Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
2020 Staff Member of the Year Jessica Klemm, Graphic Design Assistant
We congratulate Jess for being named 2020 Staff Member of the Year! She is a phenomenal member of the BCC Team and truly embodies our Core Four: Number 1: Do What’s Right, Not What’s Easy Jess is honest, dependable, and doesn’t hesitate to do what is asked of her. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked long hours to ensure our Communications Team created consistent, engaging content for our members. Number 2: Empowerment Through Opportunity When Jess is faced with a challenge, she is quick to brainstorm creative solutions or improve upon existing processes.
Number 3: Build Genuine Relationships Jess has learned so much in the last year, but she possesses a quality that cannot be taught—empathy. She doesn’t hesitate to help create a green folder story or assist other departments. Number 4: Be Extraordinary She is always eager to learn new skills. Most notably, after the departure of one of our team members, Jess did not hesitate to take on the responsibility of video editing with no prior experience. After taking an online course and watching YouTube tutorials, Jess now has the skill set of a seasoned video editor! Jess’ contributions to the Club are immeasurable and we are honored to celebrate all of her accomplishments!
March Staff Member of the Month
Kate Castor, Server and Banquet Captain We congratulate Kate for being named March Staff Member of the Month! She has been a crucial helping hand for our Food & Beverage Team by taking on the role as a Banquet Captain after learning the ins and outs of the position while she was a Server. Kate has also assisted with operational tasks, led events, and helped train fellow staff members—which is invaluable as we welcome our new summer season staff members! Her leadership skills, work ethic, and adaptability have made the Food & Beverage Team better as a whole.
Leadership Award Travis Peters, Director of Outside Services We congratulate Travis for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! Travis was promoted to Director of Outside Services in March 2021 and has already made a big impression on one of our members with his commitment to exceptional service. When a golf member requested new grips, Travis responded promptly and made the trip to Baltimore Golf. Unfortunately, the store did not have the color the member requested, and the member was unable to follow up with Travis with an alternative selection. So rather than leaving empty-handed, Travis made the executive decision to purchase a color that would match the member’s golf bag. The member was very impressed and appreciative of Travis’ attention to detail and good decision making. While this may be all in a day’s work for Travis, this level of service makes him a true leader and is a perfect example of why Great People Make Favorite Places. 1

ARCHIVES The original Roland Park clubhouse was first known as Roland Park Golf Club back in 1896 and was later recognized as Baltimore Country Club in 1898. Above and behind the first tee was the clubhouse’s semicircular veranda which had a spectacular view of the Jones Falls Valley. The shingle-style clubhouse, designed by the local architectural firm Wyatt & Nolting, was very much in keeping with early Roland Park styles. Unfortunately, the building was fire prone and suffered varying degrees of fire damage in 1905, 1912, and 1930. Sadly, on January 5, 1931, a devastating fire burned the clubhouse to the ground. A new federal style clubhouse was built on the same site, opening in 1933, which is still standing today. ◆ 3

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS January 1, 2021 – May 1, 2021 The Club introduced the Humm® feedback surveys in January 2021. It is our goal to exceed our Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places by providing impeccable service during each and every visit to the Club. The Humm® platform has provided us with live data of your feedback and overall Club experience, including experiences that may not have met your expectations, which we can learn from and improve on. In the past four months, our membership completed the Food and Beverage survey a total of 1,647 times with an overall score of 97.01%. In addition to providing us with live feedback and overall member sentiment, the Humm® platform also helped us meet our vision of the Simple Truth by tracking staff performance, which has enhanced our meetings, training, performance reviews, and goal settings. The survey questions include
server and manager presence and attentiveness, experience with the hostess upon arrival, menu variety, and food quality. The Club has deployed the Humm® software at our golf and Five Farms racquets facilities, which will help us gather data about members’ experiences with course conditions, Practice Facilities, Pace of Play, and staff. Please take the time to provide your feedback at the end of your dining, golf, or racquets experience. The Club will also introduce the Humm® software at our fitness and aquatics facilities by early June. ◆
Thank you to all the members that have completed the Humm® feedback surveys! Below are some wonderful comments we have received: “I brought my 95-year-old mother-in-law for lunch today to celebrate that we are both vaccinated. For both of us, it was our first time eating out in a year. It was wonderful to see Cynthia and she took wonderfully good care of us!” “Really happy with and proud of the entire staff.” “So happy Matt is back. He is an astute menu navigator and always a pleasant presence. The menu is diverse and bold and we appreciate Chef ’s diverse menu.” “One of the best meals I’ve had. You guys are getting better and better. Thank you because we love it here-our special place.”

A club of our size loses about
New
75
A, B, D Net Resident Membership: 13
It is important to note that the national benchmark for annual attrition at country clubs is between 4-7%. BCC falls at the lower end of that range. A club of our size loses about 70 members each year.
In October of 2020, we found that only 6.2% of eligible members proposed candidates over the last five years. Educating the membership and staff became a critical component of improving that proposal rate. The Membership Dashboard was introduced and is presented monthly on a committee level to provide measurable context to annual Club goals.
Educate
Ensuring an active and stable membership allows us to plan for the future while maintaining the membership experience that you expect. This past fall we started a research project that will set the stage for the future of BCC and strengthen the Club for generations.
Baltimore Country Club sets the standard for private clubs in the greater Baltimore area. We pride ourselves on our family-centric atmosphere, providing the highest level of service in exceptional facilities.
THE JOURNEY...
Full Season Golf Cap - 975
Partial Season Golf Cap - 125
Additionally, we have put policies in place that will ensure that all tee times made are honored; cancellations must be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to the scheduled tee time. Also, using other members as placeholders on the tee sheet is not permitted.
This past year saw record breaking rounds and the demand of tee times was felt by everyone. While it may feel that we have too many golfers, it is important to take into account the many factors at play last year. This past year kept so many of us apart, but one positive outcome was that it also brought everyone outside. So many of our members took to our golf courses for some much needed fresh air and a way to break up their virtual learning or endless slew of Zoom meetings. With restrictions easing and travel becoming a possibility again; we expect our courses to return to a more normal pace of play and demand following the Independence Day holiday.

Non-Resident/ National Golf Cap - 100
Last year we started using new analytic software, Qlik Sense. This software allows us to easily create and view Club analytics that enable us to perform at our best. One use case that has been very beneficial, is that we are now able to see how our members, in each category, utilize the golf course. From research completed in 2020, we found that our Non-Resident and National members on average, were playing 7.5 rounds of golf per year. Compared to our Full Season Golfers who average 34.3 rounds per year. In an effort to better structure the Full Season Golf Cap, we removed those Non-Resident and National golfers from the total and lowered the Full Season Golf Cap from 1,050 to 975. We have also capped our NonResident/National category at 100 golfers and Partial Season category at 125 golfers. We now have an active Full Season Golf Waitlist.

Responsible for reviewing and documenting membership proposals and subsequently making recommendations to the Board of Governors regarding the proposed candidates for membership.
ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE Assists the Director of Membership in identifying prospective members to join the club while maintaining a membership pipeline. The committee members also assist new members in getting acclimated with the Club.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
With a growing list of prospective members, we needed to ensure our committees were appropriately named and a clear and straightforward proposal process was presented. We’ve aligned these collaborative committees and their names with their charters to meet that goal.
Clarify Committees
Keeping a database of prospective qualified candidates known by current members will allow our committees to constantly be in the know with who in the area would be a great fit as a member. This list, maintained monthly, will allow the Club to have natural touch points for prospective new members. Created, maintained, and contacted by our members, this Pipeline will prove to be integral in maintaining our membership at a sustainable level.
The importance of our membership actively championing the Club to their friends and family is paramount knowing that every member who is elected, we effectively lose a member.
Membership Pipeline
70 members each year.
We thank you for your continued support and are excited for the bright future that we are securing for BCC.
Due to the recent unprecedented interest in membership, Baltimore Country Club is proud to announce that we currently have an active Membership Waitlist. Details regarding the waitlist protocol are forthcoming. With our new waitlist and Phase 1 of our Master Plan slated to begin on September 7, we will be revisiting the structure of our Entrance Fee schedules to align ourselves with like clubs across the country. BCC is on the verge of something big and we are so excited to have all of you along for this momentous journey.
Resident/Social Member Cap
1,825 Class A, B, & D
To ensure a bright and sustainable future for Baltimore Country Club, we have implemented a cap of 1,825 to our Class A, B, and D Resident/Social Members (currently 1,792). BCC once thought that the Club should strive for 2,000 A, B, and D members, but reviewing statistics over the years and more recently the learnings from how COVID-19 impacted the Club, it was decided that 2,000 is just too big. We analyzed recent years and considered how the Club performed at different membership counts. Referencing the year 2018 where we were close to 1,825 members, we decided that the Club could operate at a count significantly lower than 2,000. Our goal has never been to grow the membership; our goal has been to find a number that we feel appropriately fits the needs of the Club and our members. At 1,825, this allows the Club to fully fund depreciation which will position us well for future development initiatives. This cap is our commitment to prioritizing the precious balance between BCC’s financial viability and the maintenance of our exceptional level of service. BCC shouldn’t be built for big, it should be built for you.
...TO 1,825
We feel that with the restructuring and capping of our golf categories, COVID-19 restrictions lessening and new Club policies put in place to safe guard tee time reservations, our golf operations will continue to evolve to continually meet and exceed your needs.

I then moved back to Maryland and began my tenure at BCC in 2017 as the Director of Club Events, and have since then acquired Private Events. I truly love what I do and am dedicated to creating and helping members and guests create unique and memorable event experiences. In my spare time, I can be found with friends and family at wine festivals, road races, and triathlons, or at home scrapbooking and doing a puzzle. As an animal lover and unapologetic cat lady, I also collect donations for the ASPCA in the winter months.

GOLF
Congratulations, Lou! Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year
We would like to congratulate BCC member and University of Richmond sophomore Lou Baker for being named 2021 Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year! The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) is a collegiate athletic conference of schools who compete in the NCAA Division I. He was awarded the honor after a panel of the league’s 11 head coaches selected Lou in recognition of his performance during the 2021 season, when he finished in the top 15 in each of the Richmond Spiders’ four tournaments and posted the lowest stroke average by a Spider since 2017. This is a tremendous honor in the A-10 Conference and we could not be anymore proud of Lou! Keep up the great play and we look forward to watching Lou in his two final seasons at Richmond. ◆

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
PROJECTS COMPLETED THIS SPRING
by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper
• Cart path installation on #18 West
It’s hard to believe how quickly 2021 is moving along! Last month’s update was about the aeration that has taken place this spring on both the East and West courses. The aeration that was accomplished was a success despite a few weather challenges. As such, we were unable to dethatch fairways using the Wiedemann machine. Prior to aeration of the East greens, we did field a few questions about why we were aerating when conditions and weather were becoming perfect. Aeration is performed every year to improve turf health and playing conditions, and these practices are critical for the health of highly maintained grass. While the weather certainly plays a significant role in turf recovery, performing aeration when the weather favors turf growth leads to quicker recovery. This explains why aeration is performed when the weather and course are best. There is no denying that surface disruption occurs during aeration, and the greens do play differently. However, keep in mind that good playing conditions during the golf season result from our routine aeration practices despite the short-term inconvenience.
• The willow oak (pictured right) planted on the left of #7 rough replaces the two trees in decline (pictured left) on the left side near the green
Play this season has continued to be strong as golf remains one of the safest forms of recreation during the pandemic. Our rounds are up approximately 35 percent in March and April alone as we continue to see record rounds being played compared to our historical averages. These additional rounds of play mean more ball marks and divots on your courses. As such, our Grounds Maintenance Team spends a great deal of energy and resources trying to produce smooth and consistent putting surfaces. We appreciate your help and cooperation regarding course care and improving the overall golf experience here at the Club. ◆
The Key to Better Greens The proper technique for repairing ball marks is quite simple and requires only a few seconds of effort: 1. Insert any pointed tool at a 45 degree angle behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center of the ball mark 2. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center 3. Afterward, tamp the area down with your putter 16
June 2021
• Drainage work between #10 and #11 East. The grass planted between the holes is similar to the native fine fescue species planted throughout the courses (Reliant IV Hard Fescue, Ambrose Chewings Fescue, and Epic Red Fescue) • East fairway extensions on #7, #10, #16
Golden Rule Please follow the Golden Rule for divot recovery to ensure our fairways remain in top condition throughout the summer stress months: 1. A divot that is large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced 2. Every divot that is not replaced has no chance of survival. This is our best opportunity we have for recovery from divots
