SECONDARY LIBRARIES MONTHLY REPORT
SJSD Libraries Summary of Activity - November 2013
Featured Library: Benton High School
in this report ... why libraries matter
Our middle school and high school libraries have been busy this school year! Librarians have already been checking out books to students, assisting with research projects, collaborating with teachers, and assisting with technology needs in their respective buildings! This month, librarians also conducted a variety of lessons with students, including getting students set up to use the library’s shared ebook collection on FollettShelf.

Scholastic Administrator’s Magazine poses the question in an article titled “Are Librarians Still Important?” The short answer is a resounding yes! The article points out various studies that show reading improvements for schools who have a full-time, credentialed school librarian. However, according to the article, “the problem, librarians say, is that few administrators know precisely what they do these days. Many still hold on to the outdated stereotype of the librarian from their own school days-the one who shushed you on your first step into the libraryand remain unaware of the potential resource at their disposal.” - Kate Rix. "Are Librarians Still Important?" Scholastic. Scholastic Administrator's Magazine, n.d Web. 19 Dec. 2013.

Totals
Our print circulation statistics showed approximately 4,000 books checked out in a one month period. These statistics were compiled from November 1, 2013, until November 30, 2013. These circulation statistics also represent the checkout activity of all 4 middle schools and all 3 high schools combined, for a total of 5,500 students. As well, our nonfiction statistics were strong. Students and staff checked out almost 800 nonfiction texts during this time. This shows that our libraries’ nonfiction collections are supporting the Common Core

state standards as well as district initiatives to increase the amount of informational texts read by students. Finally, our librarians have begun tracking how our newer books are performing compared to the rest of the existing print collection. By our definition, we are tracking “new” books that were purchased beginning in the 2012-13 school year. These books are a little over a year old or newer in many cases. The proportion of the print collection that is checking out that is classified as new is very high. Out of all fiction books checked out, approximately 1/5 were new books. Out of all nonfiction books checked out, approximately 1/2 were new books. This is huge! Our new, up-todate nonfiction is moving!

Bookmas Trees! Our libraries began getting festive for the holidays this year around the Thanksgiving holiday. Both Bode Middle School and Robidoux Middle School created Bookmas Trees! These are Christmas trees created entirely out of books! Librarians Dlo Duvall and Melissa Corey got the idea from Pinterest and were able to create their trees with extra texts for the holiday season.
Happy Holidays
