SECONDARY LIBRARIES MONTHLY REPORT

SJSD Libraries Summary of Activity - December 2013

Featured Library: Bode Middle School

in this report ... why libraries matter

Our middle school and high school libraries have been busy this school year! Librarians have already been checking out books to students, assisting with research projects, collaborating with teachers, and assisting with technology needs in their respective buildings! This month, librarians also conducted a variety of lessons with students, including getting students set up to use the library’s shared ebook collection on FollettShelf.

The March 2013 issue of School Library Journal outlined a study of Pennsylvania’s academic performance in relation to steep budget cuts made across the state in the area of school libraries - both staff and materials. Although more than two decades of similar research has been conducted in over 22 states, the Pennsylvania study uncovered the following new and significant findings: Quality school library programs significantly impact the most vulnerable students. For the first time, the impact of library programs on selected student groups that tend to experience achievement gaps was examined directly. - Kachel, Debra E., and Keith C. Lance. Totals

Our print circulation statistics showed approximately 2,500 books checked out in a one month period. These statistics were compiled from December 1, 2013, until December 31, 2013. These circulation statistics also represent the checkout activity of all 4 middle schools and all 3 high schools combined, for a total of 5,500 students. As well, our fiction statistics were strong. Students and staff checked out almost 2,000 fiction texts during this time. This shows that our libraries’

fiction collections are supporting the needs of ELA departments and reader’s/writer’s workshop. Finally, our librarians have begun tracking how our newer books are performing compared to the rest of the existing print collection. By our definition, we are tracking “new” books that were purchased beginning in the 2012-13 school year. These books are a little over a year old or newer in many cases. The proportion of the print collection that is checking out that is classified as new is very high. Out of all fiction books checked out, approximately 1/4 were new books.
