Who is
Meghan Geraghty? I am currently studying BA Product Design. I always keep a busy schedule and thrive off of being social. I am part of the NTU Thai Boxing society and outside of university I am always finding ways to keep busy f rom organising events with f riends to going for hikes and spending time in the countryside. As a designer, I feel every experience is important, which is why I am always willing to try new things. To design the best products you must be willing to always learn and meet new people.

Designing for Production Brand Extension
Future of Mobile Communications
What do you think the role of a designer is? As a designer, I feel we should design with the future in mind. The role of a designer should always change over time, otherwise, no progress will be made, however, I will always agree with author Mike Monteiro: “It’s not enough to disrupt a thing, you have to disrupt it the right way. You have to design the right thing.” — Mike Monteiro Design is becoming a more thoughtful and sustainable process. The quote embodies the idea of this, you can’t just design something for the sake of it. It has to have a purpose. Otherwise it could have a negative effect. Overall, as designers, I feel we need to design to promote a sustainable way of living. Designing products is a universal language that affects everyone and therefore means we have to be responsible and considerate of what message we are portraying. Photo by Tyler Lastovich from Pexels
Who are you as a designer?
The answer to this question will always change, as a designer I know my role will never be the same. Like previously said it’s the only way the world can progress. I have only just started to explore my passions within design. I believe if you wish to design successfully you must realise you will always be the student, the learning never ends. To me, the idea of this is exciting. As it stands I am a designer who tries to be conscious of her impact. As a person, I always wish to make people happy and be inclusive, this shows through my design work and will always fuel who I am as a designer.

What are your inspirations?
Photo by Sebastian Palomino from Pexels
As a designer, I find inspiration in everything. I believe life experiences impact design and my outlook on design. I have lived in multiple places over the years, which has impacted my designs. I have lived in the Southern Countryside, an Essex Town, Northumberland and now in Nottingham city centre. Being exposed to those different areas give me a different perspective to other designers.
In terms of inspiration, I am inspired by people. I am an open person and thrive off people around me, my confidence stems f rom my fascination of how different everyone is. We design for all sorts of demographics and I feel it is important to understand those demographics well.

In terms of designers, Cecilie Manz and Alexander Schul have impacted me significantly. I used Cecilie Manz as inspiration for Stack, a portable desk tidy design for creative professionals. I like the simple style of design Manz has and her approach towards design. Her designs capture the eye of any audience, as Manz says: “My work has always revolved around simplicity, the process of working toward a pure, aesthetic object.”

- Cecilie Manz I hope to design products that embody this idea, having a pure product in my eyes is where aesthetics and functionality should compliment each other. I favour the materials Alexander Schul has used, specifically in his sustainable products line (lamp, Chair and side table). His aim is inspiring, designing a universal and practical product with it’s impact in mind. Schul has kept aesthetics in mind too, capturing the eye of many potential clients. I find this inspiring and I hope to do the same in my work. Alexander Schul
What impacts have your second year projects made?
Designing for production Thisprojectis where I designed STACK . Cecilie Manz impacted my outcome, the way she works is inspiring and has changed my outlook this year on how to approach new projects - “The task or project itself often holds the key to inspiration; ideas don’t come f rom waiting but f rom leg-work, drafting and trails.” - Cecilie Manz Within this project, I struggled with designers block. I tend to rush my research, which would stop me f rom successfully thinking of ideas. I realised I didn't put in the “leg-work”. I now go back into my research, to give myself a new boost of creativity.

Brand Extension -

This project with KitKat differed to all my previous projects and truly tested my skills as a designer. I say this because we had to design an experience for the users. It pushed my knowledge of what my users liked and I was proved wrong at the conceptr eview,my ball pit concpet was chosen instead. However, it made me realise my role as a designer, it is not to design for myself but for others.

Working with the Consultancy Matter was eneficial. This was a group project and our3 b concepts were designed for Backpackers of 3 age ranges. We designed them for Airbnb, with the safety of the users in mind.
Having Airbnb as the branding for the project was successful. Research into the brand showed how sustainable they were becoming and how much the company cares about it’s users.
It embodied the type of design we wished to achieve. The slogan “belong anywhere” not only steers their company but our family of products too.
What are your plans for the future?
The future is never set in stone, however, as it stands after university I wish to travel. Seeing new cultures and meeting new people is crucial for me as a designer, I feel it will allow me to grow and have a new outlook on design. There are so many design styles f rom Scandinavian to Japanese and I wish to see all first hand. Having a better insight is my only wish for the future, I am excited for the next few years.
