NATURAL ENERGY

D&AD: Purdey’s (Main Brief) Packaging Promotion

Brief

Evaluation

Repackage Purdey’s Rejuvenate and extend its range to include one new product - Purdey’s Natural Energy.

Taking the concept of sharing the secret to a whole new level. Working with the idea of Purdey’s being a secret potion with hidden ingredients gave me the idea of a potion bottle shape with a very minimal design.

With the world increasingly looking for products that work in harmony with our bodies, it’s time for Purdey’s, in its own way, to share its secret more broadly. Your challenge is to create packaging designs which enable this to happen, without losing the curiosity of the brand

I really enjoyed this brief. I’ chose it because I’ve never designed packaging before and was really pleasantly suprised. I learnt how to create 3D bottle shapes in illustrator and became interested in what different shapes I could create and how that would affect the overall design, how people interact with it and can make a simple design really stand out. It’s a refreshing change to working on 2d designs.

YCN: Bear (Collaborative) Cereal Backs.

Brief

Evaluation

Design new backs for Bear Alphabites ceral boxes. These should engage children for several breakfast sittings, not talk down to them and replace the need for toys inside the box.

Working with someone can be really great and this brief made me realise that. You just have to make sure that you really get the idea down and you both agree on it so you don’t stray from it and fall out. Also, make sure you do your fair share of the work because it’s meant to spreed things up working together, not slow things down. I have also never designed anything aimed at children before so I found that really challenging and have realised that I don’t really want to design for kids in the future as it doesn’t fit my design asthetic.

Hypnowave presents... A3 Gig poster.

Brief

Evaluation

Create an A3 gig poster for a New/No Wave gig at Wharf Chambers in Leeds. Band Names plus short discription, Venue, Date and entry fee must included along with the wharf chambers members only blurb. Everything else your call.

I create quite a lot of gig/event posters for both Wharf Chambers and Hypnowave Records so I wanted to do something I’d never done before with this brief. I’m used to using standard fonts or hand drawing type so I decided to try manipulating type instead. I’m happy with the design and feel the asthetic really does translate ‘wave’ with the combination of type and the sea blue colour used. It’s taught me that when you’re designing for something you like, and you try something new then you produce a better outcome.

Hypnowave: Sissy Hex Band logo Merch Mock ups

Brief

Evaluation

Create a logo for new band Sissy Hex that fits the music they play. The band is made up of 3 members of previous band Etai Keshiki. We want to see what this logo would look like on Merch.

For this brief, although I’ve seen the band on a few occasions, I read some reviews as well as the description they gave themselves. Making an asthetic fit a sound was new so listening to their music to get some ideas was interesting. Their music is quite dark and harsh yet minimal so that’s the look I tried to convey with my design. I wanted something that was quite compact and within a shape so that it could be placed onto things and sit well. The hexagon is a play on the band name including ‘hex’.

That Charity Art Exhibition 3 2/3 colour screen prints Drinks Coasters.

Brief

Evaluation

Self initiated. The idea for the exhibition was to get a group of creatives together and put up some of their work together in a space - Sela Bar, Leeds. It was asked for us to create something that could be duplicated and sold to raise money for a charity we’d decide on together as well as to help us get our work seen and exhibited.

I decided to create screen prints as they’re usually created in batches at a time and sell for a reasonable amount of money. The experience of creating designs and helping to put together an exhibition toraise money was a completely new and wonderful experience for me. It taught me a lot about time management and what goes into making something like that happen. It’s also helped me realise how much effort has to go in to get your work seen and appreciated by people. This brief taught me that whilst it’s really enjoyable creating designs that you like, it doesn’t mean that everyone else will like what you’ve done and it’s really difficult to make people care at all or understand the work that’s gone in.

YORKSHIRE TRANS SUPPORT NETWORK

Yorkshire Trans Support Network Network Logo A3 poster A6 Flyer

Brief

Evaluation

Create a logo, A3 poster and A6 double sided flyer for Yorkshre Transgender support network based within Yorkshire Mesmac. YTSN is a new network put in place to support trans people throughout the Yorkshire area. We’re looking for a proffesional yet nonthreatening design asthetic for the network.

Because this is for a network that I feel is a very important and worthy thing to have in place I was really happy when asked to do this brief. I wanted to link in to Mesmac using asthetics so I used the purple that they do in their logo. For this logo I incorporated the transgender symbol and the name of the network. This brief taught me how you sometimes have to change your design to accomodate for the content that needs to fit within it and this can be really challenging at times, but there’s a lot of different things you can do to make it work, it’s just a case of trial and error as well as learning these methods.

Mesmac Sexual Health Project A range of leaflets

Brief

Evaluation

Create 6 leaflets aimed at gay males to raise awareness of sexual transmitted diseases including how they’re passed on and what can be done to prevent them.

After I completed the YTSN brief I was contacted by Y orkshire Mesmac to create the leaflets for their Sexual Health Project. It was a different person running this project and this was the brief that made me aware of what it’s like to work for a bad client. I learnt that you always have to meet them halfway in order to make the client happy, but also produce work you’re happy to put out as your own. While there are things about the finished product I would personally have done differently as a designer you’re never really creating the thing for yourself but for others so you have to take that into consideration.

99 Designs: Polaris Pyramid Logo

Brief

Evaluation

Create a logo for make up brand ‘Polaris Pyramid’.

This was a brief that made me aware of how important it is to be careful of the kind of briefs you select to do. Because I was given next to know information about the brand and what was wanted it was left really open. It turns out that the woman who ran this brief didn’t have a clue what she wanted, but it wasn’t any of the designs that were submitted to her. The suggestions she was given were really bad design decisions which made me question whether she wanted a designer, or just someone who would create the really bad idea for a logo she had in her own head. Clearly my design didn’t get anywhere but it did make me realise that I enjoy creating logos and am really intereted in branding.
