spectators to the 2021/2022 polo season as we celebrate Eldorado’s past and present as the desert’s premier polo destination. This winter promises to be another exciting and competitive polo season. In light of the recent news that the Empire Polo Club will not be hosting polo this season, we have fielded many concerns from players and the public. Eldorado will continue to host polo across all levels, and our team is working hard to accommodate as many teams, players, members and spectators as possible this winter. T
wo-time winner of the U.S. Arena Polo Championships, Jared Sheldon is a dedicated polo professional with years of experience playing, coaching, and captaining both grass and arena polo teams. He, his wife Dani, and their young family live and breathe all things polo—a passion handed down from his grandfather Russ Sheldon, who worked tirelessly to build the sport across the country. Jared’s new book Arena Polo Strategies is an incredibly valuable tool for any player looking to up their game, using actionable advice and strategy developed from generations of experience. Designed in part to assist in training an interscholastic team for a national tournament, this playbook captures the ins and outs of a successfully executed arena polo strategy. Sheldon admits that his insights push the boundaries of the game, but all are invaluable strategies used in his own hard-won tournaments and titles. Written in precise detail, with visual aids and even advice for how to adjust when a game is going wrong, Arena Polo Strategies will serve as the go-to guidebook for players, coaches and anyone with a passion for arena polo. Another polo player, Kareem Rosser, recently published an unforgettable memoir that is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring. Rosser’s Crossing the Line is the remarkable true story of three young brothers who accidentally discover the Work to Ride stables in the middle of the high-crime, low-income neighborhood of West Philadelphia. The program, designed to give inner city kids a chance to escape their surroundings by connecting them with horses and polo, quickly became the center of the boys’ lives. Rosser’s memoir details the impossible odds he overcame, from devastating family addictions and local gang violence to later becoming captain of the first all-Black national interscholastic polo championship team. Connecting with horses (and one polo pony in particular) stopped his panic attacks, taught him resounding discipline and determination, gave him new dreams to strive for, and changed the course of his future. Kareem’s unending honesty and vulnerability throughout Crossing the Line gives readers a front-row seat to a groundbreaking story in polo and sports history. This book will speak to equestrians and non-equestrians alike, where fate meets passion, determination, and a ton of heart.

THE DIVOT STOMP: A POLO TRADITION
O
ne of the oldest and most beloved traditions of polo is the halftime divot stomp. Spectators are offered a glass of champagne and invited onto the pitch to help replace the pieces of grass and earth moved by the horses’ hooves during the game (called divots). After intense play, the impeccable grass is torn up! The divot stomp is an exciting way for spectators to engage with the sport, appreciate just how big the field is, and of course to take some great photos in their Sunday best. It’s also a crucial part of improving the playing conditions for the players and ponies: by taking part in this age-old tradition, you’re helping to make the field smoother, which allows the ball to travel further and more accurately. So, grab your glass of bubbly, march out onto the field and help your favorite team take home a win!
PLAYER PROFILE TOM SPRUNG, EVERGREEN POLO
A
round 16 years ago, Tom Sprung attended a fundraising event featuring an afternoon polo match. He went home that day with a new fascination for the sport, and a raffle prize for beginner lessons at the Denver Polo Club. Sprung had ridden casually before attending his first lesson, but he didn’t classify himself as a horseman of any kind (and he still doesn’t). He was instantly hooked on polo and has since dedicated himself to improving his riding and polo skills and competing regularly in Colorado and California. Last season saw Sprung and his Evergreen Polo Team win the ultimate trophy: the USPA Pacific Coast Circuit Governor’s Cup at Eldorado, a win that he and his teammates will never forget. Q: What are the origins of your team name Evergreen? A: Evergreen is the name of the town in Colorado where my wife Cyndi and I live. I transplanted to Colorado from New York in 1972 for college, and then never left! I run a construction business, however I felt that Evergreen was a better team name than Sprung Construction.
Q: What do you love most about the sport of polo? A: Polo seems to be the only time I can get away from my cell phone for a few hours! When I’m on the polo field, it’s a total escape from my business responsibilities. The sport is challenging on so many levels, so there is never a dull moment. I also love the horses, although I am still figuring out how to ride them properly. Q: Do you have a favorite pony to play? A: My favorite pony seems to change every week, or every game. Prim, my Buckskin, is the pony I know best and am most comfortable on. I always play her in the first chukker to get me into the game. But the other ponies in my string are equally great, I just don’t know them quite as well yet. The Galindo family has helped me invest in a really great string of ponies, and it has improved my game and enjoyment of the game a lot. Q: How do you spend your time away from the polo field? A: When I’m not on the polo field, I am mostly working so I can pay for my time on the polo field! Work and polo are about all that I do. My wife will back me up on this.
Look for Tom Sprung and the Evergreen Polo Team in the 8-Goal League at Eldorado this winter season.
THE CANTINA AT ELDORADO
T
he Cantina at Eldorado is one of the desert valley’s hidden gems, says new General Manager Frankie Arrieta. This marks Frankie’s first season with the iconic fieldside Cantina, but it’s certainly not his first rodeo (or polo match!). He brings with him over 15 years of restaurant management experience, as well as a passion for top-level service. Embracing the venue’s connection to the desert’s thriving live music scene, The Cantina offers karaoke every Thursday evening and live entertainment, ranging from acoustic sets to high energy DJs, on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season. Frankie also plans to expand the brunch menu (think mimosa flights and other fun additions) to further enhance the Sunday Polo experience. This season, The Cantina is truly a destination not to be missed. Grab a table on the sunny patio overlooking the polo fields, order a delicious craft cocktail, and let the games begin!

KAHUNA
DOBEL
Kahuna comes by his name honestly: he is one of the most statuesque polo ponies in the desert, and somewhat of a local celebrity. The 14-yearold homebred gelding was trained by Carlitos and Meghan Galindo of Thermal and bred by Carlitos’ father, legendary horseman Carlos Galindo: “Kahuna is out of our best broodmare of all time, Vegas, and his sire is one of our old playing stallions, San Diego. At 16.2 hands he is naturally very fast, but also really handy.” Kahuna has traveled across the U.S. to compete in tournaments in Kentucky, South Carolina, Wyoming, Colorado, and his home state of California. “I usually play Kahuna in the fifth chukker. Considering how big and fast he is, he has an amazing mouth,” admits Carlitos. Kahuna’s presence and talent have earned him Best Playing Pony honors in a series of tournaments: the Governor’s Cup in Denver; the Lion’s Cup, USPA Sportsmanship Cup, and George S. Patton Jr. Tournament at Empire Polo; and most recently, the Fish Creek Constitution Cup at Eldorado.
Dobel is an unforgettable 8-year-old grey mare owned and played by Alejandro Gonzalez. Gonzalez found Dobel in Mexico through Rodrigo Anaya. Even as a 3-year-old, Gonzalez could tell that the mare was special: “She has unbelievable balance – I noticed this the first time I rode her.” After a few years of training, Dobel continues to improve with every game. “Dobel has a complete package of skills and is so fun to play. I don’t need to think about how to ride her. She is just there with me every second of the chukker.” Only 8 years of age, Dobel has already won numerous pony awards in 8-12 Goal leagues at the Houston, Eldorado and Santa Barbara polo clubs. Away from the field, Dobel’s personality makes her even more memorable. She is sweet and smart with the feistiness and edge of a top mare; she is the boss of the barn, making her presence known at all times. Look for Dobel in the 8-Goal League at Eldorado in 2022; Gonzalez likes to play her in the sixth chukker of his tournament games.

BAYA Meet Baya: a 15-year-old Argentina mare owned and played by Grant Palmer. Baya hails from Argentina, where she was bred and trained by Alejandro Roldan. She moved to the U.S. in 2013 and has been with Palmer ever since. Palmer and Baya have competed together in tournaments ranging from the 4 Goal at Eldorado to the 16 Goal in Santa Barbara. No matter what level she plays, Baya always tries her best and plays with all of her heart, reports Palmer. Baya loves to play polo and be around people, but when it comes to other ponies, she enjoys her personal space! In 2021, Baya received the Best Playing Pony Award in the USPA Coachella Valley Officer’s Cup. It was a memorable day for Palmer, winning the tournament alongside of some of his best friends and taking home the pony prize: “I was really happy to see Baya with the winning blanket after such a long career.”
ldorado is known for its world-class polo fields. And although the winter season only puts the grass fields to work for four months, creating the perfect polo field is a year-round affair. There are two primary types of grass at Eldorado: Bermuda and Rye. Each fall, Field Manager Miguel Ramos and his team scalp the summer-friendly Bermuda grass from the polo fields and plant Rye grass for the winter growing season. Once the fields are in play, Ramos relies on the help of deep-tining aeration to maintain the condition of the fields. The tines can reach from 3 to 11 inches into the ground, creating cylindrical holes that water can better penetrate. Of course, the most important part of field maintenance in the desert is water! Eldorado’s team of field experts rotate a dozen large water cannons around the club’s 10 fields throughout the winter season. There’s a lot more to perfect polo fields than meets the eye. “There’s a science behind the agricultural practices we use to at Eldorado. There is a lot to know about soil, seeding, fertilizer, and everything that goes into maintaining a perfect polo surface. You have to know all the tricks and work hard to get it just right,” reports Ramos.

REPRESENTING THE WEST
T
his past September, Eldorado was represented by three talented junior players in the National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) Championships hosted at the iconic Oak Brook Polo Club. The annual Championships invite the best young polo players to compete with (and against) their peers from across the U.S. and Canada. Riley Jordan, Piers Bossom and Quinn Kyle were selected to the western regional team to compete for the title, both an honor and a challenge for the young Californians. All three young men began their polo careers under the age of 10 years old, progressing through the ranks of the Eldorado junior program from lead line up to the advanced (NYTS) level. Piers and Quinn remember starting on horseback around six years old and amazingly, Riley started at just two years of age. All three also share another common bond: polo playing parents! Riley, Piers and Quinn have been around polo since the very beginning, watching their parents in the sport and benefiting greatly from having skilled mentors right at home. When asked who they look to for advice on and off the field, Riley spoke highly of parents Mike and Cybele Jordan who have supported him throughout his young career. Piers credits his father Andrew Bossom for always helping him get to the next level of play. Their NYTS team coach, Ulysses Escapite, played a big role in their mentorship during the tournament, and Quinn also credits Escapite with
his progess in the sport over the last several years: “Ulysses taught me everything about the game, and I couldn’t be where I am currently without his coaching.” During the tournament, Piers and Riley rented ponies while Quinn was able to travel with and play his own. Piers felt confident in his string from Toto Obregon, and Riley was thrilled with the ponies he played: “I can honestly say I’ve never been so happy with a full string of rentals.” One of the goals of the NYTS program is to unite young, skilled players from around the country, and all three Eldorado players experienced this sense of community at the tournament. Piers loved seeing friends he hasn’t been able to visit with in over three years, and Riley was excited to expand his polo network within the NYTS community. Meeting other players in his age category from new clubs was Quinn’s favorite aspect of the tournament: “Forming new friendships and bonds is important, and NYTS is a perfect way to do so,” Quinn shared. Following the incredible opportunity to compete on the national scale, the three young men look forward to continuing to build on their skills and improve their personal handicaps. Piers, Riley and Quinn all have promising polo careers ahead of them—Eldorado is proud to be their home club and support them along the way! L to R: Riley Jordan, Piers Bossom, Quinn Kyle. rowing up on the polo fields of Eldorado Polo Club, San Diego Polo Club and
Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, professional player Jesse Bray had the number 7 cemented in his head from a young age. His father Graham, an accomplished professional player and the current polo manager of Eldorado, reached a 7-goal handicap at the peak of his playing career, and Jesse knew he also wanted to reach that milestone. Highlighted by the familial aspect of the sport, the age-old adage “like father like son” is a road map for many young professional players.

2021: THE ULTIMATE SEASON
THE CHERRY ON TOP
Every professional athlete dreams of the perfect season. For Bray, that dream was realized in 2021 after a year and a half of wading through the new normal of the unexpected pandemic. Beginning at Eldorado in January, Bray played the 8-Goal and 12-Goal tournament series. His 8-goal team, JC Polo/Folded Hills, were well mounted and excelled at fast-paced competitive games, reaching two finals and a semi-final. The Eldorado 12-Goal league presented a new challenge for the Sapa Polo team captained by Bray. After falling short in the February tournament, the team doubled down on their efforts for the coveted Rossmore Cup Skins tournament. Sapa Polo arrived to the final, winning in fantastic style against BenSoleimani.com, and Bray’s thoroughbred mare, iKnow, was awarded Best Playing Pony. Bray arrived to the Santa Barbara 12-Goal season with long-time teammates Justin Klentner, Jake Klentner and Patrick Uretz, ready to continue the winning streak. After spending time playing with the trio, the team chemistry was evident on and off the field. Similar to the Eldorado season, the team began slow but hit their stride right with a win in the signature 12-Goal tournament, the USPA Intra-Circuit. “Patrick Uretz was the best man in my wedding in October and now my teammate. We have been playing together since we were little kids,” said Bray. “I hope to win a few more with him!” The 16-Goal season then rolled around and Klentner Ranch kicked off with a win in the Robert Skene tournament. Having won both the Skene trophy and the Pacific Coast Open in previous seasons, the team of Justin Klentner, Jesse Bray, Jake Klentner and Santi Toccalino then jumped headfirst into the prestigious USPA Silver Cup tournament—the one trophy missing from the team’s cabinet. “Santi Toccalino really pushed us to focus on one game at a time. Just win the one in front of you. We really came together as a team and pushed through the season with this mentality,” admits Bray. Klentner Ranch continued their winning streak and achieved their season goal: winning the 2021 USPA Silver Cup.
Still undefeated, Jesse then looked to the next tournament, the Pacific Coast Open. The intense schedule at Santa Barbara Polo Club makes it very difficult for teams to win all three high-goal tournaments. Yet Klentner Ranch faced the challenge head on and emerged once again as the victors. “It was a fairytale season,” reflects Bray. “You never start a season thinking you won’t lose a game. I mean, of course you want to, but everyone has good days and bad days. We had a few close games but we really tried to keep our focus on the next play and then the next game and not look too far ahead.” It was Bray’s third Pacific Coast Open title, and the ultimate cherry on top of an already unforgettable year.

HORSEPOWER & HANDICAP GOALS In October of 2021, Bray received the news he had dreamed of since childhood: that his handicap was being raised to 7, effective spring of 2022. Toby Wayman, commentator for Global Polo, nicknamed Bray “All Day Jesse Bray,” and the moniker stuck. Bray spends all day in the barn amongst his faithful string, week in and week out. Bray credits his success to his horses and his family’s support in helping develop young horses to join his playing string. “Many people think being named Most Valuable Player is the best award, but for me, getting Best Playing Pony in a tournament is always the highest compliment. These horses got me here. I could not have done it without them.” In 2021, Bray received five best playing pony awards, including the USPA Silver Cup and Pacific Coast Open. Bray and his father have a small breeding operation with hopes of adding to Jesse’s tournament string in the near future. Bray’s 7-goal achievement comes at the end of a dream season, and the milestone is a reflection of years of hard work and the support of many family, friends and four-legged partners along the way. Bray will be playing in Wellington this winter but wishes the Eldorado Polo Club a fantastic season and future ahead.

Celebrating 65 Years A group of 11 polo players invested in a 38acre parcel of land for the original Eldorado Polo Club in Indian Wells. They purchased the land for $500 an acre and each owner contributed $5,000 towards building the club.
Eldorado Polo Club became a member club of the United States Polo Association, and William Tevis became the club’s first delegate.
1957 Lisle Nixon served as Eldorado’s Polo Manager.

“…the Desert Area is well on the way to becoming the Polo capital of the world.” –Frank Robert, Desert Sun, February 1958
1959 Tony Veen became the manager of the Eldorado Polo Club. Veen was a respected 4-Goal handicap player and many players affectionately referred to him as ‘Uncle Tony.’
Carlton Beal and Keleen Beal matched the money put up by a large group of donors towards the construction of a Clubhouse adjacent to field 1.
Alex Jacoy became the assistant manager to Tony Veen for 2 seasons before becoming Manager of Eldorado, and within a few years, polo flourished in the desert. The original club land in Indian Wells became very valuable and was sold to country club developers.
“When I became manager, the original club was located off of Cook Street and Hwy 111. The land later became home to one of the most prestigious country clubs in the desert...” –Alex Jacoy After the sale of the original club land, a new group of owners joined the original investors to purchase 180 acres in La Quinta. The new group of owners became known as Lake Farms.

Alex Jacoy organized the building of the original Cantina at its present-day location on field 4. The Cantina became a place that brought polo people together – players, grooms, spectators, and fans.

“The Eldorado difference was that the club was run by polo players. We understood and took great care of our players’ needs. From grooms to ponies to babysitters, we were there to answer the call. This put us over the top.”
Carlton and Keleen Beal donated a scoreboard for the north end of field 1; one of just two electronic scoreboards in polo at the time.
The club hosted the U.S. Open for the first time. Rain fell just before the Open final, and it was almost canceled until Alex Jacoy hired a helicopter to fly low over the field to dry it out. The Aloha team of Bob Fell, Memo and Carlos Gracida, and Warren Scherer secured the win.

LAKE FARMS
Throughout the 90s, the club hosted many charity games including the Barbara Sinatra Skins Polo Game, which raised money for her center for abused and neglected children. Many stars supported the event, including Frank Sinatra, Merv Griffin, Jerry Vale, Stefanie Powers, William Devane, and Jill St. John.
1990
Eldorado hosted the U.S. Open for the second time with the Hanalei Bay team of Julio Arellano, Carlos and Memo Gracida, and Ron Bonaguidi clinching the trophy.
1992
When Eldorado Polo Club moved from its original location to its current location in 1980, a new group of owners plus the original club owners came together to purchase 180 acres of land in La Quinta. This group of owners became incorporated as Lake Farms, and eventually grew to a size of 21 investors: Arty Cameron Tom Barrack Bob Bradley Lyn Cobb John Clark Chris Collins Bud Dardi Karlene Garber Glen Holden Alex Jacoy Mack Jason John Leary John Leary, Jr. Fred P. Mannix Bill Meeker Christian Neumann Pat Nesbitt Geoff Palmer Henry Trione Paul Von Gontard Michael Ward Susan Stovall credits Lake Farms with solidifying polo in Southern California: “Each owner, in their own way, have made very special contributions to our club. Lake Farms owners did this for the love of polo, and they made our facility possible for many future generations.”
Alex Jacoy founded the annual Skins polo match: having witnessed the popularity of the Skins golf tournament at PGA, Jacoy transitioned the format to fit polo and it was a wild success.
For the 50th anniversary celebration in January, the club had a lobster bake, a visual presentation of the club’s history, a hot-air balloon glow and a fireworks display.
“There’ll always be polo in the Coachella Valley, in the desert. There’ll always be an Eldorado.” – Alex Jacoy, 2007
1993 Eldorado hosted the U.S. Open for the third time, with the Gehache team of Ruben Gracida, Mike Azzaro, Memo Gracida, and Glen Holden securing the win.

Eldorado Polo Club was purchased by the Los Angeles-based concert promoter Goldenvoice, founders of the worldrenowned Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. Polo continued at Eldorado, with a lease agreement put in place by the Eldorado Board, Club President Mike Ward, and the Goldenvoice owners.
Graham Bray became Polo Manager: a New Zealander and former 7-goal player, Bray has won most of the major tournaments on the west coast during his career. He continues as Manager, contributing to the club’s presentday reputation for competitive polo and world-class fields.

GAME DAY GUIDE Polo Balls & Mallets Polo balls measure 3 to 3½ inches in diameter and are made of hard plastic. A polo mallet is made up of a flexible bamboo shaft and a hardwood head. The length of mallets ranges from 49 to 54 inches, depending on the height of the horse and player. Players must carry the mallet in their right hand, due to right-of-way game rules.
Players & Handicaps Men and women are in direct competition in polo; they compete with and against each other. Each player earns a handicap ranging from -2 Goals to 10 Goals. The higher the handicap, the better the player. The numbers on the players’ jerseys (1 through 4) indicate the player’s team position.
Defensive Moves Similar to a shoulder check in hockey, a ride-off (or bump) allows players to use their ponies to push an opposing player and pony off of the line of the ball. You will also see players perform a hook, by using their mallet to interfere with another player’s swing.
The Line of the Ball This is the most important rule on the field. An imaginary line is created every time the polo ball is struck. The player who is closest to it with the narrowest angle has the right-of-way to approach the ball.
The Field & Game Officials Outdoor polo is played on a field measuring 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. That’s nine football fields! Every game is officiated by two mounted Umpires, and one Referee (or “Third Man”) on the sidelines. These officials are responsible for enforcing the rules of play.
Starting Play & Scoring Goals To start the game, the umpire bowls-in the ball between a line-up of two teams at center field. The main objective is to then put the ball between the goal posts. If you see a flag raised at the end of the field – a goal was scored! After each goal, teams change goal-ends and return to center for another bowl-in.
Polo Ponies Most polo ponies are thoroughbred or part thoroughbred, between 5 and 20 years of age. Ponies are selected for their agility, speed, endurance, and intelligence. Players bring at least one pony per chukker to the game and also bring a few “spare” ponies in case one of their mounts gets fatigued. Polo pony manes are shaved, and their tails are braided to prevent becoming entangled with players’ mallets or reins during the game.
