OCTOBER 2013
SECONDARY LIBRARIES MONTHLY REPORT
SJSD Libraries Summary of Activity - October 2013
Featured Library: Robidoux Middle School
in this report ... why libraries matter
Our middle school and high school libraries have been busy this school year! Librarians have already been checking out books to students, assisting with research projects, collaborating with teachers, and assisting with technology needs in their respective buildings! This month, many librarians held book fairs during parent/teacher conferences as a means of fundraising for their library budgets. Librarians also conducted a variety of lessons with students, including getting students set up to use the library’s shared ebook collection on FollettShelf.

The School Libraries Work! initiative is sponsored by the American Library Association with the focus of improving the research done on the impact school libraries have on school communities. Among the findings from a study down in Iowa, school with a school library program that is adequately staffed, resourced, and funded can lead to higher student achievement regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the community. These impacts can be seen at the high school level, where schools that had adequately funded libraries did better on the ACT. Print Circulation Statistics Books Checked Out
Totals New Books Checked Out
Totals
Our print circulation statistics showed approximately 5,500 books checked out in a one month period. These statistics were compiled from October 1, 2013, until October 31, 2013. These circulation statistics also represent the checkout activity of all 4 middle schools and all 3 high schools combined, for a total of 5,500 students. On average, each secondary student in the St. Joseph School District had the opportunity to check out at least one book. This is a huge success for our students who are selecting readings in the English Language Arts classes as well as for their own leisure reading. As well, our nonfiction statistics were strong. Students and staff checked out

over 1,200 nonfiction texts during this time. This shows that our libraries’ nonfiction collections are supporting the Common Core state standards as well as district initiatives to increase the amount of informational texts read by students. Finally, our librarians have begun tracking how our newer books are performing compared to the rest of the existing print collection. By our definition, we are tracking “new” books that were purchased beginning in the 2012-13 school year. These books are a little over a year old or newer in many cases. The proportion of the print collection that is checking out that is new is very high. Out of the 4,390 fiction books checked out, approximately 1/4 were new books. Out of the 1,203 nonfiction books checked out, approximately 1/6 were new books.
