wick away moisture, and even composites that strengthen and lighten plastic, such as those used in TumiTM Tegra-Lite® luggage. Over the last 150 years, Milliken has introduced a number of awardwinning innovations that ‘do good.’ What’s more exciting? The potential of the next 150 years as Milliken works around the world to add true value to people’s lives, improve health and safety, and help make this world more sustainable. millikencarpet.com

fter 3 years since its inception there seem neither stopping nor slowing down in Designtone’s relentless pursuit towards pushing design boundaries and exploration of different design genre and style. Not contented with only doing interior architecture, Designtone has now ventured into architecture. With an architectural background coupled with 17 years experience in interior architecture, its founder and Creative Director, Joe Chan has set new challenges and aspiration to its dedicated team to explore designing spaces looking from ‘inside out’. The result was evident from some of its latest work. Not short of bold and stunning, it’s is also intricate and add values to the client’s brief. “I am tapping into my young teams different design disciplines. We have architects, interior designers, graphic designers, visualizer, project managers and artist so it’s natural that we try not to limit our potentials. Therefore our design should have a holistic approach where we combined all these creatives into the spaces we design. In fact recently we took up conceptualising landscaping for one of our building projects and our client was very happy with the results thou we are not the landscape consultant. “Joe said. “And you are right, we are not resting on our laurels, we want to continue pushing in our design approach and not be contented with what we already know, and try to do more on what we do not know” Joe added. With their design ethos, we are sure to see more of their distinctive works in the very near future. So keep a look out for what is coming from Designtone. designtone.net

igital gadgets are replacing our traditiongames. How many of us understand the beauty of traditional games. Here we attempt the best way to integrate traditional games into physical environment to educate the younger generation in an abstract form. Gasing – one of the traditional games for the Malay community. There are few origins to the stories about gasing; one of the most relevant to our design philosophy about “gasing” was derived from Buah Bergembang. This fruit usually grow along the coastal area. Ga-Sing = Ga: Light and Straight + “Sing” : Spinning This story inspired us about the sturdiness of gasing that can be reinterpret to the children.
Children’s behavior - Lively & Energetic provides the surrounding to be lively. The energy activate the solitude of the environment. Physical structure as a media to provide shelter and core of activity.

hen Fonterra’s Global Business Services announced the establishment of a new shared service centre in Kuala Lumpur to support its customer base in Asia, Middle East and Greater China, Designtone saw the need to keep the design philosophy true to the product’s values–pure, natural and subtly impactful. This is reflected immediately to visitors upon arrival at the reception area, where visitors can instantly gauge the nature of Fonterra’s business and its connection to the natural environment. Evolution from the briefs conceptual stage to completion was achived through the maximisation of natural sunlight, and use of earthy pallets with added textures such as woodgrain panels, timber flooring, and embossed carpet tiles that almost mimics artificial turf.
TOP: Open plan system for better communication and interactions.
These different materials are then continued throughout the headquarters to make appearance alongside each other within each of the designated zones, symbolizing aptly the collaborative and interconnectivity of people, and environment, which Fonterra thrives on. Set over approximately 7000 sqft internal space and an additional 730 sqftoutdoor balcony on the 16th floor of Puchong Financial Corporate Tower, the brief was to cater to an open office area, plenty of casual collaboration corners, meeting rooms, boardrooms, and large breakout area while maximising on the outdoor balcony.

The Fonterra spatial elements are designed to work individually and collectively to create areas for group collaborations and individual privacy, whilst also fulfilling ergonomic requirements and media integration. Bearing this into philosophy,Designtone tastefully creates zones that enhance the productivity and the well-being of the company’s employees by facilitating various ways of working such as meeting, presenting, learning, brainstorming, focusing, or even winding down in a meaningful, fresh and easy-on-theeye ambience.

n continuation to a wonderful and successful working relationship with Nestle Malaysia, Designtone was once again selected to revitalize its current reception and holding area at Level 22, Surian Tower, Petaling Jaya. Working closely with Nestle Malaysia, the designer transformed the existing office into a new rejuvenated outlook that allow more spaces for collaboration, engaging to both visitors and staff and also reflective of the company’s work culture and corporate identity. Going back to basic fundamental of design, extensive attention was given to the space planning, shapes, form, textures, colours and material to provide an energetic and vibrant office environment not forgetting its brand presence.

he end-result makes an impactful statement as soon as one enters the corporate office. Visitors first encounter a reception area whose most striking feature is an egg-shaped solid surface reception counter, nestled within light timber panels that exude a warm welcome. The flow of the space continues to lead visitors further in where an oasis-like area with a feature column takes centerstage, disguising a sore thumb of an existing column in the middle of the space into a point of focus. Two semi-enclosed waiting area doubled up as discussion space offers flexibility as well as conversation starter with its bird nest impression. Rooms are enclosed with glass fronts; this allows maximum natural sunlight penetration into the open space which also evoked a sense of expansion.
The training room area on the other side of the building are connected with the reception cum waiting area through a breakout area which provides a reenergizing atmosphere. Colours and graphics are applied generously in line with client’s vision of having a workplace that breakaway from a typical sterile office. With this refurbishment exercise, the Nestle Malaysia’s office has transformed into a working and collaboration space that has successfully made lasting impressions: of vibrant brightness, creativity, and diversity united to a single purpose. MALAYSIA GUOCERA SHOWROOM 064
T
he Guocera Gallery is designed based on innovative re-thinking of the definition and purpose of a tile showroom. The design interprets Guocera’s tagline of “Life’s Inspiration” through two keywords, experiential and interactive, which form the generators for design. Commonly, the tile showroom is perceived a showcase space packed with as many information and samples of products. Interpreting the tile showroom in an alternative manner, Designtone designed the gallery akin to a space for exhibition of the works of art. In rethinking of the tile showroom, Designtone conceptualized the tiles as an artform, moving beyond the functional capacities of the product while placing the design qualities at the forefront. The Guocera Gallery is conceived as a knowledge and creative incubator which is engaging and experiential, and offers informed knowledge generated through interaction between the designers, the academia, the product expert and the public.
Besides the conception of the gallery as a knowledge and design incubator, the gallery further explores the connections between the product, the designer and the public/audience. Rather than providing the just technical specification and physical information of tiles, the gallery showcases the tiles as works of art, offers a narrative of how they are used and enable the exploration of their use through virtual and simulated environments. This shifts from the typical showroom which offers generalized information, in contrast to the Guocera Gallery that offers a customized knowledge, experience and engagement with the products. Upon entry, the reception area and the selfserve area served as an introductory space for basic information. The virtual deco area, the garden adventure and the white room provides experiential and simulated expressions of spatial forms to be first-hand experienced by the consumer.

he nature of spaces within the gallery is both active and casual, like a design studio, and exhibition that generates inspiration and imagination. For the designers, it becomes a design incubator where they can explore the possibilities of design, or turn it into a co-working space with your colleagues, with the assistance of the product experts. With the surge of avant-garde tiles showroom design, the design of the gallery attempts to innovate the typology of tile gallery by pursuing the question of how can the idea of tile display be pushed further to reach out to the public domain. The intentions of the gallery are achieved through the design of a central exhibition space with other ancillary spaces at its periphery. The central space of the gallery is a unique exploration of a transformative exhibition space. The exhibition space is like a canvas for creativity, spatial connectivity and spatial flexibility and spatial openness that allow artform to flow and weave within its product.

HEDGEFORD MALAYSIA
E
stablished in 1998, Hedgeford started as an investment holding company. Today, they are carving a name for themselves in property development, lifestyle and value creation. In view of their success and company growth, Designtone was commissioned to design, built and provide total solutions to their new office and property gallery. Hendgeford office and property gallery is located at Galleria @ Hedgeford 10, Wangsa Maju, and comprises 4 units of shoplot. The designer took the task in combining the 4 units and make it into a seamless space, visually looking as one total space altogether for the gallery. The strategy is to combine the Guest welcoming counter, open gallery display area, chill-out space, formal and informal meeting room into a main focal area that reflect the core business and corporate identity of the company. Besides that, it also reflects the company’s commitment towards providing a sophisticated work environment and careful consideration of sustainability design in their products. An abstract transformation of part of the company logo was inserted into the main gallery space and anchors it as a prominent feature and backdrop. Adding an oversized minimalist, clean line guest-welcome-counter in front of the backdrop creates a well balanced feature in totality. Left and right of the main gallery are flanked by formal and informal meeting rooms. To add on to the edginess and ‘folly-playing element’ of the entire space, an overly bright yellow break-out nooks was created for a relaxing, chill-out and collaborative area for both visitors and staff. Office work area was positioned behind the gallery, a rather simple and straight forward space planning strategy. The office is planned with rooms for senior management and staffs generally positioned in the open office area with low workstation panels to allow good line of sight all round the office. The office is designed with no fuss - simple, practical and efficient. Though it is simple but the office ambience is not mundane as the designer injected ‘punch’ of colours here and there to liven up and provide the vibrancy to the area. The colours selected are also carefully selected from the company corporate identity guidelines. olar Turbines Incorporated, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial gas turbines, with more than 15,000 units and over 2 billion operating hours in over 100 countries. Its branch office in Malaysia is shared with Turboservices Sdn Bhd (a joint-venture company between Solar Turbines and Deleum Berhad) is located in Menara UOA Bangsar occupying 8300sq.ft of office space. The design layout for the office is both practical and simple. Office layout is planned with open plan workspace with all the general workstation placed in the middle area and along the building perimeter. This is to allow maximum penetration of natural light into the interior. Rooms are generally planned along the core of the building. Taking this approach it allows the overall space to look visually larger and allow staff to communicate better without barriers. Careful selection of colour scheme to the carpets and furniture at this area is essential as the design intention is not having an office that is too overstated. It is important to reflect the sense of professionalism and efficiency.
TOP: Cozy and relzxing breakout area and the funiture that adds character to the space. Yet the colors used are not overstated to reflect the professionalism and efficiency.
TOP RIGHT: The slanted wall and yellow accents brings the visitors in, with the warm welcome of the wood backdrop and graphic that show the business nature of this office.
The reception design is corporate – warm and welcoming with a striking graphic image that reflects the business nature. The signage and backdrop is uncomplicated yet sophisticatedly refined. Breakout area is sizable to allow good spatial circulation, and allow good breathing space to cater for the number of staff. It is also to hold company events. The ambience here is cosy and relaxing, executed by usage of timber on built-in and floor coupled with sizable, fancy lounge chair and to add more character to the place, timber picnic tables are incorporated. Huge feature wall with vintage company photos and graphic is featured to provide a sense of nostalgia and belonging to the staff. Overall the design of the office provide an efficient workspace, sufficient rooms and space for staff collaboration and most importantly a simple approach that reflect the company’s direction and corporate identity.

t has been almost 10 years that Starcom Mediavest Group (SMG) and Optimedia Malaysia last renovated their office in the same location at Wisma Olympia, Kuala Lumpur. This year they decided to give it a refreshed outlook and reconfigure their internal offices for better work flow and integration. After many rounds of brainstorm and discussion the project begin with the task of having multiple phases of construction progress as working in this ‘live’ office require detail planning and scheduling. It took almost 3 months to complete without any downtime for the existing office operation. The design gears toward providing a collaborative, innovative and dynamic work space that exemplify the businesses ethos and human experience culture. Simple and minimalist approach can be seen as you enter the reception. Behind it hold a large holding area doubled as visitor lounge and collaborative space for staff to hold events and for recreation. Here you see beanbags, cosy lounge chair, tiered seating to provide an informal, fun and youthful setting.
Throughout the office you see simple and raw materials coupled with open ceiling and a little punch of colours were widely adopted. It epitomized that creative thinking does not need to be complicated. The other areas of the work space are predominately consists of open plan formats to maximize space for the growing number of staffs. It is also a logical approach to encourage better interaction and collaboration within the staff for better work flow. Again the boardroom is simple, clean and practical. It has vast surface for writing as this is where a lot of brainstorming and strategies were adopted. Other walls are lined with metal sheet and corporate identity is injected playfully using lego plate to form partially the company’s logo and area for creative ‘lego doodling’

I
t is remarkable to see how Designtone turned a typical looking small-office-flexible office (SOFO) into a haven for its occupant whom has a penchant to collect Lego and other collectibles, while having his personal work space. The strategy was simple, place in common day metal racking, storage and furniture ‘hack’ to compliment the display. Playing with array of bright colours complimented with neutral hues to bring out a sense of vibrancy to the overall space. Besides these, usage of graphics, customed made details and bold wall featured as seen in the entrance doors and the vintage airplane book shelf gives a quirky touch to the 700 sf space. The cement and timber texture vinyl flooring used were well thought off for its durability and subtly compliments the rest of interior. While some may argue the design is simple but the simplicity pays off very well when all these ideas were combined. The space is indeed inspirational for the owner whom used it for his personal office and brainstorm sanctuary, to get away from his hustle and bustle of daily office routine in his bigger set-up. We were thrilled that living quarter was also hybrid into the unit thus making it a fitting place for work, rest and play. Having a place like this I’m sure a lot of people will be inspired and start considering having a personal pad too.

n Designtone, regardless if you are a junior or a senior designer, the responsibility and task given to the designers are the same. They are tasked to tackle a project from inception to completion. The difference between a junior and senior is only the scale and complexity of a project. By this approach Joe Chan strongly belief that it is the best way for nurturing and building a balanced design team for the experience and inexperienced and it goes strength in strength with one another for collaboration and team work in the design team, ultimately a successful deliverance of a project. There is a lot of education and re-education process conducted in-house, where design processes taught during formative education is relive in the design studio. No shortcut nor cliché design is approved as oppose to a well thought design concept that has richness in content, layers of thought process and value add to a clients brief.
ON NURTURING THE DESIGN TEAM This is strongly enforced as Joe strongly wants the young and old designers, clients or layman to understand that interior designing is different from interior decorators. Interior decoration is part of interior design but never the opposite. Henceforth, the design thought process shall not be eliminated, not just doing mere aesthetically pleasing interior but also with all the underlining meaning. Although this is time consuming and mind taxing, Designtone continue to pursue this philosophy in their practice and appreciation toward this approach has been well received by their supportive clients. More importantly the designers are always thinker first, then doer.

he interior design industry is getting more and more competitive as days goes by. To sustain and stay on top of the race, besides having a good design, project delivery is equally important. When we mention project delivery it will entail also timely completion, quality of works, meeting budget and strive for zero defects. Tony Len, Co-founder and Project Director of Designtone is enforcing this to the project team. At every beginning of the project, together with the project team, construction drawings are meticulously studied. A realistic work program is then generated, taking inconsideration of lead time of materials and loose items. From there on shop drawings, sketches, mockup and small details are progressively done to study the best method of construction and detail for termination for every joints or corners. When construction starts on site, daily tool box meeting is conducted; all health and safety procedures together with full personal protective equipment (PPE) are enforced strictly. Daily housekeeping is done to ensure a clean and safe site. All ingress and egress are not blocked at site.
ON MANAGING A PROJECT Weekly meeting with Client is conducted to manage client expectation and keep them abreast of the progress allow a peace of mind to the client, besides weekly internal trade contractors meeting with all suppliers and subcontractor are also conducted. We normally do a snag list when the project is at 80 percent into its overall progress and at the tail end of the project we normally do a defect list at minimum 2 weeks before handover to check on the quality and defects if any, to be rectified immediately, as we strive for zero defects when we handover to our client, Tony said. Tony further explained, to him the quality of a construction is not only in terms of its flawless appearance but equally important is its durability. Both goes hand in hand besides delivery of a project that meet the budget and timeline.

DESIGNTONE TEAM Q&A Q : There is a lot of corporate office designer in the industry, what do you all think that set your team apart from the rest? A : I believe what makes Designtone shine among others is the unity and compatibility of our team. Were all very diverse individuals especially in our design styles and the way we see the world of design. In reference, to that, we use that diversity to showcase a whole different point of view where we are open to the idea of exploration beyond our comfort zones. We engage and compromise among each other to better ourselves and thus making a much unified team. Q: Can you all please describe the design style of Designtone and why such style? A : The style of Designtone is simple. Designtone does everything and anything. We do minimalistic all the way to industrial but it doesn’t stop there. We love pushing the boundaries of commercially known styles and fusing
it together harmoniously with other different styles and hence our designs can never just be one specific style. Q : With so many projects undertaken and dealing with many requirements from your client based on these experiences, what would you all say will be the corporate design trend for 2016? A : Practical simplism. Definitely. Gone are the days where corporations wanted designs to be flamboyant and ornate. Corporations these days would very much prefer a simplistic concept which puts heavy emphasis on practicality. As for space planning, we would say open and plenty of collaborative space, hotdesking or multi-use desking will continue be popular Q : Nowadays we spent more and more hours in the office, for that matter it is important to have a good workplace. Kindly describe what will constitute as a good workplace for your office?

A : In my opinion, a good workplace constitutes of a dedicated team who understands each other’s strength and weakness. Moreover, it is a company that allows its staff to just get up, go out and be inspired. Nothings worst than an uninspired designer whose just trying to get a job done without any passion or dedication. Activities and team building exercises could be the very first step in achieving a better workplace.
Q : What would you say is the biggest mistake that designers make when designing for a corporate interior. A : The biggest mistake would definitely be not designing with the people using the space in mind. When that happens, designs become fantastic but the level of practicality and convenience is lost in the process. It’s a lot to do with common sense too when designing.
Q : Is there any projects that you particularly like, be it by other designers or Designtone and tell us why? A : To my recollection, I think what we did for AIA would probably be it. It was a huge project to refurbish and rebrand their entire company. We managed to turn their office from a conventional looking office that just exudes a depressing mood into something lively, fun and full of exuberance for the younger generation. Moreover, the challenge of a very tight budget made the self-accomplishment of it to be amplified.

arley is a fitting moniker for possibly one of the most endearing table designs ever launched by Schiavello. The word, derived from the French ‘Parler’, meaning ‘to talk’ in English, has an upbeat and unruffled ring that oozes charm and composure. It’s somehow apt that the term is used in reference to a negotiation or a peaceable discussion. Created in collaboration with Doshi Levien, a London-based design duo known for their exceedingly original takes on form and function, Parley is endowed with a rare quality – it emanates the disposition of a dear, trusted friend upon first glance. Defined by softly rounded work surfaces and robust oak timber legs, its appearance is palpably humble and unimposing. Every inch has been devised with friendly, everyday interactions in mind. The effect, in combination with a sound framework that proffers the option of a tidy floor to tabletop cable management for workspaces, instantly puts one at ease. It’s little wonder that the Parley is as much beloved in the office as in one’s home or a cozy café. It goes without saying that this is a piece that works exceptionally well in both dining and meeting environments, owing to its modern yet timeless aesthetic. A customisable feature takes the Parley’s personable design to a whole other level. While the harmonious pairing of wood and steel is a given with every combo, three varyingly shaped tabletops – round, square, rectangle – finished in either a white MDF lacquer, natural stain or a black and natural veneer with a sharknose edge detail afford users a plethora of appealing choices.

he evidence is mounting. Decades of staffers being shackled to conventional office desks have led to less than stellar results: low productivity, fatigue, premature burn out and cardiovascular diseases. After years of research and experience, experts conclude that movement and variety at work crucially impacts one’s wellbeing and long-term mental and physical health. In short, it’s always a better idea to stay upright and active. Back in the 1960s - well before the term ‘ergonomics’ became a widespread term - two designers went against the grain with the creation of a stool and chair hybrid that encouraged standing at one’s desk. Robert Propst and George Nelson’s idea of a ‘perch’ was revolutionary to say the least, paving the way to what we now know as standing desks or furniture arrangements that flaunt the benefits of being constantly on the move even whilst being in one place. Taking a cue from Propst and Nelson, Herman Miller products adhere unerringly to the idea that if we are able to work better, we also feel better. The Augment desking system is exemplary of this approach. Designed by Herman Miller’s Research and Development Group in Asia-Pacific, the system makes a strong case for thinking on one’s feet. Pushing concept of a ‘Living Office’, Augment facilitates flexibility in the workplace through state-of-the-art technology, comfort and adjustability. Height adjustment is achieved via electric or manual means; the former features an Intelligent Control with a signature sensor and anti-collision chip to avoid bump-ins, enabling the desk to conform to the user’s desired height with the greatest of ease. illiken’s diverse range of floor covering products is transformative. In its own unique way, each design conveys inspiration, mood, and movement. Two new collections, Color Field and Naturally Drawn, illustrate this by examining the power of color, art and nature. COLOR FIELD - Inspired by the large swaths of color represented in the abstract expressionism style of ‘color field’ painting, Color Field, designed by Milliken’s U.S. Design Team, explores the details created when the distinction between subject and background are eliminated. With the ability to discern layers as if they were aged by nature, the collection offers 64 colors to create a quiet floor plane or allow punctuations of color with vibrant hues. The PVC-free plank design offers more organic, naturally gradated patterns shaped by precise color placement, which are only achievable with proprietary high-resolution print technology. An incredible color spectrum helps shape a diverse range of interior environments, from imaginative to sophisticated, and the ability to create large-scale pattern through strategic tile placement allows the floor to be a subtle or dominant architectural experience. Whether its colourful presence is prettifying an indoor or outdoor setting, one can be sure that the Kuark makes a lasting statement in every given space. This distinctive feeling of character can be attributed to how the chair was made. Conceived via a special process called rotational moulding, a non-pressurised moulding technique for plastics that designers have been known to employ to achieve all manner of shapes, the chair’s characteristic, tub-like structure showcases a lively usage of the unexcitingly named plastic known as non-porous polyethylene. A removable cushion makes this the ultimate lounger, allowing for an extended duration of seated ease. apanese office furniture company Kokuyo has added another office-worthy chair to its inventory. Dubbed the Offset Frame chair, the casual stacking chair is the latest collaboration with the prolific Tokyo-based design studio Nendo. Physically light for easy storage and visually light to complement any office setting, the Offset Frame chairs are a welcome addition for spur-of-the-moment meet-ups with fellow employees or informal meetings with clients, not to mention ticking the boxes in terms of other seating qualities: durable, portable, and effortlessly mobile. Streamlined and svelte, the powder-coated metal frame supports a slim-lined but generously wide shell, moulded from a single piece of plastic resin with a unified back and seat. Interestingly, the shell does not sit flush with the frame, which extends beyond the sides and at an angle from the back. Nendo has deliberately introduced this design feature to enable the Offset Frame chair to be pulled out effortlessly by holding onto the back frame, trailed sideways or carried around and stacked with ease, by simply gripping the frame on the side of the seat. And thanks to this design detail, the back frame can also serve triple duty as a hanging rail. The Offset Frame chair is available in three colours and eight different styles, including a basic four-legged version that comes either with or without armrests, and for individuals who enjoy a greater freedom of movement, a single column version resting on a 4-blade base with swivel casters, also available with or without the armrests. Customers can also choose from an array of six colour variations for the shells or opt for detachable fabric and leather covers for a more embellished look. kokuyo-furniture.com

BIOPHILIC DESIGN INTERFACE
“GOOGLE AND APPLE ARE ALREADY SETTING THE GLOBAL STANDARD FOR WORKPLACE DESIGN. NOT ONLY DO THEIR FLAGSHIP OFFICES EMBODY THEIR EXTERNAL BRANDS, THEY ALSO DELIVER A POSITIVE EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE.”
F
lexible working hours and gym-memberships are commonplace offerings among the world’s leading businesses, but perhaps more surprising is the growing focus on how the office environment can help to attract and retain employees. The latest Human Spaces global study1 has revealed that office design would affect a third of office employees’ decisions to work for a company. But when we talk about environment, it’s about much more than aesthetics, it’s about the practical, psychological and business benefits innovative design can bring to employees and businesses. Geoff Dutaillis summed this up in a recent World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) report2: “Whatever business you are in, you are in the business of people. How a building ‘works for people’ should be the priority question.” NATURAL BENEFITS Interestingly, there is a real business case for the benefits of incorporating natural elements into office design. Known academically as biophilia, the concept describes the biological need we have to be continually connected to nature. The impact of biophilic design on employee well-being, productivity and creativity is well documented through a growing body of research. The Human Spaces global study found that incorporating natural elements into office design increased workers’ well-being by 15 per cent, productivity by 6 per cent and creativity by 15 per cent. The gains for organizations that take a biophilic approach have the potential to be huge. LEFT: Workers in biophilic office environments report being 15% more creative. BIOPHILIC DESIGN
INTERFACE
Many current approaches to employee well-being focus on ‘hygiene factors’ and removing barriers that block individual well-being. This could be anything from relocating a noisy printer to replacing uncomfortable seating. While still beneficial, what we’re discovering about biophilic design is that, rather than just removing barriers, it has the potential to be a driver of increased creativity, productivity and well-being. The WorldGBC recently suggested that as employee salaries and benefits make up 90 per cent of the average company’s outgoings, small improvements to workplace environments to increase productivity outweigh construction or occupation costs. Interestingly, the same report suggests that relocating to a low-carbon building is not necessarily healthier for employees. Natural elements, such as daylight and greenery can be a more viable and effective design tool to work for both the people and planet, while minding the bottom line. Google and Apple are already setting the global standard for workplace design. Not only do their flagship offices embody their external brands, they also deliver a positive employee experience. A significant part of this is the incorporation of natural elements in the design which create that beneficial connection to nature. Not to say sustainability should no longer be a consideration, but we should now also be looking more broadly at the positive impact of natural elements as well.

Professor Sir Cary Cooper Cary is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on well‐being and stress at work and is the media’s first choice for comment on workplace issues. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, The Royal Society of Arts, The Royal Society of Medicine, The Royal Society of Health and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Editor‐in‐Chief of the Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Management and the author/editor of over 120 books.
PRESENTEEISM vs PRODUCTIVITY The case for biophilic design becomes even more significant in light of a new global well-being problem - presenteeism. Presenteeism is a relatively new area of study. It is defined as both the act of turning up to work whilst ill, and also of displaying low productivity and engagement at work despite being healthy. Although there are no figures to estimate the cost to employers on a global scale, recent studies3 predict presenteeism is costing UK businesses £1billion and the US more than $200billion4 per year. Although the number of sick days fell by 131 million in the UK last year, recent research suggests the drop is down to strict absence rules and increased presenteeism rather than employee well-being5,6. Interestingly the report7 also revealed that US workers have a significantly lower average at 4.9 sick days per year, while those in Asia take just 2.2 days. Again the low absence levels are attributed to domestic labor market regulation, not healthy workforces. Employees in the US and Asia have more at stake if they take unscheduled time off work. These are big figures, and there is potential for presenteeism to reach crisis levels. Leading organizations should be taking action now. Increasing the well-being of the workforce may help ensure those turning up are healthy, focused and productive. But, patching up problems won’t be enough, the focus needs to be on making fundamental cultural changes that genuinely improve well-being. This is where biophilic design comes into its own; tapping into our innate connection to nature we feel psychological and health benefits that go well beyond a gym membership. All in all, businesses across the world are fighting to win the battle of attracting and retaining top candidates in their sector. To stay ahead of competitors, organizations must prioritise employee well-being, ensuring all aspects of the brand, both internal and external, appeal to happiness, creativity and productivity of employees. humanspaces.com

NOISE IS UNWANTED Noise, or unwanted sound, is a fact of everyday life, especially in a modern workplace. With the increasing need for more flexible working environments to suit a broader range of users, traditional walls have given way to modular furniture systems. More employees use the same space and everyone is seated closer together. This means we are all subjected to more noise. Research findings show that over the last decade, poor acoustics is the number one cause of workplace dissatisfaction and the most significant factor affecting an employee’s productivity. SCENARIO Research proves that it takes an average of 15 minutes to regain concentration after being distracted from a difficult task by unwanted noise. A company employs 200 staff with an average annual salary of RM80,000 per person; annual outlay on wages is therefore RM16 million. If each person is interrupted 5 times a day, and it takes up to 15 minutes to regain full concentration, this translates into a 15% reduction in productivity over an average 8-hour working day. By reducing noise interruptions, the potential increase in productivity is in excess of RM2.4 Million per year, which is equivalent to the total annual salary of 30 individuals. The return of investment is highly justified for considering acoustics in workplace.

IT IS SIMPLY AN ILLUSION
nternationally acclaimed sculptor and painter Wu Qiong’s art is an open invitation into a state of consciousness replete with luscious dreamscapes, whimsical characters and compositions. His Oil on Canvas masterpieces are subtle in a way that they allow more open-ended interpretations to portray more powerful emotions and feelings. These visceral feelings are communicated through postures, facial expressions and depiction of characters. This allows for more emphasis on individual characters and development of their emotions. Wu’s distinctive cartoon style is obvious, and it resonates with the aesthetic of a generation absorbed with a globally expanded metropolitan lifestyle, which is at the same time reserved, intimate and profound. The characters have their eyes closed and mouths agape. Their upturned faces and shut eyes suggest that havoc is unfolding in their dreams. Wu hopes to tap upon this notion through the recurring use of this facial expression, allowing viewers to draw their own associations with the different scenarios presented in his works. His last series of artworks entitled “Here and Now” represent an entry point into a state of mind or being, with no single definition or explanation as to where ‘here’ is.” I want to engage in a dialogue with viewers, introducing scenarios that would provoke thought or trigger memories and experiences. I want to highlight the wealth of emotions contained within my characters. They are a manifestation of common emotions and considerations of society; hopefully these feelings will resonate with viewers even if the situations and contexts, which I present them in, do not,” says Wu.
