The Renaissance Dream Rêver à la Renaissance

The involving and fascinating topic of dreaming is of particular significance both in ancient mythology and in the Renaissance cultural setting, as demonstrated by its widespread occurrence in the visual arts and, in particular, in works of religious nature, or focused in the rediscovery of ancient myths. The revelation of a wholly interior world governed by different rules - ranging from the eccentric to the unlikely and the unreal - set artists a real challenge, to which they rose in a myriad different yet equally fascinating ways. The exhibition, soon to be exported to the Musée du Luxembourg of Paris, displays works that reveal the manifestation of Dream’s different worlds, places where daily life is transfigured and its erotic dimension revealed. For the very first time Raphael's Vision of a Knight, from the National Gallery of London, and Correggio's Venus and Cupid with a Satyr, from the Louvre, are shown in Florence, joined by Heironymus Bosch's Hermit Saints, from the Doge's Palace in Venice. The dream scenes here displayed include nightmares, inhabited by the Devil as Separator, the great Transgressor and bringer of bad dreams. He appears when day gives up its sovereignty and the darker side of things appear. The exhibition is divided into several sections: Night, represented in all its complex symbology and containing many sculptures and paintings based on Michelangelo’s Night, which he sculpted in the New Sacristy for Julius de’ Medici’s funerary monument;

Sculptor and architect Brunelleschi was born in Florence in 1377, He is famous for the daring and original ideas behind his projects and for the way in which he harmoniously re-elaborated the forms of classical architecture according to the new spirit of his age. Fiesole is one of the few places just outside Florence that most people want to visit when they are here. Although it is particularly beautiful in summer it is a delightful place to visit at any other time of the year as it offers fascinating monuments, good restaurants and wonderful views. Its position however was always an attractive one, especially its sunny slopes rising up from Florence, protected by the mountains at the rear.

The story of Giampiero Alcozer reads like a fairy tale: born in rome but Florentine by choice – and with a surname that dates back to the Arab and Spanish domination - he grew up in Africa, where he learned the craft of carving ebony and ivory from a Cameroon craftsman, who once told him "Alcozer thou shalt be king Olzac, bestowing charm, moulding jewellery of rare beauty, thou shalt use metals that the ancient civilization first came to know, thou shalt reap the fruits and precious woods that the rocks hold and the tides of the seas keep safe" and he immediately realised what he wanted to do as an adult. Just few exams short of his Political Science degree, he decided not to follow in his family's footsteps but began to create jewellery - his true passion - transforming the family garage into a workshop specialising in the creation of pins and other ornaments. His creations sold well at the local weekend markets and the demand for them increased, resulting in the hiring of his first employee. In 1994 he founded the jewellery brand that carries his name. Mr Alcozer, can you tell us about your creative career and artistic inspirations? The past has always wielded a strong influence on my collections; I was attracted to the idea of putting new vitality into long forgotten objects and styles by travelling on a journey that went back into time, as well as by digging into my grandmother's trunk or designing ornaments that mix reality with a strong dose of fantasy. My designs are taken from Renaissance heraldic shields, come from the world of fairy tales or 1800’s baubles, while at times they give a feeling of 1940’s USA vintage. What is the concept behind your brand and how do you create your jewels? The fundamental idea is to create luxury costume jewellery using metal and semi-precious stones, crystals

What most characterises your collections? "Classic", my first collection, is a line that is as rich as the energy of my staff. This sense of uniqueness also characterises the "Unic" line, where every jewel has the same effect as a valuable painting in the hearts of women. My latest collection is dedicated to insects, especially newborn insects. I try to put everything I do in a contemporary setting, without losing sight of the quality/price ratio. Certainly the creative unknown offers Alcozer a challenge to catch the shapes and shades of a pure mind and takes us back to the moment when a dark-skinned man predicted that a child would become king Olzac "the one who declares his love by giving life to his creations"

Brunelleschi's Florence Филиппо Брунеллески

Sculptor and architect was born in Florence in 1377 and died in 1446. He is famous for the daring and original ideas behind his projects and for the way in which he harmoniously re-elaborated the forms of classical architecture according to the new spirit of his age. He was trained as a sculptor and goldsmith in one of the typical Florentine workshops. In 1401 he made himself known by winning the competition for the second door of Baptistery "ex aequo" with Lorenzo Ghiberti, who was in fact commissioned to carry out the work. Brunelleschi probably spent the next three years in Rome studying sculpture and architecture with his friend Donatello. From 1409 onwards, he worked on the construction of Santa Maria del Fiore and was immediately attracted by the problem of the cupola. This construction, took most of his life and formed the basis of Renaissance architecture. Brunelleschi also worked on the Spedale degli Innocenti, the Old Sacristy at San Lorenzo, the reconstruction of San Lorenzo, the Pazzi Chapel in the Cloisters of Santa Croce, and on the design for Santo Spirito, completely renewing the appearance of the medieval city. When he died he was buried in Santa Maria del Fiore though his tomb, unknown for centuries, was not discovered until 1972.

The construction of the cupola of the Cathedral was one of the most imposing tasks of the Renaissance, it kept the Florentines engaged in debates and competitions for years but, once it was completed, thanks to the genius of Filippo Brunelleschi, it became the symbol of the city itself and the new, revolutionary Renaissance architecture. Arnolfo's project for Santa Maria del Fiore, which became even more imposing with Francesco Talenti's modifications, had left the basilica with an enormous problem, that of closing the chancel with a roof. Arnolfo's project certainly included a cupola, but a low one, similar to some of the Byzantine-type spherical coverings that can still be seen today in southern Italy. In the end, the cathedral was so enormous that the usual methods of fixed scaffolding from the ground could not be used. After all, it seemed quite impossible to roof over a space of

45,5 metres in diameter without some sort of reinforcement. Opera del Duomo announced a competition for the project of a cupola with the following requisites: it had to be octagonal, measure 46 metres in diameter at the base, be built without scaffolding and appear to be at least double in size. The competition was held in 1418 and Brunelleschi won it outright, Brunelleschi started the construction in 1420 and spent the rest of his life working on it, although in the meantime he did design other monuments that were to be a basic part of the profile of Renaissance Florence. The final structure that he elaborated and completed consisted in a double cupola of brick, laid herring-bone fashion, 91 metres high, completely self-supporting and based on an unusual system of flying rather than fixed centerings. The "Cupolone" was completed in 1434. Two years later the lantern was placed in position (taking it from 91 to 114,5 metres in total height), while the four tribunes occupying the spaces created by the projections in the octagon of the apse were carried out in 1438. The decorations in the lantern were finished by 1446, when the great architect was on his deathbed. The finishing touches included the application of the decorations in the lantern (1461) and the positioning of the great copper sphere on the top (1474). Cast in Verrocchio's workshop and raised up thanks to a machine that was built with the help of Leonardo da Vinci, the ball fell off after being struck by lightning on July 17th 1600 and was replaced two years later by a larger one. A marble plaque commemorating the event is still visible on the paving in the square behind the Cathedral.

Santissima Annunziata & Ospedale degli Innocenti Ospedale degli Innocenti was the first institution of its kind in Europe (1419). It was created to take care of and bring up orphans and abandoned children as well as give them a trade. The Hospital was built during the Repubblica Fiorentina, financed by the Arte della Lana, by Filippo Brunelleschi, who carried out a harmonic and rational example of hospital architecture which also included cloisters, porticos, refectories, dormitories, infirmaries and nurseries. When it was restored after the flood in 1966 an attempt was made to show more of the 15th century structures. On the left of the portico one can see an inscription above a small closed window, decorated by two puttos. It is there as a reminder of the “wheel”, which functioned until 1875, where mothers placed their unwanted babies when they were unable to bring them up. Today the surname “Degli Innocenti”, in its various forms, can still be said to have originated from here. The loggia above the portico (once the children’s sitting room) can be reached from the pretty central courtyard below. Today it contains a small museum of works of art gathered together over the centuries thanks to bequests and donations, most of them unfortunately dispersed in the 19th century. It contains detached frescoes and works by Luca della Robbia, Sandro Botticelli, Piero di Cosimo and here one can admire the splendid Adoration of the Shepherds by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the teacher of Michelangelo (1488), where the artist painted - as was his habit - a series of historical portraits among the crowd surrounding the Child: merchants from the Arte della Seta, attendants and benefactors of the hospital. Once outside the Innocenti, one should take Via dei Fibbiai where one can find the Rotunda of Santa Maria degli Angeli (1433), the unfinished work of Brunelleschi, that was rediscovered and restored during this century.

The Pazzi Chapel Considered to be one of the masterpieces of Renaissance architecture, The Pazzi Chapel is located in the "first cloister" of the Basilica di Santa Croce. Though funds for the chapel were assembled in 1429 by Andrea Pazzi, head of the Pazzi family, whose wealth was second only to the Medici, construction did not begin until about 1441. The chapel was completed in the 1460s, almost two decades after the death of the architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, himself. The main purpose of the building was obviously for the teaching of monks and other religious purposes. However, a suspected ulterior motive was for the Pazzi family to make a mark on the city of Florence Italy, to show their wealth and power in Renaissance era Italy. The fact that the city was at war with a neighboring city at the time and still acquired the funds to build this chapel showed the importance it had to the Pazzi family and the people of Florence. Formerly considered a work of Filippo Brunelleschi, it is now thought that he was responsible for the plan, which is based on simple geometrical forms, the square and the circle, but not for the building's execution and detailing. A façade that he had begun, and of which only the lower register can be seen, was partially obscured by the addition of a porch. The main inspiration for this piece was the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria Novella in Florence Italy.

The size of the chapel was predetermined by existing walls, creating an unusual situation, however, where the space was not square as in the Old Sacristy, which was the model for this building, but rectangular and transept-like and thus in contradistinction to the square, axially-placed altar. Despite this, and its complex history, the building gives us insight into the ambitions of Renaissance architects in their struggle to bring coherence to the architectural language of columns, pilasters, arches and vaults. Between the pilasters in the transept there are tall, blank, round headed panels and, above them, roundels, common Renaissance decorative motifs. The architectural elements of the interior are all in pietra serena (English: "serene stone"). The building also used bearing masonry in its construction, which is mason units or concrete blocks with lime and man made adhesives to stick them together. As to the architect, scholars argue that it could have been either the work of Giuliano da Maiano or Michelozzo. The rondi of the seated Apostles are by Luca della Robbia, who also did the terracotta decorations in the cupola of the porch. It has been suggested that the roundels of the Evangelists may have been the work of Donatello.

Brunelleschi carried out the Medici Church of San Lorenzo by enlarging a mediaeval church consecrated by St. Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan in 393. The interior exemplifies Renaissance religious architecture and contains many important works of art, among them two pulpits in bronze by Donatello and the Old Sacristy by Brunelleschi. The church became a Medici family sepulchre because all the first Medicis were buried there. The New Sacristy contains four very important Medici sepulchres designed by Michelangelo in andcompleted by Vasari. The low entrance crypt inside the Medici Chapels leads up to the octagonal Chapel of the Princes, started in 1604. The huge room is characterised by its unusual walls that are faced with various polychrome marbles, hard stones, precious stones and gilded bronzes. Michelangelo carried also out the elegant Medici Laurentian Library, vestibule and reading room.

Fratelli Traversari Daniele and Letizia are the fourth generation of the family Traversari devoted, with rare craftsmanship, to the art of creating mosaics. "Our great-grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s workshop was in his house. At that time his specialisation was the creation of refined costume jewelry, objects which are still in our production." From generation to generation the Traversari have guarded secrets and techniques that no school can teach. A tradition began in the end of the Nineteenth century. Three are the craft techniques used to carry out the famous artistic masterpieces: mosaic with cut Murano glass, micromosaic with Murano glass canes and Florentine mosaic in natural semi-precious stones. In the first, the glass tesserae are handshaped, one by one, then laid on the supports; in the second, the glass is reduced into rods of different thickness, and their length is tens of meters. Carteria Tassotti Carteria Tassotti is in Bassano del Grappa, a few miles from Venice, land of great tradition in the art of printing where since the early XVI cent. were active famous printers. The Remondini publishing industry practiced this noble art in Bassano from 1657 until 1861, being praised by historians as the largest in Europe in 1750. Remondini produced popular prints, books, paper stacks and woodcut decorated cards, also known in the XX century as Carta Varese. In 1957 Giorgio Tassotti started up the Carteria Tassotti re-proposing the ancient Remondini catalogue of artistic prints earlier acquired by the Civical Museum of Bassano. Many of these cards are facsimile of the antique originals and over the years the catalog of Grafiche Tassotti has being updating its styles with polychrome art proposals inspired by the past proposing today more than 2000 articles. Studio Galleria Romanelli Since 1860 By visiting the Galleria Romanelli one can touch and admire the most illustrious history in all its splendour. The building was born as a church in the Sixteenth century, but Lorenzo Bartolini, famous sculptor and great portraitist of the most important personalities of the Nineteenth century, later turned it into a spectacular sculpture atelier. On the ground floor, the atelier was once dusty and noisy, crowded with sculptors, while the more intimate above floor had served both as a parlour and a showroom. During the centuries, royal families, nobles, politicians and artists have been received here, including Napoleon Bonaparte’s family and the great musician Rossini. Among the Bartolini’s sculptures still treasured in the Gallery, one can admire the Nymph of the Scorpion (1837) praised by Baudelaire. His pupil Pasquale Romanelli, author of the statue of Francesco Ferrucci (1847, Uffizi courtyard), is the third great-grandfather of siblings Rubina and Raffaello Romanelli, who are now carrying on the glorious tradition. Pasquale was in fact Bartolini’s successor: he completed the unfinished works of his master and took the direction of the famous atelier becoming a well- known sculptor himself. In 1860, he also founded the Galleria on the riverside. Since then, every generation of Romanelli has given birth to a master sculptor. Nowadays Gallery and Sculpture Atelier are joined, and sculptor Raffaello works here achieving the top of this challenging art. The Gallery displays fine sculptures in plaster, bronze and marble. While Raffaello works in the next - door Atelier, mainly on commission. He sculpts from life, using the most valuable and antique techniques, that not many people can still master. His guests pose here for a portrait bust, for just two or three days: a precious and enjoyable time in which the person becomes protagonist of history. Interestingly, posing for a sculpture is not as boring as for a painted portrait: the best result is actually reached when the model chats with the artist, helping him capture the person’s true essence. The process that leads the artist to finish the work, that is the passage from clay to either plaster, bronze or marble, lasts a few weeks, until the bust is delivered to the person’s home. The portrayed ones are always satisfied and touched by the final result. The Gallery staff organises guided tours to famous artworks combined with sculpture lessons (both week days and week ends): a real privilege for those willing to approach or to learn this fascinating, ancient and prestigious art.

300 years after his death, the Uffizi Gallery opens an exhibition entirely dedicated to the Grand Prince Ferdinando II de' Medici (1663-1713), one of the greatest collectors and patrons of the arts in the history of the Medicis. The son of Cosimo III and of Marguerite-Louise d'Orléans, Ferdinando had a deep interest in music and in the visual arts, from a very early age. The eight sections of the exhibit show the complexity of his interests and his innovative approach, which led to Florence the main musicians and artists of his era (end of the 17th c.-early 18th c.). Springtime of the Renaissance The exhibition proposes to illustrate, in theme-based sections, the origin of what is still known today as the "miracle" of the Renaissance in Florence, doing so principally through masterpieces of sculpture, the branch of figurative art in which that new season first saw the light of day. Thus, arranged around the city's absolute symbol – the wooden model of Brunelleschi's Cupola for Santa Maria del Fiore – the exhibition offers a retrospective of sculpture that was also to have a crucial impact on the development of the other figurative arts. The non-profit Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco Life Beyond Tourism has opened its recently restored headquarters: Palazzo Coppini, now international meeting and study center. Restored Works of the Bargello Museum With the opening of Palazzo Strozzi’s exhibit dedicated to the early Renaissance, the Bargello National Museum shows some of its important works, recently restored and all dating around the 14th and 15th centuries. Partners of the initiative, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, art restoration leader, and “Friends of Florence”, non-profit organization for the enhancement of the local cultural heritage. Panels and videos in the rooms explain to the public all the phases of the restorations and the collection, that includes a FrenchFlemish tapestry from the Carrand Collection; French ivory Mirror Cases; jewellery and enamels and a high relief in polychrome terracotta by Dello Delli, portraying the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels. Baroque Ivories from the Courts of Europe From the mid-16th century the European courts had a great interest in ivory sculptures. Ferdinando I de 'Medici (1549-1609) started the family collection, enriched in the years to compete only with the courts of Vienna and Dresden. First in the world, Florence opens an exhibition with over one hundred and fifty ivory items coming from the main Florentine and foreign museums, and from private collections, to cover a period that goes from the 15th century to the Baroque. An entire section is for the ivories from Goa (India) and from the Portuguese and Spanish Eastern colonies. Leo X & Florence This exhibition will follow the life of Giovanni, the second son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, from his birth in Florence in 1475 until March 9th 1513, when he was elected Pope, and then his brief return to the city of his birth in 1515. Works by Botticelli, Andrea Sansovino, Granacci, Ghirlandaio and Perugino will illustrate this part of the route in a section dedicated to the education of the future pope. The years of Leo’s papacy were celebrated as a new "golden age" in which the capital of Christendom could bring the requirements of the classical world back to life again thanks to the work of artists and humanists. Piazza della Repubblica marks the site of the forum, the centre of the ancient Roman city. The exact present site of the Colonna dell’Abbondanza marks the intersection of the axes of the Cardo (now via Roma, via degli Speziali) and Decumanus (now via del Corso). In the early medieval period the forum area was densely built over, this area retained its function as a meeting place, to accommodate the market, which was institutionalised after 1000. In the 16th century the Mercato became the Mercato Vecchio on the completion of the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo near Ponte Vecchio. The Mercato Vecchio was a long, low building in an oval rectilinear plan, with an overhanging roof to shelter the customers and the stalls placed on either side. Other shops and stalls were sited in the piazzetta. The Mercato had numerous shrines and churches (now lost, but recorded in 18th century photographs, paintings and drawings housed in the Museo di Firenze com’era). Here also was to be found the Jewish Ghetto, where the Cosimo I had forced the city’s Jews to live. It contained an Italian synagogue and a Spagnola or Levantine

synagogue. It was thus a unique area of tightly packed streets and buildings, where over time medieval buildings survived intact. The sole witness to the old piazza del Mercato is the Colonna della Dovizia or Colonna dell’Abbondanza (Column of Abundance, re-positioned in 1956) on a stepped base. Considered to be the centre of the city. The present column dates to 1431, and is surmounted by a grey sandstone statue of Dovizia (or Abbondanza), by Giovan Battista Foggini, replacing an original by Donatello (found to be irreperably eroded in 1721. The present appearance of the square is the result of the city planning announced and carried out on the proclamation of Florence as the capital of Italy (1865-71), with particularly intense activity in this Piazza between 1885 and 1895. The decision to broaden the square allowed the total destruction of buildings of great importance: medieval towers, churches, the corporate seats of the Arti, some palaces of noble families, as well as craftsmen’s shops and residences. The demolition was presented as a necessity if the area’s insanitary conditions were to be improved. The town anyway underwent an enormous loss. The appearance of the square before the nineteenthcentury demolitions is documented in prints, paintings and drawings in the Museo di Firenze com’era in Via dell’Oriuolo. Artists like Telemaco Signorini depicted with melancholy this disappearing part of town. The palaces that rose in the new square, followed the eclectic fashion, following this transformation, the square became a kind of “lounge” for the town; since then refined palaces, luxury hotels, department stores and elegant cafes have sprung up around it, among which the known Caffè delle Giubbe Rosse, the location for the brawl between the Milanese Futurists of Marinetti and the Florentine artists centred around the magazine La Voce di Ardengo Soffici. On the north side are the historic and prestigious Caffè Gilli (to the right) and of the Caffè Paszkowski (on the left). On the east side there is the Savoy Hotel, built by Vincenzo Micheli. It has been a hotel ever since its inception and its facade is in perfect tune with the flavor of the period, the Palazzo constitutes the model for other palaces on the square which were constructed a few decades afterwards.

The West side is delimited bythe porticos with the triumphal arch, called the “Arcone”, was inspired by the most courtly Florentine Renaissance architecture, even if its additions to that style seem to be distant from the true ancient style. The pompous inscription that dominates the square was dictated, it seems, from Isidoro del Lungo, or another literary source: L’ANTICO CENTRO DELLA CITTÀ / DA SECOLARE SQUALLORE / A VITA NUOVA RESTITUITO (The ancient centre of the city / restored from age-old squalor / to new life).

A city tour guided by the latest novel of the American writer Sequel to “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels and Demons,” American writer Dan Brown’s “Inferno” digs into the mysteries of Dante's Florence. This time the investigations of professor Robert Langdon start after he wakes up in Florence with no memory of the previous days and with the U.S. government close on his heels. Let’s see which are Dan Brown’s novel five ‘hot spots’:

The Boboli Gardens Here Robert and his friend doctor Sienna Brooks hide from the U.S. agents. The royal gardens designed by Tribolo extend over a large stretch of hilly land full of grottos, fountains and statues. They started a trend that laid the basis for all the royal gardens to come in Europe, including Versailles. Robert and Sienna run through the stone Amphitheatre, carried out in the Seventeenth century by architects Giulio and Alfonso Parigi, they pass Neptune’s pond and end up in Buontalenti’s Grotto (or Large Grotto), place commissioned by Francesco I de' Medici, but named after its designer.

The Vasari Corridor From Boboli Gardens, the two fugitives cross the Vasari Corridor, which is well worth visiting. It connects the Uffizi Gallery with the Pitti Palace and hosts a rich collection of self-portraits by past and present artists. Built by Vasari in 1565 on commission by Cosimo de’ Medici, it passes above the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the city, famous for the many jewelry shops. The same passage served as escape route to the Resistance during World War II! Guided tours through this special path can be booked by small groups through the Uffizi ticket office. Robert and his friend cross the Uffizi Gallery and reach Palazzo Vecchio, looking for help. Palazzo Vecchio The two enter the Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred), once seat of the City Council, in Palazzo Vecchio. Over the centuries the building was remodelled several times, as house of the Priori delle Arti, of the Signoria and also ducal residence, but it is still the most important civil building in the city. Construction, to plans by Arnolfo di Cambio, was begun in 1299. The Salone dei Cinquecento used to be the study of Francesco I, but it is not the only room to visit. Unfortunately, Robert and Sienna have to rush out of the palace to look for a copy of Dante’s Commedia, so they miss the beautiful room of the Elements and the Sala dei Gigli, do not make the same mistake! Casa di Dante e Chiesa di Beatrice Looking for the book to solve an enigma, Robert and Sienna arrive to the House and Museum of Dante, unluckily closed. It is in front of the nearby Church of Beatrice that they can use a tourist's iPhone to surf the web and search for the poem. What Brown does not tell us is that the House is only a reconstruction. Built in the early 20th century, it contains exhibits illustrating life in Florence at the time of the great poet (1265–1321), his life of and his exile, lasted over twenty years. The so-called “Church of Beatrice,” instead, is very likely to be the church where Dante married Gemma Donati and also church of Beatrice’s family, whose houses were located in Via del Corso.

itinerary | inferno The Baptistery Robert and Sienna are led here by the key phrase ‘Paradise 25.’ The green and white marble Baptistery of San Giovanni (1128) is a masterpiece of Florentine architecture, remembered by Dante in his Commedia as ‘beautiful San Giovanni’. The splendid three bronze doors - including the Door of Paradise mentioned and crossed by Robert - are only copies of the works by Andrea Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti: the originals, recently restored, are preserved in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. The Baptistery is one of the city’s oldest buildings and treasures some very fine mosaics. After this Florentine tour, you could keep on following Robert and Sienna to Venice, and so the story goes... Fiesole is one of the few places just outside Florence that most people want to visit when they are here. Although it is particularly beautiful in summer, it is a delightful place to visit at any other time of the year as it offers fascinating monuments, good restaurants and wonderful views. An ancient Etruscan town (you can still see vestiges of its mighty walls), it was conquered by the Romans who built the Roman amphitheatre, baths and other buildings, Its position however was always an attractive one, especially its sunny slopes rising up from Florence, protected by the mountains at the rear. The Medici and other aristocracy made it popular, building the splendid villas that we can still see today. The landscape began to be dominated by dark towering cypress trees that are now so typical of the area. The hills of Fiesole have been the inspiration of poets, writers and artists for centuries and were also greatly loved by Queen Victoria, who knew the area from childhood. Enough of history! You can catch a nr. 7 bus for Fiesole from Piazza San Marco, as it is a rather long walk on foot! The ride takes you up past many of the most beautiful villas in Tuscany. If you stop half-way you can also visit San Domenico, the Convent and Church, and the ancient Badia Fiesolana, just down the hill. Once in the pretty square you should visit the archeological area, with the Roman theatre and Archaeological Museum, full of Etruscan finds, the Bandini Museum, with its fascinating collection of 13th and 14th century paintings and Della Robbia sculpture. The majestic Romanesque Cathedral of San Romolo and its bell tower are emblematic monuments in Fiesole and symbols of the art, piety and religious life of this ancient Diocese.

Similar in design to the Church of San Miniato a Monte, the Cathedral was built on a basilican plan in 1028.Divided into three naves by stone columns topped with beautifully carved capitals, many of them of Roman date, it was enlarged several times from the 13th century onwards. Two flights of steps lead up to the raised presbytery that hosts the high altar, the Bishopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throne and the wooden choir, while the crypt below contains the sarcophagus containing the bones of St. Romulus, the Patron Saint of the town and the Diocese. Plain, simple and basic, the Tuscan cuisine needs little elaboration to be able to conquer new admirers. The care given to the quality of the basic ingredients is an essential part of Tuscan cultural traditions, still closely linked to country cooking and genuine products. You only need taste a slice of Tuscan bread soaked in olive oil to appreciate the essence of this cuisine. The locally produced extra-virgin oil is in fact of exceptional quality, wonderful whether cooked or raw, and accompanies almost all the most characteristic recipes in the region. A Tuscan style lunch starts with a meaty appetiser based on cold cuts (including savoury salted ham), and croutons, slices of toast spread with a paté made with chicken livers, spleen of veal, capers and butter. Traditional first courses include simple but delicious vegetable soups like the ‘pappa col pomodoro’, made with tomato, garlic, basil and pepper, or the ‘ribollita’, made with vegetables cooked for hours, the flavour brought out by a last minute topping of oil. Pappardelle (ribbon pasta) served with a hare sauce made with red wine, oil and tomato, is just one of the typical pasta dishes. The world famous Florentine steak, a special cut of prized Chianina beef, is a symbolic second course, though we should also include characteristic Tuscan tripe, flavoured with bacon, tomato and Parmesan. The most popular legumes are beans, cultivated here from Etruscan times and either cooked ‘all’uccelletto’ (in tomato sauce with sage) or in a wine flask. Like the soups, vegetables are almost always tossed in a frying pan with oil and garlic - spinach, artichokes, baby marrows - or fried, like, for example, the crunchy marrow flowers. Typical dishes in the summer months are the ‘pinzimonio’ or sliced fresh vegetable dip of oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, or classic fresh field salads.

A corner of ancient Florence can be found between the Ponte Vecchio and the Pitti Palace that is full of craft workshops and beloved by artists and intellectuals. The Trattoria 4 Leoni, situated in Piazza della Passera, offers the sort of welcome that we would expect to find in the homes of old friends. The furnishings are in the typical Tuscan traditions, plain yet refined, with straw-bottomed chairs and marble-topped tables. Mine host Stefano Di Puccio is held in high esteem in the city for his sporting history as a player in the “Historic Florentine Football Matches”, but also for the genuine hospitality that can be found in his restaurant and for quality of his cooking. Platters in the true Tuscan tradition emerge from the kitchen, from the mythical Huge Fry-Up (fried chicken, rabbit and vegetables) and the steaks, always excellent, to the famous Impruneta Peposo (peppery stew) or the delicious 4 Leoni Salad; all of them dishes for gourmets! We must not forget to mention the desserts, all homemade, like the pear and chocolate cake, the apple tart or the cheese cake; or else there are the popular Prato Cantuccini (almond biscuits) to dip in the Holy Wine. The wines are all of excellent quality and can also be ordered by the glass. Outside dining under a white marquee and surrounded by pots of sweet-melling bay trees is possible in the summer months.
