Azima 1 & 2 are the latest Nagel series tugs to join the growing Suez Canal fleet.

Developed by the Timsah-Mapso-Lomocean team and built in Egypt, the Nagel 1807s consume only 46 litres of diesel per hour at the canal transit speed of 8kn, and do so with a wheelhouse noise level of just 72dB. The tugs’ maximum speed is 11.4 knots with 13 tonnes bollard pull in this twin 500hp configuration. More powerful versions providing up to 18 tonnes of bollard pull are in progress.

$100 MILLION ZERO EMISSION VESSEL FLEET FOR 2030 Could ambitious new vessel designs be the key in reversing the decline in numbers of European young people wanting to work offshore?

British marine operator Attollo has unveiled remarkable designs for a $100 million zero emissions autonomous hydrogen vessel fleet fitted with ultramodern technology and crew facilities.

The concepts are part of a multi-generational Research & Development mission known as ‘Project Zero’ - with the vessels named after the three pillars of the project: Hope, Destiny and Progress.

Dedicated to deploying future technology to support the next generation of offshore marine projects, Project Zero’s autonomous ships utilise zero emission hydrogen fuel cells, benefitting from onboard renewable power generation (solar and wind power) and built-in state-of-the-art technology from computer vision to AI. All three vessels - United Hope, United Destiny and United Progress - are designed for optimum working conditions, ensuring staff remain healthy, happy, and productive whilst on board.

Smart, ergonomic environments minimise noise and vibrations, with personalised cabin settings allowing crew to tweak light, sound and temperature to get a good night’s sleep, reduce fatigue and enhance performance while offshore.

Staff can also take advantage of incredible facilities including a high-tech gym with virtual classes, yoga studios and saunas, a cinema, a games room and an atrium for socialising and optimising natural light.

Additional features include advanced sensors, 3D printing capability and hydroponics to

increase the vessels ability to operate independently with drones replacing helicopters to ensure safe transit between assets.

Attollo’s vessel design has been funded with help of government support and assistance from V&A Dundee ‘Design Accelerator’ for low carbon technologies.

CENEX transport consultancy conducted vital research into the zero-emissions propulsion technologies. Vessels are set to hit waters by 2030.

Paul Sadler awarded IMO Maritime Prize 2020 Paul Sadler, former representative of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and prior to that representative of the UK government to the IMO, has been awarded the prestigious International Maritime Prize for 2020.

The award, a sculpture of a dolphin, was presented at the annual IMO Awards Ceremony held on 6 December in London, and was in recognition of Mr Sadler’s contribution to the work and objectives of the IMO and exceptional bravery at sea. Mr Sadler was nominated by IACS and the UK government.

“The International Maritime Prize was first presented in 1981 and, since then, we have seen a succession of highly distinguished

people receive the award, from across the world,” said IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim. “The recipient of the 2020 International Maritime Prize is someone who has spent many days here in the IMO corridors and has dedicated his entire career to shipping safety and the maritime industry.”

Mr Sadler has had an illustrious maritime career, serving as a

surveyor for the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, representing the UK, then later IACS at IMO meetings and acting as a governor of the World Maritime University.

He has delivered lectures to students and maritime industry organisations in the UK and overseas on the IMO and the roles of classification societies and recognised organisations. In 2017 he was awarded with a Distinguished Public Service Award by the US Coast Guard.

On receiving the award, Mr Sadler said, “I firmly believe I am only receiving this award because of all the talented, inspiring and dedicated people I had the good fortune of working with, not just in the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency and IACS, but also here at the IMO.”

FRENCH SHIPBUILDER’S ROMANIAN EXPANSION

French shipbuilder Piriou has purchased former Romanian subcontractor ATG, establishing Piriou ATG Romania as a 100% group subsidiary ATG shipyard is located in Giurgiu, 60km south of BucarestRomania. Initially exclusively dedicated to building vessels for inland waterway shipping, ATG has gradually broadened its scope in building hulls and vessels for the offshore cargo transport, harbour workboat and fishing industries.

Vincent Faujour, Piriou Group said: “We are very happy and proud to involve ATG shipyard and its 300 employees inside the Piriou group. This shipyard we have been working with as a subcontractor in the past years enjoys a very good local and international reputation. We will rely on the management team we have already reinforced and carry on with the development of the site which offers great potential.

In taking over ATG, the Piriou

group workforce increases to 1300 employees including 550 in France. Piriou is now established in Asia (Vietnam), Africa (Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal), in the Indian Ocean (La Réunion) and Europe (mainland France, Romania). Moreover, the group intends to continue expanding internationally.

Global Energy Group and partners are investing £110 million in building the UK’s largest offshore wind turbine manufacturing plant in the Port of Nigg, north of Inverness in Scotland. The announcement takes the annual total of new investment in UK offshore wind manufacturing facilities this year to over £1 billion – a new record. The facility will also create 400 new jobs and SSE Renewables has committed to placing orders with the factory for its pipeline of offshore wind projects. UK industry body RenewableUK has reacted positively to the news.

Jan De Nul Group will transport and install 41 wind turbines on behalf of Vattenfall Denmark at Vesterhav Nord & Syd’s offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea. For the installation of the 8.4 MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines Jan De Nul will use its jack-up installation vessel Vole au Vent. The contract also includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, procurement and delivery of the sea-fastening. “After the successful installation of 72 wind turbines for the 604 MW Kriegers Flak wind farm – the largest in Denmark – we are very pleased with the opportunity to build further on our experience together with Vattenfall,” commented Jan Van Impe, area manager offshore renewables, Jan De Nul Group. Bart Willems, head of commercial offshore wind of Jan De Nul Group said the company was proud to contribute to the energy transition in Europe.

“After the successful commissioning of other Danish wind farms this is another milestone for the production of green electricity for the Danish households,” he said.

Both offshore wind farms are located in the eastern part of the Danish North Sea. The Vesterhav Nord Offshore Wind Farm is based west of the coast of Vejlbi and the Vesterhav Syd Offshore Wind Farm is located close to the Sondervig coast. The two wind farms are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2023.

HYDROGEN PIPES NOT ELECTRICITY CABLES FOR OFFSHORE WIND Strohm, a manufacturer of fully bonded, Thermoplastic Composite Pipe has signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

The collaboration will focus on developing hydrogen transfer solutions that improve the decentralized green hydrogen concept, whereby green hydrogen is generated in each wind turbine generator and transported to shore by a subsea pipe infrastructure. In this concept power cables are replaced by a pipe infrastructure, storing and transferring hydrogen. Siemens Gamesa has a technical advisory role.

Strohm is the market leader in the design and manufacturing of TCP, which is particularly suited for carrying hydrogen offshore and subsea. Produced at its plant in The Netherlands, the corrosion-resistant technology does not fatigue or suffer from issues associated with using steel pipe for hydrogen, such as embrittlement. long spoolable lengths and flexible in nature, the pipe can be pulled directly into the wind turbine generator, quickly and cost effectively building an offshore wind farm infrastructure.

TCP does not require any maintenance and is suitable for over 30 years in operation,

lowering the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) to a minimum and enabling the decentralized concept solution.

Siemens Gamesa has already taken significant steps in shaping the industry and developing the basis for a decentralised offshore solution, that fully integrates a hydrogen electrolyser into an offshore wind turbine.

CRITICAL ACCESS TO SEA RISE DATA Critical data on sea level rise is now available courtesy of a unique European-American satellite ocean altimetry mission.

More precise information about global sea level than ever before is now available with the completion of 12 months of intensive, in-orbit testing of the Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite.

“The data released today is critical for monitoring the impact of climate change on Earth’s oceans,” said Julia Figa Saldana, EUMETSAT ocean altimetry programme manager.

“As the satellite ocean altimetry reference mission, it will continue the unbroken highprecision data record of sea level rise first started in 1992.

Ms Saldana said that by cross-calibrating Sentinel-6 against its predecessor Jason-3 to within 1mm, scientists can ensure that the 30-year long

record of global mean sea level, as captured by satellite radar altimeters, continues uninterrupted.

Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich is controlled from EUMETSAT’s Darmstadt headquarters, where its altimetry data is processed then disseminated to users of the data.

The satellite measures, every second, ocean height to within 3cm from an altitude of 1,336km above the Earth. This allows the global mean sea level to be determined with an accuracy of 1mm.

Lower accuracy, quick-release data from the Copernicus Sentinel-6 mission, released mid-year, are critical for weather forecasting purposes, for example, in models used to create seasonal forecasts or to forecast the development and track of hurricanes.

“Preparing for rising seas and

coastal hazards in a new climate starts with Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich,” said Dr Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich Program scientist and manager, NASA. “Information from this satellite will help us to deliver on COP26 commitments and inform our actions with accurate climate information.”

The partners in this cooperative mission are the European Commission, EUMETSAT, the European Space Agency, NASA and the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with support from the French Space Agency (CNES).

Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich was launched from California, in the United States, on 21 November 2020. It is the first of a new generation of oceanaltimetry satellites and will be followed into orbit by its twin, Sentinel-6B, in 2025.

THREE PASSENGER HOVERCRAFT DEAL Southampton-UK based hovercraft manufacturer Griffon Hoverwork is celebrating after landing one of its biggest ever deals The contract to supply three of Griffon’s latest 12000TD craft to Japan is worth more than £25 million.

The deal with the Oita Prefecture government will see the hovercraft providing a vital passenger service connecting Oita Airport in Kunisaki with Oita City, improving access and reintroducing a ferry route last used about 10 years ago.

Work on the first hovercraft will start at the end of January 2022, with the final craft set to be delivered to the customer before January 2024. The Griffon Hoverwork design team is working with the Japanese Government and Japanese suppliers to adapt the 12000TD’s design to local requirements.

The 23.7m long craft will carry approximately 80 people with a payload of 12 tonnes and top speed of 45 knots. It has proved to be a versatile and efficient passenger hovercraft, with the ability to transport high passenger numbers quickly and comfortably and has also been adapted to support critical NHS ambulance transfers.

The deal is the latest in a series of export wins secured by Griffon Hoverwork, which has a history of designing and building hovercraft in and around the Solent area that spans more than 60 years. Earlier this year the company delivered two of its new 995ED craft to clients in Hong Kong and Estonia.

The Hovertravel service uses the Griffon Hoverwork 12000TD between the Isle of Wight and mainland England, and is currently the only scheduled hovercraft passenger service in the world. Griffon’s deal with the Oita Prefecture government will establish this second service and thus represents an important step in the rebirth of this important marine technology.

V.Group secures wind turbine installation vessel management Global ship management company V.Group has been awarded a contract by Shanghai-based Boqiang Heavy Industry Group to project manage a newbuild wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV).

Under the contract, SeaTec, V.Group’s provider of technical services, will provide project management, plan approval and site supervision services. The next generation vessel is being built by CIMC Raffles and will be delivered in the first quarter of 2023.

Alessandro Ciocchi, Managing Director at SeaTec, said: “SeaTec will continue to play a strategic role in the energy

transformation, and we are therefore humbled by the selection to manage this energy efficient vessel with a range of climate-friendly features.”

The next generation model 3060-WTIV series vessel works in water depths of 65m and is designed to work in the North Sea and other European areas. It will be equipped with a fully electrical driven giant crane supplied by Husiman with a lifting capacity of 2200 tonnes and comes with a rack and pinion jacking system and DP2 system. It will be capable of installing turbines of up to 20MW. SeaTec is part of global ship management company V.Group which has 60 offices across the globe and access to an international pool of over 44,000 seafarers.

GIACOMO CASTOLDI Decarbonising propulsion Electrification and decarbonisation have slid firmly to the top of the commercial marine agenda in recent years. MJ spoke to Giacomo Castoldi to find out where jet propulsion slots into the rush to maximum efficiency.

“We’re very sensitive to this topic and although we cannot be as directly involved as an engine manufacturer in this important change process, we’ve prepared our waterjet drives with technical solutions specifically designed to accept and improve the coupling with electric and hybrid solutions.

In fact, we’re already performing these applications in the commercial market supplying not only the waterjet but also dedicated control systems.

From a technical point of view, we see that our integrated gearbox, with its numerous gear ratios, represents a unique advantage to match at best also these new propulsion units.”

In fact, Castoldi has pinned a lot to the concept of its integrated gearbox with “all the other unique features a consequence of it, such as the oil lubricated bearings, the impeller shaft protected within a housing full of oil, and the

advanced Clear-Duct unclogging system.”

From a technical point of view, the company believes that the most efficient integration of a marine transmission with an electric motor is only achievable with a multi ratio gearbox.

Castoldi is also well known as a manufacturer of tenders for the Superyacht industry, but at the beginning it really was a pioneer in this field. “We’ve always thought that the waterjet propulsion would have granted a lot of advantages in this field of application, for its safety, manoeuvrability and low under-keel exposure characteristics.

When we entered this market, 25 years ago, most of the tenders were equipped with stern drives or outboards and there were very few companies manufacturing waterjet driven tenders. On the contrary now most of the tenders are equipped with waterjet drives and this propulsion system is well known and appreciated by crew and owners. We believe we have played an important role in this trend change with our production also taken as an example by our competitors.”

role in the 20th (and 21st) century Italian engineering story would be a major understatement. Luigi Castoldi, Giacomo’s grandfather, founded the Castoldi company in the early 60s, revolutionising the marine waterjet propulsion system, arguably playing a critical role in taking it from the experimental ‘good idea’ to the reliable, efficient commercial systems in common use today.

Achille Castoldi, Giacomo’s great uncle, was five times powerboat world champion and world speed record holder in the 800kg class, and still unbeaten. Another great uncle, Mario, was the designer of the famous MacchiCastoldi airplanes of the second world war, still visible in some aeronautical museums in Italy.

But even with these big shoes to fill Giacomo gives the impression that the engineering achievements Castoldi needs to help realize in the next few years are even more important. “In these years I’ve learned a lot and gained experience but still there’s lot more to learn and do. Current times are fast moving and innovation to support decarbonisation is an area I am passionate about.”

LONDON WHARVES INVESTMENT The Port of London Authority is preparing its east London wharves for a return to operation Construction teams are busy preparing two east London wharves to return to operation in 2022 in a GBP£2.6 million programme of essential improvement works for the Port of London Authority (PLA).

One hundred steel piles, each 22.5 metres long and weighing five tonnes are being driven into the 200-metrelong quayside at the adjoining Plaistow and Royal Primrose wharfs in Newham, East London. The piles will provide a stable platform for a new concrete deck to be installed. ”These site works are the latest, essential stage in getting these wharfs back into use. By the end of next year, Plaistow and Royal Primrose wharves will, like Peruvian, be occupied by tenants and busy handling cargo,” said James Trimmer, PLA director of planning & environment.

“Together they form the riverside heart of a cluster of marine/industrial activity in East London, underpinning the low carbon movement of cargoes along the river, keeping lorries off the capital’s congested road network.”

INVESTMENT PLAN The construction arm of Plaistow Wharf tenant, Keltbray Environmental, is undertaking the site works. Keltbray is due to welcome the first cargo carrying barges to the site early in the New Year.

Peruvian Wharf, the first to return to operation, is home to Brett Group’s Capital Concrete operation. It was officially opened in 2019 by London’s deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, Jules Pipe CBE. The quayside deck slabs for Plaistow and Royal Primrose will be cast on site, using Capital Concrete from Peruvian Wharf. Work readying the site for cargo handling will include re-grading the riverbed alongside the wharf and installing berthing piles ready for ships to come alongside.

The PLA acquired three adjacent wharfs, Peruvian, Plaistow and Royal Primrose over the last five years as part of its investment plan, in order to bring them back into use for cargo handling. The PLA’s total investment in site acquisition and improvements readying them for operations is some GBP£20 million.

Sensor cuts turbines costs A new autonomous sensor will reduce cost of operations and maximise life of offshore wind turbines.

4Subsea’s Smart Monitoring Sensor (SMS) Strain measures the dynamic strain of offshore wind turbines with high resolution and accuracy.

NEW BRIDGE PROGRESSES AT GREAT YARMOUTH The Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing, being delivered by a BAM Farrans Joint Venture, is one of Norfolk’s most significant infrastructure projects in recent years.

Ipswich based Red7Marine, has been supporting the project since April, acting as the JV’s marine partner.

BAM Farrans began on site in January 2021, before beginning the overwater marine works and construction later in the year.

Once complete, the bridge will link the A47 at Harfrey’s roundabout to the port and the enterprise zone on the other side of the river, easing traffic congestion and improving journey reliability. The bridge also supports the county’s wider plans to maximise investment, regeneration, and economic growth opportunities in the area.

barge was mobilised to site in April to facilitate the marine works which involved the excavation of the quayside and installation of piles to form the foundations for the Western and Eastern Bascule pits. The barge has recently demobilised from the site, but construction will now continue with plans to have the bridge operational and open to traffic by early 2023.

The piles were driven from the Haven Seariser 3 with the use of a piling gate to successfully guide them into position. Jack-up barges are ideally suited to marine piling operations, providing stable level platforms when working in overwater conditions.

LOW POWER CONSUMPTION SMS Strain has extremely low power consumption, enabling continuous logging and data storage at 10Hz sampling frequency for a full 12 months.

SMS Strain sensors can be cabled to motion sensors like the SMS Gateway (topside) or SMS Motion (subsea) to provide fully synchronised strain and motion data. This gives a unique opportunity to assess structural loads in correlation with deflections and response frequencies which are critical parameters in wind turbine design.

Furthermore, the sensors are made as true IoT sensors where that given access to power and the internet, they will automatically start sending data to the cloud where the data is processed, and insight from the data can be visualised to the customers.

The SMS Strain is an autonomous, retrofittable sensor that can be installed without special requirements such as the use of specialised technicians, equipment, or a clean environment. In addition, the technology can easily be installed by hand on the turbine tower or using divers or ROV for subsea installation, for instance, on the substructure.

CORROSION PROTECTION FOR SUBMERGED CHAINS Initially intended for use in the Oil & Gas market, the sacrificial annode system is equally applicable to any mooring system on other offshore installations Imenco Corrosion Technology’s ‘Pacu’ product is designed to be attached to mooring chains. Comprised of ICT’s wellknown Piranha clamp and an integrated bracket-mounted sacrificial anode, the solution will dramatically extend the lifespan of mooring chains.

Currently the unpredictable rate of corrosion on existing mooring chains is widely accepted, with costly and time consuming replacements taking place but not solving the problem of a high turnover in the lifespan of chain and corrosion-related failure rates of mooring systems.

The product has undergone significant internal and external testing and with a move from qualification to commercialization, operators can now take advantage of the full ICT package, including computer modelling, testing, installation, and verification of the protection.

Prior to launch, ICT worked with a major international operator to complete a Technology Qualification Project with the objective of de-risking an anode retrofit solution for mooring chains. The project demonstrated that cathodic protection and the use of Pacu provided a viable solution for operators.

ICT’s Pacu is applicable to all geographical regions, but particularly in those locations where problems with rapid corrosion have been identified as being common.

The use of Pacu will reduce the risk of mooring system failures while providing a cost-effective solution, which can be easily retrofitted to existing chains. The cathodic protection of chains opens up the opportunity to reduce corrosion allowances, thereby enabling thinner chains to be used in new and replacement systems. This leads to less weight and therefore less equipment needed for handling, transportation, and installation, reducing the carbon footprint of operations.

Waste clearance on an industrial scale A specialist maintenance company has cleared 146.25 tonnes of waste from canals in London this year, allowing wildlife to thrive and providing clear waterways for boats.

Keeping British canals and rivers clear is an ongoing, major operation. It is estimated that over half a million pieces of plastic end up in the network every year, before getting washed out into the ocean – posing a danger to sea life.

In a bid to remove rubbish, The Rothen Group’s (TRG) state-of-the-art harvester is capable of collecting weed, plastic and waste in the water. This ensures that any items collected are not only split into

recyclable and non-recyclable materials, but are also removed from the passageway to protect wildlife and underwater organisms.

Charlotte Lea, an ecologist at TRG, said: “Our equipment helps to improve the

condition of canals via the removal of duck weed and waste, which poses a threat to biodiversity and presents a challenge to navigation. If weeds are left to flourish these can become a foot thick in places, creating blockages and preventing access to other areas, as well as causing damage to propellers.

“It’s important to remember that anywhere weeds can flourish or waste accumulates will require some form of maintenance, and continued warm summers along with plastic pollution makes this need more pressing.”

AUTONOMOUS DRONE AT WORK IN HAMBURG The Port of Hamburg is championing the first autonomous drone to be used for surveying waters in a bid to boost its technological capabilities Due to its shallow draft, the small and easily manoeuvrable Echo. 1 drone can collect data in areas where a larger vessel wouldn’t be able to reach. Equipped with an echo sounder, it can be used for a variety of purposes such as maintenance surveys and depth soundings.

Thomas Thies, head of hydrographic data acquisition at Hamburg Port Authority, said: “The Echo 1 is an unmanned surveying vehicle with a length of 1.60m and very low draft. It has lots of electronics onboard and the main component is the automatic navigation capability enabling it to travel set routes.”

Lots of systems can be mounted on top of the Echo 1, added Rike Verheyen. The echo sounder is attached to the underside of the drone, and a 3D scanner can be fixed on top of it. This means it can pass harbour walls and scan them in 3D while also measuring depth under it, she said.

UKHO welcomes Government report The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has welcomed the publication of the UK Government’s Foresight ‘Future of the Sea’ report, which outlines a number of recommendations to help the UK utilise its current expertise and technological strengths to foster trade links, build marine capacity across the world and collaborate to tackle climate change.

Among these strengths, the report recognises the UK as a global leader in hydrography and highlights the UKHO’s expertise in collecting and processing hydrographic and marine geospatial data.

Employing over 120 software engineers, solutions architects and data scientists, they manage a wide range of datasets for a variety of maritime applications, specializing in bathymetry, cartography, marine data science, law of the sea and more. All support the vision that science and innovation - and, in particular, marine geospatial data - can help the UK strengthen its position as a

TUGS DELIVERY AND ORDER ROUND-UP This month sees four tug deliveries and orders for a further six vessels of interest to report along with news of a new tug design from OSD-IMT Concarneau France-based Chantiers Piriou reports the upcoming delivery of the harbour tug Le Moros to Société Coopérative de Lamaneurs of Brest and Roscoff. Designed

by Piriou and built at its Vietnam shipyard the 16.5m, 15tbp tug was adapted to the client’s specific requirement including a new generation IMO Tier III compliant motor. A bow thruster is included in the vessel which has a crew of four. The client has managed mooring services in Brest and Roscoff for 50 and 10 years respectively, also carrying out coastal towing operations.

Damen describes its new diesel-electric hybrid, ultrashallow draught Shoalbuster 3514SD as ‘one of the largest and most sophisticated in its range’ and following previous news in this column of the first in this new marque, the naming ceremony for Herman Sr’s Brutus has taken place at Hardinxveld. With a length of 35m, beam 14m and 150m2 of deck space the vessel has a draught of just 2.45m (at 50% fuel capacity), partly down to the four main engine, four propeller arrangement delivering 3,876bkW in total and an impressive 60tbp. Accommodation on board Brutus comprises 12 cabins for six to seven crew plus 13 to 14 additional personnel and speaking of its connection with Damen, Herman Sr director Jack van Dodewaard said: “The Van Dodewaard family, as Herman Sr B.V., are still very happy with the good and long term cooperation with Damen Shipyards. For nearly 75 years, and across three generations, they have been our vessel supplier and we hope it will last for many more years.”

Final deliveries to report again involves Damen with naming of the Multi Cat 1506 and Multi Cat 1908 Neptune and Progress for Antwerp-based Brabo Group on the back of a contract for the company’s cleaning division to maintain a pollution-free environment in Antwerp. The hulls were already in stock which suited Brabo’s requirement for a speedy delivery and role-specific modifications included: a vacuum installation, oil booms, pump room high pressure units, hot water units, discharge pump and a grabber in the vessels’ cranes to collect larger elements. Neptune’s wheelhouse was raised to create space for the pump room, the cleaning equipment installed modularly allowing removal should the vessels take on different functions. Two extra gensets are also installed for additional power requirements. Selective catalytic reduction technology combined with a particulate filter reduces the vessels’ NOx reductions in line with Euro Stage V regulations.

Turning to orders of note, Grandweld Shipyard has agreed a contract with Specialities Construction of Kuwait for construction of four 27.5m, 50tbp tractor tugs. The escortrated Robert Allan Ltd TRAktor 2700-Z vessels will have firefighting and oil recovery capabilities and operate in Shuwaikh Port for Kuwait Port Authority. Grandweld employs advanced shipbuilding technology including a highly digitised workflow and detailed 3D production and this order extends the Middle East-based shipyard’s order book until the end of 2022.

Another order beyond Europe worth noting is US-based McAllister Towing’s deal with East Boothbay, Maine-based Washburn & Doughty (W&D) for two 28.3m, 84tbp tugs with options for a further two. They will be the third and fourth tugs built by W&D for McAllister and includes a Caterpillar/ Schottel main engine/thruster combination with Markey towing winches forward and aft and delivery scheduled for November 2022. Family-owned McAlister dates to 1864 and operates a fleet of over 60 tugs, barges, launches and ferries on the US East Coast from Portland, ME to San Juan PR. Finally, following news in April 2020 of the Cyclotrac 3690 a new tractor tug marque from OSD-IMT, the Netherlandsbased ship design company has unveiled another Voith propelled tractor tug design, designated the Cyclostern 2370. OSD-IMT state: “This strong tug is able to do the work of a larger vessel but for the price of a small one and it can squeeze into the tight corners of ports and locks.” The 23m, 70tbp Tier III compliant tug will be powered by two 2,525kW main engines powering Voith type 32 cycloidal thrusters with a 200t brake load double drum towing winch aft along with a 75t towing hook and accommodation for four persons.

SCHOTTEL ENHANCES SERVICE PROVISION IN CANADA Schottel’s US and Canadian arms have joined forces with two Canadian companies to enhance support provision for the increasing local fleet of Schottel-propelled vessels.

Thruster manufacturer Schottel is based in Germany but has a global presence providing and supporting its thruster portfolio for various types of vessels, particularly tugs for whom precise manoeuvring capabilities are essential. Tugs often have long lifespans and knowing that servicing, support and spares are available for the duration of its service are important considerations for customers.

The extension of Schottel’s provision in the region involves a cooperative agreement with the two Canadian West Coast companies to support local Schottel-equipped vessels. The agreement is with Seaspan Vancouver Drydock based in North Vancouver who will act as a service and support centre and Burnaby-based McRae Electric who will be electric and controls service provider.

Schottel’s Canadian presence dates to 2016 and the number of vessels with its propulsion systems in the Pacific Northwest has ‘increased enormously’ including tugs, ferries, fishing vessels and Coast Guard or naval vessels. The arrangement involves either or both Seaspan and McRae providing ‘local and even faster professional support’ and with the

aforementioned in mind Schottel’s aim is to provide a holistic approach towards keeping a propulsion package performing well over the long term. This includes commissioning technical support, service packages in emergencies and preventative maintenance to production of spare parts for older propulsion units. In addition, tailor-made training courses enable customers to solve any common problems that may arise.

Corvus Energy has revealed that its order for batteries for three zero-emission tugs under construction at Sanmar Shipyards will be its 500th project order.

It is not so many years ago that reporting details of new tug constructions involved largely conventional mechanical components, engines, gearboxes, thrusters etc. The attraction of alternative fuel variants such as hybrid is gathering pace however with other component technology providers now an

essential part of the supply chain and attracting rightful attention.

Norway based-Corvus Energy describes itself as ‘a pioneer of lithium-ion battery technology in maritime applications’ so perhaps unsurprising that it is involved in the tug and workboat world given its presence in many other areas of maritime operations from cruise and ferry to fishing, ports and subsea, a sector it entered in 2019.

The 500th reference and one of the largest in Corvus’ history is for the supply of 5,288kWh batteries for each of three zero-emission Robert Allan Ltd-designed ElectRA 2800 tugs currently under construction for Canada’s HaiSea Marine at Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards.

HaiSea Marine is majority owned by Haisla Nation in partnership with Seaspan ULC and will operate the three battery-powered tugs assisting LNG carriers at the LNG Canada export terminal in Kitimat BC. Sanmar’s order also includes two RAstar 4000 dual fuel escort tugs which will use LNG as their primary fuel.

Corvus Energy puts its success down to the ‘engaged support’ of its strategic investors, Equinor Ventures, Norsk Hydro, BW Group and Shell Ventures and in a sign that the involvement of energy storage systems and fuel cell technology in future tug designs is here to stay, in recent months Corvus signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sanmar aimed at developing a new range of zeroemission and hybrid tugs based on Robert Allan designs.

Remarking on its contribution to environmental standards and remembering its involvement in several maritime sectors, Geir Bjørkeli Corvus Energy CEO says: “We estimate that our batteries have saved over three hundred million litres of diesel, avoiding almost one billion kilograms of CO2 emissions, that’s a track record in which we take immense pride. Soon, in combination with the maritime fuel cell that Corvus is developing in partnership with Toyota, our energy storage systems will help replace fossil fuels and GHG emissions on ocean-going ships as well.

ABS is involved in cutting-edge projects all over the world designed to advance the application of remote and autonomous functions on vessels and we are proud to play a role in supporting the safe development of this technology at sea.”

The guide covers marine vessels and offshore units including tugs and details the difference between autonomous and remote control where the former involves the performing of four steps in the operational decision loop: monitoring, analysis, decision and action without human intervention. Such functions do not follow predefined routines and operational scenarios but rather have the ability to execute the most appropriate actions based on their programming, assigned mission and tasks, operational environment and system status. Remote control functions involve the operation being monitored remotely and controlled by a human operator in a location other than on board the vessel itself.

The guide provides the industry with technical and survey requirements to be eligible for class notations AUTONOMOUS and REMOTE-CON. It goes into details of a risk-based approach, the framework also considering interactions between autonomous and remote-control functions with relevant stakeholders including port authorities and other vessels. It is aimed at a range of parties involved in such projects including owners; designers; shipyards; equipment and system manufacturers; integrators and regulators.

Autonomous functions do not imply unmanned operation but considers other activities including system maintenance, incidence handling and manning requirements.

The importance of automation vs autonomous functions is covered based on the human-system level of interaction in the processes of data handling, decision making and execution. Ten function categories are listed to be selected for the notation including navigation, manoeuvring, mooring

Supervision of the functions is covered in detail dependant on the operator being located on board the vessel or remotely along with attention level; continuous, periodic and ‘as needed’. As certain aspects may not be in full compliance with existing flag and port state regulations ABS stresses the ‘necessary and crucial’ requirement for engagement with these bodies.

An extensive list of required documents is included along with highlighting a greater focus on data integrity and cybersecurity for which ABS offers a full suite of optional notations. The implementation process for new construction or retrofit is detailed involving concept, design, engineering, validation, deployment and O&M phases. The concept of vessel operations is obviously important and examined along with risk categorisation, assessment and details of autonomous and remote-control functions.

Installation, testing and commissioning surveys before and after construction are other areas covered in ABS’s guide with appendixes exploring high level goals, list of major hazards and, outside the scope of this brief look, offshore oil and gas production system operation.

TUGS & TOWING Rotterdam-based towage provider Kotug has strengthened its shiphandling operation at Port Hedland, Australia with the arrival of two new ART80-32 Rotortugs.

The new vessels have been deployed on a long-term charter as part of the operation with mining group BHP to support bulk carriers loading at Port Hedland, Western Australia and will bring the number of Kotug Rotortugs operating at the port to eight. Rotortugs are distinctive in their adoption of three azimuth thrusters in an isosceles triangle configuration comprising two side by side forward and one on the centreline aft.

Robert Allan Ltd has an exclusive designer agreement with Rotortug (the shipbuilding and trading arm of Kotug) with the two new vessel bearing the names RT Clerke and RT Imperieuse built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard in southern China. The names are derived from Clerke Reef and Imperieuse Reef, two of the three reefs that form coral atolls in the Rowley Shoals Marine Park, 300km west of Broome.

Rotortugs are offered in a variety of sizes and power outputs from the 15m, 10tbp training Rotortug RT Borkum to the 46m, 100tbp ART100-46 variant. The ART80-32 is powered by three Caterpillar main engines with a total output of 5,295kW and bollard pull

The scale of the shiphandling operation at Port Hedland of which Kotug is just one provider is illustrated by the figures of 15 berths handling ships up to 320,000dwt with in 2020, 280 million tons of iron ore being produced by BHP. TUGS & TOWING Resolve Marine has been involved in a diverse range of salvage activities including removal of heavy fuel oil from a ship that sunk over 50 years ago.

In times gone by the long-term implications for the environment from pollutants, both cargo and bunkers contained in ships that sank in deep water and subsequently abandoned did not carry the gravitas of today.

As these wrecks slowly degrade and with the passage of time salvors are finding their expertise called upon when such pollutants are eventually liberated into the ocean.

In 1968 the 147m long cargo vessel Schiedyk sank in 122m of water after hitting a submerged ledge near Bligh Island, Canada. Recent oil sheens in the area were identified as from the vessel and Resolve was called in to remove the fuel oil using its patented ROV-operated ‘hot tap’ machine. The operation was completed on schedule without any pollution.

The US-based salvor faced a different conundrum when tasked to assist after a bauxite unloader collapsed onto a bulk carrier in Port of Vila do Conode, Brazil. A 360t counterweight suspended precariously 30m above the quay presented ‘an extremely unstable situation’ and Resolve was required to stabilise the unloader and disassemble the

various components. Custom lifting arrangements were engineered and two Spliethof/BigLift heavylift vessels provided temporary stability and assisted in disassembling the unloader and stabilising the elevator in the bulk carrier’s hold. With support from shore cranes the unloader was redelivered to its owners in a stable condition.

Working under OPA-90 SMFF contracts and

as named responder, Resolve deployed its firefighting equipment package to assist Tacoma Fire Department tackle a fire in an unmanned fish processing vessel at a Tacoma, Washington shipyard. Using water and an environmentally inert chemical fire suppressant the fire was extinguished after two days, work for Resolve including the removal of all hazardous material.

8 The Icelandic Coast Guard’s emergency response fleet has been enhanced with the addition of a powerful anchor handling tug supply vessel previously employed in the offshore oil industry.

Freyja arrived in Iceland recently from Rotterdam where it was converted from the AHTS GH Endurance. KEY FRENCH FLOATING WIND ACQUISITION French renewables key player BW Ideol has signed an agreement to acquire a 5% ownership in the 30MW EolMed floating wind pilot project in the French Mediterranean This investment confirms the company’s dual-track growth strategy as co-developer of floating wind projects and as floating foundation EPCI provider.

BW Ideol and Qair have been cooperating on the project since 2016 and the early development stages when the French government awarded the project on the merits of BW Ideol’s floating wind technology. Since, in 2020, TotalEnergies Renewables acquired a 20% ownership in the project.

EolMed is one of the first floating wind projects in the Mediterranean and is composed of three 10 MW Vestas wind turbines, currently one of the most powerful offshore wind turbines in operation in the market. The project will be installed 15 km off Gruissan, France.

Scottish tech harvesting Indonesia’s tidal resources UK tidal energy developer Nova Innovation has won funding that could deliver the first ever tidal turbine array in Indonesia.

Funding body Innovate UK has awarded £200k to Nova’s FLITE (Feasibility of Larantuka and Indonesian Tidal Energy) project that will deliver a feasibility study for a 7MW tidal array in Larantuka Strait.

Larantuka Strait lies between the islands of Flores and Adonara and has one of the strongest tidal currents in Indonesia. The array would utilise Nova’s next generation 100kW tidal turbines – innovative, worldleading technology that has been powering homes and businesses in Shetland since

BLADE RECYCLING FIRST A UK£2m three-year project to develop wind turbine blade recycling in Britain for the first time has been given the go-ahead after winning a UK Government grant.

This project is set up to commercialise a revolutionary method developed by the University of Strathclyde to separate the glass-fibre and resin components in composites and recover the glassfibre component which can then be reprocessed, moulded, and reused in other industries.

The pilot will now get underway to develop a commercially viable solution, overseen by a consortium led by Aker Offshore Wind, and including trade body Composites UK, and researchers at the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Composites Group and Lightweight Manufacturing Centre, which is a part of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland Group.

Malcolm Forsyth, sustainability manager at Composites UK and overall project leader, said: “This project is a vital step towards establishing a commercial recycling route for composite materials in the UK and beyond, covering both wind turbine blades and several other applications in the construction and transport sectors.

polymer resin systems, have a huge role to play in enabling the UK economy to transition to net zero and we need effective recycling at end of life to ensure that composite materials achieve high levels of circularity in future.”

GB£1.3m FROM INNOVATE UK Innovate UK, the UK Government’s innovation agency, has awarded GB£1.3m to the project, with Aker Offshore Wind contributing more than £500,000.

The project aims to make recycling of composite parts the norm and ensure the wind industry is a driving force for a new circular economy.

Aker Offshore Wind has pledged its support to trade body WindEurope’s call for a Europe-wide landfill ban on decommissioned wind turbine blades by 2025.

The Caribbean island nation of Bermuda has taken the bold step of developing the world’s first utility-scale commercial ocean wave power park.

With a 40MW capacity, the park will fuel the island’s grid, providing roughly 10% of Bermuda’s energy needs.

The technology that will drive the development is from Seabased, an Ireland headquartered company commercialising technologies invented by professors Mats Leijon and Hans Bernhoff, internationally recognized electrical engineers who developed it initially at Uppsala University in Sweden.

ATTRACTING NEW FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND INVESTMENT A vision has been unveiled by Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore Wind of a new manufacturing base in Scotland for their predicted ‘floating offshore wind revolution’

8 Ambitious plans for a floating wind manufacturing base

The immersive virtual reality design has been developed in conjunction with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland at the University of Strathclyde as part of the early investment process required to develop the major new industry that will create thousands of local jobs.

An engagement event has been recently held at the university with a range of international fabricators with an active interest in Scottish developments which would consider setting up in the country.

The approach taken ensures that international representatives will have time to design and prepare the base in time for bidding for work.

With the first steps in the journey of setting up a facility in Scotland underway, Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore Wind can move at speed to support the development of the Scottish supply chain because the companies have already identified which technology – the ‘WindFloat’ – they plan to use at floating offshore wind sites.

The companies are the majority owners of Principle Power Inc, which has developed the ‘WindFloat’ steel-based floating platforms - the world’s most proven floating offshore wind technology - to harness this energy.

SHARING THE MODEL The model will be shared globally with fabricators looking to establish and choose the location of an internationally costcompetitive site in Scotland for the fabrication and assembly of floating platforms. And it will also be used locally with the Scottish and UK supply chain which stands to benefit from the creation of new jobs and opportunities.

As part of the current ScotWind leasing round, Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore Wind have submitted floating offshore bids across several sites in the Outer Moray Firth that, combined, could generate 6GW of energy.

JOBS As detailed in the partners’ supply chain manifesto, more than 5,000 jobs would be created through direct work and supply chain opportunities for each site, along with around 200 apprenticeships.

With an established ScotWind design and the expertise of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore Wind can move earlier to start the floating offshore wind revolution.

This in turn enables early engagement with fabricators to help them get ready for the ScotWind roll-out and shape the design of the plant based on their fabrication delivery capability.

GREEN INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Around 80 per cent of the world’s wind resources are in waters deeper than 60 metres and are unsuitable for fixed foundations.

Floating offshore wind has become the latest advent in renewable energy technology and is set to deliver a green industrial revolution for Scotland with a ‘just transition’ from the oil and gas industry.

Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore Wind have made a commitment to 40 per cent minimum supply chain content in Scotland as part of a 60 per cent commitment from the UK, with early enabling investment of tens of millions of pounds in building supply chain capability within the first four years of winning a site.

“We are in the business of turning vision into reality,” said Dan Finch, managing director of Ocean Winds UK. “The first step is to identify the vision. In the Moray Firth our vision was high-volume, low cost, low carbon power in water depths of 50m and more. We made that vision a reality.

“Now we want to take our turbines out of the Firth into the deep waters of the North Sea.”

The first lot of submarine power cables for TenneT’s Hollandse Kust (noord and west Alpha) wind farms in the Netherlands have now been manufactured.

LS Cable & System, a consortium partner of Jan De Nul Group, produced the cables. Jan De Nul’s cable laying vessel Isaac Newton will load the 220 kV AC cables from LS Cable’s factory in Donghae, South Korea, and transport them to the project for installation in April 2022.

Jeroen Devos, project manager at Jan De Nul Group, said: “The successful delivery of the first 90 km of cables is the first major milestone for our project. We look forward to installing these cables in Q2 2022 by means of our custom-built tracked vertical injector Moonfish and our offshore installation vessels Isaac Newton and Adhémar de Saint-Venant.”

This first lot consists of the complete cables for Hollandse Kust (noord) (HKn) and the nearshore section for the Hollandse Kust (west Alpha) (HKwA). In total, this is more than 90km of cables, weighing 7,160t and having very large cross sections resulting in an overall cable diameter of more than 25cm.

INSTALLATION AWARDED AT HOLLANDSE KUST NOORD Dutch marine contractor Van Oord just announced the installation contract for the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore windfarm Cadeler A/S, a key supplier of marine installation and engineering services in the offshore wind industry, has been chosen as partner by Van Oord to assist in executing yet another wind farm project off the coast of the Netherlands.

The Hollandse Kust Noord project consisting of 69 11MW turbines, is scheduled for completion in 2023.

Cadeler A/S will once again be partnering with Van Oord this time for an installation project at the Hollandse Kust Noord Wind Farm Site, developed and operated by CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco.

The wind farm is located approximately 18km off the west coast of the Netherlands, close to the town of Egmond aan Zee. Cadeler is set to assist with transporting and installing part of the planned 69 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 11MW. Upon completion, the capacity of the wind farm will reach an impressive 759MW, generating at least 3.3TWh per year, which covers the demand for more than 1 million Dutch households or equals to 2.8% of the Dutch electricity demand.

Last year, Cadeler announced another contract set to be executed in 2022-2023 off the Dutch coast, at the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm. This project consists of 140 of the same 11MW Siemens-Gamesa turbines that are also due to be installed at the Hollandse Kust Noord windfarm project.

The learnings gathered during the installation process connected to the Hollandse Kust Zuid project in particular as well as the extensive knowhow that Cadeler generally has to offer represent the main reasons for why Van Oord has chosen to enter a partnership with Cadeler.

This project comes at an opportune time, as it will take place right after the completion of the Hollandse Kust Zuid project and before the replacement of the main crane on Wind Osprey.

Digital twin wind perks Digital twin technology helps reduce operational failures at offshore wind farms.

The partners of the EU ‘Digitalisation of Critical Components in Offshore Wind Turbines’ (DOCC-OFF) project held an industrial workshop on digital twin technology applied to offshore wind turbines in Belgium. The project is funded by the EU’s European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, led by the Basque Energy Cluster Association, in which HINE, XABET and SIRRIS-OWl Lab has also participated.

“During the workshop, the main outcome of the project was presented: the digital platform to process data from the hydraulic pitch system of a wind turbine, which enables failures in this system to be reduced

at offshore wind farms,” reported the Basque Energy Cluster.

Aritz Zubizarreta (HINE), as the developer of the hydraulic pitch system, gave an overview of the results and conclusions drawn from the Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), whilst Iker Elorza

(IKERLAN), detailed the results obtained from the simulations and tests performed on a laboratory scale.

Zuriñe Varela (XABET), in charge of the development of the digital platform, gave a live demonstration of the tool, which is capable of detecting possible failures that may arise in the future, displaying the findings to the customer in an easy and visual way.

The platform can also show the evolution of the health of the system at different time intervals, and in this respect, statistical modelling and data analysis have proven to be useful for the detection of potential problems in the hydraulic pitch system.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES TO FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND A new report analyses the technical opportunities and challenges for the floating offshore wind sector to overcome, as it moves towards commercial scale farms The findings are the result of the latest work undertaken by the Floating Wind Joint Industry Project (JIP), the world-leading collaborative floating wind research and development programme managed by the Carbon Trust in the UK. According to the report, despite Covid-19 related delays the global floating offshore wind industry is expected to grow from 74MW at the time of this release to 126MW by the end of 2021 with the completion of the largest floating offshore wind farm to-date at Kincardine, Scotland.

Many countries are considering floating wind, as it opens up new areas with high-wind resources that are not suitable for bottom-fixed installations, such as very deep waters.

However, as outlined in the report, the industry has certain inherent challenges that need to be addressed in order to maximise the efficiency of commercial-scale floating offshore wind farms. These include: 4 Heavy lift maintenance: commercial floating offshore wind farms are likely to be installed in deeper waters, where conventional jack-up vessels will not be a viable option. On top of this, the relative motion of the turbine versus a floating maintenance vessel is a key risk that needs to be mitigated.

4 Tow-to-port: better solutions to safely disconnect and store all the connections when bringing the turbine back to port were researched, providing recommendations depending on the turbine platform design and the distance to port.

4 Mooring in challenging environments: both very deep and very shallow waters come with inherent challenges for anchoring floating offshore wind platforms, from selecting the most cost-efficient mooring system, to mitigating the strong dynamic motions of waves experienced in shallower waters.

The Phase-III Summary report outlines these challenges and summarises the solutions that have emerged as part of the projects delivered within Phase-III and a technological competition managed by the Carbon Trust and the Floating Wind JIP. The findings come at a time that the floating offshore wind sector is ready to scale up, and industry participation in the Floating Wind JIP is also increasing as bp and Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. have recently joined the programme alongside the 15 existing members: EDF Renouvelables, EnBW, Equinor, Kyuden Mirai Energy, Ocean Winds, Ørsted, Parkwind, RWE, ScottishPower Renewables, Shell, SSE Renewables, TEPCO, TotalEnergies, Vattenfall, and Wpd. Aleida Rios, Senior Vice President Engineering, bp commented: “bp has always seen the benefit of partnership and collaboration, both in terms of technological advancement and delivering solutions at scale. In becoming a member of the Carbon Trust’s Floating Wind JIP, we look forward to contributing and furthering the advancement of floating offshore wind solutions, as we continue to grow our renewables portfolio.”

42m VESSEL ARRIVES AS DECK CARGO A Damen SPa 4207, the second vessel in an order of four Damen vessels for the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard, has been officially handed over in Kingston, Jamaica Construction on the vessel had already begun when the global pandemic struck and the rapid spread of the virus meant that upon completion of the vessel, pandemic travel restrictions made it unfeasible to arrange a crew to deliver her on own keel since the crew would not be permitted to return to their home countries once they arrived in Jamaica.

Not to be deterred, the Damen Services vessel delivery teams worked to devise an alternative arrangement. The vessel left Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, not on her own keel as is usual for this model, but on board the BBC Congo, a heavy transport vessel.

COVID measures prevented Damen’s heavy lift team from being present to supervise her loading, but a local team was called upon to ensure the vessel was carefully loaded and properly secured. Once final checks had been made, the BBC Congo, and her precious cargo, sailed East across the South Pacific and through the Panama Canal, before arriving, just

under two months later, in Kingston, Jamaica. On the morning of her arrival, the JDF’s new vessel was offloaded and, with a support fleet of smaller craft, was delivered to its base nearby.

Due to changes in travel restrictions, Rimmert Berlijn, Service Coordinator, Delivery, Damen Heavy Lift, was able to safely travel to Jamaica to coordinate the logistics and supervise the offload. Mr. Berlijn stated: “The successful delivery of this vessel really came down to teamwork, collaboration, and everybody’s willingness to be flexible in finding solutions to the challenges of these times.” He continued: “It is always nice working with the JDF, and we are proud to continue our partnership with them”.

The four-vessel contract between Damen and the JDF saw the delivery of a FCS 5009 Patrol in 2020. Another SPa 4207 and a second FCS 5009 Patrol will be delivered in the years to come.

Aquaculture workboat Macduff Ship Design recently celebrated the delivery of the Aquaculture, Thermolicing Vessel MV Kallista Helen.

The first of its type to be designed and built-in Scotland. The vessel, completed by Fergusons Marine Engineering, is the fifth to enter service for Inverlussa that has been built to plans from Macduff Ship Design, compounding a long working relationship culminating in the most innovative design delivered to Inverlussa yet.

The systems and machinery onboard have a high peak electrical load, resulting in a large engine room that spans over half the length of the hull. Propulsion is derived from 2 x Cat C32 main engines delivering a total power of 1300hp, the engines are paired with

two ZF W1800 reverse reduction gearboxes.

The shafts are connected to twin fixed pitched 1500mm propellors which are combined with low drag nozzles, supplied by Kort propulsion, to improve free running

speed whilst maintaining a bollard pull of 15 tonnes. The vessel is also fitted with high lift rudders by Wills Ridley and a 250 Kw hydraulic bow thruster by Kort Propulsion which ensures the excellent manoeuvrability required when working in and around the salmon farm. Two Cat C32 generators are also installed, providing 860kW each. Smaller Cat C4.4 auxiliary engines are also used to power ships systems when the main generators are not in use.

With the ability to carry over 56m3 of fuel and over 40m3 of freshwater, the vessel has the ability to stay at sea for an extended period.

With 44,180 kilowatts, the Spartacus is the most powerful CSD in the DEME fleet, and the strongest cutter suction dredger in the world, capable of handling even the most challenging rocky bottom formations.

The heavy cutter ladder, able to be controlled and operated from the bridge by a single person, can operate up to a dredging depth of 45m. The ship also has a waste heat recovery system that converts heat from the exhaust gases into electrical energy.

CSD Spartacus will set sail to its first assignment, the Abu Qir project in Egypt. This vast greenfield project includes the reclamation of 1,000 hectares of new land, the deepening of the port’s approach channel to 23m and the dredging of a turning basin to 22m.

RIGHT-SIZED VESSEL FOR MARINE RENEWABLES DUTIES A UK-based marine renewables business believes it has found a niche for a new class of multi-purpose vessel that bridges the gap between inshore multicats and deep sea OSVs Inyanga Marine projects, based in Penryn, Falmouth has received equity and debt facilities of £2.25m from corporate and private investors, backed by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fund (managed by FSE), Cyan Finance, Lombard and private and corporate equity investors.

The game changer is a reconfigured 58m, 1500dwt DP2 platform supply vessel which Inyanga MD Richard Parkinson discovered after searching for useful marine construction vessels at an agreeable price. Most OCVs and OSVs proved too big for his requirements while multicats were too small to fulfill all the functions he requires. He was looking for a vessel that was something in between those classes. Richard is a mariner and ex-captain of anchor handling tugs who has been based in several African countries and the vessel was found in Limbe, Cameroon where it was stacked for four years along with several others of the Bourbon fleet. As the ‘mother ship’ this Liberty class vessel was kept in warm layup meaning there was less work involved in reactivating it.

five thrusters and enough deck space for cable spread and ROV spread. The ship is currently being prepared to sail to the UK where the deck will be strengthened and fitted with a prefabricated mezzanine deck; a heave compensated A-frame with intelligent Launch and Recovery System (eliminating need for ROVs for lowering HydroWing tidal turbines); heavecompensated deck cranes and a subsea crane.

The Hydrowing system, which has been developed by Inyanga, consists of a permanent, gravity-based structure with retrievable wings fitted with three turbines generating 50-400kW each. Inyanga claims the vessel will be the first dedicated tidal installation and maintenance vessel, providing a total solution capable of installing up to 100mW a year. The conversion work has been put out to tender for a west-country shipyard, and the vessel’s home-port will be Falmouth. It will carry a marine crew of eight with five project crew.

8 Dynamically positioned launch and recovery vessel

Major chop job for ‘MS Rotra Mare’ Commissioned by Amasus Shipping, Holland Shipyards Group is currently working on a lengthening conversion of offshore wind transport vessel MS Rotra Mare in collaboration with Niestern Sander.

Due to the increasing height of wind turbines, transport vessels must be made suitable for the transport of these next generation wind turbines.

Rotra Mare is currently 141.6 by 20.6m, and will be extended to 152.7m. To construct this extension, a new section is being built. The current vessel will be cut in half for this purpose, the bow will float out of the dry dock and the new section will be placed in between. This section will first be adapted to

the aft ship in the dry dock, after which the dock will be lowered for the attachment of the foreship.

While the Rotra Mare is under construction,

Holland Shipyards is also working on the conversion of her sister vessel, the MV Rotra Vente. This conversion includes the installation of new sponsons on both sides of the vessel to increase the deck width to 23.6m. The lifted bow will also be raised to load the next generation of wind turbines.

The Rotra Mare is expected to enter service in January 2022, followed by the Rotra Vente in March 2022.

Both the Rotra Mare and the Rotra Vente are familiar vessels to Holland Shipyards Group, as they were both converted there in 2016.

LIFEBOAT REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT Shipyard group Harland & Wolff has signed a framework agreement with the UK’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution Under the terms of this framework agreement, Harland & Wolff (Appledore) will be responsible for the repairs, maintenance and other works programmes defined by RNLI for its fleet of lifeboats and other vessels. This agreement will span multiple years and each docking will be priced as a bespoke agreement based on the scope of works required to be performed on each vessel.

As part of this agreement, Harland & Wolff will also support the RNLI with free bi-annual haul outs and wash down of its Appledore lifeboat.

Its Belfast yard is one of Europe’s largest heavy engineering facilities, with deep water access, two of Europe’s largest drydocks, ample quayside and vast fabrication halls. As a result of the acquisition of Harland & Wolff (Appledore) in August 2020, the company has been able to capitalise on opportunities at both ends of the ship-repair and shipbuilding markets where there will be significant demand.

In February 2021, the company acquired the assets of two Scottish-based yards along the east and west coasts. Now known as Harland & Wolff (Methil) and Harland & Wolff (Arnish), these facilities will focus on fabrication work within the renewable, energy and defence sectors.

Battery hybrid conversion Ulstein has won a battery hybrid conversion contract for two vessels.

ESVAGT and Ulstein have signed a contract for the conversion of two Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) to ERRV battery hybrid vessels.

Originally built at Ulstein Verft, the two PSVs Hermit Fighter and Hermit Prosper will undergo conversion to Emergency Response Rescue Vessels (ERRV) and battery power at Ulstein Verft. The green transformation to hybrid propulsion will be conducted by Ulstein Power & Control.

“We are looking forward to modifying two competitive PSVs into suitable and fuel-efficient ERRV vessels,” said Ove Dimmen, sales manager at Ulstein Verft.

SPEEDY BEARING REPLACEMENT A drive shaft support bearing failure has been remedied in under three hours thanks to new equipment Bowman International’s Advanced Spherical Split Roller Bearings came to the rescue when a North American based tugboat operator suffered a bearing failure that put a primary boat out of action during the fulfilment of a significant contract.

“Reducing the bearing replacement process from two to three days down to under three hours, the cost savings were estimated between US$3,500 and US$6,500 and the contract was fulfilled without any delay,” said Bowman International.

FASTER MAINTENANCE Each of the tug’s propeller shafts were supported by SN housed solid spherical roller bearings which, like many solid bearings, were time consuming to remove and replace.

Eliminating the need for prop shaft removal, repair or replacement, Bowman’s extended seal lengthens the life of worn shafts, reducing maintenance costs and downtime to put vessels back into service quicker Bowman advised the specification of its ‘interchangeable’ range of advanced products, so that the new bearing could be installed directly into the existing SN pedestal, saving time and money, without compromising performance. The tugboat has Z drives, which eliminated the need to dry dock.

The Bowman Bearing offers multiple performance advantages over the existing SN housed solid spherical roller bearing, including increased radial and axial load carrying capabilities, higher shock load capability and increased permissible shaft misalignment.

After the SN pedestal cap was removed and the solid spherical bearing was cut away, the Bowman bearing was assembled radially around the shaft, into the existing SN pedestal in under three hours.

KEY BENEFITS For replacements in which the pedestal needs replacing too, the Bowman stepped base pedestal design allows the casting to slide beneath the in-situ components, alleviating the need to raise the drive shaft.

The new Bowman Advanced Split Roller Bearings can be supplied with a patented extended triple labyrinth seal, that can quicky and easily be located on a non-worn part of the shaft.

Eliminating the need for prop shaft removal, repair or replacement, Bowman’s extended seal lengthens the life of worn shafts, reducing maintenance costs and downtime to put vessels back into service quicker.

Rapid turnaround for diesel service work Marine engineering and propulsion specialist Royston has completed the rapid turnaround of service work on diesel power plant systems on-board a Global Offshore operated offshore support vessel.

Drawing on its extensive capabilities and resources, an eight-strong team of Royston engineers undertook the 40,000-hour overhaul of two Bergen B32/40L8ACD main diesel generators onboard the 130m length Global Symphony while the vessel was moored in the Port of Blyth in the UK. The job was completed in a tight 10-day time frame with engineers working around the clock in shifts to strip down both diesel engines, completing repairs and replacement

of parts where necessary to the engine bearings, pistons, liners, conrods and cylinder heads. The units were then reassembled and tested for operational performance.

Newcastle upon Tyne, where they were refurbished and rebalanced before being returned to the vessel, with no impact on the overall duration of the job.

ROV survey first The world’s first full remote ‘in-water’ hull survey by ROV has been completed.

Bureau Veritas (BV) and service provider MaDfly – Marine Drone Services – have successfully completed the first full in-water ship’s hull survey with a mini ROV on Brittany Ferries’ ship Bretagne.

Laurent Leblanc, senior vice president technical & operations for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, said: “Underwater remote surveys improve safety and reduce risk, time and costs to produce high-quality results.

This inspection was the first of its kind, with

the test survey performed twice. A remotely operated drone performed an in-water survey with a BV surveyor onboard the vessel. In parallel, Bureau Veritas also tested the capability with its own remote inspection solutions using full HD live video footage from MaDfly. This enabled BV to carry out the survey remotely without any attended surveyor onboard with live streaming, as well as video and audio recording and photo options.

Bureau Veritas said benefits of using this system include safer operations, (as divers do not have to be in the water) and reduction in preparation time.

SHIP REPLACEMENT GREENLIGHTED Trinity House’s ship replacement project has achieved a major milestone.

The maritime charity and General Lighthouse Authority’s project to commission the design and build of a vessel to replace THV Patricia has received UK ministerial approval to go forward to the tender phase and an invitation to tender has now been issued.

Secretary of State for Transport, The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, said: “We are buying a new vessel for Trinity House... this is a great opportunity for UK businesses to demonstrate their competitiveness in the sector.

This will ensure our Trinity House has the modern and green vessel they need to continue to ensure the safety of all mariners.”

ESSENTIAL PROJECT Trinity House first announced the project in September 2019, when the then-Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani MP gave her support to the recommendation that the three General Lighthouse Authorities of The Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) is investing in solar-powered navigation lights.

To ensure power continuity, the SMA has installed Saft Sunica. plus nickel battery systems in critical solar-powered navigation lights at the Trubaduren lighthouse. The lighthouse is the main navigation entrance to the Port of Gothenburg, so battery performance is essential to protect shipping.

Anton Dahl, the SMA’s navigation engineer, said: “We have strict requirements for battery performance, reliability and also sustainability. Saft provides sustainable recycling of nickel batteries when they reach the end of their life through a network of more than 30 bring-back points and its own recycling centre for nickel batteries in Oskarshamn, Sweden.”

Sjöfartsverket decided to modernise Trubaduren’s navigation light systems after a subsea power cable broke. It decided to install power supplies based on solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and batteries for higher

availability and a lower cost than laying a new subsea cable.

Trubaduren lighthouse has two navigation lighting systems, each of which has its own LED lantern, colored filters, control equipment and power supply systems. The batteries are sized to store 760 Amp-hours (Ah) of energy. This is enough for up to 60 days of autonomy.

The batteries operate from -40°C to +55°C.

Modular onshore beacons reduce logistics costs

Logistics in marine works are frequently more expensive than the equipment installed. This is certainly true with marine aids to navigation (AtoN) equipment in locations with difficult access.

In some cases, the financially unpalatable proposition of placing equipment with helicopters is the most cost-effective solution.

At a much smaller scale installing beacons at the end of inaccessible moles or piers poses the same challenge. The equipment may cost a few thousand euros and the logistics tens of thousands per hour.

To address this issue, Spanish navaids specialist company Almarin has developed modular steel towers. Each component is light enough to be transported and assembled by two people however is strong enough to resist the harsh marine environment.

The assembly team can safely carry the different modules over breakwaters without requiring the use of a crane or other means.

Besides facilitating transport and installation, this type of marine aids to navigation can be customised to fit the different requirements of the customer.

Almarin has extensive experience in the manufacture of towers and beacons for port and coastal marking. Almarin engineers develop the most suitable solution: from 40-meter towers with sector lights to 3-meter beacons marking the entrance of a small harbour.

The company provides marine aids to navigation made of stainless or galvanized steel, fiberglass (GRP) or rotomolded materials. These beacons can be equipped with standalone energy systems to cope with most AtoN energy requirements.

OFFSHORE WIND FINANCE MILESTONE A Norwegian finance expert reports a new record in loans and guarantees for offshore wind projects worldwide Export Finance Norway (Eksfin) said it has reached a new milestone of NOK 10.3bn (EUR 1.04bn) in loan guarantees for offshore wind.

This is largely due to a converter platform contract awarded to Norwegian supplier Aibel for the third phase of the Dogger Bank mega-project in the North Sea. Eksfin has now provided guarantees worth over NOK 5bn in total related to Norwegian deliveries to Dogger Bank, which is being developed in joint venture between Equinor, SSE Renewables and ENI. Once completed in 2026 it will be the world’s largest offshore windfarm.

“We’re delighted every time we can play a role in putting financing together for customers of Norwegian exporters, regardless of the size of our contribution. With the Dogger Bank Phase C financing now in place, we can once again celebrate with Aibel,” said Eksfin managing director, Tone Lunde Bakker.

It also provided guarantees covering the first two platforms Aibel secured for Dogger Bank A and B. “Eksfin’s guarantees contribute to solving our customer’s financing needs which is again important to secure our competitiveness in this important and growing market,” said Aibel managing director, Mads Andersen.

Aibel builds and maintains critical infrastructure for the energy industry and in the last few years built a solid position in the European offshore wind sector.

The company had at the end of the third quarter an order backlog totalling NOK 12bn, of which 43% is connected to four separate deliveries within offshore wind in Europe.

IUMI cautious on recovery IUMI – the International Union of Marine Insurance – presented its analysis of the latest marine insurance market trends.

“On the positive side, we are seeing new markets enter the marine insurance space, particularly offshore wind where project sanctioning has overtaken offshore oil and gas for the first time. Although currently a very small piece of the global energy mix – representing just 0.2% offshore wind has the potential to grow rapidly and become a significant marine insurance line.”

8 North Star’s SOVs are high performance sustainable vessels

FUNDING PACKAGE TO BUILD RENEWABLES FLEET North Star Renewables has finalised a funding package of £96 million to build its new renewables vessel fleet The secured loan from multi-national financial services organisation Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI), supplements North Star’s own balance sheet and equity commitments from its 100% shareholder, Basalt Infrastructure Partners, to fund the build of three new Service Operations Vessels (SOVs), which will be delivered to the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm on long term contracts of 10 years firm plus options. The deal represents AllianzGI’s first investment in the SOV sector.

Dogger Bank is currently under construction by jointventure partners Equinor, SSE Renewables, and Eni. The contract with Dogger Bank will create 130 long-term jobs in Scotland and the North East of England during the operations phase of the wind farm.

NET-ZERO GOALS North Star’s SOVs are high performance, sustainable vessels capable of supporting net-zero goals. They provide comfortable, floating-hotel style accommodation to offshore wind turbine technicians and a centralised logistics hub to travel to and from work each day across a “walk-to-work” gangway, or transfer via a smaller daughter craft vessel. The SOV is also configured to handle cargo and act as a warehouse.
