Polo first became a national sport in Persia— both women and men engaged in the game as early as the 5th century AD.

Most polo ponies are thoroughbred or part thoroughbred, between 5 and 20 years of age. Ponies are selected for their agility, speed, endurance and intelligence.

A

D

O

Each player holds a handicap between -2 (or C) and 10. The higher the handicap, the better the player. There are only 7 10-Goal rated players in the U.S.A.

O

R

Polo balls measure 3 to 3 ½ inches in diameter, and are made of hard plastic. Historically, polo balls were made of wood.

E

L

D

Polo pony manes are shaved and the ponies’ tails are braided to prevent becoming entangled with players' mallets or reins during the game.

A polo mallet is made of a flexible bamboo shaft and a hardwood head. The length of mallets ranges from 49 to 54 inches, depending on the height of the horse and player.

20

Outdoor polo is played on a field measuring 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. That’s nine football fields!

Players bring at least one pony per chukker to the game and also bring a few “spare” ponies in case one of their mounts gets fatigued. The spare pony is held at either end of the field, ready to play at a moment’s notice!

ELDORADO POLO

POLO FAQ WHAT’S A DIVOT STOMP? At half-time of the game, spectators are encouraged onto the field to replace the chunks of grass torn out by horses during play. This makes the grass surface more even and safe. Polo clubs often serve champagne or libations to encourage spectator participation. P.S. wear wedges or flats—heels are a no-no on the grass!

WHY WHITES? The tradition of white polo pants can be traced back to India, where the game was played in intense heat—players preferred clothing that was light in weight and color.

ARE ALL PLAYERS RIGHT-HANDED? Yes! Imagine left-handed and right-handed drivers trying to gain the right of way from opposite directions on a highway. The right-handed polo rule was made official in 1974—for safety’s sake!

CAN ANYONE TRY POLO? Definitely. The Eldorado Polo & Riding Academy teaches students aged 8 to 80. Learn the basics of the polo swing on a wooden horse in the hitting cage, then mount up on a safe, experienced polo horse to experience the game first-hand.

TEAM JERSEYS #1: THE CLOSER. The number 1 player assumes the most offensive position on the team, working in the zone closest to the team’s own goal. #2: THE WORKHORSE. The number 2 player is often the hardest offensive and defensive worker on the team: running and scoring goals and feeding the ball to the number 1 player, as well as covering the opposing teams’ number 3 player. #3: THE QUARTERBACK. The number 3 player is responsible for field advantage, game strategy, and moving the ball up the field. This is often the player on the team with the highest handicap rating. #4: THE BACK. Number 4 is the primary defensive player, who is responsible for guarding the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring.

O

RULES OF THE GAME: THE BASICS The rules of polo were created with the main objective of player and pony safety. There’s a lot to learn about the rules of the game. As soon as you understand the basics, you will start to enjoy all of the action on the field!

Every game is officiated by two mounted umpires, and one referee (or “Third Man”) who stands on the field sidelines. These officials are responsible for enforcing the rules of play. When you hear a whistle on the field, a foul has occurred in the game and a penalty will be given. If the mounted umpires disagree on a penalty, they approach the referee to make the ruling.

To start the game, the umpire bowls-in the ball by hand between the line-up of two teams at center field. The main objective is to then put the ball between the goal posts. If you see a flag raised at the end of the field, a goal was scored! All players on the field are able to score goals. After each goal, teams change goal ends and return to center for another bowl-in. In the event of a tie at the end of the game, an extra chukker is played as “sudden-death” overtime.

THE LINE OF THE BALL This is the most important rule on the field. An imaginary line is created every time the polo ball is struck. The player who is closest to it with the narrowest angle has the right of way to approach the ball.

PLAYERS AND HANDICAPS Men and women are in direct competition in polo; they compete with and against each other. Each player earns a handicap ranging from -2 Goals to 10 Goals. The higher the handicap, the better the player. Teams competing against each other have even aggregate handicap ratings.

22

A player may ride-off (or bump) his or her opponent in order to drive them off the line of the ball. This defensive play is similar to a body check in hockey. The speed and angle of the bump must not pose any serious danger to the player or pony, or a penalty will be called. A player can interfere with an opponent’s shot with a hook; which involves putting his or her mallet in the way of the striker’s swing. Penalties are called for hooking an opponent’s mallet too high in the air, or for reaching over another player’s horse.

A festival is defined as “a special time or event when people gather to celebrate a shared culture, featuring a program of events or entertainment with a specific focus.”

The City of Festivals is defined more succinctly: Indio. In many ways the Coachella Valley’s fastest growing city is also its cultural epicenter, boasting a vibrant music and arts community, a revitalized restaurant scene, picturesque surroundings and a flourishing youth population. That combination celebrates this unique community’s shared culture and bolsters the city’s reputation.

Make no mistake – Indio is the City of Festivals and has earned that reputation across the decades through the compilation of events taking place each year. Indio’s festival heritage dates back to the first Date Festival held in 1921 – nine years before the city was officially incorporated. Back then, dates were a relatively unknown, exotic fruit brought from Algiers. Since 1947, the annual Date Festival has been held in February on the Riverside County Fairgrounds. Over the years, it has evolved to include live music performances, the naming of Queen Scheherazade and her court, monster truck shows, carnival rides, rodeo events and more. Every April since 1999, the Coachella Music & Arts Festival moves into the polo grounds. It continues to grow in size and attract headliners from Paul McCartney to Jay-Z, as well as features world-class art installations and sculptures. Originally a two-day event, it is now a three-day experience than spans over two weekends and has become an Indio mainstay. Stagecoach, a country music festival and a sort of “cousin” to Coachella, emerged in 2007 and takes place the weekend after the Music & Arts Festival wraps. Also eventually growing to a three-day gathering, it is home to a national barbecue contest and has become the highest-grossing country festival in the world. Another signature Indio event is December’s International Tamale Festival, which holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest festival of its kind. Over 130,000 tamale lovers fill the streets of Old Town to sample every type of tamale imaginable. Other activities include a classic car show, folkloric dancing and a variety of live entertainment. It’s no wonder the Food Network named it one of the top-10 food festivals in the country. Through terrific partners, Indio continues to host a wide variety of popular events each year, including the Southwest Arts Festival, the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience and the Discover Indio Block Party. These celebrations increase tourism and put Indio on the world stage with a spotlight that gets bigger every year.

ELDORADO POLO

Remembering Dorrie In January of 2015, Eldorado Polo Club lost a dear friend. Dorrie Forstmann was a long time player, sponsor and supporter of Eldorado, and her presence is deeply missed.

Dorrie Forstmann (née Thomson) moved from England to the United States in 1954 with her mother, father and sister. In her early 20s, she became a well-known actress, starring in numerous shows including Operation Petticoat and Wonder Woman. Dorrie was introduced to polo in the 1980s, and it quickly became her passion. Playing at the L.A. Equestrian Center and Eldorado Polo Club in California, and in Jackson Hole,Wyoming, Dorrie was one of the top female players and patrons in the country with her team Risky Business. Dorrie was also a part of Piaget’s Chukkers for Charity polo team, along with fellow celebrities Bill Devane, Doug Sheehan, Alex Cord, Stefanie Powers and Pamela Sue Martin. The group raised millions of dollars for charities. In 2002, Dorrie suffered a catastrophic accident and was no longer able to walk. Her strength and willpower were an inspiration to all as she adjusted to her new life. Dorrie continued to love polo from the sidelines; she could often be found enjoying Sunday polo from the Eldorado Clubhouse. Love to you forever Dorrie. xo Your Polo Family

Dorrie was a truly amazing lady. When I first met her— wow! I thought: what a blonde bombshell! But there was so much more to Dorrie. Even when she got hurt, she was always the same—she was friendly, always enjoyed people and was upbeat. We played together the first year she was in the desert and won—it was three ladies and Joe Henderson on the team. It was a very special year, together we replayed the memories a lot. I still have my Risky Business Jacket... ~Susan Stovall Lovely Dorrie. She was always a great teammate, and no one looked better in their whites than she did. ~Bill Devane Dorrie, she was the queen of hearts. She found polo in 1982 and by 1985 she was one of the top 1 Goal rated players in the U.S. Her Risky Business team was at the top level in any tournament they played. No matter how tough things got, Dorrie had joy in her heart and she had love to share with everyone. Dorrie is truly missed. ~Craig Ramsby Dorrie was full of life. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. ~ Joe Henderson Since I was a teenager, Dorrie was a big part of my life. I had the pleasure of playing on her team, working with her horses, and spending 25 summers with her in Jackson Hole. She was always warm and welcoming to everyone and she had such a positive attitude. POLO INSIDER PREPARING A PONY TO WIN The best polo ponies win polo games. They try their hardest to run fast, stop even faster, turn very quickly, and know where the ball is at all times. Consider the duration of a typical horse race: about 90 seconds. Now consider how long one chukker of a polo game lasts: 7 and ½ minutes! Polo ponies are amazing equine athletes and their game day performance is the culmination of endless hours of conditioning, care, training, and preparation by polo grooms and professional players. Here’s a behindthe-scenes look at some of the work that happens in the weeks leading up to the amazing pony performances we witness throughout the polo season.

ELDORADO POLO

CONDITIONING Polo ponies usually play two tournament games and one practice game a week during the polo season. In order to avoid strain and injury, polo conditioning commences four to six weeks prior to the tournament season. Polo stamina and strength conditioning begin with exercising ponies twice daily on sets. A polo groom or player completes a set by riding one pony and leading three or four others in a group. The exercise track at Eldorado Polo Club is more than 1 mile long, and most ponies complete 2–3 laps of the track in the mornings and afternoons. By exercising the ponies together on sets, grooms and players have enough time to exercise 8–10 ponies twice daily. Once ponies have gained decent conditioning on sets, they commence stick and ball practice. This field-based training involves riding each pony individually while practicing the moves and skills required in polo games. At least once a week, each pony will participate in a 15–20 minute-long stick and ball session. In the weeks immediately leading up to tournament games, players will then take their ponies in practice games, where they fine-tune their mounts for tournaments, determine their pony order, and practice team strategy.

PONY CARE In addition to exercise, a significant amount of ground work and handling are involved in polo. Most ponies eat three meals a day and, because they have small stomachs and very long intestinal tracts, they require 1–2 hours after a feeding before strenuous exercise. The ponies you see playing in 10 am weekend games usually had breakfast before 6 am that morning! Ponies are fed hay and a mixture of grain and supplements, depending on their dietary needs and performance requirements. Hours of hard work are also involved in each pony’s care and turnout, which is to say their physical well-being and appearance. Ponies are groomed and bathed daily. Their coats are clipped to ensure that they do not overheat during exercise, and their manes and tails are trimmed so that they do not get tangled with equipment or other ponies during games.

ELDORADO POLO

GAME DAY

POST-GAME PONY CARE

Before a game, polo grooms clean and double check all of the tack and equipment used by ponies and players. On game day, a polo string may go for a light morning workout if they have an afternoon game, but the bulk of pre-game prep usually involves resting and organizing for the main event!

Great care goes into ensuring that ponies are comfortable after each game. They are cooled down, showered, and their legs are often wrapped with supportive bandages for the evening.

Ponies arrive at the field at least an hour before the game begins. Each pony’s legs are then dressed in polo wraps— soft bandages that support their tendons and protect their legs during the game. A high-goal player will bring as many as eight ponies to a tournament game: that’s 32 legs to wrap before the game begins! Further leg protection is provided by tendon boots—more rigid leg protectors that are secured by a series of Velcro straps. Each pony is then saddled and bridled according to an order of play. The player determines this order before the game, depending on pony preference and broader team dynamics. Polo grooms are experts at tacking and untacking ponies in short-order, and they understand how the equipment must be tailored to each pony in their string. Once the game begins, there is as much adrenaline at the team trailer as there is on the field. Polo grooms work very hard to see the ponies perform their best on game day.

After a weekend of tournament polo, most ponies have a rest day or a day of very light exercise. At the end of the polo season, most polo ponies are given a restful vacation in large pastures. High performance polo ponies are at their best when a regular schedule of exercise, feeding, and rest is maintained. These well cared-for equine athletes enjoy the game (and the win!) as much, if not more, than players or spectators. After all, the game of polo was created with the mentality, talents, and athleticism of these magnificent creatures in mind.

BEST PLAYING PONIES WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WIN THE BEST PLAYING PONY PRIZE? MEET A FEW OF THE PONIES AND PLAYERS FROM 2015: Best Playing Pony: Fantasma 2015 Governor’s Cup Final Owner: Cotterel Polo Farms “The best playing ponies like Fantasma have huge hearts, love the game, and are so competitive they want to win every play.” Best Playing Pony: Happy 2015 January 6-Goal Final Owner: Jared Sheldon “A best playing pony is a culmination of a lot of hard work. Between the groom at

the barn and the player on the field everything has to come together for a horse to stand above the rest.” Best Playing Pony: Marley World Gym Tournament Final Owner: Jennifer Alexy “Each best playing pony has so much heart and tries so hard every time they step on the field. Marley is a fast learner and she inherited a ton of heart from her mom, Xena. She gets better in every game.”

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Where to Stay

Cabo San Lucas is not what it used to be. This ideal spot at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula started as a quaint fishing village bordering the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez. After John Steinbeck wrote about his love for the region, Hollywood stars like John Wayne and Bing Crosby became fishing frequents, and an unexpected level of fame followed.

There is only one place to stay in Cabo: One&Only Palmilla. After receiving an $80 million makeover, the historic Palmilla property re-opened as an exclusive One&Only resort. One&Only Palmilla welcomes guests back to a resort that is better than ever with completely refurbished guest rooms and suites, new adult outdoor lounging areas with panoramic ocean views, and a new spa and fitness center. Guests also enjoy the best cuisine, golf, and yachting that Cabo offers, and families appreciate loads of kids’ activities and time at the unforgettable beaches of the Baja.

Visit Cabo today, and you are likely to catch a glimpse of George Clooney or Jennifer Aniston. A serious real estate and tourism boom hit during the 1980s, and the region now offers everything from golfing, diving, luxury resorts and highend nightclubs, to an international film festival and numerous polo competitions.

Life is Short, so have ALL the fun you can dream UP! Human pyramids… Drive small firetrucks… Dance all night… Prank a friend’s truck

But before the dreams end, get a funeral plan.

Play fast polo… Hit lemons with hammers… Leg wrestle everyone on earth… Ride off into the sunset

Crazy friends… Road trips… fly over big jumps… Travel to Palermo

Wear superhero costumes… Win tournaments… shoot stuff… Keep dreaming…
