HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET LAST VALENTINE’S DAY we started a new tradition. Because we had just cleared out lots of clutter and settled back into our home after several months of renovations, the last thing we wanted to do was give our kids more stuff. Instead, we gave them a Yes Day—a day when parents can’t say “no”. There are some parameters of course: Yes Day starts at 8 a.m. and ends with bedtime at 10 p.m. They must drink at least 1 bottle of water and eat one “real food” (aka not candy) meal. The shared budget for the day was $100 and travel was limited to two hours from home. Nothing illegal, nothing unsafe and you cannot ask for another Yes Day.
Josh and I were equal parts nervous and excited to see what a day planned by 9and 4-year-old boys would lead to, but we all had a blast! Mays and Thatch wanted homemade chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast so they could knock out their required meal for the day. Then we grabbed donuts on the way to putt-putt golf, which was followed by go karts and an arcade. We stopped for candy and chips at the gas station before heading to the skate park for some indoor skateboarding, and then a matinee showing of the latest Spider-Man movie (with cotton candy and sodas of course). The last of the cash was used on the clearance aisle at Target and a fast food dinner. When we got home, the boys put on a Beastie Boys album and had a dance party (which helped burn off some of that extra sugar) before snuggling up on the couch to watch The Greatest Showman and finishing off their remaining candy and snacks. We all had an unforgettable day and as Josh and I relaxed into the “anything goes” mentality, the boys learned a lot about budgeting money, managing time and working together to make the most of their special day. The next morning I couldn’t help myself from sneaking a few extra veggies into their smoothies and I went back to being a stickler about screen time and hydration. But that’s what balance is all about—if we spend most of our days making healthy choices, a day of carefree living every once in a while should do no harm. As one of the largest magazines we’ve ever published, this issue, featuring our 2020 Healthy & Green Living Directory, is a true labor of love. The knowledge and resources provided by the health- and eco-conscious businesses featured on the following pages will surely guide you toward a more balanced life of wellness. And while I sacrificed some of my own healthy habits as I spent long days and late nights sitting in front of the computer ahead of our deadline, I’m certainly eager to return to my daily yoga practice and home-cooked meals. But first, my own form of Yes Day is on the agenda—a screenfree day of rest followed by a fun-filled family evening. When was the last time you abandoned your health conscience and cleared your calendar of obligations? Whether you feel like you’ve been living an extended Yes Day or you’re long overdue for some self-care, find peace in the moment. By simply reading Natural Awakenings , you are contributing to the health and well-being of our local community, and for that I am grateful. With peace and appreciation,

Hypnosis Certification Class Being Offered in Fairhope Certified hypnosis trainer and marriage and family therapist Kathleen Peters will teach a hypnosis course March 30 to April 4 at the Holiday Inn Express in Fairhope. This 40-hour course teaches students how to assist others and themselves in creating a better life. Topics include pain relief, weight loss, smoking cessation, selfhypnosis and age regression. Hypnotism is the art of working with the subconscious mind and Peters believes it Kathleen Peters is one of the most effective ways to find and resolve inner conflicts, depression and illness. Doctors, dentists, nurses and massage therapists use hypnotherapy as a therapeutic tool to enhance their profession, and many people work as full-time hypnotherapists. “If you want to help yourself or others then learning hypnotism is for you,” says Peters, who turned to hypnotherapy in her marriage and family therapy practice when talk therapy failed to get to the root cause of her patients’ issues. “I use hypnotherapy to uncover subconscious motivations and I am passionate about using this modality because of the miracles I have been fortunate to witness—smokers quitting permanently in one hour, phobias dissolved, even a hysterical blind man’s sight returned! It has had a profound impact on my life, as well as the hundreds of clients I have helped.” For more information, call 270-929-5363 or email Stepping.Stones@yahoo.com. See ad, page 16.

Support Center for New Parents Opening in Fairhope Gulf Coast Lactation (GCL) in Fairhope’s Warehouse District will open in March as a full-service nonprofit clinic for new parents to network and get the support they need for a healthy start to parenthood. “Being a parent is hard and we want to make it a little easier. Too many moms don’t get the help they need to breastfeed successfully, too often because there is no one to encourage, coach and teach the basic skills that create and maintain a good experience,” says founder Scotty Thomson, who has 25 years of experience in maternal-child nursing including labor and delivery, mom-baby couplet care and lactation consultation. GCL’s services will include one-on-one prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding consults, postpartum mood disorder screening, community support groups for moms and newborn classes designed specifically for dads. A certified lactation consultant will provide services and appointments for GCL families while working closely with other area clinicians who are supporting good birth and early childhood experiences. Thomson says, “We hope to create a safe space for families to gather and make lifelong connections with other members of the community while getting support for whatever issues they are facing.” Fundraising for this community resource is ongoing. To donate, visit TinyURL. com/GCLstartup. For more information, call 251-455-8928 or email GulfCoastLactation@gmail.com.

Free Healing Sessions Foster Well-Being Local energy healers are now hosting Healing Sanctuaries from 6 to 9 p.m. every fourth Wednesday of the month to share their love, light and healing with the community. These free energy healing sessions are offered in a sacred and safe space to revitalize, relieve stress and bring more inner peace. Attendees have noted benefits such as pain relief, a greater sense of wholeness and joy, and feelings of love and support. “We created this service recognizing that all of us need healing in some form and that, as a community, we are many but we are One. It is with this thought that we provide our healing touch to others, and in doing so heal ourselves as well,” says organizer Robert Maldonado. Upon arrival, community members enjoy the quiet, candlelit atmosphere of the waiting area which is separate from the healing spaces. Healers begin with a short guided meditation and individuals will be able to write a note to the healer describing what they would like to be healed. The experience should be restful, enjoyable and supportive for all. Location: Lotus Bluum, 6A Bancroft St., Fairhope, AL. For more information, call 251-210-6872 or email RRMaldo41@gmail.com.
Crocheted Bags Go From the Market to the Beach Rebecca Youngs of Lillian is a featured vendor of the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market in Foley. Her crocheted bags are a popular market item because they can be used as a beach bag, a market bag or as a purse. “I embellish each one with a big decorative button to make them unique and I use a wonderful cotton yarn that can be washed and dried. And because I double the yarn to give it strength, it doesn’t stretch. The bag holds its shape when you put things in it,” Youngs says. Youngs also knits and crochets scarves, beanies and towels, plus she makes microwaveable potato bakers and hot bowl holders. “You can put the whole dish in the fabric holder before you put it in the microwave. You don’t need trivets or pot holders to handle it—it can go straight from the microwave to the table,” she explains. Rebecca Youngs
The year-round market is open Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March, and 2 to 6 p.m., April through October. Location: 20733 Miflin Rd. (Co. Rd. 20), Foley, AL. Baldwin County Citizens Join National Climate Initiative Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Joining hundreds of active chapters, the Baldwin County chapter has formed to help create the political will for a livable world. Using a respectful, nonpartisan approach to climate education, CCL seeks to create a broad, sustainable foundation for climate action across all geographic regions and political inclinations. They build upon shared values rather than partisan divides and empower volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community. “We are working for the passage of Carbon Fee and Dividend, the climate change solution economists and climate scientists alike say is the ‘best first-step’ to preventing the worst impacts of a warming world,” says chapter organizer Riva Fralick. CCL believes this policy will drive down America’s carbon pollution while unleashing American technology innovation and ingenuity. Fralick says, “I am hopeful that now the climate crisis is on the political agenda, that rapid change to a clean, sustainable energy future is possible.” For more information, call 954457-0415, email Baldwin.AL@ CitizensClimateLobby.org or visit CitizensClimateLobby.org.

Try Mind-Body Options to Reduce Opioid-Treated Pain
Qigong, a traditional Chinese massage technique and movement practice, may offer hope for the one in 68 American children suffering from autism spectrum disorder. Researchers at Portugal’s Oporto University reviewed 10 high-quality studies, all of which involved massage for children as young as 2, including two which also employed slow qigong movements and breathwork for older children. Previous studies have found that the qigong type of gentle massage practiced for 15 minutes daily by parents on autistic children helps the children tolerate touch, feel reassured by it and bond more deeply with parents that also feel less stress. The meta-study affirmed, “Qigong seems to be able to decrease severity of individual sensory, behavioral and language components of autism, and improve self-control, sociability, sensory and cognitive awareness, as well as healthy physical behavior.”

People suffering from acute pain often turn to addictive opioid treatments, but research from the University of Utah School of Social Work published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine concluded that certain mindbody therapies significantly reduce pain and the use of opioids. Reviewing 60 randomized, controlled, published clinical trials with more than 6,400 participants, researchers found that meditation/mindfulness, therapeutic suggestion and cognitive behavioral therapy all significantly reduced pain severity along with opioid use and misuse. Hypnosis also helped lower pain. Mind-body therapies proved effective at reducing short-term, acute pain from medical procedures, as well as chronic pain. Lead author and Associate Dean for Research Eric Garland pointed out that 82,000 Americans are projected to die from opioid overdoses in the next five years and noted, “If all of us—doctors, nurses, social workers, policymakers, insurance companies and patients—use this evidence as we make decisions, we can help stem the tide of the opioid epidemic.” New Africa/Shutterstock.com

FRUSTRATION ENDED.
I had been to gym programs. I tried dieting. I even ordered videos. Nothing lasted. Now I am in a size 4 and this program is completely the reason why. My search stopped here. I saw the ad for hypnosis and called to make the appointment for the free screening. I figured, what have I got to lose? I knew it was the right place immediately when I got there. They showed me other people like me who had succeeded on the program. It was fun and I learned a lot. Motivation is possible. I understood how this would work for me.

The 40th General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held last November, adopted a resolution that reaffirms the importance of the Earth Charter (EarthCharter. org) as an ethical framework for sustainable development. The Charter’s four pillars— respect and care for the community of life; ecology integrity; social and economic justice; and democracy, non-violence and peace—have guided and underpinned UNESCO’s sustainable development work. Taking into account the current world situation and environmental crises, delegates felt it was time to act and that the Earth Charter provides the needed principles and values. Although it has no binding force, like previous UNESCO resolutions, its ethical foundation may surface in future battles in international courts.

Trees Exhibit ‘Heartbeat’
Scientists have discovered that some trees raise and lower their branches several times in the course of the night, indicating a cycle of water and sugar transportation, but they didn’t know why. Plants need water to photosynthesize glucose, the basic building block from which their more complex molecules are formed. For trees, this entails drawing water from the roots to the leaves. Dr. András Zlinszky, at Aarhus University, Denmark, used a laser scanning technique to measure the exact location of branches and leaves of 22 tree and shrub species, and published his observations of substantial unexpected movement cycles. He says, “We detected a previously unknown periodic movement of up to 0.4 inches in cycles of two to six hours. The movement has to be connected to variations in water pressure within the plants, and this effectively means that the tree is pumping. Water transport is not just a steady-state flow, as we previously assumed.” Some might call that pumping action a heartbeat. 14

UNESCO Adopts Resolution on Earth Charter
In 1969, there were only 100 South American fur seals and sea lions along the coastline of Lima, the capitol of Peru, but that has increased to more than 8,000 today, thanks to local fishermen that have realized over the intervening years that a balanced ecosystem benefits all. Once hunted almost to the point of no return for their pelts and because they ate so many fish, the sea mammals have slowly rebounded since Peru established its first marine protection area there in 1979, the Paracas Marine Reserve. Today, the Fishermen’s Union has defined these areas, in which each local fishing collective is dependent economically, and has assigned responsibility to that group for protecting those marine resources. Impetus for species protection is also being driven by the rise of tourism and artisanal fisheries. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which maintains a “Red List” database of species and the degree to which they are threatened with extinction, has also been involved. It also compiles a “Green List” to recognize global best practices for area-based conservation, a program working with marine reserves along the Pacific coast.

New Label Verifies Carbon Neutral Products
A new Climate Neutral product label is joining others like Fair Trade, 100% Organic and Made in America, and is closing in on a Kickstarter (Tinyurl.com/CarbonNeutralKickstarter) funding goal to raise $100,000. The idea for the label was hatched by the founders of San Franciscobased backpack and camera equipment maker Peak Design and Brooklyn-based Biolite, which sells sustainable energy products. Participating companies start by establishing baseline emissions, evaluating such factors as raw materials, the energy costs at their facilities, the amount that employees travel, and how and where their products are shipped. They work to reduce and balance them through greener strategies, switching to renewable power and investing in carbon offsets before they can display the label on their products. According to Climate Neutral, it only costs 12 cents to offset the carbon emissions required to produce a $120 running shoe. More than 40 brands have already signed up.

Fresh H20 Comes to Kenya Town
A drought-plagued Kenyan region is using a new, solar-powered, desalination plant from the international nonprofit GivePower to obtain clean water. Before the plant’s arrival in the town of Kiunga, villagers had completely run out of clean drinking water and had to use dirty well water and saltwater from the Indian Ocean. The new solar water farm produces enough drinking water that’s cleaner than typical desalination plants for more than 35,000 people every day. GivePower has a mission of using renewable energy as a means of bringing water, food and energy to places that need it most. They plan on building similar facilities in other drought-prone countries such as Colombia and Haiti.

Clean and Green Eco-Laundry Tips
By laundering clothes using simple ingredients and wise eco-practices, consumers can both save money and lower their carbon footprint. Natural cleaning ingredients cited by TheEcoGuide.org include white vinegar, baking soda, lemons, borax and castile soap, all of which “can be bought in bulk with minimal packaging and have known cleaning properties that make them safe, effective and carbon-friendly alternatives.” Coarse salt is also suggested due to its mold-fighting power. Look for biodegradable laundry detergents made with plant oils and other natural ingredients that are free of phosphates, bleach and surfactants such as petroleum-based nonylphenol ethoxylates. Consider coldwater washing. About 90 percent of the energy a washing machine uses goes toward heating water. By washing four out of five loads in cold water, a household could cut its carbon emissions by 864 pounds a year, according to Energy Star data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Because the cold setting may still heat the water to as much as 80° F, see if the washer has a preferable “tap cold” option. Also, the temperature recommendations on clothing labels represent “the highest spectrum clothes can handle,” Melissa Hockstad, president and chief executive of the American Cleaning Institute, recently told The New York Times, so the hottest water won’t necessarily clean clothes better. During rinsing, natural disinfectants that can be added include a few drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil; two teaspoons of tea tree oil; white vinegar (one-half cup per load); or one teaspoon of grapefruit seed extract. Always assemble a full load of laundry each time. Line drying outdoors or on a drying rack indoors also conserves energy and is gentler on fabrics. Further, learn how to make homemade, felted wool dryer balls at DIYNatural. com; tossing four to six of them in each dryer load saves time, energy and money plus reduces static cling. And consider running the dryer early in the morning or overnight: this shifts energy consumption to off-peak hours, which lowers the demand on power plants and could help reduce national reliance on fossil fuels.

THE RE-USE REVOLUTION Plastics Peril Drives New Strategies by Yvette C. Hammett
On average, for every liter of bottled water in total, you would be ingesting 325 pieces of plastic. We had one bottle of Nestlé Pure Life with over 10,000 pieces of plastic. ~Sherri Mason, Ph.D. DAILY NEWS FOOTAGE AND PHOTOS CAPTURE the damage plastic is doing to the planet’s oceans: turtles ensnared in plastic nets, whales with guts full of plastics and aerial views of the burgeoning island of floating detritus known as the Pacific Garbage Patch. Tiny pieces of plastic are even showing up in our food and drinking water. The growing plastics crisis has some people yearning for the days when soft drinks and beer all came in reusable containers that required a deposit, or when milk and cream were delivered to the front porch in quaint, glass bottles. Sherri Mason, Ph.D., sustainability coordinator at Penn State Behrend, in Erie, Pennsylvania, believes this is exactly the direction this issue may take. “I do think some of it will be a return to glass,” she says. Mason conducted a study in 2018 and discovered that bottled wa18

ter contained tiny bits of microplastic. An earlier tap water study she conducted showed there were about five particles of plastic in a liter of tap water, if averaged across the globe. “We thought that would shock people into demanding change. Instead, a lot of the comments were to drink more bottled water.” In the 2018 study, Mason and her team, then at the State University of New York at Fredonia, tested 259 bottles of water from nine countries that included all the top brands in the U.S.—Dasani, Aquafina and Nestlé Pure Life, among them. “On average, for every liter of bottled water in total, you would be ingesting 325 pieces of plastic. We had one bottle of Nestlé Pure Life with over 10,000 pieces of plastic. These are the particles that can make their way across the gastrointestinal tract and be carried to your blood, liver, kidneys and brain,” Mason says.
HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com
Analysis of the particles indicates that the plastics found in bottled water leach from the container itself, while the source in tap water may be PVC pipes and fittings. However, plastics are also ubiquitous in surface and groundwater, and may make their way into drinking supplies via air, wind, rain and industrial activity, according to an assessment published earlier this year in the journal Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health . After Mason’s findings were released, the World Health Organization announced a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water. Meantime, the impact of plastic pollution on marine life—zooplankton, seabirds, marine mammals and reptiles throughout the food chain—is well documented, according to a 2014 study published in the online journal PLOS ONE . The study estimates more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic, weighing somewhere near 269,000 tons, are floating in the Earth’s oceans. People are loudly calling for change, and innovators are responding. In the United Kingdom, there is the Plastics Pact, which brings together businesses from across the
plastic industry to eliminate problematic or single-use plastics through redesign, innovation and alternative delivery models. A UK startup, Ooho, has created an edible water container made of seaweed to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact. Tom Szaky, the CEO and founder of TerraCycle, a Trenton, New Jersey, recycling company, is among those pioneering a rebirth of reusing with a pilot project launched in May called Loop. The company has partnered with Proctor & Gamble, Nestlé, Clorox and other major brands to deliver and retrieve products in durable, reusable containers, just like the milk man. Consumers can order everyday items from the online Loop store—paying a deposit on the container—and UPS will deliver it to their doorstep, picking up empties to be
washed, refilled and used again and again. “ Hundreds of products, from Tide to Häagen-Dazs to Tropicana, are being delivered,” says Szaky. “It’s growing very fast in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.; and we’ve just expanded to Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Delaware—eventually nationwide.” T h e r e - u s e r evo l u ti o n is a l s o t a k i n g shape in 10 states and a U. S. territor y that have passed “bottle bills”: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Guam. Typically, the laws require a deposit of 5 to 15 cents be placed on all glass, plastic and metal containers.

SOMEDAY, MEDICAL SCIENCE will allow us to infuse damaged or aging organs with new cells, or to manufacture made-to-order organs on a 3-D printer. These emerging techniques to revitalize worn-out body parts are on the drawing board in the field of regenerative medicine. However, for the injured college athlete or the grandmother with compromised joint function, healing and pain relief can already be found in the form of prolotherapy and other non-invasive approaches that stimulate the body to heal itself. Injection therapies using dextrose or the patient’s own platelets or stem cells are being used to naturally stimulate the body to produce collagen and rejuvenated tissue, offering hope to those with soft tissue injuries, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and even pain syndromes like fibromyalgia. A recent review in the British Medical Bulletin of 10 high-quality studies of dextrose prolotherapy in adults with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee showed patients experienced significantly less pain and improved range of motion in both the short term and long term without adverse effects. Eighty-two percent of patients were satisfied with the treatment.
CONTROLLED INFLAMMATION
A type of regenerative medicine innovated by osteopathic physician Earl Gedney in the 1930s, prolotherapy induces low-grade, temporary inflammation with the intention of triggering connective tissue cells called fibroblasts in and around the injection site. “If you cut your arm or twist your ankle, various immune cells rush to the area to begin the repair

process. This is a very basic comparison of what prolotherapy does with injections directed to specific anatomical points,” says Ross A. Hauser, M.D., founder of Caring Medical Regenerative Medicine Clinics, in Fort Myers, Florida, and Chicago. “Prolotherapy is used to treat osteoarthritis because it helps correct the underlying reason why it has occurred, which is joint instability. The body overgrows bone as a long-term response in an effort to stabilize an unstable joint,” Hauser says. Naturopathic physician Brent Cameron, of Aurora Natural Medicine, in Gilbert, Arizona, suggests individualized treatment plans for best results. “My recommendations are very patient-specific, which is an important piece in prolotherapy.” Cameron says his patients are likely to start seeing relief in the first week. “In many instances, they experience complete relief and mobility after a series of treatments.” While Cameron attests to the efficacy of dextrose prolotherapy, he is cautious with recommending it for people with systemic inflammatory conditions. “Someone with a history of joint-related autoimmune response tends to mount stronger inflammatory responses. Other forms of regenerative medicine can be helpful for rheumatoid arthritis [RA], but not in the inflammation-mediated way, like prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.” One option, according to the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, in Boca Raton, Florida, might be very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELS), an emerging form of regenerative stem cell therapy. These have shown promise in dealing with RA and other autoimmune diseases. Meanwhile, the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine is ramping up its research into approaches that stimulate the body to repair itself, with numerous ongoing clinical trials utilizing different injection therapies for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
THE POWER OF PLATELETS
PRP injections are similar to prolotherapy, using platelets from the patient’s body instead of dextrose. “As blood flows through an injury site, the inflammatory chemicals trigger the platelets to release growth factors, which causes the torn fibers of the damaged structures to heal,” says Fort Worth osteopath Gerald Harris, of Texas Prolotherapy and Neural Therapy. PRP is sometimes used in conjunction with stem cell therapy, which is typically applied in cases in which something needs to be replaced, to help fill in gaps in ligaments or tendons, Harris says. PRP injections have proven to be effective in easing chronic low back pain from damaged vertebral discs. An overview of research published in the Journal of Spine Surgery in 2018 found it to be safe, effective and feasible, with promising potential for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Harris says that people that wish to avoid surgery or cortisone injections can benefit from PRP, which can also be applied topically to treat non-healing wounds like bedsores and diabetic ulcers. Harris subscribes to the power of persistence. “Don’t give up. With proper treatment there is a strong likelihood that you can live a happy, healthy life free from chronic pain.”

GREEN THERAPY Ecopsychology and the Nature Cure by Ronica A. O’Hara
There is a sense of safety that comes from being in the forest. Safety is necessary in order for the client to open up and share themselves with another human being.
Song_about_summer/AdobeStock.com
~Christian Dymond
FOR CLIENTS OF FAMILY THERAPIST Christian Dymond, the path to wellness begins on his 10 acres of woods and meadows in Milton, Vermont, walking alongside him, sitting by a babbling brook, watching squirrels gather nuts or the sun slowly set, breathing in the piney air. “There is a sense of safety that comes from being in the forest,” Dymond says. “Safety is necessary in order for the client to open up and share themselves with another human being.” Children, too, readily respond: “Getting a child outside into nature can bring life back into their eyes. Every day I see this happen.” The sweeping Santa Barbara beach is the office of clinical psychologist Maria Nazarian, Ph.D., as she accompanies clients on hour-long barefoot walks that might include a mindfulness exercise, goal-setting and meditation—all while watching waves foam, pelicans glide and sun-sparkles on the water. “When we feel connected to the world around us, we experience more joy and belonging, less depression and less anxiety, all of which increase our thinking, creativity, well-being and generosity,” she says.
candy1812/AdobeStock.com
Their practices, known as ecotherapy, green therapy or naturebased therapy, are an outgrowth of a ballooning branch of psychology known as ecopsychology, which investigates the critical links between nature experiences and human well-being. In examining such matters as our neurological responses to nature, how climate change and weather disasters lead to anxiety and depression, how nature deprivation affects children, and why nature can produce transcendent awe, the field is reshaping the way that therapists and doctors help both adults and children heal.
22
Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi Edition
Ecopsychology is a relatively new discipline. Little more than two decades ago, historian Theodore Roszak pointed out in Psychology Today that in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association , one of the most-diagnosed categories involved sex: “In mapping sexual dysfunction, therapists have been absolutely inspired… [but] the volume contains only one
HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com
listing remotely connected to nature: seasonal affective disorder.” Now, as the planet’s dire plight becomes a source of mounting concern, that professional neglect is rapidly changing. The field of ecopsychology has produced more than 100 authoritative studies linking nature to not only physical, but mental health. Researchers have found that spending time in nature settings helps lower stress, anxiety and depression, boosts positive mood, improves resilience and immune response, increases life expectancy, decreases anger, reduces blood pressure, eases computer fatigue and enhances energy, concentration and cognitive functioning. Recently, Danish researchers found that children raised in the least-green neighborhoods were 55 percent more likely to develop a serious mental illness than children that grew up in the greenest neighborhoods, regardless of social standing, affluence or parental mental illness. A British study of nearly 20,000 people published in Scientific Reports concluded that spending at least two hours a week in nature, whether in brief breaks or long stretches, is an optimal amount of time to feel a sense of better health and well-being. Putting these findings in motion, doctors, therapists, naturopaths, nurse practitioners and other health providers are increasingly suggesting and prescribing time in nature, especially for children. As of July 2018, there were 71 providerbased nature -prescription programs in 32 states , potentially involving hundreds of thousands of patients, according to a survey by the Institute at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
Ecopsychology research programs are opening at medical centers and universities, and ecotherapy classes are being added to academic degree programs for therapists. Major health insurers are financing pilot programs to measure time-in-nature outcomes, and electronic health records are starting to include nature prescriptions, as well as pharmaceuticals. Happily, it’s a therapy that can be self-prescribed. After Laura Durenberger, who blogs at ReduceReuseRenewBlog.com , gave birth to her son, she found symptoms of her generalized anxiety disorder at an all-time high, and ultimately linked it to rarely leaving her house. When she goes too long without being outside, she says, “My anxiety spikes. I am irritable. My energy is low. I don’t feel motivated or creative.” Now, even during the fierce Minneapolis winters, she is dedicated to spending half an hour a day in nature: “After my time outdoors, I feel grounded, renewed, energized and much more clearheaded than before I started.” As ecotherapist Dymond puts it: “Nature is always there for people to heal themselves in.”

SILENCE IS GOLDEN Quiet Gulf Coast Destinations Foster Peace in a Noisy World by Tammy Leytham THE WORLD IS A LOUD PLACE. It’s crowded with people, possessions, activity and lots of noise. Whether it’s ringing cell phones, car traffic or the background drone of a TV, excessive sounds can lead to high blood pressure, fatal heart attacks, hearing loss, insomnia, anxiety and depression, according to The World Health Organization. But, there’s good news: quiet places provide repose from stress incurred from a constant barrage of noise. Studies show silence can relieve stress, promote sleep, lower blood pressure, improve memory and boost the body’s immune system. Fortunately, there are plenty of places for respite along the Gulf Coast. 24

Take a walk along some of the 20 miles of trails at Historic Blakeley State Park to hear nothing but birds and leaves rustling in the breeze. Located on Highway 31 near Spanish Fort, it’s just minutes from Mobile and Daphne, but it seems a world away. The Hallet and Old Apalachee Trails immerse hikers in what Ralph Waldo Emerson would call “good silence” and the E.O. Wilson Boardwalk offers a beautiful view of the tranquil Tensaw River, where the silence is broken only briefly by a lone motor boat. The 10-acre forested area at The Pascagoula River Audubon Center on Rhodes Bayou in Moss Point, Mississippi connects to the Nature Conservancy’s 70,000 acres of protected riverfront land that keeps the Pascagoula, the largest free-flowing river in the contiguous U.S., one of the wildest.
More Serene Settings
Outdoor writer Joe Cuhaj recommends the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores for several quiet trails including the ADA-accessible Jeff Friend Trail. “The four trails there are just magnificent any time of year with the wildflowers, wetlands and probably the most secluded beach on the Alabama Gulf Coast.”

MEMORY LOSS or DEMENTIA?
Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island can be busy in summer, but otherwise three miles of easy trails offer a peaceful setting. Meander through pine, live oak, magnolia and scrub pine forests, past a glistening lake to the Gulf. Cuhaj takes advantages of the benches along the way to “soak in the tranquility”. For a spectacular botanical environment, visit The Nature Conservancy’s Ruth McClellan Abronski Splinter Hill Bog in North Baldwin County where carnivorous pitcher plants can be seen right at the trailhead and in bloom April through mid-summer. Weekdays provide the quietest experience on the 3.1 mile long trail.

While sitting on the porch, in the gardens or on the observation decks, many birds can be heard (almost 400 species have been sighted) and not much else. Because of its proximity to downtown, sometimes noises quietly carry to the property, but according to outreach and facilities associate Andrea Belcher, “The Audubon Center is still a relaxing place for people to explore, enjoy the bayou view, walk the trails.” She suggests kayaking the bayou, “Now, that is a quiet experience.” Stedman’s Landing, in Montrose, Alabama, is just off the Eastern Shore Trail, making it a convenient destination for bicyclists and walkers. A gorgeous and serene view of Mobile Bay is wheelchair accessible via a creekside boardwalk that leads to a deck over the beach. Walk south where the only sounds are waves lapping on the shore, wind blowing through wildflowers and fish splashing in the water. If your search for silence is spiritual—and you’re female—the Visitation Monastery in Mobile is a welcome retreat. On the grounds are a chapel, gift shop, small library and the retreat house, with a balcony that overlooks a peaceful courtyard. The unstructured environment allows plenty of time for meditation and contemplation and women can stay up to a week. Guests can attend prayers and take their meals with the two dozen nuns who live there as part of a cloistered order that dates back 400 years. There’s no fee for guests (though offerings are accepted) and no Wi-Fi or internet. “This is not sophisticated or high-tech. There’s a simplicity of life as we live it,” says Mother Margaret Mary. “Some come for spiritual and physical rest for the body, as well as for the mind and soul. You can get away from cell phones and noise... come to a quiet environment to renew one’s self as one needs to—with God’s grace and help.”

VITAL STEPS
The Path to Vascular Fitness by Marlaina Donato
For blood vessel flexibility, any sort of sustained aerobic exercise helps. Find something you enjoy so that you’ll keep doing it in the long term. ~Alex Hutchinson
IT IS WELL-KNOWN THAT EXERCISE combats cardiovascular disease by balancing blood pressure and managing blood sugar, but aerobic exercise, not resistance training, takes the prize for keeping the body’s thousands of miles of blood vessels more supple. A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise shows that all-extremity exercise like brisk walking improves arterial flexibility in older individuals; even those with a sedentary history.

A Wes t Virginia Univer sit y s tu d y p res ente d at th e 2016 E xperimental Biology meeting in San Diego showed that aerobic exercise fosters healthy blood vessels in rats exposed to chronic stress. Combining aerobic exercise with good diet and paying attention to triglyceride levels all help to keep us young from the inside-out.
HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com
According to a 2015 study by the University of Missouri School of Medicine published in Experimental Physiology, walking just 10 minutes after prolonged sitting can restore blood flow in the legs and improve impaired vascular function. Results like these are another reason to get up and move. Walking, running, swimming, cycling, jumping rope and playing tennis are all excellent options. “For blood vessel flexibility, any sort of sustained aerobic exercise helps. Find something you enjoy so that you’ll keep doing it in the long term,” says Alex Hutchinson, New York Times bestselling author of Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights? Fitness Myths, Training Truths, and Other Surprising Discoveries from the Science of Exercise . The Torontobased, Outside magazine science columnist underscores that treadmills and walking outside foster equal benefits by increasing the heart rate.
chelsdo /canva.com
The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic exercise. Dr. Regina Druz, a boardcertified cardiologist and medical director of the Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, explains, “This translates into 30 minutes a day, five times a week. A specific exercise program may be helpful for those with a medical condition, but for overall vascular health, any physical activity like walking or taking the stair s will do.” Dr uz also highlights the role of nitric oxide: “One of the most studied mediators of vascular health is [nitric oxide], which makes arteries flexible.” Research findings published in 2018 in the journal Hypertension spotlight the correlatio n b et we e n th e number of daily steps and arterial plasticity through a technique called pulse wave ve-
locity, which measures how fast blood travels from the heart to the feet. The evidence suggests that 1,000 extra steps a day foster significant vascular improvement. Judy Heller, a walking coach and founder of Wonders of Walking, a fitness program in Por tland, Oregon, concurs: “Moving throughout the day, not just once a day, is most important.” Heller is a firm believer in consistency. “My aunt lived to 107 and remained in her three-story house. Her words to me were, ‘Judy, don’t ever stop walking.’ Small changes yield greater rewards over time. We’re meant to move.”
SUPERFOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Nitric oxide, responsible for the dilation and contraction of blood vessels, is produced by exercising and helps to protect the smooth interior lining of the arteries from excessive plaque accumulation. Adding nitric oxideboosting foods to an already healthy diet can give us an extra edge over vascular conditions like stroke and peripheral artery disease. “Beets, arugula, spinach and rhubarb are all good sources of dietary nitrate. They’re not miracle supplements, but if you make these foods a regular part of your diet, you’ll have a positive effect on your arteries,” says Hutchinson. Research by Florida State University published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reveals that a one-cup daily serving of blueberries helps to protect the arteries from stiffness. Watermelon, rich in the nonessential amino acid L-citrulline, also packs a nitric oxide punch. Full-spectrum vitamin E is another good option, especially for addressing peripheral artery disease and reducing serum triglyceride levels that are often seen as secondary to “bad” cholesterol levels, but which low levels are vital to cardiovascular health. Druz cautions against using supplements as substitutes for healthy nutrition and exercise, and underscores the importance of dialing down stress, “I advise my patients to build stress resiliency, which involves recognizing and practicing stress response. This, along with nutrition and consistent exercise, will lower inflammation and help build stress resiliency.”

VET CHECK
THE HOLISTIC DIFFERENCE
~Danielle Becton, DVM
Holistic veterinarians have been treating dogs, cats, chickens, livestock and exotic animals across the nation for some time, but many people aren’t entirely clear about how their approach—and their training—differs from a conventional vet. Both enter the profession after earning a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree. Holistic practitioners can then choose to train in a variety of modalities, including acupuncture, herbs and physical rehabilitation, plus trigger point, megavitamin and stem cell therapies.
ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, Kim Krouth’s dog, Buckeye, was suffering from severe allergy symptoms. The mixed-breed shepherd was licking and biting her paws until her toe pads were bleeding. “Our conventional vet prescribed steroids,” recalls Krouth. “It helped some, but also agitated Buckeye. When I found out that other side effects could include serious health problems, I didn’t want to put her at risk.”
“Any method that is sufficiently different from conventional medicine requires extra training ... over a period of weeks, months or years,” says Nancy Scanlan, DVM, the executive director of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation, in Mount Shasta, California.
Treating the Whole Pet by Julie Peterson
Integrative medicine is about broadening our medical options, blending both conventional medical and holistic approaches. It focuses on client education and participation in the healing process of their pet.
The Madison, Wisconsin, animal lover headed to a holistic pet supply store to ask about alternative treatments for the dog’s allergies. She learned about herbal remedies, and was advised to take Buckeye to a holistic veterinarian. “Treating her holistically seemed like a better option than the side effects of treatment with drugs,” she says. The holistic veterinarian recommended acupuncture. It helped, but the dog later became sensitive to the needles. At that point, she was given homeopathic plant-based treatments that worked well with no side effects. Buckeye, now 15, has also received laser light therapy and spinal manipulation to help with mobility in her senior years. 28

Veterinarians, holistic or not, typically do the same initial examination of an animal, she says. From there, a holistic vet may look at additional areas or assess things in a slightly different way. “For example, someone trained in veterinary osteopathy or veterinary chiropractic would explore the range of motion of joints or the spine.”
In treatment, holistic DVMs use an integrative approach. The goal is to look at the animal as a whole and treat the underlying condition, rather than treating the symptoms. “Integrative medicine is about broadening our medical options, blending both conventional medical and holistic approaches. It focuses on client education and participation in the healing process of their pet,” says Danielle Becton, DVM, of Aloha Pet & Bird Hospital, in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. Holistic veterinarians may also choose to use fewer conventional drugs and limited vaccinations. “Vaccine titers can be used to determine if a patient has adequate antibodies to a disease to create immunity,” says Becton. “If a pet is already immune, they may not need another vaccine booster that year.” Becton and Scanlan agree that alternative treatments such as acupuncture, laser therapy or massage can be used in lieu of drugs for pain management. However, Scanlan does note that in an acute or emergency situation, many natural methods do not work fast enough, “and that is when holistic veterinarians are more likely to use drugs.”

CHOOSING A HOLISTIC VETERINARIAN
Pet owners seek out holistic veterinarians for different reasons. In Krouth’s case, it was the unacceptable side effects to drugs that led her to explore other options. Becton points out that she gets clients looking for a more natural approach for their pets after they personally have had success with human integrative medicine. However, it’s important that pets are treated by professionals that are trained to treat animals. People with holistic training for humans may not understand animal anatomy or physiology. Ultimately, choosing a veterinarian is a personal decision, and seeing a beloved pet thrive is the best confirmation that it was the right one. “We are so glad that we still have Buckeye at this golden age, and believe it’s due to holistic care that she has lived a comfortable, long life,” says Krouth.

WHAT’S REALLY IN THE BOTTLE? The Importance of CBD Lab Reports and How to Read Them by Meredith Montgomery
It’s a guarantee that you not only get what you pay for, but that nothing detrimental to your health is in a product. ~Jeff Sheldon ACCORDING TO A 2019 SURVEY BY CONSUMER REPORTS, more than a quarter of the U.S. population has tried CBD and one out of seven of those people say they use it daily. The CBD industry is often described as the Wild Wild West because despite CBD’s ubiquity, very little product regulation is in place. A 2017 study published in JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association examined label accuracy of 84 CBD products sold online and found that nearly 70 percent had either higher or lower concentrations of ingredients than indicated on the label, and the THC content of some products could produce intoxication or impairment. Until consistent manufacturing and testing standards are established, it is up to the consumer to do their due diligence. The best way to confirm label accuracy is to ask for a certificate of analysis (COA). This document reveals what’s really in the product and it should come from an accredited third-party laboratory.
CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS
“It’s a guarantee that you not only get what you pay for, but that nothing detrimental to your health is in a product,” says Jeff Sheldon, owner of The Health Hut in Mobile and Daphne. “A COA proves to you that the amount of phytocannabinoid matches what is claimed by the manufacturer and can also let a consumer know if there are pesticide residues, chemical solvents, toxins, heavy metals or pathogens in a product.” 30
Gulf Coast AL/MS Edition
HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com
COAs can be found on a manufacturer’s website and often in the retail store where the product is being sold. First, look at the company performing the test and ensure that it is different from the manufacturer. “These lab tests are a vital part of transparency between both the source and retailer, as well as between the retailer and the customer. Third-party tests are high priority because they eliminate bias and tampering,” says Jennifer Boozer, owner of CannaBama in Mobile.
POTENCY AND DATE
The most basic lab test examines potency of the product’s CBD and other major cannabinoids. Sheldon says, “Check that the amount of CBD and THC matches what the product claims and ensure that the THC content is below 0.3 percent, otherwise the product is illegal. If the manufacturer claims zero THC, you will see ‘ND’ for not detected.” Ed Morgan, owner of Stella Naturals in Gulf Shores, recommends looking at the date the test was done. “CBD only has a shelf life of just over a year and much less after opened. Many times you will see a test that is over a year old or 10 months old. You do not want to buy an old product that is expired or close to it.”
Plant Medicine Section sponsored by CannaBama.
TOXINS
In addition to a standard cannabinoid profile, ideally a product’s COA also includes the lengthy results of a full panel lab test, which reports on the presence of toxins. Boozer says, “Because cannabis is a bioremediator, a fully mature plant will have drawn into itself whatever toxins, heavy metals and chemical fertilizers or pesticides may be present in the soil. This can be dangerous because they are usually harmful to the body if ingested or inhaled. If the plant is not properly sealed and stored, mold, mildew and other bacteria can begin to grow, which can also make consumers sick, especially when inhaled.”
All natural. All Hemp.
TERPENES
CBD products are sometimes tested for their terpene content as well. “Many manufacturers do not have this test done, but terpenes are shown to create different feelings and moods or benefits,” says Morgan, noting that some popular terpenes are Myrcene, Linalool, Limonene, Pinene and Terpineol. Boozer refers to these aromatic oils as the “smell” chemicals and says, “They are very important when deciding what type of experience will result, and they can be used to customize the product effectiveness when they are added after the initial extraction. Each terpene has different medicinal properties in the body.”
COA REQUIREMENTS
In most states, COAs are only available for products whose manufacturer chooses to submit a sample and pay for a legitimate lab to perform the analysis. If a company does not publicly post this information, there is no way for consumers to know what they are buying. Florida just joined the small group of states that does have CBD labeling requirements. As of January, Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is regulating CBD-based products consumed by people and pets. New rules address how packages are labeled (among other things) and require COAs by certified third-party laboratories. Morgan, whose products are manufactured in one of Florida’s state licensed and inspected CBD facilities, says “This helps protect the consumer from fraud or bad CBD products, and we hope to see this in many states soon.”

Get Nutritional and Antifungal Benefits from Celery
Use Pumpkin Seed Oil to Dodge Hypertension
baibaz/Shutterstock.com
Postmenopausal women are more likely to develop hypertension than men their age, but taking pumpkin seed oil daily may head off that condition, report researchers from Marymount University, in Arlington, Virginia. In a blind study of 23 participants, women taking three grams of pumpkin seed oil for six weeks had significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, as well as better blood flow in their arteries. The oil “might be effective in the prevention and treatment of hypertension in this population,” write the authors.
Researchers from Cameroon’s University of Buea studied the properties of nine local vegetables and found that celery, Apium graveolens, had some of the highest levels of antifungal properties, as well as high levels of nutritional lipids, protein, vitamin C, copper, zinc and phosphorous. Also scoring high in nutritional and antifungal value were the seeds of Irvingia gabonensis, African or bush mango, sometimes used in the U.S. in weight-loss products.

Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market
CONNECTING LOCAL CONSUMERS TO THEIR LOCAL FOODS The Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market (CAFFM) in Foley is Baldwin County’s largest farmers’ market. Open Tuesdays and Saturdays year round, the comfortable, covered facility provides local fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, horticultural and agricultural products, baked goods and art to the general public and commercial establishments. “Our mission is to promote healthy foods from the bounty of the Gulf Coast and make them readily available to our neighbors from all over the area,” says Marketing Manager Prisila Hughes. “We want the locals to come shop from our local farmers and fishermen.” As a certified farmers’ market, only local products are available—vendors must be the original producer of all items being sold and all seafood has been caught in the Gulf. This promotes sustainability, supports the local economy and ensures tastier food. When produce isn’t bred for shipping quality and shelf life, it’s bred for flavor, handled minimally and often harvested within 24 hours. Visit CoastalAlabamaMarket.com to learn about featured farmers, get recipe ideas and stay up-to-date on the seasonal hours of operation.

Nature Connect
OUTDOOR SCHOOL CULTIVATES WONDER AND A LOVE FOR LEARNING Nature Connect is an outdoor school in Baldwin County that offers preschool, homeschool, after school, family programs and camps for children of all ages. Soon they will begin enrolling for a new kindergarten program. Their vision is to support children to develop an appreciation for each other and the natural world, so that they grow into dedicated leaders and environmental stewards in their communities. With lots of educational fun and play, students explore outdoors and learn about animal tracking, bird calls, local plants and animals, gardening, primitive skills and crafts. The programs also include storytelling, song and art in nature. Studies show that time spent in nature increases attention span, self-esteem, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Children who spend more time outdoors and who participate in cooperative group activities also tend to have healthier relationships with friends and family. “Our programs are not only about being outdoors, but also about nurturing the children to be healthy, vibrant and connected individuals,” says Founder Brinkley Hutchings. “If you want your child to come home happily exhausted from a day full of learning and outdoor adventure, our programs are for you.”

CannaBama: The CBD Store
A TRAILBLAZER FOR THE LOCAL HEMP INDUSTRY AND BEYOND CannaBama: The CBD Store, a woman-owned business established in August 2018, was the first store of its kind in the state of Alabama and is now the largest CBD retailer in the region. By offering educational classes and events and hosting the weekly radio show Sweet Home CannaBama on FM Talk 106.5, owner Jennifer Boozer has been on a mission to teach her customers and the public at large about CBD products and their benefits. “The general lack of knowledge and the overall low quality of life many people face are what drives my efforts,” Boozer says. CannaBama currently has two Mobile locations and an extensive online store. The business is also very active in the community, raising funds for local charitable organizations every month. “Our entire goal is to help our community take back their health and learn how to utilize natural paths to healing. Open Table UCC
PROGRESSIVE BIBLICAL SCHOLARSHIP INSPIRES INCLUSIVITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP As the first United Church of Christ congregation on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Open Table represents an emerging Christianity that seeks a more expansive view of God, has strong ecological and social justice commitments, insists on a Christianity with intellectual integrity, and believes that Christianity can be vital without claiming to be the best or the only true religion. The congregation actively supports Prism United—a local nonprofit organization that serves LGBTQ youth. In addition to the preteen, teen and family support groups offered in Mobile, Prism United now hosts a teen support group in Fairhope and is sponsoring the area’s first LGBTQ prom for high schoolers in Mobile and Baldwin counties this April. Inspired by Rev. Jim Antal’s book Climate Church, Climate World, Open Table and All Saints Episcopal have created Gulf Coast Creation Care. This faith-based climate action alliance of congregations will seek to focus the Gulf Coast community’s moral attention on the climate crisis and to mobilize all people toward bold and just action. A tree planting initiative led by Springhill Avenue Temple is first on their agenda, while a Climate Action workshop featuring keynote speaker Rev. Antal is being planned for November.

Dynamic Therapeutics & Sports Performance RESTORING A PAIN-FREE QUALITY OF LIFE, NATURALLY
Dynamic Therapeutics, in Daphne, specializes in medical massage therapy and corrective exercise programming. “Our goal is to help people who are dealing with pain regain the quality of life they had before their injury,” says owner and Community Support Specialist Dr. Tonya Butler, Ed.D, who is a licensed massage therapist, certified adaptive recreation and sports specialist and NSCA-certified personal trainer. “We help the body heal itself and aid in the correction of chronic movement issues related to injuries or habits.” Medical massage differs from a full-body relaxation massage in that it focuses on soft tissue injuries and specific problems. As a certified adaptive recreation and sports specialist and certified personal trainer, Butler also offers sports massage, fascia release and techniques such as trigger point therapy, musculoskeletal interventions and biomechanical retraining. To create an individualized therapy plan, all new patients receive a comprehensive assessment that first examines medical history and analyzes movement patterns and daily activities. Palpation and manual therapy then allow the therapist to feel areas in the tissue that may be the cause of pain. As an Adaptive Sports Specialist and U.S. Army veteran, Butler is especially passionate about improving the lives of wounded warriors who have suffered traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. All veterans receive their first massage for free. Butler says, “With the highest level of education and understanding of the human body, we are able to help clients that have been everywhere with no success in finding solutions for their pain.”

Jubilee Suites
A PEACEFUL RETREAT ON MOBILE BAY Although it’s only a mile from downtown Fairhope, the peaceful and private bay front setting of Jubilee Suites boutique hotel feels like a world of its own. From the canopy of old oak trees and a New Orleans style courtyard to the nightly sunsets from the bluff or the beach, Jubilee Suites provides a relaxing escape any time of year. Originally built in 1940, Jim and Dana Maloney completely renovated the property in recent years so that it now features seven one- and two-bedroom luxury suites—each with its own full kitchen, washer/dryer, bathroom and private bay view balcony or patio. Two large event spaces and a brand new catering kitchen make this an ideal destination for a wedding weekend, corporate retreat, family reunion or wellness retreat. “You’ll find plenty of private spaces to meditate, journal, catch up on your reading or to simply enjoy the scenery,” says Dana, who enjoys providing her guests with custom experiences such as spa services, yoga classes, inspiring speakers and catered meals. The third floor yoga studio room features a breathtaking view of the bay, while 200 feet of shoreline at the base of the backyard bluff gives guests the opportunity to swim, fish and paddle board during their stay. “Jim and I love to share the tranquility and peacefulness of Jubilee Suites with our guests,” Dana reflects. “It is gratifying to see them make themselves at home here, spread out all over the property and take some time out of their busy lives to simply relax.”

By the Bay Pharmacy + Wellness
INDEPENDENT PHARMACY FOCUSES ON NATURAL OPTIONS
By the Bay Pharmacy + Wellness, in Daphne, offers traditional pharmacy services while embracing alternative solutions that are frequently overlooked or dismissed by traditional pharmacy settings. Owned by two local, female pharmacists, Dr. Sarah Siefert and Dr. Christina Bond, this independent pharmacy provides a quiet, wellness-focused environment. “We look forward to helping others achieve optimal wellness, whether that includes traditional pharmaceuticals out of necessity or utilizing non-traditional or alternative options entirely,” says Bond. For example, both pharmacists have extensive experience in pain management and can work with patients and their doctors to seamlessly manage monthly prescriptions and/or alternative treatments to lessen the need for pain medications. “We want to meet patients where they are and improve how they feel in the most sensible way for that patient,” she says. Prescriptions are often filled while you wait and most major insurance plans are accepted. Customers can enjoy coffee and a children’s play area in the waiting area, and shop for health products such as high quality supplements, pure CBD oil, locally-made elderberry syrup and healthy energy drinks. “We want to help our neighbors—we care about your health and well-being, respect your time and appreciate your business,” Bond says. “You do have a choice—shop local!”

The Brewer’s Alley
MAGICAL CRYSTAL SHOP IS DAPHNE’S HIDDEN GEM Located in the heart of Olde Towne Daphne, The Brewer’s Alley is a quaint crystal shop with a warm and mystical ambiance. Open Wednesday through Sunday, owners Meghan and Patrick Brewer stock their store with a rainbow assortment of gems from all over the world. In addition to 40 types of tumbled stones, their inventory includes high-end specimens for the collector, such as Spanish and Elmwood Fluorites, and Colombian laser quartz. They also have authentic Indian tapestries, medicine bags, pendulums, crystal water bottles, a variety of cabochons for jewelry making and crystal lamps (amethyst, rose quartz and Selenite) of different shapes and sizes. “Being a part of this business is such a fruitful experience,” Meghan says. “Everyone we meet is unique and beautiful with a story to tell—much like the crystals we sell. There is always more to learn, and there is always room to grow.”

enrG-IV
PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL STAFF PROVIDES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE AND IV VITAMINS At enrG-IV in Orange Beach, many people walk in with fatigue and brain fog and feel better before they leave the office. Owner Janet Baker, RN says, “IV works because vitamins, minerals and nutrients administered directly into the bloodstream bypass the digestive system and are absorbed completely. You only absorb 20 percent of anything you take in orally, but you absorb 100 percent of what you get by IV. Their IV lounge features a relaxing spa-like environment and because enrG-IV cocktails do not have any preservatives, they are easy to tolerate—even for those with allergies who are often turned away by other clinics. A registered nurse since 1995, Baker commonly works with clients who have Lyme disease, autoimmune disorders and hypothyroidism, as well as healthy individuals looking to increase immune function, enhance athletic performance or reduce fine lines and wrinkles. For the functional medicine side of the clinic, enrG-IV staff spend time with each client to get to know their history. They seek out the root cause of symptoms and offer natural treatment methods to eliminate the core problem and stop symptoms completely. From the health challenges that accompany chronic disease to a headache after a late night out, enrG-IV can help, naturally.

Integrative Healthcare of Lower Alabama
ACHIEVING VIBRANT, WHOLE-BODY HEALTH
Last Fall, Functional Medicine Practitioner Tara McLellan opened Integrative Healthcare of Lower Alabama to help patients uncover the root cause of illness. Integrative medicine blends traditional western medicine with science-based and evidence-based functional medicine to discover and treat the underlying causes of disease and chronic illness. She believes this model can foster true wellness, which involves not only the body, but also the mind and soul. “Medications are often just a Band-Aid. Most of the time we can address lifestyle, genetic and environmental factors and help a person heal from within,” says McLellan, who is originally from Mobile. She has been a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner for more than 10 years and is also an instructor for the Master of Science in Nursing program at the University of South Alabama. Prior to starting her own practice, she practiced in two of the largest community health centers on the Gulf Coast. McLellan typically takes two hours for a new patient’s initial appointment at her Daphne office, while follow-ups last one hour. She offers a wide range of therapies to suit each individual’s needs and goals. “Our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal themselves and we strive to help you live your best life possible.”
