This collection is a declaration of the intentions and messages that 90s street fashion tried to convey, featuring a wild and pure creative spirit. Inspired by the grunge–era tag, ‘I want to make a difference’, it could almost be considered an act of rebellion. The 90s always deliver.

Hair Slayerz Quest finds its winners

ÉLÉVATIONE Opens Flagship London Spa

The winners of the Hair Slayerz Quest competition have been announced with Heather Walstrom and Alejandro Lopez being declared joint overall champions. The winners were chosen through a combination of public votes—highest post reach figures—and by a panel of expert judges from the hair and beauty trade press. Page founder, Paul Mac (@ paulmacspecial), told SalonNV, “I was blown away by the creative talent, the reaction around the world and to see how emotional people were to make the finals, and what it meant to them and their followers. “I only started Hair Slayerz nine months ago, so it’s surreal to see the buzz and sense of community it’s created, and how proud people are to be part of our Black Sheep Revolution.” Out of 650 applications worldwide—whittled down to 12 finalists—the expert judges chose four Hair Slayerz who stood out. On their victory, joint winner Alejandro said, “I’m on cloud nine— hard work pays off when you put the time, effort and dedication into whatever you’re doing. “I’m extremely grateful and humbled by this experience.” Joint winner Heather Walstrom told us, “It feels unreal and I still can’t believe it! “I am so thrilled to be part of this crew and win alongside Alejandro. To have even been considered among so many inspiring artists is such an honour!”

Bcreative lends sweet helping hand to Hair & Beauty Charity Salon owner and hairdresser, Emma Holt from Bcreative Hair in Taunton, Somerset, recently raised £200 for The Hair & Beauty Charity through selling sweets to her customers and allowing them to place their painted handprint on her wall. Emma said, “After attending the charity ball, my colleagues and I thought our industry charity was a worthy cause and we wanted to support and fundraise for them. “I believe when you can give back, you should always do so—you never know when you may need help yourself. “My amazing team and I aren’t just hairdressers to our clients, we provide advice, give confidence, kindness and supply them with tea, coffee and biscuits! “In return, my clients support our salon and the charities we help.” Alongside her fundraiser for the Hair & Beauty Charity, Emma also opens her salon several times a year to the homeless and less fortunate, providing them with sleeping bags, toiletries, food and haircuts. The Hair & Beauty Charity, formerly known as The Hairdressers Charity, is recognised as the official charity of the industry and is dedicated to supporting hair and beauty professionals in need. The organisation offers financial support to individuals and their families facing difficult times due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, bereavement and financial hardship. Co–president of The Hair & Beauty Charity, Samantha Grocutt from Essence PR commented, “Emma’s fundraising efforts have been wonderful, we are so grateful for her enthusiasm and support of the charity. “We hope that others can see Emma’s fundraising efforts and be inspired to do something similar within their salons too.” IMAGES COURTESY OF ESSENCE PR

Hooker & Young founders organise first ‘Hair & Hounds’ charity event A two and four–legged fundraising feat brought together two well– documented loves of Gary Hooker and Michael Young—hairdressing and hounds. The sponsored walk, named Hair & Hounds was organised in a bid to raise money for the two charities, The Hair & Beauty Charity and the Dogs Trust. The pioneering pets and people walk attracted 310 legs—50 dogs and 55 owners—and was held at Exhibition Park, Newcastle raising a phenomenal £1,193. In a bid to raise extra funds, the Hooker and Young team had organised printed t– shirts with the Hair & Beauty Charity colours of purple and sported pictures of either a British Bulldog or Great Dane with quiffs. Gary Hooker said, “The team and our amazing clients really entered into the spirit of the event. We had incredible support from the venue and we also sold t–shirts that we had designed to raise extra funds. Our area manager and mascot for the day even dressed up in a doggy bodysuit! “It was great to do this and we are going to make it an annual event for these two deserving charities that are close to our hearts.” Samantha Grocutt of the Hair & Beauty Charity said, “We are so grateful to the Hooker & Young team for their incredible energy in putting this event together. “It would be brilliant to see this become a national event as we know so many hairdressers are pet lovers too, so maybe this is the start of something big for Hair and Hounds. “We will make every penny count of our share of this generous donation to improving lives of hairdressers and their families.” All well–behaved pets and owners went back to the Wilam Brewery afterwards for a nice iced water, or chilled prosecco, courtesy of Gary and Michael.

Calling educators, HOB Academy needs you!

Team #KPTravels Team Ken Picton has been on the road for much of 2019, bringing their brand of education all over the world. As one of the biggest names in British hairdressing, Ken Picton has spent much of the last 12 months representing the industry on stage both at home and abroad. He’s not been alone either, with his salon team also heading out into the world to showcase their brand of hairdressing education and creativity. The year started for team Ken Picton in Australia, where the Artistic Team shot two collections with acclaimed photographer Andrew O’Toole. Next, it was off to Paris for colour director, Paul Dennison, where he taught the latest colour trends at the 110th L’Oreal World Colour Trophy final. His impressive insight was brought to the global stage, as he shared his predictions with an international audience. Paul’s travels didn’t end there, with a trip to Zurich in May, joined by Ken Picton artistic director, Zoe Williams, the trip saw the talented duo showcasing dynamic cuts and colours for a captive Swiss audience. Zoe and Paul headed to India next, where they taught ‘La French’ balayage techniques in Mumbai and Chennai on behalf of L’Oreal Professionnel. This is the fourth year in a row that the team have been invited to India with L’Oreal. Paul’s balayage brilliance then took him to Dublin, for more colour education, before a final trip a little further afield—to Belgrade in Serbia, for a final freehand colour course. Ken rounded out the year with a trip to Xiamen in China, where he represented the Fellowship for British Hairdressing at the World Hair Congress. Presenting on stage in front of thousands of international hairdressers, Ken promoted both the Fellowship and British hairdressing on a grand scale—and secured a trip to the 2020 Congress for the new F.A.M.E. UK Revlon Academy launches at Westrow in Leeds city centre Westrow, the North of England’s leading hairdressing group, recently held a collaborative launch event with Revlon Professional, to announce a new partnership. The collaboration party, attended by more than 100 staff members from across Westrow’s nine–salon strong portfolio, was used as an opportunity to introduce the Westrow team to key members of the Revlon Professional organisation and to highlight the significance of Westrow’s most recent professional partnership. With Revlon Professional choosing Westrow’s state–of–the–art and multi–award winning Academy in Leeds to be the home of its new UK–based Revlon Academy, the partnership represents an exciting new direction for Westrow, bringing together two equally dynamic and progressive brands. The launch event began with an introduction from Westrow co– director, Steve Rowbottom, who discussed the exciting affiliation and what this means for the Westrow group. This was followed by an introduction to the history of Revlon Professional, given by the global brand’s UK and Ireland general manager, Lisa Jackson. Attendees were then treated to an exclusive up–close–and– personal seminar by John Vial, Revlon Professional’s global influencer who, together with the assistance of the Westrow Artistic Team—including Hollie Watson, Laura Procter, Olivia Garbutt and Daniella Lilliu—recreated a showcase inspired by looks from global Fashion Week. Looks were recreated from Iceberg, Nabil Nayal and Charles Jeffrey’s AW19 shows using Revlon Professional colour, styling and finishing products. For added wow factor, the models sported the outfits that also rocked the Fashion Week runways. Steve Rowbottom, co–director of Westrow said, “The Westrow and Revlon Professional collaboration launch party was the perfect celebration of our recent partnership and a great way to introduce our latest brand affiliation to the team and the industry. “Joining forces with such a respected international hair brand and established manufacturer demonstrates how the Westrow brand continues to go from strength to strength, evolving and growing its industry presence—and that’s something we felt we wanted our 100+ team to celebrate.” IMAGES COURTESY OF SEVEN PUBLICITY & ESSENCE PR

SCOTLAND

Kate Stott wins Scottish Business Woman of the Year Scottish entrepreneur and mother of three, Kate Stott, has been awarded Scottish Business Woman of the Year at the National Business Women Awards. Kate Stott was recognised for her business acumen in launching the new BeautyBooker app, a business building app to encourage customer bookings for hair, beauty and nail salon and spas within the North East area of Scotland. The National Business Awards support and share in the vision to raise the profile of industrious, hardworking and enterprising businesswomen, nationally. The Scottish Business Woman of the Year was open to inspirational businesswomen who have achieved significant accomplishments over the past 12 months Created in 2019, BeautyBooker was developed by Kate Stott, following her time consuming and frustrating search for a last– minute nail appointment. Realising there was no service in the area that could be accessed quickly and efficiently, Kate jumped at the opportunity to develop a regionalised beauty booking app. “Within a market that has become saturated throughout the North East and nationally, we wanted to find a way to promote local businesses that were not necessarily the ones with the highest number of followers on social media,” explains Kate, “Our vision is to create a brand so strong and on–trend that everyone with an interest in hair and beauty has the app on their phone. “We don’t just want to be an app, we envision a whole entire movement—in our eyes owning a copy of Vogue and having access to BeautyBooker will be the same thing.” With a growing social media following and regular trend vlogs featured, BeautyBooker is proactively encouraging people to download and use the app to book their beauty appointments. The app is currently focused in Aberdeen, but Kate has plans for expansion in 2020 throughout Scotland before expanding further into England in the future. Salon owners and freelancers can also download the BeautyMaker vendor app, that allows them to update their availability in real–time and remove appointments listed that may have already been booked by other means. BeautyBooker is currently free for local hair and beauty businesses to join until February 2020. Customers downloading and booking appointments via the app will receive exclusive discounted offers on various treatments booked.

Fellowship Project: Colour and Project: X Teams Host Finale Evening The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Project Colour and Project X teams said goodbye to their year in style with a joint finale evening. As the year draws to a close, the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s education teams is also coming to the end of their time being mentored by some of the best in the business. And, for the recently re–branded Project Colour and Project X Teams, that meant one last stage presentation, with their own finale evening. Hosted at the L’Oréal Academy in Hammersmith, the evening saw both teams and their mentors showcasing all that they had learnt over the last 12 months. For Project: X, the evening was an opportunity to bring together all of their learnings from the year with a showcase of skills, techniques and inspiration. Between them, they presented avant–garde work, wigs, cutting and editorial techniques—all inspired by mentor days from their time on the team. “It was a great night and the guys did a fantastic job,” said team leader, Kai Wan. “It has been another fantastic year for Project: X—the team gelled together so well and it was an absolute joy to lead them through their journey. “I have enjoyed watching them grow in skill and confidence—with learnings they will take with them for life.” For Project: Colour, team leader Paul Dennison provided an inspirational starting point of the Two–Tone movement. “I wanted the team to explore the culture clash which formed the movement,” he said. “We used soft global colours combined with strong, bold panels and patterned pieces to create the looks. “The team also used the Imprinter, which Angelo Seminara generously gave to each member of the team on his mentor day.” The Project: Colour Team’s showcase brought together elements of all the mentoring session they’ve enjoyed over the last twelve months, with their own insightful interpretations of the Two–Tone movement. “The team did me proud,” Paul said. “This year has been great—they were my first team, and were all a leader could have asked for—responsive and open to new ideas. “They worked amazingly well with each mentor and bonded well as a team.” The evening ended with the presentation of certificates to each Project member for their participation over the last 12 months.

ghd Trend Reveal GOTH CHIC

E

very season, ghd Professional launches its Trend Reveal—a distilled edit of looks, designed to inspire and educate salons and clients alike. Rather than producing copies of existing catwalk looks, the Trend Reveal takes ideas and interprets them through the eyes of four client types developed into separate personas, that every salon will recognise. By identifying which of the four characters the client is, stylists will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to interpret new season trend through a real–world lens—and gives clients what they love. The mood of this season of the Trend Reveal is Mystic Queens— inspired by dark, ethereal fantasy and fusing romance and mysticism with a soft, gothic vibe. On the catwalks this look was brought to life through the use of velvets, brocades and embroidery at Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Dries Van Noten, Prada, Erdem and Simone Rocha. On the high street, crystal jewellery prevails, stars, moons and horoscopes appear on embroidery and floor–length dresses in jewel tones with long sleeves and cape detailing are trending this upcoming season. Mysticism is becoming mainstream with crystal healing, meditation and tarot not viewed with quite the same dose of cynicism, as they provide an alternative option for security in increasingly uncertain times. Apps like Co–Star—the NASA–powered daily horoscope— provide cool girls with daily guidance, while best–selling beauty brands like Herbivore, Glossier and Girl. Undiscovered build their products around the power of crystals. Part handbook, part fashion magazine, Sabat claims to combine ‘Witchcraft, feminism and art’, while The Love Witch is one of the year’s most–watched films on Amazon Prime. So, what does this look like given the ghd Professional Trend Reveal treatment? The hair is obviously beautiful, but with an aerated, fairytale feel with delicate and otherworldly texture. This season, the ghd Queen reclaim the night as a realm of self– exploration, awareness and a space to centre with the spiritual self. The Trend Reveals revolves around four interpretations of the Mystic Queen, with four takes on waves and ways to wear up—two of which are perfect for everyday salon styling and two of which feature more detailing—perfect for shoots, special occasions and Instagram–induced envy. Each look is designed to maximise styling opportunities in the salon, showcasing the hairdressers’ knowledge and expertise as well as the technical innovation and capabilities of ghd’s professional styling range.

Queen of Cool This client is happy to stand out from the crowd and try something new. She’s edgy, aware and loves look–at–me style. Combining vintage finds, designer drops and pieces from indie Instagram brands, she’s defiant. This season’s key look is Irregular Texture—a quirky wave that’s flat on top with diverse texture—but still lean and flattering. The alternative look is Spun Hold; a seriously cool updo that allows hairdressers to flex their technical skills with an advanced braiding technique that requires four pairs of hands for a show–stopping collaboration.

MEET THE QUEENS

ghd | Trend Reveal Queens

Queen of Chic Always pristine, this is the client who loves the classics and aspires to Meghan Markle levels of effortless elegance. Her love of polished chic doesn’t mean she’s not open to trends; they just need to be filtered through her desire for a flawless finish. This season it’s all about DNA Dynasty—a chic take on the social media sensation that is the DNA wave. It’s a very formed, sculpted look that’s all about shine and elegance. The updo variant on this trend is Pony Club—a groomed, dressed ponytail at the nape of the neck with volume in the crown and softly curled face–framing tendrils.

Queen Striver She’s the client that’s always in Zara and happily transforms her entire look each season—Queen Striver loves the high street and embraces the challenge of taking on a new aesthetic every few weeks, making her the salon’s dream clients. This season, she’s taking on the Effortlessly Ethereal trend—a loose wave with soft texture that kicks out for a relaxed, youthful feel. Worn up, the Back Knot is a loose take on an updo with a soft knot and a relaxed silhouette—ideal for shorter hair, too.

MEET THE QUEENS

ghd | Trend Reveal Queens

Insta Queen Doing it for the likes, the Instagram girl loves statement looks that stand out as you scroll and make her the star of Stories. Her carefully–curated feed is envy–inducing, and while she knows her staple styles—and her angles—she’s also keen to try anything new that will make an impact on the ‘Gram. This season, it’s all about Crafted Curls. Big, beautiful, pulled–out curls with a flattering swoosh, this style is uber–sexy but still super–cool. The updo alternative is the Cross Braid, featuring different braid techniques combined in an updo. Decidedly non–festive, this look combines dressing with braiding for an evening glam look.

Nail ENVY | Christmas Stars Step–by–step

Nails Step–by–Step BY SALON SYSTEM NAIL EXPERT JAZ MOGER Salon System nail expert Jaz Moger (@paintbyjaz) has created a star inspired step by step using GELLUX.

04

Using your GELLUX Gold Rush (£11.95+VAT) begin to create the tinsel detail. Using a thin nail art brush, paint an uneven ‘bendy’ line across the middle of each nail to create the tinsel effect. Before curing, drop a few gold stars along the line using a your pick up tool.

01

Start by prepping the nails. File to preferred shape, make sure to push back the cuticle and buff the nail plate as well. Cleanse the nails over with the GELLUX Prep + Wipe (£7.10+VAT). Then apply the GELLUX Fast Bond (£5.85+VAT).

02

Next apply one coat of GELLUX Cover Pink Base Coat (£11.95+VAT) and cure the nails.

03

Then apply two coats of the GELLUX Dress to Impress (£11.95+VAT), cure in between each coat.

05

Finally, use the GELLUX Super Shiny Topcoat (£11.95+VAT) to go over all nails. It is recommended to do two coats of topcoat in order, to fully seal the stars to the nails and cure. Finish by wiping over the nails with GELLUX Prep + Wipe (£7.10+VAT) and finally apply GELLUX Nail & Cuticle Oil (£4.35+VAT).

The Colour of his Dreams

F

In conversation with Giuseppe Stelitano

rom winning the L’Oréal ColourTrophy Men’s Image Award, joining the Trevor Sorbie Art Team and being on– stage at Salon International, Italian colourist Giuseppe Stelitano (@iamgiuseppebstelitano) has had an incredible, if not tense year. Since starting his dream career with Trevor Sorbie two years ago, Giuseppe has seen an astronomical rise. Originally taking a baristas position at the Covent Garden salon to get his foot in the door, before becoming a junior and now a member of the Trevor Sorbie Art Team. “Even if you’re a junior they [Trevor Sorbie] want you to give the best you can to your customer. Normally training could take between a year and a half to two years, but because I was 26– years–old I was so focused on what I wanted to achieve and ended up doing my final test eight months after starting at the company.” Giuseppe qualified last November and two months later was given the opportunity to take part in the L’Oréal ColourTrophy, working with colleague and senior director, Kate Wingrove. “I didn’t think about if I was going to get through or not because I felt like I achieved so much, I’m still a junior. When you’re working with such talented people you still have a lot to learn. “It was an amazing journey and a good competition. I felt you could really express yourself and it’s not about photoshop or retouching because, in the end, you have to present the hair live.” The striking colour of choice? Renaissance Yellow. For Giuseppe, the colour inspiration came from his background, region and identity. “We just came back from Italy doing a seminar and there’s so much beautiful art around that you don’t need an exhibition. Even in a small street, there’s colour everywhere. “I didn’t go too punk or too South London. I wanted to achieve a really nice yellow that was wearable and authentic. “The Loreal people were super pleased, saying, ‘You guys pushed the boundary and brought the competition five years forward.’ We tried to achieve a new look—something futuristic but nostalgic at the same time.” Giuseppe tells SalonNV that the final look took queues from renaissance art as much as its inspiration comes from previous decades, mixing era–influences, as well as giving the model an androgynous look. The look’s diverse influence led to Giuseppe taking home the coveted Men’s Image Award.

Giuseppe Stelitano

While he may have started his career with Trevor Sorbie, Giuseppe actually met the hairdressing legend 10 years ago, while working in a London restaurant. “It’s funny because I met Trevor ten years ago, but I didn’t know who he was at the time and I was used to looking after him because they were regular customers. “Trevor was asking me if I had any other ambitions and I told him it was my dream to become a hairdresser. It was so funny because he’s such a humble man—he didn’t tell me he was one of the biggest hairdressers in the world. Super simply, he said, ‘Oh, I can see you becoming a hairdresser. If you’re interested come into my salon in Covent Garden and start as a junior.’ “I went into the salon and unfortunately Trevor wasn’t in—I felt a bit scared and I didn’t take the chance. Everything happens for a reason though and coming back after 10 years was the best decision for me.”

“It was a blessing. He showed me a lot, a new way to see the hairdressing world and a long time ago it was a bit different to what it is now but you get a really good connection with him.” ART TEAM JOURNEY The inspiration behind Giueseppe’s ON/OFF collection image came to him while soaking up the sun with a friend in his native Italy. Across the stone beach he led on, he started noticing the way pebbles would reflect light and started gathering as many as he could. “My eyes were catching all the lights in the pebbles, the sea salt on it created a nice shade. As soon as I saw them it came to me, ‘How can I translate this to hair?’ “I knew everything was being shot in black and white and I felt as a colourist, I wanted to challenge myself and just do colour. I wanted to make something simple but beautiful.” Before stylists become a fully–fledged member of the Art Team, Trevor Sorbie artists are required to go through the Junior Art Team to develop their creative lenses. But in his presentation, Giuseppe wanted to push boundaries, as he sees himself not only as a hairdresser but as a well–rounded artist. On top of his impeccable looks, Giuseppe also created the clothing to build his creative vision. That evening he presented the looks in the basement of the Covent Garden salon, which was given the full London Fashion Week, treatment complete with house lights and a catwalk. “I’ve never seen so many people coming over for a presentation in–salon. I showed them the video and imagery from my collection because I wanted to show how the models looked at the time. Everyone was pleased and Trevor compared me to Alexander McQueen and Angelo Seminara!” From this talent showcased during his presentation, Giuseppe was accepted onto the illustrious Trevor Sorbie Art Team.

Social media for a new decade Emil McMahon talks about social media

W

OW, 2020—it doesn’t seem like 20 years ago since the new millennium was ushered in. So much has changed in the last two decades, especially in how we communicate. Social media has taken over everything. From the way we chat to each other, to the way we market our businesses and it’s all a little too formulaic and stilted. Sending someone a thumbs–up emoji instead of calling to say, ‘well done,’ is now the norm. Showcasing the back of a clients’ head after having a balayage has become the staple post I see on lots of salons social platforms and it’s becoming a little bit boring. We are communicating much more than we ever did, but we actually talk less. We are taking more photographs of hair than ever before, but they’re all much the same. So I’m taking my lead from Gen Z, who live equally in the digital world and the real one. Generation Z has never known a life without devices, it’s the absolute norm to them, but—and it’s a big but—they are striving for more reality in their day to day existence. They want real life as much as they want filtered app images and that, I believe, is the key to your success with social media in the new decade. STOP posting the back of clients new balayage every day, don’t overlay filters on the images to alter the real colour result. Talk about what you have created, don’t just put a few hashtags and emojis in your text. ■ Share real hair everyday hair that everyone can relate to. ■ Share images of your team, after all,

even in a digital age, people buy people. ■ Share the products you have available to purchase. ■ Share the services you provide, from basic root coverage to extensions and everything in–between. ■ Share the environment you work in and its surrounding area ie the street your business is situated on. Creating a social world that is real and engaging for all age groups will make your Facebook and Instagram pages more appealing to a wider range of consumers that will satisfy your existing and potential new clients’ interest in your salon. It’s easy to fall into the trap of repetitive posts just because you feel the need to post something. My advice is don’t repeat, and look at your sites with fresh eyes. Forbes.com suggest your Instagram page should look like a patchwork quilt and each post should have a different feel to it. Does yours? Learn from the Gen Z, they are creating a new ‘vibe’ one that mixes the old with the new in equal parts, digital and real life, you can do the same with your platforms, showcasing what makes your business what it is whilst still embracing the trends for overlays and filters that can enhance, without altering too much the work you create. But please, do one thing, stop posting the back of people’s heads... it just isn’t inspiring • Emil McMahon offers social media training and management. Hair step–by–step

CULt. Step–by–Step BY CREATIVE DIRECTOR JOHN–ROSS SLANE Here we see CULt’s creative director John–Ross Slane create a short, soft disconnected shape executed with various panels of length to create a playfully exaggerated yet modern look. He tells SalonNV, “I loved cutting this shape on Victoria! Her hair was over grown and didn’t highlight her best features. By slimming her hair down on the sides and retaining length on the top, it gave her a fresh dynamic look.”

HAIR BEFORE

01

02

03

04

05

06

07

08

Begin by applying bleach to the roots—2cm in width.

Subsequent sections are cut on the base until the round of the head is reached, at which point over direction is used to maintain length behind the ear.

Next, apply your bleach mix to the whole head, ensuring all sections are covered and the bleach is evenly distributed. Leave to process.

Cross–check this panel by using diagonal sections in the opposite direction to refine lengths and remove any unwanted length.

It’s time to cut! Begin by taking a horseshoe section from the temples to the crown and section. Next, isolate the side area with a vertical section from behind the ear, and separate the back into two from the top of the ear.

This section is connected into the previous section below, continuing to build a graduated shape up the back of the head. Continue through this panel working on the base and cutting on the guideline.

The first section is taken vertically. This section is cut on the inside of the fingers working with a graduated shape, getting shorter as we cut into the nape.

Cross–check this section, making sure to elevate the hair up to the same elevation as it was before.

09

Moving into the sides, take a vertical section and cut a fitted short layered length that goes from short to long to retain some length over the ear. Subsequent sections are over directed onto the previous.

13

We now wrap dry the hair using a small Denman Brush to avoid creating excess volume or unwanted texture.

10

On the second side, lengths are cut shorter than the first side using a more head–hugging layer, which will help create an interesting balance on the final look.

14

We now take horizontal sections throughout the haircut and point to remove weight and soften the shape. Care must be taken to the only point on the mid–lengths and ends.

11

The top panel is then sectioned with a vertical section from the crown to the front of the head. This section is connected into the back panel and a new guideline is cut, that becomes longer towards the front.

15

The sides are now scissor–over–combed to fit the hair around the hairlines and create a stronger shape.

17

Apply a toner to the rest of the hair to get rid of any unwanted brassiness. We used two different toners due to the different tones within the hair. HAIR AFTER

12

To cross–check, we take horizontal sections across the top and dust off any excess length.

16

It’s colour time! Let’s foil. Take a small section towards the front of the head and lightly apply your colour. We’ve opted for a beautiful grey/blue pigment.

Protect your hair during the cold winter months

D

uring the colder months plummeting temperatures combined in dry heat can lead to split ends, breakage and other hair damage. Here, Trichologist Sally–Ann Tarver from the Cotswold Trichology Centre provides her top tips on how to keep your hair looking lustrous and glossy during the cold winter months.

NOURISH AND HYDRATE During the winter our hair and scalp tends to be very dry and dehydrated due to the central heating and dry air and drinking less water. Therefore, it is important to keep your hair hydrated. Invest in a moisturising shampoo and conditioner for optimum hydration. A weekly deep conditioning treatment or intense moisture mask will also help to nourish and replenish. If your scalp feels slightly dry or itchy, give it a treat and apply some coconut or jojoba oil over night. Try to drink more water to keep your scalp and skin hydrated from within. If you find it hard to drink the recommended quantity—two litres per day—try and replace some of your tea or coffee with Roobush or fruit teas.

SALLY–ANNE TARVER Cotswold Trichology Centre but if you want to improve your hair health this winter in the best dietary way, measure your protein intake. The amount of protein depends on your weight and activity, the easiest way to see how much you need is by calculating it using an app like MyFitnessPal. Even if you don’t use it long term you will see how protein should make up a large proportion of your diet. Meat, fish, eggs and dairy are the obvious sources, but you can top up with nuts, seeds and pulses as snacks. If you are a vegetarian it is extremely hard to get what your body needs, but you can always cheat and use a protein shake, which will give you 20–25g of protein. Combine this with ensuring at least half of your food intake is made up of fruit and vegetables. Salad is less appealing in winter months but swapping your carb rich lunch for chunky soups can help hit your five a day.

SUPPLEMENTS LIMIT DRY SHAMPOO Save dry shampoo for those days that you really cannot wash your hair and have no choice but to use it rather than making it part of your hair routine. Whilst dry shampoos have come a long way in recent years they can have a very drying effect on the scalp whilst absorbing oil from the hair. This is particularly so in the winter months when our scalps are more dehydrated.

KEEP OFF THE HEAT When it’s cold outside, we are less inclined to allow our hair to dry naturally but try to minimise heat in the winter to reduce damage. One method is to give your hair a two minute blast, moving the drier around frequently and paying more attention to the roots than the ends. Then go and do something else for five to 10 minutes— apply your makeup, brush your teeth or any other part of your routine. The water trapped in your hair will evaporate faster from being warmed up with the drier but not concentrating the heat in one area will significantly reduce heat damage. Finish blow–drying your hair when it is 80 per cent dry. When you use your hairdryer, keep the heat setting to medium rather than hot, particularly if you use it on high speed. Hairdryers get so extremely hot they can actually cause your hair to disintegrate. Love your hair?... buy the latest Dyson hairdryer, it is impossible to burn your hair with it as its built–in sensors check the temperature 20 times per second— expensive but worth it.

DIET It’s no surprise that an unhealthy diet will lead to unhealthy hair,

Did you know that the rate of hair growth slows down by a third in winter? UV rays increase our natural vitamin D rays in the summer, which makes our hair grow faster. Take a vitamin D supplement throughout the colder months to counteract the effect of a slack of sunshine.

First opened in 1983, Mill Hill is the original salon in the group’s portfolio and is also its busiest. The now 950sqft premises has been given a modern, practical and minimal refurbishment creating more space for the team to work in. HOB Salons director, Paul Simbler explains, “We wanted to create the feeling of more space, but not necessarily more stations. Structurally, we knocked down the interior walls and created a more comfortable environment for clients and our team.” Over £100,000 was spent on the new–look salon, with Pietranera backwash units and Takara Belmont Adria II styling chairs filling out the space. The match the minimalistic aesthetic

of the salon a traditional neutral cream and grey colour scheme decorates the Mill Hill, which lends itself to the calming vibe. Now, the décor, furniture and floor layout come together to create an oasis of relaxation and warmth. The muted flooring and concrete panels also bring character to the salon. “Opening up the salon has made it feel so much bigger without losing its personal touch. Everything is new—from the reception desk to the coffee cups. Changing simple things like the colour scheme has made the salon feel more welcoming and modern and moving zones such as the backwash area has created a more relaxing and private space,” explains Paul. Paul’s Top Tips for refurbishing an existing salon

1

Your new–look salon has to stand the test of time so always invest in key pieces. It might mean a bigger outlay initially but will be worth the money in the long run.

2

Look at the floorplan as a simple rectangle and see where you can move or knock down walls to create more space.

3 4

Choose a warm, modern and timeless colour for the décor.

Sit in styling chairs and backwash units until you find one that suits you. Put yourself in your client’s shoes.

Grant Carr

In The

Chair

After working in the hair industry for over a decade, Glasgow’s Grant Carr (@ grant_carr_creative) opened his salon, Nineteen (@nineteenglasgow1) three months ago. Grant is a previous SHABA winner and has an incredible reputation as a colourist. We spoke to Grant about self–employment, opening his salon and what he has planned going into 2020. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE INDUSTRY? I’ve been in the industry for 14 years, and I started in a salon where I was brought up in Kirkintilloch—I moved to Glasgow after that.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE TRENDS IN 2019? I quite like the fact that the mullets are having a comeback. Also, the two–tone, 90s colour vibes—which is proper cool. People are starting to do their hair a lot looser and with shag textures and I like that.

WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR’S TRENDS? I think the two–tone trend will continue for a while and I think bold, block–colour will be big.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG HAIR PROFESSIONALS LOOKING TO TURN FREELANCE? If you want to go freelance, source out salons

that encourage self–employment and ones that identify with your personal style. In saying that, it’s always good to learn off other people as well. With freelancing, it gives you the opportunity to be individual—hairdressing’s all about being individual. When you’re a freelance stylist, you can take control of your career and be who you want to be, still in a decent working environment. If you feel that’s what you want, then freelancing is the way forward.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT THIS YEAR? I’m quite happy about the homeless event we did. We did about 27 haircuts and there were people coming in who weren’t getting their haircut because there was clothes and food. And opening Nineteen, obviously that was the highlight.

HOW LONG WAS NINETEEN PLANNED FOR? I’ve been planning it for the past six months to a year. I’ve always wanted a salon like this and I’ve chosen to do this and it’s worked out pretty well.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR? I think me and one of our stylists Emma (Diamond, @emmadiamondhair) are going to do the BHAs next year. We’re going to put something together. We’ve got a shoot organised in January for me, a couple of the boys and Emma and we’re going to do a Nineteen look book. That’ll be for clients to look through, so you can see everyone’s work physically in the shop.
