Baroque Ivories from the Courts of Europe

For almost two centuries, from the mid-16th century on, the courts of Europe considered ivory sculpture to be one of the loftiest and most sophisticated forms of artistic expression. The most important sculptors of the Baroque era both in Italy and across the Alps, and even as far afield as the Portuguese and Spanish colonies, tried their hand at this highly complex and difficult technique in which the artist's skill was matched only by the preciousness and rarity of the raw material. Throughout Europe emperors and grand dukes, popes and princes, ranking prelates and wealthy bankers vied for the ivory sculptors' work, often putting together collections of masterpieces in this sophisticated artistic genre, ranging from traditional figurative work to fully-fledged tours de force in turned ivory â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which merged the pleasure of visual capriccio with the scientific stringency of mathematical calculation. Ferdinando I de' Medici (1549-1609) started one of the most spectacular collections of carved ivory in Europe, and the collection went from strength to strength over the years, eventually comprising several hundred items before the dynasty became extinct. In terms of its size, quality and importance, the Medici collection was paralleled only by that of the imperial court in Vienna and that of the princes in Dresden. Cups and reliefs, mythological compositions and genre scenes, saints and portraits of princesses, turned towers and trinkets: every aspect of figurative and abstract art is reflected in the ivories in the Florentine collection. The Medici ivories are now in the Museo degli Argenti in Palazzo Pitti, where they form one of the leading attractions in the rooms on the ground floor, allowing the visitor to enter a magic world of graceful diaphanous objects which appear to have leapt straight out of a fairy tale.

The exhibition, comprising over one hundred and fifty pieces both from the Florentine collection and from leading foreign museums, along with other ivories from private collections never before shown in public, will write a new and spectacular chapter in art history, a chapter never yet studied in any depth, especially not in its "international" aspect which was such a unique feature of the Medici collections. The exhibition is broken down into several sections tracing the art of ivory carving from the 15th century, when it caught Lorenzo the Magnificent's eye, through the High Renaissance and later, right up to the explosion of the Baroque with works by the Flemish artists, and by Leonhard Kern, François Duquesnoy and Georg Petel, who practiced their art in Italy for many years and who took the technique of ivory carving to the highest level. The man who invented this kind of item in the late 16th century was an Italian, Giovanni Ambrogio Maggiore, in service in the courts of Germany. Until November 3rd.

Cappelle Medicee Tuscan Wines The austere construction that hosts the Medici Chapels, created by the family as a huge mausoleum, can be reached from the apse of the Church of San Lorenzo in Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini. It is composed of two main parts, the New Sacristy, built by Michelangelo from 1519, and the great Chapel of the Princes, where the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and their families are buried, which dates from a century later . A supreme architect and town planner, a prodigious scholar and an extremely acute art theorist, but also a mathematician, painter, archaeologist, physicist, chemist and musician, Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) was the man that embodied the universal ideals of Humanism before Leonardo. He possessed an intellect capable of penetrating the most diverse fields, of formulating original syntheses of reason and beauty, of defining the rules of a new aesthetics and of shaping the sensibility of an epoch. Born out of wedlock but immediately legitimatised by his father Lorenzo, Leon Battista Alberti entered this world in Genoa in the year 1404, a member of an aristocratic and wealthy Florentine family of merchants and bankers that had been exiled from Florence

for political reasons in 1377. Following his father wherever he moved, he studied classical subjects at the best universities: literature in Venice and Padua, law and Greek in Bologna. But from an early age he privately cultivated the most diverse scientific and artistic interests: music, painting, sculpture, architecture, physics, mathematics. The immensity of his curiosity and knowledge made him the greatest example of the Renaissance Man, the researcher of the microcosm and the macrocosm, universal in his openness, in many aspects the predecessor of the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. The return to Florence from exile between 1428 and 1432 was an occasion for Alberti to get closer to the works of the great innovators Brunelleschi, Donatello, Masaccio. And it was to Brunelleschi that in 1436 he dedicated his De Pictura (which he himself

translated into vernacular as Della Pittura), a treatise destined to define the rules of figurative arts: the perspective method according to firm geometrical principles, the theory of proportions based on anatomy, the theory of light and visible rays in relation to the colours, the harmonious composition of the "stories". Alberti's treatise was absorbed by many artists close to him, such as Donatello, Filippo Lippi, Beato Angelico, Ghiberti, Luca Della Robbia, and was probably read by the younger ones, among them Botticelli, Filippino, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raffaello, and thus steered a new course for the figurative arts of the second half of the 15th century, leading to the full Renaissance of the 16th century. It was thus that in little more than twenty years, from 1450 until his death, the designs of extraordinary works were created. In Florence, Alberti's imprint can be seen in particular in the Palazzo Rucellai, the model for a nobleman's urban residence, in the shrine of the Holy Sepulchre in the church of San Pancrazio, in the completion of the faรงade of Santa Maria Novella, in the gallery of the Santissima Annunziata. And surprisingly we even feel the need to reconsider the designer of the Palazzo Pitti, in its 15th-century nucleus, in the light of the theoretical and practical experience of Alberti. His radius of activity also extended into the countryside, with the apse of the parish church of San Martino a Gangalandi and the Medici villas of Fiesole and Poggio a Caiano, the latter of which was probably built based on his design. Other important works of Alberti in Italy are the Malatesta Temple in Rimini and the churches of San Sebastiano and Sant'Andrea in Mantua. Alberti died in Rome on April 25, 1472. A few years later (1485), Lorenzo de Medici launched the fortune of his most important treatise by having De Re Aedificatoria (until then copied by hand) printed by the prestigious editor Agnolo Poliziano, thus realising a project that Leon Battista himself had dreamed of. The Ideal City of Urbino represents one of the most faithful reconstructions of the architecture described by Alberti in the De Re Aedificatoria. The new approach is applied not only to the views of the city, but also to the representation of elegant residences. The Ideal City, classical symbol of the formal perfection reached by Renaissance architecture and city planning,

has revealed its probable source – it seems that Leon Battista Alberti is responsible for this mysterious and universally known 15th century painting. This is the proposal of an original itinerary: a journey through a ‘secret’ city of a historic and artistic value equal to that of the considerably more famous ‘city of Brunelleschi’ The list is very long: it includes the Chapel of the Crucifix in San Miniato and the portico of the Pazzi Chapel in Santa Croce, the cupola and cloister of San Lorenzo and the shrine of Santissima Annunziata, the marble facings of the drum of the Cupola of the Duomo right through to Palazzo Pitti The shadow of Leon Battista Alberti stretches over Florence and Tuscany well beyond the well-known works designed for the Rucellai (Palazzo Rucellai, the Holy Sepulchre in the nearby church of San Pancrazio, the facade of Santa Maria Novella), and beyond the ancient style rotonda of the new choir of Santissima Annunziata, designed in 1470 for his patron the marquis Lodovico Gonzaga. Santa Maria Novella Santa Maria Novella is chronologically the first of the great Florentine basilicas. Its name, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Novellaâ&#x20AC;?, comes from the fact that it was built on the site of a 9th century oratory, called Santa Maria delle Vigne, which had already been enlarged in 1094. In 1221 this church and the surrounding area was assigned to the Dominican monks, who immediately began to transform it. Construction started on what were to be the sumptuous headquarters of the powerful Dominican Order in 1246; designed by two architect monks, Fra Sisto Fiorentino and Fra Ristoro da Campi, it was completed in 1360 under the direction of Fra Iacopo Talenti, who also designed the Spanish Chapel or chapter house (1350-55), the convent Refectory (1353) and the great pointed belltower in Romanesque-Gothic style (1330). The elaborate facade of inlaid black and white marble is a real masterpiece: it was started in 1300 and later completed by Leon Battista Alberti in 1470 and it can perhaps be considered to be the most beautiful of all the Florentine churches. Alberti harmoniously integrated the already existing mediaeval elements by developing them along a classical design, adding a triangular tympanum, as well as creating the two beautifully inlaid lateral volute or scrolls to hide the slope of the roof that covers the side naves. The interior of the Basilica is built on a Latin cross on the lines of the Cistercian-Gothic style which was imported from France but modified by the Italian mendicant Orders (the Franciscans and the Dominicans), in order to make it easier to preach to large numbers of worshippers. The interior is therefore divided up into three naves (the centre nave is 100 metres long), without chapels, and develops into a much larger area around the apse, particularly noticeable from Piazza Stazione. The interior of Santa Maria Novella contains a series of works that bear the signatures of Giotto, Andrea Orcagna, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Benedetto da Maiano, Masaccio, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi. The frescoes inside the Cloisters are the work of Paolo Uccello and the Florentine school of the 13th to 15th century.

Palazzo Rucellai In the Florentine society of the mid 15th century, the merchant Giovanni Rucellai was rapidly becoming one of the wealthiest and most respected men in the city. He entrusted to Alberti the design of his new palazzo in Via della Vigna. It can be considered the prototype of the Renaissance mansion. Alberti’s intervention was concentrated in the reorganisation of the pre-existing Rucellai dwellings and on the facade, marked by pure and elegant geometrical forms. Leon Battista Alberti achieved for his patron a dwelling of classical flavour which greatly enhanced the latter’s prestige. The three stories of the Rucellai facade have different classical orders, as in the Colosseum, but with the Tuscan order at the base, a Renaissance original in place of the Ionic order at the second level, and a very simplified Corinthian order at the top level. Twin-lit, roundarched windows in the two upper stories are set within arches with highly pronounced voussoirs that spring from pilaster to pilaster. The facade is topped by a projecting cornice..

Located in the square with the same name, behind Palazzo Rucellai, San Pancrazio is now a deconsecrated church, that today hosts the contemporary art museum dedicated to the sculptor Marino Marini. The church was built in the early Christian age, and is documented from 931 being eon of the oldest church in town; according to the historian Giovanni Villani, it would have been founded by Charlemagne. The annexed monastery was created in 1157, while the church was restored end enlarged from the 14th century. The cloister houses a fresco by Neri di Bicci. Giovanni Rucellai commissioned Leon Battista Alberti to build a chapel on the church's side (the only part of the church still consecrated today), which was finished in 1467. This includes the notable tempietto del Santo Sepolcro (Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre),

The shape of the temple is inspired by that of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, reinterpreted in a strictly classical manner. On a rectangular plan, set on the golden mean, walls raise punctuated by fluted Corinthian pilasters and paneled square decorated with marble inlays. The crown is composed of a battlement in the shape of lilies(probably in honor of the Annunciation to which the chapel was dedicated) and a lanterns with a circular base. The external decoration of the marble inlays are based on traditional Florentine Romanesque, with examples including the Baptistery of San Giovanni, San Miniato al Monte and the Abbey of Fiesole. Alberti drew on the tradition to regularize and modernize it, though without a clear break, but enhancing their legacy. Among these panels stand out some heraldic emblems belonging to the most important figures of the time: the sail to the wind explained Giovanni Rucellai, the mazzocchio with three feathers of Cosimo the Elder, the diamond ring with two feathers of Piero de 'Medici and the three interlaced rings of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The church was modified in the 18th and 19th centuries, and, from 1808, it served the seat of the city's lottery, then as a tribunal and then as a tobacco factory. Museo di Marino Marini of Florence was inaugurated in 1988. All of the art seen in the museum was donated by Marini and his wife Mercedes (Marina) Pedrazzini. The Museo Marino Marini has a very relaxed feel, with a refreshing display of modern art which may come as a nice break from all the Renaissance museums.

ELeonora gori talks passionately and knowledgeably while describing the history of the Graziella Group company, which has been carrying out high-level jewellery with style and elegance for over 50 years. Above all, however, she enthusiastically talks about her mother, Graziella Buoncompagni, and her career, as, in 1958, she was responsible for creating this brand name that has spanned decades and is still an essential reference point in high fashion jewellery Made-in Italy. Graziella is a historic Made-in-Italy brand, so could you tell us about its origins and your family traditions? The whole thing started and evolved around the figure of my grandmother, a woman possessing great personality and charm, who learned how to make jewellery by hand when she was only 17. Her determination and enthusiasm for this craft soon led her to set up her own goldsmithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s laboratory where she designed new and creative forms for her jewellery. My father and my aunt joined the firm in the 1980â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and extended its activity on a wider scale, managing to find opportunities on the international market where Graziella is still well known for original and finely crafted creations. A love of jewellery that has been passed down for three generations and now involves me in the first person. What concept lies behind your brand, how do you create your jewellery and what do you think has made your products so successful? Nowadays Graziellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collections are born in our creative office, which is a real garden in the interior of our headquarters and where sculptors, designers and artists work together to give life to originally shaped creations. What most characterises and distinguishes your collection? Nature with its flowers, animals and colours is our muse. Our jewellery is in fact often solar and enriched with coloured stones and enamels. We also continue the "Florentine diamond setting" traditions and these are the main components in our Diamond line collections. Tell us about your group’s social commitments. Since 2006, with the birth of our GRAZIELLA JEWEL GALLERY in Florence, GRAZIELLA has been engaged in the social matter having set up a charity foundation: FONDAZIONE ANGELO GORI ONLUS in memory of my uncle who died prematurely. The foundation aims to promote and develop basic education, agricultural implements, health care and selfsufficient water supply in third world countries. We have recently ended the building of a public library in Niamey that will be inaugurate later this year.

Italian fashion, much of which has always been centred in Florence, is famous throughout the world. In February 1951, the first show featuring Italian fashions was held at Giovanni Battista Giorgini’s beautiful home on Via dei Serragli, Villa Torrigiani. The show’s protagonists were Fontana, Jole Veneziani, Fabiani, Simonetta, Germana Marucelli, Pucci, Noberasco, Carosa, Schuberth and a few others. In the salon of Villa Torrigiani the models walked down the runway for a few important American buyers and journalists who had come to Europe for the Paris shows, and whom Giorgini had persuaded to come to Florence to see the nascent Italian fashions. In July 1952 Giorgini obtained permission to use the magnificent Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti for his fashion shows. Names such as Capucci, Valentino and Armani suddenly acquired worldwide notoriety, and the Made in Italy entered the international scene through the main door. Nowdays Florence boasts some of the finest fashion stores in Italy and is therefore an ideal shopping route for a wide variety of really original and exclusive clothes.

Il Bisonte The craft laboratory of Il Bisonte opened in 1970 on the initiative of Wanny di Filippo in historic Palazzo Corsini in Via del Parione, between Via Tornabuoni and the Lungarno, right in the centre of Florence, and soon began producing handbags, bags, wallets, pocket books, belts and a variety of other accessories. Timeless objects carried out in the finest vacchetta leather, in other words, in natural vegetable-tanned hide that becomes increasingly beautiful as age and sunlight build up the patina on its surface. Casa Buonarroti, once residence of Michelangelo and today museum, opens an exhibition entirely dedicated to one of the main European neoclassical sculptors: Antonio Canova. His beautiful monochrome temperas and models will be available to the public together with a collection of albums and sketchbooks borrowed from the Museum of Bassano del Grappa (Veneto). ‘Beauty and ‘Memory’: the two cornerstones of the Arts during Italian pre-Romanticism and Purism. Beauty is magnifically conveyed by the plaster of Canova’s Venus Italica, whose final version is in the Palatine Gallery, while Memory is very well signified by the series of sketches that created (1806-10) the funerary monument of Vittorio Alfieri, father of the Italian tragedy, still located in the Basilica of Santa Croce. The Russian Avant-Garde Kandinsky, Malevich, Filonov, Goncharova

The first international exhibition to examine the fundamental importance of the Oriental and Eurasian connection to Russian Modernism, follows the destinies of Russia’s self-proclaimed “Barbarians” in their search for new sources of artistic inspiration. Neolithic stone figures, Siberian shaman rituals, popular Chinese prints, Japanese engravings, Theosophical doctrine and Indian philosophy are some of the elements which inspired Russia’s new artists and writers as they developed their aesthetic and theoretical ideas just before and after the Revolution of October, 1917. The exhibition demonstrates how modern Russian culture experienced a deep attraction to the exotic, the unknown and the “other”, qualities which artists and writers identified with the spirit of the taiga, the virgin territories of desert and steppe and the “otherness” of Oriental culture. The exhibition sets out to reconstruct some of the contacts that played a crucial role in determining the Hungarian court's cultural and artistic choices. Thus it will illustrate the trends in the king's taste, setting them against the backdrop of the Florentine context of his time, while also endeavouring, by drawing a number of parallels, to identify the possible influence on those choices exercised by Lorenzo the Magnificent and his entourage of thinkers and artists. In this context, special attention will be devoted to the libraries of Matthias Corvinus and of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and thus pride of place will be given to the precious illuminated codices commissioned by Matthias Corvinus for his library, now sadly dispersed. Some of these manuscripts, which remained unfinished in Florence on Matthias' death, were subsequently purchased by the Medici.. FROM october 10th. On display, works of art originally positioned in the public buildings of Florence which housed the powers running the city: the halls of the various Arti, or guilds, Palazzo Vecchio and the city gates and walls. This exhibition offers visitors a new key to understand the works of art, by highliting the importance of - both sacred and secular - images in the propaganda and communication strategy of the groups which ruled the city in the era of the Commune and the Republic, before the rise of the Medici family changed the city from both a political and an aesthetic standpoint. Leo X & Florence This exhibition will follow the life of Giovanni, the second son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, from his birth in Florence in 1475 until March 9th 1513, when he was elected Pope, and then his brief return to the city of his birth in 1515. Works by Botticelli, Andrea Sansovino, Granacci, Ghirlandaio and Perugino will illustrate this part of the route in a section dedicated to the education of the future pope. The years of Leo’s papacy were celebrated as a new "golden age" in which the capital of Christendom could bring the requirements of the classical world back to life again thanks to the work of artists and humanists. The austere construction that hosts the Medici Chapels, created by the family as a huge mausoleum, can be reached from the apse of the Church of San Lorenzo in Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini. It is composed of two main parts, the New Sacristy, built by Michelangelo from 1519, and the great Chapel of the Princes, where the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and their families are buried, which dates from a century later and is lined throughout with marble and semi-precious stones; the tour of the building also includes some rooms in the crypt (designed by Buontalenti) underneath the Chapel of the Princes. The Crypt is the first room to be reached from the museum entrance. The tombstones of the Grand Dukes, their wives and immediate family can be seen on the floor of this low vaulted room. A rich collection of 17th–18th century reliquaries linked to the magnificent grand ducal patronage has recently been arranged in a series of glass cases in this room. This sumptuous octagonal environment is 28 metres wide and topped by the cupola of San Lorenzo, which reaches a height of 59 metres, the second in grandeur in the city after the cupola by Brunelleschi. It was conceived by Cosimo I, but not carried out until later by his successor Ferdinando I, who, in 1604, commissioned the architect Matteo Nigetti to build it on a design by Don Giovanni de' Medici, who was also the Grand Duke’s brother. Cosimo II were actually carried out, both of them by Pietro Tacca between 1626 and 1642. The other grand ducal tombs belong to Cosimo I (1519-1574), Cosimo II (the successor of Ferdinando I, 15901621) and Cosimo III (who succeeded Ferdinando II, 1643-1723). The sarcophagi are really empty and the real remains of the Grand Dukes and their families (about fifty major and minor figures), up to Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici (the last heir of the dynasty, 16671743), are preserved in simple environments behind the walls of the crypt by Buontalenti. The New Sacristy was built in various stages by Michelangelo between 1521 and 1534 and can be reached along a corridor from the Chapel of the Princes. Michelangelo based his design on the same plan that Brunelleschi had used for the Old Sacristy though he divided the area into more complex shapes, with triumphal arches opening out onto apse-like spaces. He created recesses in the two side walls to hold the monumental tombs dedicated to Giuliano Duke of Nemours and his nephew Lorenzo Duke of Urbino, carrying out three sculptures dedicated to the Allegories of Time for each of them; these were placed on top of the tombs with portraits of the Dukes above. He chose the subject of Day and Night for the tomb of Giuliano deâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Medici, seated, with a proud bearing; and Dawn and Dusk for that of Lorenzo, shown in a mel-

ancholy and thoughtful pose. Both the statues look towards the centre of the chapel where Michelangelo carried out and placed a Madonna with Jesus on her lap. By looking towards the sacred likeness, the dukes express the religious inclinations of the artist, who believed that only spirituality and religion can give relief and set manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mind at ease when all earthly glories are past. The decoration of the chapel is completed by the statues of Sts. Cosmas and Damian by students of Michelangelo. Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano de' Medici are buried under the altar as Michelangelo never found the time to build them a monumental tomb, in fact, he left Florence forever in 1534, leaving the chapel uncompleted.

Tuscany, as we know, produces some very high quality wines. Its hills are covered in vineyards, one of the oldest forms of farming in Italy and nowhere else can boast such a wide variety of wines. Here you can taste the best of the red wines from the Chianti, the Brunello of Montalcino, the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano and the Carmignano or the Morellino of Scansano, just to mention some of those known worldwide, or the freshest of white wines, like the Vernaccia of San Gimignano, the Pomino, the Ansonica or the Elba wines. The wine making process obviously varies from wine to wine but is usually based on two methods, one for the reds and one for the whites. Here we would like to give a rough idea on what happens to the grapes, from the time they are picked to the moment the wine bottle is uncorked on the table, and discover the particular characteristics of both processes. Young wines should be served at room temperature, with the bottle opened at the moment of drinking, while vintage wines are characterised by a much stronger alcohol content. Harsh and bitter to begin with, they become harmonious and pleasant in time and can be kept without any problems for over 15 years, if

Оставив вино «отдыхать» Процесс производства белого вина отличается от производства красного тем что при ферментации не исползуются косточки и стебли. Таким образом в вино не попадает танин, который окрашивает его. Белые вина вызревают достаточно быстро и через небольшое время после сбора винограда они уже готовы. Предпочтительнее пить молодые вина чтобы почуствовать натуральный аромат и свежесть вкуса. Белое вино хранится до трех лет в прохладном и темном месте.

A corner of ancient Florence can be found between the Ponte Vecchio and the Pitti Palace that is full of craft workshops and beloved by artists and intellectuals. The Trattoria 4 Leoni, situated in Piazza della Passera, offers the sort of welcome that we would expect to find in the homes of old friends. The furnishings are in the typical Tuscan traditions, plain yet refined, with straw-bottomed chairs and marble-topped tables. Mine host Stefano Di Puccio is held in high esteem in the city for his sporting history as a player in the “Historic Florentine Football Matches”, but also for the genuine hospitality that can be found in his restaurant and for quality of his cooking. Platters in the true Tuscan tradition emerge from the kitchen, from the mythical Huge Fry-Up (fried chicken, rabbit and vegetables) and the steaks, always excellent, to the famous Impruneta Peposo (peppery stew) or the delicious 4 Leoni Salad; all of them dishes for gourmets! We must not forget to mention the desserts, all homemade, like the pear and chocolate cake, the apple tart or the cheese cake; or else there are the popular Prato Cantuccini (almond biscuits) to dip in the Holy Wine. The wines are all of excellent quality and can also be ordered by the glass. Outside dining under a white marquee and surrounded by pots of sweet-melling bay trees is possible in the summer months.
