A WORD FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, We are quickly approaching a very exciting time in our Club’s history with the implementation of Phase 1 of our Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan, which is set to break ground on Tuesday, September 7. We anticipate the renovations to the Five Farms clubhouse to last 10 months. As a reminder, the full scope of the project can be viewed in detail here. Once the interior design plan has been finalized, renderings of the finished spaces will be placed around Roland Park for members to view. Our goal throughout construction is to minimize the disruption to the member experience as much as possible. To ensure the safety of members and staff, Five Farms clubhouse operations will be limited to the Ladies’ Locker Room and Group Exercise Studio. These areas are only accessible through the main entrance. All other parts of the Five Farms clubhouse are prohibited from member access and use throughout construction. Please reference the Site Logistics Plan on page 8 for

information on accessing other areas of the Five Farms campus. To accommodate members who will continue to utilize our Five Farms amenities, our Horticulture, Food & Beverage, and Culinary Teams are transforming the Pool Café into Petite Farms Bistro—a casual À la Carte dining venue for lunch and dinner. Members will also have access to a modified Adirondack Experience. Due to construction on the porches, the Adirondack chairs and bar will be relocated by the scoreboard. Our Grounds Team has created a pathway across from the valet loop entrance to provide easy access to À la Carte dining at the Pool Complex. This year, the Club is extending the pool season through the end of September, provided we are appropriately staffed to operate safely. The Pool Complex will be open for swimming, Friday evening through Sunday. The Family Pool is now heated to provide a more comfortable experience during the fall and early spring seasons. Fitness, Golf, and Tennis operations at Five Farms will operate as usual with minor interruptions. The 1898 Grille at Roland Park will officially open on Friday, September 10. Reservations

for dining are recommended. All rules regarding reservations will apply. Due to weddings and other events rescheduled during the pandemic, there are select dates where the 1898 Grille will be unavailable to members. On these dates, the Club has set up reciprocal dining arrangements with The Center Club and Country Club of Maryland. Arrangements with other clubs are pending. BCC members will also receive an exclusive discount when dining at Atlas Restaurant Group’s new restaurant Perennial. As always, we endeavor to make BCC a favorite place for you and your guests. This sentiment remains during construction. Throughout the project, we will be communicating with you regularly and providing opportunities for “Sneak Peeks” at the progress on Phase 1. We are as excited as you are for this transformational project and what it means for the future of BCC. Until then, we welcome you to join us at our Renovation Celebration event in À la Carte on Saturday, September 4. Thank you for your continued support of Phase 1 of our Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan. Sincerely,

M. Kent Johnson, CCM General Manager/COO

Wondering where the contents of the clubhouse will go during Phase 1 construction? As we lead up to groundbreaking on September 7, everything in the clubhouse must be stored away or relocated for the duration of construction. To ensure the safekeeping of all trophies, paintings, and photographs of archival substance, the Archive Committee has contracted Crozier Fine Arts.

Crozier Fine Arts is a division of Iron Mountain Incorporated, the global leader in data storage and information management

services. The infrastructure of Iron Mountain uniquely positions Crozier to handle diverse and nontraditional collections. Crozier’s art handlers will be packing the items at Five Farms from Tuesday, August 31, through Thursday, September 2.

sofas, light fixtures, and more. We sincerely appreciate all of the members who participated in the auction. The Club raised a total of $11,952! All proceeds from the sale will go towards renovating the BCC staff breakrooms.

All clubhouse furniture (with the exception of the Ladies’ Locker Room and Group Exercise Studio) will go into storage or be relocated to our Roland Park clubhouse. As a means to repurpose or sell surplus furniture and fixtures, the membership was given an opportunity to bid on some of the Club’s well-loved furniture and fixtures during our online silent auction. This includes the Tap Room and Card Room bars,

If you won or purchased an auction item and have yet to retrieve it from the Club, please contact Clubhouse Services Manager Ben Fraczkowski at bfrazcowski@bcc1898.com to schedule a time for pickup. All remaining furniture will be removed from the clubhouse by Tuesday, September 7.

PRESERVATION OF THE

American Elms By Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture

Our Five Farms campus boasts 13 large American Elms, Ulmus americana, including the iconic specimens that line the clubhouse terraces. Relaxing with friends while sitting under the shade of these great trees has become an intrinsic part of life at Five Farms. The American Elm was the preeminent street tree in North America until Dutch Elm Disease was introduced in 1928. Of the estimated 77 million elms in North America in 1930, over 75% had been lost by 1989. The Club invests annually in protective measures to guard all our Elms against Dutch Elm Disease. The stand of trees in front of the clubhouse includes four American Elms and one Silver Maple. The age of these trees is unknown but estimated at 60 to 80 years old.

The Club decided early in the planning phases that these trees were a desired part of the Club’s Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan. In April 2020, the Grounds Team met with Carroll Tree Service to look at the proposed master plan and determine what impact the plan would have on the American Elms. The team at Carroll Tree Service are experts in the application of tree preservation measures, having worked closely on several important American Elm protection projects, including specimens at the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and Towson University. They directed us to tree preservation design expert Chris Cowles of Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., whose vast knowledge of tree protection measures and construction impacts would guide our efforts. They began by evaluating overall tree health

and then conducted a root impact study, including the use of ground penetrating radar and vacuum excavation to locate and map existing roots. We were able to determine where root loss would be expected and where mitigation efforts were needed.

Biennial macro-injection of fungicide to provide systemic protection against Dutch Elm Disease

approved by Horticulture Team in consultation with Wetlands, Inc. For example, cranes will lift in beams from the west side of the clubhouse to avoid impacting the tree canopy. Helical piles will be used instead of traditional footers, where possible, to prevent excessive excavation near critical structural roots. Hydrovacuum excavation and root pruning by certified arborists will replace conventional trenching within the critical root zone. The expansion of the mulched area, vertical mulch holes, and newly installed drip irrigation before it was mulched over

We began immediately to take proactive measures to improve the health of roots in the portions of the critical root zone that will be preserved. These steps included connecting our mulch circles into a full mulch panel, vertical mulching (drilling and filling with bio-char and other organic materials), and installing drip irrigation to provide regular moisture. We also applied a soil-injected bio-stimulant, which includes beneficial micro-nutrients and rhizosphere bacteria applied through a series of soil injections. These bacteria work with microorganisms already present in the soil to facilitate the uptake of nutrients— effectively “jump-starting” the recovery process.

The whole construction management process has been formulated with tree protection in mind. To access the construction areas that fall within the critical root zone of the trees, equipment will travel on a raised path comprised of geotextile root protection fabric, matting, and wood chips totaling approximately 14” thick. This specially engineered path is designed to disperse and absorb the impact of vehicles to avoid root compaction. In addition, high-visibility fencing will be erected around each tree to prevent encroachment of construction activities and equipment and keep traffic on the designated paths. Each phase that may impact the trees has been discussed and

Even with these protective measures, there is always a chance that a catastrophic weather event could occur (i.e., wind or ice storms) that could critically damage one or all of these trees. But with compliance and mindfulness from all stakeholders, our above-and-beyond approach should ensure the continued longevity of these graceful giants as we embark on the first phase of our Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan. We hope that we will be able to enjoy the American Elms for generations to come with these efforts.
