Great People Make Favorite Places

BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Staff Member of the Month

JULY

Fahimeh Nabavi, Banquet Cook (Garde-manger)

With over 15 years of BCC service, Fahimeh is one of the unsung heroes of our Culinary Team! She is responsible for all Garde-manger tasks (prepares cold food: meats, fish, and salads). The dedication and commitment Fahimeh brings to her job is truly exceptional. Fahimeh consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her tasks are completed to the highest standard. Fahimeh’s meticulous attention to detail, especially when it comes to creating displays, is a testament to her genuine passion for what she does. Fahimeh is an example to the countless interns from all around the world who have had the privilege of being trained by her. We are honored to have Fahimeh on our team!

Exceptional Leadership Award

JULY

Wade Johnstone, Director of Squash

Wade has shown a tremendous amount of adaptability and dedication to his duties as the Director of Squash. Recently, Wade has helped our Tennis and Pickleball programming at Five Farms by stretching his workload to meet the demands of the Racquets Team at Five Farms. Being short-staffed throughout the summer, Wade has helped extensively in our summer junior programs and liveball. We are very proud to have witnessed how Wade’s leadership and teamwork skills have amplified our success this summer!

Exceptional Leadership Award

Michael Wilkinson, Sous Chef Tournant

One evening, our Dishwasher Rosa received news that her son had been hospitalized after an accident. In her rush to get to the hospital, Rosa accidentally entered the wrong Uber and ended up at a gas station. After hearing about the situation, Chef Mike, displaying remarkable kindness, tirelessly searched for Rosa until he found her, despite a communication barrier and her uncertainty about her location. Rosa explained that she needed to retrieve some essential documents from home before heading to the hospital. Without hesitation, Chef Mike drove her home, waited while she gathered the documents, and then drove her to the hospital. This journey extended late into the night, concluding around 2:00am. Chef Mike’s selflessness and support in this challenging time exemplify the camaraderie and compassion within our team.

SELF CARE

MEET HEATHER JOHNSTONE

Heather Johnstone, L.Ac., received her Master of Acupuncture (M.Ac.) degree from Emperor’s College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Santa Monica, California. The rigorous four-year program focused on acupuncture, herbology, western medicine, pharmacology, and nutrition. Heather graduated summa cum laude. She is National Board Certified and a Diplomate of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She has practiced in hospital settings, including the Arthur Ashe Medical Center on the University of California Los Angeles campus.

We are excited to announce the return of Thai Yoga Bodywork (formerly Thai Yoga Massage) and introduce our newest Well-Being service—acupuncture!

The Well-Being Center is located on our Five Farms campus between the Pool Complex and the Fitness Center.

ACUPUNCTURE

The benefits of acupuncture are far-reaching. Although it is said that, “traditional acupuncture does not treat symptoms; it treats people,” the World Health Organization of the UN lists over 40 symptoms that acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating.

Some of the common difficulties for which people seek acupuncture are:

▶ Addictions

▶ Allergies & Asthma

▶ Arthritis

▶ Back & Neck Pain

▶ Depression & Anxiety

▶ Digestive Disorders

▶ Headaches & Migraines

▶ Infertility

▶ Insomnia

▶ Menstrual Difficulties

▶ Symptoms of Menopause

▶ Postoperative & Chemotherapy Nausea

▶ Postoperative Dental Pain

▶ Stress

▶ Stroke Rehabilitation

▶ Weight Loss

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Acupuncture is often described as virtually painless or far less painful than plucking a hair. The sensations that follow range from nothing at all to mild tingling or a slight numbness. These sensations subside once the needles are removed. The needles used for acupuncture are significantly smaller than the standard hypodermic needle, do not draw blood, and are solid, not hollow.

Returning to her hometown of Baltimore, Heather has been practicing acupuncture in three locations throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area for 20 years. In addition to her private practice, she is researching the potential interactions between western pharmaceuticals and Chinese herbs. Through acupuncture, she hopes to focus equally on relieving existing symptoms and preventing disease by cultivating health.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEEDLES?

Acupuncture needles are very thin, about the thickness of a human hair. The finest quality stainless steel, disposable, presterilized needles are used. These needles are FDA approved, used one time during your appointment and disposed of.

WHAT ARE ACUPUNCTURE SIDE EFFECTS?

When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner, acupuncture is safe, effective, and free from adverse side effects. A sense of relaxation and well-being often occurs during and after treatments. While undergoing therapy for one ailment, other problems may resolve concurrently. This is a common side benefit that again demonstrates the value of balancing the internal energy within the entire person.

SESSION FEE

60 minutes - $90

Availability: Mondays & Wednesdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm (Appointments required)

For more information or to schedule a session, contact Heather at hjohnstone@bcc1898.com.

WE CARE ABOUT YOUR

THAI YOGA BODYWORK

Thai Yoga Bodywork (formerly Thai Yoga Massage) is back with Certified Thai Yoga Bodywork Practitioner

Lainey Baer!

Enjoy the benefits of relaxation, massage, yoga, and energy work in this truly unique experience to connect the body and mind through the breath. You will fully relax and let go of physical and emotional stress while your body is guided into gentle stretching followed by massage along the meridian lines in the body. You will leave feeling relaxed, restored, and rejuvenated.

The Thai Bodywork Practitioner presses and kneads the muscles with their hands, feet, and forearms, synchronized with the breath, and fluently moves and twists your body into various stretches and yoga postures. The bodywork sessions are given on a memory foam mat in four positions: lying supine, side-lying, lying prone, and seated.

The recipient should wear loose, comfortable clothing that they can stretch in. While relaxing, the client may become cooler; wearing long sleeves, socks, and an optional blanket is recommended to stay comfortable.

This technique differs from a traditional massage but has many benefits to help heal your body:

⊲ Pain & Muscle Tension Relief

⊲ Increased Flexibility

⊲ Improved Range of Motion

⊲ Deep Relaxation & Stress Relief

⊲ Increased Energy Levels

⊲ Improved Circulation & Lymphatic Flow

SESSION FEES

30 Minutes - $60

60 Minutes - $95

90 Minutes - $120

For more information or to schedule a session, contact Lainey at lbaer@bcc1898.com.

SCENARIO 1

If you are a player who absolutely hates missing the shot to the left. Set up on that side of the tee box to eliminate the left side. If you tee it up on that side, you will open up more of the right side of the hole.

TIPS FROM THE PROS:

LEARN TO master YOUR TEE SHOTS

If you’re guilty of trying to make a driver swing change in the middle of your round like most, you’ve probably realized that it isn’t the greatest way to play. Instead of trying to make mechanical changes, try playing with the shot that you have for that day and take advantage of your surroundings instead. Most tee boxes are wide enough to set up in a variety of locations, so let's figure out which side is the correct side for you. In general, whatever side you fear hitting to, you will go to that side of the tee box.

SCENARIO 2

If the right side of the hole makes your blood boil, try teeing it up on the right side of the tee box so you’ll be more inclined to aim out towards the left side.

SCENARIO 3

The middle of the tee box works best if your miss is minimal both ways and if you’re teeing off with a shorter club.

BONUS TIP

Did you know that you can set up with your feet outside of the tee markers? As long as the ball itself is teed up within the parameters of the markers, it is completely legal. As extreme as this may be, it comes in handy if the teeing ground is uneven or if there are divots all over.

14 October 2023 GOLF

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

Fall is the ideal time to prepare the courses for the next golf season, and this starts with core aeration and sand topdressing of greens and bentgrass tees on the East Course.

These vital maintenance practices will be completed on the greens as follows:

▶ West Course Closed: October 31 through November 3 for aeration

▶ East Course Closed: November 7 through November 10 for aeration and dethatching

▶ East and West Course fairways to be core aerated the week of November 27

Fall is the best time to repair your lawn following the summer months with cool-season species such as turf type tall fescue due to:

▶ Shorter daylight hours

▶ Cool nights and warm days that are ideal for germination and establishment from seed (60-75 degrees)

▶ Lack of weed and disease pressure

▶ Abundance of natural moisture

Additionally, we will be seeding perennial ryegrass on our bermudagrass Driving Range tees. This is part of a two-grass system strategy that utilizes the warm-season grasses in the hot summer months and cool-season grass in the cool months of fall, winter, and spring. Throughout the fall, our team will be seeding and sodding thin/bare areas affected by the stress of this summer throughout the property. In addition, we will be aerating and seeding areas in the roughs that are thin due to high volumes of cart and maintenance traffic throughout the season, including around the clubhouse and grounds.

In mid to late August, we began observing leaves falling from the large poplar trees between holes #1 and #2 East. What is causing this to happen? These symptoms have been attributed

COURSE TREE UPDATES

to root stress, including drought conditions brought on by hot and dry weather in the summer, which is why it is commonly observed from late June through August. Although it can be quite striking to have your tree drop its leaves, this rarely affects the tree's overall health. Some trees will develop these symptoms each year, like clockwork, and not show any other symptoms of plant decline. If you notice scattered leaves intermittently turning yellow, watering the tree to mitigate drought stress is best. However, suppose you are seeing all the leaves on an entire limb or even the whole tree turning color or are observing limb dieback. In that case, there is likely something else causing stress to the tree, whether it is a root or trunk infection, a borer infestation, or damage to the trunk and roots.

Speaking of trees, while the West Course was closed on Mondays this past summer, we removed dead trees on holes #6 and #11. The dead large Pin Oak on #6 will be replaced by a hardwood tree. We will also be replanting a hardwood tree on #4 West this fall to replace a distressed tree that was removed this spring. As a reminder, we can experience frost during October when the nighttime and morning temperatures (the coldest part of the day) will drop to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms very sharp ice crystals. Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animals on rigid, frozen turf ruptures the cells within the plant, and this causes injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times may be necessary due to this weather event. Have a great fall, and we look forward to seeing you at the Club.

RACQUETS

FALL/WINTER JUNIOR RACQUETS

We are excited to announce the fall/winter Junior Racquets schedule. We have designed the program to include squash, paddle tennis, and tennis for our junior players this winter. The aim of this season is to promote racquet skills across the board for all players. Opportunities for All-Stars (ages 5-9) and Academy (ages 10+) players range from Monday through Sunday for all three sports. Our Tiny Tots (ages 3-5) can still learn valuable racquet and hand-eye coordination skills in our extended clinic times on Sundays. By utilizing the facilities at Roland Park, we are able to think outside the box and arrange clinics that will keep your kids engaged and involved in racquets at BCC.
