Property information

Occupation and code of conduct

The person whose name appears on the Booking Form is responsible for the decent and correct behaviour of all members of the group. Should clients behave in a manner that is not considered to be civilised, Engel & Völkers Menorca reserves the right to ask the client and their party to vacate the property.

The number of persons staying in the house must not exceed its capacity, unless previously agreed and the corresponding extra payment made. In the event that Engel & Völkers Menorca discovers otherwise, the clients will be asked to vacate the property.

Change of accommodation due to force majeure

Although it is unlikely that we will make changes to confirmed arrangements, Engel & Völkers Menorca reserves the right to relocate clients to a similar standard property due to unforeseen circumstances.

Cleaning service

If your booking is for more than 14 nights, a weekly change of bed linen and towels will be provided, as well as a general cleaning (communal areas and bathrooms). Unfortunately, we are unable to specify when the cleaning will be carried out. If the cleaning service is refused entry into the property, they will not return.

Outdoor furniture

Please take care of all cushions on chairs and sun loungers. Cover them if you use sun cream or if your swimming costume is wet.

It is forbidden to take cushions, pillows, mattresses or sheets, etc. out of the house.

If it rains, please enter all mattresses, cushions and soft furnishings to prevent them from deteriorating. A charge will be deducted for damage caused by non-compliance.

Clients are responsible for all sunshades, be sure to close them if leaving the property, during the night and when it is very windy. Any breakage will be charged to the client.

Smoking

Smoking inside the property is prohibited.

Cigarettes must be properly extinguished and the butts thrown into the rubbish bin, never on the ground. In case of non-compliance, part of the security deposit will be deducted.

Rubbish

Guests and their visitors must take care of the rubbish and recycling, using the rubbish bin provided for this purpose, and must not leave any type of waste in communal areas or in any other areas of the property. On your last day of stay please remove all rubbish depositing it in the appropriate public bins in the street or nearby.

Water

We recommend that you drink bottled water due to the high mineral content of the tap water.

Swimming pools

Make sure you know the depth of the pool.

Parents are reminded to supervise their children at all times. The pool is cleaned regularly, do not attempt to interfere with the chemical balance of the pool water. Remove excess sun cream before using the pool.

Sanitation

Do not dispose of cooking oil, food or personal care items in sinks or toilets. Drains are easily blocked.

Ants

Ants can be a problem during the summer months, they are attracted to any leftover food. We recommend that you are meticulous in keeping worktops, floors, terraces and barbecue areas clean, free from even the smallest food or drink residue. Ant sprays and powders can be purchased in supermarkets, however, be careful with children as they can be highly poisonous.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can also cause a nuisance so we recommend that you take precautionary measures. Sprays and powders can be purchased in supermarkets, however, be careful with children as they can be highly poisonous.

Electricity

In most areas, the main supply is 220 volts so UK 240 volt electrical devices should work.

The fuses and trip switch are normally located by the front door. If the power goes out, check that all switches are up and that the black, square button is pressed in.

We ask that unnecessary lights, especially exterior lights, are switched off when not needed.

Hot water

Hot water is included in the rental fee and the water heaters will be turned on prior to your arrival. If you find that there is no hot water, check that the water heater is on. In some properties there is a red light switch inside the bathroom, this is the hot water switch.

The parking areas are differentiated by colours:

BLUE: paid parking, with the word parking in red or blue, the former being more expensive.

GREEN: parking only for residents.

WHITE: free parking.

Never park where you see a VADO PERMANENTE (no parking at any time) sign as your vehicle will probably be towed away by the police and as well as a fine, you will have to pay to recover it.

Beaches and coves

Menorca's coastline is a series of cliffs of varying heights, interrupted by a large number of beaches of all kinds. Small, unspoilt, urbanised, with or without services. Many of them can be reached by car or public transport, while others can only be reached on foot. Some are ideal for children and others to enjoy alone, with friends or as a couple. Please help keep our beaches clean: respect the environment at all times and dispose of rubbish responsibly.

Urbanised beaches

Urbanised beaches have services and are perfect for children.

Es Grau

Located to the north of Mahón has the natural protection of a wide bay, the clear waters are shallow and practically always calm making it an excellent choice for children. It has kayaks rentals, paddle surf and pedal boats.

Punta Prima

Located in the extreme southeast of Menorca, in the municipality of Sant Lluís has all the necessary beach services for the whole family to enjoy.

Cala'n Porter

Located in Alaior is ideal if you have children, the water at the beach has very little swell and is also shallow. It has all the necessary services including sun loungers, parasols, pedal boats, lifeguard and a playground for the little ones on the beach.

Son Bou

Also in Alaior is home to the longest sandy beach, which also has shallow waters. It has several beach bars where you can eat or have a romantic dinner.

Santo Tomás

Located on the south coast, is very popular with everyone, families, couples and groups of friends. It has a lifeguard and restaurant on the beach. From here you can walk to several virgin beaches: Binigaus (10 min), Cala Escortxada (40 min), Cala Fustam (1h).

Arenal d'en Castell

Located in Es Mercadal, has a wide and sheltered beach of fine white sand. It has all the necessary services including lifeguard services, restaurant, deck chairs and pedal boats.

Cala Galdana

Located in the municipality of Ferreries has varied services: beach bars, bathing, sun loungers, activities and boat hire. From here you can walk (30 min) to the best known beach of Menorca: Cala Macarella and Macarelleta. Also to other virgin beaches such as Cala Mitjana or Cala Trebaluger.

Son Xoriguer

Located in the south of the island in the urbanisation of the same name has very easy access and is an ideal beach for those who enjoy water activities. There is a lifeguard, restaurants and services of all kinds at the beach.

Virgin beaches

Most of them do not have any services, so be sure to always take water and food for the day.

Cala Caballeria

A beautiful beach on the north coast, is characterized by its reddish sand and crystal clear waters. The approach on foot from the car park takes approximately 10 minutes.

Cala Pregonda

Located in the north, also has reddish golden sand and there are different islets that help protect it from the waves. It can only be accessed by boat or on foot from the Binimel·là car park, which means a 25 minute walk with no natural shade.

Cala Pilar

Also in the north, between Ferreries and Ciutadella can only be reached on foot, the walk takes about 30 minutes from the car park. Before going to this beach, check out the wind direction, if it is a north wind blowing, it could be very wavy.

Cala Mitjana and Mitjaneta

On the south coast are fabulous beaches with white sand and crystal clear water and are an easy 15 minute walk from the car park but there are no services of any kind. At the entrance there are tables and benches for a picnic in the shade of the trees.

Cala en Turqueta

On the south coast, it is hidden among pine trees and takes its name from its blue waters. Although it is an unspoilt beach it does have toilets nearby and a lifeguard. Access on foot from the car park takes approximately 15 minutes.

Cala Macarella y Macarelleta

In the municipality of Ciutadella, and together with Macarelleta has one of the best known and most beautiful coastlines on the island. On the road that leads to it, there are some panels that will inform you if there are parking spaces available, capacity in the car park is limited. From June to September you can only get there by the number 69 Ciutadella - Macarella bus or walking from Cala Galdana (30 min). There is a lifeguard and a cafeteria/bar.

Cala Algaiarens (La Vall)

Located on the north coast, has shallow waters and is very close to Ciutadella and Cala Morell. A 10-minute walk along a path through pine woods make it an ideal place to go with children.

Cala Escortxada

Also on the south coast, it is difficult to access and isolated from any urban centre. It is a beach quite exposed to the sea, so it is better to go when the north wind is blowing. There are 2 options to park if you go by car, the carpark of Cala Mitjana or the car park of Santo Tomás, from either the walk to the beach takes about 50 minutes. You can also take one of the boats from Cala Galdana.

Camí de Cavalls

The “Camí de Cavalls” has a rich history dating back to the 14th century when it played a vital role in military surveillance, keeping a watchful eye on pirates and invading marauders. Originally serving as a communication route between properties, it remained off-limits to hikers for many years. However, in 2010, it gained recognition and was officially incorporated into the prestigious European long distance hiking trails, known as the GR (Gran Recorrido), with the designation GR223.

Embarking on the Camí de Cavalls opens up a world of exploration, allowing you to traverse a remarkable 185 km of stunning landscapes, divided into 20 captivating stages. As you venture along this trail, you will encounter idyllic coves and pristine beaches. Fear not the trail is well-marked every 100 m with wooden stakes to ensure you stay on track.

Walking the Camí de Cavalls is an immersive experience, granting you an intimate encounter with the island’s breath-taking beauty and diverse terrain. However, it is essential to treat this trail with utmost care, as its ecological and cultural treasures are equally delicate.

To enhance your experience, we recommend a couple of enticing routes below but would remind you of the importance of choosing the appropriate difficulty level in order to fully enjoy the trail. But above all, remember to pack essential provisions such as food, water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially during the warmer months. Don’t forget to wear sturdy footwear, as the trail can be rugged at times. If you’re visiting during swimming season, consider bringing goggles and a snorkel to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking beaches you’ll encounter along the way.

Places of interest

Monte Toro

Monte Toro is the highest point on Menorca, and is a popular destination for both local residents and tourists, where you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the whole island. At the summit of Monte Toro you will find the bar-restaurant “Sa Posada del Toro” with an interesting gastronomic offer, open every day from the 1st of May to the 31st of October.

Punta Nati Lighthouse

For magical sunsets! Punta Nati in the northwest of the island is just a 6 kilometers drive from Ciutadella. It is the perfect place to enjoy marvellous sunsets. The lighthouse can be reached on foot or bike, note that in the summer it is not possible to go by car but a bus service is available during those months.

Cavallería Lighthouse

This is one of the most peculiar lighthouses in Menorca, located at the northernmost point of the island. They say that if you create a pile of stones facing the sea and make a wish to the lighthouse to return to Menorca, it will come true. This is NOT true, stone piles are detrimental to the environment and it is best to refrain from building one.

Port of Fornells

A small coastal village that has its very own natural harbor, which happens to be the second largest in Menorca. It offers many possibilities for fun on the water, there is a sailing school, windsurfing and kayaking, as well as some highly recommendable restaurants.

Favaritx Lighthouse

Reachable on foot, bike or during the summer by bus only, the lighthouse is at the north-eastern end of the island in s’Albufera des Grau, just over 17 km from Mahón. Close to the lighthouse you may find a pond that forms temporarily after a storm, this pond is of great ecological importance because it becomes the resting and feeding place for some migratory birds.

Mola Fortress

Particularly remarkable and absolutely fascinating is the Fortaleza de la Mola, a fortress that sits majestically on a peninsula in Mahón. Built between 1850 and 1875, it is an

important example of 19th century military architecture, well worth exploring.

Museum of Menorca

Located in the former convent of Sant Francesc, in Mahón. The museum’s mission is to exhibit, restore, conserve and research Menorca’s cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, from prehistoric times to the present day.

Port of Cales Fonts

This is the name of the port of Es Castell, where you can enjoy a wide variety of fish and tapa restaurants, as well as the craft markets that are set up every day in the afternoon/ evening.

Prehistoric monuments

The prehistoric stone structures, known as Talayots, constitute an incredible cultural heritage and give their name to “Talayotic Menorca”. In Menorca alone more than 1600 examples have been found nestled in the undulating landscape of the island, including navetas (funerary monuments), taulas and settlements, some up to 5m high.

Must visits include the Naveta des Tudons, Torre d’en Galmes, Torralba d’en Salord, Talatí de Dalt, Trepucó, Torretrencada and the necropolis of Cala Morell.

Typical Menorcan products

Gastronomy

Menorca was declared “European Region of Gastronomy 2022” in January 2020, by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). The IGCAT’s objective with this project is to promote local products and gastronomy, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Local businesses and farms have contributed enormously to the economy, offering tourists and locals alike a variety of gastronomic experiences with their local produce.

Xoriguer gin

Is now Menorca’s national drink, originally it was the British who gave the locals a taste for this spirit. In 1708, under the Treaty of Utrecht, the British occupied the island, entering through the port of Mahón bringing various British products, including gin. Menorcan gin has a different taste, as a result of the juniper berries and flavoured brandy used in its production. The British left in 1802 but Xoriguer Gin remains a favourite across the Balearics.

Avarcas

The history of the “Avarques” sandal dates back to the 1920s, when a farmer named Joseph entered the shoe industry and made the first Avarcas, placing great importance on comfort and durability. His aim was to create a shoe that farmers could wear both in the countryside and in the city. This traditional and typically Menorcan footwear has become popular with visitors to the island. They are practical, unisex sandals, with a comfortable design found in numerous colours and finishes, fitting all occasions.

Mahón cheese

This cheese, produced exclusively in Menorca, is a cultural heritage that has a protected designation of origin. It is made from cow’s milk curdled at a low temperature, salted by immersion and cured according to the island’s customs. Depending on the degree of maturity, it is available in soft, semi-cured, cured or aged cheeses. The cheese owes its particular flavour to the island’s specific soil and climatic conditions and is produced.

Local festivities

Menorca’s patron saint festivals are usually held during the summer months. The Sant Joan festivities in Ciutadella, which have been celebrated on the island since the 14th century, are the ones that kick off the season. While the festivities of Mare de Déu de Gràcia - in Mahón, bring the summer season and its celebrations to a close.

The main protagonists of these festivities are horses. The riders (or caixers), dressed in black and white, ride their horses through the streets of the town, gather as a group, attend a special Mass and then the traditional “jaleo” (dance) is held.

In the jaleo, the caixers enter the village square and pass through the crowd, demonstrating their skills and making the horses jump to the rhythm of special music played by local musicians.

Gin also plays a big part in the celebrations in Ciutadella and Ferreries! The “Pomada” is a delicious, cooling mix of Menorcan gin and crushed, frozen lemon ice (granizado de limón). Be sure to try one!

In all the towns, except in Ciutadella, you can see the giants (very large wooden dolls) making a “pasacarrers”, which dance and go through the streets until they reach the square where the jaleo takes place.

The ‘Lloc de Menorca’ allows children to interact with many of the animals that have been taken in thanks to projects with European rescue centres. The centre also has a wetland area with more than 20 species from all over the world, an aquarium and a dome with 18 female macaques.

Markets

The warm climate entices you to spend time wandering around the craft markets and enjoying the local produce. Gourmets can indulge in the popular food markets, where the most famous products are Mahón cheese, traditional Menorcan sweet dishes and home-grown saffron.

At the craft markets there is a wide variety of stalls offering wood and metal goods, bags, belts and other leather goods, handmade jewellery, pottery, soaps and the famous Menorcan Avarcas sandals.

You will find markets all over the place, Ciutadella, Es Castell, Fornells, Mahón, Ferreries or Sant Lluís. On summer nights the night markets in the port of Ciutadella on the Cuesta Marina or Cales Font are a special experience.

Departure information

We very much hope that you have thoroughly enjoyed your holidays in Menorca and would love to see you back again very soon! We wish you a good journey home but before you leave would like to take note of the following on or before your departure day:

• Please vacate the property no later than 10:00 a.m. on your departure day, if your flight is delayed, suitcases etc. can be left at our office in Mahón (during working days).

• Make sure all windows and doors are locked, place the key inside the key box, lock it, and reset the combination numbers to 0000.

• We hope that you found the property to be clean on arrival and, although we do not expect you to clean it, we would ask that you clean all the dishes and leave the property as tidy as possible.

• If we find the property extremely dirty and additional cleaning is required, the corresponding cost will be deducted from your security deposit.

• All rubbish should be deposited in the municipal rubbish bins, located near the property or in the nearest village.

• All sheets should be removed from the beds and left with the towels in each room.

• Menorca is the "Island of Wind", so please make sure all the shutters are closed properly.

• If there are any breakages during your stay, please let us know as soon as possible so that the items can be replaced. Many thanks.
