The 2022-2023 polo season begins in December with the Women’s Pacific Coast Open and Women’s Challenge: one of the largest women’s tournaments in North America. Sunday Polo will commence with Opening Day on Sunday, January 8. The Cantina at Eldorado is open for the season and offers indoor and outdoor seating, take-out service, friendly staff, and unparalleled views of Eldorado’s spectacular facilities. The Cantina is open Tuesday through Sunday from mid-October until the end of March.

THE GOVERNOR’S DESK

The Pacific Coast Circuit is one of the most successful in the country. It is home to a record number of USPA members, some of the highest-ranked U.S. clubs, great arena venues, and more. I am excited to announce that our territory has expanded to include several clubs from the Border Circuit: we welcome them and look forward to great things in our future together.

In the recent national meetings of the USPA, the organization deepened its focus on initiatives that have the greatest positive impact on clubs and members. The professional umpire program continues to make games safer and more enjoyable by improving consistency and communication on the field. Another successful program is the Polo Development Initiative (PDI): this funding has helped clubs across the country realize improvements in their facilities and infrastructure.

We have several successful new clubs in our circuit, such as Bonsall Polo Farm and Folded Hills Polo Club, and we see continued growth at several other member clubs, including Cerro

Pampa, South Bay, and La Herradura. OC Polo Club recently hosted the USPA Women’s Arena Open to great success, and our Intercollegiate players continue to excel in programs operated by Megan Judge at Central Coast and at Santa Barbara under Jeff Scheraga.

On a broader level, the recent opening of the National Polo Center (NPC) realizes a long-term commitment to all levels of the sport, and roots our national brand, U.S. Polo Assn., firmly within the polo community. The recent Federation of International Polo (FIP) event hosted at NPC showcased the amazing facility as well as our nation’s strong leadership and depth of talent. Congratulations to silver medal winners Team USA, and a huge thank you to J5 Polo and USPA staff for making the FIP tournament a huge success.

Inspired by women’s leagues hosted at polo clubs across Argentina, Eldorado’s women’s league has found its niche as a stepping stone for newer and seasoned players alike to gain tournament experience and have fun.

Mia Bray, Eldorado’s Polo Coordinator, has been involved in the day-to-day running of the league since its inception. From the start, there was never a strict definition as to the level of play. Instead, Mia’s primary goal was to provide women a chance to increase their time, skill level, and confidence on the field, no matter if they were new or returning to the sport. Mia and the polo office create new teams every week in an effort to give players the chance to play with as many different teammates as possible.

Consensus amongst local and visiting players is that the league is a fun, competitive, and safe space for all. Los Angeles-native Lisa Gonzalez, who took up polo in the spring of 2021, competed in her very first league match in 2022. “It’s an amazing opportunity to play with some of the top women in California. I love the camaraderie, sportsmanship, and competition. Standing on the winner’s podium with my teammates is such a great memory for me! I can’t wait to do it again,” admits Lisa, whose daughter Sierrah also competes in the league.

Mia reports that the women’s league has also served an important role as a launch pad into other levels of club play, including women’s and pro pool tournaments, and the 2- and 4-Goal leagues. Women’s polo promises to continue to flourish at Eldorado, contributing to the fastest growing segment of the sport.

A ROYAL LEGACY

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had a lifelong passion for horse sports. While her first love was horseracing, the love of her life came to be polo: a passion which she shared with her husband and passed down to generations of family members.

The Queen was first exposed to polo in the late 1940s. While new husband Philip was stationed with a naval fleet in the Mediterranean, he took up polo at the historic Malta Polo Club under the guidance of his uncle, respected horseman and player, Admiral Lord Mountbatten. Elizabeth frequented the club in Malta and encouraged Philip’s new polo hobby with enthusiasm.

When the couple returned to England in 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI, Philip continued to pursue polo at Cowdray Park. In 1955, he and the Queen decided to create a polo venue for the family much closer to home, on Smith Lawn at Windsor Great Park. The venue was originally named the Household Brigade Polo Club and as president, Philip’s first order of business was to invite one of Britain’s best players, Archie David, to move his string of 30 ponies to the club. The club subsequently changed its name to Guards Polo Club in 1969.

Queen Elizabeth regularly attended polo games at Guards – and rarely missed a match in which Philip or Charles was competing. She presented more trophies in polo than she did in any other sport, and she was actively involved in the family’s polo breeding operation. One of her most enduring polo legacies is the prestigious Queen’s Cup, a perpetual trophy she presented to Guards Polo Club in 1960. Over the past six decades, the high goal Queen’s Cup tournament has attracted the best players and teams from around the world.

The new monarch, King Charles III, maintains his parent’s passion for the sport of polo: he played for over 40 years across 5 continents. Charles also passed polo down to his sons: Prince William remains a member at Guards Polo Club at Windsor, while Harry recently made Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club his home club.

UMPIRE’S CORNER

Umpires are required to make many difficult decisions over the course of each polo game, while also managing personalities on the field. Fergus Gould, Executive Director of Umpires LLC for the USPA, reports that the organization is making great headway with respect to professional development and technology. As a result, the quality of umpiring is improving at clubs across North America.

To help prepare them for the challenges of the job, professional umpires attend annual training camps. At the most recent camp, 25 umpires assembled for development seminars, and rules and standards of enforcement reviews. Consultants at the training event included Rachelle Strawther of the University of Gonzaga School of Leadership, who shared expert advice on interpersonal communication and emotional intelligence. The umpires also benefitted from the expertise of Echelon Front: a group of ex-Navy Seals who specialize in teaching leadership and problem-solving skills in high pressure circumstances.

Recent technological advances spearheaded by Umpires LLC include instant field-side replay. For the first time, officials in the 12Goal league at Eldorado will have access to a live feed, allowing them to revisit any complicated plays and provide immediate feedback. Also, the PoloSK App is now available to all members of the USPA, giving game officials, clubs, and players immediate access to results, scores, penalty reports, and more.

In other exciting news, Joe Henderson has been appointed as the new Assistant Director of Umpires LLC. No stranger to Eldorado, Joe has been a polo professional for more than 4 decades and brings great insight and experience to his new leadership role.

Danny Juarez joined Umpires LLC in 2019 and is the current captain of the California team. Over the past three years, Danny has worked hard to be accountable and approachable as an umpire: “I always try to give my best to the players. Every call is important in every game. Effective communication between officials and players is crucial.”

Danny recently attended the NASO Sports Officiating Summit in Denver: the only event in the world that focuses on critical topics impacting all aspects of officiating. He had the opportunity to meet and learn from professional officials at the highest levels of sport, from NHL and NFL, college basketball and softball, to tennis and more.

“One of my favorite takeaways from the Summit came from a March Madness basketball referee. He said, ‘there is a very fine line between communication and confrontation.’ I see this to be true all the time. Once the adrenaline hits, players get excited and emotional, and they risk crossing the line. This is exactly the moment when we all need to work harder to keep communication calm and focused. Developing these skills and better awareness in officials is a great objective of Umpires LLC – and it is definitely going to benefit players in the end.”

BEST PLAYING PONIES

VALENCIA

The best playing pony in the 2022 Skins Tournament final, Valencia, has been a stand out in Ben Soleimani’s string since he purchased her from Santi Wulff. This 10-year-old Argentine-bred mare simply loves to play polo. She is extremely consistent, well-balanced, has a nice mouth, and can run like the wind! Valencia has been captained by Ben Soleimani, Santi Von Wernich, and most recently Iñaki Laprida. She has won a series of best playing pony awards at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, including the Lisle Nixon Memorial Tournament.

Valencia usually makes her appearance in the last chukker of games. While she is smaller compared to other ponies, standing at only 14.3 hands, she plays like a giant. She is very strong-willed, never backing down or shying away from a play.

Back in the barn, Valencia naturally maintains great athletic shape and a healthy weight, even though she can be a fussy eater. Ben Soleimani’s team manager Remy Muller admits that Valencia is one of he and his daughter Billy’s favorites: “She is a very quiet and sweet mare, making her a favorite for cuddles.”

SAHARA

Sahara is a feisty, 6-year-old, off-track thoroughbred mare owned by professional player Ulysses Escapite of Bush League Polo Farms. Escapite bought the mare from a trainer in El Paso, Texas in 2021.

Sahara’s happy place is on the polo field: “She is extremely comfortable and relaxed as soon as she sets foot on the field,” describes Escapite. But back at the barn, this excellent mare is a bit of a handful. She can be moody and grumpy (some call it “the curse of the red head mare”), and she is difficult to catch in the pasture unless you have treats for her.

Despite her feisty manners, Sahara is a an exceptional polo pony. She won her first best playing pony award in 2021 in the Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup 8-Goal final. “She never runs out of mouth in the game,” Escapite reports, and she has exceptional balance and athleticism. With such natural skills at a young age, we can expect great things from Sahara for many years to come.

POLOLA

Polola is a 15-year-old thoroughbred mare owned by Luis Saracco and played by his daughter Micaela. Luis and brothers bought Polola from Pepe Heguy when she was just a foal. She was trained and played by Luis until 2017, when Micaela was lucky enough to start playing her.

In the 6 years since then, Micaela and Polola have formed an inseparable bond. The two have a strong trust and read each other perfectly; this connection is evident in every game they play. This past year, Polola received the best playing pony award in the Fish Creek 6-Goal tournament final at Eldorado and in the NYTS Championship at La Herradura.

What makes Polola so special is her knowledge of the game. “She is one of those horses who can anticipate plays,” suggests Micaela. Polola is also incredibly fast and agile, making her a force to be reckoned with on the polo field.

The Saraccos recently decided to retire Polola, finishing her polo career on a high note in 2022. She has moved to a beautiful pasture in Argentina where she will spend her next years as a broodmare. The Saracco family look forward to meeting Polola’s progeny, hoping they share her same passion and talent for the game.

PLAYER PROFILE: SY ZAHEDI

Sy Zahedi’s passion for horses began during his childhood in Iran, where he spent his weekends at his grandfather’s farm, watching his uncles ride and hunt. Sy moved to the U.S. as a teenager, bringing his love for horses with him. Six years ago, he picked up a polo mallet, signed up for lessons, and never looked back.

How did you get introduced to polo?

SZ: I was looking for a sport that I could share with my three sons, and I have always had a strong interest in riding horses. I was invited to watch an arena polo game which first sparked my interest in the sport. My son and I signed up for two arena lessons at OC Polo Club and while he decided it was not for him, I continued to play. When the OC club closed before relocating, I decided I wanted to get more out of the sport and started seeking other ways to play. I was introduced to Virgil Kyle who brought me to Eldorado to take a lesson with his pro, Ulysses Escapite, and I immediately fell in love with outdoor polo. The facilities, the scenery, all the people and horses, it’s just amazing.

What has been the highlight of your polo career?

SZ: Buying my first string of horses has been a highlight. After my first lesson at Eldorado, Memo Gracida took me under his wing. I stayed with him and his training program for quite a while. He has been a huge help in putting together my string.

In your string, do you have a favorite pony?

SZ: My favorite changes every season or sometimes every game. One that has been consistently at the top of the list is Chapo. He is very dependable and has the true heart of a champion. He wants to win as much as I do.

What is the most challenging part of the sport?

SZ: There are a lot of alpha males who play polo. Being able to humble yourself as a student of the game is difficult, but very important. Polo can be dangerous if you do not have a good perspective on your skill level; you risk hurting yourself and others.

What is the most rewarding part of the game?

SZ: The most rewarding aspect is competing with such great athletes – both horses and players. It’s rare in team sports to have such great ability from both species that results in such beauty and performance.

What would your advice be for someone looking to get into polo?

SZ: My advice would be to mount yourself the best that you can and surround yourself with

people who you are able to trust. Fitness is also important as polo is an extremely physically demanding sport.

Do you have an ultimate polo goal?

SZ: One of my goals is to accelerate the learning curve. I want to get to a place where I can be a strong asset to my team, and I feel like I have been able to do that recently. I am hoping to continue this progress during the upcoming 12 Goal season at Eldorado.

MUSTANG

AN ELDORADO ICON

If you visited Eldorado Polo Club or Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2022, you experienced the towering 27 x 44-foot Mustang sculpture that runs proudly along the northwest side of Field 1. Mustang is the work of DKLA Design, founded and run by Don Kennell and Lisa Adler. Working together, Don leads design and fabrication, while Lisa focuses on community engagement. The result? Wonderful public art that is enjoyed by countless people, including members and guests at Eldorado.

PUBLIC ART

The partnership between Goldenvoice, the Coachella festival, and Don and Lisa began in 2013. Event organizers put out an open call for artwork to be featured on the festival grounds. Excited by the prospect of having their work displayed at a world-renowned venue, Don and Lisa submitted a large piece of finished work, and it was accepted right away. Following the event, Goldenvoice purchased the piece from Don and Lisa and kept it on the grounds for the following season. Since then, DKLA has created seven unique pieces for the Coachella festival.

Don and Lisa love being part of the annual event and creating pieces that are enjoyed and appreciated by the thousands of festival attendees: “Our designs draw people in and develop a relationship that connects the viewer to the place and the art, which becomes a part of a person’s experience. This

symbiosis between the location, the artwork and viewer is significant. It is the goal of public art: to bring art into peoples’ lives.”

As part of an ongoing effort of community-building, the Coachella festival contributes to La Quinta as well as other cities in the surrounding area, and three of the seven DKLA sculptures have been donated thus far. In La Quinta, you can experience DKLA’s large Roadrunner, Road Trip, at the roundabout at Jefferson and 52nd Avenue; in Indio, the Yard Dog sculpture resides in a park off 48th Avenue; and in Coachella, Big Bear welcomes visitors to Shady Lane Park off Harrison Street.

FROM THE GROUND UP

DKLA takes a synergistic approach in planning, designing, and building their installations. The process is extremely collaborative and begins with preliminary drawings that lead to a chosen animal. A focus on much-loved animals that are native to the desert and to California inspires their work: “We want each piece to bring people heart.”

The Coachella festival gives Don and Lisa artistic license with each piece, making only one request each subsequent year: to make the next piece even bigger than the last! “The horse sculpture seemed like the next logical next step to us. The horse plays a significant role in human history and is a beloved symbol of the west,” suggests Lisa and Don, who also intended the sculpture to honor the polo ponies that share the grounds with festival goers.

While most polo ponies are of thoroughbred origin, DKLA’s sculpture was modeled after an American mustang horse. The entire process from planning to completion of Mustang took the DKLA team four months. A large crew consisting of Don and five others built the sculpture in pieces

in their shop in New Mexico. They chose to use steel, because it is a material that tells the story of the strength of the horse and reflects the palate of the desert sun and its surroundings.

A week before delivery was scheduled to Coachella, Don and Lisa were informed that the festival had been cancelled due to Covid-19. So they decided to erect Mustang at their home studio until the festival was rescheduled. In the end, the DKLA team was grateful to have this time to enjoy their creation before passing it on to the rest of the world! The sculpture is one of both Don and Lisa’s favorite pieces.

CLUB ICON

Alongside the many structural challenges in the fabrication process, DKLA felt additional pressure to deliver a horse sculpture that would earn the respect of the polo and equine community. And their efforts met with success!

Mustang is already an icon at Eldorado. Members and guests, young and old, are drawn to the impressive structure. “You can see the sculpture from almost anywhere at the club. But once you get close to it, you really experience its character and the detail involved,” shares Andrea Salas, Marketing & Events Director. Salas also suggests that Mustang has become a destination of its own: it’s a popular spot for photos, an easy place to meet up with visitors, and a great place to catch some shade on a hot day.

At the opposite end of Eldorado Field 1 resides another of DKLA’s creations: RamJam. And while the impressive ram sculpture also has a loyal fan base, it seems that Mustang has stolen this desert community’s heart.

BEHIND THE LENS

Capturing all the action and emotion of the polo season is truly an art form. With a record number of games and events on the schedule, club photographers have their work cut out for them. Here we meet Kerri Kerley and Kaile Roos, the talented women behind the lens, who create and curate Eldorado’s collection of annual photographs and unforgettable memories.

EXPERT EYE: KERRI KERLEY

Kerri Kerley’s experience behind the camera began in Calgary, Canada, where she hosted a TV show dedicated to pets and pet care. There were 27 episodes each season, all of which Kerri managed in-studio. When motherhood called, Kerri took a break from her career but later stepped back into her work from behind the lens, rather than in front of it.

Kerri began photography and videography work at the Calgary Polo Club in 1999, documenting the competitive 20-Goal league for several seasons. In 2004, club patron Fred P. Mannix gifted Kerri her first professional camera and she became the club’s official photographer.

Outside of Calgary, Kerri spent her time in Palm Desert, travelling alongside her husband Mike. It was here that she focused in on her skills: practicing shooting as many games as she could and gaining as much experience as possible. Kerri is now entering her sixth year as the official photographer at Eldorado and is grateful for the opportunity to do something she loves every day.

The most time-consuming part of the job, Kerri admits, is sorting through thousands of photos to filter out the very best shots. But this is also one of her favorite aspects of the process: discovering “the unknown,” as she calls it. Back at her desk after a busy polo weekend, Kerri sifts through and edits her work. “I never know what I have until I sort through photo by photo, and discover the details that I didn’t see during

the game. A horseshoe flying through the air, a funny facial expression, or two mallets wrapping around each other in an aggressive hook.”

One such instance became her favorite shot of all time; she calls it the “horse biting incident.” In a ride off between two players, one of the horses opened its mouth to grab the other players’ arm! No players or horses were injured, and the photo went viral.

This past summer Kerri spent time shooting at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, including all of Prince Harry’s matches. She was contacted by countless media outlets almost daily, requesting her images. “Being at the games was one thing, but the hounding of the media really made it an experience I’ll never forget. They also didn’t like that I said no to almost all of their requests!”

Kerri’s husband and children are all competitive polo players, and while she makes it to every one of their games, she is often busy taking photos. But this works to her advantage in the end: “I get to be there for them, but I can’t get overly nervous or too involved from the sidelines,” she laughs, “…turns out, you can’t be a helicopter mom from behind the lens!”

Polo photographer Kaile Roos was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, which led her to shy away from reading and writing and move towards the creative arts. She credits her high school art teacher for inspiring her interest and perspective: “She taught me to look at the world through a different lens, and the importance of angles, lighting, and timing.”

Kaile also credits her parents for sharing in, and supporting, her interest in art and photography: “They always encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming a photographer. I would not be where I am today without their love and encouragement, because it hasn’t been the easiest road.”

Kaile was first introduced to polo at Colorado State University. An accomplished rider, she took naturally to the sport and joined the CSU polo team. Her interest and skill in photographing polo followed naturally from there.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography, Kaile traveled down to Eldorado Polo Club for the winter season, on the advice of her friend Sierra Dunbar. She showed up with three polo ponies and a camera, not knowing what to expect.

“I was completely blown away by the views and the backdrop of the mountains, it didn’t look real.” That season she attended as many games as she could, and she has returned every year since: “In the few years I have spent there, I have grown so much as a photographer and a player. I’m very thankful for the opportunities Eldorado has given me.”

The most challenging aspect of the job, Kaile admits, is file management. Finding an efficient photo organization system is not a simple task. At an average polo game, Kaile takes upwards of 1,500 photos, and she often shoots 3 or 4 games per day on the weekends: “The sheer volume of images can be overwhelming.”

Capturing the moments that people don’t see at first glance is a highlight for Kaile: “I love bringing small details to light.” And she has also learned an important life lesson from her craft: “The camera –never leave home without it! It feels like a burden sometimes, but some of the best photos I have ever taken were spontaneous. You just never know when you will come across something that inspires you to jump behind the lens.”

LA QUINTA RESORT

A History of Celebrity

La Quinta Resort and Club is the most renowned resort in the desert valley and one of only two California establishments to have a city named after it – the other being the Beverly Hills Hotel. Originally opened in 1926, the early La Quinta Hotel featured 20 charming guest casitas as well as one of the region’s first golf courses – and it quickly became a Hollywood hotspot. Fast forward almost a century, and the character and charm of the destination remains the same, as does its reputation for attracting celebrities, icons, and leaders to its historic California grounds.

La Quinta: a Spanish word for a type of hacienda or villa and also means "fifth" (as in the fifth stop on the mission trail).

Location, Location

La Quinta Resort is nestled into the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, within easy driving distance of Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and dozens of beach cities. In 1921, Walter Morgan, of Morgan Oyster Company fame, moved to the desert and began plans for a secluded retreat in Marshall’s Cove, which later became La Quinta Cove. Story has it that Morgan chose the hotel’s name after hearing local ranchers describe La Quinta: a hacienda or estate with a large house surrounded by smaller casitas. Another version of the hotel’s name credits the destination as the fifth stop on the mission trail from Mexico up the coast of California.

Morgan hired renowned architect Gordon Kaufmann to build the hotel, and in December 1926 they opened the doors. From the very start, Morgan envisioned the resort as a getaway for Hollywood’s finest, by personally inviting businesspeople and icons from within the entertainment

industry. One major draw for this enclave was the resort’s location within the “two-hour studio rule.” Hollywood stars were permitted to vacation within two hours of Hollywood, in case a studio head, director, or producer needed them back at work. As word spread around Hollywood that La Quinta was the best destination within the travel bubble, increasing numbers of actors, writers, and performers made the resort their private escape.

Producer and writer Frank Capra, who was the creative force behind several major films of the 1930s and 1940s, adapted his script for “It Happened One Night” while at the resort, and the film went on to win numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hoping to recreate this success, Capra returned to the resort year after year to work on scripts for film classics such as “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” “You Can’t Take It With You,” and “Lost Horizon.” Capra’s fondness for the resort added to the buzz amongst Hollywood’s elite.

Greta Garbo and actor John Gilbert visited the hotel often, eventually leasing La Casa, a private home built on resort property.

The hotel’s first tennis coach, Fred Renker, had regular training sessions with Gary Cooper, Lana Turner, and Jane Wyman.

Mari Dressler, Shirley Temple, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, and Erroll Flynn were all regular visitors at the hotel.

40s

The Hotel closed in 1942, until the end of WWII. John Balaban purchased the hotel in 1945 and installed an airstrip to ease the re-arrival of Hollywood’s elite.

50s

Ginger Rogers married Jacques Bergerac in front of the resort’s waterfall.

Dorothy Arzner, the first American female film director, owned a suite in the hotel, where she came to relax and work.

The hotel was sold to Chicago attorney Leonard Ettleson and all the buildings were painted pink, Ettleson’s wife’s favorite color.

Ettleson and his associates developed La Quinta Country Club golf course, which became a popular destination for celebrities and political figures, including President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

80s

The city of La Quinta was incorporated, named after the historic hotel and resort.

Still the One

La Quinta continues to be a top destination for celebrities visiting the desert valley – from musicians performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to top tennis players competing at the BNP Paribas. Tennis legends such as Roger Federer and Andy Roddick have been spotted practicing on the pristine resort courts. Jane Fonda visited and participated in the TEDWomen conference. And stars like Matthew McConaughey, Bill Murray, and Samuel L. Jackson have played the resort’s world-renowned golf courses.

At the annual Desert Smash charity tennis event, celebs like Kevin Hart, Will Ferrell, and Justin Bieber hit La Quinta’s stadium court to raise funds in support of California charities. Entertainment icons are joined at the event by tennis legends such as Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and John and Mike Bryan.

Susan Stovall, 1945-2022

With the passing of Eldorado’s leading lady, Susan Stovall, many players, sponsors, and friends have voiced their admiration of her inspiring 26-year career as Eldorado’s first woman polo manager.

But there was so much more to Susan Stovall than her work. Through some of the memories of just a few of those closest to her (please note she had a lot of friends!), we get a glimpse behind this leading lady’s career as polo manager, and we celebrate the simply fantastic human being that she was.

When I moved down to the desert to take over management of Eldorado, I soon realized that I needed help. I talked Susan Stovall into coming down from Spokane to help manage the club, and 26 years later she was still here!

Susan and I shared so many great memories – huge tournaments and events, princes and princesses, U.S. Opens, and everything in between. We worked really hard together at Eldorado and then we played hard also! One of the best recollections I have is of the wild party we had for her 50th birthday party at the Clubhouse. But my most important memory of Susan is of her friendship, energy, and enthusiasm, which were matched only by her dedication to the sport itself.

Susan was an incredible person of the highest quality. She could pick up the phone to call someone on the other side of the world, and get a deal done, just like that. She had quality relationships with people because they respected her. I remember when Susan got Major Ronald Ferguson to come play at White Swan, for a polo fundraising event for the local college – no one else could have done that! That was the strength of Susan’s relationships with people. I’ll miss her great stories and friendship. She meant every word she said. And that is a rare and amazing quality that she possessed.

Susan and I played together for 10 fabulous years and we traveled the world competing in tournaments. Everywhere we played, Susan encouraged people to visit Eldorado. We played against the Princess of Brunei in a women’s tournament at Ascot, and Susan convinced the Princess to bring her team and entourage to Eldorado. Susan and I also made polo history with an allwomen’s team beating 15 mixed teams in 4-Goal league play.

Susan was the best ambassador of polo. She worked tirelessly for the sport. She deserves all the credit for her work and accomplishments. As Ambassador Glen Holden says, “She should be first in line to receive The Philip Iglehart Award from the Museum of Polo’s Hall of Fame.”

Susan was the ultimate life enthusiast. She was self confident, funny, and always genuinely interested in others. One of my fondest memories was on one of our many international trips, to Palermo Field #1 in Argentina along with Kate Weber, Kristy Outhier, and the late great Sunny Hale. It was an unforgettable experience, and of course Susan organized and captained the entire event.

Susan was an irreplaceable friend, and a polo legend respected by everyone who was lucky enough to know her. I will miss her intently listening to my stories of frustration and then looking me dead in the eye and telling me: “You’ll be fine.” I always trusted her when she told me these words, and she was always right.

When I first got into polo, there were very few women competing. Susan’s advice to me was “just be quiet out there, even if it hurts.” Turns out, there were quite a few games that hurt. But I was stronger for not complaining; Susan’s advice served me well throughout my career.

During a tragic time in my life, following the passing of my youngest son Nick, Susan stepped in. She understood my family’s loss and invited me (a.k.a. told me) to come to Costa Carayes Polo Club in Mexico, where she was Manager. I spent several subsequent seasons with her in Mexico, and she introduced me to the most wonderful people, including the Falk family. I can honestly say that Susan saved my life – she was there for me when I didn’t know how or what I could possibly do next.

So much polo happened because of Susan. But beyond her skills as the ultimate polo manager, Susan was the ultimate friend.

I always say Susan wasn’t a mere mortal but a “force of nature.” She took any setbacks in stride, had no time for self-pity, and always carried on. With Susan it wasn’t yes or no, but simply how. She really could accomplish anything you put to her.

Susan was very adventurous, had a no-nonsense attitude, and didn’t mince words, which I considered to be part of her charm. She gave my husband Fergus his start in professional umpiring in St. Tropez and taught me a lot about being a strong woman in polo and standing your ground. She was a great role model for anyone – man or woman.

Countless times I’ve been fieldside or at a restaurant with Susan in what I would call her “happy place” – a glass of rosé in her hand, surrounded by handsome polo players, a glint in her eye as she put together a team or a tournament, with a broad smile across her face. That is how I’ll remember her best.

Polo Stallions Standing Stud at Rancho Remuda

Sergeant Pepper is a third-generation polo stallion, 15.2 hands tall. He is out of Annie, a Bob Anderson bred thoroughbred polo horse, by Sergeant Tabasco. Tabasco was out of an American thoroughbred mare, a stakes winner and excellent polo horse, sired by The Sergeant - Andy Smith’s black New Zealand bred polo horse. Sergeant Pepper’s offspring are all well built with calm dispositions and athletic ability.

Also now standing stud at Rancho Remuda: Sergeant Mesquite, out of Marcella, by Sergeant Pepper. Marcella’s first baby, Silver lining, by Sergeant Tabasco, is playing high goal under Magoo Laprida. JUNIOR POLO

Eldorado is home to one of the largest and most successful junior polo programs in the nation. Throughout the season, junior players compete in four different levels, starting with the leadline group all the way up to the advanced level. A series of annual tournaments allows players to compete for prizes and awards, including the Fish Creek Tournament, the Jackson Hole Horse Emporium Tournament, the Breva Farms Tournament, as well as National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) sanctioned events.

The program depends on a host of volunteers, instructors, umpires, parents, and of course, safe and reliable ponies. With dozens of juniors participating each weekend, the program also relies on the dedicated work of Violeta Escapite, who organizes teams, games, prizes and events. Thank you Violeta and good luck to all junior players in 2023!

GAME DAY GUIDE

Starting Play & Scoring Goals:

To start the game, the umpire bowls-in the ball between a line-up of two teams at center field. The main objective is to then put the ball between the goal posts.

If you see a flag raised at the end of the field – a goal was scored! After each goal, teams change goal-ends and return to center for another bowl-in.

Polo

Polo balls measure 3 to 3½ inches in diameter and are made of hard plastic. A polo mallet is made of a flexible bamboo shaft and a hardwood head. The length of mallets ranges from 49 to 54 inches, and players must carry the mallet in their right hand.

Handicaps & Player Positions:

Each player earns a handicap ranging from -1 Goals to 10 Goals. The higher the handicap, the better the player. The numbers on the players’ jerseys (1, 2, 3, 4) indicate what position they are playing on the field.

Polo Ponies: Most polo ponies are thoroughbred or part thoroughbreds, selected for their agility, speed, and intelligence.

Players play at least one pony per chukker and often bring a few “spare” ponies in case one of their mounts gets fatigued. Ponies’ manes are shaved and their tails are braided to prevent becoming entangled with players’ reins or mallets during the game.

Ball:

This is the most important rule on the field. An imaginary line is created every time the polo ball is struck. The player who is closest to it with the narrowest angle has the right of way to approach the ball.

The Field & Game Officials:

Outdoor polo is played on a field measuring 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. That’s nine football fields! Every game is officiated by two mounted Umpires, and one Referee (or “Third Man”) on the sidelines.

Defensive Moves: Like a shoulder check in hockey, a ride-off (or bump) allows players to use their ponies to push an opposing player and pony off of the line of the ball. Players may also perform a hook, by using their mallet to interfere with another player’s swing.
