Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
Staff Member of the Month JANUARY
Jacob McGowan, Junior Coordinator & Senior Racquets Professional Jacob McGowan was awarded January Staff Member of the Month because he has displayed and fully embodies Great People Make Favorite Places. In addition to carrying out his responsibilities exceptionally well, Jacob has found a way to volunteer and take on more tasks outside of his regular scope of work. Jacob’s proactiveness to recognize the demands of the department has resulted in unwavering exceptional services at BCC. Further, what makes Jacob a great staff member is that he continues to go above and beyond with a warm and professional nature. He provides an atmosphere of encouragement to other staff and a caring attitude towards our members. In addition to daily observations of Jacob, it is clear from the overwhelmingly positive feedback from members that Jacob has clearly demonstrated what it is to do great work and make Baltimore Country Club a favorite place.
Simple Truth Award Mark Jones, Assistant East Course Superintendent Erasmo Ambrosio, West Course Greenkeeper One day, as staff were commuting to work, many noticed a car broken down on Jenifer Road. A short while later, after our Team began their work assignments, Mark drove down Jenifer Road and noticed the vehicle was still broken down along the road. Mark returned to the shop and got the necessary tools to repair what looked like a flat tire. He also asked West Course staff member Erasmo Ambrosio to assist not only with repairing the tire, but also translating for the elderly occupants of the vehicle. After a few moments, Mark and Erasmo changed the tire and the persons were on their way and very appreciative of the assistance. It is selfless acts like these that make BCC staff members truly exceptional.

Monthly Memory Royalty at BCC
On October 13, 1941, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor attended a tea reception at Baltimore Country Club's Roland Park clubhouse. This was considered the social event of the era. Captain Henry T. Kaste, Chief of the traffic division of the Baltimore Police Department, estimated that more than 250,000 people lined the streets as the couple made their way from City Hall to Baltimore Country Club. Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, moved to Baltimore with her mother when she was an infant. At the age of 34, Simpson met Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, son of King George V, and uncle of Queen Elizabeth. When King George V passed away, Edward was next in line for the throne. Edward ended up abdicating the throne due to the controversy surrounding his relationship with American divorcee-Wallis Simpson. The pair got married in June 1937. ◆

MASSAGE THERAPY
WATER You Drinking? By Vanessa O’Brey, Health, Wellness, & Life Coach Have you ever wondered why most people consume a hot beverage in the morning? Yes, caffeine has something to do with it, but that’s not the only reason. Ayurvedic medicine states that drinking warm water in the morning helps stimulate digestion and blood flow to increase energy. Drinking cold water with your breakfast requires more energy from your body to warm up liquids and food, which takes longer to digest and assimilate. When it comes to cleansing the body of impurities, consuming adequate amounts of water is very important. It is recommended to drink warm water with a squeeze of lemon. This requires the least amount of energy for your body to assimilate. The lemon also helps to stimulate digestion and flush toxins. Other optional cleansing additives you can try are cucumber, mint, and cinnamon. Warm or hot water also helps move things along if you are constipated. Drinking warm water helps to stimulate blood flow and has a more soothing effect on the intestines than cold water.
The core body temperature becomes elevated during exercise. Sweating is one mechanism our bodies use to cool down, but we lose a lot of water and electrolytes, which need replenishing. Sipping on cold water during a workout both rehydrates the body and helps to cool down the core body temperature. When you’re overheated, drinking cold water can be a huge relief. Try squeezing some fresh lemon and adding a pinch of sea salt to help replenish lost electrolytes. ◆ For more health and wellness information, please contact Vanessa at vobrey@bcc1898.com.

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE The East Course is scheduled to open for the season on Friday, March 25. We are excited for you to see the results of our team’s hard work since the course closed in December. When the East Course opens, you may still see a few aeration holes from work completed in the winter. Cold temperatures did not allow the holes to heal completely over the winter season. The West Course will close March 28 through March 30 for green aeration and topdressing, along with solid tine fairway aeration. Recovery will take approximately three weeks since this work is being completed when soil and surface temperatures will still be cold. Green aeration on the East Course will occur May 2 through May 4, with solid tine aeration to be completed on the fairway surfaces.
• Split firewood for clubhouse and fire pit use • Staff training in turfgrass and landscape management • Sod projects including high traffic areas around greens, tees, and cart paths • Staff recruiting for the 2022 season • Serviced and performed preventive maintenance to all golf and grounds equipment Lastly, part of the scope of work for Phase 1 of the clubhouse includes disruption between the first tee and fairway of the East Course. This work involved digging nine pits or wet wells to manage the stormwater coming off the roofing structures of the building. This work, shown in the photo below, will be completed in time for the East Course opening.
The most significant improvements in the golf course are made during the offseason, especially since the weather was mild in December. The team focused on removing trees that were dead, dying, and under duress, while removing underbrush and trees in numerous areas to improve playability and growing conditions. These projects take a significant amount of time and labor to complete as our Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team prioritizes daily play and Club events. In turn, this leaves limited time for course improvements, especially during the 2021 season with near record rounds of play on both courses all the while being short staffed for most of the peak season. Even though our staff is reduced by over 50% during the winter, the real gains are achieved when man-hours are available, and work can be performed without interfering with daily play. Other work completed during winter months include: • Painted and refurbished course and grounds accessories utilized during the 2021 season • Landscape cleanup and pruning • Irrigation improvements and repairs • Pump station repairs and maintenance • Green, tee, and fairway aeration and topdressing

TIPS FROM THE PROS: The Serve Return By John Harriss, Assistant Squash Professional As the person receiving the serve, the first opportunity you have to influence the rally is with your service return. In most instances, a good serve return is a ball that is hit high on the front wall (approximately halfway between the service line and the top outline) and lands behind the service box. Ideally within the width of the service box. By aiming high, you buy yourself more time to get to the T and get set for your opponent’s return because the ball is too high for your opponent to volley. By hitting the ball deep and keeping it closer to the side wall, you also limit the shot possibilities of your opponent because of the width or depth of your shot. Then, by getting to the T, you put yourself in a position to volley and/or attack your opponent’s shot; giving you the advantage in the rally, and putting your opponent under pressure. 13
