onderful City, full of attractions...”, so starts Rio de Janeiro’s anthem, by André Filho. It translates very well and also summarizes the attraction mosaic of Brazil’s entry gate, one of the most famous cities in the world. Cariocas’ joy and their kind way of well hosting all those who visit the city have accredited them as “the most cheerful people of the planet”. And they’re under the magnificent blessing statue of Christ, the Redeemer, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, and which, from the top of Morro do Corcovado, has its arms wide open over the gorgeous Baía de Guanabara. What a beautiful scenario!

State of It is one of the most important metropolises of South America. It was the capital of the Colony, the Empire and the Republic and has infinite historical buildings, such as Paço Imperial, besides fortresses and hundreds of churches and temples. Its beauty continues to inspire artists because of its great “postcards” such as the Sugar Loaf, the Botanic Gardens, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra da Tijuca beaches, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Maracanã Stadium and Floresta da Tijuca, the biggest forest in the world inside an urban area and where Tijuca’s National Park is, among many others. The city, by

the way, since July 2012, holds the title of World Heritage in the category urban cultural landscape. Carnival, Samba and Bossa Nova are also trademarks of the city, so it is its main gastronomic icon – feijoada – followed by the traditional caipirinha. Its hundreds of bars and restaurants boil up during the night and bohemia fills the streets of the traditional districts of Lapa and Santa Tereza. A cultural intense agenda happens during the whole year and culminates with the grand feast of réveillon on the sands of Copacabana beach. The big offer of lodging means assures comfort and options for the tourists. The good transport, underground and airports availability also help visitor’s circulation. It is a city to for leisure and the pleasure of open air life. It is a city which is wonderful by nature. z NITERÓI Crossing the 13 kilometres of Ponte RioNiteroi one arrives to this beautiful city situated on the other side of Baía de Guanabara being also reached by sea. It has numerous leisure choices and a big historical complex. Caminho Niemeyer displays works of the famous architect such as Museu de Arte Contemporânea, one of the city’s symbols. There are also several beaches, especially in Região Oceânica.

Big Events T

he City of Rio de Janeiro is, from now on, the main pole of events worldwide, because after all it is going to host, in four- year- time, the major events of the world calendar: Youth World Journey, in 2013; Confederations Cup, also in 2013; FIFA Football World Cup, in 2014; Olympic Games, in 2016; and Rock In Rio, in 2013 and 2015, among others. Besides its natural touristic and leisure attractions, Rio de Janeiro also reveals its vocation for hosting big events. According to the annual ranking of the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Rio de Janeiro was the city that mostly hosted international events in 2011, holding 69 congresses and conventions under the criteria of ICCA (itinerant events with fixed periodicity and 50 participants minimum), placing the destination in the second position in the Americas and as 27th in the world ranking of cities. The metropolis has excellent logistic for events, convention centres are of several

sizes and there’s a big amount of rooms for meetings. Besides that, the city has an excellent capacity for communication and technological resources besides good transport facilities such as ports, airports, coach station, underground, regular bus lines and a big cab network. For big events there are several soccer stadia, with a highlight for Maracanã and Estadio Olímpico João Havelange, besides the multi-use arenas. There is also the athletes’ park, which will work in the Olympic Villa. Rock in Rio is also held there. The city, as well as the State of Rio de Janeiro, has been receiving big investments and public works to increase even more its capacity and logistics, with new stadia, arenas and hotel equipment, besides the enlargement of the airports and works to improve traffic flow. Safety policy has been also positive by providing excellent results and increasing even further the standard of living of the carioca and of the tourist visiting the city.

Six touristic regions to be admired The State of Rio de Janeiro, sung in poem and prose by artists and poets, Brazil’s main entry gate photographed and admired by tourists of the whole planet, sheltering its merry and hospitable people who host everybody with a smile on the face, blessed by Christ, the Redeemer, arms wide open, has indescribable landscapes and a vigorous culture as a result of its many “Wonderful Cities”. Nature is beautiful. There are five national and ten state parks with beaches, moist sub-tropical broadleaf forests, waterfalls, rivers and streams, trails, mountains and forests, rocks, rich flora and fauna and a unique vocation for adventure tourism, sports, gastronomy, health, joy, culture, music, dance and night life. It is a 635 km coast displaying true ecological sanctuaries. The tourist may find surprising attractions

in several regions of the state, going along a distance of approximately three hours away from the capital. Its worldwide famous capital is going to host, in 2016, the 31st Olympic Games and will also be the stage for the big decision match of 2014 FIFA Football World Cup, besides hosting the Youth World Journey, in 2013. The whole state is getting ready and enabling itself to improve tourism hospitality. Big investment amounts on labour force training and infrastructure in the cities are being made. Region of Costa Verde

T

he Region of Costa Verde is in the south coast of the state and its main cities are Angra dos Reis, with its incredible Ilha Grande, and Paraty. Such region has one of most beautiful landscapes of Brazil, where Serra do Mar and Mata Atlântica meet with a sea sometimes turquoise blue, sometimes emerald green. Its historical and cultural heritage is also rich and Angra has excellent hotel infrastructure, with big seaside resorts, very good places for fishing, diving and boat rides. There are more than two thousand beaches and hundreds of islands. Baía da Ilha Grande is considered to be one of the best bays in the country to navigate. The local cuisine is based upon seafood. Many dishes are outstanding because of their exotic flavour coming from caiçaras (local Indian people), such as fish and banana.

z ANGRA DOS REIS It has 365 islands and a quite busy commercial centre, besides modern shopping centres and a big marina. In the hotels, resorts and inns the tourist finds varied options for his/her lodging and an infinity of attractions such as boat rides, natural trails amidst rivers and waterfalls, water sports practice, besides rappel, mountain bike and rafting. It also has a good offer of restaurants and is the compulsory place for big cruises to pass by. Do not miss a boat ride to go to some of the beautiful islands of the bay, such as Ilhas Botinas and Ilhas Cataguazes. z ILHA GRANDE It is a great touristic icon of the region and one of the most beautiful islands of the

country, being a true ecological sanctuary. It has trails, waterfalls and bays, such as the Lagoa Azul, several very beautiful beaches, outstanding Lopes Mendes, Aventureiro and Saco de Palmas. In the central area such as Abrahão, there are many restaurants and inns, besides several agencies offering boat rides around the island. It can be reached by boat, catamarans and big barges of several places in the area, being Angra dos Reis, Jacareí and Mangaratiba the main places of departure. z PARATY Historical city of single beauty with its colonial big houses and pebble stone streets, a bay of very calm waters surrounded by the exuberant vegetation of Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina, where there is a part of Estrada Real, gold old route, by which Minas Gerais’ gold production flowed towards the court in Portugal. It has very good restaurants of international cuisine and excellent inns. Homemade cachaça is one of its major icons and it is also outstanding because of FLIP – Paraty’s Literary Feast happening either in July or August every year. Do not miss the community of Trindade, 17 km away from Paraty. Incredibly beautiful beaches, such as do Meio, and an untouched nature are waiting for you. Other cities constituting the Region of Costa Verde are Mangaratiba, Itaguaí and Rio Claro.

Besides its natural touristic and leisure attractions, Rio de Janeiro also reveals its vocation for hosting big events. Events such as Búzios gastronomy festival, Rio das Ostras’ sea food in and Cabo Frio’s shellfishes are also held. z ARMAÇÃO DOS BÚZIOS This beautiful resort became famous in the 60’s, when it was adopted by the actress Brigitte Bardot. It has some of the most beautiful beaches of Brazil such as Ferradurinha and Geribá,

which are outstanding worldwide. As a whole, they are 20 excellent beaches, some of them having very calm coves. Rua das Pedras is “the point” for busy life. When evening comes, it is there all the people go to. Tens of restaurants, live music bars until daybreak, Brazilian and worldwide shops of griffe attract thousands of tourists every year. z ARRAIAL DO CABO The capital of diving in Brazil has incredibly transparent waters in its beaches. They became paradise for divers and photographers and As Prainhas, in Pontal do Atalaia and Praia Grande are outstanding. The usually calm sea offers the possibility for excellent boat rides, such as the one allowing either to reach the entrance of Gruta Azul or a pop in Ilha da Marinha or Ilha do Farol, where it is only allowed to get off with a licence. In Arraial it is possible also to observe the effects of resurgence, when, during Summer, the sea water becomes quite icy. Well into January and not rarely, it is possible to see penguins on the edge

Another show not to be missed is the sunset at the cliffs of Pontal da Atalaia. z CABO FRIO Yet, the city of Cabo Frio is one of the most charming of the coast of the Lakes Region and every year, especially in Summer, it hosts a big amount of tourists. Its beaches of white and fine sand are beautiful, such as Praia do Forte, das Conchas and Peró, besides the dunes, which are a further attraction. The city has a port that receives cruise passengers in all seasons. It has excellent logistics and many hotels and resorts. Forte São Mateus, on the edge of Praia do Forte is a historical attraction and Ilha do Japonês is a compulsory visitation spot. We should also highlight the many restaurants, the beach fashion and the boat rides along the canal. The other cities constituting the Region of Costa do Sol are: Maricá, Saquarema, Araruama, Iguaba Grande, São Pedro da Aldeia, Casimiro de Abreu, Rio das Ostras, Quissamã, Carapebus and Macaé.

Region of Vale do Café

he Region of Vale do Café, in the hinterlands of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is well known because of its big historical farms, rural architectural heritage left by the coffee agriculture, main product of the Brazilian economy in the XVIII and XIX centuries. Its main touristic cities are Valença, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira. To visit the preserved constructions of the coffee barons and the slave quarters is the same as to go for a walk along the historical and cultural heritage. In this region, culinary flavours remind colonial times and slave food. Linking history to gastronomy, the towns have been investing in events such as “Café, Cachaça e Chorinho” (Brazilian music style) that include in their program a visit to the historical farms and gastronomic route, detaching the abundant food on the colonial breakfast table. z MIGUEL PEREIRA In this bucolic city is Lago Javary, ideal for light pedal and small boat rides, a place of enchantment and romance. Crafts and cachaça are some of its attractions, as well as paraglide practice from its hills and mountains. The climate is considered to be the third best in the world and there’s no lack of fresh air. Other attractions which deserve to be visited are the singer Francisco Alves Museum, the Railway Museum, besides Viaduto Paulo de Frontin, an extensive bridge in steep curb, unique in Latin America. z VALENÇA In this city many properties of colonial architecture have been preserved and opened to lodging and visitation. They are colonial cottages, churches, parks, gardens and farms which keep impressions of part of Brazilian history, such as Jardim Glaziou and Fundação Cultural Lea Pentagna. Vista Alegre and Pau d’Alho farms are outstanding. During the trip, do not miss the district of Conservatória, where there are also historical farms. The stress of such place, however, should go for the serenades, when musicians sing and play in the evenings roaming around the city streets. z VASSOURAS This historical city has got colonial houses, small palaces and monuments, Praça Barão de Campo Belo in detail. Country estates and hotels keep the traditions by means of environment reproduction and the Imperial Tea service. Farms such as Casa da Era have become museum. Another outstanding historical farm is São Luiz da Boa Sorte. Following the sports guides, take the opportunity to ride a horse and go fishing. Other cities of the Region of Vale do Café are: Volta Redonda, Barra Mansa, Barra do Piraí, Pinheiral, Piraí, Engenheiro Paulo de Frontin, Mendes, Paracambi and Paty do Alferes.

ne of the most beautiful regions of the State of Rio de Janeiro is in the midst of the mountains of Serra Verde Imperial. Among its cities, the most important are Petrópolis, Teresópolis and Nova Friburgo. It’s an ideal outing any time in the year. During Summer, fresh air from the mountains lightens the heat. In winter is time to enjoy cosiness, fireplace, a good wine and high life gastronomy. Shopping, especially textiles are a strong point and visits to beer plants are a new tour that arouses tourist’s interest. It has excellent hotels and inns, many of them within the charm schedule. The region is also the place where mountaineering was originated in Brazil and

has spectacular landscapes crossing between Petrópolis and Teresópolis, in Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos. There is an enormous variety of refined dishes, gastronomic influence from the many settlers who came to the region, such as Germans and Italians. One of the most traditional events is Petropolis Gourmet. z NOVA FRIBURGO Known as the “Brazilian Switzerland”, this city has a nice and agreeable climate, as well as hospitality and gastronomy which include fondues and raclettes. Take the opportunity to buy underwear and flowers, important items of the local commerce. Amongst the touristic attractions, Pedra do Cão Sentado and Praça das Colônias are outstanding. Rides and trekking are recommended activities, as well as waterfalls bathing. Take the opportunity to go to the district of Lumiar, where music, regional gastronomy and waterfalls are well sought by tourists. z PETRÓPOLIS Only 59 km away from Rio de Janeiro, this historical city was founded by Emperor Peter II, in 1843, for the Imperial Family to take shelter from the intense heat of the capital during Summer. A combination of historical heritage and ecological tourism is present in this city. Museu Imperial, Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara, Palácio de Cristal, Palácio Quitandinha and Casa de Santos Dumont are some of the outstanding places there. The surroundings display a wonderful landscape, besides a sophisticated and diverse gastronomic script, mainly in the district of Itaipava, where there is also one clothes fair. Visits to Castelo do Barão de Itaipava and to Bohemia and Itaipava beer houses are also a good tip.

Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos are the great highlights of the city, as well as a crafts fair with varied products. Given that Petrópolis is the city of Peter (Pedro II), Teresópolis is the city of Teresa (Teresa Cristina, wife of Pedro II). The agreeable climate of the mountain and the beauty of the valleys and mountains enchanted the Imperial Family and up to nowadays they attract the tourists. The highest natural icon is Dedo de Deus, a cuspidate rock at the top of Serra dos Órgãos.

t is in the Center-South of the State of Rio de Janeiro and displays a combination of exuberant vegetation, waterfalls and paradisiacal spots, with an important set of rocks. The natural highlight is Pico das Agulhas Negras, the highest place in the state, 2,789 meters tall, situated in Parque Nacional do Itatiaia and owner of a mountain range sought by mountaineers and ecological tourism adepts. In this region, two places intensely attract the tourists: the district of Penedo, with its Finish and crafted chocolates, and Visconde de Mauá, an old hippie village with its Maestoso waterfalls. The region of Agulhas Negras also displays a great variety in its cuisine. Trout – local fish – is the base for many dishes of the city’s restaurants.

z ITATIAIA Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is one of the great attractions of the city, which has a good touristic structure. Among the highlights, Pico das Agulhas Negras, black rocks with several ends and Prateleiras, rocks with plateaux. Yet, the district of Penedo is known as “Little Finland”. The local gastronomy, the chocolates and the Finnish ice-cream are the gastronomic highlight. Excellent inns, horse rides and waterfall bathing are part of the outings, besides Casa do Papai Noel (Father Christma’s House).

Brazil and Britain more and more united It is a fact that Britain has been consolidated for the past few years as one of the countries of high priority by Brazilian international promotion. In 2011, some 149,564 British tourists were registered, ranking the country as 11th major emitters to Brazil. And with the 2012 Olympic Games in London, being Rio de Janeiro the seat for the next edition of the Games, the relationship between these two nations tends to get even narrower. The exchange of experiences between the two countries is already confirmed. The partnership was decided, in the beginning of this October, between Embratur (Brazilian Institute for Tourism and responsible body for the publicity and promotion of Brazil abroad) and the Visit Britain. One of the initiatives of the new partnership is to hold an event for Visit Britain to present its main learnings when holding the Olympic Games. After all, the sports event held in London already leaves a visible legacy for the country and certainly will also be helpful for 2016. Embratur estimates that380 thousand tourists will visit Brazil during the Olympic Games period. The forecast for the year 2016 is that 7.9 million tourists enter the country. According to a study developed by FIA (Institute of Administration Foundation) for the Ministry of Sports, the estimated investment of US$ 14.4 billion will provoke an economic flow of US$ 51.1 billion in Brazil. It is also estimated that, in average, 120 thousand jobs be generated annually. The study also reveals the impact expectation of US$ 11 billion in the GDP between 2009 and 2016, and of US$ 13.5 billion between 2017 and 2027. Summing up, the link between Brazil and Britain still can advance much further. The language difference is not anymore a problem, considering the thousands of Brazilian workers in the touristic chain who are being trained mainly on the item idiom. The air links could be more frequent – and this should occur along the next years but, still, the present routes may link the two countries without much disturbance. Be for leisure (searching for sunshine and beach, culture, ecological tourism) or on a business trip, the British tourist won’t certainly regret knowing this enchanting country and seat for the major world events of the next years (besides the Olympic Games, the Youth World Journey, in 2013; the Confederations Cup, in 2013; and the World Cup, in 2014). Here, the great attraction – according to Embratur’s official survey – is people themselves, cozy and happy: welcome to Brazil!

Seen from the top, Rio reveals a unique beauty known as the Cidade Maravilhosa [Wonderful City]. days of blue sky when the sea assumes emerald color and it is possible to appreciate shoal of colored fishes using the observation practice with bare eyes or with the use of masks like snorkel. The islands offer little bands of sand where the tourists seize the opportunity to enjoy themselves. But the major attraction in the itinerary of the islands is the actually Ilha Grande, at a distance of not more than 45 minutes by catamaran from Angra dos Reis, or with by schooner from other locations of Costa Verde. Ilha Grande, which until the beginning of the decade of the 80 was known by the penitentiary which was existent there, was transformed in the last 30 years in a great tourism complex embellished by dozens of simple and welcoming guest houses, small shops, restaurants and receptive tourism agencies which specialize in nautical tourism programs, eco-tourism and adventure tourism. As from the Abraão villa you have access to dozens of small beaches such as Abraãozinho, Saco do Céu or some with more extensive sand bands like the Lopes Mendes of which the access is through boat or tracks. Daily, dozens of schooners or fishermen’s trawlers crosses the bay carrying tourists from as far as Abraão to dive in the Lagoa Azul [Blue Lagoon] or in other points where it is possible to practice diving with equipment or fishing. In the night programming the tourists entertain themselves in the bars and forrós [dancing tune] which stimulate the weekends. It is worthy to remember that in the Ilha Grande there are no banks or electronic banks, but credit cards are accepted by majority of the establishments.

You cannot miss the most busy place in Summer

What about Santa Catarina’s capital? Florianópolis is the best place in the world for showing off, according to an article of the American newspaper New York Times. In its election of destinations not to be missed, it stamped the city as the best place in the planet to spend Summer, being it greater than Ibiza and Saint-Tropez. The North American paper discovered what Brazilians knew long ago. Floripa, how it is dearly called, has around 30 beaches and excellent logistics of good hotels, high category resorts, inns, restaurants and shopping centres. Thus, the outing should start very early in the morning and last for the whole day. Downtown, at XV de Novembro square, the tourist finds a 1773 cathedral, a hundred- year-old pink palace and numerous two-storey-houses eight hundred years in existence, influenced by Portuguese and Brazilian architecture, especially for their façades. Locally, the visitors find cafés, besides craftwork places and music. When the theme is gastronomy Florianópolis is also outstanding. In the capital, a good tip is to call in the Public Market, where it is possible to savour the fishes served by the restaurants. The sea food, actually, is the main ingredient of Santa Catarina’s cuisine. Do not miss a try of the dishes having oysters as their main ingredient. The National Feast of the Oyster and of Azorean Culture (Fenaostra), taking place every year, became one of the symbols of the State capital. It is a true festival held in CentroSul - Florianópolis Conventions Centre - mobilizing the city for ten days with a full agenda of gastronomic attractions.

Meeting a privileged coast To catch a summer’s sight on sunny spring days, beach, sunshine and sea routes get even more attractive and inviting. And Santa Catarina has in Balneário Camboriú the main touristic compound of Santa Catarina’s coast. During the high season it sees its population increase from 90 to 500 thousand, due to tourists, many of them coming from South American countries, especially Argentina. Besides the beautiful beaches – such as Brava and Laranjeiras, interlinked to Praia Central by a cable car from Unipraias leisure compound -, the tourist may enjoy other beaches distributed along Estrada Interpraias, a 14 km road that links Itapema to Balneário Camboriú and where there are six paradisiacal beaches of crystalline blue sea that contrasts with the green of the mountains. Praia Central, in the heart of the city, either during the day or the night, on Avenida Atlântica, alongside the coast, has an atmosphere of excitement and agitation in the bars, restaurants and night clubs. Another good option is to go for a ride on a schooner that shows the city from another angle, including a call in at Praia do Pinho, the first in the country for naturism.

Paradisiacal beaches, with warm waters and blue or green tonality. We are speaking of of the State of Alagoas, which harbors some of the most beautiful beaches of Brazil. The gateway to this paradise is its Capital, Maceió, which apart from the beautiful landscapes has an infrastructure of enviable hotel services. The major beach of Maceió is the Pajuçara. There are concentration of the major hotels, bars and restaurants of the city. In that beach you can swim in natural swimming pools, which are only two kilometers of distance from the edge. Lots of floats awaiting the visitors for a sail are all part of the wonderful scenery of the place. At night, on the same beach, you have the daily traditional artisan market, perfect for those who like to buy souvenirs for friends or relatives. One of the highlights is the beautiful laces, product of the craftsmanship of the locality. Not far from Pajuçara is another famous beach of the city, that of the Ponta Verde, which has this name because the border has a tip of land that rises out of the sea. Until the end of the decade of 1970 it was totally green of cocoa nut trees. The landscape is complete with the view of the lighthouse, which was constructed over the reefs at the beginning of the 20th century to guide the embarkations coming from the north. It is considered the most beautiful urban beach of Maceió. Those who like nightlife will also enjoy the Alagoa’s Capital. There are many options. The hottest and grooving place is the Stella Maris district. The attractions are exciting to all and the visitors can find bars with live music of different rhythms. But to really join the mood, the ideal is to dance the tune of forró, the traditional and local rhythm. Then, the correct address is Lampião, the tourist spot, which is located in Ponta Verde and it opens every day. If your intention is to practice and experience radical sports, more specifically surfing, you need to go to the Jatiúca beach. Its strong waves attract many surfers every day. The beach also counts with the presence of good infrastructure for visitors, with restaurants, hotels, bars, show houses and kiosks.

However, travel through this distance to spend a day in this paradise is worth it. During low tide, the sand banks give an extra charm to the beach surrounded by coconut trees and a barrier of rocks. The fishermen live in a bucolic village. The beach of Camacho it is at the mouth of Maragogi River. It is taken by the Atlantic Rainforest and receives the name of the place that was there before. Very near downtown, the beach of Burgalhau has fine white sand, besides light blue waters. It counts on a restaurant and a hotel. Near there is Rio

Lençóis Maranhenses: a surrealistic beauty Landscape in Lençóis Maranhenses is surrealistic and does not follow any logic. It is a “desert” alternated by fresh water lagoons drying for some months and reappearing during the rainy season. In them, fishes, shellfishes and green tortoises mysteriously reappear as if they’d never left. The region is incomparable and is part of Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, created in 1981. It has 155 thousand hectares and is an endless pile of extremely white dunes. Seen from a distance, the sand seems to shape a straight and uniform peel, but it is enough to get near it to realize its irregular texture “combed” by the strong wind sweeping the dunes the whole time. The landscape, constantly redesigned by the gale, prevents everybody from seeing exactly the same image twice. In Lençóis, the rainy season goes from January to June. It is at this time that the lagoons are reborn and the fuller rivers start to be navigated again by voadeiras and bring nurture for the local people, living on the fishing of this period.

During drought, the number of lagoons decreases and become less abundant, but nevertheless enchanting because of their beauty and the contrast of colours they display. Allied to such attraction, the continuous sunshine and the agreeable temperature of the water are the perfect combination for the baths. The touristic pole of Lençóis Maranhenses is split between Barreirinhas and Atins, where the river Preguiça goes. It has its source in the State’s hinterland, is 120 km long and goes ahead in zigzag bordering - at its right – APA (Environmental Protection Area) of Pequenos Lençóis, dune areas more modest than the ones of the national park. To cross the river near the place it meets the sea has already become a traditional outing for those visiting the region. The outing is a good way of knowing the vegetation surrounding the river. In Barreirinhas, the landscape is dominated by tall and abundant vegetation, pointed by palm trees. The most common ones are buruti, jussara (or açai) and carnauba.

The first stop, soon after the exit of Barreirinhas, is in Vassouras. Take the opportunity to drink coconut water in the stand at the riverbank. Little monkeys get near and act as true candidates to top model: they get near, pose for the cameras and do not care about the flashes. The next stop is in Mandacaru, which major attraction is the immense lighthouse Preguiças, built in the 40’s. Visits are allowed every day. And, from the top, 35 meters high, after winning nothing less than 160 steps, there is a dramatic view: the sea, the dunes of pequenos lençóis, a big part of the river and, at the background, the wide band of sand limiting the beach. Whoever wishes to see where the sea and the river meet each other may stretch the outing until Caburé, a fishermen village in a sand peninsula between the river and the sea. The traveller enjoys beautiful landscapes and the calm and deserted sea. The only disturbing aspect is the wind. Tie the towels up and hold the caps, otherwise the race to recover them will be hard.

São Luís: 400 years of culture, history, rhythms and flavours There is a lot to do in São Luís. And a good start may be to take a stroll around historic center. By the way, it is compulsory. Amid stony streets, squares, alleys and steps, a lot to see: big tiled houses, belvederes, portals, balconies, churches, fountains and monuments. Adding to the federal and state declared heritages there are around 3,500 buildings of the colonial and imperial periods, amid two-storey houses, palaces, churches and houses of doors and windows in different states of conservation. Portugal Street, in the district of Praia Grande, the port’s old zone, is used to be the starting point for the tourists because it has buildings that may be admired at a distance and be inner visited, such as Casa de Nhozinho and Museu de Artes Visuais (Visual Arts Museum). Turning the corner, one finds the market Casa das Tulhas, in Rua da Estrela. In the surroundings of downtown, Palácio dos Leões, seat of the state government, is the place where the history of the European disputes for the old Portuguese colony is told. The fortress was built by the French in 1612 and it is from there that comes the name of the city then founded, in obeisance to the child king Louis XIII. Three years later, when the French surrendered and were expelled, the palace was occupied by

the Portuguese, who, in 1620, disembarked around 200 Azorean couples in São Luís. For those who do not dismiss a feast, June is by far the busiest month in the capital. It is the time for quadrille and bumba-meu-boi (brazilian

folk dance), for crioula’s drums and fair. It is also when the feasts in tribute to Saint Anthony, Saint John, Saint Peter and Saint Marshall happen and São Luís becomes a place of full joy. If the visitor prefers nature, it is enough to remember that he/she is in an island surrounded by beautiful beaches. Ponta d’Areia, Calhau, Olho d’Água, and Araçagy are some options. To eat well, another excellent tip is São Luís Pole where it is possible to taste almost everything that the exotic gastronomy from Maranhão offers. Cuxá rice, fish stews, shrimp pies, regional sweets and fruit juices and much more. Before the evening reggae, an attractive place to appreciate the sunset is Praça Gonçalves Dias, also called Largo dos Amores. The honoree poet was born in Maranhão’s hinterland – Caxias – and died in the sea. He was only 20 years old when he wrote the famous poem lines of “Canção do Exílio”: “My land has palm trees,/ Where the little bird sings;/ the birds who twitter here,/ Do not twitter as in there”. In his monument, Gonçalves Dias wears frock coat, under the Sun and on a palm tree, as if he were overflying the city. The square has many down levels and from them it is possible to lean over and view Rio Anil, a route for fishermen in sailing vessels. Looking right, Baía de São Marcos appears. The outings to Alcântara leave from there.

São Paulo receives more than 11million tourists per year. Contrary of what it looks, not all the people who come to the Capital of São Paulo are on business trip. The city is very wealthy culturally, having some of the major museums of Brazil, apart from being the stage of great shows. Even the executives who need to visit Sao Paulo end up enjoying the world of cultural, gastronomic and night options it offers. As in everything related to São Paulo, the numbers are also enormous. There are nothing less than 110 museums, 160 theaters, 260 cinema halls and 54 parks. This without counting the bars and the nightclubs, which agitate the city night and the 59 thematic centers of commerce. Only restaurants sum up more than 12 thousand, with options of all tastes and pockets. For those who go in search of culture, São Paulo is the correct destination. The museums are among the most visited attractions. For those who want to know a little of the Brazilian history and culture, it is worthy to visit the Museu da Língua Portuguesa [Museum of the Portuguese Language]. It is located in the Estação da Luz [Luz Railway Station], which also pleases those who like to appreciate architecture, since it has structures brought from England which copy the Big Ben and the Westminster abbey. Within the museum, the visitor will find interactive resources and a lot of technology, which help to understand better the language spoken in Brazil. Apart from videos and audiovisual resources, it has a 106 meters screen with simultaneous projections of films on the daily use of the language. There are games, a square and the Árvore da Palavra – a sculpture of 16 meters created by the artist Rafic Farah, with an audio which repeats a mantra composed by Arnaldo Antunes, a famous brazilian contemporary poet.

The museums are among the most visited attractions If the idea is know a little bit of Brazilian history, the perfect would be to visit the fascinating Museu do Ipiranga [Ipiranga Museum], in southern zone of the city, very close to the place where the emperor Dom Pedro I declared the independence of Brazil on September 7, 1822. Its collection tells a lot of the Brazilian history, there are more than 125 thousand objects (parts, antiquities), among furniture, costumes and utensils which belong to figures of Brazilian history like the bandeirantes [members of the colonial exploratory expedition], emperors and coffee barons. There are also collections of melee weapons, objects related to the Constitutional Revolution of 1932 (movement which had as objective to overthrow the government of Getúlio Vargas and the creation of a constitution) and the room reserved for Santos Dumont, the pioneer of aviation. If you love art then you cannot leave out without visiting the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (Masp) [Art Museum of São Paulo]. Even before entering it is already possible to observe a true art work: the building itself. The futurist work is

located in one of the most popular postal cards of São Paulo, Avenida Paulista, and counts with a large open space, without columns on the ground floor. Without doubt a separate attraction. In it could be seen works of famous painters and sculptors of all the centuries. Its collection, with around eight thousand pieces, is declared National Historic and Artistic Patrimony (IPHAN) since 1969. The highlights are on account of the western paintings, mainly Italian and French. Delacroix, Renoir, Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh are some of the artists whose works are exposed in the museum. The newest museum in the city, and which has to do with the people and Brazilian culture, is the Museu do Futebol [Football Museum]. Located in the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Municipal Stadium, popularly known as Pacaembu. It proposes to tell the history of the most popular sport in the planet. It is the sole museum in the world dedicated exclusively to football. The halls mix multimedia resources with historic objects, such as the shirts used by Pelé and Garrincha, for example.

Pará Unveil the multiple faces of Belém’s culture History and culture get mixed up in Belém. In its 396 years of old, Pará’s capital offers plenty of monuments, places and costumes which, literally, reflect the history of a people who know well how to host their visitors. Do program either a morning or an afternoon to explore Mercado Vero-Peso. It is the opportunity to understand and unveil the whole Amazon diversity. The market is seen as the biggest open fair in Latin America and has everything one can imagine: from fishes weighing over 50 kilograms and regional fruits, until medicines for all diseases. Local sellers assure that their “portions” made of a mix of regional medical plants and their aromatic

baths can help with the most exotic wishes. Do not leave the market without tasting either a genuine açaí-in-the-bowl or the famous tacacá. But keep attention to the clock. The dish is only sold after 4 p.m. There it is also possible to take a little local souvenir such as a Marajó’s ceramic piece. Go on walking and get to know a series of historical constructions quite near, such as Mercado de Ferro, Mercado da Carne, Praça do Relógio, Doca, Ladeira do Castelo, Solar da Beira and Praça do Pescador. Such setting is kept as heritage by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). Go on to visit Belém’s landmark: Forte do Presépio. It was built in a peninsula by the Tupinambás and was conceived to protect the city on the right bank of the mouth of the river Guama. The fortress belongs to the beautiful architectural setting Feliz Lusitânia with buildings from the X VII and XVIII centuries. It is also worth a visit to Santo Alexandre complex, to Catedral da Sé, to Casa das Onze Janelas, to Igreja de São João, to Museu de Arte Sacra and to two small museums which shelter archeological pieces from the origins of Belém. Another good tip is Museu de Gemas. Precious stones are displayed for the wonder of tourists of the whole world. Such true rare jewels use as raw material stones of amethyst and pink quartz over three thousand years old. Do not forget to order a jewel. Local craftsmen mould exclusive and customized pieces. The museum also shelters São João Liberto chapel. The outstanding point is its original wall from XVI century. Because of its perfect acoustic, the chapel is very much used for masses and concerts. Antônio Lemos, the visitor finds a varied asset of fine arts. Yet, in Palacete Pinho the attraction is its own architectural innovation style. It is a symbol of the rubber economic cycle peak, at the end of the XIX century. The little palace was inspired by the Italian palaces and villas of the XVI century and its big rooms were very much used for performance of orchestras and concerts of national and international artists playing the piano. If you want to walk around its inner spaces, make an appointment for either a working day or even for a Saturday morning. The little palace closes after 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Its enormous windows assure a privileged view of the city.

If you don’t want to wait for such date, the tip is to go to Basílica de Nazaré on arrival and feel a bit the meaning of the Círio. Built by Barnabite priests with the help of Pará’s people in the beginning of XX century, it is a copy - in smaller size – of a 20 meters tall,

24 meters wide and 62 meters long Roman cathedral. The basilica assembles details on its stained glass windows and very beautiful pieces in golden marbles reflecting biblical moments and the devotion to Pará’s people patroness, Our Lady of Nazareth. Jean Barbosa

The evening in Belém also offers a varied cultural program. In Theatro da Paz, at Praça da República, concerts by Pará’s Symphonic Orchestra and competitions of lyrical singing are usually held. Those who try to live the local experiences may take the risk of dancing carimbó. But it is necessary to get the feeling! Women dance barefoot and wear long colourful skirts. Men wear white trousers with their hem rolled upwards. The beauty of it are the body movements keeping it leaning forward. It is also worth it to get acquainted with Pará’s major encounter of faith and culture. Círio de Nazaré always happens on the second Sunday in October in Belém. Furthermore than a procession, Círio reflects the whole devotion of people from Pará to Our Lady of Nazareth.

Amazonas Manaus: a culture influenced by local Indians Manaus is not only the gate to Floresta Amazônica, The State of Amazonas’ capital has a lot to offer when culture is the matter. The wealth displayed by Amazon culture - receiver of a considerable influence from the local Indians - is present in regional music, as well as in fine arts, crafts and folkloric manifestations. It is possible to follow an intense cultural program in the capital of Amazonas during the whole year. From Carnabo - happening in February at the samba catwalk - to Boi Manaus – celebration of the anniversary of Manaus in October, one goes through Festival Folclórico do Amazonas in June. However, one of the most important cultural

milestones in Manaus is Theatro Amazonas, hosting several opera spectacles and classical shows. Amongst them is Festival Amazonas de Ópera, happening in the second fortnight in April and going on until May. It is the major event on gender of Latin America. Another highlight is Festival Internacional de Jazz, held in the second fortnight in July. The whole program is open to the public and it is for free. The theater was initially built in 1882, and was opened on December 31, 1896, at the peak of the rubber economic cycle. It became historical heritage on November, 28, 1966. The building

has capacity for 701 people in the audience and in the box floors. It is used both for classical and popular dance, music and theater holding local, national and international artists presentations. Tourists and communities may take guided and theatrical tours with characters of the time revisiting important facts of their history. There are other cultural activities in Manaus quite well known internationally, such as Amazonas Film Festival, an international festival which happens in November and highlights adventure films in all its expressions, emphasizing themes of nature and environment. The city still counts on several cultural centres.

Curiosity of the Festival

Parintins: the biggest popular feast of Amazonas Boi-Bumbá de Parintins is one of the main cultural attractions of the state of Amazonas. The feast, happening in the end of July, has already conquered international prestige and every year attracts thousands of visitors. All the characters involved wear rich fancy dresses, in which the use of recycled material from nature such as fibers, straws and sparkles prevails. The festival is a show in the open air, where two associations compete, Boi Garantido – known as “Boi do povão” (people’s ox) – red, and Boi Caprichoso, blue – seen as “Boi da elite” (elite’s ox). The show happens at Bumbódromo (Centro Cultural e Esportivo Amazonino Mendes), a kind of a stadium with the shape of a stylized ox head, sheltering 35 thousand spectators.

During the three evenings of the show, the two oxen exploit regional themes such as legends, Indian rituals and riparian costumes by means of allegories and staging. A fact that deserves to be highlighted is whilst an Ox parades and its components make choreographies, the opponents have to remain in silence, to prevent the spectacle from being dazed. Bumbás’ ritual shows us the legend of Pai Francisco and Mãe Catirina who manage - with the help of Pajé (Indian kind of shaman) - to make the ox of the boss to be reborn. The legend tells us that Mãe Catirina, pregnant, wishes to eat the tongue of the most beautiful ox of the farm. In order to satisfy his wife’s desire, Pai Francisco orders the murder of the favourite ox

of the boss. Pai Francisco is found out, tries to escape, but is arrested. To save the ox, a priest and a doctor (pajé, according to the Indian tradition) are called and the ox is reborn. Pai Francisco and Mãe Catirina are forgiven and there’s a great celebration. Boi Garantido has the red heart as its symbol. It was founded in 1913 by Lindolfo Monteverde, famous local poet-singer. During the military service, Monteverde got ill and pledged to São João, in case he recovered his health, he would create a Boi that would go to the streets every year whilst he lived. Yet, Boi Caprichoso has the blue star as its symbol. According to the official version the ox started in 1925, when two brothers from Ceará created it to pay a pledge.

If it depended upon the Amazon fauna context, Festival de Parintins should celebrate either the jaguar or the anaconda. Not the ox. But Boibumbá was a consequence of the rubber cycle, when thousands of Northeast men and women went to try their luck in the rubber extraction culture. They originated from a typically cattle raising region, bearing their costumes such as Boi-bumbá of the June feasts of the Northeastern region. Another curiosity is that the jury only use green pens in order to keep the results exempt from colour influence.

The mountainous region of Espírito Santo, the Brazilian state located in the southeast of the country, is home to areas of unique natural and cultural wealth and the capital Vitória is only 40 minutes away. There, tourists can enjoy the cosiness of the mountains experiencing the local cuisine, products from agricultural tourism and, for those who like a little more excitement, adventure sports. One of the cities in the region is Domingos Martins, which still retains strong traces of its past, which can be observed in gastronomy, culture, craft and architecture. Once you are in Domingos Martins, as well as enjoying the natural beauty, it is possible to try different types of sports such as hiking, rappelling down waterfalls, horseback riding around beautiful scenery and rafting the rapids of the Jucu River. The city welcomes visitors with its pleasant climate and it has a maximum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. Akin to its climate, Domingos Martins still has an excellent infrastructure of hotels, which receive a large number of tourists throughout the year, especially in the winter season. Two major events are held during this time: the Winter Festival and the International Festival of Wine. To understand a little of bit of the history of the city, a visit to the Igreja Luterana (Lutheran Church) is a must.

Built in 1866, it was the first Protestant church in the country to have a steeple tower. Another must see is the Museu Histórico (Historical Museum) and Casa de Cultura (House of Culture). They both portray German and Italian colonization, with photos, colonial furniture, paintings and objects which were brought from Europe. The Pedra Azul State Park, a nature reserve, has several trails which also surprise its visitors due to its diversity of fauna and flora. An efficient way to visit all the attractions of Domingos Martins is by taking the Circuito

Turístico Rural do Chapéu (Rural Tourist Circuit of Chapéu), located on Chapéu Highway, at an altitude of 870 meters. The descendants of Germans who inhabit the region convey their culture through its cuisine, with dishes based on tilapia and shrimp as well as homemade food made in a wood stove. The site offers a lake for recreational fishing, trails through its bushland, sauna, natural pools, football field and a games room. They also produce chocolates and other chocolate-based items and there is a fruit plantation.

as there are several beautiful species of orchids littered around the city. To understand why this city is so famous, you should visit the two orchid nurseries, Nego Plants and Florabela Orchids. The cultural and folklore traditions of the city are conveyed by knowledgeable and friendly people. Marechal Floriano also has an important cultural heritage with museums, historical monuments and old train stations. The Cultural and Community Center Ezequiel Ronchi is one of the museums created with the aim of rescuing, preserving and disseminating the culture left by immigrants. The collection, formed after community donations, consists of objects related to Italian and German immigration. Other places worth visiting are the Waterfall of Bem-te-vi and the Grotto of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes). The first is a 40 meters high waterfall, which houses a secular cariniana (jequitibá) tree which is 50 meters high and is decorated with orchids and bromeliads. The Grotto is a kind of “marquee”,

where the founders of Santa Maria used to sleep in1879 and today still holds the statue of Saint Lourdes. For lovers of agricultural tourism, Marechal Floriano offers the Vale do Verde (Green Valley) Tourist Route. The rural enterprises covered by the route have been adapted to cater for tourists seeking contact with country life. There are waterfalls, lakes, walks and visits to the orchid nurseries and restaurants with delicious local cuisine.

Brasília, Humanity’s Monumental City Brasília, Brazil’s capital represents a modern mark of architecture and urban design. Its structure was chosen in a public bid selecting the work of the urban designer Lúcio Costa, a project different from everything known up to that time and which brought a new proposal for life quality. Niemeyer, famous architect of the country, drew the innovating curves, the streets organized by zones and a wide green area. Such vanguardism and creativity assured to Brasilia the title of World Cultural Heritage

on December 7, 1987. It has been 25 years since the transformation of the Brazilian nation symbol into a world one. The objective of the title conceded by UNESCO is to assure that the next generations will have the opportunity of knowing such good, preventing it from being either decharacterized or destroyed. When it started to be built - in 1957 - Brasília still was a capital of few inhabitants. Today is the fourth most populous metropolis in the country. We deal here with the city that has the

biggest area in the world protected as universal heritage. It covers 112,25 km2. Lúcio Costa designed in-between blocks, blocks, commercial and residential blocks, hotel and banking zones, besides the wide streets and under the logic of the Cartesian plan. Everything was in the shape of an airplane, constituting Brasilia’s pilot plan. Stemming from such conception, Oscar Niemeyer started to draw a city worthy authorities. 30 National Congress took the streets. The curve lines features - Niemeyer’s trademark- gave the modern face of Brasília. WHERE TO GO 9 During a walk around the surrounding areas, it is worth it to go for a visit to near destinations also. Verify these three options for outings: 1 – The dunes of Cumbuco on a buggy. It is a set of beautiful dunes alternated by lagoons and shaping an enchanting landscape. There are raft rides there. It is in Caucaia town, 30 km away from the capital. 2 – Enjoy the beaches surrounded by cliffs and coconut trees of Canoa Quebrada, a village with hotels and inns in the East coast of Ceará, 150 km away from Fortaleza. 3 – Jericoacoara is one of the busiest destinations of Ceará’s coast and seen as one of the most beautiful in Brazil. It is in Aracaú district, 300 kilometers away from Fortaleza.

Fortaleza: northeast’s new capital of business tourism Notorious for the beauty of its coast, Fortaleza has just won a new complex geared to fairs, events and congresses. The new Centro de Eventos do Ceará, next to Centro de Convenções, in Edson Queiroz district, is the second biggest place to hold fairs and events in Brazil and the first in the Northeast. It is able to shelter up to 30 thousand people in just one event. It is a modern construction with two pavilions, each one with 13.480 square meters and capacity to hold 42 simultaneous events. The complex has acclimatized areas and a 2.750 square- meter- room for exhibitions, besides sports courts and an area destined to fairs of the most diverse segments of the economy. The supporting rooms with modular walls may be used for meetings, workshops and seminars. The complex also has sop facilities, bank branches, 4.850 square meters for eating, 3.200 parking spaces, out of which 1760 roofed.

Centro de Eventos do Ceará still counts on an automation system with an information processing center. On the first mezzanine, there are eight 300 - meter- rooms and, on the second, 10 rooms to be used for talks. Last year, Fortaleza hosted a total of 2.85 million visitors. Still in 2011, the city registered 182 events, out of which 67,91% national, 28,57% local, 25,82% regional and 7,69% international. It is worth it to highlight that 54,39% out of such events were local and regional, showing the importance of the incentive to creation and performance of events in Ceará and the states of the Northeast. The expectation now is to double such events volume. The accumulation between 2006 and 2011, the touristic flow, motivated by congresses and events, increased in176,2% in the period, at an average rate of 22,5% per year. Last year, out of the almost 100 thousand foreigners who visited the city, 14% were on business.

WHAT TO EAT 9 Regional gastronomy and dishes based on shellfish are the menus’s highlights in Fortaleza’s restaurants. Among the local dishes do taste three good suggestions: 1 – Jerked beef, inheritance of the leather cycle, is used in the preparation of paçoca (meat mixed with manioc flour) that follows baião-dedois, which actually has as main ingredients cowpea with rice, sun dried meat (Picanha), sausage, coalho cheese, cream, butter-in-abottle, coriander and chives. 2 – As Ceará is the major crab exporter of the country, the local dish is caranguejada. It is served with farofa (manioc flour fried in butter) and vinagrete (Brazilian sauce of vinegar basis), it has a peculiar way of being eaten, demanding a bit of hard work. To find the crab’s meat it is necessary to break the shell of the animal. Usually, such process is done with the aid of a small hammer. 3 – Sweets, juices and ice-creams are made of tropical fruits such as cashew, papaya, coconut, mango, guava, passion fruit, soursop, jackfruit, avocado, naseberry, nance, hog plum (spondias mombin), among others.

Good hotels and easy access Access - Fortaleza international airport Pinto Martins is among the top ten busiest in the country regarding passengers’ volume. It operates direct flights and connections from the main airlines to all capitals. Presently, it has a flow of 16 international flights, some of them regular, like TAP ones. Lodging – Five hotels may be built in Fortaleza until 2014. Presently, there are already 40 thousand beds in the Metropolitan area, and there are future projects on the way. There are options from the simplest ones to resorts and five stars hotels.

For the last 15 years, tourism of events and business has been responsible for incrementing the economy of Bahia’s capital in US$ 1.2 billion, corresponding to an annual input of US$ 79 million. Salvador, the first Brazilian capital, worldwide known by its cultural richness, differentiated gastronomy, hospitality and joy of its people, popular feasts and beautiful landscapes, counts on excellent infrastructure to hold events of small, medium and big size. It is not by chance that Bahia’s capital, according to ICCA (International Association of Congresses and Conventions), is considered to be the third Brazilian city to host international events. The city has the biggest airport of the North/ Northeast of Brazil, receiving around 240 flights per day coming from the whole country, besides international flights from Europe, North America and South America. There are more than 35 thousand beds offered in hotels of different ranks, answering to all levels of demand. The North coast still offers other 10 thousand beds distributed by cozy inns and resorts of international standard. There’s no lack of rooms for events in Salvador and the North Coast of Bahia. The region offers an enormous variety of places to hold technical and scientific, commercial and corporate events, answering to the requests of the most demanding clients. Full Calendar the Whole Year Round The Convention Bureau is a private entity created in Salvador to attract events to Bahia’s capital. It was responsible for holding 962 congresses since 1996, increasing the touristic flow in 1.3 million people, consolidating such segment as responsible for the major indexes

of hotel occupation in the city. Only on account of the work of the Convention, Salvador and the North Coast hosted 79 congresses this year, attracting a public of 94.8 thousand people and generating more than 379 thousand overnight stays in the local hotel network. In 2011, the

Bureau confirmed 81 events, which will, along the next four years, when they will be held, attract a public of more than 110 thousand tourists. An interesting data is where the congresses were held: 22% of the events happened in Centro de Convenções da Bahia, whilst 31% chose the events rooms of the hotels. Besides that, Bahia follows the slogan of having events in its calendar, such as Stock Car, which will be happening for the next five years in August, in the capital of the State, Centro de Convenções da Bahia (Bahia’s Convention Center) - opened in March 1979 and managed by Empresa de Turismo da Bahia S/A – Bahiatursa, enjoys a strategic location. It is near the entrepreneurial axe of the city and has easy and quick access to the main places in Salvador, through modern and well signalled avenues. Out of the total events held in 2011 in Bahia’s capital, 22% happened in Centro de Convenções da Bahia, whilst 31% chose the events rooms in hotels. It is 20 minutes away from Centro Histórico, five minutes away from Salvador’s coach station and 15 minutes away from Aeroporto Internacional Luís Eduardo Magalhães. The Convention Center is also near the main hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatre and beaches, and to Aeroclube Plaza Show, a big leisure and gastronomic centre.

Porto Alegre offers a diversified events agenda

According to International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) 2011 data, Porto Alegre is the 5th capital that mostly develops Events Tourism in Brazil. One of the differentials is the hotel network: there are 13.500 beds and 35 thousand beds in a ray of 150km. Porto Alegre & Região Metropolitana Convention & Visitors Bureau acts to increase the touristic flow in the capital and neighbouring towns, through attraction, generation and support to events. It also keeps marketing actions aiming at promoting an attractive image of the city. The activities are an incentive to sustainable tourism and they generate development and cultural, scientific, technological and artistic diffusion for the State. Besides Business Tourism, the cultural agenda is another fact that attracts – each year – more and more

tourists. The year starts with Carnival of Porto Alegre, counting on parades of schools of samba of the Special Group, of Group of Access and of the Tribes, held at Pista de Eventos do Complexo Cultural do Porto Seco. Besides the parades, there are balls, competitions and jam sessions of samba. For those interested in crafts the Feira Internacional de Artesanato (Feiarte) is considered to be one of the main events of the sector in the city, gathering national and international artists. And, besides, it displays crafts, culinary, costumes and local dances of the different countries taking part. Rio Grande do Sul’s capital also has an event to celebrate the grape: Porto Alegre’s Grape and Prune Feast. The event provides direct sale from the producer to the consumer of grapes and prunes of several qualities, as well as several products of the city agro-business.

On the religious side, however, the Feast of Our Lady of Navigators is considered to be the major one in the city and pays tribute to the Saint of the same name. On the date, it also occurs the tribute to Iemanjá. In Porto Alegre is also held Salão Náutico do Mercosul, which gathers companies related to maritime life and of articles for sports practices and displays their products. Parallel to it, there are nautical competitions and courses on the subject. Semana Farroupilha is another important event on Porto Alegre’s agenda. The program has lectures, courses, debates and seminars, mate and culinary workshops, books fair with gauchos themes, exhibitions of vestments and typical wares, dance and gaucho songbook shows and competition of games traditionally linked to Rio Grande do Sul’s culture.

The events agenda of Bento Gonçalves, a city extremely linked to the cultivation of grapes and wine production, has in feasts related to wines its big events: Bento in Vindima and Fenavinho. Besides the feasts focused on wine production, the city also is the seat for important events of the furniture industry, such as Movelsul and Fimma. Besides that, Bento Gonçalves prepares Christmas in Bento and Bento in dance. The feast Bento in Vindima celebrates the beginning of the grape crop in the city. The main objective of the event, extending until March, is to attract tourists to Bento Gonçalves during the low season, that is, Summer. The event is recent and had its first edition in 2009, but in 2011 it already attracted over 800 thousand tourists. According to the

Secretary for Tourism of the city, Ivane Fávero, the main goal of the event is to conquer the tourist for a longer stay in Bento Gonçalves. And the stay in the city is worth your while! Get to know Caminho das Pedras and Rota das Cantinas Históricas. Festa e Feira Nacional do Vinho (Fenavinho) is one of the most important events for the celebration of wine excellence in Brazil. The objective of the event is to promote the Brazilian wine and also its producers. Much older than Bento em Vindima, the event had its Brazilian first edition in 1967, and it has been growing year after year. Such international furniture fair is the most representative of the sector in Latin America due to the big number of exhibitors and also to the presence of the most important trademarks of the furniture industry. Fimma Brasil, however, is among the six biggest fairs of the sector worldwide. Its importance is due to the quality of the exhibitors contributing to the national and to the Latin American furniture industry. The fair is promoted by the Association of Furniture Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Movergs) and is held each two years, always in odd years.

Ibitipoca: where the nature remains intact and exuberant Ibitipoca State Park is located 225 miles from Belo Horizonte and spreads over 1488 hectares. Curitiba was a city totally designed to offer life quality to its inhabitants In Curitiba the visitor has the opportunity of getting to know the city in an unusual way: by Tourism Line, a special bus that circulates around the main touristic spots of Curitiba and may run for 44 kilometres in two and a half hours through the parks and squares. All the buses are equipped with information system recorded in three idioms - Portuguese, English and Spanish. Start the tour by Praça Tiradentes, the city’s starting point. Go to Rua das Flores, the first esplanade in the country and the most important commercial centre of Curitiba. The name is due to the geographical position as Foz do Iguaçu separates the countries of Paraguay and Argentina, two of Brazil’s neighbouring countries. The falls can be seen from both the Brazilian and the Argentine sides. The Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat) at 150 meters wide and 80 meters high is the most spectacular of all the falls. It also helps divide the two countries. To get as close as possible to the plummeting water there are two ways. The quietest is walking through the observatory and the most radical is taking a boat trip called the Macuco Safari. This mini adventure starts early as a car will pick you up for a drive along the river. There is a bilingual guide in the car and they will explain all about the plants and trees in the region and there is always the possibility of seeing some animals along the way, because Iguaçu is in a National Park and its forests are protected. After this drive there is a short trek of 400 meters to the start of the boat ride. From here on, it is a 30 minute long shower as you see the falls from the most privileged angle. The state of Pernambuco is one of the most visited by LGBT in Brazil. Besides Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and São Paulo, the state is considered by the LGBT a gay friendly destination. Aiming to attract more tourists in this segment, in 2009, a guide that lists the main attractions, tours and services for this audience was created. Moreover, the state is creating a seal, the Happy GO, which will signify and promote these establishments. The seal will also be an incentive for creating a calendar of events for the LGBT audience. The Secretary of Tourism of Pernambuco and Recife, in partnership with the Recife Convention & Visitors Bureau, intend to list the parties and events that already exist for this segment, and also create others in various places. Those visiting the city in 2013 will be able to participate as they will begin the week before Carnival. A series of parties along Boa Viagem, the main beach in the town, will also be organized. Like all northeastern states, the main attraction in Pernambuco is its beautiful beaches. Visited by many LGBT’s, Calhetas Beach is located in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, just 33 kilometers from Recife. Its crystal clear waters are an invitation to dive and to see various coral formations. Another highlight of the area is the worldwide famous Artur Bar where celebrities regularly visit. Its specialty is the hospitality and, let’s not forget, the delicious seafood. Near Cabo de Santo Agostinho is Ipojuca, which is home to the beach of Porto de Galinhas, which is another paradise that makes Pernambuco’s coast one of the most beautiful in Brazil. There are 18 kilometers of beaches and among the main features are the clear, warm waters and the white sand. The coconut trees that complement the landscape also help create some very spectacular scenery. The highlights are the immense natural pools and the coral reefs. Diving is the favoured activity to closely observe the fauna, flora and the beautiful reefs.

Recife: a vibrant capital The capital of Pernambuco combines unique features that offer an unforgettable experience to visitors. Among its key attributes are the cultural effervescence, fine gastronomy and of course the stunning nature. The nine kilometers of beaches are in itself an invitation for a good walk or even a dip in the natural pools formed by the reefs. The promenade is very busy and has a good infrastructure to service tourists. A must do is the boat ride down the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers. As well as Recife’s architecture, the trip focuses on the many bridges in the city. Each one has its own character and history, which are explained in detailed by the tour guides. You can see historic buildings, mansions, palaces and squares from a different angle – a unique experience. The cultural itinerary around the city also includes a visit to various important landmarks such as the Francisco Brennand Atelier. There you will find various sculptures inspired by mythological and literary figures. There are also paintings and tile panels made by the artist and a garden designed by Burle Marx with water features including ponds and fountains. Another recommended tip is a visit to the Golden Chapel. The ceiling and walls of the church are filled with sacred paintings. For those fun lovers who prefer a greater contact

with nature, Recife offers such attractions as the Dois Irmãos Park, the trails around the Botanical Garden, Jaqueira Park and one of the newest parks in the city – Dona Zilu, which is located in Boa Viagem and designed by Oscar Niemeyer. If you find yourself in Recife and don’t stroll through the hills of Olinda – which are less than ten kilometers from the capital – it will be considered sacrilegious. Full of ups and downs along stone streets, the city is surrounded by baroque churches filled with Portuguese tiles and gilded woodwork. The Monastery of São Benedito is one of the places to visit. There you can admire a painting of St Sebastian from the 16th century, which was donated by the Vatican but make sure you see its baroque altar which is made of cedar plated gold. It may even be a little tiring, but a walk to Alto da Sé is extremely rewarding. You can loose yourself whilst considering the sunset and the panoramic view of the city and its coastline. It is an almost indescribable experience. Another attraction of the place is its famous tapioca, a typical dish from the Northeast made from starch flour, and they can be filled with either sweet or savory fillings. Locals assure that the tapioca served at Alto da Sé is the best in the world. It is definitely worth a visit to experience it out!

Presently, the majority of people know the meaning and usefulness of applications, programs developed with an aim at making the performance of users’ practical activities easier, being them either on computers or on mobile phones. Several companies started to bet on such strong interaction tool. It is the case of Embratur (Brazilian Tourism Board, which intensifies its bet on digital media as a platform for dissemination abroad of Brazilian touristic destinations. The reinforcement of such strategy is based upon market indicators. Around a third (30,9%) of foreigners visiting Brazil organize their trip on the internet, according to the survey Demanda Turística Internacional de 2010 (2010 International Touristic Demand) carried out by Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas (FIPE). Embratur has marketed a new tool for digital communication intended to contribute to Brazil’s highlighting among international destinations. On Facebook, the application Trip Planner (www. facebook.com/VisitBrasil) displays information on practical aspects of your trip to Brazil. The objective is to create a direct link with the traveler. The new application allows a contact of potential tourists with Brazilian touristic products suppliers. Confederations Cup, happening between June 15 and 30, 2013, will take place in 6 out of the 12 seat cities of 2014 World Cup

Confederations Cup: general rehearsal for the World Cup 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil has already started for the host country. Preparatives are in advanced stage as well as the stadia final building phase. So are the other works which are going to make the access to the games stage easy and tourists’ comings and goings in the cities. The general rehearsal for the big event will be in 2013 already, when the Confederation Cup takes place. The competition, assembling eight national teams between 15 to July 30, will take place in six out the 12 cities receiving the World Cup in the following year. Besides Brazil - the host country, and Spain – the present world champion, the tournament will have representatives of all continents. Mexico, Concacaf’s (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association

Football) champion; Uruguay, champion of Copa America; Italy, Euro Cup’s vice-champion; Japan, Asian champion; and Tahiti, Oceania’s Cup champion, have already assured their places in the competition. It only remains the decision on the African representative, to happen in the beginning of next year, when the champion of the African Nations Cup – to be held between January and February 2013 in South Africa- will be known. Soccer stars like Neymar, from Brazil; Iniesta, from Spain , elected 2012 Euro Cup’s best player; and the contentious Mario Balotelli- from Italy, will exhibit their talents searching to win the Cup on the Brazilian pitches. The major winner of the competition is Brazil herself, holding three titles, including from the two last editions: in 2005, in Germany and in 2009, in South Africa.

Besides ousting Spain’s rule – present world and European champion –, Brazilian mission in the competition is to test the structure being built for the World Cup and its organizational capacity for such great event. The federal capital - Brasilia – will host the opening, on June 15, having the Brazilian national team on the pitch. The great final will take place in the legendary stadium of Maracanã, in the very beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador will also host games. Brasília will host the opening match only. The other seats will host three each one of them. In the first phase Brazil will still play in Fortaleza and Salvador. Although it is not going to host any game, the city of São Paulo – stage for the World Cup opening ceremony – will also play an outstanding role in such competition. The official lottery for the competition games will take place in the city on December 1st, when the first phase matches will be set.


The ball is going to be rolled over in only 12 cities. Football lovers of the whole world will turn their eyes to Brazil between July 12 and 13, 2014, in the towns selected for the games. Nevertheless, for who really intends to get to know the tourist attractions in the country, there is a world of options beyond the official stages of the World Cup. In the beginning of 2012, the Tourism Ministry selected not less than 88

Investiments in labour force and infrastructure Besides the investments that are being made by the cities and the states, the Tourism Ministry recently announced a reinforcement of some R$ 110 million for works on infrastructure in the host cities. New Tourist Information Centres, sign and access works will be set up with such money. Labour force qualification to assist the tourists is also one of the priorities of the Ministry. The body intends to qualify 40 thousand professionals in 117 towns under the Pronatec Copa program. They are free professional courses, all geared to occupations in the tourist trade. Besides Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), there is also English and Spanish training.

A renewed city for the First South America Olympic Games There aren’t missing reasons for 2016 Olympic and Para Olympic Games to be unique. Besides being the first time the event takes place in South America, the elected city - Rio de Janeiro – is the first in the world to be declared Humanity’s Cultural Heritage. The title has been conceded other 18 times, but never a whole city got such acknowledgment. Shouldn’t the landscapes of Cidade Maravilhosa be enough, the preparation started in 2009 and is in accelerated rhythm for the city to be totally renewed to receive the planet’s best athletes and tourists as well as it is possible. The volume of investments in infrastructure works may overtake R$ 30 billion and the main concern is urban mobility. The city will gain public transport

corridors of high capacity, new roads, reform and enlargement of underground and urban trains systems, as well as the conclusion of the Road Arch in the metropolitan region. Tom Jobim International Airport will also undergo improvements to receive the big flow of tourists during the Games. The hotel industry is getting ready and until 2016 the city will approximately have 50 thousand apartments. The port is among the several areas to be redeveloped by the project Porto Maravilha. It is a historical region of the city which is undergoing deep urban interventions with new buildings, hotels and public spaces, besides two museums. Maracanã surroundings, as well as Quinta da Boa Vista, will also undergo improvements. Good news for the cariocas (people from Rio) is that Guanabara Bay will be totally unpolluted.

Structure– The main structures for the games are being built in the region of Barra da Tijuca which will concentrate 20 modalities, corresponding to 56% out of the total. They will be 14 settings in the whole, besides the Olympic Village, which will have 31 buildings of 17 floors each. There will be 3,604 apartments with 10,064 rooms in the whole. The place will also have a training centre added to it. Besides Barra, the legendary state of Maracanã will have four settings. The district of Deodoro will shelter the Radical Park, where cycling competitions will take place, and the Modern Pentatlo Centre. Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games will take place from August 5 to 21, 2016 and the Para Olympics, from September 7 to 18.

According to the international promotion elaborated by the Ministry for Tourism allied to the implementation of a policy with strategic actions geared towards the main issuing destinations, the United Kingdom market is seen by the Brazilian Government as one of the countries selected for the Aquarela program, from Embratur. The tourism minister, Gastão Vieira, is of the opinion that the United Kingdom is an important partner for the Brazilian touristic activity. “It is one of the main issuing markets for the country and is part of the planning priorities for international promotion by the Ministry of Tourism. When following the planning of the last Olympic Games hosts, we had the opportunity of establishing an exchange of projects that will be valuable for the preparation of mega-events which are coming soon”. The minister remembers that the United Kingdom is listed on Plano Aquarela 2020 as one of the main markets of highest priority for Brazilian touristic promotion. “Such ranking is related to the volume of British tourists that visit Brazil annually (149,564 in 2011, according to EMBRATUR’s Statistics Annual Book) and to the political and economic importance of the United Kingdom. And this shows the great potential of growth in the export of tourists to Brazil”.

By commenting the recent launching of the promotional campaign of the Brazilian Government with the theme “The world meets in Brazil. Come to celebrate life”, July this year, in London, the minister Gastão Vieira stresses the importance of such initiative. “We would like to show Brazil as a country of unique culture, but diversified. Good reception, joy and pleasantness o four people are marks o four nation”, he highlights. He also stresses that the Brazilian team wants to learn with the Londoners regarding the item organization and that will take lessons of competence and dedication in the organization of the last Olympic Games and reminds that Brazil waits with wide open arms to host tourists of the whole world. “Come to celebrate life with us”, states. For 2013 the objective of the Ministry for Tourism team is to intensify the actions to accelerate competitivity of some of the main destinations in the country. In the opinion of Minister Gastão Vieira, international promotion actions only are not enough, the implementation of touristic development programs on national routes in order to open room for a regional approach of the national touristic product, thus benefitting the qualification of hospitality tourism, is also necessary.

A potential market in expansion Keeping an eye on the United Kingdom, which presently occupies the second place among the European countries in the item of the markets which mostly spend on international tourism, reaching 36 billion euro in 2011, the Ministry for Tourism team has been trying to show the cultural diversity of Brazil as one of the key elements in the promotional campaigns. It is never enough to remind that the countries of the European continent sent in 2011, 1,6 million tourists to Brazil – around 30% out of the total foreign visitors. Great Britain is an important piece in such context: from 2008 to 2011, Brazil hosted 670 thousand tourists from that country who had leisure as the main reason for the trip. Last year, 38% of the British visitors included our country in their vacation plans in search for leisure. The business and events segment came second, scoring 20% out of the total. Profile – On leisure trips – still according to 2011 survey, sunshine and beach still is the favourite postcard, holding 41% of the preference. Cultural tourism calls attention: 27% of Brits have been to the country in search for attractions and artistic expressions. Brazil – The minister of Tourism, Gastão Vieira, stresses the importance of this activity as development factor, able to generate jobs and improve life quality of Brazilians. “Tourism is a very important factor for job creation. I remind you that Brazil has a vocation to be world leader in Tourism, an activity that may improve life quality of the Brazilian populations”, states. The minister also reminds that through the Ministry for Tourism some R$ 13,2 billion were invested in the last ten years to improve infrastructure in towns of the whole country. Among the accepted projects are construction and enlargement of airports in the main national touristic destinations.

Brazil hosts in 2014 the next edition of the World Cup. Connoisseur of the British passion for soccer, the Brazilian Government has been developing a series of promotion actions for the United Kingdom. In 2016 will be the turn of the Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, when thousands of tourists are expected, not only from Europe, but from other continents also. Conscious of the opportunities generated by those mega-events, Embratur, body responsible for the promotion of the country abroad, is present in this edition of WTM with the aim at narrowing the relationships with the market in the United Kingdom and, at the same time, to promote the destination in the main European issuing markets. In the opinion of Embratur’s president, Flávio Dino, the activities and big sports events may represent an excellent tool for Brazilian tourism growth. “Investment in sports has important reflections on the projection of the country’s image abroad and, thus, therefore, influences the foreign tourists entry, both in the tourist segment and sports”, he evaluates. Embratur’s president adds that presently sports tourism attracts only 1.7% of foreign visitors to Brazil. “To hold mega-events such as the World Cup and the Olympic Games, added to investment in sport, will contribute for the change of such scenery, encouraging the attraction of tourists interested in the sports practice”. The executive officer reminds us that Brazil, besides the natural attraction and the cultural diversity, relies on hospitability as an important factor. Flávio Dino stresses that there were surveys held proving its success. “In the opinion polls held annually with foreign tourists, it may be possible to prove that a big differential is the kindness and interaction capacity of our people”, he explained. Embratur’s president admits that Brazilian tourism still needs to get ahead, but reminds that a whole strategy is on the way to increase the flow of international tourists. “ We have objectives which are permanent challenges for us. Obviously it is impossible to imagine a comparison with tourism of France. They already made tourism before we were an independent country. I also remind you that 83% of the tourists who visit that country are Europeans. Whilst we have conditioning factors and even difficulties with our neighbours of South America. Only now certain ways start to be opened, allowing a further integration. We have long lasting projects, but they are indispensable for us to host more tourists than the Eiffel Tower someday”, he admitted.

Figures depicting growth Business Tourism- Since 2003, Brazil jumped from the 19th position in ICCA’s ranking for the 7th, in 2011. The country registered a growth of 10 % in 2010 to 2011 events (from275 to 304). The number of cities with ICCA’s standard events grew 18% (from 48 to 57). To consolidate the national vocation to hold international events, Embratur invests R$ 1.9 million in the Support to Attraction and Promotion of Events Program. The initiative, published by the Federal Official Press, tries to support the public bodies and charity organizations to attract congresses and international sports events to the country. Promotion – Embratur initiated a program with 14 promotion events for the main international issuing markets, called Goal to Brasil. The events have as focus the promotion of Brazil as destination seat for 2014 World Cup and are directed to agencies, tour operators and opinion makers. The new publicity campaign on the dissemination of Brazilian touristic destinations, however, launched in July, in London, had as novelty the focus on the country’s cultural diversity. International Tourism – The number of international visitors to Brazil increased 5.3% in 2011, by comparison with 2010. In the past, 5.4 million tourists got in the country against 5.1 million in 2010. The increase was pushed by the growth of 10.3% in the number of South Americans who arrived in Brazil — from 2,384,186, in 2010, to 2,628,957 in 2011. The foreign tourists who have been to Brazil in the first semester of this year spent 6% more than those who visited the country in the same period last year.

Brasil Focus on World Cup and Olympic Games to Catch Brits

For years, Britain has been kept in the group of major tourist exporters to Brazil, becoming one of the most important markets for the country. Such history – altogether with other items – classified her as a high priority market for Plano Aquarela 2020, carried out by Instituto Brasileiro de Turismo (Embratur), which guides Brazil’s promotion actions abroad. Last year only, 149.564 Britons visited Brazil, a figure corresponding to 2.75% out of the general entry for international visitors. Such results ranked the country as 11th major tourist exporter in the year 2011. By being considered priority market, Britain is the focus for several promotional actions of Embratur aiming at attracting more tourists by means of calling attention to Brazilian products. To reach such objective, the Institute is present in several work fronts with comprehensive actions in social networks, publicity, international press relations and approach to tour operators and local tourism agents. In the opinion of Marco Lomanto, products and destinations director of Embratur, British market deserves special attention. And so, during and after 2012 Olympic Games several actions were taken in the country. “The focus was and will be the promotion of the seat cities of 2014 FIFA World Cup. As the big events are getting near, we intend to show the country’s potential to host them and the main touristic attractions of the cities which will stage such great sports spectacle”, said the Executive Officer. According to data of the 2011 International Touristic Demand Study, around 80% of those visitors were satisfied with their stay and 91% manifested the intention of returning to the country. “We act in several work fronts. The relationship with the trade, which include road shows, workshops and sales training, has as its goal to provide such public with information regarding Brazilian destinations and, thus, increase the marketing of Brazilian touristic products”, emphasizes the executive officer . He completes: “The relationship with the British press includes assistance to local professionals by rendering varied information on tourism in Brazil”.

Partnerships between public and private sectors Embratur’s Products and Destinations Director, Marco Lomanto, stresses the importance of “the union between the government and the entrepreneurs” during the sports mega events in Brazil. According to him, there was a “tariff agreement on hotel accommodation during the games in London”, he exemplifies. Brazil should host 380 thousand tourists during the sports event, EMBRATUR estimates. The public body also calculates that the estimated investments of US$ 14 billion will provoke a movement of US$ 51.1 billion. The figures are from the Study of Potential Social and Economical Impacts of 2016 Olympic Games on the city of Rio de Janeiro, developed by Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA) for the Ministry of Sports.

As an example, we can quote a tariff agreement for hotels during the Games”.

The program’s last edition, which from now will have another shape, occurred in 2009 and, presently, there are around 500 Expert Agents on Brazil. In the executive officer opinion, the role of the tour operators and the agents suffered two impacts alongside the decade. It was globally hit by the world economic situation – given the international crisis, mainly in Europe and, adding to it, the fact that the market underwent, recently, by a process of technology incorporation, breaking the concept of client/ travel agent. “Such situation hit hard the local markets. The European, to organize either a vacation trip or a week-end in Europe, plans alone his/her trip, books hotels and buys tickets. The client who is going to take a long distance trip is more dependent. The European coming to Brazil, for instance, does not know our country, becoming more dependent on the agent”, he presupposes. According to him, within such context,

Embratur stresses the agents functions. “For us , the travel agents network is very important, because it offers further assurance to the client. More and more the travel agent has the role of selling a place he/her already knows, he has already been to. So, the assurance the agent gives, besides the agreement, is a personal one, from experience”, he ponders. Besides the reformulation of the “Agentes Especialistas em Brasil”program, theyear of 2013 also seems to be marked by the return of the Brazilian Tourism Offices Brasileiros de Turismo (EBTs), which stopped to work in June 2011. I fev everything goes right, Embratur’s expectations are for them to resume their activities until the end of the first term next year. “Besides the 10 ETBs we already had, we incorporated one in Holland, one more in the United States and another in South America”, states Pedroso.

EBTs back in 2013 The program “Agentes Especialistas em Brasil” ( Expert Agents on Brazil) will follow a new shape next year. “We are going to initiate a process to renew our group of experts by means of a program that is going to have three stages: present, when they are goig to take part on some workshop or event; one virtual, through phone-conference ; and a third phase constituted by a visit to Brazil. With this better knowledge of Brazilian destinations and specific details of Brazil, such travel agent will have much more assurance to sell and offer to the client the destinations of our country”, clarifies Marcelo Pedroso. Such Embratur’s action was initiated in 2006, having as pilot countries Portugal and Spain. From 2007, there were online courses in other European, South American and North American countries. Professionals of countries considered to be “emergent markets”, such as Finland,

It is a challenging market”, he evaluates. The responsible bodies for touristic promotion in Brazil and in the United Kingdom are going to exchange experiences as seats of the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games. The partnership was signed during a meeting held between the director of International Markets of Embratur, Marcelo Pedroso, and the director of International Markets of VisitBritain, Keith Beecham. “Our objective, by signing this new agreement, is to narrow the relationship with the VisitBritain to learn with them the best experiences as seat for the Olympic and ParaOlympic in London concerning publicity about the country as touristic destination”, explained Pedroso. The Embratur director stressed that one of the initiatives of the new partnership is to hold an event in which VisitBritain will show their main learning when holding the Olympic Games. “To learn with London’s experience will be extremely important for Brazil to empower its

As well as the country itself, the gastronomy found in Brazil results from a big miscegenation. The diversity does not allow the definition of only one characteristic of the Brazilian culinary, which is a true mix of traditions, native ingredients and others introduced by the colonizers and immigrants along the years. Strong flavours, remarkable, unusual mixes and a great variety are some of the things that may be found in the local dishes. “Brazil may be considered a Latin American culinary pole, genuine for its flavours offers and for ingredients coming from her native land and historical colonization”, explains the chef Luiz Barbosa, from Camauê Restaurant. For him, the fact of having roots linked to the culinary of other countries of the Asian, European and African continents makes Brazilian cuisine very rich. Immigrants and colonizers of several countries introduced dishes and ingredients which, together with the raw materials found in Brazil, started to shape the country’s gastronomy. Even with such rich variety, Barbosa believes that there is still much to be discovered. Brazil is a

true laboratory for the chefs’ creativity, because everyday new ingredients appear as well as new combination possibilities. “Being Brazil such a large country, we haven’t managed to unveil all the rich varieties of all regions”, states Barbosa. “It is even easy to organize menus based upon our culinary. It is not easy to find a country with so many rich varieties of fruits, for example. Here we have copoasu, açaí palm, soursop and mango, for instance, which are national flavours and make difference on a menu”, completes. To join fruits, herbs, olive oil and vegetables found in Brazil to make a dish or even a menu is na invitation to creativity. In the Camauê restaurant, Barbosa uses a bit of local Indian culture, regional flavours, tradition of the dishes and from the culinary typical of the mills farms. “We joined the essence of homemade food and regional dishes, both from the mountains and the coast of Brazil. We also put traces of French gastronomy to give charm and sophistication to some dishes such as Caçarola de Coelho (Rabbit Cassoulet with mushrooms sauce) and Cow’s rib with red wine and fine herbs sauce”, exemplifies the chef, remembering that one of the masterpiece of the restaurant is escondidinho de mandioquinha (manioc) with duck.

Departures happen at 9:50 p.m. from Heathrow airport, and arrivals happen at 05:20 a.m. During Brazilian Summer time, schedules change to 9:25 p.m for departures and arrivals happen at 07:05 a.m. The other way round - São Paulo-London -, flights are also taken daily with departures at 4:15 p.m. from São Paulo’s capital. The route is operated on a Boeing 747-400. British Airways still counts on frequencies departing from London to Rio de Janeiro, except for Tuesdays. TAP: For international visitors interested in getting to know Brazil, TAP counts on flights departing from Lisbon (Portugal) to ten Brazilian cities.
