" Is there an English House design style? Most high end residences pre 20th Century were highly influenced if not copies of European architectural style which in turn were interpretations of Greek and Roman classical aesthetic. It wasn't until the emergence of the Arts and Craft movement that and "English" have style evolved. The movement led by William Morris and Edwin Lutyens, and Philip Webb expressed texture through the use of traditional English material- brick, stone, timber, clay and slate. Assymetrical composition (Corner windows, chimneys, sweeping roofs) were key features. The quality of details was paramount. Control of the environment, available technology and local materials have and continue to affect building design.

The Veyron Experience We believe that great residential design is best approached by thinking about how to create a series of experiences, rather than creating any particular aesthetic, which might surprise, delight, soothe and even inspire those who use them. Those experiences might also be considered as providing the desired opportunities for impact, drama and “wow”, those reactions again being borne from ‘designing the experience’ rather than from any particular physical item, or architectural ‘bauble’. Good residential design should also enable and support its owners in their day-to-day activities in an effortless and practical way; the French architect Le Corbusier famously remarked that a house is a “machine for living in”… The following pages set out how Brightspace and Veyron might approach the design of those experiences, firstly illustrating the journey and series of experiences that start at the point of entering the grounds of the house and end with opening the front door and crossing the threshold. Those are followed by a series of conceptual vignettes and precedent images that show how the house might be experienced by the occupants from dawn to dusk and how, through carefully considered design, the house would both stimulate the emotions noted above and facilitate the owners’ daily activities.
