PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

W

elcome to the 57th season of polo at the Eldorado Polo Club!

Players, patrons, and spectators alike will benefit from a full complement of amateur through 12-Goal polo. Please join us every Sunday, January through March; our high-level polo promises to be competitive and exciting! Goldenvoice, as of last June, has become the new owner of the land on which Eldorado Polo Club operates. They are a great supporter and partner of Eldorado Polo Club and the relationship is advantageous for both entities. The sale, further maintenance and continuous improvement agreements between Goldenvoice and Eldorado will preserve a high level of polo at our club for a long time to come. My special thanks to Eldorado’s entire staff for their dedication, hard work, and allegiance. Without each of them, polo at our club would be unsustainable.

F

A MESSAGE FROM JAN HART

or 57 years, Eldorado has maintained a reputation as the desert’s premier polo destination and best player-centered club. We honor this tradition and invite you to join us for another excellent, competitive and inspiring polo season in 2014! In preparation for the season, Eldorado’s team have dedicated themselves to several upgrades, including aerating, deep-tining, sanding and aggravating all tournament and practice fields. The exercise track is in great shape, with an improved west feature that ensures that ponies and riders remain a safe distance from Madison Street. ROC’s Firehouse Grille brings their fresh homemade fare back to the Cantina and the Club House. Both facilities host a number of exciting social events throughout the season, and are available for private and corporate events.

The sport of polo is our passion at Eldorado, and your participation, thoughts, and suggestions will help us to strive to be all we can be. On behalf of everyone at the club, I wish you a healthy and happy 2014, and the best of luck in the upcoming polo season.

Taking the helm of our team is Polo Manager Graham Bray who brings years of experience to the club. Assistant Managers Rob Roenisch and Debbie Morrison round out the polo management team, ensuring that polo runs smoothly throughout the season. Our fields are in the knowledgeable hands of Field Foreman Miguel Ramos, and they are in superior shape for players and ponies. Darlene Molton returns as the club’s Accountant, and James a’Court serves as Marketing and Events Director for the season. Kyle Fargey returns as the Eldorado Polo & Riding Academy Director, offering over a decade of experience and a string of safe, reliable school horses for students of all levels!

MICHAEL C. WARD President of the Board of Directors Eldorado Polo Club

We are proud of our staff, our facilities and the great polo that is offered here thoughout the season. I would also like to extend a special thanks to the outgoing Lake Farms owners of the club, who have shown great dedication and generosity to secure a strong future for polo at Eldorado for years to come. See you at the field!

Why Choose Kim Kelly? •“Simply the best real estate agent I came across in my life and being a European I am just sad that Kim does not open an office in Paris. As she likes to say ‘like in Polo I am there to win’ and she wins. Highly recommendable person.” G.L., France, 2013

•“I have a vast history of buying and selling properties. I will never do another deal without Kim as my representative. She follows thru like no other Realtor, and

understands that her name is her word, and her word is gold! So hard to find!! So grateful she represented me in my sale, and in my purchase of my next home! Highly, highly recommend her... and I do not recommend people! Glad I do not play polo against her!! She is the definition of how I hire my pros - People I do not want to play against... And that I WANT ON MY TEAM!!” Thank you Kim! D.S., La Quinta, 2013

•“We read Kim’s resume on the internet and what triggered us was her slogan, which is: I do business the way I play polo, I am here to win. We contacted her and

we experienced from the beginning through the end a well-oiled process. She showed us “her” valley and advised us what areas would fit our wishes. She is a no nonsense agent, has a good sense of humor and she found what we were looking for. And to stay in Kim’s terminology: we were glad to be on her team. I can highly recommend her, she is a winner!” The Ashmans, Nicaragua & Palm Springs, 2013

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

POLO GLOSSARY ESSENTIAL TERMS The following are some basic definitions to help spectators understand and enjoy watching a polo game

APPEAL

HANDICAP

BOWL-IN

OVERTIME

CHUKKER

POLO BALL

FOUL

POLO FIELD

FLAGMAN

SPARE PONY

GOAL

THIRTY-SECOND BELL

A claim by a player that he or she was fouled, expressed by the raising of his or her mallet above the head.

When the umpire starts or resumes the match by rolling the ball in, down the center of a line-up of players. A bowl-in is also known as a throw-in.

Term used for the period of play in polo - seven and a half minutes long. There are six chukkers in a polo match.

The Umpire blows the whistle for infractions of rules governing play on the field. It is often blown for making a hazardous play or the improper use of the mallet. The umpire can award anything from a free goal to a free hit from a determined distance.

An unofficial goal observer appointed to wave a flag overhead if a goal is scored, or below the waist if no goal is scored.

Any time the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, regardless of who (including ponies) knocks it through, or at the height at which it passes.

Each playing member of the USPA (United States Polo Association) earns a handicap ranging from -2 (or C) to 10. The higher the handicap, the better the player.

Overtime is sometimes played when a tie is reached at the end of regulation play. A seventh chukker will resume, and is played as “sudden-death overtime.

A polo ball is made of hard plastic, measuring about 3.25 inches in diameter. Historically, polo balls were made of hard wood.

Polo is most often played outdoors on a grass field that measures 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. The sport is also played indoors in covered sand arenas and sometimes it is played on snow, with slightly larger, inflated balls.

Players have the option of using a spare or substitute horse during a chukker. Players can switch ponies on the sidelines of the field when they feel it is necessary.

The bell or horn heard thirty seconds before the end of the chukker. The end of the chukker is signaled by another bell or horn and an accompanying signal by the Umpires, which is known as the final whistle.

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

POLO RULES AND STRATEGY TOP 10

1 The “line of the ball is created once the polo ball is struck. The player who is closest to it, with the narrowest angle, has the right of way to approach the ball. The line of the ball acts as an imaginary buffer against collisions when two or more players approach the ball.

2 All players must play right-handed. The right hand is used for the mallet, and the left is used on the reins for steering and speed control.

3 Teams change goal-ends, or goal direction, after each goal is scored.

4 To start the game, the umpire bowls-in the ball by hand between the line-up of the two teams, at center field. After each goal, teams return to center for another bowl-in.

5 Each of the 4 players on a team wears a jersey with the number 1, 2, 3 or 4 on his or her back. Each number corresponds to their assigned position.

22

ELDORADOPOLOCLUB.COM

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

6 Every game is officiated by two mounted Umpires, and one Referee (or “Third Man”) on the field sidelines. These officials are responsible for enforcing the rules of play, and ensuring the safety of horses and players. If the mounted Umpires disagree on a call, they approach the Referee to make the ruling.

7 All players on the field are able to score goals.

8 Men and women are in direct competition in polo; they compete with each other and against each other. While men dominate the higher-levels of international polo, the fastest growing segment in the sport is women!

9 A player may “ride-off ” (or “bump”) his or her opponent in order to drive them off of the line of the ball. This defensive play is similar to a body check in hockey. The speed and angle of the bump must not pose any serious danger to the player or pony, or a penalty will be called.

10 A player can interfere with an opponent’s shot with a hook; which involves putting his or her mallet in the way of the striker’s swing. Penalties are called for hooking an opponent’s mallet too high in the air, or for reaching over or under another player’s horse.

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

POLO TEAM: PLAYER NUMBERS

#1

#2

The number 1 player assumes the most offensive position on the team, working in the zone closest to the team’s own goal. This player covers/marks the opposing teams’ number 4 player.

The number 2 player takes an important offensive and defensive role, by running through and scoring goals, or feeding the ball to the number 1 player. Defensively, this player covers the opposing team’s number 3 player.

#3

#4

The number 3 player is the tactical leader on the field who is often responsible for game strategy and field advantage. This player must be able to hit long shots to his number 1 and 2 players, as well as maintain a solid defensive position. The number 3 player is often the player on the team with the highest handicap rating.

The number 4 player is the primary defensive player, responsible for guarding the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring. This player allows the number 3 player to commit to more offensive plays, knowing he/she will be covered on defense if the ball changes possession.

Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

No hour of life is lost that is spent in the saddle.

After seeing kids play polo against big guys, it only shows that horses are the greatest equalizer in the world. No matter what you weigh, the little fellow is your equal on a horse. - Will Rogers

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

A PASSION FOR POLO AN INTERVIEW WITH PAUL VON GONTARD

P

aul von Gontard has a contagious passion for polo and for life. Having played polo across the U.S. as well as India, Nepal, Africa and beyond, PVG (as he is warmly known) has great stories and recollections to share. PVG was one of the early founders of Eldorado Polo Club, and his passion for polo is equaled by his great enthusiasm for family, friends, community, business, and flight. In 2014, he will receive the Iglehart Award from the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame for his contribution to polo locally, nationally and internationally. Here we have the honor to experience some of the energy that PVG brings to life, the sport, and the Eldorado Polo Club.

I hope everyone will experience the honor, character, and pleasure of polo as I have. And I hope that it continues to grow forever.

What does the sport of polo mean to you? My appreciation for the sport can be traced all the way to its beginnings. As you know, polo’s roots can be traced to Mongolia. Genghis Khan and his men fought with sabers, and they used them in a beautifully artistic way in battle. The same swing that they used with a saber is used to this day in the sport of polo. As polo stretched across the world to India, England and then to the U.S., it transitioned from a Cavalry exercise to the intelligent sport that it is today. I have a great appreciation for the players who spread the sport across the world. How did you get started in the game? We started to play “Country Polo” in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the 1950s. We mowed a hay field, invited friends and horses over, and handed out some broomsticks! We used big western saddles and wore cowboy hats—it was definitely wild cowboy polo. When the legendary player Tony Veen visited us, he told us that we needed to play “real polo.” But there was hesitation in our group towards English saddles 36

ELDORADOPOLOCLUB.COM

and white britches. Eventually we founded the Melody Ranch Club and invited the polo team from Sheridan over to play. Some would say that we “met our last stand” against the visiting Sheridan team, and that inspired us to take a more serious approach to the game—rules, horses, white britches and all! What was at the root of your love for the sport? There are so many important values of the sport. For me, family was the first thing. Both Melody Ranch and Eldorado grew as family clubs—sons and daughters played with and against their parents and relatives. Polo friends became an extended family, and tournaments included travel, fun parties, and spending time outdoors together. The other most important aspect of the game is sportsmanship. Polo is a true test of character, and sportsmanship is what keeps a club together. Both on and off the field, you must respect yourself, your fellow players, and the beautiful horses that you have the honor to play. What polo memories are most significant to you? The most memorable time in any parent’s polo career is the moment your own child passes you by on the field. My daughter Oatsy started riding horses when she was 2 years old. She grew up herding cattle and she was a natural horsewoman from a young age. By the time she hit her early teens, I was calling for passes from her! She had great ability and agility on the field, and she became one of the best female polo players in the world. Playing with her and watching her grow into the sport will remain my fondest memory of polo. How did your history with Eldorado begin? We started to travel down to the Palm Springs area in the 1950s, and met up with some friends who were crucial to the development of the sport: Carlton Beal, Billy Linfoot, Mack Jason, Willis Allen and Tony Veen. I bought in as a member, and when it came time to move away from our early club location, I remember traveling out to the current address of Eldorado and staring at sand dunes and tumbleweeds—the true desert. The club founders had faith and vision, however, and we stuck our heels in and planned the layout of the club, which still serves as one of the best clubs in North America to this day. What are your thoughts on Eldorado polo today and in the future, as the 57th season kicks off? This area of California has truly become a great polo center in the U.S. Goldenvoice is our new permanent partner in polo and music and it’s a great future for all of us. I hope that all the players at Eldorado continue to share their passion for the sport, and aspire to be the best sportsmen and sportswomen. It is a challenge not to get in your own way, both on the field and off. You must maintain an honorable perspective and always return to the qualities of sportsmanship in order to get the most out of this sport.

PEE-WEE POLO AN ELDORADO TRADITION

“There was a great group of instructors at Eldorado when I was growing up, and my father was very supportive and gave me some great ponies to play. I was extremely competitive and wanted to play against the big kids as soon as possible!” -Fred H. Mannix

P

ee-Wee Polo has a long history at the Eldorado Polo Club. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, high goal polo ruled the club, and many sponsors and players called Eldorado home for the California winter. What grew from the dedication of these polo-minded families is a legacy of Pee-Wee Polo that continues to this day.

TOP MIDDLE: Eldorado Pee-Wee Players in the late 1980s: Joe Wayne Barry, Daniel Roenisch, Dawson Ludwig, Jason Crowder, Lindsey Gonzales, Laura Linfoot and Matthew Gonzales. TOP RIGHT: Players line up for an exhibition game on field 1 in 1989, under the guidance of Joe Barry. 74

ELDORADOPOLOCLUB.COM

Pee-Wee Polo at Eldorado has always been a family-driven endeavor. An active player and parent at Eldorado, Corky Linfoot, sums up the energy that kicked off the early legacy of Pee-Wee Polo: “This was not a build-it- and-they-will-come event. The circumstances at Eldorado were that a multitude of high goal players and sponsors descended here by the early 90s, and they all had kids of about the same age. The kids were keen to play, they did not need encouragement. So the players rallied together and started the tradition of Pee-Wee Polo every Saturday and Sunday morning.” Pee-Wee players showed up on ponies borrowed from their parents: “the majority of kids could ride, and the ponies respected the slower speed of kid’s polo,” remembers Linfoot. Jason Crowder, a talented player in the program from a young age, remembers playing big, fast horses from his father Steve’s string: “I think I got bucked off a few times, but I remember always having a great time!” Alongside parents and families, the defining individuals behind the junior polo movement were Artie Cameron Sr., and Joe Barry. These players showed up every weekend and encouraged participation and enjoyment for all kids; their dedication to the Pee-Wee Polo movement defined its success. This legacy is celebrated to this day at Eldorado, by the Artie Cameron and Joe Barry Memorial Junior Polo tournaments. Janet and Rege Ludwig also played a pivotal role in organizing teams each weekend and fun tournaments and prizes over the course of each season.

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

For many of the kids who participated in the Pee-Wee program at Eldorado, polo became a lifestyle as well as a livelihood. The Where Are They Now? section on page 76, reveals that the legacy of polo entrenched in these youngsters at Eldorado served to define their polo careers. The 25-year legacy of Pee-Wee polo is going strong at Eldorado today. In last season’s Artie Cameron Sr. and Joe Barry Memorial tournaments, there were more than 40 keen Pee-Wee Polo participants. The safe, family-polo atmosphere ensures that kids learn the game while having fun! The Pee-Wee program continues every weekend during the polo season, at 8:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays. You can experience the excitement of Pee-Wee Polo from the patio of the Cantina, and maybe even meet the next generation of international-calibre players coming out of Eldorado Polo Club. ELDORADO POLO CLUB

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ELDORADO’S PEE-WEE POLO PROGRAM HAS LAUNCHED THE POLO CAREERS OF MANY PLAYERS IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD. HERE’S A GLIMPSE AT THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS:

Fred H. Mannix, Handicap: 8 Goals Fred is the highest-rated Canadian player, and one of the highest rated to come out of Eldorado. He regularly competes in Florida and Argentina; with his Alegria team, he recently became only the second Canadian player ever to qualify for the Argentine Open final–a huge accomplishment! Jason Crowder, Handicap: 6 Goals Jason has won a series of prestigious high goal polo tournaments and MVP honors at Eldorado and Santa Barbara Polo Clubs in California, and at the Grand Champions and International Polo Clubs in Florida. Jeff Hall, Handicap: 7 Goals Jeff is one of the highest rated American players. He has counted numerous victories in some of the most important polo tournaments around the world, most recently the 2012 International Polo Cup. He is also an ambassador for Piaget. Joe Wayne Barry, Handicap: 4 Goals The son of the great player Joe Barry, Joe Wayne has played overseas for team USA on four separate occasions. He currently plays at the Houston Polo Club during the spring and fall seasons and at the Saratoga Polo Club during the winter. Matthew Ladin, Handicap: 4 Goals Matthew’s polo career has taken him around the world, having played in England, Mexico, Australia, Argentina and China. He is one of just a few American players competing in snow polo. In 2012, he traveled to Tianjin, China for the Snow Polo World Cup. Carlitos Galindo, Handicap: 3 Goals Carlitos played high goal polo in Florida with the Jan Pamela team and regularly plays in Houston with the Orroyo Escondido team. Last year he returned home to Eldorado to play for Hanalei Bay. Nicolai Galindo, Handicap: 4 Goals The younger brother of Carlitos, Nicolai plays professionally for Wild Cat Polo in Sarasota, Florida and for the Cinco Canyon Ranch team in Houston.
