HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET
I
’ve always been one to wear a lot of hats and juggle multiple jobs. I have a hard time saying no to things I’m passionate about and I get antsy when life starts to feel stagnant. But as our boys turned 5 and 10 over the last six months I’ve found myself reflecting deeply on what I consider my most important role—being Mom to Mays and Thatch. This year’s birthdays seemed monumental as Josh and I celebrated a decade of parenthood and looked back with disbelief that Mays was Thatch’s age when Thatch was born. It feels like we’ve hit so many milestones, yet their lives have only just begun. When I was working on this month’s feature story about raising kids in the 21st century, it was hard to know where to begin. The world is so vastly different today than it was when I was growing up so my instinct was to line up a long list of interviews with experts on digital citizenship and progressive education. As my research piled up, I confirmed that technology is indeed giving children access to opportunities at a very fast pace and there are new skills that need to be taught as a result. Yet in this age of innovation, what is more important than ever is that kids have access to seemingly antiquated experiences such as playing freely and taking risks. Teaching timeless virtues like kindness and fostering a sense of purpose in the world are proving to be more valuable than maintaining a high GPA. Of course this is all easier said than done—teaching children how to be empathetic is no easier than trying to tackle an AP calculus assignment! Raising the next generation truly takes a village. Parents and teachers may have the greatest influence on today’s youth, but kids are learning how to be citizens of the world from all of us. To invest in a bright future we can all demonstrate compassion in our daily actions while taking time to listen and thoughtfully respond to young people’s unfiltered and honest opinions. The individuals that they grow up to be will be a reflection of who we are today. This morning was Thatch’s first day of kindergarten. He has been looking forward to this day for months, and in recent weeks he’s kept a countdown calendar by his bed. Several moms invited me to a “boo hoo brunch” after drop-off and I jokingly replied, “For the record, I won’t be crying, I’ll be celebrating because the house will be quiet again!” In reality, I didn’t cry, and I was excited. As he walked confidently into the elementary school, it was evident that he is ready for what lies ahead, and so am I. Cheers!
P.S. It’s Yoga Month! I lean heavily on a daily yoga practice to maintain physical and mental balance, so I am eager to share our annual yoga section with you. Get to know some of our local studios and learn how there is truly a class for everybody, from vinyasa at Flora-Bama to yoga with the alpacas.

In celebration of National Yoga Month, Natural Awakenings teamed up with local photographer Samantha Cooper for a photo shoot of local yoga teachers at Jubilee Suites, in Fairhope, Alabama. Plans for a sunset backdrop were abandoned when Cooper discovered a hidden boardwalk winding into a wooded area. “I felt like I escaped into an exotic jungle full of rich greens, surrounded by trees and leaves and quiet sounds of nature. It made for the most perfect backdrop while capturing the quintessential soft yoga flows of some local instructors. It was also the perfect escape from reality while shooting from behind the lens,” says Cooper, who specializes in combining the beauty of nature with individual, children and family photography. Featured on the cover is Amber Warner who teaches Buti Yoga and Hot Power Vinyasa at Soul Shine Yoga in Fairhope and Daphne. “I love the transformation of mind and body that comes with the practice of yoga and feel drawn to share that experience with others,” she says. Dementia Screenings for Alzheimer’s Month The Mind Performance Center, LLC, in Foley, is encouraging locals to schedule a dementia screening in September, which is World Alzheimer’s Month. This international campaign raises awareness and challenges the stigma that surrounds dementia. “Dementia is correctable but it’s important that patients don’t ignore the signs,” says Dr. J. Douglas Brown, DC, DACNB who is one of only a few functional neurologists in the U.S. providing brain pathway activation therapy in conjunction with deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (which regenerates abundant release of neurotransmitters) and the science-based nutritional program of Alzheimer’s researcher Dale Bredesen. The unique non-drug treatment approach has helped dementia patients that originally scored in the teens on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment be restored to the point of scoring normal (26 to 30) on the same assessment. The center also treats ADHD, depression (even treatment-resistant depression), traumatic brain injury, autism, stroke and Parkinson’s. “The results of our treatments are tangible, often delivering improvement when nothing else has,” says Brown. Monthly Peace Devotion for Women Held in Fairhope The Baha’is of Fairhope now host Peace Devotions, a monthly prayer devotion for women held every third Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Fairhope. “Those who attend are from many different religions, or no particular religion at all; but, they each have a sincere belief in God and a passion for peace on Earth,” says Tess Wacker, author of Women Who Pray For Peace, a book about why women are being called today to change things for the better in this world. “Heartfelt prayers are surely needed in the world today to bring about peace,” Wacker says. “And feminine energy is desperately needed to bring balance and harmony back to our planet.” Each Peace Devotion begins with prayers for peace from different religions around the world, followed by a quiet meditation time that incorporates music to soothe and inspire the soul. Membership Program Offers Discounted IV Vitamin Therapy enrG-IV in Orange Beach has launched a new membership program. Members pay $24.99 per month, which allows them to purchase one intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy for $75 (regularly $149). Additionally, members receive 10 percent off other purchases throughout the month including all supplements, nutritional IV packages, ozone therapy and use of the BEMER device. IV nutrition administers vitamins, minerals and other nutrients directly into the bloodstream through an IV drip. Because it bypasses digestion, nutrients are completely absorbed, resulting in faster, longer lasting relief. “You only absorb 20 percent of anything you take in orally but you absorb 100 percent of what you get by IV. This saturates the cells with nutrition and feeds mitochondria,” says enrG-IV owner and registered nurse Janet Baker. “Most clients feel better before the bag is finished.” IV vitamin therapy can help reduce discomfort and fatigue, and increase collagen production naturally. enrG-IV offers medium and high dose Vitamin C to help reduce the signs of aging and plump the skin. The addition of B vitamins and amino acids can help with muscle development and energy. Athletes benefit from IV nutrition as a natural way to reduce recovery time, improve muscle development and promote a competitive edge. Location: 3099 Loop Rd., Unit 4, Orange Beach, Alabama. For more information, call 251-273-1323 or visit enrGIV.com. See ad, page 15.
Offering a Spiritual Path to Personal Growth Akashic Records Consultant and spiritual counselor Betsey Grady is offering first-time clients a 20 percent discount on sessions booked in September. She teaches others how to deepen self-awareness and conscious thought so that they can navigate life and manifest the reality that they desire. She currently offers sessions in Fairhope, Birmingham and Atlanta and is available to travel for group sessions. Betsey Grady In Sanskrit, Akasha means “where all things are from” and it is believed that from a soul’s inception all of its experiences are recorded in the Akasha and stored in the Akashic Records. Grady shares messages from the Akashic Records with individuals, couples and groups. In a session (which is always confidential), the client(s) will ask questions related to relationships, health, career, past lives, departed loved ones, animals or whatever is on their mind, and together they explore the messages of the records. “It’s a fascinating and spiritual experience that will leave you inspired and connected with the joyful energy of the divine,” says Grady. “Connecting with departed loved ones is one of the most rewarding aspects of this work; it brings such peace and understanding to those struggling with grief and feeling left behind or abandoned.”
Course Guides Individualized Nutrition Dr. Wanda Seitz, N.D. will be teaching a four-day class on Reams Biological Theory of Ionization (RBTI) in Biloxi, November 7 to 10. RBTI is a non-invasive seven-part analysis of body chemistry that allows individuals to understand precisely his or her nutritional and diet needs for optimal health. “RBTI is not a measurement of disease but a scientific measurement of health,” says Seitz. “Why guess when you can know? One must know what health is before we can attain it and that is exactly what RBTI allows us to do.” This course provides the basic information for body chemistry evaluation and food and nutrition choices to ensure a life of wellness. Students will learn how to test themselves and others, making it a perfect class for parents wanting to provide proper nutrition for their family. The class is also available through online correspondence at SouthernInstituteOfNaturalHealth. com. For more information, email DrWanda@SouthernInstituteOf NaturalHealth.com. See listing, page 41.

A Season for Natural Alignment
Charity Event Teaches Couples Massage
Eastern Shore Rolfing encourages clients to use this time of year for a whole-body check in. “For many, the beginning of a new school year marks the beginning of a new year in every way,” says owner Pam Reaves. “Slowing down often reveals aches and pains we have been ignoring, so it may be time to address your body in a whole new systematic way.” Rolfing Structural Integration is a unique form of body work that looks at the whole body, including lifestyle, posture and genetics. Using slow, intentional pressure, a Certified Rolfer helps hydrate bound up tissue so that you can live in your body with more ease and less pain. According to Reaves, one client reported more relief after one Rolfing session than three months of physical therapy. When Rolfing improves overall posture it is common for the patient to gain more space between the ears and shoulders, arms that hang more freely and a more aligned vertical line between the head, shoulders, hips and knees. Reaves is now accepting new patients interested in transforming their own lives through the power of touch.
During the month of September, Jubilee Healing Arts will host How to Massage Your Partner classes in Daphne as part of a nationwide charity event. The three-hour classes being offered on September 14, 15, 21 and 22 will benefit Ashton Kutcher’s THORN Program, which has rescued over 6,000 children from child trafficking and sex slavery. A free health and wellness vendor fair will be offered on September 21 and open to the public. The group massage classes will be offered to 15 couples at a time and will cover back, shoulder, scalp and foot massage. Partners will learn how to communicate better and how to provide a more intuitive, effective and safe massage in a fun and experiential class environment. Wine and gourmet snacks will be provided. These classes do require two participants but romantic partners are not required. “It’s truly a one of a kind experience and a date that keeps on giving,” says Jen Adams, owner of Jubilee Healing Arts. kudos For the first time in history, a giant squid was filmed in its deepwater habitat in U.S. waters, and Bayside Academy’s STEAM Coordinator, Dr. Megan McCall, was there. The only other time a giant squid has been filmed in its habitat was in 2012 off the coast of Japan. McCall was one of only 12 researchers on the 15-day expedition in the Gulf of Mexico this past June. The expedition, Journey into Midnight: Light and Life Below the Twilight Zone, was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research to explore what happens to deep-sea animals when a very important constraint is taken away from them—that of light. “I lost 35 pounds of stressful, depressing fat!” “Seven months ago I called myself a ‘hot mess’. I was depressed, out of energy and ready to give up at every turn. I couldn’t stand the way I looked and felt any more. During my hypnosis screening I cried because things I wanted for myself finally seemed possible. I felt relief and started seeing things differently from that day. I’ve lost another 5 pounds since this picture was taken for a total of 40! Why? Because it’s so easy to do, and I feel better with every pound gone.”

Climate Changes Upend Farming
Deathly Air
Pollution More Deadly Than Cigarettes
Toxic air is killing more people in Europe than tobacco smoking, according to new research published in the European Heart Journal. The number of early deaths caused by air pollution is double previous estimates and the lives of 800,000 people worldwide are cut short by an average of more than two years, the scientists calculated. Although air pollution enters through the lungs, its impact via the bloodstream on heart disease and strokes is responsible for twice as many deaths as respiratory diseases. Penny Woods, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, says, “Toxic air doesn’t just cut lives short. It also seriously affects the health and quality of life of millions of people.”
Cultivation throughout the U.S. is becoming more difficult because of unpredictable weather patterns, leading to higher prices and lowered productivity. Farmers are finding that a shift of two or three weeks in a growing season can upset supply chains, labor schedules and other agricultural variables, like the routes that honeybees travel to pollinate fields. Also, climate change is driving a rise in pest infestations that will keep growers scrambling to keep up with rapidly changing conditions. “Decades-long patterns of frost, heat and rain, never entirely predictable, but once reliable enough, have broken down. In regions where the term climate change still meets with skepticism, some simply call the weather extreme or erratic. But most agree that something unusual is happening,” reports The New York Times.

Elephants Never Forget—What They Smell
According to a new report from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, elephants have such sensitive olfactory discrimination that they can determine different amounts of food just by sniffing it. Most animals use visual acuity to determine quantities of food, but this study shows that it’s important for psychologists to incorporate into experimental designs the ways in which different animals interact with their environment using all of their senses.

The Amazon Rain Forest continues to lose habitat for animals and plants by clear cutting practices that add to the burden of climate change. According to satellite imaging data compiled in 2018 by Global Forest Watch and analysts at the University of Maryland, removing large patches of forest to make room for ranching caused the highest loss of forest cover overall, along with other commercial activities like mining and soy production. The World Resources Institute, which tracks global forest cover, reports deforestation is increasing in Brazil, Indonesia, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. Large swaths of forest serve as carbon sinks, helping suck excess carbon emissions from the atmosphere. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has promised to open the Amazon for industry and recently slashed funding to environmental and science research groups.

Farmers Responding to Climate Change
nd3000v/Shutterstock.com
Climate change has inspired farmers to turn to regenerative agriculture, which pulls carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and stores it in their soil. Regenerative agriculture incorporates the practices of planting trees, cover cropping, no-till farming and rotational grazing. As the groundswell of support grows, 250 soil health bills have been introduced in state and federal legislatures in the last two years. At a U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee climate change hearing, Nebraska soybean farmer Matthew Rezac said that keeping soil healthy, not just reducing greenhouse gas emissions, was a key part of what farmers could do to cool a warming planet. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the bills have different justifications, but they all focus on soil health. As disastrous floods and drought sweep away farmland, the idea that regenerative agriculture could make for more productive farming is gaining traction.

New York State Bans Plastic Bags
On Earth Day, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a statewide ban on singleuse plastic bags in retail stores that goes into effect next March. It’s estimated that New York uses 23 billion plastic bags every year, with 50 percent ending up in landfills and around cities and waterways. New York is the third state in which plastic bags are illegal, after California and Hawaii.

Solar panels currently generate only about 1 percent of our nation’s energy needs, but new research from the federal National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows that installation of “floatovoltaics”—floating, electricitygenerating photovoltaic panels—on only one-fourth of our manmade reservoirs would generate about 10 percent of U.S. energy needs without taking up valuable real estate. Floatovoltaics cost less to install than traditional, land-based solar panels because there’s no need to clear land or treat soil, and research shows that the natural cooling effect of the water below can boost the solar panels’ power production by up to 22 percent. Of the approximately 100 current floatovoltaic installations, only seven are in the U.S., mostly at wineries in California and water treatment facilities. About 80 percent are in Japan, where limited land and roof space make water-based solar panels especially suitable.

PARENTING Preparing Kids for the Future by Meredith Montgomery
T
oday’s children have more opportunities to change the world than ever before. Teenagers are organizing global activism movements, LEGO lovers are mastering robotics and young entrepreneurs are launching successful businesses before they’re old enough to drive. But for Mom and Dad, this fast-paced, technology-driven childhood looks drastically different from their own. To help kids thrive, parents must learn to mindfully embrace today’s modern advances without losing sight of timeless virtues and skills such as kindness, creativity and critical thinking.
Finding Balance After-school hours used to be filled with outdoor free play in which kids independently developed their natural capabilities as self-learners and creative problemsolvers. The Children & Nature Network has reported that just 6 percent of children ages 9 to 13 play outside on their own. Instead, stress and anxiety are on the rise in our competitive culture as many kids attempt to balance heavy homework loads with an overflowing schedule of extracurricular activities. With the ability to connect to the world at our fingertips, Thomas Murray, director of innovation for Future Ready Schools, in Washington, D.C., notes that devices can also disconnect us from those right next to us. “It’s a massive struggle to find balance and mindfulness, but it’s vitally important. How often do we see an AP [advanced placement] kid that is falling apart emotionally? As parents, we need to recognize that kids have a lot on their plate—more than ever before.” Salt Lake City-based Courtney Carver, author of Soulful Simplicity: How Living with Less Can Lead to So Much 14
More, worries that parents are creating résumés for a life their children probably don’t want. On her BeMoreWithLess.com website, she focuses on living with less clutter, busyness and stress to simplify life and d i s c ove r w h at really matters. “It’s challenging to maintain close connections when we’re over whelmed with what’s in our inbox, or on Instagram or what the kids are looking at online,” she says. On her own journey to practical minimalism, she gained a greater sense of pres ence wit h her daughter. “When you can pay atten-

tion to a conversation and not feel distracted and antsy, especially with young kids, that is everything,” says Carver.
Managing Technology The ubiquity of digital devices is a defining difference between today’s youth and that of their elders, making it difficult for parents to relate and know how to set boundaries. As senior parenting editor at nonprofit Common Sense Media, Caroline Knorr helps parents make sense of what’s going on in their kids’ media lives. “We can think of media as a ‘super peer’: When children are consuming it, they’re looking for cues on how to behave and what’s cool and what’s normal.” Parents need to be the intermediary so they can counterbalance the external messages with their own family’s values.

Today’s devices are persuasive and addictive. “As parents, we need to set boundaries, model good digital habits and help kids to self-regulate more—which is our ultimate goal,” Knorr says. To raise good digital citizens, Richard Culatta, CEO of International Society for Technology in Education, in Arlington, Virginia, believes conversations about device use shouldn’t end with screen time limits and online safety. “Ask kids if their technology use is helping them be more engaged and find more meaning in the world or is it pulling them out of the world that they’re in,” he says. “Talk about how to use technology to improve the community around you, recognize true and false info, be involved in democratic processes and making your voice heard about issues you care about.” Parents are often uncomfortable with their kids socializing digitally, but Culatta encourages the introduction of interactive media sooner rather than later, so they understand how to engage with the world online before they are old enough to have social media accounts. Geocaching, which uses GPS-enabled devices to treasure hunt, and citizen science apps provide familyfriendly opportunities to engage in both outdoor activities and online communities. “The majority of our kids will need these digital communication skills to be
It’s a massive struggle to find balance and mindfulness, but it’s vitally important. How often do we see an AP [advanced placement] kid that is falling apart emotionally? ~Thomas Murray able to work with anyone at any time,” says Murray. He’s witnessed the impact of connecting classrooms around the world, observing, “When students learn to navigate time zones and language barriers to communicate and collaborate, they see that they can solve the world’s problems together.”
“The world doesn’t care how much our children know; what the world cares about is what they do with what they know,” says Tony Wagner, senior research fellow at the Learning Policy Institute, an education research and policy nonprofit in Palo Alto, California. In his latest book, Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing Our Kids for The Innovation Era, he emphasizes the importance of creative problem-solving and the joy of discovery, especially as more jobs become automated. “We’re born with a temperament of creative problem solvers. But then something happens. The longer kids are in school, the fewer questions they ask, the more they worry about getting the right answer and fewer and fewer think of themselves as creative in any way,” he says. “Instead of listening and regurgitating, kids need to learn how to find and be a critical consumer of information,” says Murray. Fewer employers are asking for college transcripts—including Google—as they discover the disconnect between what students are taught and what innovative skills they actually need. While most schools are slow to adapt to the modern needs of the future workforce, parents can proactively foster the entrepreneurial spirit and discourage a fear of failure at home by offering safe opportunities for risk-taking and independence. ing extensively with compelling young innovators around the world, Wagner discovered that their parents explicitly encouraged three things: play, passion and purpose. Their children were provided with many opportunities to explore new interests, as well as to learn from their mistakes. “The parents intuitively understood that more important than IQ is grit, perseverance and tenacity. You don’t develop that when Mom is yelling at you to practice; you develop it because you have a real interest.” To create a culture of innovation, Murray encourages teachers and parents to get to know the interests, passions and strengths of today’s children “and prove to them every day that they matter.” When that interest blossoms into a passion, it can lead to a deeper sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference. According to Wagner, this happens when parents and teachers instill one simple, but profound moral lesson, “We are not here
on this Earth primarily and only to serve ourselves; we have some deep, profound obligation to give back and to serve others.” Sesame Workshop’s 2016 Kindness Study found that 70 percent of parents worry that the world is an unkind place for their kids, but Scarlett Lewis believes it’s all in our mind, saying, “When you choose love, you transform how you see the world from a scary and anxiety-producing place to a loving and welcoming one.” After losing her 6-year-old son Jesse in the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, she attributed the tragedy to an angry thought in the mind of the shooter. Her compassion fueled the founding of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement to educate and encourage individuals to choose loving thoughts over angry ones. “Although we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can always choose how to respond,” she says. The evidence-based Choose Love Enrichment Program teaches children to live a life with courage and gratitude, practice forgiveness and be compassionate individuals. While we don’t want to overwhelm kids with all the evils in the world, Lickona notes that it is valuable to make them aware of human suffering and how we can help. “Cultivate the belief that we’re all members of a single human family. Teach [them] that one of the most important ways to show gratitude for the blessings in our life is to give back.”

The Pure Joy of Play
Why Kids Need Unstructured Fun by Ronica O’Hara
N
ot so long ago, kids would be shooed out the door to play and told to return home at meal time. But the rising use of digital devices and kids’ highly scheduled sports and school activities, as well as parental fears about safety, has made that kind of unstructured play rare—with resulting drops in children’s independence, resilience and creativity, experts say. In fact, play has been shown to be so critical to children’s development that an American Academy of Pediatrics 2018 clinical report, “The Power of Play,” recommends that doctors write prescriptions for it. “Play is not frivolous; it is brain building,” concludes the report. It defines play as voluntary, fun and spontaneous activities that engross a child, often resulting in joyous discovery, and includes imaginative makebelieve, experimenting and risk-taking. It cites 147 studies showing that play builds skills critical for adult success such as problem solving, collaboration and creativity; decreases stress, fatigue, injury and depres-

By age 6, 60 percent of American boys and 47 percent of girls are participating on organized sport teams, but three out of four kids quit sports by age 13—one major reason being, “I was not having fun.” Play, on the other hand, is based on pure enjoyment and spontaneous collaboration among kids, minus overanxious adult “sidelining”. “When children play in their own ways, they generally play cooperatively. Ayurvedic Cooking
Ancient System Restores Balance by April Thompson

“
n Ayurveda, food is medicine,” says Susan Weis-Bohlen, the Reisterstown, Maryland, instructor and author of Ayurveda Beginner’s Guide: Essential Ayurvedic Principles and Practices to Balance and Heal Naturally. “How we feed ourselves is the first line of disease prevention and longevity.” First developed in India some 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It works to rebalance mental and physical health in coordination with mind-body energy types called doshas. The primary ones—Vata, Pitta and Kapha—correlate to the five elements of space, air, fire, earth and water, and can fluctuate over time. An Ayurvedic diet can help address dosha imbalances and optimize health and wellbeing. New York City chef, restauranteur and author Divya Alter embraced Ayurveda while suffering from an autoimmune disorder that conventional medicine couldn’t cure. “Food was instrumental to my healing,” she says.
Eating in Season “Ayurveda is about living in harmony. Eating seasonally and locally, you not only get the most nourishment, but also rekindle your relationship to food and the environment,” says Nishita Shah, of The Ayurvedic Institute, in Albuquerque. “In Ayurveda, we look to seasons to determine what to eat based on what is naturally available, like eating light juicy fruits in summer rather than the heavy root vegetables abundant in winter,” notes Weis-Bohlen. Spices and herbs have powerful healing properties that can be combined in different ways to balance doshas in tune with the seasons. “In winter, use warming spices like ginger, cinnamon or chilies, and in summer, season with cooling spices like coriander and fennel, or fresh herbs like cilantro,” says Alter. 20

Proper combination and selection of ingredients are a critical component of Ayurveda, according to Alter, author of What to Eat for How You Feel: The New Ayurvedic Kitchen. She says, “Well-prepared food is easy to digest and protects prana—the food’s living force or energy—so it can nourish and energize.” Ayurveda also focuses on the “six tastes” ideally present in every dish: sweet, sour, salty, astringent, bitter and pungent. “Western cuisine has a strong salty and sweet bias. Health issues arise from an imbalanced palate,” says Shah. Alter adjusts taste profiles according to the season and the individual’s dosha. “Bitter foods can be very cleansing and help eliminate winter sluggishness. More pungent foods are good in the spring, when the body may feel congested and heavy after winter,” she says. To address diners’ differing doshas at her restaurant, Divya’s Kitchen, Alter focuses on seasonal dishes that incorporate all six tastes. “By definition, these are tri-doshic foods which can balance all three dosha types.” Good tri-doshic foods include asparagus in spring, berries in summer and root vegetables in winter. “Cooked leafy greens can also be tri-doshic,” says Alter, adding that spices can tweak the natural dosha effect of a given food.
Ancient Cooking for Modern Lifestyles Ayurveda’s rules of the kitchen—such as avoiding cold, raw, processed or microwaved foods, not combining fruits with other foods, and making lunch the heaviest meal of the day—can run counter to the typical Western diet, but with time, Ayurvedic cooking can become intuitive. Ayurvedic meals don’t need to be complicated or challenging to prepare. “A simple apple or plain rice can nourish us,” says Shah. One of Alter’s favorite recipes is an apple or pear stewed with cloves, prepared and eaten first thing in the morning to stimulate the digestive system. Plain almonds are another good protein snack, especially in aiding digestion when soaked and peeled, she advises. A “Buddha bowl” packed with colorful, sautéed vegetables, lentils and a grain like quinoa, barley or millet makes for a simple,
nourishing, well-balanced meal, says Shah. “I try to add just enough spice to enhance the flavor, while still being able to taste the sweetness of a carrot or the bitterness of chard.” A cook’s mindset is as important as the meal itself, say Ayurvedic practitioners. Alter believes mindfulness while cooking and eating not only enhances our experience, but also our digestion. Ayurvedic cooking should be fun, ignite curiosity and taste great—not feel restrictive or lack flavor, says Shah. “Food should bring joy, and bring us back in tune with our bodies. Our bodies are smart and will tell us what they need.” April Thompson is a freelance writer in Washington, D.C. Connect at AprilWrites.com.

The Beginner’s Ayurvedic Kitchen
T
he rules of Ayurvedic cooking can seem overwhelming, but there are simple ways to start aligning our diet with its principles. “There is a profound knowledge behind Ayurvedic cooking, but the methods of preparation are easy; you don’t need to be a skilled chef,” says chef, restauranteur and author Divya Alter. “One portion of food should fit in your hands when cupped together,” says Nishita Shah, of The Ayurvedic Institute. “Any more is going above and beyond what the body needs and can handle.” “Energetic imbalances can fluctuate, so what you need now doesn’t have to be what you eat for the rest of your life,” says Alter. Shah uses color to guide her cooking, declaring a dish done when its greens are at peak vibrancy. Alter stresses eating according to the strength of your digestion. “Someone with a fiery or strong digestion may need to eat heavier foods and more frequent meals.” Cooking with fresh, high-quality and ideally, organic ingredients is key. Food should be prepared soon after purchase and consumed soon after preparation to maximize flavors and nutrition. Ayurvedic cooking enhances natural flavors, while optimizing digestion, nutrient absorption and waste elimination. “How you experience food after a meal is just as important as how you feel while eating it. Deep frying, charring or cooking at high temperatures makes food hard to digest, overheats the liver and causes acidity,” says Alter.

Iyengar-Inspired Yoga Teacher Training Offered in Mobile Alabama Healing Arts in Mobile is accepting applications for their yoga teacher training program set to start in November. Instructor Kelly Laurendine, E-RYT500, bases the 200-, 300- and 500-hour hatha yoga trainings on the instructional foundations of her certified Iyengar teachers, who worked with and developed their training in consultation with world-renowned teacher, Rodney Yee. Each program develops the use of detailed instruction and props to ensure proper body alignment and safety. Fundamental sciences, specific teaching methodologies, breath/meditation practices and yogic philosophy are also covered so graduates will qualify to become registered yoga teachers through Yoga Alliance. Laurendine has been teaching since 1999 and completed 1,000 teacher training hours. As a massage therapy instructor, she has taught anatomy and physiology, kinesiology and Eastern concept-based classes for 12 years. “Teaching and sharing yoga is an engaging and fulfilling opportunity that offers great creativity and personal reflection and growth,” says Laurendine. “My hope is to offer trainings with the same level of awareness, generosity, insightfulness and compassion as my teachers; a program of high integrity with a heart-centered approach to living and learning in an environment geared for personal empowerment and professional success.” For more information, call 251-753-1937, email Info@AlabamaHealingArts.com or visit AlabamaHealingArts.com. Soul Shine Yoga Expands to Daphne Soul Shine students are now enjoying classes in both Fairhope and Daphne. The new Daphne studio, located at 28623 North Main Street, offers their signature Hot Power Hour and Hot Restore: Hips & Hamstrings, as well as Core Fusion Fit classes, an instructor’s choice workout mixing suspension training, barre, yoga and select low-impact body weight exercises to develop core strength, endurance and stamina. “As our Soul Shine community continues to grow, we wanted to make classes more accessible for our students in Daphne and Spanish Fort. Opening our studio in Daphne has been an incredible way to offer a greater variety of classes and continue to grow yoga along the Eastern Shore,” says owner Emily Sommerville. The Fairhope location continues to offer over 40 heated and unheated classes each week. Soul Shine class passes and memberships are redeemable at both locations. Yoga Fair and Food Drive Engage Local Yogis In recognition of National Yoga Month, local yoga instructors have teamed up to celebrate the area’s vibrant yoga community with Yoga Week, from September 7 to 13. Studios along the Gulf Coast are inviting new students to free classes with a cash or canned food donation for Feeding the Gulf Coast, which can provide five meals for every dollar raised. Throughout September, other workshops and events are also being offered in exchange for food donations to coincide with Hunger Action Month. Each year, Yoga Month provides an average of 3,500 meals to families and individuals in need along the Gulf Coast. Yoga Week will kick off on September 7 at Fairhope Pier Park. At 4:30 p.m. Sunflower Cafe will provide a light snack while people mingle and learn about yoga and health from instructors and informational booths. At 5:30 p.m. Amy Jinks will lead a beginner friendly Kundalini style yoga practice followed by a gong bath at 6:30 p.m. until sunset. There is no cost for the event, but attendees are encouraged to bring a cash or canned food donation for local food banks. No experience is necessary, but participants should bring water and their own mat or beach towel. For more information, call 251-9294020 or visit ThriveFairhope.com. See ad, page 28. September 2019

For the Love of Animals
Dana and Chris Garrett, owners of Synergy Yoga & Pilates in Mobile, have brought their love for cats to the studio with Yoga for Cats, a quarterly class that brings friendly, adoptable cats and kittens to play during event. Once they learned of Project Purr Animal Rescue’s work, the studio owners wanted to help raise funds and awareness for all the felines that need loving homes. “We see many events on social media and the news supporting rescued and abandoned dogs, but very few for cats,” notes Chris. “We know the fun energy kittens can bring, and we figured if goat yoga can become popular, why not yoga with the cats?” Yes, goat yoga is a national trend, but in Silverhill, Alabama, Humming Star Alpaca Farm hosts Alpaca Yoga. “The alpacas pair well with yoga as they foster a calm, peaceful atmosphere,” says farm owner Cheryl Bowen. “The alpacas meander around, stopping at each yogi’s mat for a bit of grain. The teacher Joy Larsen integrates the yoga practice with alpaca interaction in an amazing way.” Yoga with the alpacas is offered monthly and like Yoga for Cats, is accessible to people with all levels of yoga experience.
A Brain Boost
Kelly Laurendine, owner of Alabama Healing Arts, has researched diet and yoga for stress and anxiety for years, but recently her emphasis shifted to brain health. “I lost my father to Alzheimer’s and now my mom’s memory is in decline, so memory loss is of great concern,” she says. After doing extensive research on the benefits of exercise, yoga, meditation and breath practices for the brain, she created Brain Boost Yoga. This weekly class, offered on Thursday mornings, teaches 30 minutes of mindful movement and yoga, followed by a 20-minute meditation practice. “This class stimulates the brain, From top: Flora-Bama Flow; Alpaca Yoga; Live Music Yoga; Yoga on Tap; 24

Worship in the Studio Pneuma is a Greek word meaning “breath of God” and, appropriately, Pneuma Yoga Studio in Daphne offers Outstretched, a donation-based community class which features yoga and devotion. “Come as you are, give what you can and be blessed by this gift of worship and yoga,” owner Kara Palmer says of the class, which is offered every Wednesday morning. Outstretched is also the name of the studio’s nonprofit, which was founded by Susan Bordenkircher, who wrote the book Yoga for Christians and produced yoga DVDs called Outstretched in Worship. Inspired by the live worship music yoga classes at her teacher training, Palmer also offers Acoustic Gentle Yoga once a month. This candlelight class is taught to live Christian music played by Angel Thrash of 3 Circle Church. Palmer says, “This is an intimate worship experience, so come to your yoga mat ready to connect your mind, body and spirit to God.”
Live Music, Bars and Yogis Orange Beach Yoga owner Jamie Robertson also enjoys having live music at her yoga classes. “So many talented musicians have moved to the area and I love to share their talent with our yoga students,” says Robertson, who invites a range of artists to accompany her classes about once a month. Most of the
musicians she works with are upbeat, playing southern rock, light country and beach music. “I don’t want to stress the musicians by telling them what to play. I just ask that they start slow, peak and then end slow, and we teach a general vinyasa flow class.” Flora-Bama Flow is another unique class offered by Orange Beach Yoga. Every Friday morning yogis practice at the Flora-Bama Ole River Grill under the large covered porch with a waterfront view. “Because we attract a lot of tourists, this is an extremely diverse class—it’s exciting to see such a wide range of fitness levels. There may be a first time yoga student right next to someone in a headstand. I love seeing the diversity and people that are comfortable doing just what their body needs that day,” says Robertson. Attendees arrive by both land and water (sometimes on a jet ski or in a boat) and after class the bar opens for mimosas and bloody marys. Yoga in bars is not a new concept for the area—Soul Shine’s Yoga on Tap at Fairhope Brewing Company is another popular class. The monthly $5 community class is taught by a rotation of teachers and followed by beer specials. “We started the events to make yoga more accessible in price and location around Fairhope. By extending the yoga community outside of the studio, more people can experience the energy you get from practicing with a large group while meeting new friends with similar interests,” says Soul Shine owner Emily Sommerville.
Some Like it Hot If you attend Sterling Hot Yoga and Well-
ness’ Original Hot Yoga classes in Mobile, you’ll be practicing in a room regulated to 105 degrees and 40 percent humidity. “Our heating system was specially designed to do this because it’s very important to have proper ventilation and controls to achieve this environment,” says owner David Roberts. The heat allows muscles to stretch more deeply and more safely while the sweating helps cleanse and detox the body. Unlike most yoga classes, Original Hot Yoga (also called 26 and 2 or Bikram Hot Yoga) guides students through the same series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in each class. The comprehensive series helps restore and maintain natural range of motion, improves flexibility, reduces stress and sheds pounds. Soul Shine Yoga in Fairhope uses infrared radiant heat to maintain a temperature of 90 degrees in its heated room. Hot Restore: Hips & Hamstrings focuses on poses that will deeply open the hips, hamstrings, quads, low back and side body—perfect for runners, cyclists and golfers and those wanting to acclimate to a hot class at a slower pace. “Our students love this class,” says Sommerville. “It’s perfect for recovery, whether a student is recovering from an illness, injury or an intense workout. The evening classes offer the extra bonus of promoting a deep night's sleep.” As the yoga world embraces these innovative approaches to an ancient tradition, it’s giving experienced yogis an opportunity to spice up their regular routines while also attracting an even broader audience. Yoga is for everybody, now more than ever.

Fewer Health Risks, Stronger Bones
The Power of Yoga
Tapping Into the Life Force by Marlaina Donato

ongevity is something most of us strive for, and increasingly, research shows that implementing a consistent yoga practice can be a fruitful investment toward that goal. Yoga is an eight-branch system of well-being that encompasses exercise, meditation, conscious breathing, diet and other elements, but how it effects mind-body fitness alone is proving to be a reliable defense against age-related loss of mobility, cardiovascular disease and depression. Its stress-busting capabilities help to support challenged adrenal glands and lower elevated blood pressure. Getting on the mat can improve insulin sensitivity in diabetics and also help balance immune responses in individuals with autoimmune conditions or insufficient natural killer cells. Combined research from 22 studies by the University of Edinburgh reveals that yoga, compared to both sedentary lifestyles and other forms of exercise such as walking or chair aerobics, improved the lower-body strength and flexibility in individuals age 60 and older. The findings published earlier this year in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity also showed improved quality of sleep and fewer symptoms of depression.

Yoga’s inverted poses increase blood circulation to vital organs, including the intestines, which facilitates assimilation of nutrients and waste elimination. Asanas like shoulder stand, bridge and downward-facing dog stimulate blood flow from the lower extremities to the heart and fortify red blood cells by increasing hemoglobin, guarding against blood clots, stroke and heart attack. Yoga can also strengthen the bones. A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Yoga shows improved bone mineral density in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. “Much like a house that sits empty or a car left to sit unused in a garage, our human parts can age and rot without movement. Movement creates more energy,” explains Nancy Poole, a teacher at Clarksburg Yoga and Wellness, in Clarksburg, Maryland. Joints lose flexibility as we age, but yoga movement provides them with essential oxygen, blood and nutrients. Lisa Moore, owner of Free to Be Yoga, in Great Falls, Montana, underscores, “A joint needs to move through its full range of motion to function well. Movement helps lubricate and cushion joints, provides nutrition and removes wastes.”
Stretching Into Joy
A 2014 hatha yoga study published in the Journals of Gerontology revealed increased cognitive function in older adults after eight weeks of yoga three times a week. Yoga’s super power lies in its capacity to reset the autonomic nervous system and ramp up mood-boosting serotonin while decreasing monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that disarms the effects of stress hormones like cortisol. Under the influence of yoga, the brain is bathed in calming neurotransmitters, combatting depression and anxiety, and instilling a sense of optimism. “Yoga also helps us to embrace the hard times and ride the waves. With the tools that yoga provides, we can swim toward the light. It also helps us to experience a more intimate relationship with body and soul, and in turn make better choices in all aspects of life,” notes Carmen Ferreira, owner of the Sunshine Barre Studio, in Rocky Point, New York. Moore concurs, advising, “Yoga gives

Conscious breathing is at the core of a dedicated yoga practice, and a lowered risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease gives us another reason to inhale and exhale deeply. Poole observes, “Our general population does not breathe correctly, and many of us even hold our breath unconsciously. For my students, the hardest part of yoga is learning to take deep, full breaths. Old breathing habits must be unlearned. Once attention is given to the breath, tensions can be released.” “Yoga improves lung capacity and brings more energy to the cells, which in turn creates more energy and life force in our bodies,” says Ferreira. “It helps us to live from the heart’s center and foster a better quality of life,” she adds. “Each time we show up on our mats, we show up for ourselves, an opportunity to nourish the body, our one and only temple.”

hrive Yoga & Massage, just north of Gayfer Avenue, on 181, in Fairhope, offers a variety of classes and treatments for a range of needs and interests. Mindfulness, breathing and alignment are the basis for all of the studio’s classes, and all are beginner-friendly. “It's important for everyone to know there are many styles of yoga for every body and each style can serve different phases of life,” says owner Billie Reinhart. “Our diverse schedule allows practitioners to find classes that resonate with their needs.” For a gentler class, chair yoga (offered three times a week) accommodates students who have trouble getting down to the floor. Yin yoga focuses on holding poses for a longer stretch to increase flexibility, while Lay & Restore in the evening features passive poses that open the body effortlessly. For those wanting to move more, a variety of flow classes offer the most strengthening, while Align ‘n Shine dissects the practice and postures. Private yoga sessions and passive Thai Yoga Massage stretching are also available by appointment. See ad, page 22.

terling Hot Yoga & Wellness was the first hot yoga studio in Alabama and is the only studio offering Original Hot Yoga and Inferno Hot Pilates. When it opened in October 2010, the studio, then-named Bikram Hot Yoga Mobile, only offered the Original Hot 90-minute yoga class. “While we still teach the original healing, therapeutic sequence that improves flexibility, reduces anxiety and so much more, our classes have been expanded,” says owner David Roberts. The schedule also includes high-intensity interval training with Inferno Hot Pilates, weight training with Iron Hour, core-building through Vinyasa Flow and Hot Vinyasa Flow, and mindfulness and meditation through Yin and Yoga Nidra. All of these classes work together to enhance the benefits of each style of practice as do the studio’s wellness offerings of massage, reiki energy healing, body contouring and whole-body light therapy treatments. Located on the thriving corner of Old Shell and Florida Street in Midtown Mobile, Roberts says, “We are reminded daily of the need to slow down and take some time for ourselves. We’d love for you to join us!” For $30, new members get access to unlimited practice for 30 days. See ad, page 28. September 2019

hen Soul Shine Yoga opened its doors in downtown Fairhope, owner Emily Sommerville gathered a team of 10 passionate yoga teachers to provide a welcoming, inspirational hot yoga experience. Five years later, with over 60 heated and unheated classes a week, and locations in Fairhope and Daphne, Soul Shine has grown into a well-respected community known for its exceptional yoga and wellness programs. “Yoga has been a part of my life for over 20 years. Since opening the studio, I’ve been surrounded by the most amazing people, teachers and students, every single day. I’ve had an opportunity to transform my life through yoga and I find so much joy in sharing this practice with others,” says Sommerville. Soul Shine teachers are dedicated, seasoned professionals with a minimum of 200 hours of yoga training. Classes are available for all levels of practitioners. Heated classes in Fairhope are held in a room with five custom infrared radiant heat panels—a therapeutic, clean heat source. Unheated classes and meditations round out the weekly schedule. The studio also offers yoga and wellness workshops, private yoga sessions and is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School. See ads, on opposite page and back cover.
Alabama Healing Arts Iyengar-style Makes Yoga Accessible and Safe
A
labama Healing Arts (AHA), in West Mobile, is an occupational college and wellness studio that offers yoga, massage and reiki certification trainings. The center also hosts a full schedule of group yoga classes, plus specialty and continuing education yoga workshops. AHA teachers are Yoga Alliance-certified and trained in Iyengar-style hatha yoga. This style emphasizes detailed instruction and proper alignment in the performance of posture and breath control. Students are guided gradually from simple to more complex poses, and develop their mind, body and spirit through a step-by-step instructional approach. Another specialty of Iyengar yoga is the development and use of props, such as belts, blocks and blankets. These make postures accessible to all ages, helping students perform yoga postures correctly, while minimizing the risk of injury or strain. All group classes are 50 minutes in length and beginner-friendly. Private yoga sessions are available by appointment and are perfect for those seeking personalized instruction such as working with a specific health challenge (back pain, digestive issues) or achieving a specific goal (weight loss, resiliency). Owner Kelly Laurendine says, “It is an amazing experience to offer a space where healing and personal development modalities can be experienced or learned in a heart-centered, mindful way.” See ad, this page. Wild and Wonderful Foraging for Foodies by April Thompson
T
here is such a thing as a free lunch, and it awaits adventurous foragers in backyards, city parks, mountain meadows and even sidewalk cracks. From nutritious weeds and juicy berries to delicate, delicious flowers and refreshing tree sap, wild, edible foods abound in cities, suburbia and rural environments. Throughout most of history, humans were foragers that relied on local plant knowledge for survival, as both food and medicine. Today’s foragers are reviving that ancestral tradition to improve diets, explore new flavors, develop kinship with the environment, and simply indulge in the joy and excitement of finding and preparing wild foods.
Wild Foods As ‘Superdiet’ “There are many benefits to eating wild food,” says Deane Jordan, founder of EatTheWeeds.com, of Orlando, Florida. “Wild plants, because they must take care of themselves, tend to be more nutritious than cultivated plants—particularly in terms of phytochemicals and antioxidants. They also tend to be lower in sugar and other simple carbs, and higher in fiber.” Purslane, a wild succulent, has more omega-3s than any other leafy vegetable, says John Kallas, the Portland, Oregon, author of Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Dirt to Plate. Mustard garlic, a common invasive plant, is the most nutritious leafy green ever analyzed, says Kallas, who holds a Ph.D. in nutrition. “However, the real dietary benefit of foraged plants is in their great diversity, as each has a unique profile of phytochemicals. There is no such thing as a superfood, just superdiets,” he adds.
Know Thy Plant Rule number one of foraging is to be 100 percent sure of your identification 100 percent of the time, says Leda Meredith, the New York City author of The Forager’s Feast: How to Identify, 30
Gulf Coast AL/MS Edition
HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com
Gather, and Prepare Wild Edibles. Foraging experts say the fear of wild plants is largely unfounded. “The biggest misconception is that we are experimenting with unknowns,” says Kallas. “Today’s wild edibles are traditional foods from Native American or European cultures we have lost touch with.” For example, European settlers brought with them dandelions, now considered a nuisance weed, as a source of food and medicine. All parts of it are edible, including flowers, roots and leaves, and have nutritional superpowers. To assess a plant, Kallas adds, a forager must know three things about it: the part or parts that are edible, the stage of growth to gather it and how to prepare it. “Some plants have parts that are both edible and poisonous. Others can be toxic raw, but perfectly edible cooked,” he says. Timing is everything, adds Meredith. “A wild ingredient can be fantastic in one week, and incredibly bitter a week later, so it’s important to know when its prime season is.” Kallas recommends staying away from highly trafficked roadsides and polluted areas. Given that many lawns and public areas are sprayed with herbicides, Sam Thayer, author of The Forager’s Harvest: A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting, and Preparing Edible Wild Plants, recommends not foraging in an area if it’s uncertain whether chemicals have been applied. Environmental awareness includes understanding how foraging may positively or negatively affect the ecosystem, says Meredith. “Overharvesting can endanger future populations. But there is a ‘win-win’ way to forage, where I get fantastic food and the landscape is better for my having foraged, by clearing invasive plants around natives or planting seeds while collecting a local plant gone to seed.” Thayer, of Bruce, Wisconsin, suggests collecting where species are abundant and thriving: “Fruit, for example, can be harvested limitlessly, as can wild invasives that disrupt the balance of the ecosystem and crowd out native species.”
Meal Preparation Vinegars, jams and cordials from wild fruits

and flowers can be wonderful, but require some patience for the payoff, yet many wild edibles can be eaten raw or lightly sautéed, requiring very little prep work. Thayer recommends sautéing wild greens with just a little soy sauce, vinegar and garlic. Foraging builds confidence, powers of observation and connections to the natural world. The biggest benefit, says Thayer, may just be the fun of it. “You can experience food and flavors you cannot have any other way. A lot of these foods you cannot buy anywhere, and really, it’s better food than you can buy.”
All natural. All Hemp.

BEGINNER’S TIPS
D
on’t try to learn foraging; just try to learn about one vegetable or fruit, says Sam Thayer. “Take it one plant at a time. It takes the intimidation out of it.” Find a good local instructor that has a solid background in botany and other fundamentals of foraging, says John Kallas. “Also, get some good books, and more than one, as each will offer different dimensions,” says the author and instructor. Conquer the fear of Latin and learn the scientific names of plants, suggests Leda Meredith. As there may be several plants with the same common name, or one plant with many common names, knowing scientific names will help clear up potential confusion in identifying them. You don’t have to go far to find food, says Deane Jordan. “In reality, there is often a greater selection around your neighborhood than in state parks. In suburbia, you find native species, the edible weeds that come with agriculture, and also edible ornamentals.” Bring the kids: They make fabulous foragers, says Meredith. “They learn superfast and it’s a way to pass cultural knowledge along and instill that food doesn’t come from a garden or a farm, but from photosynthesis and the Earth and the sun.”

Miami Hosts Largest CBD Expo in the U.S. Carolyn Hall, owner of David’s Gallery in Gulf Shores, attended the U.S.A. CBD Expo at the Miami Beach Convention Center last month. With more than 300 CBD, hemp and cannabis vendors and 13,500 attendees, some of the products being offered were CBD infused water, canned drinks, coffee, chocolate, gummies, food bars, pet products, flower and pre-rolls, vapes, shampoo, sunscreen, bath bombs, pain salves, moisturizers and sublingual tinctures. Workshops and discussions focused mostly on the business side of the hemp industry including topics such as market trends, health benefits, legality and medicinal use. According to Hall, representatives from various labs that provide third party testing mentioned that soon a quality report QR code may be printed on all products to link to lab tests that ensure all hemp-derived products have legal amounts of THC (0.3 percent or less). Try Maqui Berry for Dry Eyes Maqui, tiny black berries that grow wild in the rain forests of Chile and Argentina, are beloved by small birds. Now they are showing promise for computer-weary humans with dry eyes. In a recent study, Japanese researchers tested a standardized maqui berry extract on 74 people that suffered from dry eyes and eye fatigue that used computers, smartphones or video games for more than four hours a day. Half took 60 milligrams of the maqui berry extract and half took a placebo for four weeks. The maqui berry group showed significantly greater production of lacrimal fluid in both eyes compared to the placebo group, and also reported less eye fatigue and more relaxed shoulders.

Eat Plants to Live Longer At least one-third of early deaths could be prevented if people moved to a largely plant-based diet, prominent scientists from Harvard University Medical School have calculated. An international initiative, “Food in the Anthropocene,” published in the medical journal The Lancet, linked plant-based diets not only to improved health worldwide, but also to global sustainability. The report advocates a diet high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and nuts, and low in red meat, sugar and refined grains. “Unhealthy diets pose a greater risk to morbidity and mortality than does unsafe sex, and alcohol, drug and tobacco use combined,” it concludes.

Savor Cherries to Lower Metabolic Syndrome Risk Montmorency tart cherries, first discovered by Roman legionnaires along the Black Sea, have been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, according to scientists. Now a study from the UK’s University of Hertfordshire published in the Journal of Functional Foods has found that the cherries can mitigate factors that lead to metabolic syndrome, a condition that increases the risk of stroke, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Just two hours after being given cherries in the form of juice or capsules, subjects showed significantly decreased systolic blood pressure, and insulin levels were significantly lower after one and three hours compared to those given a placebo.

From Pills to Plants How CannaBama is Changing Lives by Bexley McLennan
J
ennifer Boozer is constantly asking herself, “How can CBD help this situation?” As the owner of CannaBama, it’s evident that she is on a mission to introduce everyone to the powers of this medicinal plant, whether they’re suffering from pain, insomnia, disease, addiction or they’re perfectly healthy. “It changed my whole life,” she says. “One capsule full of raw hemp oil paste changed my life.” Before she heard of CBD, Boozer had a near death experience with the birth of her second son, Elijah, who lived for only five days. Her body was permanently damaged, requiring several surgeries over a 14-year span. The physical complications coupled with the grief and anger were crippling, and Boozer began self-medicating with pain pills. “Pills took the pain away, but emotionally I was a zombie and 10 years later I had no connection to my friends and family,” she recalls. When Boozer got clean, the recovery process took several years. “I had suffered from chronic pain and migraines since I was 15 and I had insomnia since Elijah died, but I couldn’t take any medication at that point because I was in recovery,” she says. Eventually a friend told her about cannabidiol (CBD), which is derived from hemp. It’s non-psychoactive and promotes self-healing within the body. “It seemed an awful lot like weed, which I didn’t think was an option for someone in recovery, and it was expensive because it was 34

hard to find at the time,” Boozer says. “So I initially wrote it off thinking it sounds nice to try, but here are all these reasons I’m not going to. I was ignorant just like everybody else.” After hearing accounts of how CBD resolved autoimmune issues and triggered immense physical improvements in others, Boozer was ready to give it a try for herself. She had just had her third surgery since Elijah’s birth and while she was able to take pain medication without relapse, she struggled with the lingering pain and onset of withdrawal symptoms when she finished her prescription. “I was in misery at that point,” she recalls. Within 40 minutes of taking her first dose of CBD, Boozer wanted to know why no one knew about this miraculous medicine. “Eighty percent of the pain was gone and my withdrawal symptoms stopped—all of it, and never came back.” She also slept for the first time in 14 years. After a month her hair was thicker, her nails were stronger and she stopped taking migraine medicine. She says, “I had two to five migraines a week since I was 15 and now I don’t even think about them. That alone was life-changing.” At that point CBD was mostly available through multilevel marketing companies and Boozer wanted to get involved. When she saw that the industry was up against a stigma, lack of education and misinformation, she started envisioning a retail space. “I had this burning passion in me to help people understand. You couldn’t just pitch CBD to people online. I wanted a place that you could go if you have two questions or 200 questions and the person standing in front of you has all the answers you need,” she says. CannaBama is that place. Starting out with just 200 square feet of retail space in the corner of former partner Pam Davis’ salon in Satsuma, Alabama, CannaBama quickly evolved into a busy business in downtown Mobile that now sees more than 300 people a day. In their beautifully refurbished building, they stock over 100 CBD products—both full spectrum and isolate (THC-free)—including oral supplements, topical products, pure CBD vape options, edibles, water, lotions, bath bombs and pet products. Education has always been paramount to CannaBama’s mission and Boozer has
Plant Medicine Section sponsored by CannaBama
been leading free classes since she started the business. She also hosts Sweet Home CannaBama, a weekly radio show on FM Talk 106.5. “It’s so much more than explaining what it is; you need to explain what it does and you have to know how it works. And you can know everything there is to know about it but if you don’t know how to use it, you’re not going to have a good experience,” says Boozer, who notes that ineffective dosage is often the reason someone doesn’t initially get good results. She knows that the price of CBD can be daunting so she prices her inventory below the industry average. She also donates products to a women’s addiction recovery program and others in need. “I don’t need the money more than they need the products,” says Boozer. “What are we doing it for if we can’t give it away to the people who need it most?” Despite the rapid growth her business has experienced, she still has moments where she wonders whether Alabama is ready for her vision. 2019 has been one of the greatest years of her life, but it’s also been one of the hardest. Luckily her optimism prevails. “We haven’t even scratched the surface,” she says. “Now I’m really about to spread my wings.” For more information, see ad, page 31.
