assignment brief
You are called to do a consultation for a client that is looking to refurbish her kitchen, dining area and playroom. Please see floor plan attached. The kitchen she has chosen is high gloss and custom made by a local kitchen maker. (The colour of the kitchen is up to you to choose.) Background information on the client: The client is an artist specialising in modern sculpture. Her husband is in IT and runs his own successful company. They have 2 small children aged three and five, with another one on the way. The rest of the house is vibrantly decorated with an eclectic mix of art and other interesting artifacts on display. The client shows you an image of a black lacquer dining table and chairs in a typical Bauhaus design style. She mentions that she is a great admirer of this period as well as Eileen Grey in particular. The focus of this project is to select and source flooring, wall coverings and paint for these three spaces. The client has requested a contemporary and bespoke design using high-end products. You are encouraged to be as creative as possible with your choice of materials and it is imperative that you conduct thorough research. Some of the materials requiring consideration include: Flooring - carpet, wood, concrete, tiles, linoleum, rubber, cork, etc Wall coverings - wallpaper, paint, plaster, murals, glass, Perspex, etc Tiling - wall and floor tiles, mosaics and decorative tiles maria del carmen corral lodeiro 72546664
3
For this particular brief, you are encouraged to use as many different materials as possible (i.e. please do not run engineered wooden flooring throughout the three rooms).
Task 1 Before you start the design, use high-end suppliers and research the materials consistently used in interior design projects. Some of the materials you research will be used in your design for Task 2. Show your research in a table format. Your table should include at least: 10 different flooring materials
7 different wall covering materials Create a table which contains 10 flooring materials and 7 wall covering materials. Within this table list: The qualities of each material, including Health and Safety aspects for both clients and tradespeople
Examples of Previous designers to have used the material, for example where a designer has used the materials within a domestic setting Examples of creative uses of each material, for example carpet being used as wallcovering To cite and reference your sources your images within the table you may include the link to the supplier below the image of your material sample. Written content within the table should be cited and referenced according to Harvard referencing and citation method found within the writing guidelines of your course material.
maria del carmen corral lodeiro 72546664
4
Task 2 Plan each room and investigate how your chosen materials will be implemented.
Include : Sketches
Plan (showing the different floor finishes)
Elevations for the various trades that will be fitting / decorating the areas These drawings should be annotated to clearly outline any design specifications. They must be accompanied by a specification sheet giving instructions for fittings and with any other relevant details that need to be considered i.e. floor levels adjusted etc. Write a short report on your chosen materials evaluating their characteristics and why you have chosen to use them. (150-200 words max per material)

Manifesto of the Staatliches Bauhaus Walter Gropius.
1919 8
The Bauhaus School operated in Germany between 1919 and 1933. As a school of thought, it advocated a new way of approaching problems in art, architecture, and design; and as a physical school in Weimar and Dessau, it hosted a succession of prominent course leaders. Teachers included avant-garde artists like Johannes Itten, Paul Klee and Vassily Kandinsky, while Bauhaus students included Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer and Gunta Stölzl. After the rise of the National Socialists, who effectively shut down the school for its “degenerate” ideas, many members of the Bauhaus travelled to other European countries and the USA to continue their work independently. As a result, “Bauhaus” became a twentieth-century movement reaching far beyond the Weimar Republic.

The Bauhaus movement is highly recognized in fields of design (interior design, graphic design, typography etc.) and architecture, but it's influence exists in many areas beyond art and design. The Bauhaus movement was influential in modernist architecture and modern design with geometric designs (important influence on Bauhaus was modernism), minimalism, respect for materials, hand-crafted to the extent it had mass marketing in mind (looks mass produced).

Jack Bedford for Dezeen Magazine
The influence of the Bauhaus on design education was significant. One of the main objectives of the Bauhaus was to unify art, craft, and technology, and this approach was incorporated into the curriculum of the Bauhaus. The structure of the Bauhaus Vorkurs (preliminary course) reflected a pragmatic approach to integrating theory and application. In their first year, students learnt the basic elements and principles of design and colour theory, and experimented with a range of materials and processes. This approach to design education became a common feature of architectural and design school in many countries. For example, the Shillito Design School in Sydney stands as a unique link between Australia and the Bauhaus. The colour and design syllabus of the Shillito Design School was firmly underpinned by the theories and ideologies of the Bauhaus. Its first year foundational course mimicked the Vorkurs and focused on the elements and principles of design plus colour theory and application. The founder of the school, Phyllis Shillito, which opened in 1962 and closed in 1980, firmly believed that "A student who has mastered the basic principles of design, can design anything from a dress to a kitchen stove".

The Bauhaus became the centre of new thinking. Functionality and simplicity were combined with aesthetics, to produce a purer form of design. Previously, Art Nouveau had been about creating ornate, complicated, decorative products. The Bauhaus reduced the complexity of design to simplicity, functionality and an pure form of aesthetics. The bauhaus promoted the use of materials such a tubular steel. Material that had not been used previously in furniture design or even considered as a suitable material for furniture. Tubular steel is light, versitile and cheap. It can be joined, shaped and for-

creations to reflect the underlying nature of the object. In
Modular Boxes in Pressed Glass
1926 Gropius wrote in Bauhaus Dessau – Principles of Bauhaus Production: "An object is defined by its nature. In order, then, to design it to function correctly – a container, a chair, or a house – one must first of all study its nature: for it must serve its purpose perfectly, that is, it must fulfil its function usefully, be durable, economical, and 'beautiful.'" The movement taught “truth to materials” as a central principle. They believed that material should be used in the most ‘honest’ way possible. In this way the nature of the material should not be modified in any way. maria del carmen corral lodeiro 72546664
14
Today Bauhaus influences can be seen everywhere from furniture to graphic design. An instigator in the minimalism trend which is still one of the most popular styles to date, Bauhaus helped the design world step away from the ornate designs of the early 20th century with its emphasis on function before form. Other leading styles, like Scandinavian, industrial and mid-century modern are unmistakable in their Bauhaus influences, showing how far the spread of the school’s teachings have reached. This influence has become so entrenched in the design world, that what were once unusual and striking designs, are now so familiar we might miss them if we don’t take a step back to really look at them.

Eileen Gray's next major contribution to design was in architecture. Encouraged by Le Corbusier and J.J.P Oud, she designed two houses in the Alpes Maritimes, one at Roquebrune which was built from 1926-1929, and the other at Castellar, built from 1932-1934. Both houses are considered to be among the purest examples of domestic architecture and interior design of the period. The inter-war years also saw Eileen Gray's 'Centre des Vacances' project, which was shown in Le Corbusier's Pavilion des Temps Nouveaux at the Paris

After the war, and up to her death in 1976, Eileen Gray continued to work as a designer on both major projects like the Cultural and Social Centre, which occupied her from 1946-1949, and on a number of smaller furniture designs. One of her last tasks was to work with Zeev Aram on the introduction of her designs onto the world market. Examples of her early work are in the V&A collection and her E1027 adjustable table is in the permanent design collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; these make a fitting tribute to her contribution to modern design. The Royal Society of Arts appointed her a Royal Designer for Industry in 1972. Eileen Gray died in Paris in 1976.
