President John Clark and the Board of Directors would like to welcome returning players, members, and spectators to the 2010–2011 polo season at the Eldorado Polo Club. This season promises to be one of our best, with a program filled with the heart-pounding polo and social events that make Eldorado the longest-standing, most prestigious polo club in the desert. We would like to open by introducing George Dill as our new Polo Manager. George comes to us with years of experience playing polo, which, paired with his work with the Federation of International Polo and his executive work at the USPA, make him the perfect match for his latest role at the EPC. George is excited to work with Jan Hart and the polo club team to improve the quality of the club experience for members while creating a culture of sportsmanship and passion for the game we all love. The club is thrilled to reopen a brand new Cantina. The grand reopening of this desert institution took place on December 4; we invite members, spectators, and the general public to come out and enjoy the horseshoe bar, dance floor, fieldside patio, great food, and drinks throughout the year. Our Polo Academy is also up and running for the 2010–2011 polo season. Kyle Fargey is heading up the Academy, and will offer individual and group lessons for players of all levels of experience. There will be coaching for tournaments and league play, video analysis, as well as practice chukkers and a coaching league for new players. Kyle is a 3-goal player with ten years of teaching experience, and we are proud to

bring his expertise to the growing desert community of polo players. On the fields, we have an exciting season of play lined up. This season, Eldorado will host monthly 8-Goal, 4-Goal, and 0-Goal league play, as well as tournaments and games, including: the World Gym Tournament, GPL Wellington Cup, Trione Seniors Tournament, Women’s WCT Tournament, Joe Barry Tournament, Madelyn Jason Memorial Junior Officers Cup, Tony Veen Tournament, and USPA Pacific Circuit Governor’s Cup. After polo, we have a vibrant social calendar planned. Join us on Thursdays for our after-polo BBQ in the Cantina, and Sundays for brunch at the Club House. We will once again host the elegant Governor’s Bash and support the Polo Training Foundation Benefit, held annually at the Eldorado Country Club. jan hart Welcome to the 2010–2011 season at the Eldorado Polo Club! As one of the oldest polo clubs in the Unites States, Eldorado has been at the forefront of the game for over 50 years, playing host to three U.S. Open Championships, and some of the best professional and amateur players in the world. Eldorado has been mixing the glamour of Hollywood with a cowboy flare for years, creating a club for those with champagne or beer tastes. All that is required is a passion for a fast game of polo—desert style!
heavy with the scent of orange blossoms. Los Angeles is a scant two hours away, Palm Springs less than a half hour, but there is a magical feeling of isolation, of being one long penalty shot from the edge of the world. In 2011, the goal of the Eldorado team is to revive the club’s status as a world-class, international club. After years of experience hosting such diverse events as the U.S. Open Polo Championships, the annual Skins polo game, and the annual Governor’s Cup, the team has the knowledge and history to bring back the top-notch quality and organization needed to host a tournament of that caliber.
It was in the mid-1970s that Eldorado was molded into what you see today. At that time, the club had been operating for years with two regulation-size fields. The polo boom in the mid-1970s created a need for expansion that Carlton Beal and Willis Allen were happy to accommodate. Their partnership resulted in what is the present-day Eldorado Club, with 10 regulation-sized fields, stabling for over 400 horses, and almost endless exercise and practice areas.
From the beginning, Eldorado was conceived as a player’s club. The late Carlton Beal, one of the club’s most influential founders, was particularly adamant about that. He and the others would have had it no other way. In honor of Carlton Beal’s vision for Eldorado, we’re dedicated to bringing the club back to its former glory and stature.
Eldorado’s location is among the most beautiful in the world. Nestled against the mountains at the east end of the Coachella Valley, the club seems a tropical paradise. The days are balmy most of the season, and the warm desert nights are

PEE WEE POLO! THE TRADITION CONTINUES!
Artie Cameron Jr. started playing polo in Santa Barbara ra at the young age of 5. Under the guidance and instruction of his father, Artie Cameron Sr., a promising group of West Coast kids learned polo basics when they were just old enough to hold a mallet. Throughout his years of dedication to Pee Wee Polo, Artie Sr. inspired passion and dedication to the sport in many children. He understood the importance of providing children and teens the opportunity to play polo at a beginner level, learning the rules from the ground up. Since Artie Sr.’s unfortunate passing in 2001, Artie Jr. has carried on the legacy of Pee Wee Polo at the Eldorado Polo Club. Through Artie Jr., the children gain the same fun and positive perspective on the sport that Artie Sr. was so passionate about. Artie Jr. is joined by a dedicated group of polo instructors and parents, without whom, Pee Wee Polo would be impossible. A special thanks to Artie Cameron Sr. and Jr. for their legacy of Pee Wee and Junior Polo, a legacy that remains a strong tradition at the Eldorado Polo Club. Professional Instruction by Kyle Fargey November through March Eldorado Polo Club is pleased to welcome Kyle Fargey as the new manager of the Eldorado Polo Academy! Kyle is a 3-goal professional player and an active member of the Canadian National Team; he has played in tournaments around the globe, from Kenya and Ghana to Mexico and China. Kyle has been instructing amateur players for over ten years, and has been running the Calgary Polo Club School since 2005. Kyle has experience teaching all ages, with varying degrees of riding experience. He enjoys introducing beginners to the game and seeing them progress, as well as providing instruction to those who are seeking to improve their current level of play. Kyle encourages those that have never played to join him at the Eldorado Polo Club and discover the exhilaration of the game. His instruction comes with only one warning: “Polo has been found to be very addictive. You can be hooked for life, after only one game!”

Dear Polo Enthusiasts, The United States Polo Association is happy to honor its partnership with the Eldorado Polo Club for the past 54 years. Eldorado has established itself as the premier winter polo destination for the West Coast by hosting three U.S. Opens, the annual Governor’s Cup, the annual Skins Game and the Women’s Western Challenge Match. The Club has developed a reputation as a “player’s” club because it hosts polo experiences for all levels of polo players from the beginner to the high goal professional. The Club certainly exemplified this reputation by choosing George Dill, the USPA Pacific Northwest Governor, as its new polo manager. George and his staff of Rob Roenisch and Debbie Morrison should help to make this season a great experience for players and spectators alike. I’m looking forward to seeing my friends at the new Cantina. The fields should be better than ever because the new Fields Manager, George Contreras, will have more water for the fields due to the expansion of Eldorado Lake. Another new development for Eldorado is the new Polo Academy which will be directed by Kyle Fargey. His experience in managing a similar polo school in Calgary for many years should be the right combination for beginners and experienced players who want to improve their game. The United States Polo Association will have a greater presence in the desert this year. It is anticipated that Kris Bowman and Ed Armstrong from the USPA will be in the desert for a total of three weeks. Eldorado Polo Club, in partnership with the United States Polo Association, will again provide Steve Lane who will be conducting weekly umpire and rules meetings to improve the safety and enjoyment of polo at Eldorado. Eldorado should be congratulated for all the improvements it has made for the 2010–2011 season. We look forward to a fun and eventful season.

of History Polo has its noble beginnings as one of the first organized team sports dating back to the 5th century BCE, where it was practiced in Persia as a training game for cavalry units. Polo moved across Asia and India with military conquests. The roots of the modern version of the game are in India, with the establishment of the first polo club, the Calcutta Polo Club, in 1834 by two British soldiers, Captain Robert Stewart and Major General Joe Shearer. Polo found a home in Britain via India in the 1860s, and the Brits are credited with bringing the sport to the Western world.
Hook: a defensive tactic in which a player hooks the mallet of an opposing player or blocks his or her swing The Athletes The quality of a polo match is determined by the skill and athleticism of both horse and rider. Players usually require a string of at least 4 ponies for low- and medium-goal matches; and some players bring up to 10 ponies to high-goal matches. Polo ponies are generally thoroughbreds that stand, on average, 14.2 to 16 hands high at the withers. An ideal polo pony has a steady temperament, is responsive during intense play, and possesses stamina, speed, agility, and maneuverability. Players come to polo from many paths, whether they have been born and raised in the sport, or have spent time in other riding disciplines only to be drawn to the addictive rush of the polo field. Players in North America are assigned ratings (also called handicaps) by the USPA, based on their experience and skill on the field. Beginners are assigned a C (or -2) or B (-1) rating. From there, as skills improve, the players are rated from A (or zero) to the top rating, a 10-goal player.

Throw in: play begins or is resumed when the umpire throws the ball into play Player ratings also determine the make-up of their teams. Opposing teams are equally matched by adding up the rating numbers of each of their players. For example, a team competing in a 4-goal tournament must have a total handicap of 4 when all players’ ratings are added up (for example, they could field two 0-goal players, a 3-goal player and a 1-goal player, to add up to a 4-goal team handicap).
The Game Polo is played on a massive field the size of nine football fields (300 x 160 yards), to accommodate the intense speed and pace of the game. Horse and player traffic can extend just outside of the low wooden border, but as soon as the ball leaves the field, it is out-of-bounds and stops play. Goal posts stand 8 yards apart at either end of the field, and play begins at center field with a throw-in, where teams face each other in designated positions until the umpire throws the ball into play.

The Number One player assumes the primary offensive position on the field, and is tasked primarily with scoring, as well as neutralizing the opposing team’s Number 4 player (their primary defense). The Number Two is the mover and the shaker, a transition player who backs up the Number One player, and aggressively seeks to move the ball upfield. Number Three focuses on the long game, keeping his or her eye on the big picture strategy and hitting the long shots up the field. This player is often the highest rated player on the team. Finally, player Number Four is primarily responsible for guarding the goal, and preventing the opposing team from scoring.

Because the primary focus in polo is the safety of the horses and of the players, the rules of play focus on avoiding injury. With horses hitting speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, the most significant rule governing play is “right of way,” as designated by what is referred to as the “line” of the ball. Players can hit the ball from either side of their mounts (though they can only use their right hand to hold the mallet), and once the ball is in play, the “line of the ball” is established. The player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty. The severity of the penalty depends on how dangerous the infraction was to the horse or player.

Polo has been heralded as the Sport of Kings, but anyone can enjoy the exhilaration of watching polo. Whether you watch from the sidelines, or from exclusive seating in the Club House, you will be caught up in the addictive pace of the game. Spectators can participate in the half-time Divot Stomp, and enjoy the social aspect of tailgate gatherings. However you approach it, being a part of the polo lifestyle is a thrilling and social experience for all.
In a low- or medium-goal game, players have four 7-1/2 minute chukkers in which to score, and in a high-goal game, there are six 7-1/2 minute chukkers. A goal is scored by hitting the ball between the two goal posts at any height. A goal is confirmed by the flag bearer standing (at a safe distance) behind each goal. It pays to keep your eye on the ball, but also on your team, because they change directions each time a goal is scored, in order to equalize playing conditions.
Ride off or Bump: a defensive move in which a horse’s shoulder is pressed into the shoulder of another player’s horse, in an attempt to drive him or her off the line of the ball. Legal bumping of an opponent’s horse takes place at no more than a 45-degree angle

As moving as the sport of polo is to participate in on the field, or watch from the sidelines, it is equally as inspirational for a select group of visual artists. Here we profile three uniquely talented creators, who capture a passion for the game, the horses, and the polo lifestyle in fine art. The means and mediums of their artistic contributions vary in distinct ways; but their shared respect for the sport of polo combines to serve as an inspiration to the dedicated polo enthusiast crowd of Eldorado.

collections. His larger-than-life bronzes include ICU Bronc Twister at the Calgary Stampede, and She Gave Her Best and Next Play in Indio. Rich’s bronze work displays intricate detail and a deep knowledge of anatomy. When building a model, whether it is horse or rider, Rich will often start from the inside out, initially crafting the muscles and bones and building the model outward. His newest project, a collaboration with cousin Bob Spaith, has been keeping Rich busy since 2008: an elaborate bronze commissioned by the Calgary Stampede entitled By the Banks of the Bow that will depict two cowboys herding 15 life-size horses across the Bow River. Rich is creating the cowboys and horses in the front in the style of traditional riders, while the cowboy and horses that follow, created by Bob Spaith, are the rodeo horses that have come to represent the modern-day rodeo cowboy.
Growing up on a farm in central Illinois, Carolyne Hawley developed a love for horses in her early life. When she moved to the desert in 1961, much of her art centered on Native American subjects. Carolyne’s portfolio is a study in variety, however, and is the mark of an artist who is constantly growing in her interests and subjects, with work as diverse as landscape and floral gardens to figurative and portraiture.
Rich’s connection to the ranch life is deeply engrained, as is his connection to polo. He is a third-generation polo player who reached his career high at a 3-goal rating. Since retiring from the sport, he and his wife Jan continue to contribute, supporting their local polo club through artistic donations.
Glamour and glory
Carolyne’s affinity for Western themes has grown in recent years, incorporating equine subjects with figurative and landscape themes. Over the last 30 years, Carolyne has painted all breeds of horses, including national Arabian champions, Tennessee Walkers and thoroughbreds. Her Western themes do not end with horses; she also strives to capture the culture of the diverse people and animals that punctuate ranch life. Carolyne works mainly in oil, feeling that this medium is virtually limitless when it comes to color and detail in her portrait and landscape work, and creating striking emotion in her large-scale canvas work. Working with oil has also allowed her to embody the liveliness of her equine subjects. With her current interest in representing horses in action, capturing polo on canvas seemed a fitting subject, with its beautiful athletes (human and equine) and the fast pace of the game. Carolyne Hawley’s work is featured in the collections of Palm Springs City Hall, the family collection of Boeing Aviation, and the private collection of singer Faith Hill. She is a featured artist at Danskin Gallery on El Paseo in Palm Desert.
Polo in Bronze
Heiner Meyer is a German artist known for his oil-on-canvas collages that simultaneously elevate and question our consumption of popular media and consumerist glamour. The saturated colors of his work promote an almost overwhelming sense of excess, with images of Old Hollywood actresses conflated with classical Greek sculpture and popular product packaging. Polo players have been bit players in his oil montages of glamour for many years, but three years ago, Heiner’s eye focused on the Sport of Kings in a new series of multi-media works that capture the drama of the game. While not a polo player himself, Heiner is an avid spectator who was drawn by the elegant beauty of the game. He was attracted to European polo by the manner in which the close communities are cultivated, with family teams often supplemented by professionals from abroad, especially from Argentina. Throughout the polo season, Heiner will bring his camera and photograph the play, using the images he captures as a basis for his final works. Once he has chosen a photo, Heiner incorporates oil on large canvases.
Rich Roenisch’s bronze sculptures are prolific on polo podiums around North America, awarded at clubs in Florida, Alberta, Hawaii, and California, including the Eldorado Polo Club. Replicas of Rich’s work are presented to all new inductees to the United States Polo Hall of Fame. Rich’s bronze polo sculptures range from those given as polo trophies to larger-than-life sculptures that grace private and public
Of his choice to use both photography and oil paint, Heiner states, “The painting gives me the possibility to emphasize the dynamic scenes in the game. I am fascinated by the elegance, the dramatic art, and the speed of the sport.” For Heiner, the use of photography and oil represent a play between the concrete and the abstract on the canvas that captures the spirit of both the game writ large and the players that take to the field. What are your favorite qualities in a polo pony?
While speed and being handy are very important in a polo horse, I really love a horse that works hard in the ride-offs and stays relatively calm in pressure situations.
My favorite qualities in a polo pony are drive, determination, and passion for the game.
What skill on the field would you most like to be gifted with?
Riding skills are probably the most important BUT there is no better feeling than being able to hit the ball hard and far.
I want to have better ball control to be able to keep the ball away from my opponents and have more accurate shots.
What do you appreciate in teammates?
Hayward Pardue. He was a good teammate and the Pros that I have had the privilege to play with, all hard workers!
To me, teammates are like family; we fight, argue, have fun, laugh, win, and lose, and at the end of the day, we are stronger together.
Opponents who are competitive, go hard, respect the rules and horses, and don’t say much on the field.
First and foremost, I value good sportsmanship.
Newport, Rhode Island was an unbelievable experience. Calgary has great fields but it’s a long drive for me—and of course Eldorado, where I rode my first polo pony.
Anywhere with good fields, fun people, and great polo.
Who is your hero in real life?
No real hero but lots of people I admire.
My mom, Claudia, is my hero. She has the most amazing work ethic, is always willing to help those in need, a good teacher, and an amazing equestrian.
What about polo do you dislike?
It’s a great game—what is there to dislike? Although, too much talk on the field takes away from the game.
Unnecessary fighting on the field—it only makes a dangerous sport more so.

I would love to have the ability, patience, and know-how to train natural horsemanship.
Governors Cup Champion 2010 (not a personal achievement but definitely a polo highlight), Most Improved Player in Calgary and Eldorado in different years.

It has to be fast, smooth, stop good, and is good in the line up.
I like small horses with a wide compact body that are super handy. I like some power depending on the level of polo.
A big heart and a personality. They may not be the best athlete but they have to try!
Good at taking a man. If you can take a man in a polo game, it does a lot for your team.
Skills come from your own nature. Playing high goal, you can be a little bit faster; by practicing stick and ball and shooting penalties, you can be more accurate, but you have to be born with some natural ability.

When they play as a team, and they give everything to win.
