Great People Make Favorite Places

BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆

October Staff Member of the Month

Joe Hamilton, Golf Concierge Attendant

Joe’s commitment to enhancing the member experience is apparent every day. His kind demeanor, positive attitude, and eagerness to serve are something our members look forward to when pulling into the Golf Circle. During Phase 1 construction, we lost two major access points to the Golf House and had to relocate our Bag Drop to the parking lot for most of the 2022 golf season. As a result, golf members were required to walk much further to access our golf facilities. Joe took the challenge in stride and used a six-passenger golf cart to shuttle members to and from the lot, making that trek a little easier. Joe’s genuine approach to hospitality is truly something special, and we feel very fortunate to have him on our team.

Exceptional Leadership Award

Jenna has worked in a few Culinary positions at BCC, but she has made her mark as the Assistant Pastry Chef. She recently stepped up to lead the department while our Pastry Chef was on maternity leave. She led the team through some of our busiest events this year, including our Labor Day Celebration and Grand Reopening of the Five Farms clubhouse. She worked tirelessly to ensure the new dessert menu in À la Carte was beautifully presented while simultaneously making desserts for our many banquet events. Jenna is an integral part of the Culinary Team and has grown into her leadership role by creating outstanding desserts and being a true team player to her coworkers.

Thank You!

The entire staff of Baltimore Country Club extends our sincere appreciation for your contributions to the 2022 Staff Holiday Fund. We thank you for your continued support of BCC and look forward to seeing you around the Club in the new year!

Everyone is quick to make a resolution this time of year. The favorites are always along the lines of “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to quit (fill in your answer).” When trying to make positive change, at the first sign of discomfort we throw our hands up in the air and say “it’s too hard,” and revert to the easy, more comfortable way of doing things. We have all heard Albert Einstein's definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different

results. When achieving any of your typical New Year’s Resolutions, you can’t just do things the way you have been and expect better results. If you're not challenging yourself, you're not changing yourself.

So here is my challenge to you: get out of your own personal comfort zone in this New Year! Challenge yourself mentally and physically, and you will, without a doubt, be amazed at your accomplishments. You are going to have to put in the effort and get out of the box. Plus, it’s more fun and very rewarding!

Explore your surroundings, learn something new, try something different, and whatever you do, don’t sit around and wait for it to happen—make it happen! Make a promise with yourself that you will push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of, and you will be amazed at the results that are achievable when you put in a little good old fashioned hard work!

If you need a little extra motivation or guidance in helping you reach your fitness goals this year, your BCC Fitness & Wellness Team is here for you! ◆

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

Winter has arrived, as evident by the dormant IronCutter bermudagrass on the Driving Range field. To enhance the member practice experience throughout the winter, we apply Endurant turf colorant to the zoysiagrass target greens at the back range. These paints are applied to get the look of overseeding with cool season grasses, but at a fraction of the cost. While the Driving Range and West Course tees were established with bermudagrasses that were bred for cold tolerance, we still install turf covers on the Driving Range tees and tees that were established last summer. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent winter injury, covers provide the best level of protection for bermudagrass grown during periods of extremely low temperatures growing on a sand base. These special covers also allow air, water, and sunlight to penetrate, which acts like a greenhouse effect by increasing the surface and soil temperatures. Also, by leaving the covers on longer in the late winter and early spring, the covers have been shown to aid in the spring transition from the dormancy period.

As we prepare the courses for the 2023 season, one of the final practices we completed on the West Course greens was drill and fill aeration. This process drills holes up to 12 inches deep into the putting green on six-inch centers, removing soil and backfilling each hole with sand to create deep sand columns in the root zone. This is a proven method for modifying the root zone without totally rebuilding to improve turf quality, and greatly improve internal drainage on the portions of an entire greens that remain soft and wet following rain events.

On behalf of myself and the entire Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team, we sincerely appreciate your generosity with your donations to the Staff Holiday Fund. Have a great winter season. ◆

In addition to utilizing these covers on warm season grass, this fall marked the return of the family putting green, which was temporarily covered over pending completion of Phase 1 construction. The green was sodded with 007 XL creeping bentgrass, and a small approach was added utilizing low-mow Kentucky bluegrass. The green has been covered to aid in the maturation process, and we look forward to opening this green for member use next spring.

Introducing

For the last ten years, every March and April, our Golf Services and Grounds Maintenance teams conducted Golfer’s Informational Forums that provided members with information related to the golf courses and the upcoming golf season. Topics covered a variety of pertinent information, including staffing and course updates, weather affecting course conditions (why and how we manage these conditions), merchandise, golf events, golf group information, and more. Despite offering these forums in person and virtually to accommodate members in their winter destinations, most do not participate and miss out on this important information. This year, we are taking a different approach—Golfer’s University. Golfer’s University is an interactive online course that will cover all these topics in a fun, enjoyable, and educational manner using video and presentation slides.

Our Golf and Greens committees and Golf Team meet regularly to prepare and provide an exceptional golf experience. As a golf member, it is imperative that you understand your role in helping provide a great experience not only for yourself but all BCC golfers. Next month we will provide more detailed information on when the Golfer’s University course will launch so you can complete the class before making your first tee time of the season! ◆

EXCITING THINGS AHEAD FOR PADDLE TENNIS

Dear Paddle Players, Happy New Year! January is always an exciting month for paddle tennis. We are approximately halfway through the season, and the holidays are officially behind us. I am excited to say that we have a lot to look forward to in the second half of the season.

Participation in weekly clinics is at an all-time high, and we continue to add new programs each month. To date, the Learn-to-Play Paddle program has introduced over 50 members to the sport, and that number continues to grow. The drop-in matchplay program has also been a hit. Members of similar levels are paired together for competitive matchplay. Afterward, we enjoy food and beverages in the warmth of the Paddle Hut. I am happy to report that junior paddle has exploded in participation this season. We offer all-ages clinics twice per week. These are just a few of our exciting weekly offerings. The Paddle Tennis Club Championships kicked off in December and will continue through February. We have a record 30 teams participating in this season’s

championships. The championships will culminate in the Finals Night event on Saturday, February 25, followed by the Smash & Bash Racquets Banquet hosted that evening at Roland Park. All are invited to this wonderful celebration. The Paddle Men’s Club Road Classic is also held in February. The inaugural event was held last season and was a tremendous success.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of BCC's paddle tennis program. We will continue to put our best foot forward for the members and the program. Please take a look at the Racquets Calendar for a full list of paddle tennis programs.

See you on the paddle court soon! ◆
