Greetings! It is a pleasure to greet you, as the Tennessee State Director of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Tennessee is comprised of tremendous Zetas, Amicae and Youth who are energized, excited and committed to making a difference. We embody the spirit of service. As you peruse thorough this newsletter and souvenir journal you will receive a glimpse of the many ways the Tennessee Zeta family share that spirit while providing service throughout the state as we have done for the past 80 years, since receiving our first charter in Tennessee. As we put in countless dollars and hours of helping other people excel, we remain focused by Building on the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Path. Therefore each Zeta, Amicae, Youth and all of our community partners are to be commended for making a difference in Tennessee and in moving Zeta forward. Thank you for all you have done and will do. Elegant East Tennessee On August 10, 2013, members of Nu Zeta Chapter and Pi Epsilon, participated in the 3rd annual Back To School Health and Wellness Fair. This event provided lowincome families with community resources, free health screenings, education regarding the importance of preventative health and wellness services and provided backpacks and school supplies for school-age children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them. Nu Zeta and Pi Epsilon members volunteered with registration, at the backpack station and serving meals. NZ had the pleasure of working with and getting to know the ladies of the Serenity Shelter. The Serenity Shelter for women, provides biblically-based residential recovery services, case management, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, life skills classes and refuge from abusive relationships for women who are seeking help. Nu Zeta threw a birthday party for the residents of the Serenity Shelter, serving cupcakes, punch and birthday gifts to all the residents. Nu Zeta Chapter is dedicated to working with this group of ladies in on-going efforts to make a difference in the lives of these residents.
Middle Tennessee Pi Zeta Chapter held it’s Biennial Blue Revue
Scholarship Program on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the World Baptist Center in Nashville, Tennessee. News Channel 5’s Marcus Washington, member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated served as the emcee for the event. This year’s theme: “I.M.A.G.E.S.” stands for Integrity, Motivation, Attitude, Grace, Excellence and Service, which are all a part of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. exemplifying Finer Womanhood. As the contestants were preparing for the different acts throughout the program, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, guest soloist, sang two songs as the entertainment. There were four beautiful young ladies competing for the title of Miss Blue Revue 2013: Alexis Bowers, Dawn Burton, Breayant Riley and Augotonia Coleman. With the help of our judges, they were able to crown President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Tennessee Youth Auxiliary Groups’ very own, Augotonia Coleman, Pi Zeta’s Archonette as Miss Blue Revue 2013.
On July 27, 2013, in conjunction with the Men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.-Eta Beta Sigma Chapter and Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter assisted with a shipment to Mexico. We had about 20 volunteers total from both organizations. The volunteers helped unload, sort and pack medical supplies for the Mexico shipment. We were able to load up two pallets of various supplies and constructed shelving in the warehouse. Our goal is to make this a monthly service project for both organizations and all chapters in the area in effort to assist the world by creating a stronger bond and presence in the community for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Middle Tennessee Psi Phi Zeta Chapter in partnership with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc
(Brentwood Chapter) and The Brentwood Leadership Foundation, held our 1st annual Williamson County Minority Health Fair at Freedom Middle School. The health fair was a great success! This was a great opportunity for us to show unity between greek letter organizations. Twenty-seven vendors provided education / awareness along with a number of health screenings including: HIV, allergy screenings, blood pressure testing, body mass index testing, chiropractor exams, dental screening, diabetes information, mammogram screenings, prostate education, sickle cell screening, vision screening and well care exams. We are looking forward to making next year’s health fair even better. Psi Phi Zeta adopted a 2 mile stretch of road along Highway 31 in Thompsons Station; TN. Highway 31 is a busy stretch of road in Williamson County. As a new chapter it is important to be visible within our community.
Our signs are posted near the high school and new industrial and residential developments. We plan to complete cleanups quarterly and have used the schedule times to bond as a chapter. We walk, talk, and laugh all while promoting Zeta and doing our part to Keep Tennessee Beautiful.
Middle Tennessee Rho Alpha Zeta Chapter has been displaying and fostering the principals of Zeta
through out Hermitage and Davidson County. Service has been on the forefront for this Ravishing chapter. PAZ promoted social action by encouraging voter registration within lowincome communities in the J. Henry Hale Apartments. Sorors canvassed door to door, set up a registration table nearby Watkins Community Center, and gained 17 new registered voters. We participated in the Nashville Cares AIDS Walk which promotes AIDS awareness and raises funds for Nashville Cares. Nashville Cares is the oldest and largest non-profit organization in Tennessee and it is Middle-Tennessee’s leading provider of AIDS prevention and care services. The chapter’s team met the participant goal, completed the 3.1-mile long walk route, and raised $335.00 for Nashville Cares. Project S.E.E. is a community service segment of the Samaritan Ministries of the Temple Church that provides tutoring, mentoring, and summer enrichment for youth of low-income families. PAZ supported the program with a donation of 12 winter coats for selected Project S.E.E. students. A partnership has been developed with ’The Next Door’. It is a state funded organization that “provides services designed to address the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of women in substance-abuse crisis.” Members collected and delivered 5 Welcome Packages consisting of 75 Personal Care Items for new residents of The Next Door. A seminar regarding breast cancer awareness was also held at The Next Door. We also participated in the annual March for Babies. The PAZ team consisted of 6 members and the chapter raised $375.00 via cash and online donations. In August PAZ participated in the 100 City Day of Action Vigil for Trayvon Martin at the Capital. Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood is always near our hearts at our various activities. It was displayed at the Holiday Party. It was an afternoon of planning, potluck, and a healthy game of Dirty Santa. Mayor Karl Dean and PAZ supported Soror Mia Howard, founder of Intrepid College Prep Charter School, at the Intrepid Dedication ceremony. RAZ’s premiere scholarship fundraiser is our Praise and Mime Showcase. It is a gospel dance competition and showcase for churches in Nashville, Tennessee and surrounding areas to display their artistry and share the word of GOD and praise thru music, dance, and movement. This event raised funds for scholarships and increased exposure of Zeta Phi Beta to the community. As a result of these efforts, the 2013 Dr. Bettye Knuckles and Lisa Ray $1000.00 College Scholarship Award was presented to Pearl Cohn scholar, Aaliyah Mathis.
Middle Tennessee Rho Mu Zeta Chapter, located in Clarksville TN, has been a longstanding presence in the Greater Clarksville community. In its 13 years of existence, Rho Mu Zeta has grown from five to twenty-five members and actively participates, at least three times a year, in street clean-up activities. Since 2010, Rho Mu Zeta has maintained their 2 mile stretch of highway on College and University Streets. Each year this portion of the adopted highway is part of the route for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. march held in downtown Clarksville. Thanks to repaving projects completed by the city, Rho Mu Zeta's adopted highway is now safe for all auxiliary groups to participate in its clean up. They are the proud sponsors of Gamma Nu and three youth auxiliaries’ who often assist with beautification efforts. In December , Rho Mu Zeta partnered with Community Outreach Christian Ministries (COCM) to give away clothing to men, women, and children in need. In an effort to meet the basic needs of our community, sorors cleaned out their closets along with COCM members and donated well over 200 clothing items to be distributed. PMZ and our Amicettes hosted a Self Esteem Does Matter seminar entitled “Beautiful… Inside and Out.” Young ladies ages 9-18 were invited to participate along with their mothers. The first part of the program included discussions about life, bullying, and how to carry oneself as a young lady. Scripture (Psalm 139:14) was shared with the participants to help them understand that we are all “fearfully and wonderfully made.” The second portion was led by a skin care consultant to teach women and young ladies how to properly care for their skin. In making its own history, Rho Mu Zeta is home to Zeta Phi Beta's National Military Attaché, Natasha Clarke; Tennessee State Life Member Coordinator, Stephanie Lockett-Peeler and former Ms. Zeta Tennessee, Ms. Zeta South Central Region, and Ms. Zeta Phi Beta International, Erin Lynch.
West Tennessee Alpha Eta Zeta Chapter has kept busy since
our last state meeting shining our Zeta light across Memphis, TN. SCHOLARSHIP AHZ started the sorority year by distributing numerous schools supplies to students at our annual Health Fair. We implemented Grand Wright’s Adopt-A-School Initiative by adopting Hamilton Middle School where we provided information to the students about the dangers of hazing and bullying. We also recognized the honor students with a pizza and dessert party, showed our appreciation to faculty by providing breakfast and goodies, and we beautified the campus. The AHZ DOVE Foundation, Inc. also promoted scholarship this year by awarding scholarships to promising youth in the Memphis and hosting our annual ACT workshops to prepare area youth for standardized testing. SERVICE When it comes to service, AHZ can never do too much! Service projects included several Z-HOPE initiatives and the establishment of a stretch of highway through the Adopt-A-Highway program. Other projects included donating items to a local shelter, spending time with the elderly over the holidays to strengthen our Elder Care initiative, and the AHZ DOVE Foundation, Inc. partnering with area organizations to host our annual Domestic Violence Forum. AHZ’s Breast Cancer Campaign was featured in a local magazine and AHZ showed a strong presence at the “Justice For Trayvon Martin” vigil held in Memphis. SISTERLY LOVE Various bonding activities occurred all year long to promote togetherness within the chapter and help sorors get to know others better. Activities included movies, a sisterhood retreat, tailgating with other chapters at the Southern Heritage Classic, Bluau, game night, dining out, and caroling. We also supported Soror Valencia Nelson during the TN March of Dimes Day on the Hill. AHZ welcomed new members in the last fall and this spring. FINER WOMANHOOD Our very own Soror Donna R. Williams was appointed as the TN State Director and AHZ has been busy providing support and encouraging her during her administration. We enjoyed the opportunity to represent Zeta with Grand Mary Breaux Wright during her visit to St. Jude. This is just a glimpse of the year AHZ had. We look forward to continuing to answer Zeta’s call.

West Tennessee Chi Lambda Zeta Chapter continues
to strive and ex-
hibit the principles of Zeta Phi Beta sorority through Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood in Bartlett, TN. In the fall of 2012, our chapter was happy to welcome three new members Sorors Stephanie Boyce, LaTosha Brown and LaKesha Moore our “Three Shades of Blue.” We were also delighted to welcome our Spring 2013 new intakes, Sorors Elisha Black, Janice Gaston, Luey Rhodes, Timberly Moore, and Angelia Davis –Webster the “ Five Flamboyant Flames.” We continue to be called on by community leaders and organizations to provide our services throughout Shelby County because of our dedication and commitment to the community. Our chapter works throughout the sorority year, as well as during the summer months, to lend a helping hand to those in need. Some of the community services we have participated in this year are as follows: Fans for Seniors, Elder Care/ Abuse Awareness, Mud Island Halloween Event,
Prematurity Awareness Sunday and Feed the Need -Thanksgiving event. Our chapter work is continuous, and we do not hesitate to lend a “Zeta” hand. We received the Jesse H. Turner Community Service Award from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. -Memphis Alumni Chapter during their Founder’s Day Program January 2013 for our efforts in the community . CLZ also received recognition and awards during the March of Dimes Awards Ceremony. We supported and participated in various services throughout the community. Chi Lambda Zeta members volunteered their time in various projects. We donated fans to seniors. We purchased blankets, socks, and underwear for the homeless during the winter months. The ladies of Chi Lambda Zeta donated monies to the March of Dimes, March for Babies 4K Walk. We served as proctors for Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Plan (TCAP). In October we participated as angels to children and adults in St. Ann Special Athletes Fun Day, and we provided infant layette items to our Stork’s Nest.
Mu Sigma Chapter is excited to begin the new year on the
campus of Tennessee Technological University. We have been working hard to spread the light of Zeta. Last semester we welcomed two new sorors, Kristin Washington and Jacquelyn Walker, into our chapter. We started off this semester with our annual Greek Mystique on campus. We hold this event to answer questions any non Greeks may have about Greek life or an organization in general, as well as to break the common stereotypes non Greeks may have. This year we plan to focus on creating awareness of subjects on campus. This month we put the spotlight on childhood cancers. Each Tuesday and Thursday, we passed out ribbons and candy to promote the awareness of childhood cancers throughout Tech. Next month we plan to promote the awareness of Breast Cancer on campus. We also have plans to begin collaborating with a local school in the future. We plan to work with the students after school in math. We look forward to all of our current and future events to highlight Zeta!
Undergraduate Connection Rho Gamma Chapter strives in building on the principles of Zeta while blazing new paths! Within the past school year, the chapter has totaled 100+ hours of service for the University of Memphis campus and community. Beginning with our October 2012 Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, Rho Gamma was able to donate $500 for the Strides for a Cure philanthropy with the help of the University of Memphis students and the Phi Beta Sigma chapter. Our signature projects are our “Big Sister, Little Sister” program with Southern Ave. Charter School of Memphis, TN and our Boy’s and Girl’s Club tutoring initiative. Other activities include our Domestic Violence forum with the Family Safety Center and HIV awareness table during our 2013 April interest week. We were recognized at the 2012 TN State Conference for promoting at least 6 of the 7 national anti-hazing initiatives during our FWDH kickoff. Rho Gamma was selected as the “2013 NPHC Chapter of the Year” and given the “Community Service Award” at the U. of Memphis for our dedication to service and scholarship on campus. We are proud to support Soror Alelia Higgenbottom, who will be serving as the U. of Memphis NPHC president for the 2013-2014 school year. With 10 active members, we look forward to continuing the highest standards set by our Founders!
Epsilon Alpha Chapter
welcomed 18 new members to the sisterhood. The campus of Tennessee State University was excited with the new presence of Blue! We participated in a service project , Back to School Bash at Hopewell Baptist Church. The kids enjoyed receiving all of the supplies. We welcomed Freshman back to campus with so sweet treats. Over the summer we participated in the Nashville Greek Picnic and we came in 2nd Place. We also participated in the annual March of Dimes Walk.
Undergraduate Connection Kappa Gamma Chapter is always on the move at Fisk University!! From the weekly “Word 2 the WiZe”, designed to introduce the campus to new and descriptive words, to “ZUMBA with the Zetas” held monthly to promote physical fitness, we are always looking to get our peers involved. More of our chapter’s staple events include our Mr. Zeta Phi Beta Pageant, the Freshmen Basket Raffle, and our Zeta Sweets bake sale. This year our chapter plans to Adopt-a-Bus Stop that we will care for weekly, as well as do more collaborations with other organizations. With focus on these aspects and our national programs, we are positive that our year will be successful.
Undergraduate Connection Iota Upsilon Chapter was founded March 27th, 2013, on the campus of Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. We are the first and only sorority of the National Pan-Hellenic Council at Bethel . Since our chartering, we have been active in many service events. One of our very first service events was a Back to School Shoe Drive hosted by the Samaritan Purse, The Salvation Army, and Cornerback of the New Orleans Saints, Jabari Greer. This community service project was a very humbling experience for us. We washed the children’s feet, provided them with shoes for the school year, and prayed for them before they departed. Other service events before the conclusion of the Spring Semester included: BU Sickle Cell Blood Drive with the American Red Cross, and a T-Shirt Drive for ladies that receive services through Thistle Farms. In June, we had three sorors attend the Regional State Conference, in which we were all first time attendees. We were really blessed to be a part and graciously humbled to meet our Madame Grand Wright. The Illustrious Ladies of the Iota Upsilon Chapter returned to campus mid August. Upon our arrival, we participated in the Freshman Carnival hosted by Bethel University Student Activities and Greek Life Offices. For this event we were accompanied by our Gamma Alpha Mu brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. During the carnival we set up a booth with blue and white decorations, along with games and prizes. So far in September, we have attended all required Student Government Association and Greek Council meetings. We've had two Sorors appointed by the Relay for Life Chairman to serve as Activities and Spirit chair of the Bethel Relay. Our relay is set for the Spring, but we are working diligently campus wide, to make it more effective than years prior. We're currently in the stages of working to partner with Word of Deliverance Ministries, which is under the direction of Pastors, Anthony and Tawonna Ballard. We attend WODM the fourth Sunday of each month as a chapter. Once we officially adopt them, we plan to establish a mentoring program for young ladies, ages 6 to 19. We also plan to volunteer at least twice A.D. month to help them with their new academic tutoring, after school program. We are looking forward to volunteering during activity hours at the McKenzie Nursing Home soon. We have more things planned for the remainder of the month and bigger projects throughout the semester, such as: Finer Friday Makeover events and self esteem builders, Study Sessions with the Zetas, Queen Esther Spa Nights for the young ladies at WODM, community outreach projects for families of children with Autism, and Breast Cancer Awareness events, and much more!
Undergraduate Connection Pi Epsilon Chapter kicked off the year by participating in the annual University of Tennessee’s InVOLvement Fair. They also implemented a new program entitled, “Sapphire Leadership Program”, in hopes to mentor and guide underclassman women through their undergraduate collegiate years. For the week of September 23, 2013, we participated in UT’s anti hazing awareness week.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has announced a new national partnership with National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Call to Service for St.Jude initiative. This partnership has a huge significance because it is critical that we continue to educate communities about the importance of resources and treatment for pediatric cancer, sickle cell screening and treatment for the disease as well as research aimed at improving the quality of life for those living with sickle cell disease! President Wright joined the NPHC Council of President’s as they enjoyed a two-day visit to St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. During this visit she had the opportunity to tour the hospital and visit the patients. West TN members were fortunate to participate in an opportunity to learn more about the initiative. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Joins Fight Against Elder Abuse The Zeta Elder Care Initiative was launched in June in chapters across the country. “One of the needs … no; the rights … of our older adults is to age with dignity and live free of violence and abuse,” writes Zeta Phi Beta International President Mary Breaux Wright in an online news release. “The latest research indicates one in 10 older adults are abused annually in our country. Older adults who have worked hard their entire lives, who have raised children, who have fought for their country, who have done so much for our nation should not have to live under the specter of abuse.” As part of the Elder Care Initiative, Zeta sorority members are partnering with the Ageless Alliance to raise awareness of elder abuse. They are holding classes, distributing educational material and reaching out to potential victims of abuse. Members traveled to Washington, D.C. on September 18-19 for “Zeta Day on the Hill,” where they talked to members of Congress about elder abuse, raising awareness and prevention. “We plan for college, career, marriage and other things we deem vital in our lives as we age and progress,” writes T. Diane Surgeon, who is helping to implement the Zeta Elder Abuse Initiative nationwide, in the New Journal and Guide Online. “We do not prepare for long term care once we retire. Most of us, if we own one, want to stay in our homes, but what if you can’t afford or are physically unable to do so safely with a good quality of life.”
Zeta Phi Beta Partners with Operation Homefront Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has partnered with Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit that provides emergency financial assistance and other assistance such as entertainment, programs, counseling and/or recovery support to all service personnel, the families they leave behind, and the Wounded Warriors when they return. Members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. are challenged to donate a minimum of $11.11 towards this fundraising initiative. The $11.11 has significance as it is the date and time (Nov 11, 1918 at 11:00am) that the Armistice took effect to end World War I. November 11th has come to be known as Veterans Day, a day in which we honor ALL Military Members, past and present, living and deceased. All chapters that donate funds to this most worthy cause will be recognized at the National kick off of Zeta National Military Week, Sunday, November 10th-Sunday, November 17th. WHERE IS YOUR ZETA HEART?? Part I of 2013 Reclamation began on Founders Day, January 16 and through the end of Finer Womanhood Month. Part II has begun with chapters back in session after the summer break. Yes Sorors, you can still reclaim members in the fall. The State of Tennessee has many Sorors who are inactive. Many are just waiting for a helping hand to find their way back home. The hammer has been dropped and the challenge around the state is on. Here’s some tips to get you started reclaiming our Sisters: -Invite them to a chapter meeting.
-Extend an invitation to a chapter event and perhaps purchase the ticket for them. -Invite them to a service project. -Invite them to a social outing with the chapter. -Keep them informed of events by emailing them reminders, flyers and other chapter information. -Reach out to you’re a soror your haven’t talked to and say hello! -Prorate or waive local operating dues. -Remind them of the Centennial Celebration in 2020, a historic and monumental occasion. -Reclamation fees can be obtained from your local chapter or State Director. Just envision if every Soror reclaimed a Soror, how this would not only be a glorious thing for the State but for the entire sisterhood.
