ELDORADO

WELCOME

ELDORADO POLO CLUB

The staff of Eldorado Polo Club (EPC) welcomes you to our 2020/2021 polo season. Eldorado has, since 1957, maintained a reputation as the desert’s premier polo destination. Significant field refurbishment has resulted in a premium playing surface for both horse and rider. The upgraded infrastructure of our facilities has resulted in a more pleasurable and safe experience for our members. The winter of 2020/2021 promises to be another exciting and competitive polo season. The season kicks off in December with the Linfoot Polo Clinic, pre-season tournaments and practices, and the Pacific Coast Circuit Women’s Challenge. Regular league play will commence in 2021, featuring some of the most competitive tournaments in the Western U.S.: the World Gym, USPA Officer’s Cup and USPA Mack & Madelyn Jason Memorial tournaments in January; the USPA Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup and USPA Fish Creek Constitution Cup in February; and the legendary USPA Spreckels, Rossmore Cup Skins and Pacific Coast Governor’s Cup tournaments in March. In addition to these competitive 4, 6, 8 and 12-Goal events, Eldorado will host 2-Goal, women’s, and junior league play. Eldorado’s commitment to polo is managed by a great team of dedicated staff: Diane Thacker, Controller; Debbie Morrison, Assistant Polo Manager; James a’Court, Marketing and Events Director; Miguel Ramos, Field Foreman; Mia Bray, Polo Coordinator; Andrea Salas, Marketing and Events Assistant; as well as many other talented support staff. Polo Pro Kyle Fargey invites players who are new to the sport to train in the Eldorado Polo & Riding Academy. Beginner through advanced students are welcome and no riding experience is required. The Cantina at Eldorado is open for the season (in a limited capacity as per COVID protocols), offering outdoor seating, take out service, friendly staff, and unparalleled views of Eldorado’s spectacular facilities. The Cantina is open Wednesday through Sunday from mid-October until the end of March. As we begin our 64th season, EPC would like to recognize our successful ongoing affiliation with Goldenvoice, the promoters of the Coachella and Stagecoach concerts. Our relationship with them is important and greatly appreciated. We also extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, advertisers, players, and guests for your continued support and loyalty. We are always open to receiving your feedback as we strive to make Eldorado all that it can be, and we wish everyone the very best polo season. Stay safe everyone! Sincerely,

Michael C. Ward President of the Board of Directors

ALMANAC BEST PLAYING PONIES OPEN ESFINGE Aptly named Open Esfinge (Sphinx), Ben Soleimani’s 12-year-old stately mare bears an impressive Ellerstina lineage, Cleopatra x Grappa Sportivo. Soleimani noticed the mare’s speed and stamina while playing in Argentina, and quickly added her to his polo operation. Since then, Esfinge has made her mark with the Soleimani organization across several continents. Her talent earned her a spot on Rodrigo Andrade’s short list in Soleimani’s 2017 Queen’s Cup victory at Guards Polo Club in England, playing alongside Tommy Beresford and Adolfo Cambiaso. Back in the U.S., Santi von Wernich and Iñaki Laprida relied heavily on her stamina during the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club 16-Goal tournament series in 2019 and 2020. Esfinge earned Best Playing Pony honors in the 12-Goal Spreckels Cup at Eldorado in March of 2020 under Gustavo (Tavi) Usandizaga: “She has all the qualities of a high goal horse. My favorite thing about her is her temperament on the field. When you ask for her sides, she shows you and she stands out from other horses. I think she might be faster on her sides than going forward!”

GARRAPIÑADA Meet Garrapiñada: an 8-year-old bay mare owned and played by Dan Walker. Dan purchased Garrapiñada four years ago in Argentina from Lucas Criado and she has since become a standout pony in the FMB string. She is known for her agility and speed in the game and according to Barn Manager Diego Cruz, she has a very soft mouth and is great fun to play. Garrapiñada won the Best Playing Pony Award in the Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup 8-goal in 2020. Dan describes the mare as a sweet animal who is also an incomparable athlete: “Garrapiñada is appreciated by every rider because of her ability to compete, her immediate speed, and her exceptional ability to turn quickly. I don’t believe any opponents have caught me on the field when I am running with the ball on her. Garrapiñada’s power to ride off and dominate other horses is also without question: losing a ride off does not happen.”

DIVA Diva is a 12-year-old grey thoroughbred mare owned and played by Ernie Ezcurra. Ernie purchased Diva in Indio from Trish Fitzgerald two years ago. According to Trish, Diva lived up to her name throughout her training: “Diva’s training was on her terms and I needed kid gloves. You couldn’t force her to do anything. Eventually her talent really came through and Ernie Ezcurra fell in love with her. They get so much done on the field – it’s fun to watch them together.” Diva won Best Playing Pony honors in the 2020 Spreckels Cup (2-Goal level) at Eldoardo, adding to a list of awards she received in 2019 at both Will Rogers (Dog Iron Polo Cup) and Santa Barbara (Last Chance Tournament). Ernie suggests that her greatest attributes are speed and acceleration, but what makes her an award winner is her fire and determination: “At the barn, Diva is shy and very sweet but when she steps onto the field, she transforms into a fierce competitor.”

UMPIRE’S UPDATE

L

ast polo season marked the first year in the history of the USPA Umpires, LLC that there were more official games umpired in California than in Florida over the course of the winter. This volume of games requires a dedicated group of umpires. Eldorado is fortunate to have the Western Regional Umpire Director Fergus Gould on-site throughout the polo season. Fergus reports that the Umpires LLC is making great headway in the areas of professional development and technological advancement. Umpires are forced to make hundreds of decisions over the course of each game, while also managing many personalities on the polo field. To help them navigate these challenges, Umpires LLC hired Rachelle Strawther of the University of Gonzaga School of Leadership as a consultant. Rachelle assists umpires in the areas of conflict resolution and emotional intelligence, preparing them for the demands of high-intensity polo.

Umpire development is also benefitting from involvement with the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO). One of Fergus’ advisors is Terry Gregson, who served as a National Hockey League referee for 25 years, as well as the director of officiating before his retirement. With many parallels between hockey and polo, Terry offers great insight into officiating a high-speed, highly competitive sport. Also for 2021, several respected international professionals are joining the desert roster: from Argentina, Martin Aguerre brings with him a long family history and deep knowledge of the sport; and from South Africa, respected umpire Steve Evans rounds out the field. Technological advances being spearheaded by the Umpires LLC include a pilot project offering field-side instant replay to referees of high-goal polo matches at Eldorado. With the help of a live feed, referees will be able to replay

any difficult or complicated calls and provide immediate feedback. There is also a new App in development to streamline the scheduling and reporting of umpires at large clubs such as Eldorado, furthering the professionalism of umpires, club management, and the overall polo experience into the future.

ANNUAL GROOM’S RACE

S

ince the late 1980s, an important tradition at Eldorado Polo Club has been the Annual Groom’s Race. In conjunction

with the Governor’s Cup and Skins Finals weekend, approximately 10 teams and over 100 members gather to celebrate the end of the season and the hard work of dozens of polo grooms. To start the race, one groom on each team must lead their pony (on foot) to the other end of the field. Then the team (consisting of 2 grooms) must get the pony in full tack, including tail braid and leg wraps. They must work as quickly as possible without making any mistakes. Finally, one team member must mount the pony and race back to the far end of the

field. The first team to ride their tacked horse across the finish line with all gear correctly in place wins the cash purse! In some of the most memorable groom’s races, the ponies provide the best entertainment: stopping to eat grass during the foot race, getting free and running back to their stable, or even catapulting their riders out of the saddle and over the finish line (no one was injured)! Along the sidelines, members cheer for their teams in support of all the hard work done by polo grooms over the course of each season.

PLAYER PROFILE CAROL FARNSWORTH, BEARSDEN POLO

C

arol Farnsworth took her first polo lesson at the Houston Polo Club in 2013. She credits her friend, long-time Eldorado player, Lynni Hutton, for encouraging her to try polo. Having competed in 4H, reining, horsemanship, and barrel racing in her youth, Carol took to the sport naturally and within two years she owned a string of four ponies. Carol currently competes in both Texas and California, and in 2020 she extended her polo horizons to Colorado and Oklahoma. Q: What do you love most about the sport of polo? A: First of all, I love the horses. Polo is such a natural sport for ponies to play. They are so responsive to the game – it seems to suit their character and instinct. My horses have helped me learn the game and they always take care of me. We have a great relationship of trust on the field. I also appreciate the people within the polo community. No matter where in the world you play, polo people are tremendously welcoming and supportive – more so than other equine disciplines. I understand now why people use the term polo family – I seem to have one at each club I play at! Q: What are some of the challenges of the game for you? A: At my level, the biggest challenge is anticipation. Reading the play that is about to happen is so important because the game moves very quickly. I am working to get my head more into the game, so I can improve my anticipation and keep up with better players on the field. I am also trying to improve the accuracy of my hitting. Q: Who is your favorite pony to play? A: I am crazy about all my ponies. Cody Woodfin has helped me invest in such a great string that it’s hard to choose one favorite over another. The ones that perhaps stand out most to me are Midnight, Payaso and Cash.

Midnight is a beautiful black mare out of the Owen Reinhart program, who I bought from Tiamo Hudspeth. Payaso and Cash are handy sorrel quarter horse geldings trained by Cody Woodfin. I have received best pony awards for each of them, which is a great honor. Q: What are the origins of your team name? A: Bearsden is a suburb northwest of Glasgow. My husband was in deep water exploration and while he was stationed in Scotland he fell in love with the quaint little town of Bearsden. When it came time to name my team and design a logo for jerseys, it seemed like a great opportunity to incorporate one of his favorite places with my new favorite pastime.

Carol and the Bearsden Polo Team will compete in the 4-Goal League at Eldorado this winter season.

YOGA APRÈS POLO

O

ver time, the physical demands of the sport of polo combined with the repetition of specific movements can lead to player injuries or stresses and strains. Yoga offers endless benefits to polo athletes, both on and off the field. In 2019, Megan Llambias founded Yoga Après Polo: a yoga practice tailored to the polo community. Some of yoga’s greatest benefits for players are improved range of motion, mental clarity, and strengthening of underused muscles. Breath awareness and increased core stability are also huge advantages that offer players greater stamina, more efficient performance, and faster recovery. Megan became passionate about yoga during her career as a semi-professional snowboard athlete. She tore a muscle in competition and elected not to have the recommended surgery. Instead, she started to practice yoga regularly and, as a result, she was back on the hill in under three months. Realizing the immense healing benefits of yoga, Megan has been devoted to the ancient practice ever since. Her current mission is: “To share my passion and knowledge of yoga to help create a healthier more compassionate community. Yoga offers us tools that allow us radically know ourselves and cultivate a healthy body and mind.” Many players have reaped the benefits of Yoga Après Polo, including 5-goal professional player Juan Monteverde who practiced with Megan during the 2020 Santa Barbara polo season: “I was having pain everywhere in my body, and my mind was racing. Yoga with Megan helped me become more focused, more present, and healthier in my mind and body.” Megan currently offers private sessions and weekly classes at Eldorado for both polo professionals and equine enthusiasts alike.

POLO’S EL DORADO: A HISTORY

T

The Museum of Polo notes that from India, polo spread quickly, appearing in England in 1869, Ireland in 1870, Argentina in 1872 and the United States in 1876. What became the governing body of polo in North America, the United States Polo Association, was originally founded in 1890 and by the early 20th century, polo was flourishing in America. The U.S. military joined the USPA and encouraged all cavalry units to take up the sport to improve their horsemanship. The first U.S. Open Polo Championship was played at the most influential polo club of the time: Meadowbrook Polo Club. Out West, financier and entrepreneur John D. Spreckels built an impressive polo facility (Coronado Polo Club) and hosted the most prestigious tournament in the western U.S., the Pacific Coast Open (PCO). Polo’s momentum was knocked off course by WWI, but players recommitted their energies to the sport in the 1920s. Tommy Hitchcock

he earliest accounts of polo date back 2,500 years to Central Asia. Mounted nomads played a version of polo that was part sport and part military training, with as many as 100 men per side. The game was formalized and quickly spread west to Constantinople, Tibet, China, and Japan. The “Sport of Kings” came by its name honestly. It was largely played by rulers, the nobility and military men, such as Darius, Genghis Khan, and Alexander the Great. The sport spread from old empires to new continents primarily by way of colonization and military rule. An early version of polo landed in India during the medieval times and eventually became the country’s national sport for over two centuries. By 1860, the modern or present-day version of the game was organized in Manipur, a northeastern state of India, and this version of the game transplanted around the world.

POLO

Jr., a 10-goal player by age 22, led a new generation of American polo players. Hollywood discovered polo around this same time. In 1926, Will Rogers built his own polo field in Pacific Palisades and regularly invited Hollywood notables out to enjoy the sport. Despite the draw of Hollywood to polo, the highest population of participants in the 1930s was military players. The Army remount service was involved in a nation-wide horse training and breeding program to meet the military’s growing demand for polo ponies. The sport was brought to a virtual standstill during WWII; however, dedicated patrons and players ensured polo’s revival, and post-war clubs and games grew steadily.

El Dorado: (Spanish) A land or mythical place of riches and wealth During the 1940s and 50s, five American players reached 10-Goal handicaps. With players such as Robert Skene and Tony Veen lighting up the polo circuit in the West, the time was ripe for a polo club in the California desert. Bill Gilmore brought polo players to the Field Club in Palm Springs during the 1940s, (located at Sunrise and Ramon Road), including Walt Disney, Buddy Rogers, and Spencer Tracy. The Gilmore and Jason families, along with Frank Bogart, then purchased the Thunderbird dude ranch and hosted polo, until it was transformed four years later into Thunderbird Country Club. From 1951, polo was played adjacent to Thunderbird at the Desert Air Hotel and Airport, where a portion of the grass runway was used as a polo field. By the late 1950s, the desert’s reputation as a getaway for stars, entrepreneurs, and adventurers was firmly established and alongside golf, polo came to rule the valley. Recognizing a great opportunity, a group of 11 polo players purchased land in the Palm Desert area in 1957 and founded the Eldorado Polo Club. This original Eldorado site was sold in 1979, and a new site was secured at the club’s present-day La Quinta location. Membership flourished at Eldorado in the 1980s and 90s. The club built a Cantina and a Clubhouse overlooking the main fields – just in time for some of the biggest events in the club’s history. In 1986, His Royal Highness Prince Charles played polo at Eldorado to a huge crowd of onlookers. Sarah, Duchess of York, and her father Major Ronald Ferguson visited in conjunction with Prince Charles, and the club welcomed record crowds to the royal weekend of polo and events. Eldorado also hosted the prestigious U.S. Open in 1987, 1992, and 1993; the only club in the American west to achieve such an honor.

Long-time Club Manager Alex Jacoy had an important role in the polo heyday at Eldorado: “We worked hard to take care of players and sponsors. And suddenly we had 42 teams in the Governor’s Cup, three U.S. Open Championships and a Prince coming to visit! It was amazing.” Jacoy attributes Eldorado’s enduring success to one distinction: “The Eldorado difference is that the club is run by polo players. This always put us over the top. And its true today with Graham Bray leading the charge.” From Persia to Palm Desert, polo has traveled the globe to become much more than a “Sport of Kings” at Eldorado. Today, the club hosts hundreds of men, women, and junior players in all levels of polo – from entry level chukkers to USPA 12-Goal tournaments, continuing to add breadth to its already rich past. §

IN FOND MEMORY

JESUS ELOY ESCAPITE | 1951 – 2020

W

e celebrate the life and legacy of Jesus Eloy Escapite, fondly known as Mamao (Mao) by his beloved grandchildren. Jesus was born in Jimenez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He had a passion for horses from the time he was young. He majored in Accounting, but outside of his profession, he always maintained a connection to horses and owned racehorses as a hobby. A good friend of his named David Alamillo invited Jesus to try a polo lesson at Las Anitas Polo Club in Ciudad, Juarez. Jesus was a semi-pro baseball player who loved sports; he took to polo naturally and was hooked almost immediately. Jesus played polo for around 5 years and achieved a 1 goal handicap. He took over the polo school at Las Anitas and encouraged many new players to participate. Jesus was renowned for his generosity as an instructor and polo pro – he would lend out horses and do whatever it took to get people involved. Jesus married Trinidad in 1978 and they shared a family together. Jesus was so proud of his four children: Manuel, Cindy, Pelon and Ulysses. Pelon and Ulysses and their cousin Cuko started polo at a young age. Pelon played alongside his father Jesus but

once Ulysses started playing, Jesus retired from playing and passed his horses down to Ulysses so that both boys had their own mounts. From that time forward, Jesus umpired games and supported his sons in their pursuit of polo. Both sons became professional players – Pelon was rated 6 goals and Ulysses was rated 4 goals by the time each of them reached the age of 25. Jesus was always working. He organized trips for polo players and always found ways to help his sons. Pelon and Ulysses always relied on their father’s wisdom and sound advice: “He seemed to always have the solution to any problem,” remembers Ulysses. Later in life, Jesus’ sole passion became his grandchildren: Elena, Vivi, Ulysses Jr., Ezekiel, and Eiza. He would do anything for them. Ulysses Jr., who regularly competes in the Eldorado junior polo program, always looked up to his grandfather, admired his knowledge, and appreciated his stories: “What I loved most about Mamao was his storytelling. You could ask him any question and he always had a great answer and a story to tell.” Jesus will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Bush League Polo, the Kyle and Robertson families, and the Eldorado polo community extend sincere condolences to the Escapite family.
