Hello “It’s not that I can’t, it’s that I haven’t learnt how to yet” My name is Meghan,

Skills -

I currently study BA Product Design at Nottingham Trent University.

• Team-worker

I am still finding myself as a designer because of this I am always willing to learn and try new things. Especially when it comes to broadening my skill set in Design.

• Creative Thinker

Being practical and hands on is crucial for me, any opportunity to get into the workshop is jumped on. I love to work with all types of materials, always being open to being shown new processes.

• Adobe software, such as, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Outside of my degree I always keep busy, from Muay Thai training to organising events with friends! I love to bring joy to people and my degree is another outlet for me to do so, through products.

• Problem Solver

• Solid-works Skills • Modelling Skills • Drawing Skills

Contents This Portfolio is a collection of my work ever since I grew an interest in Product design, from university briefs to an independant project I took on during my A-levels.

Future of Mobile Communication Brief Considering future macro trends and one of the consumer profiles outlined, the brief asks you to design a smart phone for the year 2025. This project was a group project, we had to produce three final concepts for the brief given. Our profile choice was Active/Explorer. Specifically Backpackers. I am showing the first concept designed for 18-24 Year old Backpackers, the next page is showing how it works.

The front camera reads y eye, if it is you it allows yo open the device.

The device is attached to your keys. Blends in and harder to steal.

Specialised apps are there to help you and you can text/call.

UNLOCK Snapshot of the design process undergone... • Phones are at risk of being stolen. • Could we design something that doesn’t look like a phone?

Too bulky

• This age range are less prepared to travel, how could we help? Engraving on the front? Bigger section for the electronics?

The device can be attached to keys/the bag etc. making the where abouts of the phone easier.

There are 3 unique apps on this phone This is an index app, a checklist so the user knows what they should take.

This app helps the user with Languages. It gives them sentence starters.

This app gives the user alerts about the area. it also tells them about the country (rules to follow etc..)

the device to more access to nd the camera.

Our outcome is our product ‘Unlock’. This device is a smart phone that doesn’t look like a smart phone so there’s less chance of it being stolen. The ideal way to store it being on a key-chain. There’s two ways to use this product the first being in its compact form which is one handed and the second way is using the retina scanner to unlock the phone, allowing you to get the full screen. After modelling we decided to add a protective shell to the device. To make it more robust

The screen can roll out because of new roller-ball OLED technology. The device is well-suited to every scenario.

Toy Story

BriefTo design a wooden toy for John Lewis. The products will be manufactured by hand or with basic machinery, in Latvia, so the design needs to be simple and utilise material well. The production of the design needs to be communicated clearly and only use traditional manufacturing techniques. The finished item must fit within a box 300 x 300 x 200mm to reduce shipping costs.

Outcome The final product is known as “Blockies They are customizable toys for children aged 5 - 10 years old. The are simplistic and last long within the age group. This product can help create a bond with parent and child, as they can both make the characters together. It helps create an emotional connection with the product itself.

How to customize -

1

The user starts with whatever character they purchase, they can also purchase other characters and attachments

2

3

They can change any type of block anytime they want

4

Depending on the age they may need their parents to help them. which is good for Parent, child bonding!

Final Model This was one of my favourite models to create. This is because I had to take time with the Designing and final make.

Users say it has a play effect when picked up, the weight of the product is just right!

5

Here is the new character!

The final products will be made out of Beech.

Made from Chemiwood, it gives it a realistic feel.

To make the specific details used a dremel drill, it truly allowed me to bring my design to life!

Storage Wars Original brief To design a decorative storage or organisational product. Successful products will identify customer storage needs whilst being aesthetic. Focus after research -

PODZ -

These products are a unique storage system. They each fully customizable.

With the interchangeable sections a child could h buy different attachments and change the style co making the product simplistic for the user, hopefu

Leaving the house within a growing family can be stressful, how can I reduce this with a storage product in the entrance?

Removing the drawer to change the function/appearance

The images above depict how the product can be chopped and changed buy the user to suit their needs. The smallest changes can make the product fit any trend, making it timeless. The product can look natural with a wooden front face or the user can select different front faces, giving them multiple options. The can also have all sorts of attachments such as hooks for coats and different types of drawers/baskets. User feedback was positive when they used the model, it was just the right size and the fact they could customize it made the product more appealing. If this was developed further their could be different storage units and sizes!

Delight in Light

Brief Deadgood would like you to design and develop a pendant Light by “challenging” the way they are made, used or it’s function to create a sustainable product that has commercial appeal. Next Steps The research I carried out highlighted Deadgood has minimal cocktail bar clients, I felt this was a market they could utilize. Further research led me to Be At One Bar. It is a fun and visual bar, I felt it embodied some of Deadgoods visual aspects.

ILLUME is the new light collection inspired by the Cocktail Bar Culture, it embodies the meaning of a calm and exciting environment. The main material for this product is Aluminium, ensuring the product has a sustainable aspect as well as being lightweight for transport. The Aluminium Components will be extruded, limiting waste material and impacting the environment less when Manufacturing. Sustainability was the main consideration for this lamp, hence why Cotton fabric has been used for the cable and Glass for the middle component. The Glass will be Sandblasted, this creates an opaque, cloudy look allowing a glow to seep through the middle. Light will also travel through the Aluminium Component. The product will produce two types of light which are warm and direct, Illuminating the room in two different forms. ILLUME captures the “Relaxing Fun environment you can experience in a Cocktail Bar.

Independant Project As an A-level student I decided to pursue Product Design, the place where I studied did not run the course. So I independently studied Product Design on top of my other A-levels. The technology department were very supportive of this and I owe them a great thanks, they truly made me the designer I am today. My Year 13 project is one of my favourite projects, this is because I made a fully functional product that I Designed.

Brief Young people in the UK are being impacted by their inactive lifestyles. A rise in gaming, TV watching and use of Mobiles is leading to major health problems, due to less exercise. A wider problem is mobiles are always running out of battery, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find charging points especially in none urban areas. Thus, a device needs to be designed to give an enjoyable source of recreational activity whilst being able to also charges mobile phones.

The final product is a Low-rider bike which charges a phone using kinetic energy
