SECONDARY LIBRARIES MONTHLY REPORT

SJSD Libraries Summary of Activity - January 2014

in this report ... why libraries matter

Our middle school and high school libraries have been busy this school year! Librarians have already been checking out books to students, assisting with research projects, collaborating with teachers, and assisting with technology needs in their respective buildings! This month, librarians also conducted a variety of lessons with students. See the full report on page 4. Questions? Contact your librarian for more information!

School Library Journal recently published a column entitled New Report Hails Librarians as Drivers of Digital Transition, in which a report from the All4Ed foundation outlines a strong correlation between librarians and the use of technology in teaching. “Where we are seeing academic achievement and progress [in students], there has been a very strong librarian,” says Sara Hall, director of the Center for Digital Learning at the Alliance for Excellent Education. “As school districts are making this shift, they have got to take a look at the role of the librarian, and how crucial it is.” -Barack, Lauren. Totals New Books Checked Out

Totals

Our print circulation statistics showed approximately 5,000 books checked out in a one month period. These statistics were compiled from January 1, 2014, until January 31, 2014. These circulation statistics also represent the checkout activity of all 4 middle schools and all 3 high schools combined, for a total of 5,500 students. As well, our fiction statistics were strong. Students and staff checked out almost 4,000 fiction texts during this time. This shows that our libraries’

fiction collections are supporting the needs of ELA departments and reader’s/writer’s workshop. Finally, our librarians have begun tracking how our newer books are performing compared to the rest of the existing print collection. By our definition, we are tracking “new” books that were purchased beginning in the 2012-13 school year. These books are a little over a year old or newer in many cases. The proportion of the print collection that is checking out that is classified as new is very high. Out of all fiction books checked out, approximately 1/5 were new books.
