WELCOME

As we begin our 68th season of polo at Eldorado, we are pleased to announce new and exciting changes to the club. Over the past eight months, Eldorado has undergone an exciting revamp in structure and management.

We have adopted a new Board of Directors that represents a culmination of age, experience, and gender to ensure equality for players and guests alike. In addition, we have formed a robust management team that has decades of experience in polo club operations and event management. Bob Puetz, Executive Director, leads the new club team: Mark Wates, Polo Manager; Bryan Middleton, Assistant Polo Manager; Neasa Ferrau, Events and Clubhouse Director; Diane Thacker, Controller; Miguel Ramos, Field Manager; Kerri Kerley, Photographer and Social Media Manager; and Sam Devane, Polo Office Administrator.

This year promises to deliver some of the most competitive winter polo in the country. Eight teams will compete in the 2025 12-goal tournament series, featuring many new professionals, sponsors, and top-level polo horses. In addition to the highly anticipated 12-goal series, we will host 8-,6-,4- and 2-goal tournaments, along with our Women’s, Coachella, and Stagecoach leagues and our junior polo program. Team rosters and schedules are available on our website at eldoradopoloclub.com.

The Eldorado Polo and Riding Academy, managed by professional player and instructor Kyle Fargey, offers opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play polo. The academy is open from December through March, and we encourage everyone to try their hand at what we believe to be the most exciting and rewarding equestrian sport.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Levy Restaurants, our new food and beverage partner. Levy boasts national notoriety in restaurant and event management and will be providing food and beverage service for all the Clubhouse polo events throughout the season. Levy will also manage Eldorado’s on-site Cantina Restaurant.

We have expanded our public polo events to include six casual Saturday events from mid-February through March. These events will showcase a variety of different Eldorado league games in a more casual setting than Sunday polo. We will offer tailgating, Clubhouse tables, VIP admission, and private cabana rentals at these games.

We welcome all of you to this exciting new chapter at Eldorado and extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, advertisers, players, guests, and attendees for all your continued support and loyalty. We look forward to an exciting season filled with great polo and fun for all.

Sincerely,

SEASON SPONSORS

PUPPY LOVE

If there is one thing the polo community agrees upon, it’s a love for dogs. So, when the Animal Rescue Center of California (ARC) needed a new transport van to facilitate their rescue efforts, a generous group of polo players stepped up to help.

The initiative was spearheaded by player Kate Weber, who helped run the fundraising campaign and spread the word about ARC’s work in the desert valley. Thanks to many kind donors, ARC has a new transport van that is critical to its work. The large van is insulated and retrofitted with air conditioning, so that ARC may pick up large loads of stray dogs year-round in the desert, including the hot summer months. It also improves ARC’s ability to secure veterinary attention for dogs they rescue. Vet care in the valley has become increasingly expensive, with most clinics now corporately owned. As an alternative, the ARC van transports large loads of dogs across the border into Mexico, where vet care is more accessible.

The generosity of the polo community made it possible for ARC to touch the lives of more dogs in need in the Coachella Valley. Recently the organization used their van to make a record save of sixteen small dogs from an abandoned home near the Salton Sea.

ABOUT ANIMAL RESCUE CENTER OF CALIFORNIA

Kirk and Noelle Geiger founded ARC as a grassroots rescue center for stray dogs in the Coachella Valley. A labor of love for the Geigers, Kirk remarks, “Nothing gives us greater joy than rescuing a dog in need and placing it into a loving home.” With increasing numbers of stray dogs in the region, the Geigers look forward to purchasing a large property in the east end of the valley, where they can construct a badly needed rescue shelter to service the multitude of dogs in the area. How can you help? ARC accepts donations through their website and hosts a handful of fundraising events each year. Visit thearc-ca.org to donate or browse their selection of adorable rescue pups available for adoption!

FAN FARE

Eldorado Polo Club welcomes Levy Restaurants as our new food and beverage provider at the Cantina, Clubhouse, and at Sunday Polo.

Levy (pronounced LEE-VEE) originated the concept of sports catering, by bringing fine dining and elevated beverage services to sports stadiums in the Midwest. Their first foray into the business was the old Comiskey Park, followed by Wrigley Stadium, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward 40 years, and Levy is renowned for their world-class hospitality at more than 350 sports and entertainment venues, cultural attractions, special events, and convention centers. They work alongside the NFL, NBA, NHL, motorsports, horse racing, tennis, and now… Eldorado Polo.

What can you expect from Levy? They specialize in foods that sports fans crave—along with enhanced guest experiences, expanded culinary options, and thoughtful wine and beverage menus.

LEADING THE CHARGE

Eldorado proudly welcomes a host of new and returning staff to the polo office, fields, cantina, and clubhouse!

Executive Director Bob Puetz brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience with a career that spans over four decades in the world of polo; including twenty-five years as a professional polo player, decades of managing esteemed polo clubs, events, and enterprises, and as the Executive Director and CEO of the United States Polo Association. The new management team is led by Mark Wates, who has played professionally for decades (achieving a 4-goal handicap) and has over 20 years experience managing polo clubs, including Kingston Polo Club in Jamaica and Denver Polo Club in Colorado. Also joining the team is Bryan Middleton as assistant polo manager. Bryan is no stranger to Eldorado: he has been playing polo since he was young and has been a professional player and horse trainer for more than 25 years.

Kerri Kerley returns as club photographer, as well as the new digital and social media manager. Kerri is a renowned polo photographer, who has captured polo at several clubs across North and South America. She and her family have been involved with polo at Eldorado for over 20 years, and her images have also graced many covers of the annual Eldorado Polo Magazine. Kyle Fargey also returns as head instructor of the Eldorado Polo & Riding Academy, bringing more than 15 years of coaching experience, a string of reliable school horses, and a enthusiastic team of assistant instructors.

Neasa Ferrau will be stepping up as the new events and clubhouse director. Neasa has an extensive background in the food and beverage industry and a keen understanding of polo in the desert. She looks forward to working alongside the Levy Restaurant team to further enhance our member and guest experiences.

Diane Thacker continues in her position as controller, bringing years of experience, insight, and attention to detail to her role. And Miguel Ramos continues as field manager: running a hardworking crew who always ensure that the fields and facilities are in great shape for the season.

POLO FOR ALL

Eldorado Polo Club was founded by polo players with the interests of polo players in mind. For club management, this means offering polo that caters to all, whether it is junior players new to the game or experienced sponsors and professionals seeking a competitive challenge. The Coachella, Stagecoach, and Women’s leagues are an important part of this polo-forall mentality, offering sponsors fun, safe, competitive polo that is not solely about winning.

This year’s Coachella league offers competitive six-chukker games that will welcome experienced players into an open style of play. “We want to get the sponsors involved in a higher level of polo, and we do this by having higher level professionals out there to keep the game moving and to keep sponsors engaged,” suggests Polo Manager Mark Wates.

The Stagecoach league welcomes new sponsors to the game, offering good polo and helpful coaching at a reasonable price. Wates emphasizes that the “Stagecoach league is a way to get people going in the sport, while also developing their understanding, and making sure they are involved in the game itself.”

Another popular initiative is the monthly Women’s league, which caters to female players, the fastest-growing demographic in the United States Polo Association. Wates comments, “It’s essential to get women playing more polo, to try and create more sponsors in both women’s and mixed leagues. We do this by offering a playing field where they can excel. Maybe we have the next Hope Arellano in our midst!”

BEST PLAYING PONIES

DOLFINA DISNEY

The moment Santi von Wernich first rode Dolfina Disney, he knew she was special. Dolfina Disney came to Santi by way of Cotterel Polo Farms in Idaho. Before joining Santi’s string, she was piloted by professional players Jejo Taranco and Roberto Zedda.

The 8-year-old chestnut mare was bred by J5 Arg, out of one of Pelon Stirling’s best mares, Daisy.

What makes Dolfina Disney the complete polo pony? “She’s super handy and has a big heart, and she gives everything she has on the field,” admits Santi. Dolfina Disney’s excitement for polo also sets her apart from most other mounts. She is not shy about expressing her enthusiasm for the game, often signaling her excitement with a playful buck…or two! And even Santi admits that he must be prepared for these bursts of enthusiasm, so he does not end up on the wrong side of her.

With many more seasons to come, the future is bright for Dolfina Disney. She ended last winter with Best Playing Pony honors in the prestigious Rossmore Skins Cup Final. Without a doubt, this feisty mare has countless prizes in her future.

ORIENTAL ROSARIO

Meet Oriental Rosario, a 12-year-old bay mare out of Pelon Stirling’s breeding program. Pipe Marquez was involved in training this talented mare in Argentina, until Grant Palmer purchased her in 2019. Oriental Rosario quickly rose to the top of Grant’s string, helping him clinch the Best String award last season in Santa Barbara, and the Best Playing Pony award in the 2024 8-goal Fish Creek Constitution Cup.

Standing only 15.1 hands high, Oriental Rosario is known for her speed and maneuverability on the field. She gives every chukker her all, no matter what day of the week or level of play. Remembering the Pacific Coast Open semi-final game last year, Grant remarks: “I played her a whole chukker in the 20-goal and she was incredible, especially at that level. I can always win plays and pass other players when I’m on her.”

Off the field, Oriental Rosario is the sweetheart of the Antelope barn. She has a curious and friendly disposition, and has a quirky habit of sticking her tongue out the side of her mouth. When she gets to the field, however, this mare is all business. Watch out for Oriental Rosario and Grant Palmer in the Eldorado 12-goal this season!

BLANCA

Blanca has been with Cory Williams since the beginning of her polo career. A top performer in her string, the 13-year-old mare has taken Cory from a 0 to a 5-goal women’s handicap in under 8 years. With a resume that includes everything from 2-goal arena polo to 12-goal mixed polo and a host of Best Playing Pony awards, it’s clear that Blanca is a pony that can do it all.

Blanca’s story begins at a racetrack in Arizona where she was discovered by Central Coast Polo’s Megan Judge and Ted Okie. A few months later, Cory purchased the five-year-old mare, who still had a lot to learn about the game. “She was still a little green when I got her, and as much as I’d like to take credit for her training, she really taught herself,” Cory remarks.

A classic chestnut mare, Blanca has strong opinions and takes her job very seriously. Quick and agile, she rarely needs to bump other horses, instead preferring to run right past them: “I always get to the ball first when I’m on her. She reads the play for me. I don’t have to ask her to go, I just think go and she’ll do it,” says Cory.

Each season, Cory and Blanca push each other to the next level. So far, Blanca has collected five Best Playing Pony awards, and her talents run the gamut from women’s and arena polo to NYTS tournaments. Cory adds, “She would probably have even more awards, if only I could make it into more tournament finals!”

FIGURITA

Meet Figurita, Felipe Saracco’s 8-year-old paint mare. Luis Saracco first laid eyes on Figurita at his brother’s polo farm in Argentina, and he sensed that she would make the perfect pony for his son Felipe. Soon after Figurita arrived in California, Luis got to work on her training. The mare had too much energy for young Felipe to start, but she soon came to understand her job and win everyone over at Felipe’s junior polo games.

Figurita is incredibly agile with a smooth short stride, making her a perfect pony for learning to play. Her small size and great handling allow Felipe to easily maneuver around other players and ponies to get to the ball. Young Felipe admits; “She makes the game easy for me. I’m always close to the ball on her and I can use my lightest and shortest mallet!”

MEET THE PLAYERS

ULYSSES ESCAPITE

Handicap: 4

Team: Bush League

Helmet Color: Grey

How many years have you played polo?

I learned to play when I was 8 years old in Mexico, and I’ve been playing ever since. I went pro 21 years ago.

How did you get started in the sport?

My dad played a little bit, and he introduced my brother and I to the sport.

What do you love most about the sport?

The horses. I love working with them every day, and also getting to play competitively on them. It’s great to experience the results of hard work paying off on the field!

Who is your favorite horse?

My best horse is Simon. I’ve had him for 6 years. He is really talented and has a great attitude.

What is your most memorable win?

Definitely the 2024 Skins Game with my brother Pelon, my friend Virgil, and his son, Quinn, who I have been playing with for years. We were underrated and we had to work hard all season. Everything really came together for us that day – it was an unforgettable win.

What is your advice to new players starting out in the sport?

Ride, ride, and ride some more. It doesn’t matter how many hours you spend stick and balling, sometimes you just need to work on riding the horse. The better horseman or horsewoman you are, the better player you will be.

Look for Ulysses at Eldorado this season, competing with the Bush League team in the 8-goal and 12-goal leagues.

JULIE REESKE

Handicap: -0.5

Team: Rancho del Sol

Helmet Color: Navy Blue

How many years have you played polo?

Trick question! I played for 4 years when I was in my late teens and early 20s, and then I took a 30-year sabbatical. I have been back at it for 3 years now. I guess you could say I missed my window, but I’m enjoying being back at it regardless!

How did you get started in the sport?

My sister, Karen Reese, has been playing her whole life. Whenever I would visit her in Wyoming, I would stick and ball her horses, and eventually she signed me up to play the Margarita League. The rest is history. I was hooked…again!

What do you love about the sport?

The camaraderie and the competition. I have been involved in other equestrian sports, and there’s nothing like being super competitive on the field and when you’re done you go to the Cantina and just have fun. My daughter has also started playing so I’m enjoying the family aspect now. There’s been such a change for the positive in women’s polo too. It’s really inspiring the network and camaraderie that exists on and off of the field for women.

What is your most memorable win?

The 4-goal George Conkwright win last year was my favorite. I grew leaps and bounds during that tournament, and I had the help of a great team. They were all so supportive, and I progressed as a rider and competitor. I definitely saw the difference in my game. It was a special win because we all really worked hard for it.

Do you have any advice for new players starting out in the sport? I think that the horses you buy, and who you buy them from, is very important. This really dictates what your experience with polo will be. Above all, be a rider first, the game will come.

Look for Julie playing the Women’s Pacific Coast Open and the 4-goal league at Eldorado in January and February.

NICO NIERENBERG

Handicap: -0.5

Team: Persyst Polo

Helmet Color: Green

How many years have you played polo?

This will be my fifth season playing polo, I started in the fall of 2020.

How did you get started in the sport?

I was a showjumper for a long time before switching over to polo. We had a house in La Quinta and through showjumping I got to know Chris Maloney, from Twin Palms Polo. When COVID hit, I had recently retired from showjumping and I was looking for things to do. Chris connected me with Tim Rudy for lessons. I spent the first month of my polo career with Eric Wright, Leandro Floccari, and Vlad Rivkin, and they really made for a great experience. I initially thought I would just do it for a season, but I got hooked. We jumped into the 4-goal that season and I never looked back.

What do you love about the sport?

I like the speed; I like to go as fast as I can on a horse. In other disciplines, you can’t get that, but in polo they’re always telling me to go faster and that’s exactly what I want to do! I also love trying to figure out game strategy, and how I can help my team and not hurt it. The mental aspect and understanding the rules is challenging and also rewarding.

What is your most memorable win?

Definitely when my Persyst team won the 4-goal Coachella Valley Officers Cup in January 2022. It was myself, Tim Rudy, Kim Kelly, and Dayelle Fargey, and we were playing on Field One. It was a great team and so much fun. They’re a big part of why I enjoyed my first polo seasons so much. To win something that early in my polo career was just the greatest thing!

Do you have any advice for new players starting out in the sport?

My start was so different because I came from such a strong riding background. For me, it has worked well to lease horses, which I know can be a bit controversial. But in my experience, your needs change so rapidly when you’re learning and climbing the ranks; leasing has allowed me to constantly adjust my string depending on my skill level.

That said, do you have a favorite pony?

Yes absolutely! I lease my horses from Toto Socas and his horse Suerte, which I’ve leased for the last three years, is hands down my favorite. I wish I had four of her! When I’m playing her, I almost look like I know what I’m doing.

Look for Nico with his team Persyst playing the January 8-goal and the February and March 12-goal tournaments this season.

LESLEY TIMS

Handicap: 0.5

Team: Wild Polo

Helmet Color: Lilac

How did you get started in polo?

I learned to play in 2016. At the time I was working for Ron Mathison, and when Ron realized I knew how to ride he suggested I learn to play polo. I’m ashamed to admit, I didn’t know a thing about polo when he suggested it! I took lessons at the Calgary Polo Academy with Kyle Fargey, quit my job, and went to Argentina that Fall to fully immerse myself in the sport.

What do you love about polo?

It’s so challenging and impossible to master. I love how it really forces you to focus on the game. That and there’s always more to learn!

What’s your most memorable win?

We won the Governor’s Cup a few years ago with Boss Polo (myself, Remy du Celliee Muller, Bayne Bossom, and Jared Sheldon). I scored an amazing goal at the end of the game that I will never forget. We came through the tournament undefeated, but in the final we came close to losing and really had to pull it together for the win. We earned it in the end!

What is your advice to new players in the sport?

Learn as much as possible, ask questions, and compile all the info you gather before you decide what advice works best for you. And practice, practice, practice. For me, having mentors has really contributed to my game and learning process.

Who are a few of your polo mentors?

Ron Mathison and Marcelo Abbiati have both been amazing mentors. In Argentina, the first time I went I stayed with the Zimmerman Family, and they were incredible. Sadly, Ines Zimmerman passed away a few years ago; she was an inspiration and hugely influential in pushing women’s polo forward in Argentina.

What lessons and advice have stuck with you the strongest?

Safety for one. My mentors always emphasized that I take safety seriously, and I’ve learned a ton when it comes to my horsemanship and riding. In terms of game strategy, the concept of always thinking multiple plays ahead and making decisions based on probabilities has really stuck with me.

Look for Lesley playing in the 12-goal with her Wild Polo team in February and March.

RA

COVETED

Eldorado’s Iconic Tournaments

Eldorado hosts a series of exciting, competitive tournaments throughout each winter season. Some of these events honor the lives and achievements of past members and players, while others commemorate war heroes and business magnates. For each coveted trophy, there is a unique polo history to explore.

Carlton & Keleen Beal Memorial Tournament

The Beal family polo legacy reaches from Texas to California. In celebration of their dedication to the sport, memorial events honoring Carlton and Keleen Beal are hosted at both Houston and Eldorado polo clubs.

The Beal husband-and-wife team dedicated much of their lives to polo. Carlton served as a governor of the USPA and was on the board of the Polo Training Foundation and the Polo Museum. An avid player, Carlton’s career highlights include winning the Monty Waterbury Cup in 1950, and the U.S. Open Polo Championship in 1952. For his many accomplishments, Carlton was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1992.

Carlton and Keleen’s daughter followed closely in their footsteps; Karlene Beal Garber was an active player and supporter of polo for decades. She continues to be dedicated to junior polo programs and the Polo Training Foundation, where she served on the board of directors and successfully continued the work started by her father. She joined Carlton in the Polo Hall of Fame in 2019, upon receiving the Philip Iglehart Award.

The Spreckels Cup

Named for John D. Spreckels, a sugar magnate, the Spreckels Cup is one of the oldest trophies on Eldorado’s roster. The tournament has a long history in California, originating at the Coronado Polo Club near San Diego. The stunning silver cup is two feet tall and was designed by Brock and Feagus of Los Angeles. It was first presented in 1909 to the winners of the Polo Challenge, and this inscription remains visible on the trophy today.

The Spreckels trophy went missing for several years but was rediscovered in the 1980s, and subsequently reinstated at the San Diego Polo Club in 1988. In 2016, it was relocated to Eldorado, where it remains one of the most prestigious trophies presented each season.

Fish Creek Tournament

The Fish Creek tournament is an annual event played at the 4-, 8- and 12-goal levels. It is the namesake of the longstanding Fish Creek polo team, who competed in highgoal polo at Eldorado for more than three decades. The team was founded and sponsored by Fred Mannix, who took to the sport in the early 80s.

Across his polo career, Fred was known as a sportsman, gentleman, and humanitarian. Since his retirement from the sport, he remains committed to both improving and preserving polo and is a strong proponent of training, instruction, and mentorship. Fred’s efforts and dedication earned him the polo community’s respect and recognition: he is the recipient of the Tommy Hitchcock Award twice, as well as the Hugh Dalmar Trophy, and the Philip Iglehart Award.

Passionate about passing knowledge onto the next generation of polo players, Fred is a strong supporter of junior polo, hosting annual Fish Creek junior tournaments at both the Calgary and Eldorado polo clubs. On the importance of junior polo, Fred comments, “One of my biggest contributions to the sport, with the support and encouragement of my wife Li-Anne, has been instilling the love of polo in our sons and in many other great up-and-coming players who represent, in my view, the future of polo in North America.” Fred and Li-Anne’s sons, Fred Jr. and Julian, have enjoyed great success in the sport: Fred Jr. is the highest-rated Canadian player and among the best in the world, and Julian won the prestigious U.S. Open in 2014.

Mack and Madelyn Jason Memorial Tournament

Madelyn Gilmore Jason’s father, Bill Gilmore, was instrumental in bringing polo to the desert. Seeing the potential to attract players from Los Angeles, Bill spearheaded the creation of winter leagues at the early rodeo grounds, the current site of the Palm Springs Airport. Later, Gilmore was among a group of influential players who purchased 40 acres adjacent to the Eldorado Country Club to be developed exclusively for polo. Bill’s enthusiasm for polo trickled down to generations of family members, including his daughter Madelyn and her husband Mack Jason, whose involvement at Eldorado dates back to the 1950s.

Polo was a passion that Mack and Madelyn shared for decades. Away from the field, Mack was active as president of the board at Eldorado, a co-founder of the Polo Training Foundation, and a chairman of the USPA membership and finance committees, where he was instrumental in helping Sue Sally Hale achieve membership status. Madelyn was equally

involved as a horsewoman and as an organizer of many charity and social events, including the popular Saturday night parties at Eldorado.

Mack and Madelyn’s daughter, Lyn Jason Cobb, remarks, “My parents were a major force and huge contributors to polo. I started the tournament to preserve their legacy and raise awareness for the organization my father was so involved in, the Polo Training Foundation, which the tournament still supports today.” Lyn and her daughter, Madelyn Cobb, remain active members of Eldorado and continue to support the Polo Training Foundation and their family tournament.

Rossmore Trophy & Skins Game

The Rossmore Trophy is named for British Cavalry Major Sir Nigel Rossmore. A talented and dedicated polo player, he was recognized for his service to his country after he was killed in action during a cavalry charge in WWI. The trophy keeps his memory and love for the sport of polo alive at Eldorado.

The Skins Game is the tournament final of the Rossmore Trophy, and the exciting culmination of the Eldorado season. The game format allows the team with the most goals in each chukker to win money, while also competing for the tournament win with the highest cumulative score. If a chukker is tied, the prize money carries over to the next chukker.

The tradition of the Skins Game was the brainchild of long-time Eldorado Manager Alex Jacoy. Recognizing the success of the Skins golf tournament held at PGA, Jacoy adapted the format to suit polo. The Skins Game has been a hit ever since!

George Conkwright Memorial Tournament

Eldorado Polo Club was like home for George Conkwright: he was a long-time polo player and club member. George grew up in Kentucky and later split his time between his house at Deer Creek in Thermal and his ranch in Kentucky, with his lovely wife Jana. Horses were always a passion for George—he took great interest in breeding, horseracing, horse training, and of course polo.

Long after he retired from playing, George remained a dedicated supporter of the sport: “Even when his health was failing, he was dedicated to watching polo at Eldorado. He understood and loved the game,” Jana remembers. In 2023, Jana founded the George Conkwright Memorial Tournament to celebrate George’s legacy. Every season, Jana is present to award prizes at the memorial event, and she also hosts a luncheon for family and friends in celebration of George’s life.

World Gym Tournament

The first World Gym tournament took place in the late 80s at the Ventura Polo Club. It was a family affair from the very start, founded by Mike and Claudia Uretz. In the early years, Mike Uretz was very involved in planning and executing the popular tournament. He helped select the unique globe trophy (with the help of Susan Stovall), he invited players to sign up, and he purchased gift bags for all participants.

Claudia and Mike tried their best to win the World Gym trophy, to no avail. Once their sons Wiley, Patrick, Tony, and Hank started playing competitively, the Uretz family name finally made it onto the trophy: “We were the perfect hosts, never winning our tournament until our boys came along! The year all the boys won, I even played against them, substituting for Kim Garsed on an opposing team.”

The Uretz family’s enthusiasm for polo and teamwork is represented by the World Gym trophy. Claudia describes their polo motto as: “There is nothing as fun as polo! Get out there and play, no matter who you play with, or what field you play on!” The World Gym tournament was created to celebrate good vibes, and anyone lucky enough to know the Uretz family knows that they represent just that.

THE HEALING DESERT HOT SPOT

The Coachella Valley and surrounding desert has a reputation for health and wellness that dates back several centuries. The healing power of hot mineral waters, accompanied by the region’s perpetually sunny climate and dry air, makes the desert, literally, a hot spot for healing. As southern California increasingly defines itself as a leader in the global wellness movement, the Coachella Valley is gaining notoriety as a hub for mind and body health and well-being.

A HISTORY OF HEALING

Geologists suggest that the desert valley’s healing spring water dates back 12,000 years, to the last ice age, making it older than the Pyramids of Giza. Both the valley’s largest city, Palm Springs, and the local tribe, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, derive their names from the legendary hot mineral spring. Originally known to the tribe as Séc-he, meaning the sound of boiling water, the name of the spring later changed to Agua Caliente.

Many settlers and visionaries cooperated with the Agua Caliente to harness the area’s potential as a wellness destination. In 1887, Welwood Murray constructed the Palm Springs Hotel as close as possible to the spring and marketed the water to his guests as a cure-all for illness. John McCallum followed suit: he believed that the healing waters and dry climate would cure his son’s respiratory ailments and committed himself to developing the valley into an amazing place to live, work, and heal.

In 1909, Nellie Coffman opened the Desert Inn and drew the attention of wealthy patients looking to heal their various ailments (including some of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 20s and 30s). Coffman believed that the desert climate and the healing waters were effective at treating the symptoms of asthma, tuberculosis, and arthritis.

WELLNESS TODAY

The historic hot spring continues to draw thousands of locals and visitors to the desert valley. The Spa at Séc-he, in downtown Palm Springs, is the site of the original Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring, and has become an international wellness destination since its opening in 2023. Complementing the natural spring, the Coachella Valley’s near-perpetual sunshine and healing dry air support an expanding wellness industry. From spas and health therapies, yoga and Pilates studios, to health-conscious cafes, the Coachella Valley offers a range of health and wellness opportunities.

TREATMENT CLINICS, SPAS & WELLNESS STUDIOS

Scientific and technological advances have led to the popularization of treatments such as cryotherapy, red light therapy, infrared sauna, Neveskin treatments, and more. Cryotherapy is the use of extreme cold to improve or treat the body. In only a matter of minutes, Cyro has been shown to alleviate pain, heal muscles, support weight loss, reduce inflammation, and promote mental health. Neveskin treatments use similar technology that is targeted to tone, lift, and massage different areas of the body including the face. It has been proven to increase circulation and oxygen and slow the signs of aging.

Infrared saunas use light to generate heat within the body which results in reduced pain, weight loss, and detoxification. These rays are said to penetrate deeper than traditional sauna heat offering more healing benefits to the body. Red-light therapy uses infrared light to reduce pain, optimize sleep, improve skin and eye health, promote collagen production and more.

PILATES & YOGA

Pilates is a low-impact exercise that strengthens muscles while improving flexibility and posture. Practiced with or without equipment, the focus of the exercises is slow precise movements aided by intentional breathing. The benefits of Pilates include improved balance, stability, muscular endurance, and mobility, especially when it comes to everyday tasks.

Originating in ancient India, yoga is a practice that combines physical postures, meditation techniques, and breathwork to build strength, improve flexibility, and promote mindfulness. Yoga has become extremely popular in the United States: studies suggest that one in seven American adults practice yoga.

RISING STARS

Eldorado is home to one of the largest and most successful junior polo programs in the nation. Throughout the season, juniors compete in four different levels, starting with the lead line group all the way up to the advanced level. A series of annual tournaments allows players to compete for prizes and awards, including the Fish Creek Tournament, the Jackson Hole Horse Emporium Tournament, World Gym Tournament, as well as National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) sanctioned events.

The scale and success of the Eldorado junior program can be credited to the unwavering support of the Polo Training Foundation. Established in 1967, the PTF was founded to support polo of all levels across the country. At Eldorado, PTF funding helps to cover the cost of instructors, umpires, facilitators, medical staff, and trophies for tournaments.

The PTF also offers a variety of national scholarships, annual awards, and international polo exchanges for youth players. Many junior players who have grown up in the Eldorado junior program have been lucky enough to benefit from these initiatives: Elise Pardue received the High School Player of the Year award as well as a generous PTF scholarship for college; and Ulysses Escapite and Faris Hanna were recently selected to represent the USA on a PTF international polo exchange in New Zealand.

ULYSSES ESCAPITE

Handicap: 0 | Age: 16

“The PTF makes it extremely accessible for anyone who wants to join polo or further their experiences in the sport. It allows you to grow tremendously in a positive way and connect with others in the polo community. When I applied to go to New Zealand with the PTF, I was asked to write a letter about why I believe I should be selected and my experiences in polo. This was a great chance for me to truly express my love for the sport and showcase my experience as a young player.

The time I spent in New Zealand was full of adventure and a bunch of fun with fast-paced polo. The PTF has supported my polo and led me to many great opportunities, from the training I have received from them since first joining the lead line kids polo league, to playing in the advanced junior league at Eldorado, to giving me the opportunity to play with a great group of kids my age across the world. The PTF really made it all possible for me!”

ELISE PARDUE

Handicap: 0 | Age: 19

“Growing up playing in the PTF junior polo program at the Eldorado Polo Club gave me an excellent foundation for my future as an athlete. The Eldorado youth program has given so many kids amazing starts to polo and its success has been emulated across the nation with numerous programs just like it continuing to form. The PTF truly does an excellent job to create programs that form smart, kind, and talented polo players. Not only does the PTF contribute greatly to the future of polo, but they also provide incredibly generous assistance to athletes who pursue higher education. I have been honored to receive the PTF Scholarship in past years to further my education and polo career at the University of California, Davis. In supporting athletes through all different phases of their development, I believe that the PTF is a leading institution for the future of polo.”

FARIS HANNA

Handicap: 0 | Age: 18

“When I came to Eldorado in 2022 to do my first PTF junior league, I was an arena player with only 3 years riding experience and a few lessons on the grass. The advanced juniors were coached by Pelon Escapite, which was amazing to me how such a high level player was volunteering his time to teach us. It was such an amazing learning opportunity that we made the 3 hour drive to the club every weekend, and after the league I would hang out with all the other kids. As a first generation player from a non-equestrian family, being in the PTF Junior Program at Eldorado has been life-changing for me in many ways. It has provided a bridge for me from arena to grass, and got me deeper into polo to where I now own my own string and rig. It has been a springboard for new opportunities, from subbing in higher leagues, to getting selected for the PTF USA team! But finally and most importantly to me, growing up in the PTF Junior Program, I have made friendships that I know will last my lifetime.”

But polo games also bring unexpected moments that only a true professional can anticipate and capture! Here we celebrate the broken mallets, flying horseshoes, unplanned dismounts, and more, from Eldorado Polo Club over the past few seasons.

AN ELDORADO ICON

ALEX JACOY

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Alex Jacoy on November 14th, 2024 at the age of 82. Alex was the heart and soul of Eldorado Polo Club during his more than 30-year tenure as club manager and continued to be a warm presence at the club after his retirement. He was always smiling and thrived under the pressure of managing players, guests, and staff at the polo club.

Under his command, with the help of polo manager Susan Stovall, the club flourished to become one of the largest polo clubs in the U.S. It was during this heyday that the club hosted the U.S. Open Polo Championship several times and attracted attention of international royalty with visits from Prince Charles, Duchess Sarah Ferguson, and the Princess of Brunei.

Alex was behind many of Eldorado’s most beloved traditions, from the construction of the original Cantina in 1981 to the creation of the annual Skins game. His vision led to the establishment of junior polo

programs that nurtured young talent into the high goal players of today. Jacoy was the desert valley’s strongest promoter: “There will always be polo in the Coachella Valley. There’ll always be an Eldorado.”

Alex had a love for the outdoors that defined much of his life. Hunting, fishing, polo, and golf were not just hobbies but happy places where he found joy, camaraderie, and peace. In the off season, he and his wife Susan spent summers in Ennis, Montana, where he thoroughly enjoyed his passion for the great outdoors.

Alex lived a life defined by love, faith, and a dedication to others. His vibrant spirit, infectious smile, and unwavering joy for life will forever be remembered by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Susan, nephews Alex and Casey Baker, and niece Angela Baker. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his family, and many close friends in the polo community.

AMBASSADOR OF POLO

GLEN HOLDEN

With great sadness, we mourn the passing of Glen Holden on April 18, 2024, at the age of 96. In 1979, Glen Holden joined a group of fellow polo players to become an owner of Eldorado Polo Club, where a field is named in his honor. His Gehache Polo Team played for 25 straight years in the Pacific Coast Open and many times in the U.S. Open, winning the Championship in 1993. Glen was the Pacific Coast Circuit Governor from 1976 to 1984 and served as a long-time trustee of the Santa Barbara Polo Club.

Alongside his close friend and teammate, Marcos Uranga, Holden helped found the Federation of International Polo (FIP), and subsequently served as President from 1997 to 2005. Glen was honored to be inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 2002. Following his retirement from the game, the Holdens remained regular supporters of Sunday polo at Eldorado, and Glen was always thrilled to see polo friends, old and new.

Holden was nominated as U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica by George H.W. Bush. He served from 1989-1993 and played a crucial role in driving U.S. policy in the Caribbean.

Glen is survived by his son, Glen Arthur Holden Jr., his daughter Geannie Holden Sheller and son-in-law Michael Sheller, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Gloria, predeceased him in 2019, as did his second daughter, Georgianne Holden Stone, and his first grandchild, Holden Richard Stone, in 2020. Glen will be remembered fondly by his polo family, at Eldorado and beyond, for his enduring enthusiasm and commitment to the sport.

GAME DAY GUIDE POLO

The object of the game is to move the polo ball through the goalposts to score. Polo teams change direction after each goal to equalize field and weather conditions. If you see a flag raised at the end of the field by the flag person, a goal was scored!

There are 4 players on a team, with jerseys numbered 1 through 4, which indicate their position. Player 1 is the most offensive player while player 4 is the most defensive. The player wearing number 3 is typically the captain and the best player on the team.

Players have handicaps ranging from -1 to +10. The higher a player’s handicap, the better the player. Many of the world’s top players hail from polo’s modern-day Mecca: Argentina.

Polo is a co-ed sport, though women-only tournaments are increasingly popular worldwide. Today, female players are the fastest-growing demographic of the United States Polo Association.

Ponies make all the difference! Players attribute 80% of their performance to their ponies. It’s often said that a bad player on a good horse can be a good player, while a good player on a bad horse can be a bad player.

The rules of polo are intended to ensure the safety of ponies and players. The essential concept is the “line of the ball,” a right-of-way established by the path of the traveling ball. Any infraction of the game rules is a foul and most often results in the umpires awarding a penalty shot.

There are two main defensive maneuvers in polo. Similar to a shoulder check in hockey, a ride-off (or bump) allows players to use their ponies to push an opposing player and pony off of the line of the ball. Players may also perform a hook using their mallet to interfere with another player’s swing.

A regulation polo field is equivalent to the size of nine football fields and is the largest playing field in organized sports. Fields measure 300 yards by 160 yards.

The divot stomp is a time-honored tradition whereby spectators may walk the field during the game’s halftime to help repair divots made during play.

Polo is a fast game! During play, the ball can reach speeds of 110 mph, while polo ponies can reach speeds of 35 mph.
