FIFI When watching Jennifer Alexy astride her pony Fifi, one phrase springs to mind: small, but mighty. Standing at only 14.2 hands, the bay mare has achieved amazing feats. While she’s not a naturally fast mare, she’s got an incredible handle and tons of heart with a never-ending drive to win. With an attitude much larger than she is, Jennifer says that Fifi is best described as the sassiest in the barn. “She has serious attitude. She’s not aggressive, but she keeps all the others in line.” Alexy’s pro, Diego Larregli, trained Fifi in Argentina, then brought her to California and convinced Jennifer that, despite Fifi’s size, she’d fit right into her string. Having amassed a collection of 10 Best Playing Pony awards ranging from Eldorado 4-goal tournaments to the USPA Women’s Arena Open since arriving in the United States in 2019, she truly is the little mare that could. For Jennifer, Fifi’s size makes polo easy. “With a short mallet in my hand, I am much better with the ball—but I don’t have to give anything up with regard to the physical aspect of the game because she has so much heart. She fights for everything, and that’s why I love her.”

RAYITO
DIVA
Argentine-bred chestnut mare Rayito plays with a competitive spirit like no other, making the 12-year-old one of polo pro Maco Llambias’s favorites. The 15.1-hand pony has lots of heart and personality to spare when it comes to on-field action. While she may not be the fastest pony on the field, her competitive drive takes over when she goes up against other ponies. “She likes to win,” Maco adds. This well-travelled pony arrived in the United States from Argentina in 2017 and has played in Chicago, Santa Barbara, and at Eldorado. Upon her arrival, Rayito quickly became a family favorite: Maco’s daughter rides and schools the mare, and his wife, Megan, plays her occasionally. Her skill was evident in the 2023 season, taking home the Best Playing Pony award in the 12-goal Spreckels Cup Finals under Maco. As she gets older, Maco admits that he spoils her more than he used to. She is still the competitive mare she always was, with the same incredible power and handle, but these days, she receives a little extra care and attention. Rayito has caught on to her status as the Llambias’s favorite: while she may not have gotten many treats in her early days in Argentina, she has certainly learned to love them now.
For Pipe Marquez, Diva is the pony that launched it all. The 11-yearold grey mare inspired his breeding organization, which currently produces upwards of 20 embryos per year. Pipe remarks, “She was so good, it made me embark on this new breeding project.” She’s one of his top mares, and he has a very special bond with her. Arriving from Colombia in 2019, Diva’s first stop was Wellington, Florida, where she spent two seasons playing the high-goal Gauntlet of Polo Series. From there, she played two years of high-goal polo in California, winning numerous Best Playing Pony awards. Most recently, Diva won Best Playing Pony awards in the 12-goal George Conkwright Memorial and Beal Cup Finals at Eldorado during the 2023 season. Because of her size, she’s naturally very handy. However, Pipe adds she really can do it all. “Everything is easy for her, from running to stopping and out-turning the competition, she’s always relaxed and smooth for her rider.” Pipe remarks that her best quality is her intelligence and ability to anticipate her rider’s desires. “When you think about turning, she’s already turning. When you think about stopping, she’s already stopped.” Diva loves her job and is always in a good mood. In the barn, she’s a sweet, easy-going mare—though, she doesn’t hesitate to remind newcomers to the herd who is in charge.

PLAYER PROFILE: MICAELA SARACCO BY EMILY HURST
S
eventeen-year-old California native Micaela Saracco has set her sights on becoming a professional polo player. As the daughter of professional player Luis Saracco, Mica has been immersed in polo her whole life. She started playing at the Eldorado Polo Club at age 7—and with her win as part of the 2023 National Youth Tournament Series (NTYS) Championship team, she has established herself as an up-and-coming player to watch. Emily Hurst explores Saracco’s polo journey and her plans for future polo championship performances. How did you get started playing polo? You could say I was born into it. My Dad started playing polo when he was young, and he’s a professional player. He’s taught me everything I know. Have any polo lessons stood out to you over the years? Every lesson has been meaningful—whether big or small, they have impacted who I am now as a player. It’s hard to choose just one. What’s one thing you love about polo? I want to say everything: the lifestyle, going to the barn every single day and working hard, stick and balling—and that feeling when you play and all the anxiety from before the game just disappears. The rush of adrenaline when you play is second to none. What’s your favorite place to play and why? Eldorado, because I grew up there. It’s home to me. Do you have any favorite memories at Eldorado? This past season, I played the 6-goal league with some of my best friends—and while we didn’t get to finish the tournament, it was a really fun experience to play with a team made up of all young players. What is your favorite polo destination? Santa Barbara is pretty high on my list. The weather is incredible, and the beach is just across the street. There’s nowhere else like it. Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions? Warming up before the game has become a kind of ritual for me. What is it like to play with your father? It’s actually one of my favorite memories and something I always laugh about. When I play with my Dad, we always have these huge arguments, which I’m sure is really funny to see. We have what you would call a love-hate relationship when we’re playing, but I’ve been playing with him since I started.
18
ELDORADOPOLOCLUB.COM
And even though we scream at each other and go a little crazy, I wouldn’t play with anyone else. I mean, all these years later, we’re still playing together, so something works well! Do you have a favorite pony? Yes, her name is Polola. We just brought her back to Argentina to breed. We’ve already got 12 of her offspring playing. I’m playing three of her offspring right now in Argentina, and there’s more to come. What are some notable achievements in your polo career to date? The NYTS Championship Cecil Smith Cup in September for sure. And I’ve won some Eldorado 6- and 8-goal tournaments that were big wins for me. What are your polo goals and aspirations? I would like to go pro. I think I have a chance if I work hard and keep improving. In the short term, my goals include playing in the U.S. Women’s Open Championship® and the Argentine Women’s Open. Do you prefer women’s polo or mixed polo? In Argentina, I play mostly women’s polo, and in the U.S., I try to play a handful of women’s tournaments, but it’s a lot more mixed here. As a female interested in potentially going pro, there are a lot of opportunities to play because of the amount of women getting into the sport. I really think women’s polo will be the next big thing in a few years. That said, being a female pro in mixed polo means that I have to work 10 times harder and always be at the top of my game, so it’s definitely not easy. What do women players bring to the game? Women bring a lot of energy to the field, and there are just so many women playing. We’re absolutely getting more aggressive, and we’re learning from the best. Women, as a whole, are playing better and breaking barriers every day.

GETTING INTO THE GAME WITH KYLE FARGEY
K
yle Fargey has been the resident Polo Pro and Head Instructor of the Eldorado Polo & Riding Academy for over a decade. He makes polo fun and accessible to all players. Kyle’s goal is taking each of his amateur players to the next level and graduating students into playing members. No matter your level or ability, Kyle welcomes you to the Polo & Riding Academy. Here, he answers a few of the most frequently asked questions he receives about learning to play the Sport of Kings. What riding/polo experience do I need to take a lesson? No riding or polo experience is required to take a lesson. We have a range of school horses and several instructors, so we can cater lessons to players of all levels and abilities. As a beginner, what will I learn? We teach beginners the basics of horsemanship and riding at the same time that we teach polo skills. So you are learning to steer and control the speed of the horse while also learning to swing the mallet and hit the ball! There’s a lot to learn, but by the end of the first lesson, most students are carrying the ball up and down the field. Can I take a group lesson with my friends or co-workers? Our students have a range of goals—some are serious about pursuing the sport, some are casual players looking for a new hobby, and some just want to scratch a polo game off their bucket list. In addition to private and semi-private lessons, we host kids’ birthday lesson groups, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and corporate team-building events—everyone and anyone is welcome to book a group or private lesson. Do I need to buy any equipment to take a lesson? For your first lesson, we provide all the equipment you need—from a helmet and mallet to a fully tacked polo pony. Once you commit to a lesson package (no one does just ONE lesson because it is so fun!), we help you source the equipment you need to get started. For your first season, a safety-approved helmet, polo gloves, and a pair of good boots are all you really need to get going. How many lessons do I need to take before I can play on a team/play a game? Once you learn the basics of the game and have a good foundation in hitting and riding, you can join the Coaching League, which is a slow game with instructors on the field to assist. In Coaching League, you
20
ELDORADOPOLOCLUB.COM
will improve your skills in a game environment that is safe and controlled so you can learn at your own pace. After a season or two in Coaching League, students often invest in their own ponies and start Club Chukkers or League play. What is the ideal age to start learning polo? Our youngest student is 7 years old, and our oldest student is 70! The ideal time to start learning polo is TODAY because it’s an experience you will never forget.
WINNING WITH HORSES
A
dam Snow is a professional polo player and one of a select group of American professionals to have achieved a coveted 10-goal handicap. Shelley Onderdonk, DVM, an acclaimed veterinarian for equine athletes, is his partner in life and writing. In May 2023, the pair released their new book, Winning With Horses, detailing the successes and challenges they faced competing on and caring for horses throughout their respective careers working at the top levels of equestrian sport. The book lays out a philosophy that makes the horse’s well-being the top requirement for winning in competitive equestrian sports. It covers the role of human–equine communication, cultivating a competitor’s mindset, best practices for preparing both humans and horses for competition, and the answers to tough questions about caring for elite equine athletes. Snow and Onderdonk share the philosophies and approaches that they have used when caring for his string of polo ponies at the height of their playing careers—and the more than 40 Best Playing Pony awards to their names are proof that these two have the experience and results to back up their approach to competition and care.
CAMPARI
This book’s practical methods for top-notch training and care for high-level equine athletes make it a must-read for horse enthusiasts and competitive athletes. Combining experience, facts, and anecdotes from their respective careers, Snow and Onderdonk make a strong case that the surefire way to field a winning string is to prioritize the health and well-being of your ponies.

Champions of Polo Danny Walker competes on Field One at his home club, Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (Image courtesy of David Lominska)
There are polo champions, and there are champions of polo: people who support clubs not just with their patronage but through their leadership, vision, time, and dedication. You hear their names in clubs across the country, and they are known by players at every level of the sport, from junior polo at local clubs, to the country’s most competitive high-goal leagues. Eldorado is lucky to have two such champions in our midst: Daniel Walker and Tim Kelly.

A Life in Polo: Circuit Governor Danny Walker Danny Walker has served the Pacific Coast Circuit as Governor for eight years, but his service to the sport of polo in the United States has been a life-long endeavor. Danny has served many roles with the United States Polo Association (USPA), including as National Handicap Committee chairman, Governor-at-Large, Secretary, and as an Executive Committee officer. He is known as a leader, advocate, and mentor, both on and off the field, and his dedication to the sport has inspired players across California.

On Polo How long has polo been in your family? I am a third-generation polo player. It started in 1954 with my grandfather at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, then my father, then myself. What is your most memorable polo experience? The most memorable international tournament I have played in was in New Delhi, India. It was a 14-goal game, but we entered the tournament as 12 goals. My brother and my father were on the team, and Peter Baldwin played number four. We were very successful. Each of the games was four chukkers
in length, and, in most cases, we defended our side of the field such that nobody would score a goal off the polo field—only by a penalty shot. And on the other side, we were scoring goals to win the game. Consequently, in this 14-goal tournament—and it lasted for one month—we never lost a polo game, and we ended up winning the tournament. Is there a polo pony that stands out in your career? When you raise and train so many horses, it takes a lot of time to learn the handle or the mount of each individual horse and what works for the rider. So when I am asked that question, I like to say that whatever horse I’m riding is my favorite polo pony. But of course, I have a few memories of some great horses. One of my young horses, named Teddy, was a very talented filly, as is, more recently, Josefina. If I picked a gelding, I would say that Black Knight was a favorite of mine, and Santiago is a recent favorite. All of those horses were very unique, loved to play the sport, and had great talent. I like to say that their talent was greater than the rider—which was me.
On Being Circuit Governor
The USPA’s Executive Committee really led the way for umpiring and realized that the greatest benefit that they could give the membership was good umpires. And then I give credit to the individuals who pushed the umpiring program. As Executive Director of Umpires LLC, Charlie Muldoon pushed umpiring for the length of his position. In his footsteps, the current Executive Director, Fergus Gould, is doing great work to improve umpiring and raise the training of individual umpires as well. What are your hopes for the Pacific Coast Circuit’s future, and what will your role be? I think that there are various polo clubs that need an individual that’s willing to commit dollars to the growth of the facilities and polo fields of that particular club. It just needs to be done all the way across the board. Santa Barbara and Eldorado have the largest accumulation of players coming on an annual basis, and that can help them grow—then we have a chance to push polo into a higher level of achievement. Once I leave my position, I won’t lose the ability to help or guide individuals and clubs on growth and development. I remain committed to the sport and to our great circuit in perpetuity.
What main goals did you set for yourself as Circuit Governor? I wanted to increase the amount of communication from the USPA to the clubs, straight down to the individuals in the clubs, and as much of the membership as I could possibly affect. What have you enjoyed most in your role as Governor? I enjoy being able to help clubs with their challenges. Each club has a different agenda, and you need to figure out how to accommodate and how to work with all those folks. Some clubs have facility challenges and some have financial or personnel challenges and need to be connected with other individuals to secure those positions or funding. In many cases, I get involved because the club owners don’t know who to speak to or don’t know the path to travel to achieve their goals or stage their events. I feel that we have been very beneficial to the clubs in getting the money, awards, and tournaments they need so that we can increase the amount of polo that is being played. What developments have you seen during your tenure? The number one positive change for all of polo is the quality of the umpires. If you think about any polo game, if the umpiring is not fair and consistent, then the game is not enjoyed by the players, nor is it enjoyed by the spectators. Today’s umpires are much more knowledgeable, more patient with the players, and carry better knowledge of the rules and how to apply them than ever before. Danny and Linda Walker ELDORADO POLO

The Polo Life: The Philosophy of Tim Kelly Tim Kelly has a one-of-a-kind enthusiasm for polo, which he shares with his many teammates, friends, mentees, and mentors across the country. He is a patron of three teams—Lockton, Melody Ranch, and Pecan Acres—which he plays out of Eldorado Polo Club in the winter; Houston, TX, in spring and fall; and Jackson Hole, WY, in the summer. Tim started playing polo in his 30s. Having exhausted his passions for car racing and bike racing, a friend suggested he take his adrenaline journey to the polo field. Three decades later, polo is more than a hobby for Tim—it’s his life.

Tim Kelly with his Lockton polo team family
Having traveled and played at so many clubs, what makes the Eldorado Polo Club unique? It’s a come-along, get-along culture here. The desert vibe is really laid back, but the polo is very competitive. There is a broad spectrum of ages and a broad spectrum of polo. The weather is fantastic, and it’s just an outstanding time of the year here. There’s just so much polo offered on so many different levels, and it is accessible. What was the highlight of your 2023 season at Eldorado? We try to blend our teams so that we have younger players and some more experienced players, so the highlight, to me, is watching both generations play together. We change it up every now and then—we really talk about the chemistry and what we’re looking to do. The goal is not necessarily just to win but how we present on the field, especially when we’re playing as Lockton. We want to be professional; we want to be the quiet team. We want to play aggressively but with a tremendous amount of sportspersonship and thoughtfulness for the horses and the other teams. What’s your role on the field with the Lockton team? I’m going to explain my philosophy with an example. Somebody at the USPA meetings in California said, “So-and-so doesn’t get in the way. They stand in the middle of the field, and every now and then, they make a play if they want to.” And I’m sitting there listening to this, and I said, “And what do you find wrong with that?” They all started laughing. I said, “I’ve done my time charging in and making plays I probably shouldn’t have to or shouldn’t be pressed to do, so I don’t do that anymore. I make the ones I

want to make. I have enough high-quality coated silver and pewter that needs polishing—I don’t need another cup. I’m there for pure enjoyment.” I’d rather not see anyone on our team, the other team—or me—get hurt. Let’s have a good time, then let’s go to the Cantina afterwards.
a concern, it’s that in the higher levels of polo, the costs have risen to the point where it is going to limit the number of people who can do it. As long as that gets replaced by better, faster 4-, 6-, or 8-goal polo or pro polo formats, that’s okay—but it does change the game.
What characteristics do you value in a polo pony?
How do you want polo to grow and change in the years to come?
One of my favorite horses I’ve ridden was bred on our farm. He looks like a whopper, but I’ve done more on this horse than probably any other horse I’ve ever owned. If you look at him from a confirmation perspective, you think, “Oh my god.” His upper lip hangs, his lower lip hangs, but he’s just something. Also, I played our stallion in competitive polo for at least 8 years, and he had great ground manners. Great manners in general, and for a stallion, he was so easy around polo and in the sport. He’s retired. All of our horses have a home for life at the farm. Have you had any mentors in polo?

I think organizationally and strategically, the clubs have gotten much more astute in terms of perspective, long-term planning, management, and development. In addition, the horses have gotten better, and the players have gotten better. The speed has increased dramatically—and along with that, the cost of polo has gone up substantially. I used to be able to play 16- and 20-goal polo for what you would spend on 8- or 12-goal polo today, and that’s less than 15 years ago. So truly, if there’s
Joe Walsh, the singer, while on tour with the Eagles, said recently, “I was really good at being 20 in the ’70s. I’m not so good at being 70 in the ’20s.” The lesson is that it’s better to catch people when they’re a bit younger. A 40-yearold successful entrepreneur can come in with the best trailer, the best truck, and buy really good horses, but if they don’t have experience riding and they fall off the horse, sometimes, they’re done pretty quick. With that in mind, we have to focus on supporting peewee, interscholastic, and intercollegiate polo because some of these kids don’t always have the financial resources to do it. For myself, I had to become successful doing something else before I could really play polo. But if you get them in early, then they’ve got the interest, and they can come back to it—I think that’s the path. Maybe we find a way to keep them involved after college, so we can eventually progress them back in. How would you describe your passion for the sport? Well, I think it’s a combination of loving horses, which we do, and loving the life. As we wind up a season in Houston, we will already be planning for winter in the desert. We ship our horses from Wyoming and start riding right away, as soon as we get there. So it’s dogs—lifestyle, horses— lifestyle, polo—lifestyle. Go watch the games— lifestyle. Show up at the Cantina—lifestyle. Some people would say, “Don’t you get tired of these people?” We don’t—because there’s so many of them that we see a diverse slice. Polo is not a sport; it’s a life.

Where Are They Now? Many of North America’s top polo players got their start in Eldorado’s Junior program. Notable alumni include Jeff Hall, Fred Mannix Jr., Jason Crowder, Jesse Bray, Santi Torres, Patrick Uretz, and many more. Here’s an update on just a few of the successful graduates from Eldorado.

The early days of Junior Polo at Eldorado
Junior Polo A Success Story
E
ldorado Polo Club is renowned for the success and longevity of its Junior Polo program. Beginning in the late 1980s and 1990s, when high-goal polo ruled the club, many sponsors and polo families called Eldorado their home over the winter months. This convergence of polo families led to the creation of Eldorado’s Junior program, as the families sought to ensure there was polo for all ages. Corky Linfoot, one of the program’s influential supporters, describes its beginnings: “This was not a ‘build it and they will come’ event. The circumstances at Eldorado were that a multitude of high-goal players and sponsors descended here by the ’90s, and they all had kids of about the same age. The kids were keen to play. They did not need encouragement. So the players rallied together and started the tradition of Peewee Polo every Saturday and Sunday morning.” Most of the program’s participants made use of ponies borrowed from their parents. Linfoot adds, “The majority of the kids were great riders, and the ponies respected the slower speed of kids’ polo.” Jason Crowder, an alumnus of the program, often borrowed horses from his Dad’s string. “I think I got bucked off a few times, but I remember having a great time.” The history of Eldorado’s Junior program owes much to the dedication of its earliest mentors and coaches, including Artie Cameron Sr., Joe Barry, and Steve Crowder, who showed up tirelessly every weekend to ensure that everyone was having fun. Their efforts, as well as the community of dedicated parents and volunteers, ensured the program’s success in its early days. Together, they grew the Junior program from seven kids to upwards of 30. Steve Crowder reflects, “It was and still is a pleasure to see these kids grow into the pros of today and of the future.”

Currently rated 5 goals, Jason Crowder has won MVP honors and played tournaments at Eldorado, Santa Barbara, Grand Champions Polo Club, and National Polo Center in Wellington. He has competed in the St. Moritz and Aspen Snow Polo tournaments, and the Miami Beach Polo World Cup. He played for Team USA in the FIP World Championships and was named MVP in the 2010 Pacific Coast Open. Jason plays his regular seasons at Aspen Valley and Grand Champions polo clubs.
Fred Mannix Fred Mannix is currently rated 7 goals in the United States and Argentina. He is the highest-rated Canadian player and one of the highestrated players to graduate from Eldorado’s Junior program. He has played in the Coronation Cup in England and the Argentine Open. Today, he is a regular participant in high-goal tournaments in Florida and Argentina. His Alegria team were the runners-up in the 2013 Argentine Open and are pursuing the Championship again this season. Fred remembers the Junior program: “I had the best childhood at Eldorado because we had a tight-knit group of boys I grew up with. We were all in the Junior Polo program each weekend morning at 9 a.m., and then we would spend the whole day together playing foot mallet polo. We went everywhere on foot and would hang out at George’s [tack shop] because he and Kelly had drinks and candy! We were able to play a few chukkers on Field 1 before the main game, which was always fun. It gave us the feeling that we had made it to the main stage, and seeing the polo after really gave us something to aspire to.”
Fred Mannix and Team Alegria in the Argentine Open final
Jeff Hall Rated 6 goals, Jeff is a regular player in the Gauntlet of Polo high-goal series played at the National Polo Centre in Wellington, Florida, and in the high-goal series at the Santa Barbara Polo Club. The youngest player ever to be inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame, he is the only player in history to win every high-goal tournament in the country and to win the prestigious Silver Cup a total of 10 times!
Today’s Junior Polo Today, Eldorado’s Junior program offers a safe family polo atmosphere that ensures that kids learn the game while having a blast. Under the guidance of Violeta Escapite for the past eight seasons, the Junior program offers four levels of polo and sees about 35 kids participate each year. From lead line to walk trot, intermediate to advanced, every kid can find a level that is suited to their skillset. Violeta comments that her favorite part of managing the program is seeing the kids graduate through the different levels. “It’s so cool to see them go from walking around on the lead line to running around on a big field!” The program is run with donations from generous families and supported by the Polo Training Foundation. “We don’t charge,” explains Violeta. “Donations pay entirely for our trophies, instructors, umpires, and t-shirts for the kids.” And the generosity of the program’s supporters doesn’t stop at financial donations: many players and parents donate their time and horses to the program. Last year’s instructors included Jake Klentner and Pelon Escapite. Junior tournaments take place once a month throughout the season, giving kids a goal to work toward each month. This season, there will be three junior tournaments: the Joe Barry Memorial Tournament, the Fish Creek Tournament, and the Artie Cameron Memorial Tournament. The program runs every Saturday and Sunday morning throughout the season.
Jeff Hall sets a record for Silver Cup wins
Jesse Bray Seven-goaler Jesse Bray played his first games in the Eldorado Junior program when he was 6 years old. Today, Jesse’s list of accomplishments includes wins in the 16-goal Wellington Polo Tour, as well as the Robert Skene Memorial, Silver Cup, and Pacific Coast Open in Santa Barbara. He’s known as “All Day Jesse Bray” for his powerful skills as a player, as well as his impressive horsemanship. “My favourite part of playing in the Junior program at Eldorado was being with my friends. There was a great group of kids, and we had a ton of fun playing Junior Polo and then playing with our foot mallets for the rest of the day. It was a great experience and a great way to learn to go to the barn early, tack up my horses, and take them over to the field. The program also had great coaching, especially from my Dad and Artie Cameron Sr. and Jr., who both put a ton of effort into the program. Those guys taking time out of their busy schedules meant a lot to us. Their hard work shows by the number of players that came from that program and play high-level polo today.”

National Champions Some of the most exciting up-and-coming players on the North American polo scene are recent graduates and participants of the Eldorado Junior program. The 2023 National Youth Tournament Series Championship Cecil Smith Cup took place in September at New Bridge Polo and Country Club. This year’s final featured a clash between the Central team and the Western team, three-quarters of whom were past Eldorado Junior program graduates: Ryan Kerley, Mica Saracco, and Piers Bossom. A dominant performance in this year’s final has been credited to the Western Team’s strong bond and quick team chemistry. Bossom remarked, “I grew up with Ryan and Mica – I’ve known Will for two years. I played the NYTS with him in Chicago. Knowing them and then being on the field with them is more fun. You know them, and it’s a blast to get to play with your friends.” Saracco added, “It was the dream team. For me, it’s winning with them that means the most.” Ryan Kerley was awarded MVP of the final. “We knew they were going to come out strong and set a presence, but we had our strategy and stuck to it. I think anyone could have gotten MVP that day.” He had this to say about the team’s chemistry: “I couldn’t have asked for a better team with my friends. I’ve known and played with Piers and Mica since we were little in the Eldorado Junior program, and they’ve been some of my best friends

since then. As for Will, he’s become a kind of brother to me. I’m glad we got to have a kind of Last Dance opportunity.” Eldorado Junior program alumnus, Jesse Bray, coached this year’s NYTS Western team, proving the program’s bonds remain intact long after participants graduate from the program.

Tabasco was out of an American thoroughbred mare, a stakes winner and excellent polo horse, sired by The Sergeant - Andy Smith’s black New Zealand bred polo horse. Sergeant Pepper’s offspring are all well built with calm dispositions and athletic ability.

From the Archives The Cantina In 1981, long-time Eldorado manager Alex Jacoy organized the building of the original Cantina at its present-day location on Field 4. The Cantina became a place that brought players, grooms, spectators, and fans together over food, drinks, dancing, karaoke, pool, and of course epic Sunday night polo parties.

Thirty years later, a new and improved Eldorado Cantina opened with an enlarged fieldside patio, full kitchen, horseshoe bar, dance floor and an opening party to remember on December 4, 2011. The Cantina remains a place where the polo community gathers to eat, drink, and celebrate and has also become known across the Coachella Valley as a great place to watch polo and mingle with polo people. Special thanks to long-time Cantina bartender Beverly Llarena for her archival contributions.

GAME DAY GUIDE THE GAME
THE PONIES
The object of the game is to move the polo ball through the goalposts to score. Polo teams change direction after each goal is scored to equalize field and weather conditions. If you see a flag raised at the end of the field, that means a goal was scored!
The ponies make all the difference! Players attribute 80% of their performance to their ponies. Ponies work hard—reaching speeds of up to 35 mph!—so players play a different pony each chukker. Their team of ponies is called their “string.”
Polo matches at Eldorado Polo have either four or six 7-1/2 minute periods called chukkers and a 15-minute halftime. A regulation polo field is equivalent to the size of nine football fields and is the largest playing field in organized sports: 300 yards by 160 yards.
THE RULES The rules of polo are intended to ensure the safety of polo ponies and players. Any infraction of the game rules results in the umpires awarding a penalty shot. Penalty shots range in distance from the goal line depending on the severity of the foul. Play is ruled by the “line of the ball,” a right-of-way established by the path of the traveling ball. Once a player has established that they have the right of way, if an opposing player crosses the line of the ball or approaches the player at too sharp an angle, they will receive a foul. There are two main defensive maneuvers in polo. In a ride-off (or bump), a player can use their pony to push an opposing player and pony off of the line of the ball (like a shoulder check in hockey). Players may also “hook” another player by using their mallet to interfere with their swing.
THE PLAYERS There are four players per team. The players wear numbered jerseys indicating the position they play from 1 to 4. Player 1 is in the most offensive position, while Player 4 is in the most defensive position. The player wearing number 3 is often the captain and the best player on the team. Players have handicaps ranging from -2 to +10. The higher a player’s handicap, the better the player. Many of the world’s top players hail from polo’s modern mecca: Argentina.
THE SPECTATORS Eldorado Polo Club hosts over 10,000 spectators every season. They can enjoy Sunday Polo in the Clubhouse, in Cabanas, or pull right up to the field for some tailgating! The Divot Stomp is a timehonored tradition whereby spectators may walk the field during the game’s halftime to help repair divots made during play (usually with a glass of chilled Champagne in their hand).
